Labor Day weekend in Door County: Check out boats, sausages and beer, a state park and art
Festivals and special events spotlighting a variety of interests take place saturday and sunday in sister bay, egg harbor, ellison bay and gills rock.
DOOR COUNTY - The summer season may be coming to an end with the approaching Labor Day weekend, and Door County is offering several two-day festivals and special events that weekend to cater to a variety of interests.
Now, that doesn't mean the Peninsula is getting ready to shut down until next summer, as September and October bring a series of community festivals to go with the continuing theater seasons, live music, recreational activities, the pick-your-own apple season and more. And then there's the holiday season …
But while it's still the summer of 2024, there's still opportunities in Door County to get out and check out cool boats, sausages and beer, nature and art this Labor Day weekend. Here's a quick look at these unique fests and events.
Marina Fest, Sister Bay
To be sure, boats are the star attraction at Marina Fest , but there's much more going on than that.
There also are arts and crafts, pedal tractors, a children's carnival, fireworks and more when Sister Bay Marina hosts its 29th annual festival Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Oh, proceeds benefit local nonprofit organizations, too.
This festival was created to pay tribute to the marina, which was rebuilt in 1993. The village had such a strong response to the event the first year that it was made into an annual event with food, fun, music and other activities that are so well known to similar to other Door County community festivals.
The Saturday of Marina Fest is the day highlighted by the traditional vintage boat show, with the vessels on display from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Also for boating buffs, the Door County Maritime Museum will have the result of its annual wooden boat building class on display, a 16-foot Shearwater rowboat that volunteer instructors and their students spent more than 1,500 hours building. The museum raffles off the new boat and its trailer each year and will sell tickets at the festival both Saturday and Sunday ($20 each, three for $50, only 1,500 tickets available), with the winning number drawn during Sister Bay Fall Fest in October.
Children can build their own toy boats from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., compete in a pedal tractor pull for ages 4 to 12 from noon to 1:30 p.m. or 4:30 to 6 p.m. (registration opens at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively) and play carnival games or in a bounce house from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
For fans of arts and books, an arts and crafts fair, along with a workshop for children and adults who want to try their hands at a stained glass mosaic, runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Door County Library's Sister Bay-Liberty Grove branch holds its annual used book sale at Village Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fireworks over the bay of Green Bay cap Saturday's activities at around dusk, and guests can watch them not only from shore but also from the decks of one of two fireworks cruises, aboard the double-decker boat Norra Dorr (call Door County Boats at 920-421-4444 or visit doorcountyboats.com for reservations) and the popular tall ship Edith M. Becker, a 23-passenger, 65-foot schooner (call Sail Door County at 920-495-7245 or visit saildoorcounty.com ).
The festival also offers food, beverages and live music. The food part starts with the annual pancake breakfast held by the Sister Bay-Liberty Grove Fire Department from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and the food court in the pavilion at Marina Park is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The music also is in the pavilion, with Saturday's lineup featuring '70s-'90s cover rock band Mistrial from 1 to 4 p.m., local country-rock favorites Modern Day Drifters from 4 to 7 p.m. and the R&B of Big Mouth and the Power Tool Horns from 7 to 10 p.m.
Sunday at Marina Fest brings back the arts and crafts fair/farmers market from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and used book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as the children's carnival games and bounce house from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the food court from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Live music takes a classic rock turn throughout the day with Conscious Pilot from noon to 3 p.m. and Glas Hamr from 4 to 7 p.m.

Sausagefest, Egg Harbor
What says Labor Day weekend in Wisconsin more than sausages and beer?
Those two staples of the Badger State are joined by a Saturday and Sunday full of live music when hundreds of people come to family-friendly craft brewery One Barrel Brewing Co. for its sixth annual end-of-summer, sausage-stuffed celebration.
Pizza Bros at One Barrel, the brewery's in-house pizza maker, expands its menu for the festival to not only serve its unique wood-fired pizzas but also hot dogs, brats, kielbasa and perhaps other sausages, with people able to choose their own toppings. The sausages will be served until 9 p.m. or until they run out, which has happened in past festivals. And of course, One Barrel will have its menu of craft brews on tap, from summer beverages like lagers, IPAs, sour ales and hard ciders to porters.
For live music, the Saturday lineup has Americana band Gin Mill Hollow playing from noon to 3 p.m., polka with Milwaukee's Mike Schneider Band from 3 to 6 p.m. and Milwaukee pop-rockers Love Monkeys from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday's sounds feature Fox Valley-based rock-jam band Jeremiah Jams from noon to 3 p.m., WAMI Award-winning pop-rockers Doozey from 3 to 6 p.m. and party rockers Wet Possum closing the festivities from 6 to 10 p.m.

Newport Wilderness Days, Newport State Park
Members of the Newport Wilderness Society, the park’s official friends group, started this annual weekend of hikes and programs in 1992 as a way to showcase the remote park near the tip of the Door Peninsula, highlighted this year by a weekend-closing celebration and potluck of the park's 60th anniversary.
Activities take place the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend.
The first day, Saturday, Aug. 31, opens with "Coffee on the Beach" from local coffee and granola shop Kick Ash Coffee at 8:30 a.m. at the picnic area by Lot 3 (shelter building in case of rain).
From there, participants can head out on a "Newport Past and Present Tour: Hotz trail" to learn about Ferdinand Hotz and how he preserved his land that is now part of the park. The hike is on the Hotz Trail, which as early as the 1920s served as the driveway to Hotz' cabin. Hikers should meet at 10 a.m. at the parking area at the end of Europe Bay Road.
At 1 p.m., master naturalist and master gardener Helen Berch-Kenny gives a program on "Our Pollinators: How to Protect and Plant for Them." Participants can learn bee facts, make an insect house and learn about plants that attract pollinators to your garden in this hands-on discussion. Those interested should meet in the Nature Center at Lot 1.
Closing the day, physicians Paula Kocken and Janine Buffo, the “Tick Talk Docs,” talk about ticks and tick-borne illnesses at 2:30 p.m. Kocken and Buffo will lead and informative and fun discussion about ticks, how to prevent their bites and the illnesses they may carry, such as Lyme disease, while still enjoying the outdoors. Those interested should meet in the Nature Center at Lot 1.
The Sunday of Wilderness Days opens with Dave LaLuzerne, an herb shop owner and herbal pharmacist, leading an Herb Hike to explore herbs and plants in the local environment and talk about how they can help people's health and well-being, Hikers can meet at the Nature Center at Lot 1.
Master naturalists Maureen and Tom Flatley show how the history of a forest reveals itself if you know where to look for clues and how to decipher them in "Forest Forensics." This program starts at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Nature Center at Lot 1.
Then at 3 p.m. is a program about Peter Knudsen, the founder of Newport, a small farming and timber community in the 1880s that was where Newport State Park now is. Peter Oleson, great-grandson of Knudsen, gives this presentation about Knudsen and the family in the Nature Center at Lot 1.
Wrapping up Wilderness Days is the 60th anniversary celebration and potluck, starting at 4 p.m. Sunday. All are welcome to join the festivities, bring something to pass for dinner and join the celebration of the park. Those who worked or volunteered at Newport, served on its board, were members of the Newport Wilderness Society are especially welcome, but anyone who enjoys the park is invited. The celebration also includes park trivia with park swag for prizes at 6 p.m. The event takes place in the shelter building at Lot 3.

Gills Rock ArtFest
This popular art festival and artist demonstration returns for a 22nd year at the tip of the Peninsula.
About 10 to 15 artists who work in many different media – painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry and mixed media – will display their latest work from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of Top o' the Thumb Gift Shop. Some artists give demonstrations of how they create their work during the event.
Gills Rock ArtFest runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, outside Top o' the Thumb, 12728 State 42. No admission is charged to attend. For more information, visit the Top o' the Thumb Facebook page at facebook.com/Topothethumb .
