1. Wander the jaw-dropping gardens

You can’t miss Gaylord Opryland’s lush gardens — literally. Tropical vegetation covers more than nine indoor acres. The resort’s cascading waterfalls, the tallest of which is 44-feet high, make you feel as if you’re on a faraway island. Lose yourself in wonder as you discover giant palms, stunning orchids, and even banana trees. You won’t find those growing natively in Tennessee, but thanks to the atrium’s glass ceiling and horticulturists’ meticulous control of the building’s humidity, these plants thrive as if they were in the jungle.

2. Hop aboard the Delta Riverboat ...

Sailing all the world’s rivers would take years, but you can conquer many in a single ride aboard the Delta Riverboat. The resort’s quarter-mile-long indoor Delta River contains the water of more than 1,700 rivers from around the globe. Hop aboard a fun-filled cruise and learn about the interesting origins of the hotel, one of the largest in the world. Be on the lookout for resort’s finned guests. Catfish, carp, and koi can all be found in the Delta River.

3. ... or take a cruise on the General Jackson Showboat

If you want an even grander adventure on the water, look no further than to the  General Jackson Showboat , which is docked just a short distance away from the resort. This stately steamboat harks to its 19th-century predecessors that sailed along the Cumberland River, putting Nashville on the map as a trading center.

On the popular midday Taste of Tennessee cruise, get a sampling of the many styles of music that made this state famous — from bluegrass to country to rhythm and blues — all while enjoying a three-course meal and views of iconic Nashville landmarks along the way.

4. Splash around at SoundWaves

In true Nashville fashion, music and water blend harmoniously at  SoundWaves,  the city’s only resort water experience. If you’re a thrill-seeker, jump in a mega raft and enjoy the ride on Rapid Remix, a waterslide that pumps out the jams as you take on vortex loops. Looking for a mellower experience? The Down Tempo Lazy River has got you covered with relaxing music that you can float along to. When you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Decibels where you can enjoy live music every weekend through September on the restaurant’s patio.

5. Come see us at the Grand Ole Opry

When you stay at the resort, you’re also staying next door to where country music lives. The Grand Ole Opry is “the show that made country music famous,” featuring your favorite legends, today’s superstars, and tomorrow’s hit-makers. Eight to 12 artists take the stage at each show, and luckily for resort guests, Nashville’s best entertainment is just a short complimentary shuttle ride or leisurely stroll away.

But don’t wait until showtime to experience the Opry magic. The brand-new immersive theater experience, now part of the  daytime tour,  is a moving tribute to the country music artists who’ve walked across  Opry’s iconic 6-foot circle of wood,  which sits centerstage. “I’ve always said that the circle still contains the dust from Hank Williams’ cowboy boots,” Opry member Brad Paisley has said. Now your boots can walk across it, too.

6. See WSM broadcast live at its fish-bowl studio

Have you ever wondered to yourself if your favorite radio personalities look the way they sound? You won’t have to anymore when you swing by the WSM fishbowl-style studio just off the Magnolia lobby. The radio station that gave birth to the Grand Ole Opry in 1925, 650 AM WSM, still broadcasts live from Nashville inside the Gaylord Opryland.

You’ll get an intimate peek of the radio show’s operations. Start your day with some early-morning banter courtesy of  country radio sentinel Bill Cody  and Charlie Mattos’ on  Coffee, Country, and Cody  — you never know when one of your favorite artists might be in studio — and close out your evening with some classic country tunes that Eddie Stubbs is spinning on  The Eddie Stubbs Show.

7. Pose next to your idols at Madame Tussauds

Madame Tussauds  has a number of locations around the world, but its Nashville wax attraction located inside Opry Mills Mall is the only one that’s completely themed around music, featuring more than 50 wax figures, 30 of which are unique to Music City. In the Opry Finale exhibit, you’ll get to make your debut alongside Opry members Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Keith Urban and more. Don’t forget to take a selfie!

10 Things That Belong On Everyone’s Tennessee Summer Bucket List

When it comes to things to do in the summer in Tennessee , there is so much fun to have you will need a lifetime of summers to experience it all! If you are running low on ideas, time to get out your pen and paper because we have a few more things to add to your summer bucket list this year.

1. Lounge around by the lake.

alt

Ah, lazy days by the lake are the things that summer is made of. We have plenty of great lakes here in Tennessee so we don’t need the beach to get a tropical experience. No, we Tennesseeans prefer to have the clean and warm freshwater of a lake preferably with mountains in the background. So find your favorite body of water from Watauga to Reelfoot and get ready for a day of fun in the sun.

2. Glow Kayaking.

alt

We all love getting out into the water and allowing the current to gently propel us forward as we glide along glass-like mirrored water, but this one has quite a twist. As the sun is setting launch out into the water and as the hues of fiery colors fade in the sky to the blanket of stars above your transparent craft will start to glow. Then you can enjoy the rest of your paddling paradise amidst the light illumination of the glow kayak. The best place to do this is with the outfit called Get Up And Go Kayaking .

3. Take a sunset cruise on a kayak to see hundreds of bats (!) fly out of a cave.

alt

I know I just mentioned taking a vessel out over the water, but this one is just too good to not mention. In this once-in-a-lifetime type voyage, you will go out with a guided team on the Nickajack Lake during the sunset . Watch the brilliant colors of the sunset amidst the train cars and rugged cliffside shoreline. Then as the last light starts to fade the historic Nickajack cave which is home to hundreds of bats, starts to come alive with activity. Watch as these furry creatures squeak and fly around to feed for the night. There is nothing quite like it and if you want a discounted rate check out our friends at Viator for this kayaking bat cave adventure .

4. Waterparks!

alt

When the heat of the summer gets to be just too much to bear then a waterpark is just the thing to fix that. Take the family to any one of our amazing waterparks to splash, slide, and have some serious fun in the water. Big experiences like Nashville Shores , or Dollywood’s Splash Country are great options as well as Soaky Mountain with many unique options you won't anywhere else, like the kaleidoscope lazy river .

5. Swimming holes.

alt

A favorite Tennessee pastime is to find a body of water and just jump in! When you think about fun places to swim, it makes perfect sense: why float around in a boring pool when you can feel the rush of the cool mountain water with a beautiful waterfall in the background? Cummins Falls State Park is always a crowd pleaser but other places like Greeter Falls in salvage Gulf State Park or Cane Creek Cascades in Fall Creek Falls State Park are great options too. I have learned that just about anywhere in Tennessee there is a good local swimming hole not too far away, so find your favorite or try a new one this summer.

6. Go underground.

alt

Stepping away from water activities, I wanted to showcase another great way to cool off this summer. Did you know we have more caves in Tennessee than any other state? That leaves us with plenty of options when it comes to spelunking. No matter the weather, most caves hover around cool 50 degrees year-round, making them the perfect summer destination. They all have unique stories, history, and formations to look at so if you are looking to see the largest underground waterfall in our country, head to Ruby Falls . How about the largest underground lake? The Lost Sea Adventure has you covered. You can even spend the night underground if you want with Cumberland Caverns . The possibilities are seemingly endless.

7. Get educated at a new museum.

alt

There are many great museums all around the state, from hands-on children's experiences like the Discovery Park of America in Union City to niche small-town museums dedicated to things like model trains . Depending on your passions you are sure to find a good place dedicated to preserving and showcasing items and information that is bound to wow and amaze you. This is also a great option on a budget because you can find plenty of free museums in Tennessee too.

8. Dig into the history of Tennessee.

alt

Similarly to discovering new museums is digging into the story of what made Tennessee what it is today. There are so many great ways to do that from visiting historical towns like Jonesborough to taking a trip through Cades Cove to explore all of the old buildings and churches. I find taking a step back in time to the early days of the over-mountain men and the Lost State of Franklin to be extremely interesting. So why not dedicate some time to take a trip back in time to appreciate where we are now?

9. Take a trip to the big city.

alt

Many of our big cities are the perfect size. Even in places like Nashville, which is our biggest city, you can be out into the countryside in minutes. But with all the fun the cities have to offer you should book a trip and stay right in the heart and close to all the action. You can spend a weekend exploring unique spots in Memphis , take an outdoor-centered getaway to Knoxville , or soak up the sights with a trip to Nashville . Choose a city and enjoy all there is to do and they all have alot to offer.

10. A good, old-fashioned road trip.

alt

I saved the best for last because nothing beats a good old-fashioned road trip. As the rubber meets the road, roll down the windows, and blast your favorite tunes, I dare say there isn’t a better summertime feeling than that. I like to pick a little bit from each category above and see how much we can squeeze into a short amount of time. If you are in need of a good road trip then make sure to browse our list of some of the best road trips in Tennessee , at least that will get you started in the right direction.

You shouldn’t have a hard time finding things to do in the summer in Tennessee, the only problem is fitting it all into a few short months. It is ok if we don’t hit it all in one summer though, with a state this good we plan on being here for a long long time. If you are looking to spend some time camping this summer you should know there are plenty of great campgrounds in Tennessee too. If you need a camper to make your trip more enjoyable then make sure to visit our friends over at RV Share to rent one for an epic outdoor getaway.

The First Construction Theme Park Just Opened In Tennessee And It’s The Perfect Summer Adventure

Dig’n Zone in Sevierville, Tennessee , is a dream come true for the little kid in your life who loves big construction equipment. It can even be a dream come true for adults who have always wanted to feel the raw power of those rugged rigs. From this childhood fantasy, a brand-new theme park idea arose and is now open where guests will get the chance to safely try all these massive machines.

Once you get your tickets in hand, you and your excited family can head into the theme park. You won’t want to miss our on the opportunity to take a family portrait in front of the world’s largest tire, which greets you upon entering the park. After a quick pic, you have a whole world of possibilities to explore in this construction wonderland.

alt

Almost all of the rides and attractions allow guests to get a full, hands-on experience with some of the best construction equipment around. No doubt the Dig’n Pit will want to be one of your first stops. Step into the seat of this 4,500-pound excavator where you can scoop holes and fill in the spots with dirt.

alt

Test your skills with various games using these hulking tools. Later Gator is a game where you challenge your friends to see how many alligator heads you can pull out of the pool in the allotted time. Other games include stinging together monkeys like the old school game Monkies In A Barrel, (A childhood favorite. At least for me it was), and swinging a wrecking ball to knock down buildings in a game called Tumble Down.

alt

Speaking of wrecking things, you can buy a toy bus in the gift shop and run it over with a pavement roller! There is nothing more fun than a little bit of wanton destruction, just this time it's supervised and encouraged. There are plenty of tools you can hop in the driver seat and take off racing around the track. There are a variety of rides that are suited for the littlest of construction workers to the big burley fathers who want to show their kids what it's like to be in a construction crew.

alt

One of the best rides at Dig’n Zone is The Decimator. This behemoth has been specially outfitted to accommodate riders in buckled-up bucket seats, similar to what you would find on a roller coaster. Once this bad boy starts to spin you’ll be glad for the seat belt.

alt

You don’t have to be an excited child to enjoy your day at Dig’n Zone, but this is a great spot in the Smoky Mountain region for families to gather and play. This has been a highly anticipated attraction and now that it's open the only thing that's left to do is get your tickets for a day of construction fun.

alt

Dig’n Zone in Sevierville is certainly a unique attraction and fits right at home with all of the bigger-than-life places found all along the Parkway in Pigeon Forge . For tickets and more information about the park, please visit the Dig’n Zone website.

For more family fun in Sevierville, I would highly recommend a trip with Scenic Helicopter Tour . This was one of those once-in-a-lifetime kind of experiences for us and I think you’ll love it too.
