Ways to Get on the Water in Buffalo, NY

By Drew Brown

Published on June 22, 2017 | Last Updated May 14, 2024

When the sun is shining and the temperatures are high, there’s no place you’ll rather be than feeling the gentle breeze along Buffalo’s revitalized waterfront. Following an ambitious makeover, the result of hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment, some of Buffalo’s best attractions and events are situated on the shores of Lake Erie, the Buffalo River and beyond. In addition to all of the fun you’ll have on land, here are more than a dozen ways to get on the water:

catamaran in buffalo

There are now several different spots to rent kayaks – one of the best ways to see Buffalo from the water. At Canalside, BFLO Harbor Kayak returns for another season while further up the Buffalo River, Elevator Alley Kayak  and  Buffalo RiverWorks operate in the shadow of one of the largest collection of grain elevators and silos in the world. Outer Harbor Buffalo offers rentals launching from the beach at Wilkeson Pointe , while Paths Peaks & Paddles launches in Ellicott Creek and Blue Water Marina rents from the shoreline of Grand Island.

Water Bikes & Paddleboats

Another novel way to cruise the city’s waterways is on water bikes, which are available for rent at Canalside from the Water Bikes of Buffalo (the same folks behind the famous Ice Bikes). Up in Tonawanda, at the beautiful Gateway Harbor, water bikes are also available for rental from Water Bike & Boat Adventures . For the youngsters, pedal along on a paddleboat in Canalside’s historically aligned canals.

catamaran in buffalo

Stand Up Paddleboard

Test your balance as you coast down the Buffalo River with a stand up paddleboard session from BFLO Harbor Kayak and Buffalo RiverWorks. Venture out into more open waters and feel the breeze roll in from Lake Erie with paddleboard rentals available from Longboards Paddle Co.  at Hamburg Town Beach, Wilkeson Pointe and Ohio Street. And if you’re looking for a guided session, Kevin, Christian and the team from SUP Erie Adventures offer stand up paddleboard (and kayak) excursions of the dramatic cliffs along Lake Erie’s beaches.

Miss Buffalo

An old favorite – the Miss Buffalo – offers private outings from its anchoring spot near the Erie Basin Marina. When you’re aboard you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Buffalo skyline and the famous sunsets over the waters of Lake Erie .

BuffaloRiverHistory

Buffalo River History Tour

Buffalo’s efforts to preserve and restore its grain silos have received international praise. This summer, see them first-hand on a Buffalo River History Tour , offering 90-minute river tours and 2-hour river/land hybrid tours that offer a partial walking tour of Silo City and into the Perot Family Malting Plant grain elevator.

Harbor Queen Cocktail Cruises

Unlike the traditional tours offered by Buffalo River History Tours, these Cocktail Cruises allow you to relax with a refreshing cocktail while cruising the Buffalo River and Lake Erie. Enjoy live local music and soak up the atmosphere aboard this two-hour cruise. While these cruises do not include a narrated tour, a knowledgable guide is onboard to answer any questions you may have.

catamaran in buffalo

Spirit of Buffalo

The Spirit of Buffalo schooner offers tours that set sail into Lake Erie during the breezy daytime or during a dazzling Buffalo sunset.

Grand Lady Cruises

With a home docked at Buffalo RiverWorks, Grand Lady Cruises is Buffalo’s only dedicated dinner cruise vessel. Make a reservation, enjoy a meal prepared right onboard and then head up to the veranda for drinks, live music and one of the best sunsets around.

catamaran in buffalo

Buffalo CycleBoats & Buffalo Pedal Tours

Buffalo has never seen anything like the Buffalo CycleBoats  and Buffalo Pedal Tours before. This waterfront attraction, having launched with Buffalo CycleBoats a few summers ago, this floating pub/group bicycle allows its 15-passengers to pedal along as they take in all the sites on the waterfront with a cold beer (BYOB).

Moondance Cat

Celebrating nearly 40 years of service, the Moondance Catamaran can fit your private group and equipped with tons of lounging space (pro tip: relax on the netting as the waters zip by below you), a fully stocked bar and, of course, wonderful vantage points of Buffalo and the expanse of Lake Erie.

catamaran in buffalo

Buffalo Tiki Tours

You’ve probably seen this thing out on the waterways and thought, “what the heck is that?” Take a relaxing tour down the Buffalo River Hawaiian-style on a floating tiki hut with you and five of your friends! The Buffalo Tiki Tour is available for sunset cruises, bachelorette and bachelor cruises, weddings (yes they have a minister) and group outings.

Climb aboard sailor! Whether you’re looking to enjoy the wind in your hair or plan the perfect date night, make sure to book your outing through Make Sail Time . And if you’re looking to learn the ropes yourself, Seven Seas Sailing School will make you a seasoned sea dog in no time.

catamaran in buffalo

The waters surrounding Buffalo, in terms of fishing, are some of the richest you’ll find. Loaded with smallmouth bass, steelhead, trout and carp, chartering a fishing tour through companies like Brookdog Fishing Co. offer excitement for everyone from the seasoned angler to hobby fishers.

WHERE WE GO

Cruise through our five-star reviews.

catamaran in buffalo

Miss Buffalo is a boat ride for the entire family. We enjoyed the cruise especially the narrator. We learned a lot of the history of Buffalo and saw some amazing sights! We would recommend this cruise for anyone that would love to see the gorgeous Buffalo Harbor!

We had a very large group for a high school reunion, many were from out of town. Everyone really thought this was a great idea to get everyone outside in the nature to see our beautiful city from the water view and how it has evolved. We learned a lot from the tour guide.

Lovely cruise on Black Rock River and Buffalo Harbor. Ample seating and nearly full. Enjoyed several beverages and was very happy they didn't rip me off on the prices of drinks and snacks. Traveled w/ my wife and 2 grand kids. Very nice!

We had several friends with us and everyone had a good time. The tour director and staff were friendly and informative. We would definitely recommend this cruise to anyone as there is ample seating, tables if you wish, beverages (well drinks also) and shade if you prefer.

I've been on the tour a few times over the years and it never gets old. The views were wonderful and the tour guide combined interesting information about the city's history, local nature/species, new shoreline development and more in his talk.

The trip was simply terrific. The narrator, Marla, was clearly a proud "Buffalonian". Her facts mixed with humor was wonderful. The boat as clean and the staff very friendly. The bartender was a friendly young man that was very focused on quick service. Truly loved our relaxing trip on your fine vessel. Just the right length of time for an afternoon cruise.

Buffalo Rising

The Moondance Cat

After living in Buffalo pretty much my whole life, I finally hitched a ride on the Moondance Cat yesterday. I joined my wife for her annual Martin Cooks staff party, which hosted around 30 people for a two-hour voyage. The outing started at the Erie Basin Marina (next to The Hatch). We set out from the “marina” at 1:30pm, and sailed to the Outer Harbor (inside the breakwall), before circling back to navigate the City Ship Canal (a short tributary that forks from the Buffalo River).

The two hour trek was spectacular, with blowing winds and sunny skies. During the sail, I asked the captain a few questions about the 56′ long and 31′ wide Moondance, which is now enjoying 35 years in operation. He told me that the catamaran holds 65 passengers, which, on an off night (non weekend) would cost each passenger, at full capacity, around ten+ bucks for a two-hour cruise (our cruise was around $775). That meant that, in the future, if I was to rally thirty friends to book the boat for a couple of hours, it would only cost each person approximately twenty+ bucks, which is a real bargain when considering the fantastic lake-bound outing.

Stay Informed with Buffalo Rising

There is a full bar on The Moondance, and a bartender is on duty from start to finish (drinks are additional). And for the most part there is no interaction with the skipper and the first mate, who are situated at the back of the boat, meaning that the outing feels more like bareboating than a captained charter.

In the past, I always looked at The Moondance as something for the corporate crowd, who wanted to treat employees to a day on the lake. Or maybe something for wedding parties, or celebrations. But after enjoying yesterday’s cruise, I’m thinking that the cat is easily more accessible than I ever imagined, as long as there are 30 friends at hand who also appreciate a day on the water.

The two-hulled design enhances stability and allows the catamaran to be better balanced in the water and when sailing. It also allows for more deck space than traditional yacht rentals .

As catamarans can venture into shallower waters, they have become very popular in Mexico and the Caribbean and are commonly used for Playa del Carmen sailing and snorkeling or scuba diving tours.

What to Bring on a Playa del Carmen Catamaran Tour

Here are some of the Mexico travel essentials I would recommend bringing on a catamaran tour:

  • Swimsuit: You will more than likely be getting in the water so you’ll want to wear a swimsuit and coverup.
  • Sunglasses : Don’t forget sunglasses to wear on the catamaran–it will likely be very bright and sunny!
  • Beach towel: Bring a beach towel to dry off after you get out of the water. These microfiber beach towels are great options because they are super light weight and dry quickly between the multiple stops.
  • Biodegradable sunscreen: Any time you are going to be swimming in the ocean, it is so important to bring biodegradable sunscreen to protect and preserve the coral reefs. You can pick up my favorite brand on Amazon here .
  • Snorkel set: If you’re concerned about comfort or cleanliness, I would recommend bringing your own snorkel set instead of using the one provided on the tour. I’ve been on snorkeling tours where my snorkel mask didn’t fit well and it totally ruined the experience so now I always bring my own.
  • GoPro or waterproof camera: I would highly recommend bringing a GoPro or waterproof camera to capture your snorkeling and catamaran experience. I always bring my GoPro and am constantly amazed by the picture quality.
  • Change of clothes: You’ll also want to bring a change of clothes so you can change out of your wet swimsuit before the ride back to your hotel or resort.

Tips for Playa del Carmen Catamarans

Follow these tips to make the most of your Playa del Carmen catamaran experience:

  • Book in advance: I would highly recommend booking online in advance to reserve your spot as Playa del Carmen boat tours can fill up quickly. Most tour companies like Viator offer flexible booking options and allow you to cancel without penalty up to 24 hours before the booking date.
  • Go private if you can: If you have a larger group or are willing to pay more for an exclusive experience, then definitely consider booking a private catamaran tour. The experience will be much more personalized and you won’t have to worry about obnoxious tour-goers ruining your experience.
  • Bring your own snorkel set: If you plan to snorkel, I would recommend bringing your own snorkel set to ensure the best comfort and cleanliness.
  • Wear biodegradable sunscreen: As I mentioned, don’t forget to bring biodegradable sunscreen . It’s absolutely essential if you need sun protection.
  • Take lots of pictures: A catamaran is truly a bucket list experience you won’t want to forget! If you don’t have a GoPro or waterproof camera, bring a waterproof phone pouch to protect your phone and still take lots of pictures around the water.

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited on most snorkeling tours, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.
