What To Wear On A Yacht featured image by the supermelon

Attending a yacht party calls for a blend of sophisticated style and relaxed elegance, capturing the essence of the nautical setting while ensuring your comfort and confidence.

Whether envisioning a glamorous sunset cocktail party, a leisurely sunbathing session, or a serene exploration of hidden coves, curating the perfect yacht ensemble becomes an art.

This guide navigates the realm of yacht fashion, offering insights and inspiration to ensure you’re impeccably dressed for every moment of your nautical experience.

From chic essentials that capture the essence of oceanic elegance to tips on selecting attire that harmonizes with both sea and sky, the following are the style essentials to elevate your yacht experience to unparalleled heights.

yacht chic dress code

Yacht settings generally adhere to a semi-formal dress code, implying that items like shorts, flip-flops, or t-shirts are best avoided. Instead, consider selecting slacks or khakis for men; sundresses, jumpsuits, or skirts are excellent choices for women.

When in doubt about your attire, it’s preferable to lean towards a more polished appearance rather than a casual one.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

When dressing for a yacht outing, opt for a nautical-inspired ensemble. Consider wearing a crisp white shirt paired with tailored shorts, boat shoes or espadrilles, and a sun hat.

This classic look combines comfort and style, suitable for both genders, while capturing the essence of a yacht setting.

Before finalizing your outfit for the boat party, there are a couple of factors to consider, with the first being the prevailing weather conditions. If the temperature is soaring, opting for lightweight and breathable fabrics is paramount.

Donning stylish swimsuits is integral to yacht party attire, accompanied by chic cover-ups and delicate, breezy dresses or shorts. By skillfully coordinating these elements, you can effortlessly master the art of yacht-worthy fashion.

However, in the event of cooler temperatures, ensuring you’re well-insulated is imperative. Being caught unprepared amidst the vast ocean during fall or winter could prove quite uncomfortable.

Moreover, regardless of the schedule, having a sweatshirt or a light denim jacket at the ready is prudent, particularly when the night descends.

The maritime environment can turn quite chilly after sunset, especially during the colder months.

Furthermore, your outfit choice should be tailored to the specific activities planned aboard the yacht. If your plan revolves around leisurely moments on the boat’s deck, a combination of shorts and a T-shirt layered over a stylish bikini is likely suitable.

However, should water sports be part of the agenda, selecting attire that remains relatively dry and light prevents any undue discomfort caused by excess moisture.

Lastly, take into consideration the overarching ambiance of the yacht setting. For a laid-back gathering, opting for a more relaxed outfit is acceptable.

However, if the occasion leans towards a more refined tone, it’s essential to align your attire accordingly.

Midi or maxi dresses and stylish rompers and jumpsuits are excellent choices that seamlessly blend sophistication with style.

Essential attire for women at a yachting event includes cover-ups, tunics, kaftans, and dresses with a fluid, breezy quality. These pieces harmonize seamlessly with swimwear, offering both a stylish layer and a means of keeping cool and comfortable.

Resort GlamOff-the-shoulder romper, wedges
Sophisticated CharmWhite wide-leg pants, silk blouse

Opting for a maxi or lace cover-up exudes an elevated charm, while selecting a sundress cover-up or a romper lends a more relaxed aura. For everyday yacht wear, consider the practicality of linen dresses and side tie skirts, both of which effortlessly complement the maritime experience.

yacht chic dress code

No looks exudes the maritime quite like a cover-up, and these lightweight garments serve as a stylish and functional layering option when transitioning between water-based activities and lounging on the beach or on a yacht. Cover-ups are typically made from materials like chiffon, cotton, linen, or lightweight knits, which make them breathable and comfortable in warm weather. Moreover, cover-ups offer protection from the sun’s rays while maintaining an air of sophistication. The following are common cover-ups for women:

With their loose and flowing silhouettes, tunics further amplify a great seaside look. They often feature intricate designs, embroidery, or patterns and can be made from lightweight materials like cotton, linen, or sheer fabrics.

Tunics provide coverage for the upper body while allowing air to circulate, keeping you cool. Their effortless charm pairs well with the nautical backdrop, allowing women to exude both comfort and elegance.

yacht chic dress code

Kaftans are loose-fitting, maxi-length dresses with wide sleeves, often made from flowing fabrics like chiffon, silk, or lightweight cotton. Kaftans can be quite elegant and are popular for their bohemian vibe. They offer women full coverage and the ultimate in  comfort during warm weather.

Slay it with a sarong!

Typically made from lightweight, quick-drying materials like rayon or silk, sarongs are versatile pieces of fabric that can be wrapped around the waist like a skirt, tied as a halter dress, or used as a shawl. Sarongs are easy to pack and provide coverage while allowing flexibility in styling.

yacht chic dress code

Inspired by traditional Japanese clothing, kimonos are open-front, flowing garments that often feature vibrant prints and patterns and are made from lightweight materials.

Kimonos are distinctive, add a touch of elegance, and can be worn over swimsuits or paired with shorts and tops.

Oversized Shirts

For a more casual approach, an oversized button-up shirt can be worn as a cover-up. It’s a versatile option that can be worn open or buttoned up, offering coverage and protection from the sun.

Play up the look with vibrant colors or intricate patterns for an engaging yacht style.

Is a cocktail dress a suitable choice for women?

For occasions leaning towards the more refined end of the spectrum, a sophisticated yacht party might very well warrant the selection of a cocktail dress, or in rarer instances, an elegant gown. The cocktail dress code, being slightly less formal than full evening wear, aligns well with such gatherings’ relaxed yet stylish atmosphere.

Ideally, the event’s formality level will be communicated beforehand, but exceptions do exist.

When the ambiance is less formal than a boat wedding, alternative options like wide-legged pants, rompers, or wrap skirts can be considered. Attire resembling what you would choose for a beach or poolside gathering would also be fitting.

An essential consideration when attending any yacht event is the choice of footwear. It’s advisable to steer clear of heels – opting for flat shoes is a safer and wiser choice to ensure a comfortable and accident-free experience.

Amongst men, the favored ensemble for yacht journeys in motion often comprises a breezy, lightweight linen shirt, offering both comfort and composure throughout the excursion. Naturally, a pair of swim shorts is indispensable, ensuring you’re perpetually prepared for impromptu dips.

Completing the ensemble, opt for casual boat shoes that complement your yacht attire seamlessly.

Stylish sunglasses are essential to the maritime look as a vital accessory, effectively shielding your eyes from the sun’s glare.

Linen button-downs stand as the preferred choice for men while onboard due to their lightweight and breathable nature.

They have long been associated with boating, ensuring a harmonious fit within a yacht environment. Light cotton options also offer similar advantages, with items like polo shirts seamlessly blending into a crowd.

Even a well-chosen t-shirt can find its place, though appropriateness should be tailored to the context. However, a slightly elevated appearance may be preferable for slightly more formal outings or celebratory gatherings.

A great pair of tailored pants are a definite option for a day or night out on a yacht. Linen pants , chinos, or loose slacks are all versatile enough for any event.

Yet, a reliable pair of shorts proves invaluable if the yacht’s purpose involves active endeavors like fishing or sailing.

These offer comfort and freedom and ensure readiness for any unforeseen water-related situations.

In the realm of yacht wear, swim shorts emerge as a particularly pertinent item, given the likelihood of aquatic escapades. Whether you find yourself plunging into the Mediterranean or relaxing a jacuzzi, shorts are a pragmatic must-have.

Be it for leisure or the potential of an emergency scenario requiring a swift swim, swim shorts serve both purposes seamlessly.

Ensuring both security and comfort, boat shoes are an indispensable inclusion for any yacht experience as they prevent unwanted slipping on the deck. Sometimes referred to as deck shoes, they closely resemble loafers but include laces for added practicality.

For more relaxed outings, some opt for flip flops, which can be suitable for casual days spent with friends.

Accessories

Wearing sunglasses aboard a yacht transcends mere fashion, assuming the role of a vital shield against the sun’s unyielding glare and potentially harmful UV rays. As you sail on a maritime journey, these shades emerge as a reliable companion, diligently safeguarding your eyes from discomfort and potential long-term harm.

Whether you’re leisurely absorbing the sun’s warmth or actively engaging in water-based thrills, sunglasses exude an undeniable air of refined elegance, effortlessly elevating your yacht ensemble.

What Is Suitable to Wear to a Yacht Party?

Crafting the perfect attire for a yacht party involves a skillful equilibrium among comfort, style, and functionality, seamlessly embracing the maritime setting.

Embracing an effortlessly chic and laid-back approach, the careful curation of your outfit can significantly enrich your voyage across the waves.

Deciding on fabrics that prioritize breathability and lightness, such as linen or cotton, ensures your ease amidst the sea breeze. In the backdrop of daytime gatherings, a palette of soft and pastel hues, including serene blues and delicate pastels, imparts an invigorating and lively ambiance.

Opting for a versatile piece like a fashionable sundress, coupled with boat shoes that perfectly balance comfort and trendiness, encapsulates the essence of casual sophistication.

As twilight descends and the festivities extend into the evening, embracing darker shades introduces an element of refinement, harmonizing with the fading sunlight.

The thoughtful inclusion of tasteful accessories, like a wide-brimmed hat for enhanced sun protection and stylish sunglasses that shield your eyes and accentuate your maritime charisma, further elevate your ensemble.

Ultimately, the crux lies in aligning your attire with the occasion’s level of formality, while never compromising on comfort, and embodying an aesthetic that mirrors the serene allure of open waters.

Final Considerations

Embracing a fusion of refinement and casual ease emerges as a simple and effective strategy when considering yacht attire. While certain occasions might warrant a subtle refinement, the extent of this shift hinges upon the unique event and the preferences of the hosts.

Give precedence to fabrics like linen and other lightweight options to optimize comfort. An indispensable element to include is a pair of boat shoes, guaranteeing stability on the deck. Additionally, ensure you don’t neglect key essentials such as swimsuits and vital sun protection gear, which notably includes sunglasses.

In addition to this, they have great moisture-wicking properties, which means that any sweat or water on your clothes quickly evaporates, keeping you cool and dry.

While you can opt for any colors you want, light colors are especially popular in the heat of the sun, as well as nautical colors like light blue and navy, which echo the color scheme of open waters around you.

Other Essentials To Bring To A Boat Party

1. your swimsuit.

Firstly, it’s not a boat party without swimming! Don’t forget to bring your favorite bathing suit with you.

2. Suncream

It also pays to protect your skin from the sun, so pack your sunblock in your bag. A good sunblock should be at least SPF 30, since SPF 30 can block about 97% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. Make sure to reapply your suncream every 2 hours you spend in the sun for optimal protection.

3. Protective Accessories

It goes without saying, but don’t attend a boat party without a good pair of sunglasses . The sun is especially strong in the open sea as it reflects off of water, and you don’t want to spend your day squinting.

In addition to sunglasses, also consider bringing a stylish hat that protects your face and scalp. Whether you opt for a wide-brimmed hat, a floppy sun hat, a straw hat or a sporty cap, it serves as a barrier against the sun, reducing the risk of sunburn and discomfort.

4. Beach Towel

Some yachts and bigger boats will be equipped with beach towels for guests, but this is not a given. If you think you’ll be going in for a dip, pack a beach towel in your beach tote before you set off.

Now that we’ve gone over some of the best things to wear for yacht and boat parties, let’s also take a look at clothing to avoid.

What Not To Wear To A Boat Party

How you dress for a boat party is very different to what you wear on land. What looks good in a rooftop bar might not be appropriate for a yacht, so keep these things in mind when putting together your outfit:

1. High heels

Stilettos with a sharp heel are a bit of a hazard on a moving boat; not only are you less stable when wearing them, the heel itself can also get stuck in gaps or grates on the deck, which can damage your shoes.

To be on the safe side, opt for comfortable flat sandals, boat shoes, or espadrilles, or take your shoes off entirely!

If you’re attending a dressy occasion in the evening, consider wearing platform wedges that look polished but are easy to walk in.

2. Fabrics That Make You Sweat

Avoid fibers and materials like acrylic, polyester, denim, and spandex that will make you sweat, and silk, which has moisture-wicking properties, but will not hide sweat stains.

Instead, opt for breathable fibers like cotton, linen, rayon, viscose, jersey, chambray and tencel, especially if you’re attending a boat party during the daytime.

3. Skin Tight clothing (If you’re swimming)

If you know that you’ll be swimming, avoid wearing tight clothing, as there’s nothing more uncomfortable than having to put your tight clothes back on when you have wet skin. Also, what looks good dry might not look as great when it’s all soaked in water and sticking to your skin.

Opt for clothes that are loose enough that they won’t cling to you and that allow the wind’s breeze to flow through them. Alternatively, you can always bring a change of clothes if you have a tight outfit that you definitely want to wear on your boat ride.

What to Wear on a Yacht in 2023: A Smart Fashion Guide

What to Wear on a Yacht

Introduction:

Planning a yacht trip? Before you embark on your nautical adventure, you’re likely to ask yourself: what to wear on a yacht? Whether you’re attending a glamorous yacht party, cruising the open waters, or basking in the sun on the deck, dressing appropriately and stylishly is key. In this comprehensive fashion guide, we’ll navigate through the latest trends and timeless classics to help you find the perfect yacht-worthy attire. So, let’s dive in and discover what to wear on a yacht!

Opt for Nautical-Inspired Outfits:

To blend seamlessly with the maritime ambiance, consider incorporating nautical-inspired elements into your attire. Classic navy and white stripes, anchor motifs, and crisp blue hues evoke a sense of timeless elegance. Choose a Breton striped top paired with white shorts or a navy blue dress for a chic, effortless look.

Embrace Light and Breezy Fabrics:

Yacht trips often involve warm weather and plenty of sun, so it’s crucial to choose fabrics that keep you cool and comfortable. Opt for lightweight and breathable materials like linen, cotton, and silk. These fabrics allow air to circulate, ensuring you stay fresh and stylish even in the heat.

Don Stylish Swimwear:

When packing for your yacht adventure, be sure to include stylish swimwear. Opt for high-quality swimsuits that flatter your figure and make you feel confident. Classic one-pieces or trendy bikinis in vibrant colors or chic patterns are always a good choice. Don’t forget to pack a stylish cover-up or kaftan for when you’re not in the water.

Don’t Forget Sun Protection:

When it comes to what to wear on a yacht, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is essential, especially when spending long hours on a yacht. Incorporate accessories like wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses with UV protection, and lightweight scarves to shield your face and neck. Additionally, don’t forget to apply sunscreen with a high SPF to exposed areas of your skin.

Choose Comfortable Footwear:

Opt for footwear that balances comfort and style. Deck shoes, boat shoes, or espadrilles are excellent choices for their non-slip soles and maritime aesthetics. If you prefer sandals, opt for ones with good arch support and secure straps. Avoid high heels as they can be impractical and unsafe on a moving yacht.

Layer Up with Versatile Pieces:

Yacht trips often entail varying weather conditions, so it’s wise to bring versatile clothing items that can be layered. Lightweight cardigans, wraps, or linen shirts can be easily thrown over your outfit if the weather gets cooler or for protection against evening breezes.

Dress Smartly for Evening Affairs:

If you’re attending a yacht party or planning a special evening event on board , embrace a more sophisticated attire. Opt for elegant cocktail dresses, tailored linen suits, or stylish jumpsuits. Remember to choose breathable fabrics to ensure your comfort throughout the night.

Conclusion:

When it comes to what to wear on a yacht, striking a balance between style, comfort, and practicality is key. Nautical-inspired outfits, light and breathable fabrics, stylish swimwear, and sun protection essentials should be at the top of your packing list. What to Wear to a Yacht Party – Dress Code Decoded

Yacht party etiquette.

Yacht parties blend luxury with the serene beauty of the sea, creating a unique setting for social gatherings. Understanding etiquette and dress code is key to enjoying these exclusive events to the fullest. When it comes to “what to wear to a yacht party,” the stakes are high, as your attire not only reflects your style but also your respect for the host and the occasion.

Navigating the nuances of yacht party fashion can be a breeze with a few guiding principles in mind. From selecting the right fabrics that marry comfort with elegance to choosing outfits that resonate with the time of day and a specific theme of the event, every detail counts. This guide aims to demystify the expectations surrounding yacht party attire, ensuring you make a splash for all the right reasons. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned attendee, understanding the dos and don’ts of yacht party fashion will enhance your experience and ensure you contribute positively to the luxurious ambiance. So, let’s set the course for a deep dive into the world of yacht party etiquette, with a special focus on decoding what to wear to ensure you look your best while enjoying the high seas in style.

Understanding the Yacht Party Dress Code

Yacht party dress codes can vary from casual chic to formal elegance, depending on the occasion. It’s important to inquire about the dress code in advance to ensure your outfit is perfectly suited for the event. This proactive approach not only shows respect for your host’s preferences but also ensures you feel comfortable and confident among the other guests.

Yacht Party Dress Code

Yacht parties often reflect the personality and style of the host, meaning that each event can have its unique twist on attire expectations. For daytime events, you might find a more laid-back, nautical-inspired dress code, favoring light fabrics and vibrant colors that complement the sea’s natural beauty. Evening gatherings, however, may call for a touch of sophistication with cocktail dresses, tailored suits, or even thematic attire that aligns with the party’s motif.

When decoding the dress code, consider the location and time of year. A yacht party in a tropical locale might lean towards breezy summer dresses and linen shirts, while cooler climates could call for layered outfits that still adhere to a chic, nautical aesthetic. Accessories also play a crucial role in your ensemble; select pieces that enhance your outfit without overshadowing the event’s vibe .

Ultimately, understanding and adhering to the yacht party dress code is about finding the perfect balance between personal style and the event’s theme. It’s an opportunity to showcase your fashion sense while respecting the setting and occasion. By doing so, you contribute to the event’s overall elegance and ensure that the party remains an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone on board.

For Women: Dressing for a Yacht Party

When dressing for a yacht party, women have a myriad of stylish options that blend comfort with elegance. Here are some extended tips to ensure you look your best on the high seas:

Opt for Light Fabrics

Choosing the right fabric is crucial for staying comfortable throughout the event. Beyond cotton and linen, consider silk or chiffon for a touch of luxury that’s still breathable. These fabrics are not only ideal for maintaining comfort in the sun but also move beautifully in the sea breeze, adding a dynamic element to your outfit.

Elegant Evening Wear

Evening yacht parties often call for a step up in formality. A sophisticated cocktail dress or a chic maxi dress remains a perfect choice, with the addition of a lightweight shawl or pashmina to ward off the chill after sunset. Consider the silhouette and neckline of your dress to ensure it’s in harmony with the yacht’s setting—something that offers elegance without sacrificing comfort.

Stay Colorful

The backdrop of the sea and sky provides a perfect canvas for vibrant colors and patterns. Don’t shy away from bold prints or nautical stripes that echo the setting. Pastel shades work beautifully during the day, while jewel tones can add a rich depth to evening attire. Remember, the goal is to complement the beauty of your surroundings without overshadowing it.

Accessorize Wisely

Accessories can elevate your yacht party outfit from simple to stunning. Opt for statement pieces like a bold necklace or chic earrings to add a focal point to your look. However, it’s crucial to balance statement pieces with the overall simplicity of your outfit to maintain an air of understated elegance.

Yacht Party night

Footwear Considerations

When it comes to footwear, comfort and practicality are key. For daytime events, stylish flat sandals or espadrilles can be perfect. They offer ease of movement on deck without sacrificing style. For evening affairs, a pair of wedged heels can add elegance while still being practical for the yacht’s surfaces. Always choose non-marking soles to avoid scuffing the deck.

Final Touches

Remember, a yacht party is as much about enjoying the setting as it is about socializing. Choose outfits that allow you to move freely and enjoy the amenities offered. Whether lounging on deck, participating in activities, or dancing under the stars , your outfit should enhance your experience, not hinder it.

By keeping these extended tips in mind, women can confidently navigate the dress code for any yacht party, ensuring they look fabulous and feel comfortable from sunup to sundown.

For Men: What to Wear to a Yacht Party

Dressing for a yacht party offers men the chance to showcase their style while adhering to comfort and appropriateness for the maritime setting. Here are some extended guidelines to ensure you’re well-prepared for any yacht party.

Casual Daytime Looks

For daytime events, the key is to combine comfort with style. Alongside polo shirts, consider lightweight, breathable linen shirts that keep you cool under the sun. These can be paired with well-fitted chinos or Bermuda shorts, depending on the level of formality of the event. Choose light colors or pastels to reflect the daylight and contribute to the overall festive atmosphere.

Evening Sophistication

As the sun sets and the event turns more formal, the attire should shift accordingly. A well-tailored blazer, paired with a crisp shirt underneath, can elevate your look instantly. Opt for trousers in navy, beige, or white to maintain the nautical theme. A lightweight cashmere sweater can also be a stylish addition if the evening gets cooler, offering both warmth and sophistication.

Embrace Nautical Themes

Nautical themes offer a playful yet stylish way to dress for a yacht party. This doesn’t mean going overboard with anchor prints or sailor hats but subtly incorporating maritime elements into your outfit. Think navy blue, white, and stripes. A well-chosen accessory, such as a belt or a scarf with a nautical print, can add a touch of personality to your look without detracting from the sophistication.

Footwear Choices

Footwear is an essential aspect of your yacht party attire, blending style with function. For daytime, consider boat shoes or loafers in light colors that match well with both shorts and chinos. For the evening, you can opt for more formal shoes, like brogues or loafers in darker shades. Remember, the shoes should have non-marking soles to protect the yacht deck.

Accessories to Complement Your Look

Accessories play a vital role in completing your yacht party outfit. A stylish pair of sunglasses is a must-have for daytime events to protect your eyes and add a cool factor to your look. A classic watch can also enhance your outfit, offering functionality and elegance. Choose accessories that are understated yet refined to maintain a balance between casual and formal.

Practical Considerations

While style is important, practicality should not be overlooked. Opt for fabrics that offer breathability and comfort, as you’ll be spending time in the sun and by the sea. Additionally, it’s wise to bring a lightweight jacket or blazer for the evening, as temperatures can drop. Always consider the activities planned for the event and dress accordingly, ensuring your outfit allows for a range of motion and enjoyment of the festivities.

By following these extended guidelines, men can confidently dress for any yacht party, ensuring they strike the perfect balance between style, comfort, and appropriateness for this unique setting.

Accessorizing Your Yacht Party Outfit

When planning what to wear to a yacht party, the role of accessories should not be underestimated. They are the finishing touches that can elevate your outfit, ensuring you look polished and put-together. Here’s how to choose accessories that enhance your yacht party attire without compromising on comfort or practicality.

Yachting

Sunglasses and Hats

The right pair of sunglasses is not just a practical necessity for a day spent on the water; it’s also a style statement. Look for high-quality lenses that offer UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful rays. Frame styles can vary from classic aviators to modern wayfarers, depending on your taste and the vibe of the party.

Hats offer additional protection and can be a stylish accessory for both men and women. Women might opt for wide-brimmed hats that provide ample sun protection while adding an element of glamour. Men can consider a fedora or a Panama hat for a touch of sophistication. Remember, the goal is to complement your outfit and the occasion, so choose hats that are stylish yet functional.

Minimal Jewelry

When it comes to selecting jewelry for a yacht party, the mantra ‘less is more’ certainly applies. For women, simple, elegant pieces like a delicate necklace, a pair of stud earrings, or a thin bracelet can add a touch of sophistication without being too flashy. Men might consider a classic watch or a simple bracelet as a subtle addition to their outfit. The key is to choose jewelry that enhances your look without overpowering it or getting in the way of activities.

Practical Tips for Accessorizing

Match Your Metals : Ensure that your jewelry metals match for a cohesive look. Mixing metals can be done tastefully, but for a yacht party, simplicity often reigns supreme.

Consider the Event’s Theme : If the yacht party has a specific theme, consider accessorizing accordingly. Nautical-themed accessories can be a fun touch for events that embrace the maritime setting.

Quality Over Quantity : Choose a few high-quality pieces over a multitude of cheaper options. This not only elevates your look but also ensures your accessories withstand the elements.

Functionality is Key : Remember that you’ll be on a moving vessel, so choose accessories that won’t easily get lost or damaged. Securely fitted items are preferable to loose, dangling pieces that could catch or fall off.

By thoughtfully selecting accessories that align with the overarching theme of what to wear to a yacht party, you can ensure that your outfit is both stylish and suitable for the unique environment of a yacht. Remember, the right accessories can significantly impact your overall look, providing an extra layer of polish and sophistication to your yacht party attire.

Footwear: Choosing the Right Shoes for a Yacht

Selecting the appropriate footwear is a crucial aspect of preparing for a yacht party. The right shoes not only complement your outfit but also ensure safety and comfort as you navigate the deck. Here’s how to choose wisely:

Non-marking Soles

The primary rule for yacht footwear is to choose shoes with non-marking soles. Yachts often have delicate decking that can be easily scuffed or damaged by hard, dark soles. Look for shoes specifically designed with light-colored, soft soles that leave no traces behind. This consideration shows respect for the vessel and its owner, adhering to yacht etiquette.

Comfort is Key

While style is important, comfort takes precedence when you’re at sea. You’ll likely be standing, walking, or dancing for extended periods, so selecting shoes that offer support and comfort is essential. For women, this might mean choosing wedges or flats instead of high heels, which can be unstable on a moving boat. Men might opt for loafers or boat shoes that provide both comfort and a nautical aesthetic.

Style That Suits the Occasion

Your footwear should match the style and formality of your yacht party attire. For a more casual day event, stylish sandals, boat shoes, or espadrilles are perfectly acceptable and blend well with the maritime environment. For evening events that call for a more formal dress code, choose elegant yet practical footwear that complements your outfit without sacrificing comfort.

Slip Resistance : Besides non-marking soles, look for shoes that offer good grip and slip resistance. Boat decks can become slippery, especially if wet, so shoes with strong treads can help prevent falls and injuries.

Material Matters : Consider the material of your shoes. Leather and canvas are popular choices for yacht footwear because they’re durable and can handle the marine environment. Synthetic materials that allow for breathability and quick drying are also beneficial, especially if they get wet.

Easy to Remove : Shoes that can be easily slipped on and off are practical for yacht settings, where you might be asked to remove them before entering certain areas of the boat to prevent damage to the interior floors.

By following these guidelines for choosing the right shoes for a yacht, you’ll ensure that your footwear is appropriate, comfortable, and stylish. Remember, the best yacht party shoes strike a balance between elegance and practicality, allowing you to enjoy the festivities confidently and comfortably.

Style guide - what to wear on a yacht.

Published 11 July 2023

Ditch the excess baggage on your next superyacht holiday with this simple how-to guide to pack an elegant and practical capsule wardrobe for your superyacht stay

Whether you are cruising off for a romantic weekend on board a luxury charter yacht, stepping aboard for a family celebration, or spending the weekend basking in the Mediterranean sunshine with friends, a superyacht charter is a heady mix of glamour and barefoot luxury. So, when it comes to looking the part, what should you pack to ensure you looking effortlessly cool?

A superyacht charter demands a certain dress code that is both comfortable and stylish at the same time. This might sound simple, but ccreating a capsule wardrobe for every scenario and occasion is no mean feat when it comes to the glamorous world of yachting. However, although there are certain designer names that are synonymous with the superyacht set, it doesn’t mean it’s all designer suits and gowns – quite the opposite in fact. Here is the Burgess guide to everything you need to pack - and the luggage to pack it all in...

Clothing Essentials

Effortless style allows a seamless transition from day to night

The majority of superyacht cruising grounds are in warmer climates, so lightweight clothing is a necessity for both daytime and evening. The perfect daytime outfit will be suitable for just about any occasion – the whole attraction of yachting is the freedom to go anywhere you like and do anything you like at any given time. One minute you might be heading ashore for a coffee in the harbour, only to find that the cobblestone streets are lined with boutiques just waiting to be explored, or that fellow guests would like to take in a dose of culture ashore, followed by an impromptu swim in a secluded cove on the return tender journey. Being ready for every eventuality is the key to keeping your cool.

Great for those impromptu swims in secluded coves

When it comes to a superyacht, swimwear is an outfit in its own right and one of the most important items to pack. For ladies looking for true, dolce vita style, a one-piece swimming costume not only looks stylish but will allow you to mess around worry-free on the watertoys, both above and beneath the surface. Meanwhile, those looking to simply bask in the Mediterranean or Caribbean sunshine and relax on deck might prefer to opt for a strapless bikini to avoid tan lines visible under the evenings attire. A selection of classically styled cover ups to wear for al fresco dining or a beachside lunch are a must, and for visits ashore a light dress, such as Heidi Klein’s Sunset maxi dress, is perfect.

Orlebar Brown linen shirt and striped shorts

For men, being in the sunshine is the perfect excuse to inject some colour into your outfit, perhaps with a nautically themed pair of swim shorts, such as Frescobol Carioca’s tailored swim shorts. For al fresco dining on board, or visits ashore, simply add a stylish linen shirt and loafers, and you will be ready for any occasion.

Evening options

Perfect for those crisp summer nights

From canapes and cocktails or dinner aboard to dining in the Michelin-starred restaurants and family run tavernas, every evening brings a different social activity when cruising aboard a superyacht. What to wear in the evening obviously depends on the climate of your destination, but rest assured on board a superyacht there is always an excuse to wear something glamorous. While cruising the Mediterranean, ladies might choose to wear a statement dress and elegant accessories, while the Caribbean calls for a more casual approach. Pack plenty of light and comfortable fabrics but remember to take a few warmer items too, in case the evening segues into a nightcap on the breezy aft deck, or perhaps a late-night return by tender – while out at anchor you will of course be open to the elements.

Take the superyachting lifestyle to the next level with a black tie themed dinner party

For men, evening usually calls for a smart-casual look. Pare down your summer tailoring with a stylish linen shirt, perhaps in a cotton-blend to add subtle texture. Lightweight trousers, rather than shorts, are also a must when heading ashore for dinner.

Layering options

Wrap up with layers and enjoy a relaxing movie night under the stars

Although the majority of cruising is in warmer climates, the sea breeze can pick up and add a chill, especially at night once the sun has set. From cover ups for the daytime, to light jumpers and wraps for the evening, clever layering, come rain or shine, is a skill. Pack several options to take you seamlessly from dawn until dusk, al fresco to inside. Whether returning from an evening ashore or getting cosy during an al fresco movie night on board, the key is to stay warm and stylish with layers. Opt for a statement scarf draped as a blanket or sumptuously wrapped around your shoulders, providing the perfect accompaniment to any outfit, while men can take a favourite sweater.

Don’t forget the accessories

You might think that you don’t need to consider shoes as barefoot chic is the only way on board, but a couple of pairs of sandals and high heels for the ladies, and loafers for the men are always an essential for excursions ashore. Although you won’t be wearing them on board, a pair of slip-on boat shoes for stepping ashore are usually perfect for men. A pair of trainers are also essential, for the on board gym or adventures ashore, and, given the glamorous surrounds of the Mediterranean cruising grounds, a pair of leather, smart shoes could also be needed when heading ashore for the evening.

Jimmy Choo Dellena 100 logo-appliquéd leather-trimmed woven raffia espadrille wedge sandals

Sandals for ladies are an essential for excursions to the beach or an afternoon browse around boutiques, while come the evening, a pair of heels or wedge sandals are the perfect addition to any glamorous outfit.

Artesano Pinta grosgrain-trimmed straw hat

A superyacht wardrobe isn’t complete without a classic Panama hat. A Panama is a favourite item to take on board, but all types of hats warrant a spot in any superyacht suitcase. Not only do they provide protection from harsh UV rays, but they also keep you cool should you find yourself without shade during the hottest part of the day. A number of different options should ideally be taken, so that you can select the style to suit the weather and activity. On still days glam it up poolside with a wide brimmed straw hat, and when the wind picks up don a stylish cap, which can also be used to provide shade for that morning beach run.

Wherever you are exploring, be it in cooler climes or chartering in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, it goes without saying that a great pair of sunglasses is a superyacht wardrobe essential. Not only do they complete the superyacht look, they also provide essential protection from both UVA and UVB rays. On that note, check the UV protection – just because you might have a designer pair of glasses, a high price tag doesn’t always mean they have polarised, UV protection lenses. Take at least a couple of pairs, or even perhaps one for each deck, so that you are never caught without, and remember, a pair of chic sunglasses are the perfect finishing touch for every look. Whether you prefer cat-eye sunglasses or oversized, round-frames, square-frames or classic aviator styles, use them to liven things up a little, or add a dash of youth and vibrancy to your outfit.

Time on board means a break away from timekeeping, but although telling the time on board is incidental rather than functional, watches still have their place on the packing list. Watches are the most popular and prestigious jewellery available for men, and always add timeless glamour to ladies' attire. Fortunately, yachting has become the most prominent port of call for watchmakers and as such there is a wealth of nautical collections for both men and women. From serious submersibles to refined pieces to wear on deck, seaworthy or yacht-worthy, a watch makes a fine addition to any outfit.

Ulysse Nardin Diver X Nemo Point Limited Edition

Whether celebrating with cocktails on board or accessorising swimwear, earrings, bracelets and necklaces add sparkle and glamour to any outfit. From fine jewellery for evenings to layering for a luxe-vibe poolside, add some summer sparkle and enhance your outfit, day or night. Choose brightly coloured stones to bring light and warmth to the skin, or mix or clash colours, turning up your brights with vivid hues. Match the shade of your jewels to your swimsuit for a timeless and sophisticated look, and layer jewellery alongside summer dresses. Combine gold jewellery with corals and shells, as well as semi-precious stones for that cool, summer look. Top tip – sun lotion will cling to your jewellery and can dull even the brightest of diamonds, so take them off while applying sun cream, and let it soak in before replacing. Gold and diamonds worn by the pool or on the beach won’t be damaged by the elements, whereas semi-precious stones can sometimes be porous, so better to leave them to be worn in the evening.

Bags of style

Arriving in style is an important factor for many charterers and guests, and so your luggage needs to be as stylish as your outfit. Those heading off on a sailing yacht cruise should opt for soft luggage for easy stowing, while the larger motor yachts will always have space for your Goyard or Louis Vuitton case to be stowed away. Whether you opt for a deluxe luggage brand or a classically styled holdall (think Daniel Craig as James Bond), you can make a powerful statement with the stylish luggage.

What To Wear on a Yacht: 8 Chic Ideas

Whether you are invited to an intimate get-together on a friend's yacht or plan on chartering a boat in the Bahamas for a week, the most important thing about being on the open seas is having the right outfit to meet your moment.

It can be overwhelming to try to figure out what to wear on a yacht, especially with changing weather conditions and shifting trends. This concise guide offers 8 chic ideas to help you look and feel your best whether you’re on land or sea.

The Perfect Outfit for Every Occasion

A yacht is always an adventure. However, the dress code for an event on the water can be challenging. Whether you’re preparing for a brunch or evening soiree aboard, you’ll need to consider what outfit the event is asking for.

Whether you’re looking for moderate coverage, or are more excited to sun in your bikini on the upper deck, selecting an outfit for the yacht is important. You want to feel as good as you look, so making sure that you take into consideration how much skin you’re comfortable showing, the weather conditions, and the event you’re attending is a must.

1. Prioritize Comfort

How you feel in your clothing is just as important – if not more so – than wearing the hottest trends of the season. Whether you’re selecting a swimsuit, a beachy cover-up, or a matching patterned set, prioritize clothing that makes you feel as good as you look. If you’re comfortable, you’ll feel more confident to show up to any situation as your authentic self.

3. Try a Romper for the Best of Both Worlds

A romper is an effortless and stylish way to look your best and prioritize comfort. Rompers come in many styles, with everything from form-fitting to flowy to flatter your figure. The best thing about a romper is its versatility; it can be dressed up with heels and earrings, or stay casual and cute with sandals and a canvas tote. Whatever the occasion on board, you can’t go wrong with a romper.

4. Balance Comfort and Style With a One-Piece

A one-piece bathing suit can be the perfect outfit on its own, especially if you’re planning to yacht somewhere warmer or where swimming is the priority. Perhaps the yacht has a pool on deck, and you’d prefer to lounge while getting a tan.

Nothing beats a classic silhouette , so pairing a one-piece suit with some casual sandals, a tote with your essentials, and some delicate earrings are all you need to make a statement. Especially if you’re more comfortable wearing a bathing suit as your yacht attire, a one-piece successfully provides coverage in all the right places, while accentuating your figure naturally.

5. Highlight All the Right Places With a Kimono

There’s nothing better than an outfit that highlights all the right places, defines your natural curves, and provides extra coverage where you want it. A kimono, particularly a colorful or  vibrantly patterned piece, allows flexibility in outfit choices, while still also making a statement.

Take the Eclectic Shore Kimono from La Blanca , a perfectly colorful cover-up with tassels and an open front. A kimono can be worn over a swimsuit, effortlessly adding to a breezy aesthetic, or even paired with pants and a light top if you don’t want to commit to the heaviness of a sweater.

6. Show a Little More With a Bikini

If you’re feeling like showing a bit more skin, or the priority on the yacht is to soak in the sun, a bikini might be the perfect outfit for the yacht. Especially if you’re spending time on the water in a more casual setting, or snorkeling and watersports are the main attraction, why not look as stylish as possible?

With so many bikini styles to choose from, the most important thing to consider is which will you feel most comfortable in. Whether you choose a tankini, one-shoulder, or strapless bathing suit, a two-piece will be sure to turn heads. And don’t forget the SPF ! It’s important to pair your style with health, so prioritize hydration, adequate sun coverage, and sunscreen.

5. Keep It Classic With a Sundress

There’s a reason why a classic is a classic. You can’t go wrong with a sundress on the water, and, like the myriad options of bathing suits, there seem to be endless styles of dresses to choose from. It can be overwhelming to select a sundress, so keep it simple and classic, or commit to making a statement.

Especially if you’ll be on the water during the middle of the day, a sundress might be the move. Too much sun can be draining, and you can’t get much better than relaxing in a shady spot on a yacht. Additionally, a sundress can be easily transitioned into a nighttime outfit by swapping sandals for heels, pairing it with some elegant jewelry, and including a wrap or sweater.

6. Linen Pants Are a Breeze

One of the great things about linen is that it’s a flexible, breathable material. Whether you’re relaxing by the poolside bar or on a Mediterranean adventure, pairing pants with a cute top is a sophisticated, stylish way to bring comfort into an outfit. Prioritize pants made of breathable material, and are appropriate for the weather and type of yacht excursion you might be embarking on.

The great thing about pants is that they can effortlessly be paired with a one-piece bathing suit for a complete outfit, coupled with a wrap, kimono, or sweater for when it gets chillier in the evening. If you opt for an outfit without a bathing suit, pants can be combined with a number of tops to create the perfect outfit.

7. Try a Longer Skirt, Make a Statement

If you’re not partial to pants, embracing a longer skirt could be the perfect move for an inspired outfit. Selecting a skirt length is key, as you don’t want it to be too long or short for comfort. A three-quarter-length skirt, especially when part of a matching set or paired with a bathing suit top, creates a seamless and high-impact look.

Longer skirts are flattering in all the right places and can be dressed up or kept casual depending on whether you pair them with heels, flats, or a wide-brimmed sun hat. With a two-part set, a longer skirt can provide a sweet silhouette to a bathing suit top, and elevate its function, which is to provide coverage. Consider matching a patterned skirt with a neutral top, or complementing colors between top and bottom.

8. Shorts and T-shirt: A Timeless Combination

You really can’t go wrong with shorts and a shirt when embarking on a yacht. We saved this go-to outfit for last because its simplicity is timeless; shorts offer flexibility in that they can be paired with a variety of stylish options. Consider pairing shorts with a simple t-shirt, patterned tankini, or off-the-shoulder top; three very different styles, all simple and effective ways to embrace style and comfort during a day at sea.

If you’re keener on water sports , snorkeling, or generally are interested in a more active aesthetic, consider board shorts. These shorts from La Blanca are not only functiona l (they are quick-drying and equipped with pockets for storage), but are a stylish complement to your bathing suit. Stylish shorts can merge function and fashion, providing you with the best of both worlds.

The Bottom Line

Planning out an outfit for your day on a yacht can feel overwhelming since there are so many options to choose from. Do you choose a skirt or shorts? Do you opt for pants instead of a kimono, or combine both for a blended look? With these eight chic ideas, you can’t go wrong. Consider what your priorities are and plan from there; is comfort as important as style? Are you eager to get into the water and start snorkeling, or would you rather relax and suntan?

Curating an outfit for a yacht can seem daunting, but really just involves some intentional curation. If you plan to tan or swim, select a bathing suit that’s classic and versatile and can be combined with a number of outfit options. If you prefer to hang out above deck, a beautiful matching set of pants can offer a fashion-forward option for relaxation.

Whether you’re going for festive, fun, stylish, or comfortable, planning your outfit for a yacht doesn’t have to compromise style for comfort. Grab your SPF and sunglasses, and create an outfit that not only looks great but makes you feel even better.

What to Wear on a Yacht

Ian Fortey

When you’re on a yacht you’re obviously going to dress for the weather but, in general, you want to keep it light and cool. Casual is good within reason as long as you don’t go overboard, so to speak, and it need not be formal but it shouldn’t look inappropriate or out of place. There’s no set in stone dress code for yachts

The most expensive yachts in the world cost hundreds of millions of dollars and, for most of us, that’s a bit out of reach. But that doesn’t mean we’ll never get on a yacht for a weekend charter or even a yacht party and when that happens knowing what to wear is something you may be curious about. Let’s dig into some deeper details of suitable yacht attire for men and women so you don’t have to worry about feeling self conscious when you’re living it up on a fancy yacht.

Yacht Styles Suitable for Men

yacht chic dress code

In 80s movies you may have seen some yacht captains decked out in full formal jackets with hats and pipes and everything. You can still do that and, no word of a lie, a guy at my uncle’s yacht club used to wear the navy jacket and a captain’s hat everywhere he went for years. But most people like to keep it casual on a yacht and far less formal with a simple, casual outfit.

Linen is a popular choice for yachting because it’s very light and breezy and keeps you cool under the blazing sun. A linen shirt, like linen button downs, have a real casual but not inappropriate quality to them that has been linked to boating for years and would ensure you never look out of place.

Light cotton works just as well, of course, and something like a polo shirt wouldn’t make you stand out in a crowd, or a simple button down. Even a t-shirt wouldn’t look out of place but you’ll want to tailor that to the situation. If you’re literally just day sailing then that’s great. But if it’s a slightly more formal outing or maybe a party then you may want to keep it a little more upscale

Here’s another case where you should take the situation into account. Shorts and trunks can definitely be appropriate on a yacht but if you’re having a party in the evening then maybe consider longer pants. However, if you’re actually traveling on the yacht, especially if you’re fishing or sailing/racing, a good pair of swim shorts will do you well. Not just for the freedom and for keeping you cool but in the event of an emergency and you do end up in the water, it’s never a bad idea to be ready to swim.

Vans Boat Shoes-Zapato Del Barca

Boat shoes are a must for any boat ride. You don’t want to be skidding around on the deck in inappropriate footwear but at the same time you want to be comfortable. These are often called deck shoes as well, and they are very close to loafers with the addition of laces.

You’ll definitely see people in loafers on yachts but loafers don’t have siped soles, which means they aren’t textured to provide the proper grip on deck. If the yacht is going to be actually out there sailing and moving on the water, you want deck shoes.

Some people wear flip flops and that may be fine for a casual day with friends.

Accessories

yacht chic dress code

You should be wearing sunglasses on a boat whether or not its a yacht just because you want to keep your eyes protected from dangerous UV rays and the glare off of the water. Polarized shades are the best but anything is better than nothing. A nice pair of aviators won’t look out of place, or some Ray Bans can be great as well.

Yacht Styles for Women

yacht chic dress code

Traditionally the difference between men’s fashion and women’s fashion on a yacht has been one of practicality. In the past, men were the ones always controlling the yacht and women were passengers. Boating has a somewhat shady history of not being friendly to women, you’ll recall. And for that reason women were mostly seen wearing swimsuits and lounging on yachts. But if you’re a woman running the boat, you’ll likely want the same freedom and comfort that a man in a simple shirt and shorts is enjoying.

Now if you’re not piloting the boat and instead are just around to enjoy a yacht party, then swimsuits tend to be the order of the day and potentially some kind of wrap or cover up as well. Basically whatever feels most comfortable and appropriate to the occasion.

Things like kaftans, sundresses, and various wraps and coverups that would work poolside or at the beach when you’re not in the water are just as welcome on a yacht and won’t look out of place at all.  A knee length summer dress is something you’d likely see on any yacht.

Speedo Women’s Port Lightweight Breathable Water Shoe

Like men, you can get a good pair of women’s boat shoes that look a little more elegant if that’s what interests you, and they’re a good investment. Again, a boat shoe is less about appearance than function when the boat is actually in motion and you want something that gives you firm footing, which a boat shoe can do.

Both hats and sunglasses are more than appropriate for women on a yacht and offer the added protection from the sun that you’re going to want anyway. You won’t look out of place and you’ll be doing your eyes and skin a favor by keeping them away from harmful UV rays. Remember the sunscreen as well.

What to Wear to a Yacht Party

yacht chic dress code

Now a yacht party is a different sort of monster than just being on a yacht. This will likely be a more formal occasion and that means dressing up a little. Ditching the shorts for this is probably a good idea.

Unless you have been specifically told this is a formal wear event, black tie affair don’t dress for one. Most yacht parties aren’t that formal because, well, they’re on boats. Leaning into the boat aspect is a better option. A suit would be as formal as you should expect unless told something ultra formal like a tuxedo is expected. But most yacht parties are likely to be a little more casual than that.

Consider dress pants and a button down shirt or a blazer. A sport coat and tie, maybe with a matching jacket, is also very common for parties on yachts.

A more formal occasion, a wedding for instance, will probably clue you in as to what would be expected in terms of dress. And, hopefully, your hosts are going to be gracious enough to make it clear if you do need to dress to the nines.

You can find some more formal boat shoes and, if things get a little fancier, some dress shoes that don’t have slippery soles will work as well.

Are Cocktail Dresses Appropriate for Women?

yacht chic dress code

At the more formal end of things, a classy yacht party could very well require you to wear a cocktail dress or in rare cases even some kind of fancy gown. Cocktail attire is a little less formal than evening wear and more suited for a casual affair. Hopefully it will be made clear before you agree to show up just how formal the event is, but it’s definitely not unheard of. If it’s a party at night, and you’re going to be moored out on the water with a view of the city, for instance, a dress would be well within reason.

If things aren’t so formal as a boat wedding, then consider a wide-legged pant, a romper, a wrap skirt or really anything you’d wear to a gathering on a beach, or pool type party.

One thing you want to remember when attending any event on a yacht is to not wear heels. I’ve seen it in person and it’s a bad idea. Not that you’re guaranteed to lose your balance, but the odds are definitely leaning towards it. It’s an accident waiting to happen, so stick with flat shoes.

Are all Boat Parties the Same?

People can throw a boat party for weddings, anniversaries, charity events, retirements and probably a hundred other things. Don’t let the fact that it’s on a yacht throw you off if you’ve never attended one. A party is a party, after all.

If you’re unclear of expectations, feel free to ask. Consider bringing a sweater or light jacket just in case it gets cold and remember that good footwear is extra important on a yacht so you keep your balance. Whether it’s ultra formal or super casual, that will never change.

The Bottom Line

Classy but casual is often an easy way to approach dressing on a yacht. If it’s a party, you may need to step it up a notch, but that will really depend on the party itself and what your hosts expect. Consider linen and other very light, breathable fabrics. Remember boat shoes are the best idea to keep your grip on deck, and don’t forget swimsuits as well as sunglasses and other sun-protection gear.

What to Wear on a Yacht: Style Essentials

You love the boating lifestyle and the great marina outdoors, and you're wondering what to wear on a Mediterranean yacht charter. Here are a few handy tips on what to wear on a yacht to look the part.

yacht chic dress code

Whether you’re about to board your chartered luxury yacht for a business brunch, a romantic moonlit dinner on deck, or a weekend of bathing and basking in Mediterranean sea and sunshine, the yacht dress code is essentially simplicity and practicality.

A Time for Leisure

yacht chic dress code

Always keep in mind the very purpose of your yacht holiday and surroundings. While strikingly stylish, a luxury boat stay is an invitation to cast your cares away as you unwind on board. It’s really all about striking a balance between sporting a good look and feeling super comfortable in what you’re wearing. Don’t be too concerned about donning less sophisticated and more casual attire during your charter time at sea. Focus instead on how you will be spending your vacation time in the most relaxed manner possible.

Fashionably Functional

yacht chic dress code

Make sure to bring along lightweight clothing in a soft bag for easy stowing. Shorts, Capri pants and Chinos, as well as casual shirts, tees and vests are great for lounging on deck. Yacht wear is normally available in the trademark nautical tones of red, white and blue – and let’s not forget the iconic and stylishly cool Breton stripe!

yacht chic dress code

Ladies will love wearing flowy dresses, sarongs and kaftans over their bathing costumes during the day, which double as great numbers to don to a romantic dinner on board or ashore.

The Bare Necessities

yacht chic dress code

In addition to applying sunscreen cream with a high SPF, there’s nothing more important than your sunglasses and hat – perhaps even a scarf – to help protect your facial skin from the strong sun. Polarised lenses are simply must-haves, offering maximum UV protection for your eyes throughout those long hours of swimming and sunbathing.

A Cosy Yacht Stay

yacht chic dress code

When chartering a yacht in cooler weather, prepare something warm to throw on for when the evening temperature drops. A denim shirt or light jacket usually does the trick, letting you enjoy a few more hours of deck-lounging to the soothing sound of the water lapping.

The Right Footwear is No Footwear

yacht chic dress code

Here’s where your pointed shoes and stilettos don’t make an appearance. It is customary in the boating world to remove one’s footwear before boarding a vessel, which will ensure a pristine-looking, hygenic boat throughout your stay. Embrace the barefoot vacation spirit, or alternatively wear light-coloured socks, soft-soled slippers or flip flops dedicated for sole use on the yacht.

Make Memories Aboard

yacht chic dress code

No item too fine or precious should be brought along on board, so leave your designer suits and gowns safely in your home wardrobes to be worn for a more appropriate occasion. Good old hardy denim garments generally fit the purpose, as does basic cotton clothing.

yacht chic dress code

You’ll soon feel that this yacht experience is more about enriching your quality time and fuelling your sense of adventure and discovery than about looking your best at all times. More importantly, it’s about feeling your best while taking in the surrounding natural beauty and having a fantastic time in treasured company.

The Sailor's Style Guide: How to Dress at a Yacht Club

If you've been invited to a casual yacht club rendezvous, you'll need the right threads to fit in.  in this guide, we'll walk you through the yacht club attire you'll need to fit in. hint: you can find the perfect outfit head to toe with castaway.

You've been invited to a meal or event at a local yacht club, but you've never been to one before. Suddenly, the panic sets in. What should you wear? Fortunately, there are lots of options and visiting a yacht club does not mean you have to spend a lot of money just to fit in. This post will give you some pointers on yacht club attire so that you feel neither under nor overdressed, and can really enjoy yourself and have a great time at the club.

Before you even think about what to wear, check to see if the yacht club you're going to has a dress code posted online. Most of them do, and the rules can vary from club to club. The Nantucket Yacht Club , for example, requires semi-formal attire for its dinners and cocktail attire including ties for men during its dinner dances and balls. The Hyannis Yacht Club goes into a little more detail. It accepts stylish casual wear including clean, neat jeans and shorts for lunch. For dinner, guests are expected to step it up by leaving the denim at home and wearing sports coats. Different areas of a club may also have different dress rules. Bars and outdoor decks tend to more lax and allow casual clothing.

Sometimes, the easiest way of narrowing down what to wear is to eliminate what you should not wear. This is just a partial list of how not to show up at any kind of yacht club unless you want to be denied admittance or receive a lot of disapproving glares. All rules listed apply to the inside of the club, and can vary for beach and dock rulings.

Flip Flops or Going Barefoot: This rule applies INSIDE the club, or for any meal time. Most people love the beach, but going barefoot is not only unacceptable, but unhygienic.

You'll want to wear appropriate footwear such as sturdy sandals or closed toe shoes. While a lot of children and adults love their flip-flops, they may be a little too casual for a yacht club atmosphere. The most popular choice here is a boat shoe style but a bridle bit driver is always appropriate - check the latest . The lightly worn leather and pencil-curled laces fit the bill in the cool department.

Torn, Stained, or Worn Clothing: Any attire that is showing signs of wear such as rips, stains that never came out, holes, missing buttons, etc. should be left at home.

Baseball Caps and Other Hats: Most yacht clubs prefer that men remove their caps when inside the venue. Save them for the sailing excursions.

Extra points on the water if you rock the Club’s Burgee on the hat!

Swimwear: Just a no-no. Save it for the boat and the beach. A cover-up can be acceptable for the patio.

Going Shirtless: Nope!

Undershirts as Shirts: See above. You may also want to be careful about choosing a t-shirt, particularly one with graphics, when visiting a yacht club. Most prefer that you wear a collared shirt, even if it's a casual one such as a polo shirt.

Tank tops for men and any tank tops for women that are skimpy and don't hide undergarments should be saved for another occasion.

Women have a lot of options when it comes to visiting a yacht club. Linen and cotton make the perfect summer blouses. A light but structured Sleeveless Top paired with a  sweater is perfect for warding off cool sea breezes when you're out on the deck. A polo or collared shirt works well for the yacht club scene as well. You can also consider a dressy blouse that has a little bit of flounce to it. If shorts are allowed for the time and area of the club you're visiting, consider sporting  Sailing  shorts  with a cute anchor embroidery. They're cool, classy, and show off just the right amount of leg. Casual skirts and dresses are perfectly fine as well as long as they're not too short and revealing. If you're attending a party at a yacht club you may need to wear a nice cocktail dress, or a classic Tunic Dress for a day event. Special events such as balls and dinner dances usually specify what is appropriate attire on the invitation.

Don't forget to have fun with accessories! A straw handbag can complete a nautical themed look.

For most casual yacht club occasions, men can't go wrong with a collared shirt and long pants or Cisco Shorts . Pastel and preppy shades such as summer green, hurricane red, and islander blue rule here.

When casual attire is allowed, collared sport or polo shirts are always in fashion. Seersucker and linen shirts are available in several colors and patterns for summer club get-togethers. If jeans are not allowed, seersucker or cotton canvas pants are still casual and comfortable yet dressy enough for all areas of a yacht club. If you really want to show your love of nautical dressing, consider wearing a fun Embroidered Pant !

Or you can opt for solid pants but add some nautical flair with an embroidered belt . Classic summer staples like Seersucker and Madras Patches will make you the talk of the Club, in a good way!

For those chilly sea breezes and evenings, a quarter zip pullover wards off the cool air while keeping you stylish and casual.

It's a good idea to keep a sportcoat and a few ties in your closet just in case the yacht club you're visiting requires it. Opt for a fun all over embroidered jacket, or a Madras Patchwork style to really up your game.

Kids' clothing should conform to the same yacht club rules as established for grown-up guests. If you really want your son to look cute, consider dressing him in the same matching outfit as dad.

What to Wear to a Yacht Party – Your Dress Code Guide!

yacht chic dress code

Dressing for a boat party is different than any other kind of event. While you have good times, you need to look great and most importantly, feel comfortable in your clothing. Also, you need to take some safety precautions into consideration as boats have unpredictable movements. After all, you want to have an exceptional time! Most yacht events take place in the summer, so you need to dress accordingly to the weather. What will be your event about? A Day party? A night party? In this article, you will find out exactly what to wear to a yacht party.

Table of Contents

Most parties are held during the day. You will probably spend most of your time enjoying dancing on the deck with a cocktail in your hand or swimming in the water, so you need an attire comfortable to wear and easy to pull on/off!

  • Choose a swimsuit or a bikini to wear under your clothes. Make sure to pick a color that suits your attire.
  • A flowy dress, short skirt, airy beach pants, or a short over your swimsuit will be perfect for this kind of party. You can also match them with a summary layer or a loose blouse.
  • As for the shoes, flat sandals with soft soles will get you out of trouble. High heels are an absolute no-no as they are not safe on a boat and can scratch the deck.

Accessories

  • You should be wearing sunglasses during the day, but not just any, you need polarized sunglasses to protect 100% your eyes from the UV rays of the sun
  • Try to store your stuff like sunglasses, makeup, and hair clips in a waterproof handbag. It could be useful if it gets wet!
  • Makeup Use only waterproof makeup during the day
  • Opt for a tight swimsuit if you plan to wear it under your cloth. Otherwise, there are stylish good looking swimwears that look more like dress shorts, which you can match with loose shirts and a light jacket
  • The most appropriate clothes for men are loose pants, boating shorts , and jean shorts assorted with light shirts, or polo and a loose vest.
  • Avoid flip-flops and opt for nonmarking boating shoes , like Sperry. These come in a wide variety of styles to choose from and will match any outfit. With these shoes, you can walk in complete tranquility without worrying about hurting your feet or slipping on the wet deck.
  • Opt only for a waterproof watch if you intend to wear one. You don’t want to bother taking it off, and on each time you go for a swim.
  • As mentioned for women above, the same concept applies to men. A good pair of polarized sunglasses is a must!

Night Party

In the evening, you can still wear casual clothes but a bit more dressy. The thin, soft, and flowy textile is more appropriate for night parties. Bring a light jacket with you. It gets cooler in the evening.

  • Princess waist dresses, skirt with flounces, loose pants assorted with dressy tops are the perfect choices. A chic option will be to wear a color-coordinated wrap or a jacket. A long dress harmonized with a nice pair of chandelier earrings is a great option if you opt to dress chicly
  • Here, again, avoid high heels. Flats and low-heeled sandals will be perfect and will suit any outfit.
  • Men should wear comfortable pants with a dress shirt or even a polo, and a light jacket on top.
  • I will say it again, the best shoes to wear on a boat is Sperry, but hey, this is your party, you can pick any other type of boat shoes as long as they are non-marking.
  • Girls, even if high heels elongate your legs and make you more attractive. It is preferable to avoid wearing them on a boat. Opt for boating shoes !
  • Mosquitoes love humidity, especially in the late afternoon. You should bring a repellent with you. You Never know.
  • Try to use only waterproof accessories
  • The sun beat down during the day, bring sunscreen and wear long sleeves to protect you from the sun
  • You can wear long dresses but not too long to avoid tripping.
  • If you are unsure about the type of party, ask the person that organizes the event on the yacht what is and not appropriate.
  • It’s easy to get dehydrated on a yacht because you don’t feel the sun as you are most of the time in the water or on the deck and at sea, there are always winds. PS, wear a hat and drink a lot of water!

Final Words!

Now that you know how to dress for a day and night party on a yacht, all you need to do is have a good time!

8 thoughts on “What to Wear to a Yacht Party – Your Dress Code Guide!”

I have a yacht party to go to and I really needed this guide to make sure that I will take whatever I need. It is really easy to forget a few things and later regret once you reach the party. However, in the evening yacht parties, is it okay to wear heels?

Oh, that’s great, I am sure you’ll have fun!

Yes, I agree with you, it is easy to forget things. This is why it is important to write down what you need before you go:) Once you are on the boat, you cannot go back unless you live nearby.

You cannot wear high heels on a boat, there are few reasons to this. It is not comfortable, not safety and it can damage the deck:) You wouldn’t want this happen.

Thank you for the comment and wish you to have unforgettable moments on the yacht party!

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Daniella, I really like that you divided your article into parts like what to wear in the day or in night! And that you pay attention to both men and women is great, too! often, there are only guides for women. Keep going on as active as you are! Your website is catchy!

Thank you for the kind comment, I really appreciate:) Whats women without men and whats men without women? We can’t live without each other:), Have a wonderful day!

I have been on a yacht for a dinner party sailing in heels! It was a bit troublesome especially going up and down stairs.

Is this post geared toward Northeast US or somewhere else in the world? Here in Florida, it is absolutely okay to wear flip flops to a day yacht party as long as they aren’t cheap! Sperry’s or other boat shoes are acceptable at night for men if the rest of the outfit is semi-casual.

Thank you for the comment:)

Yes, this article concerns everyone. No matter the country. Of course, you can wear flip flops , you can even go barefoot if you wish to, but the risk of hurting your feet or slipping on the deck is much higher. Most charter companies require wearing boat shoes because if something happens and someone didn’t follow the guideline, then the company or the owner of the boat will not be covered by their assurance.

However, Sperry’ shoes are the most recommended on boats as they are comfortable and stylish.

But, again, as long as it is non-marking shoes, you are good to go!

I like how you said that the most appropriate clothes for men are loose pants. My wife and I are planning to go on a trip and we have no idea what to wear. I will definitely share this article with my wife to give her ideas of what to wear in case we go to a boat party.

Hi Dereck, This would be a great idea! I am sure your wife will find something nice to wear:) Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!

How to decide what to wear on a yacht

What activities will you be doing.

To determine what you should wear on a yacht, first think about the activities you will be doing. Will you be swimming? Snorkeling? Jet skiing? or simply relaxing on the deck? Each activity requires different clothing and accessories for comfort.

For example, you’ll want to bring a swimsuit if you are swimming or jet skiing. However, if it’s a more formal event, such as dinner and dancing, you’ll want to wear more dressier attire.

What is the weather like?

The weather is also an important factor in what to wear on a yacht. If it’s hot and sunny, shorts and t-shirt might be best. If it’s cold or raining, you may want to bring extra layers like a jacket or windbreaker that you can take off if it gets too hot.

What does the dress code say?

It’s also important to check for any dress codes that may be in place. If you’re attending a fancy event on the yacht, your attire should reflect it – don’t forget to check for any requirements, such as wearing formal attire or a specific color dress.

FAQ: What to wear on a yacht

Can you wear jeans on a yacht.

While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, it’s important to take into consideration the type of yacht you’ll be visiting and the occasion.

For casual trips aboard smaller vessels and day cruises, wearing jeans can be acceptable, depending on the context. For example, if the outing includes activities such as swimming or kayaking, a lightweight pair of jeans might be more suitable than something more formal.

What do you wear on a yacht day trip?

When it comes to dressing for a yacht day trip, comfort is key. Opt for comfortable yet stylish pieces that won’t limit your mobility. While Stiletto heels are not ideal for a day on the boat, sandals or wedges with good grip are perfect choices.

Additionally, dresses, skirts, rompers, and jumpsuits are great options to wear on a yacht day trip. You can opt for lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen or even a few pieces made of flowy fabric that won’t cling to your skin. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a pair of shorts with a flowy blouse for a relaxed but chic look.

Accessories are also important when it comes to dressing for a yacht day trip. A fun hat, sunglasses, and statement jewelry can all help make your outfit complete.

What do you wear on a yacht at night?

At night, you should aim to dress a bit more formally. Women can wear a dress or skirt with a nice blouse and some jewelry and add a blazer or cardigan if it’s chilly.

A nice pair of trousers with a top or blouse is also always appropriate. Footwear should be smart and comfortable, such as low-heeled pumps or sandals.

If you’re planning to go swimming later on, it’s best to bring a change of clothes, such as a swimming costume and cover-up. Accessorize with a clutch bag, statement necklace, or scarf for a stylish touch. Whatever you wear, be sure to feel comfortable and confident on the yacht.

Yachty by Nature

Yacht rock outfits, yacht rock outfits 101.

Whether you just discovered the art of smooth or been digging smooth soft rock for a while now, the subject of Yacht Rock Outfits is on your mind. Let me just say, for those about to dock, we salute you. There is an unmistakable moment when Yacht Rock is revealed to you. For me, it happened at a fancy industry party in LA. This fab girl came up and mic dropped it so smoothly to my then 80’s band, Neon Nation , saying “you guys play any yacht rock”? Holy crap, I pretty much spit out my drink and fell to the floor wondering what I was in for.

“You walked in to the party, like you were walking onto a yacht.”

Yachty Attire

The rest is history and I’m now well into 7 years of playing keyboards in a nationally successful yacht rock band, Yachty by Nature . No doubt, I’m living that dream and it goes without saying, I’m deep in the yacht myself. With weekly yacht party after monthly yacht wedding and more, I’m becoming a Yacht Attire expert in thought and practice and already guiding the band and others in this area of fashion.

Truly, if you get the clothing right, enough people with that common goal, just add yacht music and the fun ensues. Truth be told, I’ve watched as a room full of punk rockers that committed to the groovy, eclectic yacht rock dress code transformed like you wouldn’t believe.  They turned a simple celebration with a yacht rock band into a full scale 1978 throwback LOVE FEST and the clothes were off the hook. The energy, the vibe, the clothes, the music became something so magical all its own. Build the yacht and they will sail to it.

So, next time you are having a yacht party or watching your favorite yacht rock band indulge yourself with an epic outfit that will make all it happen. It’s not just the music, the band, the vibe, the look, the energy. It’s the sum of its parts and those smooth outfits have the mighty power to transfix your situation.

The Captain’s Hat…

hefner yacht rock outfits attire clothes fashion yachty by nature

Yep, you guessed it, the fastest coronation to yacht rock royalty is the Captain’s Hat.  Buy one, make one, bedazzle one or borrow one. In fact, the sky is the limit here so let your creativity reign if you are gonna go for it.  But, just get one somehow, some way and you are on the yacht. In fact, Broner makes a very comfortable, quality, straightforward and good looking hat that fits well.  Additionally, it avoids the cheap fit and look of those basic hats on Amazon. Do yourself a favor, get a hat or dig deep in the vault and find a classic, vintage, or authentic captain’s hat online. Additionally, we’ve seen some pretty cool and unique creations out there, but for simplicity, fit, and value, Broner is the answer.  Lastly, remember what Hefner did for the captains hat!

Yacht Rock Stripes get it done…

No matter what color, stripes will be the 2nd easiest way to begin your yacht fashion transformation. Put on a red and white striped shirt (or blue or black mainly) and you’ll be sailing in no time. In fact, stripes are probably the #1 most sighted outfit at a yacht rock party. Just know that it’s only the start. When you accessorize over the stripes with a complementary pant color or scarf, ascot, belt, and obviously the captain’s hat or more, you’ve earned your captain’s bars quicker than you can say Ship Shape! Don’t forget to keep it simple, too much or conflicting stripes will sink that ship just as fast.

That 70’s look…

yacht rock outfits what a fool believes los angeles band Yacht Rock Orange County OC Premier Yacht Rock Tribute Ultimate Best Smooth yachty by nature

Gettin’ Yachty @ Costello’s in Mission Viejo

Due to the strong connection between the silly, the goofy, the fun and the yacht party, going retro will set a course for adventure. Call it the Ron Burgundy effect or just throwing back to the 1977 duds they wore on Midnight Special , this look is uber sexy and may attract the opposite sex faster than any other yacht look. In fact, you don’t have to look too far to find polyester or denim clad jean meat at many yacht rock concerts. Additionally, the fake mustache works wonders whether you go 70’s vintage or any different yachty outfit.  More importantly, get bonus points on your yacht rock outfits if you can get the feathered hair going!  Polyester, print shirts, and for the ladies, buy that disco dress and some fabulous glasses and you’re ready to yacht!

The Yacht Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club…

Think Caddyshack, Marina del Rey, golfing, the harbor, and tennis. Moreso, put a tennis sweater over that polo or even better go up the ladder and put on that navy blue blazer with an ascot and some yellow glasses. Actually, that’s the calling card for us in Yachty by Nature! Pretend that you’re christening the Flying Wasp or dropping anchor with Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack and you’ll be flying indeed. Or even better, watch Caddyshack to get in the mood for your party and let inspiration take hold…and even a few classic movie lines. In fact, if you look around the golf club or yacht club scenes, your creativity is sparked immediately.  The outfits jump right off the screen and wreak of Yacht Club greatness.  Speaking of movies, we’ve even seen a die hard Yachty arrive in the Goldie Hawn outfit from the movie Overboard. Keep your yacht rock outfits classy San Diaaaaaago!

Go Hawaiian on your Yacht Rock outfits…

yachty hawaiian shirt attire clothing clothes wear suit uniform costume

Get Nauti !

Lastly, this category is a catch all for everything nautical, yachty, and seaworthy.  Use your imagination or stick to the basics.  You can don the captain’s outfit with shoulder bars easily for the Love Boat vibe.  Or, you can just look like Charlie’s Angels coming off a yacht in 1978.  Literally any type of ocean, beach, seaside, or otherwise yachty type of clothing will do.  The scarf around the neck, the boat shorts and the Nantucket red pants and plaid shirt all qualify as supremely yachty fashion.  When in doubt, check yourself by asking, “would I wear this outfit in the summer in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard?”  Most importantly, if the answer is yes, you are yacht rock camera ready.  In fact, let’s not forget the boat shoes, deck shoes, or Sperry Top Siders all together.

Yacht Rock Outfits Wildcard…

Never forget that there’s really no authority on this subject so you can always just go for it.  Sometimes, the more uniform, standard, and strict we get on the yacht, the more mundane we become.  Therefore, don’t be afraid to dive into the vanity t-shirt, go stripes and ascot, and generally mix it up.  There are no hard and fast rules behind the Yacht Rock outfit, just your creativity and passion for the music.  From experience, we’ll go captain’s outfit one day and crazy boat shirt the next.  Ultimately, we’ve seen it all from the stage and relish the moments when people go wild with it.  In fact, there’s probably even a yacht rock adjacent area for the Pirate Party as well.  Captain Crunch sightings aside, those parties can really bring together the nauti, yachty, knotty by nature and then some.  In the end, go for it and see what happens.  It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eyepatch.  Honestly, it’s all about the fun so get Kraken!!!

As always, let the vibe be your guide.  Thus, for your next yacht rock themed party, concert, or just a Yachty night on the town, get your ensemble going.  Whether you are new to the yacht or an old deck hand, that outfit will crank up the experience.  So, commit to making that statement with your yacht clothing or up your game and improve on the garb you already have.  As we well know, you can never have enough options to mix it up for a fun night with Yachty by Nature or some other occasion.

Happy to be your guide here.  Feel free to comment and add some great ideas on this post or on social media. #yachtrock #yachtrockoutfits #yachtybynature #yachtattire #yachtrockfashion

Thanks for giving props to Tiki Caliente! I would like to point out that the most proper Hawaiian shirt to wear to a Yacht Rock concert is one that would have been for sale between 1978 and 1983! Think to yourself, would Magnum PI or Pablo Cruise wear this? And if so, bring it on! Most Magnum PI kind of Hawaiian shirts go great with a white jacket and white shorts. Vintage late ‘70s and early ‘80’s Hawaiian shirts can be found Online in Etsy yacht rock shops, and on eBay. Not expensive, and so ”vintage smooth”. Look like a pro, and be “era appropriate”. Girls can find vintage 70’s nautical dresses on Etsy, too!

Whether You’re on Land or Sea, Summer Calls for Nautical Fashion

There’s something about being by the sea in the summer that sparks ample sartorial inspiration and joy. From sweet sailor collars, classic blue and white prints, and of course, many a stripe , this roster of maritime pieces is the foundation of any nautical fashion wardrobe. It also seems like we are not alone in our embrace of the nautical with designers like Prada adding a maritime flair to their SS22 collection and Gucci featuring naval embellishments as seen on this shirt, below.

Countless other brands have taken the hint too, like Miu Miu and Saint Laurent, and their versions of mariniere shirting. House of Aama’s matching red and white striped cropped top and skirt is a fresh take on classic sailor stripes. Breezy dresses paired with a straw bucket hat from Paco Rabanne will keep you cool and shaded from the baring sun during the day (don’t forget sunscreen), while cozy cardigans from Maje and La Ligne will warm you up when the sun sets on the water. Reimagine the boat shoe in one of these practical, yet chic, summer sandals . This summer, whether you find yourself strolling by the Seine in Paris or braving the winds on a sailboat, leaning into these seafaring staples will be as easy, and as inviting, as a sea breeze. Celebrate nautical fashion this summer and shop the below maritime-inspired frock. One last thing, bon voyage!

Dressing for a Yacht Club Party

Lucky you!  You have just received an invitation for your very first yacht club party.  For most people this brings up the question “What on earth do I wear?”.  Have no fear!  We work with many yacht clubs to make sure their members look sharp with custom ties and scarves .  Here are some of our style tips to help you navigate the waters of yacht club fashion and pull together an amazing outfit.

Yacht Club Wear – Do Nots

While yacht club attire can vary by club and time of day of the event, there are certain items that just won’t do.  You should always avoid the following:

  • T-Shirts / Tank Tops
  • Revealing clothing (i.e. cut-off shirts, mini skirts, etc)
  • Wrinkled or otherwise “sloppy” attire

Also, while you may be tempted to don an ascot or jaunty captain’s hat … don’t.  For most people this will come across as cliche rather than sporty.  Classic styles, nautical colors and smart layers are the best way to go when building your dock-side ensemble.  You can also shop many of the clubs’ stores for shirts and ties embellished with the club logo.

Yacht Club Wear –  Dos

Hopefully, your invitation indicates the dress code.  But if it doesn’t, there are two general rules of thumb.  If the party is during the day, then select attire in the “country club casual” category.  If the party is in the evening, opt for traditional cocktail party wear.

Country Club Casual for Men

A classic polo or Oxford shirt is the standard for men.  Shirts should be clean, in good condition and neatly pressed.  These should be worn with black slacks or khakis.  When it comes to shoes, loafers in brown or black are the most popular choice.  A less popular but also acceptable footwear option is a pair of leather boots in black or brown.  Some yacht clubs require blazers even for daytime events.  To be safe, check the attire requirements posted on the club’s website or call them prior to the event.

Country Club Casual for Women

Just like men, polo shirts paired with well-cut slacks are an acceptable option for women.  Women can also choose a tailored blouse worn with a knee-length cotton skirt for a slightly dressier look.  Another popular ensemble is a simple summer dress with minimal accessories.  A cashmere sweater is the perfect outer layer to protect from cool breezes.  Ballet flats are the top shoe choice when dressing country club casual.

Cocktail Attire for Men

While not as formal as black-tie, cocktail wear is decidedly dressier than daytime apparel at a yacht club.  Dress slacks with a jacket and tie or a full suit are both appropriate options for an evening event.  Choose neutrals and subdued tones over bright colors or prints.  Men should accessorize with a black leather belt and matching shoes.  Stick with a loafer or Oxford style shoe and be sure your socks coordinate with your pants.

Cocktail Attire for Women

Cocktail dresses should be knee-length or midi-length in a solid or very subtle print.  If you are having a tough time finding the right color, the quintessential “little black dress” is always a smart choice.  Another popular trend for evening events is a formal women’s pant suit.  When it comes to accessorizing, less is more.  Choose a single statement piece of jewelry rather than a multitude of pieces and opt for a clutch instead of a shoulder bag.  Heels, dressy sandals, and ballet flats are all acceptable shoe options.

Wondering What to Wear to the U.S. Open? 8 Editor-Approved Outfits

Draw inspiration from our favorite celebrity looks and the season’s biggest trends.

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Of course, you can wear whatever you want to the U.S. Open. The annual tennis tournament doesn’t enforce a strict dress code. However, it’s still fun to put a little effort into your game-day outfit. Before you go all out, remember that this is a sporting event. The day could be filled with a lot of walking up and down stadium stairs as well dealing with sweltering, end-of-summer weather. So, you’ll want to pick a look that strikes the perfect balance of sophisticated ease.

On the other side of the spectrum, you could always lean into the tenniscore trend (when in Rome, right?) Kule has the cutest white pleated mini skirt that matches the sporty aesthetic. On the other hand, Miu Miu put a runway-worthy twist on the preppy miniskirt-and-polo combination by layering a checkered button-up shirt and peekaboo skivvies underneath the look.

Don’t forget to put some thought into your shoes and accessories. Comfortable loafers or chic tennis shoes are ideal for long days—not to mention, it’s wise to keep the bag policy in mind when finalizing your look. Thankfully, you don’t have to spend money on a clear pouch. At the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center , handbags smaller than 12 inches wide by 12 inches tall by 16 inches long are fine.

Discover exactly what to wear to the U.S. Open below.

Corporate cosplay pushes streetwear aside as gen z’s hottest new style trend.

Some streetwear brands no longer reign “supreme.”

In fact, designer Supreme — the preferred brand of hype beasts — saw resale numbers decline by 25% year over year, a recent report from The Real Real revealed, and the second-hand sales of its competitor Off-White sank 34%. Similarly, sales of Nike Jordans slipped 35% year over year.

Noelle Sciacca, The Real Real’s associate director of fashion and strategic partnerships, told Fashionista that the streetwear slump could be caused by the death of renowned designer Virgil Abloh and the public downfall of rapper Kanye “Ye” West who operates his own brand Yeezy.

With the two figureheads of streetwear gone, “the community welcomed a shift into something new,” she said.

The unlikely underdog? Corporate couture.

“Around the same time, we saw the widespread rise of quiet luxury,” Sciacca explained. “Customers stocked their closets with neutral-colored blazers, trousers and minimalist suiting separates. Over time, however, fatigue for the simple uniform began to set in, and there was an increased desire again for self expression.”

Customers shopping at the first Supreme store in Shanghai

“ Corp-core ,” the 9-to-5 chic marked by tailored suiting, button-ups and more, has soared in popularity among celebrities, influencers and the average Jane. In recent months, A-listers like Sydney Sweeney and Zendaya have jumped on the polished —  dare we say “demure” — trend, which industry pundits describe as “subversive,” given some of the chaotic, colorful “dopamine” dressing pushed forth by Gen Z.

“Each generation has an affinity to reinterpret popular styles from the past,” she added. “We witnessed the Y2K fashion resurrection, and now there’s an increased interest in 1980s and 1990s workwear.”

But the buttoned-up look isn’t just reserved for the confines of the cubicle. Fashionistas are hitting the streets in the strictly business style, which Sciacca calls “corporate appropriation.”

According to the data, the “office siren” aesthetic also boosted the popularity and prices of boardroom garments — ties cost 51% more on average this year and suiting sales are up 25%.

The Real Real’s resale report also found that Gen Z was the generation most likely to wear ballet flats to the club, with Chanel as the most sought-after brand.

Louis Vuitton was the most-searched brand overall, with Pharrell William’s men’s collection bolstering interest, while Chanel and Prada, the latter of which is also beloved by Gen Z, trailed behind.

Consumers were reportedly splurging more on arm candy, too. Shoppers spent 20% more on handbags than they did five years prior, and this year alone, customer spending in the $1,000 to $3,000 grew 13%, which the company said was “the largest uptick of any price category.”

The company looked to pop culture pillars like TikTok and television to determine the next generation’s shopping habits, which Levesque said denotes a “seismic shift” in the fashion industry.

With an interest in investment pieces, The Real Real listed The Row’s Margaux, Hermes Kelly and Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo bags as the best bang for customers’ buck that can yield returns down the line. And, as vintage demand reaches fever pitch, the luxury reseller also warned customers that convincing counterfeit bags, or “superfakes,” are on the rise.

“It’s no longer about what’s new being what’s next—it’s about what’s going to last,” Rati Sahi Levesque, The Real Real’s president and COO, said in the report’s opening statement. “More than ever, shoppers are curating their wardrobes with a focus on distinctiveness and enduring value.”

Sarah Jessica Parker's loose white shirt proves that slouchy chic is the dress code of the season for when comfort calls

Slouchy and chic aren't two words you would typically pair together, but if there's one person who can marry the styles and create a sophisticated ensemble, it's Carrie Bradshaw.

There have been plenty of exciting sneak previews of the newest season of AJLT, including some expectedly standout ensembles, but Sarah Jessica Parker has been seen sporting an outfit recipe that puts comfort at the forefront - and it contains something we never thought we would see her wear.

Marking an unexpected departure from tutus and Manolos, she was pictured strutting the streets of New York City in a baggy white shirt, some grey tracksuit bottoms, and sporty vintage-style trainers. If you're someone who wants to prioritise comfort in your capsule wardrobe but struggle to make more casual pieces look sophisticated, this look is one to take inspiration from.

Despite the uncharacteristic trackies, this look remains true to Carrie Bradshaw with the addition of her timeless pearl necklace. One of the best ways to make relaxed outfits feel more refined is with the addition of stylish accessories that can make even loungewear look chic. Channel the Princess of Wales' style with some Monica Vinader top picks, or copy Carrie's look with some pearls that will complement any colour palette.

Shop SJP's look

An oversized white shirt will become one of your most worn purchases, so it's worth investing in a high quality piece. Style with everything from midi skirts to denim jeans - and even tracksuit bottoms - to give your outfit a dressed-up feel without compromising on comfort.

What makes SJP's trackies so wearable is the tapered shape and split hem that elevates them beyond more relaxed styles, and this ME+EM pair boasts both of these qualities. Loose but not too oversized, they will take you everywhere.

Neutral trainers are just as essential in your work wardrobe as they are in your travel capsule wardrobe . Ideal for walking around the city but versatile and easy to style thanks to the minimalist feel, you won't need any other footwear in your arsenal.

Although tracksuit bottoms are designed for lounging around, there are plenty of ways to make them feel smarter for all manner of occasions. Straight leg cuts typically have a chicer feel than cuffed options, and dark hues tend to be easier to dress up than lighter ones.

The simplest method for making them appear put-together is balancing out the slouchy silhouette with a tailored top like a button-up shirt or blouse that has a formal feel. Or, if you want to wear an equally as comfortable top, a crisp white slogan tee is both loose and fashion-forward whilst being more elevated than loungewear options. Come autumn, a chic cardigan or cashmere jumper can offer cosiness and a smart look that will even be suitable for the office.

Finish off the outfit with a pair of the best white trainers or some ballet flats to bring a feminine feel back to the oversized shape of your look without sacrificing the comfort appeal.
