It wasn’t so long ago that 30- to 35-foot cruising sailboats were likely to be the largest yachts found in many a harbor. And while 40-something and even 50-something footers are all the rage at boat shows today, there’s a lot to be said for setting sail on a boat big enough to carry family and friends, but still small enough to be easily maintained and handled alone from time to time. Small cruising sailboats are simple to dock or tie up to a mooring, and finding long-term marina space is easier as well.
Choosing a cruising sailboat, no matter the size, is a big decision. And it helps to have a trusted list of boats to get started. Here, then, is a look at 10 of the best daysailers , weekenders and coastal cruising sailboats under 35 feet that are all in production and can be purchased new.
Alerion Sport 30
A quarter-century ago, Garry Hoyt launched what would come to be known as the daysailer genre with the introduction of the Alerion Express 28, a boat designed by the late Carl Schumacher that featured a minimal interior and a large cockpit where an owner and guests could enjoy the simple joy of sailing. Traditional and lovely looking—but with a quite modern underbody and a powerful sail plan—Hoyt, ever the marketer, proclaimed the boat to be “the prettiest girl at the dance.”
Since then, a number of siblings ranging from 20 to 41 feet have been added to the Alerion family, including the Alerion Sport 30, which retains the graceful sheer line, oval ports and stylish overhangs of the original Schumacher design. Yet with input from naval architect Langan Design Partners, it also embraces a solid measure of performance-oriented DNA.

Bavaria Cruiser 34
In every Boat of the Year contest, it seems, a boat rises up after sea trials to make a lasting impression on the judges. For 2018, that boat was the Bavaria Cruiser 34.
Says Boat of the Year Judge Tim Murphy, “The Bavaria was a lovely boat to sail. It has a single rudder, and she answered her helm just beautifully in the conditions we had today. We started off with around 10 knots of breeze that built to 13 to 15 knots. As a sailboat, it was just a pleasurable sailing experience, among the best we had during our judging. It was among the boats that felt like a really happy sailing experience.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1
Sailed as part of the 2020 Boat of the Year sea trials, the 31-foot-3-inch Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 was the compact yacht best-equipped and spec’d out as a dedicated cruising boat, and not coincidentally, it was also awarded the title of Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. But don’t let her cozy interior accommodations fool you; this is also one peppy little vessel.

The 2017 Boat of the Year (BOTY) contest featured a stellar crop of crossover cruiser/racers; however, when all the testing was said and done, our independent panel of judges was sold on the Dehler 34, naming it the year’s Best Performance Cruiser. Designed by the highly regarded Judel/Vrolijk naval-architecture consortium, whose reputation was fostered by longtime success in international yacht-racing circles, the 34-footer combined contemporary good looks and a sweet turn of speed with better-than-average comfort and accommodations below. It didn’t hurt that the boat, nicely equipped at $215,000, was the least-expensive entry in the entire 2017 fleet. All in all, it proved to be a winning formula.

Dufour Grand Large 360
Dufour Yachts introduced its new 360 Grand Large model to CW’s Boat of the Year team in 2018 as a coastal cruiser intended for a couple or perhaps a small family. With that in mind, judge Alvah Simon found numerous clever elements to praise within the boat’s 35-foot-2-inch hull—a relatively modest LOA compared to the many 40-, 50- and 60-footers on display at the U.S. Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland.

After a roughly 10-year hiatus from the U.S. marketplace, the Slovenian builder Elan is back in a big way. For the 2017 Boat of the Year contest, the company launched a pair of new boats in the States, including the Elan E4, a 34-foot-9-inch performance cruiser with an emphasis on performing, designed by renowned British naval architect Rob Humphreys. The brand has been in business for seven decades and lately is perhaps even better known in America for its skis. Not surprisingly, given its complementary product lines—lots of sailors are fine skiers—its boats are as sleek and sporty as its boards.

Grand Soleil 34
Way back in the 1970s, when the well-known Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was just getting started, its first model was a Finot-designed 34-footer. With over 300 units sold, it was an instant success, and launched the company on an upward trajectory that spanned the intervening decades, mostly with an ongoing series of much larger, more complex racer/cruisers. For 2020, the builder decided to return to its roots with a completely revamped Grand Soleil 34, and it’s a terrific boat.

Value. How does one determine it? Price is most certainly a factor. In the case of new boats, and our Boat of the Year competition, it means something more. As sailors, we wish to recognize good boats that not only are affordable but offer other, tangible rewards. The ability to get couples and families out on the water, to have a weekend escape, to take them on coastal vacations and even maybe a sabbatical to the islands, all without breaking the bank. For 2019, the judging panel determined that one boat had the potential to do these things better than the rest, which is why they awarded the Best Value prize to the Hanse 348.
With a price tag under $200,000, during sea trials the Hanse 348 wowed the judging team from the get-go. “In only about 8 knots of breeze, we were seeing 5.7 knots upwind and pointing very nicely, and even registered 6.5 knots once we cracked off,” said Tim Murphy. “It’s a pretty sweet little boat.”

Italia 9.98
Of the performance cruisers that made their North American debut in 2020, in terms of sheer appearance, the futuristic 34-foot Italia 9.98 was easily the most distinctive. There are actually two versions of the boat: the 34 Club—which is the cruising alternative, the primary features of which are its twin wheels—and the 34 Fuoriserie—the racing model, and the one we tested, with its tiller steering being the identifying characteristic.

I was delighted when the Hutchins family asked me to design a new yacht as the latest addition to Com-Pac Yacht’s line of “Good Little Ships”. The Com-Pac development and marketing team had few limitations beyond – it must be shoal draft, stable, sea kindly and fast enough to give good results under PHRF rules. We knew we couldn’t go wrong relying on the tried and true Herreshoff practice of combining generous sailplan, moderate displacement, long waterline, generous beam, high ballast/displacement ratio and the redeeming benefits of shoal draft, made amazingly efficient using the famous Henry Scheel Keel configuration. The final result is the Com-Pac 35. We have presented a hull and keel combination that in conjunction with the sailplan will give the maximum performance possible without sacrificing the comfort and convenience you have come to expect from Com-Pac Yachts. A traditionally styled, shoal draft, cruising yacht? YES! A high tech, performance-oriented underbelly and sailplan, establishing if desired, a club-racing contender? YES! The 12’ beam allows for a voluminous interior. From the aft cabin with double berth to the forward cabin with a large sea-going V-berth, every inch of the Com-Pac 35 interior has been completely thought out with the cruising sailor in mind. The interior is complete, private, comfortable, and functional. An interesting adjunct to the livability of the Com-Pac 35 is the integrating of stereo, television, video planer and microwave oven as standard equipment. The most exciting part of this project has been the design concept. While we have maintained all the principles that have made Com-Pac a success such as, traditional styling, cruising comfort, quality construction, and competitive pricing, the new Com-Pac 35 will herald the beginning of a new concept for a Com-Pac yacht. The interior of this vessel is striking, with teak joinery that far exceeds the average build. Upon entering the companionway, there is a u-shaped galley to port and a spacious quarterberth and nav station to starboard.
The centerline table folds out to accommodate 6 people easily, and there is beautiful woodwork and detail all throughout the salon. The cushions are new and look great. The signature stained glass trademarks the Baba 35--this one is of a swallow. See the photos! It's beautiful.
The v-berth has an insert to make it into a double, and the head to port is large with marble and teak detail. There is excessive storage, and the living space on this boat is comfortable and incredible!

'Svea av Valleviken' , an Overseas 35 Sailboat for Sale

The winter in the Caribbean is warm and sunny; 28 ° in the air and 28 ° in the water, but with a breeze that constantly blows which makes it comfortable.
Explore Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique before sailing over to St Vincent & the Grenadines with Union Island, Mustique, Bequia, Tobago Cays, Canouan and other fine smaller islands. Further north are St Lucia and Martinique where many go to refill with French wine and French garlic cheeses…
All the islands in the 'Windwards' are within easy reach. Many cruisers stay for several years because they have such a good time.
If you are a little more adventurous, you can steer further towards the Panama Canal and the South Pacific, where the sailing season begins in April/May.
About the Overseas 35
'Svea av Valleviken', an Overseas 35 launched 2015, is a well thought out long-distance pocket cruiser designed by the well-known Swedish designer Rolf Eliasson who did not want to compromise on the sailing characteristics when he designed the boat in the early 1980s.
The Overseas 35 is a strong, safe around-the-world cruiser with decent space for a couple and all the equipment. The hard dodger makes long night watches protected and roller furling mainsail and genoa means that you rarely or never have to go up on deck. There is also a smaller self-tacking staysail for a bit of extra drive.
The boat journalist Curt Gelin wrote in his book '700 Sailboats in Test' about the Overseas 35:
"The Overseas 35 is a special long-distance cruiser signed by Rolf Eliasson. He was among the first with a relatively light boat equipped with a split lateral under body and with an interior for two on extended voyages. The boat came about when an advertiser in Gothenburg wanted to realize his vision of his own, perfect long-distance boat. The freeboard height was balanced with the needs of long-distance sailors and became high enough for standing height, but no more. In this way, the center of gravity ended up low, with increased stability as a result. The Overseas 35 was unusually nice to look at."

An extra-large sink is good for many tasks and has both fresh and saltwater taps with foot pumps.
Fridge about 50 liters with top lid near the sink, with a Danfoss BD35F compressor.
A separate 230V freezer of about 20 liters is located under the navigation table and which can be operated over inverters from the battery bank or shore power.
The Rig and Sailing Characteristics
The mast is a one-piece extrusion by Seldén.
The 25m 2 mainsail was made by Sailmasters in Polyant Crosscut Dacron 351 grams. (P = 11.85m, E = 4.25m).
The mainsail has no battens and the leach is concave so as not to cause problems when rolling in - the reduced sail area is compensated by a 1.5m higher mast. The loose-footed mainsail makes the sail very easy to trim.
The 28m 2 roller genoa (T = 13.24m, J = 4.28m, canvas weight 280gr) and self-tacking jib of 12m 2 (T = 10.04m, J = 2.64m, canvas weight 360gr is able to be used as a storm jib as well). Both from Hamels Sails, Karlshamn, new in 2015.
Total sail area is approximately 65m 2 .
Curre Gelin writes in his test: "The sailing properties gave a feeling of great safety, with fine balance, and that it was easy to drive, but still calm in the movements. At sea, the boat guarded well and cut through the lake dry and soft with the help of its slim, laid-out foreship. In the blows, it turned easily and the stability felt perfectly balanced with a definite final stiffness, without being over-stiff or sluggish in light winds”.
'Svea' carries approximately 180 liters of diesel in two fuel tanks, with another 100 liters extra carried in cans.
Fuel consumption at 6 knots is about 1.5 liters per hour.
The Technical Systems
A Ctek DC-DC converter optimizes the charge from the motor generator.
A Victron smart MMTP regulator from the four solar cells (2 x 80W on doghouse roof plus 2 x 24W on swivel post in the stern - makes a big difference).
There is also an Air Breeze wind generator of 400W which has its own regulator.
The smart controller from Victron and a battery meter (Nasa BM-1) keep track of the charging and voltage in the batteries. The two batteries are brand new in January 2020, at 2x105Ah from Trojan. An Optima Bluetop 55 Ah is a starter battery.
'Svea' has hydraulic steering and an autopilot.
Lots of spare parts and extra equipment (some are not fitted yet, as a gas alarm).
A new Honda four-stroke outboard 2.3 hp (2020), and an emergency transmitter (PLB + Inreach) are included in the inventory.
There are certainly a few things to fix 6 years after launch, but all-in-all this is one of the best pocket cruisers that was constructed. Comparable quality to Halberg Rassy and Najad (and originally from the same Swedish island of Orust).
