Douglas Hensman

Blue-sky superyacht concepts range from pure fantasy to easily buildable. Here are our 10 favorites in the last year.

To stand out from the crowd, more and more superyacht buyers—many new to the market—are challenging designers to break molds, go extreme, and think way outside of the traditional box. And they’re doing it with head-spinning bow designs, huge windows, and much larger interior and exterior spaces.

They’re also trading traditional monohulls for big-volume catamarans and trimarans, taking inspiration from oddball places—an aircraft carrier or 1930s Hollywood-style automobile—and, at the same time, future-proofing them with new propulsion systems, including hydrogen fuel cells, solar power, and advanced battery power.

These 10 concepts, from a range of designers and studios, show that the future of superyacht design has never been more exciting—if at times a little bizarre.

Superyacht Concept Aware

Sinot, ‘Aware’

Not all superyachts need to look like multi-tiered wedding cakes. That’s according to Dutch studio Sinot Yacht, which has just penned conceptual renderings for a sleek, almost-minimalist cruiser called  Aware . Yes, the 262-footer does have the look of some super-stylish European river boat from the likes of Viking or Uniworld. But the aim here is to optimize the spaces experienced owners tend to use the most. Like the owner’s suite on the main deck, which in  Aware  spans the full beam and totals over 860 square feet. Then there’s the super-size beach club with its twin fold-out terraces, gym, bar, cinema, 36-foot-long pool, and glass-sided dining area. As for power, Sinot envisions a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system good for a 21 mph max, and a 4,000 nautical mile range at 14 mph.

Superyacht Concepts Mission Icon Yachts

Icon Yachts, ‘Mission’

Ice-breaking, globe-trotting expedition yachts are nothing new for Holland’s Icon Yachts. Its rugged, 224-foot, converted ice-breaker  Ragnar  literally wrote the rule-book on building high-latitude-friendly luxury superyachts. But Icon’s concept for a brand-new, ultimate explorer it’s calling  Mission  adds Indiana Jones–levels of off-the-grid exploration. Designed by Dutch explorer-yacht specialist Bernd Weel,  Mission  is all towering, ice-crushing bow, trademark geometric hull sides, and endless space for all that adventure-seeking gear. Here we’re talking six tenders of all sizes, a three-person submersible, an Airbus H130 helicopter, and space midships for a multitude of shipping containers for when you want to become the next Jacques Cousteau. As for range, Icon would target over 6,000 nautical miles.

Superyacht Concepts Waugh Decadence

Andy Waugh Yacht Design, ‘Decadence’

Flick through the pages of any automotive history book and you’ll notice that 1930s design is dominated by the outrageous, teardrop-fendered creations of the French duo of Figoni et Falaschi. Their designs look to be the inspiration behind London-based designer Andy Waugh’s jaw-dropping concept for a 264-foot catamaran he quite aptly calls  Decadence . Featuring a central hull flanked by four teardrop-like pods, the concept evolves the idea of so-called SWATH catamaran hull design used in a number of oil-platform support, research vessels, and even some superyachts. Providing immense stability through reduced roll and pitch, the design makes perfect sense for a superyacht. One drawback: the yacht’s massive, marina-unfriendly 98-foot beam. Though that becomes a positive when you consider  Decadence ‘s vast owner’s suite measures 66 feet wide and almost 100 feet long.

Superyacht Concepts Oceanco

Oceanco, ‘Aeolus’

When the Dutch superyacht maestros at Oceanco release a blue-sky design, the concept is likely just a few steps away from reality. Fresh from delivering the 410-foot  Koru , the world’s largest sailing yacht, to new owner Jeff Bezos, and the 357-foot  Seven Seas  to Steven Spielberg, Oceanco has unveiled  Aeolus , a concept for a highly sustainable 430-foot gigayacht. Drawn by former Rolls-Royce head of design Giles Taylor, this curvaceous, quad-deck world cruiser looks to the future by incorporating Oceanco’s Energy Transition Platform (ETP) philosophy. The propulsion could start with diesel-electric power, with battery banks charged by twin MTU V16 diesel generators. Then, as technologies advance, it could more to more advanced fuel types such as methanol or other, even wilder technologies like nuclear power.

Superyacht concepts Star Trek

Anthony Glasson, ‘Star Trek’

Designed to boldly go across oceans, this concept for a massive 275-foot trimaran is said to have been inspired by Hong Kong–based designer Anthony Glasson’s love of the TV show “Star Trek”—especially the Starship  Enterprise . Viewed bow-on, you can see why: The slender, wave-piercing bow, the twin side hulls, and rounded glass upper observation deck have USS  Enterprise  written all over it. But the trimaran form definitely adds to its function, with the wide beam creating an expansive “courtyard” that’s part enclosed and part open, housing a hot tub—one of three aboard—a gym, a bar, sunpads galore and even a helipad-turned-dancefloor. Glasson envisions the trimaran to be built of lightweight aluminum, with a 5,000-nautical-mile range. Captain Kirk would be impressed.

Concept Superyachts Pegasus

Jozeph Forakis, ‘Pegasus’

Until now, arguably the ultimate stealth boat was the one in the 1997 James Bond romp  Tomorrow Never Dies , owned by tyrannical media mogul Elliot Carver. That would change if the 289-foot concept  Pegasus , from the computer screen of N.Y.C.-born and now Milan-based designer Jozeph Forakis, gets a production go-ahead. It features a superstructure comprising three over-lapping “wings” with metallic surfaces designed to reflect the sky and the clouds, rendering the superyacht near-invisible. The “wings” also do double duty as solar panels generating energy that would be used to convert sea water to hydrogen. Fuel cells would then turn the hydrogen into electricity that would be then stored in banks of lithium-ion batteries, making Pegasus essentially emissions-free with a virtually infinite cruising range.

Superyacht Concepts Plectrum

Lazzarini, ‘Plectrum’

Why fly through the water when you can fly on top? That’s the thinking behind Rome-based Lazzarini Design’s radical 243-foot hydrofoiling superyacht concept named  Plectrum . Massive foils deploy from the sides of the yacht’s rounded carbon-fiber hull, while a trio of 5,000 hp engines would elevate the yacht out of the water and punch it to a top speed of over 80 mph. It’s a similar concept used in the latest America’s Cup AC75 foiling monohull sailboats, along with a crop of electric powerboats and surfboards. Applying the technology to a 243-foot superyacht is what’s new and possibly technically impossible, at least for now. Other stand-out features of this bright-orange flyer include a helicopter garage beneath the mile-long foredeck and a garage for your supercar at the stern.

Superyacht concepts Phantom Vesper

Phantom and Golden Yachts, ‘Vesper’

When it comes to next-generation superyacht design, it seems glass is fast becoming the new steel. Take the collaboration between the design team at Holland’s Phantom Studios and Athens-based superyacht builder Golden Yachts. The 213-foot concept they’re calling  Vesper  features five levels of floor-to-ceiling structural glass, a glass floor in the yacht’s upper deck lounge, and a glass-sided swimming pool. Connecting the beach club to the pool is a huge, high-lifting hatch that’s, what else, all glass. Now head to the owner’s “suite”—it’s more like a two-level penthouse in a Miami skyscraper—and it features floor-to-very-high-ceiling glass that floods the space with light. To catch some real rays, the full-deck suite features not one, but two outdoor terraces.

Superyacht Concepts DeBasto MED

DeBasto Design, MED

Think of this as a 301-foot dayboat with the emphasis on outdoor, alfresco, lounge-in-the-sun, Mediterranean living. From the drawing board of Miami-based designer Luiz de Basto, Project MED features uninterrupted, bow-to-stern open teak decks topped with a huge upper superstructure supported by just four columns. And to ensure the superstructure doesn’t dominate the superyacht’s sleek lines, de Basto covered it in reflective glass so that it almost disappears from view by mirroring its surroundings. The designer says his inspiration came from the idea of “Agora,” named after the squares in Ancient Greek villages where everyone congregated. Aboard Project MED, that could be on the main deck, around the oversized pool at the stern, or on the vast open foredeck.

Superyacht Concepts UAE One

Enzo Manca, ‘UAE One’

There are superyachts designed to look like military warships. Some even are shaped to look like navy submarines. But here’s a first; a superyacht inspired by the lines of an aircraft carrier. The 459-foot  UAE One  is from the fertile mind of Milan-based designer Enzo Manca who created the concept for an unnamed United Arab Emirates sheikh looking to create an official UAE flagship. Without a doubt, the design highlight is the yacht’s runway-like main deck. It features not one, but three helipads, a conning tower-like, four-level structure on the starboard side, a geometric-shaped pool and a huge circular “conversation pit” right on the bow, complete with cozy sofas and a firepit. Accommodations over nine decks include five “super suites”, eight master cabins, 14 mini apartments, and 35 cabins for the crew of 65.

Horizon Premier 130

  • By Chris Caswell
  • Updated: September 14, 2009

premier superyacht

The terms “men’s club” and “gentleman’s club” have fallen into disrepute. Most any person who hears them today immediately thinks of a dimly lit bar reeking of stale beer and filled with bearded truckers watching a barely dressed woman writhe around a pole. Sad.

My first introduction to a gentleman’s club was when I was sent by Yachting decades ago on an errand to London to watch the workings as some of the wisest men in the sailing world gathered to administer the sport. It was held in a private gentleman’s club on a lane known only to London cabbies and it was, well, quite wonderful.

The images I retain are of dark walls with intricate paneling, marked by impeccably framed sporting prints from a lost Empire. Of comfortable, deep leather chairs with a patina from a century of men wearing morning coats. Of the faintest aroma of fine cigars and even better brandies. This was where corporations were born and continents conquered.

With my first steps aboard After You , the horizon Premier 130 trideck, I was immediately transported back to that London club, and it was even more wonderful than I remembered, because this is a gentleman’s club that can carry you to the farthest reaches of an empire in grand style.

The salon sets the tone for After You , with sapele pommele finished in a dark-stained satin lacquer for the club look. Sapele is an African hardwood much like mahogany but, in this case, the pommele (a French word meaning “dappled”) appellation indicates a wonderful grain that a wood expert once likened to “champagne bubbles rising.” Set off with raised paneling, intricate crown moldings, baseboards, and tasteful curtains tied off with black silk, the effect is at once elegant and inviting.

premier superyacht

Underfoot, the planked-rosewood sole complements the look and, with more than 7 ½ feet of headroom, the salon seems immense. One reason for this is because the engine exhausts were moved to eliminate the usual intrusions on each side of the salon. Delineated by an area rug, the lounge has an immense rolled-arm leather settee and matching chair with ottoman, and you almost expect to see Ernest Hemingway (or Dr. Livingstone) enjoying them. Opposite is a black granite bar with a sunken serving area finished in marble and, in addition to the expected ice maker and fridge, the bar features a wine chiller large enough for two cases of wine.

The dining area fills the forward salon with a round table for 10, notable for its inlaid and backlit onyx center, all perfectly positioned under a circular overhead treatment with triple waterfall relief and a chandelier. The granite sole provides scuff protection (and easy cleaning) that continues the round theme, and china cabinets set the area apart. A round dining table creates informality: all guests can converse with each other-appropriate for the “clubby” theme.

Interestingly enough, the galley, which is just forward on the port side, is also finished in the same sapele, as well as acres of gleaming stainless steel on the counters, cabinets, and appliances. Anyone with the faintest gourmet pretensions would swoon to have such a food-preparation space in their home, highlighted by a full walk-in (not reach-in) freezer and a six-burner gas stove with oven. A settee is to port with a granite-topped table, ostensibly for the off-watch crew to hang out or grab snacks. I wouldn’t be surprised, however, to find guests wandering in to watch the chef at work. It might even lead to cooking demonstrations: the galley as theater.

premier superyacht

Thoughtfully designed from the crew’s standpoint, the galley has a well-equipped butler’s prep station that separates it from the guests. Equally thoughtful are doors from both the foyer and the port deck so groceries can move directly from boarding ladder to galley.

The foyer is a lovely way to enter the yacht from dockside, with a chocolate-colored Emperador marble sole perfectly aligned so the veining matches up. and it’s hard to take your eyes off the delicate handmade iron and bronze banister.

The master stateroom fills the forward portion of the main deck, starting with a double-door arched entry through a study with a large desk and settee. Another arched door opens to the masculine suite, with a king berth amidships, granite-topped bureaus to port and starboard, a vanity tucked in the forward corner, and a spacious walk-in closet. Twin doors lead to the his-and-hers heads, which are separated by a most unusual space. Dividing such a head arrangement with a shower and tub isn’t news, but this large compartment is completely paved with smooth river rocks, including up the side of the tub. This unexpected Flintstones décor is, well, startling.

premier superyacht

Off the lower foyer, a discreet door hides a full pantry with fridge, freezer, and sink, plus a stacked washer/dryer. Mirrored staterooms are to port and starboard: two with angled queen-sized berths and two with twins. Each has an en suite head with shower, cedar-lined hanging lockers, and large bronze ports. At the end of the hall is the VIP stateroom with a king berth on a platform, a desk/vanity, a walkin closet, and a marble-lined head with shower and spa tub.

While many designers place the crew quarters forward and sandwich the guest cabins between crew and engineroom, Horizon and designer J.C. Espinosa were able to create five cabins on the lower deck with truly generous space by putting the crew aft. It’s a smart layout that permits gracious staterooms with oversized heads and showers.

The skylounge, entered through arched double doors like the master suite, carries on the gentleman’s club theme, albeit on a lighter note. It’s actually a very clever transition that draws from a brighter palette than the salon below. The sole is similarly planked, but this time in a lighter mahogany, and the bulkheads with their raised panel details are the same. This works well because the large windows let in considerable light and the result is one of airiness. If the skylounge seems larger than the salon, that’s because it is: Spanning the full beam, it extends over the walkaround side decks and this also increases the size of the sundeck above.

A day-head is tucked immediately inside the skylounge, and the forward bulkhead is devoted to a very large television. A game table and stools are to port, and a long bar is aft by the twin sliding doors. The serving side is sunken and features a large wine cooler under the marble counter, which is almost white in keeping with the lighter theme.

The sitting area is accented by an area rug, but the couch-cumchaise is tropical in theme, with a rattan coffee table and casual chair. Just outside is a shaded and teak-planked deck, with a small table and four casual chairs served from a portside mini-galley. A cleverly hinged 32-inch Sharp Aquos LCD TV drops down from the overhead, and a large freezer is to port. Abaft the cocktail table is a bench seat that backs up on a truly immense sunpad that starts at the end of the bridge overhang.

The pilothouse reflects Horizon’s experience in large yachts, and the seamanlike simplicity should please the pickiest captain. The four main Nauticomp monitors are grouped amidships by the wheel, with large chart areas at each end of the helm console. Extra-wide chart drawers on both sides store full-sized charts flat, and there are provisions for handheld walkie-talkie chargers and laptop connections. Just behind the helm is a comfy settee with table, and dogging doors on each side lead to the Portuguese bridge.

Just abaft the pilothouse on the port side is the captain’s cabin, with a ship’s office and desk in the short passageway. The captain gets a queen berth, two hanging lockers, and stowage under the berth, plus an en suite head with a large shower and marble counters.

The top layer of this yacht/cake is the sundeck, where an oversized Jacuzzi spa is set abaft the combined electronics arch/hardtop. The two supports for the arch conceal an enclosed head on the starboard side and a wood-lined sauna to port with a rain shower just outside.

Forward, a very large dinette is to port and a curved bar with barbecue grill has five permanent stools. Behind the Jacuzzi is room for an 18-foot tender to be chocked or, in its absence, a large area for sunlounges. A 3,000-pound Steelhead davit handles launching on either side.

When it comes to the construction and mechanical side, the Horizon Premier 130 is most impressive. Horizon says the 130 hull is created with the largest “one-shot” resin infusion molding ever used to date. The entire hull, including the sandwiched coring, the longitudinal engine beds, and the thwartships stiffeners, was created in one piece, thus insuring an extremely strong but light hull that would have none of the flaws that can occur with multiple infusions. The yacht is built to the rigorous Det Norske Veritas (DNV) classification as well as MCA LY2, the updated MCA regulations for large yachts.

While the lines and layout came from Florida-based J.C. Espinosa, the systems were engineered by Greg Marshall. The engineroom is quite impressive, from the entirely hard-piped plumbing (including hydraulics) to the walkaround accessibility of both the mains and the gensets.

Power for After You is a pair of 1,825-horsepower Caterpillar C32 diesels that give the yacht a cruising speed of 14 knots at just 55-percent engine output and, at 11 knots, the yacht has a 3,300 nm range. The electrical side is equally well managed, starting with a pair of 65 kW Onan generators with parallel operation. Seamless power transfer comes from two 75 kVA Sea Power converters.

The crew area is finished to the same high standards as the guest areas, starting with a pleasant crew mess with sapele paneling, an L-settee and table facing a TV, a compact galley with stove, sink, and fridge, and another stacked washer and dryer. The engineer gets his own cabin with a queen berth, there are two more crew cabins with criss-cross bunks, and the heads have large showers. The crew have private access to their quarters from a door on the side deck.

With the entire Premier 130 series of tridecks, and certainly with After You , Horizon Yachts has served notice on the yachting community that they are a major player in the large-yacht market and, with yachts as large as 163 feet already in the works, Horizon is a must-see. Membership in this club has its privileges.

Inside the Maldives’ first superyacht marina, the newest playground of the super rich

Y ou’d be forgiven for assuming the Maldives, a country that is 99 per cent water and a playground for the uber wealthy, comfortably caters for the yachting elite. The archipelago’s 172 luxury resorts, many of which are built on private islands, offer every conceivable amenity, from sublime underwater spas to incongruous snow rooms. Yet a purpose-built superyacht marina is a glaring omission from the list, an anomaly that Atoll Estates is looking to change.

The UAE-based company has revealed plans for a five-star development set within 500 hectares of a natural lagoon in the South Malé Atoll. Located just 21 miles from Malé International airport (which completes a large expansion in 2025 to cater for the estimated 4.3 million travellers passing through each year), Zamani Islands will comprise three individual resorts spread across eight islands. Designed in partnership with Dubai-based architects Killa Design, it promises to host the island chain’s first dedicated superyacht marina.

“By providing state-of-the-art facilities for superyachts , the marina will attract more high-net-worth individuals and yachting enthusiasts to the region,” says Amit Majumder, co-founder and managing partner of Atoll Estates, who believes the influx will boost local tourism. “The increased yachting traffic will foster the development of related services and infrastructure, further establishing the Maldives as a premier yachting destination on the global stage.”

The initial phase of the development, set to open in 2026, will include the first of three distinct resorts made up of a collection of private residences, each with a private pier for yacht tenders. Lifelong berthing at the marina (once complete) will also be included. The second “multi-experiential” resort is aimed at families and couples with a private island beach club for over 21s, while the third “lifestyle” resort will have a total of 300 keys, a yacht and sailing club and the largest events and entertainment venue in the country.

Spanning a whopping 60,000 square metres, Zamani Islands marina’s full-service facilities are pitched to include crew amenities, provisioning, maintenance and access to a yacht club. Of the 120 yacht berths, 60 will be dedicated to superyachts upwards of 30m in length, with a single dockside mooring of up to 200m. Other resort amenities include the first medical spa in the country (though Soneva’s two wellness complexes may have pipped them to the post), personal butler service, and 28 food and beverage venues, including an underwater restaurant.

It’s no secret that the Maldives’ wide-open waters, vibrant coral reefs and diving hot spots make it a yachting haven. Around 70 to 100 large motor and sailing yachts arrive in Maldivian waters each year (per 2021-2023 Maldivian Coast Guard cruising permit applications). The country’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean also makes it a convenient stopover for yachts travelling between the Middle East, southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. According to tracking data compiled by Bloomberg, the Maldives saw more visiting yachts than Hong Kong and Singapore combined in 2023, slightly outpacing Thailand. So why has there not been a superyacht marina in the pipeline before now?

“For the past 20 years, the Maldives’ private resort tourism model has proven highly profitable and pretty low risk,” says Splinter Fangman, a yacht and berth broker at Edmiston. “With a superyacht marina, it’s still a gamble whether the yachts will actually use it.”

For vessels upwards of 70m that can sustain themselves at anchor for weeks at a time, the Maldives’ current lack of infrastructure isn’t an issue. Yachts like 134m Serene and 97m Faith are self-sufficient floating resorts equipped with their own high-end amenities, even the aforementioned snow room. Provisioning and fuel bunkering is done ship to ship using a large barge that caters for private island resorts. Though the opportunity to dock at a marina to use shore power, turn off systems and generators, and allow the crew to go ashore is appealing, it’s not a requisite, says Fangman, especially for owners who prize privacy above all else.

For smaller yachts that depend on the services of a marina, making the crossing to the Indian Ocean can be challenging. That said, the Maldives is well placed to capture substantial traffic in the burgeoning Asia-Pacific yachts, while vessels based in the Middle East regard it as an attractive alternative to the crowded anchorages of the Caribbean.

“A marina in the Maldives will pull through huge numbers of yachts from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf,” says Donovan Chong, an independent marina entrepreneur. He cites the 146m Lürssen-built Opera, owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, which typically berths in Dubai, as a frequent visitor to the Maldivian archipelago.

Demand for a marina that caters to the super rich is now a strategic focus for the Maldives, adds Chong, who notes there are several additional imminent marina projects in the pipeline. “The Maldivian government has made it a top priority to explore new tourism verticals beyond hotels and resorts and to establish the Maldives as the ‘eastern terminus’ of the yachting world.”

He believes a dedicated marina will unlock the untapped potential of the Maldives as a charter (yacht rental) hot spot, and that future resorts need to be built around the marina, rather than treating it as an amenity. Majumder agrees. “Zamani Islands is more than just a residence; it is a lifestyle — one that seamlessly blends the opulence of land and sea, providing a haven for those who appreciate the finer things in life.” In other words, build it and the yachts will come.

Princess to premier 30m superyacht at Southampton Boat Show

Princess Yachts plans to unveil its new 98 Motor Yacht, showcasing the company’s interior design credentials, at the Southampton Boat Show in September.

The sleek 30 metre long-range cruising yacht is intended specifically for elegant entertaining, and the interior was designed in collaboration with Fendi Casa, which along with Princess is part of the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) group.

‘From furniture to floor coverings, fabrics to soft furnishings the entire interior across both decks present a perfect showcase of this unique partnership Princess has with some of the world's most prestigious brands,’ says Simon Clare, head of marketing at Princess Yachts.

‘This is a design service available to all our Motor Yacht and M Class owners and in fact the company is now working on two more Fendi interiors for owners of a 32M and an 85 Motor Yacht.’

The layout also helps make the yacht, which has a 7 metre beam, convenient for entertaining. The main deck incorporates a walk-through bow and seating area – an alternative socialising area when moored stern-to. For water sports there is an electro-hydraulic bathing platform for the launch and recovery of a tender or jet ski, or simply for use as a submerged swimming or diving platform.

The large transom garage can accommodate a jet ski, which can be lifted using the flybridge crane. The flybridge can be specified with an optional hardtop with integrated sunroof, which also allows the crane to be stowed fore or aft, freeing up the aft deck as additional entertaining space.

Accommodation can be configured for eight or 10 guests, with up to six crew in separate quarters with a wide choice of configurations.

Draught is 1.83 metres Princess offers a choice of four engine packages. These range from twin 1,925mhp Caterpillar C32 Acerts with top speeds of 20-22 knots, to twin 2,637mhp MTU 16V 2000 M94s with top speeds of 27-29 knots.

The Southampton Boat Show runs 16-25 September and the 98 Motor Yacht will be at the Princess stand E56 / berths M491–M502.

Italian divers search for superyacht wreck survivors as ‘air pockets’ could offer hope

Italian divers searched for a third day on Wednesday, 21 August, for six people rescuers fear are trapped inside the luxury Bayesian superyacht that sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily .

Those missing include British billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah; Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer ; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

One man, Recaldo Thomas, has been confirmed dead, and a further 15 people survived the incident.

Coastguard officials have not ruled out the possibility that those missing may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank.

Yacht expert breaks down luxury superyacht tragedy after boat capsizes in freak storm: 'Always limits'

A luxury superyacht like the Bayesian , which capsized and sank early Monday with more than a dozen people on board, is typically built to withstand extreme weather conditions, but not everything is 100% guaranteed, says one expert.

Fox News Digital spoke with eSysman of the YouTube channel eSysman SuperYachts , to find out what could have gone wrong with the vessel.

The host, who identifies publicly as eSysman, told Fox News Digital that a high-caliber yacht like the Bayesian, should typically be able to withstand up to "extreme weather conditions," but qualified that "there are always limits."

"Obviously, any voyage plan will take into account the weather. Wind, wave sizes, and frequencies of the waves will be studied and precise prediction of weather has improved over the years, but it’s still not 100%," eSysman said, noting that it is ultimately the captain who is responsible for the vessel.

WHO IS MIKE LYNCH, THE BRITISH TECH ENTREPRENEUR MISSING AFTER YACHT SANK?

The Bayesian was notable for its single 246-foot mast — one of the world's tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros – or around about $215,000 – a week.

Sicily's civil protection agency said that a tornado over the water known as a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, authorities said.

Lynch's wife and 14 other people survived. Lynch was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off the Italian city of Porticello, near Palermo, sometime after 4 a.m.

"There’s always the possibility of survivors. This is why the search and rescue will keep going, no matter how slim the chances are," eSysman said. "But life expectancy in cold water is short."

If a vessel is caught in high-winds, eSysman, [they] will start their engines, and maneuver into a position where the wind is on the bow, avoiding the beam or the side of the vessel from being against the wind.

"We’re not sure if the yacht was at anchor or was sailing. The eyewitness report seems to suggest the vessel was anchored in the bay, but the AIS data's lost position said she was underway, so we're not sure which is correct," eSysman said.

"AIS" refers to "Automatic Identification System," which is a short-range coastal tracking system used on ships.

Per its YouTube channel, the team at eSysman SuperYachts comprises all serving or ex-maritime professions, with eSysman himself having more than two decades in the industry working on various SuperYachts of all sizes "including some of the largest in the world."

The crew and passengers of the Bayesian hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families."

Built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, the yacht can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

Bodies of Autonomy founder Mike Lynch and his daughter recovered from sunken Bayesian yacht

Mike Lynch, the U.K. investor and founder of IT company Autonomy, has been identified as one of two bodies recovered from the Bayesian, the yacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily early Monday, according to several reports coming out of the country that cite the chief of Civil Protection, Salvo Cocina. The boat, registered to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, quickly capsized in the early hours of Monday after it was struck by a tornado-like water column. In a tragic coincidence, Chamberlain was hit by a car last Saturday and died of his wounds earlier this week.

MAN OF STEEL Yacht – Premier $150 M Superyacht

Measuring 86 meters, she is one of the world’s largest yachts.

MAN OF STEEL yacht interior

The interior of the MAN OF STEEL yacht includes a fully equipped gym, a spa, a beach club, a movie theatre, a beauty salon, a dance floor, and of course, a glass elevator that connects the different levels of the yacht.

The gym is arguably one of the most impressive parts of this superyacht as it has floor-to-ceiling windows providing great views from one of the upper decks of the vessel.

This allows guests to have a beautiful view of not only the pool below but also the breathtaking scenery this yacht might pass when underway.

The private owners’ deck offers a fantastic state-of-the-art master bedroom with its own dressing room as well as an attached office or study. This suite includes its own private deck area with a sizable jacuzzi perfect for relaxing and drinking a glass of wine under starry skies.

The six additional luxurious suites can accommodate 12 additional guests allowing the MAN OF STEEL to welcome up to 14 guests in total who are tended to by 23 crew members. The MAN OF STEEL interior was designed by Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen and is equipped with exquisite furniture made of walnut, teak, and rosewood, accented with natural materials and fabrics.

The design of the yacht interior is simple yet classy, with clean and minimalist spaces. Wooden furnishings can be found in all parts of the vessel, although the interior is not as opulently furnished and decorated as other superyachts in its price category.

Nuvolari & Lenard is a renowned design duo that specializes in traditional yacht design for vessels between 25 and 185 meters in length. Their aim is to redefine beauty while keeping classical elements in mind.

In collaboration with the American interior designer Molly Isaksen, they created a one-of-a-kind fusion of naval architecture, incorporating contemporary and traditional elements in the interior of this beautiful vessel. The MAN OF STEEL offers a 250 square feet semi-covered sundeck, which is located adjacent to the main salon that provides enough space for larger events and celebrations aboard the vessel. A crew of 23 members of staff offers an excellent 5-star service and fulfills every possible wish of the guests onboard the MAN OF STEEL superyacht.

With excellent fine dining capabilities and luxurious amenities, this yacht is ideal for private ownership as well as high-end charter service.

Yacht specifications

The MAN OF STEEL has a length of 86 meters (282.15 ft) with a beam of 14.2 meters (46.6 ft) and a draft of 3.91 meters (13 ft).

She was built by Oceana in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands using mainly steel and aluminum which is their specialty. MAN OF STEEL was completed and delivered to Steven Spielberg in 2010. The yacht has her main port in George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands, under whose flag she sails and she has been spotted as far south as the port of Puerto Escondido . With a weight of 2.658 tons and an output of 6,984 kW (9,496 hp), the MAN OF STEEL can reach top speeds of 20 knots.

Her maximum range lies at 4,750 nautical miles, which is respectable considering her size.

Yacht exterior

Designed by Azure Naval Architects and styled by Nuvolari & Lenard, the MAN OF STEEL yacht combines exceptional craftsmanship with unique outlines. The hull of the ship is set in an elegant dark blue, while the upper decks were left in the traditional brilliant white that many yachts bear. On the aft deck, you will find an impressive infinity pool with an incredible 4.6 meter (15 ft) glass wall, which doubles as a movie screen if required. The aft has another slightly smaller pool as well as a sizable deck with comfortable seating. This deck can be used as a helipad for smaller aircraft allowing guests to arrive in style. When this area isn’t needed for landing purposes, it can be covered completely by large awnings providing additional shade to guests.

Toys and equipment

A yacht this size naturally comes with lots of toys and equipment to entertain the guests onboard.

The MAN OF STEEL carries four jet skis, several sea bobs, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling equipment, and much more.

The two tenders onboard the vessel are always ready to take the guests to the mainland or to the nearest secluded beach.

Spielberg purchased them from Hodgdon Yachts, a shipyard based in Maine in the United States after MAN OF STEEL was delivered in 2010.

The larger of the two tenders, the Limo, has space for twelve people with luxurious leather upholstery, flatscreen television, and air conditioning.

When the weather is nice, the roof of the tender can be lifted and opened using hydraulics.

Additional information

In 2013 MAN OF STEEL was overhauled and refitted by Amico & Co, a well-known superyacht repair and design company.

The shipyard is based in Genoa, Italy, and has a 60,000 m² dock and operating area where work on both smaller and larger vessels can be carried out.

Clifford Chance partner among those missing in loss of Mike Lynch yacht Bayesian

By Michael Cross 2024-08-20T10:26:00+01:00

The Clifford Chance partner who acted for UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch in defeating US fraud charges earlier this summer is missing along with his client following the sinking of the sailing yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily yesterday. According to the magic circle firm, Christopher J Morvillo, a former assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York, specialises in representing corporate and individual clients in white-collar government investigations.

In June this year, Lynch was cleared by a federal jury in California of criminal charges relating to the $11bn sale of his software startup Autonomy to US-based Hewlett-Packard. His acquittal of US criminal charges followed an English High Court ruling in 2022 that Lynch and another Autonomy executive had fraudulently inflated the company’s revenue ahead of the acquisition.

Bayesian sank yesterday morning while at anchor off the coast of Sicily. Of the 22 people on board, 15 were rescued. They are reported to include Clifford Chance associate Ayla Ronald. One body has so far been found while six people are missing.

Bayesian sank at anchor yesterday morning

Morvillo, who became a Clifford Chance partner in 2011, had a high-profile role in prosecutions and investigations, including those arising from the 11 September attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. He led the legal team which succeeded in clearing Lynch of securities and wire fraud. On the witness stand in California, Lynch denied the allegations against him, asserting that the US$8.8 billion write-down HP took the year after the Autonomy acquisition was the company’s own fault.

Following the acquittal, Morvillo said: 'We are thrilled with the jury’s verdict, which reflects a resounding rejection of the government’s profound overreach in this case. The evidence presented at trial demonstrated conclusively that Mike Lynch is innocent. This verdict closes the book on a relentless 13-year effort to pin HP’s well-documented ineptitude on Dr Lynch. Thankfully, the truth has finally prevailed. We thank Dr Lynch for his trust throughout this ordeal and hope that he can now return home to England to resume his life and continue innovating.’

A Clifford Chance spokesperson said: 'We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with our partner, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda who are among the missing. Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident. Our thoughts extend to the other passengers and crew and all those affected. We have no further comment at this time. We, and the families, ask that their request for privacy is honored during this period.'

Irish-born Lynch has been a key figure in the AI sector. Among the ventures in which he has invested is the UK-based legal AI pioneer Luminance, whose software is used by 700 organisations worldwide including one quarter of the top-100 law firms.

PORTICELLO, Sicily — (AP) — British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy's civil protection and authorities said. Lynch's wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, near Palermo, sometime after 4 a.m. A tornado over the water known as a waterspout had struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

The ship had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and a waterspout struck precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another big ship nearby, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue the 15 survivors — including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Fabio Cefalù said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on-site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP's 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The fraud accusations represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

Winfield reported from Rome. AP writers Danica Kirka and Sylvia Hui contributed from London.

This story has been corrected to reflect that the fisherman's name is Fabio Cefalù, not Francesco Cefalu’.

Bond-loving Mike Lynch planned ‘second life’ after ‘saying goodbye to everything’ in 10-year battle before party tragedy

  • Josh Saunders , Features Writer
  • Published : 9:27 ET, Aug 20 2024

JUST a month ago, Mike Lynch gleefully spoke about making up for lost time and his “second life” after defying microscopic 0.5 per cent odds that he wouldn't spend the rest of his life in prison.

The tech tycoon , often branded “the British Bill Gates” , had been locked in 12 years of legal battles to clear his name over claims of fraud related to the 2011 sale of his firm Autonomy to Hewlett Packard for $11.7billion.

Mike Lynch with wife Angela, who was rescued after the yacht sank

Prosecutors had claimed Mike and his financial director Shushovan Hussain had “used every accounting trick in the book” to overinflate the value of his business by $5billion in Silicon Valley’s biggest-ever fraud trial.

The 59-year-old had been living under house arrest in San Francisco, US, with just his beloved dog Faucet for company, for well over a year when he was finally acquitted two months ago and spoke about longing to spend time with his wife, Angela Bacares and their two daughters.

If found guilty, he would have been sentenced to 25 years in prison but said he would not have survived due to his age and various health conditions. He was given a 0.5 per cent chance of winning the trial.

To celebrate Mike’s against-the-odds victory, he chartered the £14million superyacht Bayesian owned by him and his wife to sail around the Italian island of Sicily with his family and those close to him - but tragedy struck .

Twisted life of Perry 'Ketamine Queen' from chilling death query to $2k hotels

In the early hours of Monday morning, the 56metre vessel sank off the coast of village Porticello during a storm when a waterspout - similar to a tornado - broke the mast and capsized the boat.

Authorities managed to rescue 15 people including Mike’s wife Angela - but the software tycoon, his daughter Hannah, 18, and four others remain missing.

The Bayesian has been found 50 metres underwater on the sea bed, with search and rescue teams unable to reach rooms due to furniture blocking passageways.

In a short statement, captain of the yacht James Catfield told La Repubblica: “We didn't see it coming.”

Tributes have started to pour in for those aboard the ship - including Mike, who rose from a lowly hospital cleaner to being named the UK’s most influential person in IT.

The tycoon, worth an estimated £852million, was born in the Republic of Ireland in 1965 before moving to Chelmsford, Essex, with his firefighter dad and nurse mum.

His first job was as a hospital cleaner, with him telling The Times: “I’m still a demon mopper. There’s an art form to it, you know.”

But it was his analytical skills that led him to become one of Britain’s respected minds - including in 2011 becoming Prime Minister David Cameron’s science and technology advisor.

Early on, Mike earned a scholarship to private school Bancroft’s, which today charges £8,330 per term, and later a place at Christ’s College, Cambridge University.

He studied physics, mathematics and biochemistry and after graduated with a PhD in artificial neural networks - a type of machine learning - and his doctoral thesis is said to be one of the most widely read pieces in the university library.

Rescue personnel tirelessly worked off the coast of Porticello, near Palermo, in Sicily

'Late nights & cold pizza'

Mike was involved in a number of start-ups in the Eighties before founding Autonomy, which made him from $516million for his eight per cent ownership stake when it sold in 2011.

The former firms included Lynett Systems Ltd, which created audio products and designs for electronic synethesizer keyboards, after he negotiated a £2,000 loan in a bar. Another was a software used by police that focused on number plate, fingerprint and facial recognition.

In 1996, software company Autonomy was born, which would be used to analyse huge swathes of data from unstructured sources like phone calls, emails and videos.

Describing his small team he said: “Eccentric people working really hard on a project. No bureaucracy. No admin. Lots of late nights, lots of eating cold pizza”.

Autonomy became an instant success and benefitted from the dotcom boom, which led it to join the FTSE 100 of top UK listed companies.

The achievements with Mike, the chief executive officer, at the helm led to considerable praise including receiving an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.

'Bond obsessive'

While building his empire, Mike admitted to being “hard-charging” and was described as “blunt and dictatorial” by critics - but he had a lighter, kooky side.

A James Bond obsessive, he named conference rooms after 007 villains, including Dr No and Goldfinger, and even had a piranha tank in the company’s atrium, in a nod to You Only Live Twice. He also drove an Aston Martin DB5, like the fictional spy.

I’d had to say goodbye to everything and everyone, because I didn’t know if I’d ever be coming back. Mike Lynch

Others compared him to a Mafia boss - and to jokingly lean into that in 2005, he released a corporate video where he dubbed himself ‘Big Mike’ and wore a mob-style fedora as one of his ‘associates’ smashed a phone with a baseball bat.

This didn’t detract from Autonomy’s success - they had 2,000 employees in 20 countries and their software was used by the likes of US phone company AT&T, global bank BNP Paribas and US firm BlackRock.

By 2010, they were able to fork out £20million on a sponsorship deal with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and one year later, Hewlett Packard (HP) came knocking.

'Every trick in the book'

They were reportedly so desperate for the firm they paid $11.7billion for the firm - 64 per cent over the company’s stock market value.

Mike said: “One of the great mythologies was that I had a choice to sell, it would have been like trying to stop a herd of elephants.”

The buyout was seen as a way to save HP, which was struggling financially at the time, but within five weeks of the takeover, shares in the company tanked.

premier superyacht

HP chief executive Leo Apotheker, who brokered the deal, was jettisoned and replaced by Meg Whitman, a tech whizz who had recently lost her bid to become California governor at a cost of $140million of her own money.

Mike was fired alongside 27,000 HP workers and other with the vision to make it a success.

HP announced an $8.8billion writedown - admitting they had paid four times the amount Autonomy was worth and later alleged “serious accounting improprieties”.

They alleged Mike and his team had deliberately inflated the value of the company by $5billion with fake sales and financially dishonesty - what would ensue was 12 years of high-profile court battles.

His daughters were just nine and six when their dad was labelled a fraudster.

“I remember early on sitting them down and the analogy I gave my six-year-old was that Daddy had sold someone a plant. They hadn’t watered it, it had died, and they were trying to blame Daddy for this,” he told The Times.

“There was a long period when they thought I would somehow fix this, but the nearer we got to the date, the more they understood that this was a battle."

In 2015, the UK’s Serious Fraud Office dropped the case due to a lack of evidence but across the pond, a storm was brewing that would lead to the largest fraud trial in Silicon Valley history.

Facing 17 charges of conspiracy, securities fraud and wire fraud, later reduced to 15, Mike was extradited to the US in March last year after being arrested outside his sprawling Chelsea home.

Who are the six still missing from the Bayesian yacht tragedy?

By Ellie Doughty, Foreign News Reporter

THE BAYESIAN superyacht was hosting a lavish party for 12 guests, with 10 crew also onboard.

After 15 people were rescued from the water on Monday, six people remain missing and one has been found dead.

Italian authorities said the man recovered near the yacht wreckage was the chef working onboard.

Four of the missing are British and two are American.

Mike Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, are among the four Brits lost at sea.

International chairman of bank giant Morgan Stanley, Brit Jonathan Bloomer, 70, is also missing along with his wife Judy.

As is top New York lawyer Chris Morvillo, a solicitor at major firm Clifford Chance who worked for Mike Lynch, and his wife Neda

“It has to be wrong that a US prosecutor has more power over a British citizen living in England than the UK police do,” he said at the time.

Extradited in chains

At London Heathrow, Mike was put in shackles by US Marshals which weren’t taken off until he reached the home he would spent the next 13 months inside under 24-hour surveillance, wearing an ankle tag and having surrendered his passport and $100million bond.

Mike said: “It’s ridiculous. You’re in chains, even though, like, what are you going to do? As you can see, I’m not exactly an Olympic boxing champion.”

He faced 25 years in prison if found guilty and believed he was likely to die if incarcerated due to suffering “various medical things that would have made it very difficult to survive” including a serious lung condition.

“I’d had to say goodbye to everything and everyone, because I didn’t know if I’d ever be coming back,” Mike reflected after his release.

“If this had gone the wrong way, it would have been the end of life as I have known it in any sense.”

Mike Lynch is married to wife Angela Bacares and had two kids Hannah, 18, and a 21-year-old daughter

The cases took a toll on his family too. Mike’s brother while he was under house arrest, meaning he was unable to attend the funeral, and his mum also died before he was cleared.

0.5% chance of victory

Mike remained laser focussed on winning his case choosing to “never watch anything with prisons in it” in the face of damning chances of him being exonerated.

It’s estimated just 0.5 per cent of all federal criminal cases in the US end in the defendant being cleared - despite this Mike would go on to win.

A few things worked in his favour including the trial being so ‘boring’ and detail-heavy - filled with emails, reports and jargon-laden spreadsheets - that jurors were left glassy-eyed and one was dismissed due to falling asleep multiple times.

Another was Mike’s former finance director Sushovan Hussain having already been found guilty for the same alleged crime, which meant his prosecutors knew what would be used in the case against him.

Prosecutors were also said to have failed to go “right for the jugular” when Mike was called as a final witness on the stand and instead asked “no probing questions”, instead reviewing the “chronology of documents”.

It’s ridiculous. You’re in chains, even though, like, what are you going to do? As you can see, I’m not exactly an Olympic boxing champion. Mike Lynch

When Mike was found not guilty, he said the moment as “indescribable” and later in a text said it was “so wonderful” to be home with his wife and daughters, 21 and 18.

Mike said: “If this had gone the wrong way, it would have been the end of my life as I have known it in any sense.

“It's bizarre, but now you have a second life - the question is, what do you want to do with it?”

'St Peter's questions'

Mike couldn't wait to return to the UK - where he has a luxurious home in Chelsea, London, and sprawling 16th Century home Loudham Hall, in Pettistree, Suffolk, that cost £6million.

At the latter, he and wife Angela - who has kept out of the public spotlight - threw a garden party to celebrate that included prominent business people and politicians including former deputy prime minister Therese Coffey and Tory peer Lord Deben.

The acquittal heralded a change in how he interpreted his life – and through tears, he told The Times he had “a different mindset” due to the “very strange situation” he had been through.

The Bayesian off Porticello, Palermo, in Italy, at night

He said: “I stood on Piccadilly Circus the other day, which has the most enormous permanent traffic jam, and I’m just thinking, ‘This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.’”

Despite being cleared, Mike was due to write a sizeable cheque after being found to have committed fraud during a 2022 battle in London’s High Court.

HP had demanded $5billion. A judge had yet to decide how much he should pay but did note it would not be the full requested amount.

After being acquitted in the US, Mike spoke about spending more precious time with his family.

His older daughter, now 21, was studying physics at university and Hannah, 18, was due to go to Oxford this autumn.

Exhausted by his ordeal he wanted to take the family on a much-needed holiday before he worked the next big plans in his life - which would lead to the tragic yacht disaster.

The vessel is named after Bayesian inference - a statistical theory developed by 18th Century philosopher and mathematician Thomas Bayes - which helped make Mike's company Autonomy such a success.

Prior to the holiday, he said: “You don’t realise how tired you are until you stop and have a chance to be tired. It is that sort of exhaustion in your bones.”

Mike was reportedly planning to form a UK version of the Innocence Project - a US charity that works to free wrongly convicted people after thinking about his legacy - due to admitting it was only the millions he spent that guaranteed his freedom.
