This Radical New 108-Foot Superyacht Could Reshape Sport Boat Design as We Know It

Following a sneak peek at the Venice Boat Show last summer, Sanlorenzo’s SP110 will make a proper debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. The 108-footer is one of a dozen or so global launches at the first big show of the season. But the standout design is more than an also ran. It could actually reshape design for large sports yachts.

Or not. Given its radical design, it could be another specialist yacht for a handful of owners until the rest of the yachting world catches up. Sanlorenzo’s Tilli Antonelli was the lead on a team that included naval architect Marco Arnaboldi who designed the running surface, Bernardo Zuccon for the exteriors and interiors, and Piero Lissoni who completed the interior styling and decor.

Antonelli has had breakthrough designs in the past, most recently at Wider Yachts, which he founded in 2010. His Wider 42 ’s expandable midsection made the boat much, well, wider. It was years ahead of its time. Eventually the rest of the boating world caught up. Now, expandable decks are common on boats from 28 to 150 feet.

The SP stands for “Smart Performance,” which, on this boat, is more than an acronym. This SP110 is notable for its top speed of 40 knots, making it the fastest Sanlorenzo to date. But even more interesting is the power configuration: three MAN 2000 hp V-12 engines mated to jet drives. This propeller-less configuration not only lets the boat run on one engine for better fuel efficiency, but offers exceptional maneuverability and faster acceleration.

Zuccon’s exterior is also a breakthrough design. The profile actually looks low, almost squat, for a yacht its size, but this unusual superstructure actually hides a large two-deck interior that seems more like a big glass house than a yacht cabin. The rear entrances for the split-level decks are wide open, allowing excellent visibility of the stern and sea from anywhere inside, but also creating a clear link between upstairs and downstairs.

The uncluttered rear deck can be configured with loose furniture for social events or, when running, carry the tender and water toys. The bow’s alfresco dining area is a rare design that allows owners to take advantage of ocean breezes. Typically, dining areas are on the stern. These innovations will certainly make the new Sanlorenzo a standout at Cannes.

With all these big design cues, it’s almost too easy to overlook Lissoni’s interior, which suits the boat perfectly. It’s a simple design that matches the glass-house feel of the interior with some custom décor but nothing ostentatious. It works well to complete the package.

The SP110 is one of two Sanlorenzo boats debuting at Cannes this year. The other is the third model in the shipyard’s semi-displacement SD fleet, the 79-foot SD90.

Standard Sailplan

The innovative deck layout comes in two solutions for the cockpit. The owner can choose a step in the aft deck area or a completely flush deck. Both solutions mean that the area is suitable for sunbathing or just as a lounge area to sit and relax.

The innovative coachroof is beautiful yet functional with an extra-large companionway leading to the saloon to give an idea of continuity with the cockpit. Innovation isn’t only in style but also functionality, for example helm stations have been moved forward and in a higher position to enhance visibility and control of the yacht bringing the aft part of the cockpit completely free for sunbathing, relaxation and the beach club area.

Timeless Classic

The yacht is fitted with natural materials such as linen, cotton and leather in shades of white, naturally light colours, natural brown and putty tones for leather. These blend with light durmast wood, giving the yacht a sophisticated feel and bringing warm, sunny countries to mind.

TraditionalNavy

Linens and cottons in navy blue and shaded white blend with various shades of tobacco in fabric and leather. There is also the traditional wood used for sailing, namely natural teak, taking those on board back to the long-established seafaring concept of historical sailing clubs.

Natural fabrics such as linen and cotton are featured in different shades of wine, Cowes red and the fundamental shaded white. There is also “drunken” leather and Canaletto walnut, bringing to mind the Admiral’s Cup and Fastnet Race triumphs of sports sailing.

PERSHING 108’ SPORT YACHT

General Information

In order to fully understand and appreciate the extraordinary innovative force of this futuristic 108-foot yacht, it is helpful to explain the concept of “performance” as Pershing sees it: “Speed, comfort, and fuel efficiency”. And thus the design innovation represented by three engines meets not only the power requirement but also those of onboard living space and fuel savings. Not only do three engines reduce weight and make maintenance easier, but they allow transfers to be made using just the middle engine, with imperceptible noise and extraordinary range as it glides over 1,070 nautical miles at 10 knots. Running two engines, the cruising speed rises to 23 knots, which becomes 42 knots with the full power of all three engines (still accompanied by a delightful silence of between 69 and 75 dBA).

Another winning feature of the Pershing 108 is the liveability and spaciousness at the disposal of the yacht owner and his or her guests. Total volume is almost that of a 115-foot yacht (510 cubic meters versus the 535 cubic meters of a 115). Liveability obviously has everything to gain from this extra space. When the stern folding door is activated, an enormous room of 70 square meters leading to the spacious cockpit is created.

Another key feature is the natural lighting provided by the large windows that embellish the lower deck area. Like every masterpiece, the Pershing 108 is a unique and incomparable work of art thanks to the customizability of its interiors: colors, furnishings and designer pieces. The same standard layout, with four guest cabins and three crew cabins, may be customized as well. As on all Pershing boats, the onboard technology is state-of-the-art.

To fully understand and appreciate the extraordinary innovative power of this futuristic 108-foot yacht, it is helpful to understand how Pershing defines “performance”: “Speed, comfort, and fuel efficiency.” Thus, the innovation in design represented by three engines satisfies not only the need for power, but also those for living space and fuel efficiency. Not only do three engines reduce weight and make maintenance easier, but they also make it possible to make transfers using only the middle engine, with imperceptible noise and an extraordinary range of over 1,070 nautical miles at 10 knots. The cruising speed increases to 42 knots when all three engines are operating at full capacity, from 23 knots when two engines are used (still accompanied by a delightful silence of between 69 and 75 dBA). The spaciousness and livability afforded to the yacht owner and his or her guests is another advantageous feature of the Pershing 108. Comparable in volume to a 115-foot yacht (510 cubic metres versus the 535 cubic metres of a 115). Clearly, livability has everything to gain from this additional space. When the stern folding door is opened, a 70-square-meter space is created that leads to the spacious cockpit. The large windows that adorn the lower deck’s illumination are an additional feature of significance. The Pershing 108 is a one-of-a-kind, incomparable work of art due to the customizability of its interiors: colors, furnishings, and designer pieces. The standard layout, which consists of four guest cabins and three crew cabins, can also be modified. As with all Pershing vessels, the onboard technology is cutting-edge.

With features and fittings normally reserved for larger yachts, this sleek beauty forges its own set of rules. Entertainment venues and accommodations also reach a standard that other builders – and potential owners – might want to make note of. Above and below decks a broad range of activity and leisure options thrust it way above the ordinary. High performance is its aim, with a brief curtsy and without sacrificing luxury and style, this slender marvel depends upon its pioneering drive systems to reach exhilarating top speed (43 knots), plus excellent ease of handling.

Laid out as a sophisticated drawing room, with leather couches facing cocktail tables across the full beam, this model reflects the taste of its owner, and can be built to any specifications as a semi-custom yacht. From the aft sliding doors the saloon opens to its port and starboard sofa arrangement, with two low-level tables. Wide planed teak decks are handsomely arrayed with light almond-hued wool carpeting. Huge side windows offer breathless views of the surrounding sea or shore side sights. A flat-screen LCD 42” TV rises at the push of a button, with hi-fi surround-sound. The adjacent bar features full service, with an icemaker fridge, hot/cold sink, and bottle storage.

Done in subdued tones of English leather and light cherry wood over teak floors, with tan carpeting, the king-size island berth dominates the beam-wide suite. Bedside tables, a dressing table, 42” LCD flat screen TV and video recorder output hi-fi surround sound to provide for ultimate accompaniment. A leather two-seat settee, mini-fridge with glassware and stowage are lighted by overhead halogen starlights. Fixed vertical portlights furnish excellent day and evening surrounding views. Adjacent to the fine leather couch, a capacious walk-in closet and bureau provide ample hanging and stowage for day and night wear.

Sunseeker 108

Sunseeker is one of the oldest of the modern generation of British yards. They have built their reputation and their market on a combination of lifestyle, advanced technology and style. In the midst of taking motoryacht design forward they have retained some of the quintessential British elements of yacht design, the use of teak, the club-like interiors and the legendary seagoing performance. But in setting forth to build a statement yacht in the form of its new 108, Predator faced a knotty question: When you are good at what you do, how do you get even better?

The answer in Sunseeker’s case was to get rid of the outside contributions to the designs of their yachts and do it all in-house. For years Sunseeker had been loyal to its hull and interior designers and in turn they have taken this builder on a very successful path, establishing its position at the top of the tree as far as style is concerned. But all the time, Sunseeker was learning-until the realization came that perhaps they could now do a better job themselves. After all, who knows the Sunseeker ethos better than Sunseeker?

Still, it was a gamble. And it paid off, as with this newest and largest of their Predator range of performance cruisers they have shown that they can go it alone-and then some. In fact, the one word to describe this yacht when you see it for the first time is: magnificent. It seems to fill your horizons, its scale way above what you might expect on a 108-footer.

Much of this impact, I suspect, comes from the hull, which is very deep, smooth (not even a rubrail) and beautifully proportioned. The raking bow, adorned by the stainless steel anchors, speaks of performance. The oval windows and portholes seem to disappear within the navy blue section of the hull and all you see are majestic flowing lines of what indeed proves to be a seakindly hull.

The superstructure matches the hull precisely, and is a departure from the past. Gone is the crescendo of curves that used to identify the Sunseeker motoryacht. This has been replaced with a stunning pilothouse that flows in one sharp curve, up and over, its mirror windows echoing the shape. The sharpness about the design is quite attractive at first glance, and stands up to closer inspection.

Step on board and you are greeted by teak decks. (The teak carries on into the large saloon, where it is used decoratively.) The swim platform is huge, because it has to provide a cover for the Arneson drives underneath; on the test boat it also provided the stowage for a Zodiac RIB. There is a garage in the stern, designed for a RIB tender or a Jet Ski but this area would also make convenient stowage for fenders and ropes.

The scale of this yacht again becomes apparent in the cockpit where there is space for a bar counter, a teak dining table, a settee and a small sun bed. Most yachts have just one of these, but on the 108 the cockpit is the primary outside area; a roller blind extending out from the aft end of the superstructure provides sun protection. Another social area is on the foredeck, this one dedicated more to sun worship: Sun beds surround a hot tub to create the fun area of this yacht.

For all its sheer presence outside, you need to enter the saloon to get the full impression of the scale of this yacht. It seems almost cathedral-like with nine-foot headroom, something rare even on a superyacht, let alone on a low-profile sports yacht. The spacious feeling does not stop there: The Sunseeker designers have added roof windows at the aft end and a huge opening sunroof over the forward dining section. This is great for the fresh air at speed, of course-but it also allows formal dining under the stars at night.

All this fresh design thinking does have its quirks. To get a view out forward from the helm, this has been raised up nearly three feet-with the result that when you sit in the saloon there is no view out forward to see where you are going. Also, the backs of the four black helm seats, raised up on the helm platform, seem to loom over the saloon in what I would have to say is a rather dominating way-one that does take some of the excitement out of this area. But there is room for four people at the helm and this may well be enough to give everyone a forward view at speed. (Or you could go out and enjoy the view from the forward social area.)

Overall, Sunseeker seems to have made a good compromise here and the space in the saloon is the main benefit. The cream leather settees in the lounge look particularly handsome against the matt finish of the cherry wood paneling, with the wide vertical side pillars encompassing the air-conditioning grilles.

The eight-seat dining table is angled across the forward space with a bar counter and stools on the opposite side. The dining table is a bit removed from the galley, which is accessed via a stairway down from the aft end of the lounge. Here the galley and the crew quarters form a barrier between the guest accommodation and the engineroom. It is possible to specify a dumb waiter to help the flow of food upstairs.

Access to the staterooms is alongside the helm. The amidships master suite offers options; on the test boat the stairs led straight into a study/lounge as part of the master suite. The other option is for this space to be incorporated as part of the master bedroom, which then becomes huge, leaving room for a lounge area inside. The bathroom is aft with a full-size tub and shower and on the opposite side there is a walk-in closet.

Forward there is the usual layout of two twin cabins and the VIP cabin in the bow. These may be on a less grand scale than the master, but they are still very comfortable; all come complete with en suite marble bathrooms.

It is hard to believe that all this luxury and comfort comes in a package that can achieve close to 50 mph on the water. That is a serious level of performance for a yacht on this scale and not only is there high speed but it comes from a hull that is more capable than most. The 108 is based on a deep-V with relatively fine lines that are hidden by the scale of the yacht. We ran the boat in a five-foot swell and it cut cleanly through the waves, generating very little spray-a sure sign of an efficient hull.

In addition, we had quite a lumpy sea off Ft. Lauderdale, the result of strong onshore winds the previous day. While the seas did not allow full speed to be used, they did allow the capability of this yacht to be fully appreciated. It would turn like a sports boat and progress majestically in a straight line, giving the overall impression of a fine boat for the connoisseur who appreciates quality performance.

The power units that propel this yacht are equally impressive. Three 16-cylinder MTU diesels from the 2000 Series have been shoehorned into the engine compartment to provide a total of 6,000 hp. These engines are coupled to Arneson Drives to create a compact package that is dedicated to high performance. The engineroom itself is accessed through a cockpit deck hatch. Given the three MTUs, getting around below is a bit of a hands-and-knees job. But everything looks well engineered. The 5 tragic minutes that sank a superyacht

PORTICELLO, Italy — Survivors of a storm that sank a superyacht off Sicily recounted their ordeal to one of the doctors who rushed to their aid, with some saying it took mere minutes for the 180-foot ship to go down. 

Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News on the phone Thursday that he arrived in the seaside village of Porticello before dawn Monday, about an hour after the $40 million Bayesian sank in the violent and sudden storm.   

Of the 22 people onboard, 15 survived despite storm conditions and darkness, climbing onto a lifeboat before being rescued by a nearby sailboat. The crew members have made no public statements so far, though some have been interviewed by investigators.

“They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down,” Genco said, recounting what the survivors told him. “All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries,” he said. 

It appears they had just minutes to abandon the sinking ship, Genco said. 

“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the Bayesian's shipbuilder, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said. 

Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in. 

When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair. 

“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found . 

Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.

Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday. 

Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.

Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help. 

“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.

Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said. 

Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water. 

The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank. 

“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”

Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid. 

“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.

The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

6 Passengers, Including 2 Americans, Missing After 180-Foot Yacht Sinks amid Tornado in Sicily

S earch operations are underway for six missing passengers after a yacht sank in a tornado in Sicily on Monday, Aug. 19, while one man had been found dead

Two Americans are reportedly among the passengers missing after a yacht sank in a tornado off the coast of Sicily.

The search for six people continues after a 56-meter (183-ft) yacht carrying 22 sank in the island's Palermo area in the early morning of Monday, Aug 19, according to reports. 

The Italian coastguard said in a statement, per The Guardian , “This morning at about 5 a.m. following a violent storm, a 56-meter yacht called Bayesian flying the British flag sank near Porticello.” 

Eyewitnesses reported that the yacht was anchored when it was struck by a tornado and lost its balance after being hit by a waterspout causing it to sink, per Sicilian news agency Ansa .

The body of a man, who has been identified as a cook on the boat from Canada, was recovered near the vessel on Monday morning, local outlet Palermo Today reported.

Two Americans and four British travelers are still among the missing as fire and water rescue teams search to try and locate them, per Ansa, and local news outlet Corriere Della Sera . 

Coastguard patrol boats and firefighters rescued 15 people as divers reached 49 ft below the sea surface to the vessel, according to the outlets. 

One of those rescued was a 1-year-old English girl named Sophie. She was sent to the Children's Hospital of Palermo, where she was reunited with her mother, who received minor injuries in the incident, per Ansa, The Independent and Corriere Della Sera .

The pair remain in “good condition,” the head of the emergency room of the pediatric hospital, Domenico Cipolla, confirmed to latter outlet. 

The father was sent to the Civic Hospital in Palermo, and five others rescued were transported to an emergency point at another hospital, Ansa reported.

Footage posted by Italy's fire-and-rescue service, Vigili del Fuoco, shows rescue teams on Friday morning sailing out to sea in their continued search for passengers, with divers entering the water and helicopters flying overhead in an attempt for more findings of the wreckage.

According to the tracking website Vesselfinder , the 16-year-old yacht departed a port in Milazzo in Sicily on Wednesday, Aug. 14, and was listed as “at anchor” on Sunday. The ship is managed by Camper and Nicholsons International, per the BBC .

Said fisherman Pietro Asciutto, who witnessed the sinking from his home, per Ansa, "I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows."

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I saw it sink suddenly ... The boat was still floating, then suddenly it disappeared," he added.

The rescue teams theorize the missing people to possibly be trapped inside the hull, making the search for any passengers all the more urgent, Palermo Today reported.
