Captain - Will Lowes Growing up mostly in a Seaside town in East Kent, Will has always known what it´s like to be on a boat and to be living by the sea. After a childhood on the water and 2 years traveling Australia Will decided it was time to knuckle down and complete his courses. Will has many memorable trips but the one that always pops up first is when he ran an adventure sailing trip around the UK. With the forecast being just perfect when he arrived in Oban, W Scotland and was lucky enough to see a lot of the islands without seeing another boat but was welcomed by the incredible wildlife that congregated in that part of the world in the early summer. It´s one of his favourites to date. With a taste for adventure and the beauty of the ocean, Will can create the perfect experience for you. Deckhand - Shane Marais With a background shaped by military values and farm life, Shane is a driven Superyacht Deckhand in the making, driven by a lifelong passion for the ocean. Growing up on his family´s 1000 hectare farm in South Africa, he is no stranger to physical work. Friendly, positive and hardworking, Shane plays a pivotal role in a safe and enjoyable sailing experience Stewardess - Alissa-Christina Smith Allisa started sailing on laser picos in an after school club in Cornwall. As well as growing up sailing with her family which has given her a great sense of navigation. In her early 20s she got a job on a one of a kind 30m Italian build aluminium sloop which was captained by a very knowledgeable sailor Frank Stocker, who it transpires was influential early on in Tracy Edwards career. She was taught a lot about sailing a big boat. She has extensive sailing knowledge having travelled the world by boat and is hands on in every aspect of charter life. Chef - Sophia Kirkpatrick Sophia grew up in a food orientated family. With a mix of Indian and Sicilian heritage she has always been surrounded by diverse flavours, family recipes and food being the focal point of all occasions. She is an artistic person and after 7 years of yachting has found working in the galley an excellent way to channel that creativity in an environment she thrives in. Sophia treasures finding fresh, seasonal produce and creating both innovative and traditional dishes. After recently taking a break from yachting to work in professional kitchens ashore and to run a kitchen of her own, still always feels a calling to the sea and takes pride in being a very accomplished sailor so is always keen to pull some lines and share her wealth of knowledge there´s a spare moment in the galley.

Sailing Yacht ELTON | Windship Trident 31.7 m

Luxurious sailing yacht (31,70 m) with 4 cabins for 8 guests, a crew of 3 for yacht charter in South of France.

The yacht had an extensive refit in 2021 with a renewal of upholstery, panelling, art work, linens and finishings, new rigging, a restored mast so that today she comes with a fresh and contemporary look. A top speed of 12,5 knots shows her excellent performance on the water and a swim platform gives the guests an easy access to the sea.

All cabins have an ensuite bathroom and a double bed, plenty of wardrobe space and a skylight for natural illumination.

West Nautical are thrilled to welcome 31.7m luxury sailing yacht Elton (ex Lunar Mist, Cinderella II)   to our charter fleet, sailing the Western Mediterranean for summer 2021.  

Built by Windship Trident in 1992 and with an interior refit and new rigging in 2020, at 31.7m, S/Y Elton offers charter guests a spacious and stylish approach to sailing.

She accommodates up to 8 guests overnight with 4 crew members to ensure guests have an exquisitely comfortable and luxurious experience. A top speed of 12.5 knots and a cruising speed of 9 knots ensures relaxing sailing and excellent performance on the water.

Captain Olivier’s expert sailing knowledge coupled with Chef Annica’s outstanding Mediterranean and Asian inspired cuisine are set to make each and every charter unforgettable. Captain Olivier will custom design an itinerary for each charter, while Chef Annica creates a personalised menu to suit and excite every guest's palate. Expect a true taste of sailing in optimum comfort.

The vessel’s sophisticated exterior design and engineering are the work of Tripp Design, while her timeless interior is the work of renowned superyacht designer Donald Starkey.

The aft deck serves as the perfect place for guests to unwind in the sun, with an optional Bimini, when shade is required. There are C-shaped sofas either side and a large table for alfresco group dining.

The aft deck also features broad sun pads, which have their own canvas shelter for use in a variety of weather conditions. The stern leads down to the swim platform, where there is a swim ladder granting easy access to the ocean. The foredeck stores the tender, and whilst at anchor, guests can use this extra space for sunbathing.

The fully equipped galley and guest cabins are located below deck, with the amidships dedicated to the saloon area. The saloon features a J-shaped sofa and a comfortable armchair placed around a coffee table. The dining area consists of an L-shaped sofa, dining chairs and an elevated table, comfortably seating 8.

All cabins are en-suite and have a double bed, plenty of wardrobe space and a skylight for natural illumination. The Master en-suite has a bathtub and shower, plus a vanity and head. The other en-suite bathrooms all have a vanity, head and shower. There are 3 crew cabins accommodating up to 4 crew members.

Upstairs, there is a cosy nook featuring a C-shaped sofa and an extendable table, the perfect spot for coffee and board games.

ELTON for sale

Originally launched as CINDERELLA II, this 100ft sailing yacht for sale came from the pen of Bill Tripp famously known for fast, efficient and comfortable design.

Built in GRP with a carbon mast and boom, the sailing performance is unquestionable. In addition, the interior layout was designed by Donald Starkey who delivered a light and airy feel with four en-suite staterooms perfectly suited to the charter market. Three to four crew complement the accommodation offering either a casual family setup or a successful commercial operation.

S/Y Elton: ensuring a return on investment

A discussion with andy scott, the owner of 32m sailing yacht elton, on running a profitable charter yacht….

British entrepreneur and owner of sailing yacht Elton , Andy Scott has made his millions by turning around failing companies under his investment company REL Capital, and attributes his career path to his long-held passion for restoring tired and neglected boats. From a young age, Scott has bought old boats and worked to repair and restore them, always with the aim of making a healthy profit. 

“A family friend had a run-down 30ft yacht, which I took on when I was 14, and I just got the bug for these projects really young,” explains Scott. “And that shaped my career in a way – getting old boats on the water again – because I started out as a property foreman and then went into the business of buying run-down companies on the brink of failure and turning them around to keep them long term.” 

Scott now views his yacht projects in the same way that he does business; “I just look at it really simplistically: if you buy at the right price, and you know what you’re going to spend on it, then you’ve got an asset there which owes you ‘x’ amount. If I think I can rent it out for a certain number of weeks each year, and get a return on investment reasonably quickly, then I usually go for it.”

Scott currently owns two yachts: 32m sloop Elton and 20m classic Sangermani yacht Telstar . He recently sailed Elton from the UK’s South Coast to the Mediterranean following a refit that included new rigging and several interior projects to modernise her. Elton will be based in the Mediterranean for the 2021 summer charter season and will cross to the Caribbean in the winter. 

At the time of speaking, Elton has eight weeks’ worth of bookings for this summer (with West Nautical as central agent), meaning that the boat is already proving a sound investment for Scott. “She’s chartering for eight weeks at around 30,000 euros a week, and that’ll make probably 100,000 euros of profit,” estimates Scott. “If the boat can bring in 240,000-300,000 euros a year of income, there’s enough for me to pay the crew, have a reasonable maintenance provision and make some money.”

While Scott acknowledges that there may be more interest in charters this summer due to the pandemic, with several longer charters booked in, he is hopeful for a successful Caribbean season also. “I already have two charters booked for two weeks, and you can guarantee that Christmas and New Year will also fill up. Of course, I have to consider the time it takes to do the crossings and the toll it takes on the boat, but four or five weeks of charters over there will make the trip worthwhile,” he assesses.

In addition to securing charters to ensure a return on investment, Scott is particular about the way he runs the boat. “You have to do it leanly,” he explains. “I do all of the management myself – people get ripped off when there’s so many layers of consultants and management. And, in terms of charters, I’m really opportunity-lead. If we can get offers out of clients, we’ll see if we can get the boat there – it’s about being flexible. The key to me is trying to get clients as return guests – making every aspect feel like a returning home, without the downside of running costs – because that obviously helps the return on investment.”

As well as prioritising any charter opportunities over his own usage, Scott also differs in mindset to the typical yacht owner when he’s on board. “I think that traditional owner-crew dynamic is probably a bit outdated – I think of myself as part of the team and part of the crew,” he adds. “I don’t expect to be waited on, I do watches, and I think that changes the dynamic for the better.”

Scott’s other yacht, the 20m Telstar,  is currently in the midst of being restored. As with Elton , Scott hopes to make the boat profitable on the charter market. “The aim is to charter it out for six weeks a year at 12,000 euros a week,” he concludes. “It is modelled a little bit differently because of the additional classic regatta income stream, so I think that will be an interesting market in the next couple of years as well.”
