Frequently Asked Questions:

Is felicity sailing “that crowded boat”.

NO. While some boat tour operators in San Pedro cater to large groups at bargain rates, Felicity Sailing is different. For instance: many of the bargain operators will take your group out on a very basic speed boat or an over-crowded Catamaran, let you swim around at Hot Chan, and zoom back to shore. When you book with Felicity Sailing, we will take you out on our luxury yacht: A Lagoon 380 Owner’s Version Catamaran. We are not a bargain operator for quick trips out to the reef. Book with us if you are looking for a world-class Belize sailing adventure.

Can I really afford a Belize sailing vacation on a luxury yacht?

Yes, you can! The “per person” cost of a yachting vacation is usually at or below the cost of a resort vacation or ocean cruise, without the crowds. Interested in booking a Belize sailing vacation? contact us today!

What’s the difference between a group trip and a private yacht charter?

Group tours can have up to 16 guests at a time. We require a minimum of 8 guests in order to confirm a group trip. Group boat trips are ideal for individuals or smaller groups that are looking for a more affordable boat trip aboard our luxury Catamaran. When you book a private yacht charter, you and your family/friends have the boat all to yourself and can vacation in style on our luxury yacht. We will tailor the experience and itinerary. Just tell us where you want to go and what you want to do. A crewed charter is the ultimate in Belize sailing vacations, and is ideal for anyone looking for something really special to do with their family/friends. Our skipper and friendly crew will take care of all the work. Each private charter includes a crew of experienced professionals, including an experienced skipper and chef, who offer discrete, yet attentive five-star customer service. Just sit back and relax.

Desert Islands and Sealife in Abundance: Discover Belize by Sailboat

Belize is located on the north eastern coast of Central America. With the world's second largest barrier reef skirted by over 200 square miles of cayes and small islands, abundant marine species and diverse ecosystems, Belize is a must-visit for charterers who enjoy more natural, less developed sailing destinations. With a growing reputation for tropical island sailing holidays, Belize is one of those few places left to discover before everyone else does. Let us work with you on boat availability and itinerary options for a special sailing holiday in this unique destination.

Exploring the Islands and Waters of the World's Second-longest Barrier Reef

International charter companies have recognised the growing popularirty of Belize as a destination, supplying a range of excellent boats with service levels equal to anywhere. There are special conditions to be aware of when sailing this region, and we work closely with specialist operators to give you the itinerary that works for you. Ouir more adventorous clients see Belize as a hugely satisfying place to go sailing.

The coast of Belize and its extensive outer reef comprise one of the world's most unspoilt natural environments. In these pristine waters of the western Caribbean, your sailboat charter gives access to amazing experiences among the cayes, with a rich array of wildlife to observe, all under blue skies in reliable sailing and holiday weather.

English is more widely spoken than most places in Central America (in fact it's the official language), so there's no communication barrier to having fun. Belize locals offer visitors the warmest of welcomes. Restaurants and stores however are few and far between, so you need to be well-provisioned before setting out from base.

Belize is famous for the barrier reef system it shares with the Yucatan Peninsula, with the Belize section stretching an unbroken 190 miles. The waters on the reef's western side sit over a limestone shelf that results in a relatively shallow expanse: ideal for snorkelling and diving, but with plenty of depths for extensive sailboat cruising.

There are charter boat bases nearby Belize City, the international point of entry, and at Placencia, a 40 minute flight south. The distance between bases makes a seven-day sailing itinerary a choice between visiting northern or southern sections of the string of cayes that line the barrier reef.

Sailing Conditions in Belize

Prevailing winds in Belize waters clock primarily from northeast to southeast at a consistent 10-20 knots, making for glorious sailing conditions in smooth seas protected by the reef from the open Caribbean. The climate is sub-tropical and the annual temperature averages around 80° F (20º C).

A day's (or less) sail east of the Barrier Reef, the atolls of Turneffe, Lighthouse and Glover are amazing places to visit. The famous Great BlueHole is in this area. To venture outside the reef requires a hired skipper on board, as these waters are not well charted and there are numerous potential hazards. It you'd like to include the outer atolls on your itinerary, talk to us about a crewed charter or skippered bareboat for that part of your sailing vacation.

300km-long Belize Barrier Reef is the UNESCO World Heritage protected and a renowned snorkeling and destination for scuba diving. During your sailing vacation in Belize you can visit Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve, South Water Cay Marine Reserve and sail to the Blue Hole Natural Monument, an impressive 1,000 ft-wide sinkhole ringed with coral.

Things to do during yacht charter in Belize

  • Explore the Mayan ruins of Altun Ha. This could be one of the first things to do when you get ashore. Take a walk around ancient stone structures built by the Mayans dated back to 800-900 BC. Altun Ha is located just 30 miles north from Belize City.
  • Set up sails to Ambergris Caye. This caye is the largest island in Belize, and remains unspoiled despite being very popular among sailors. You can do some fishing in the morning and  then prepare your catch of the day for dinner.
  • Sail to famous Blue Hole. If you are certified diver, don’t miss the famous Blue Hole – a perfectly circular underwater sinkhole with the Lighthouse Feef Atoll. You’ll find huge coral formations, abundant marine life, and deep caves filled with stalactites.
  • Visit Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary: Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is known as the world’s first jaguar sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to exotic flora and fauna, as well as waterfalls for a refreshing swim.
  • Explore Cayo Region: Sail along Belize wester border, an ideal destination for adventurer skippers. Actun Tunichil Muknal will amaze you with its cave systems, subterranean waterfalls and ancient rivers. Adrenaline-inducing zip-lining experiences can also be found here.

Regulations for bareboat charters

  • A certificate of competency is mandatory for bareboat charter in Belize. If you renting a boat in Belize, you need to apply for this document to Belize Port Authority. The application is simple but should be made 2 weeks prior to your arrival. We will assist you and submit it for you locally.
  • Fishing is forbidden in marine reserves.
  • Please also note that marine reserves typically charge fees per person of for the moorings.

Sailing in Belize

Main yacht charter base is located in Placencia, perfect start for you sailing vacation offering sandy low-lying cays where you can immerse yourself in beautiful, untouched and peaceful surroundings.

While ashore, you may discover Mayan ruins and meet locals who speak English and a dialect called Belizean Creole. The nation’s multi-cultural influences are everywhere, including the Mexican / Jamaican fusion cuisine and Afro-Caribbean music.

During your yacht charter in Belize you may visit three atolls: Glover’s Reef, Lighthouse Reef and Turneffe. There reefs will surprise you with rich marine life. Take a swim among 500 species of fish, 100 types of coral, sharks, rays, and dolphins.

You may also set up sails to Coco Plum Cay, Wippari Cay, Lark Cay, South Water Cay, Lagoon Cay and Hatchet Cay. Please note, three of these coral atolls are outside of the reef and you will need a local skipper to sail the open water.

Weather in Belize

The best time to rent a boat in Belize is during the dry season, from late November to mid-April. Warm temperatures, sunny skies and access to top attractions can be experienced this time of year. The temperature remain fairly consistent all year-round with an average range from 74°F to 84°F.

  • Summer high in September is around 88°F
  • Winter low in January is about 72°F

Belize yacht charter vacation offers balmy easterly trade winds year-round with the wind speed between 15 and 22 knots ideal for cruising conditions. Also you may enjoy calm waters while sailing inside the barrier reef.

Most passages are short and primarily line-of-sight, but plotting courses and referencing to the charts is must, due to the many reefs. Avoid Tom Owens Island as there are too many difficult underwater reefs. Also note that you’ll need local guide or skipper if you plan to sail outside of the barrier reef to Glover’s, Turneffe or Lighthouse Reefs.

Belize trade winds blow along the coastal cays consistently most of the year. Although cold fronts affect the country from October through to April the most likely months for frontal passages are December, January and February. In December and January fronts are most likely to become stationary over Belize.

Hear it From Travelers Who've Sailed Aboard Belize Charter Yachts

Even after repeated changes to the itinerary due to Covid, our trip was well planned. From airlines, airport transfers, lodging/boat reservations and tours, all clicked perfectly and we moved through the trip without incident.

We traveled with another family so it was super fun and easy. This trip is a great way to go with 2 families. Kids and adults had a blast!

The trip to Belize was fantastic. We got to experience both the jungle and the ocean. Both places were excellent and different.

Our trip guides were incredible. All of them were very nice and very knowledgeable about the trip. Every guide had great enthusiasm and was just very happy to have us.

The food and hospitality were fantastic. The people of Belize frequently thank us for visiting their country. We really felt welcome!

From home departure to arrival back home all was laid out perfectly to navigate covid, land and sea itinerary. Started with Cha Creek Lodge and the Cayo District area. Moved on to water with a catamaran via Belize Sailing Vacations. Trip of a lifetime for myself, wife and 17 year old girls. We were joined by our friends with two similar age kids, making our group 8. A group of 8 worked well with all aspects of travel, transportation, lodging, dinner and tours.

Accommodations Review

Cha Creek Lodge: We had a great cottage with two queen beds no AC. We were comfortable and enjoyed the outdoor shower (had an indoor one too). We didn't spend much time in the unit during the day and with fans we didn't need AC at night (we were there in June/July). No problem with buds. Very clean, daily housekeeping. Our unit adjoined another unit and as the jungle wakes up many very early (5-6am), be prepared in your screened in unit to be awoken by your neighbors. It was fine to hear the jungle early, but not kids playing like they should at 5am...

Belize Sailing Vacation: We stayed on the 47' Tranquilo. There's one smaller queen cabin which our 17 year old girls used was fine for them. We had a bigger cabin with tons of storage and a nice bathroom. Our friends had a similar cabin to us and their boys used the bunk bed cabin. The cabins worked for all of us just fine as we used the cabins for sleep/storage only as we hung out in the galley or top deck. AC is provided via generator while sleeping when not on shore power and was comfortable. So, it can get hot with no wind while not sailing but the ocean was right there to jump in. Each day the beds were made and the bathroom tidied up. Our boat allowed us to take very short showers for about half our trip until we could fill the water tanks so be prepared for a quick get wet, turn off, lather/shampoo and quick rinse. On the boat we had good snorkel gear, 2 kayaks, 4 paddleboards (only needed 2), Manny's fishing/spear gear, motor dingy.

Meals Review

Cha Creek Lodge: We ate all meals at the Lodge. The menus were simple with popular and local choices. ALL were great. Dinner portions on the smaller side if you had a long day out on tours, but if you order a soup/salad you are fine. The bar had fresh fruit drinks and always had ice/water to fill your water bottle. The to go lunches with tours were always fresh and lots of choice, even local bean/rice/chicken and cold drinks (you will see other tour groups and their lunches did not look as good and was missing table cloths).

Belize Sailing Vacations: AMAZING food cooked by Cainee. Each meal different from the day before. You got a breakfast, simple snack, lunch, snack/app and dinner/dessert. Each based on the day of activities and when start breakfast and done sailing. Breakfast ranged from egg/meat to yogurts/continental. Always had coffee going before anyone was up. Fruit galore. Simple snack was usually after our first dive and was chips/dips/fruit. Lunch was always enough and again had a variety of meals. Dinner was always great and if you catch enough fish/lobster you'll have a great dinner. You'll also have chicken and or brought/bought fish along the way. Again food was amazing. The beverages were also good as we were provided enough non alcoholic drinks (coke, sprite, ginger ale, grapefruit and juices) and alcoholic (beer and 3 rums). Lots of options to make any tropical drink. We brought some vodka and tequila from the duty free store and this was nice to have to mix it up, but would have been fine without. Drinking water came from a large container and was good quality.

Crew & Guides Review

Chaa Creek Lodge: The local guides (bird hike, butterfly, night hike, horseback, Caracol, ATM) were very knowledgeable in local wildlife, plants, culture, history. Each were enthusiastic in telling their personal local story, historical facts and knowledge of the area. They were definitely not just along for the ride and wanted you to experience/learn while you were with them. I believe Cha Creek Lodge mostly uses their own staff as guides and not outside companies, I think this helped in them connecting better with our group. Unfortunately I do not remember names.

Belize Sailing Vacations: Manny and Cainee where great hosts on the boat. You felt safe in Manny's hands as he always was the foremost captain waking before you rose, sailing the boat all day, with you on all excursions/snorkels, spear fishing fresh fish or setting the trolling gear, getting whatever you needed and going to bed after you. Also he was very knowledgeable of the wildlife, sea, islands, people and Belize; on top of being friendly and funny. Cainee was a hard worker also rising before you and going to bed after you. While helping Manny with some boating like anchoring, she never stopped cooking, cleaning and making sure you were having a good time.

Itinerary Review

On Land: Cha Creek Lodge was very nice. The accommodations, food and staff were great but even better were the activities at the Lodge (Reserve) and their own guides taking us off site. At the Reserve we horseback rode, tubed, rafted the Mecal River, bird watched, live butterfly exhibit, Belize/Mayan history and to top it off howler monkeys and other wildlife all around you. The guided tours though were special, including Caracol and Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave. Caracol was bit of a drive but worth it with few tourists (I'd guess less than 50). The ruins are amazing with our guide providing great history. I won't go into depth as you can read other docs on what is here. After Caracol, along the way back ended with the cool water swim at Big Rock Falls (kids loved the rock jumping), this was a great way to break up the drive.

ATM was even better with seeing real Mayan sacrifice urns and skeletal remains. It starts by navigating the wet cave with some harder maneuvering/climbs but nothing too hard with your guide's help and didn't feel claustrophobic. At a point you leave the cave river and head up into the cave. The various chambers were amazing as you made your way to the end with an entire skeleton on display. There were some gigantic chambers which were some of the biggest I've seen. At Cha Creek Lodge we had 3 full days but 4 would have been better so we could have spent more time in San Ignacio or local towns (1st day - arrive late/pool, 2nd day - rest/butterfly/Horse/bird watch/pool, 3rd day - ATM/raft, 4th day - Coracal/Big Rock, 5th day - leave late morning). All guides from Horseback to ATM were well versed in the local/mayan history/wildlife.

On Sea: Upon arrival to our Belize Sailing Vacation Catamaran (Tranquilo) for 8 nights, we were greeted by Captain/Master fisherman/diver Manny and 1st Mate/Cook Extraordinaire Cainee. Really nice boat. We were very fortunate our first day on the boat was opening lobster season. We speared fish with the great help of Manny and had enough lobster for days. We added other fish caught off the boat over the trip as we trolled from snorkel/night spots. The snorkeling/scuba (dive) were great with each spot offering a bit different dive whether different coral or fish or beach. Most days were slower with breakfast around 7-8, move on to next island/reef, dive, lunch, move to next island/reef, dive, dinner. Our group was pretty active enjoying at least 2 dives a day, enjoying books/games/swimming/sun/learning from Manny/Cainee. We visited some islands and hung out in the sun. Had a couple off days with only one dive or none. We enjoyed Placencia and other small island hikes/bars. We stayed on mainland only one night. We always had enough great food, drink and ice.

Transportation Review

Airlines and ground transportation were great. This includes the required covid tests. Luckily the airlines were on time and our ground transportation was always there meeting us.

  • The Lodge at Chaa Creek

After sitting idle for 16 months from traveling outside of the US, it was awesome to finally venture out and have it be to Belize! This was a trip that was postponed from 2020 and it exceeded our expectations in experience, accommodation and activity. (We had) a desire to go on a sail boat, snorkel and dive and get out to the Caribbean. We were able to dabble in the interior for some jungle love and then on a sailing catamaran extravaganza around the cayes of Belize. We traveled with another family so it was super fun and easy. This trip is a great way to go with 2 families. Kids and adults had a blast! The mantra of the trip "Now we're doing something" couldn't have rang more true!!

Chaa Creek was beautiful and our villa was quite fancy. Large windows, spacious, a/c, our own pool and howler monkeys hanging out next to it. The catamaran "Tranquilo" was equally as nice. It fit the 8 of us plus the 2 crew just fine. Had a/c in the rooms, seemed to have plenty of storage, and the bathrooms worked fine.

Food at both the lodge and on the catamaran was wonderful. All fresh and uniquely prepared. Kainie from the boat was amazing in what she prepared and even went the extra mile and gave us a 4th of July picnic since we were there for the holiday. Just awesome.

Our group loved the ATM wet cave where you swam and splunked through big caverns and narrow passageways only to come to a part of the cave where old pottery relics and skeleton bones dated 1600 years were left behind by Mayan people. The Mayan ruin of Caracol. The fishing, snorkeling and diving of the incredible reefs of Belize. There is not much not to enjoy but I probably would not have done the tubing from Chaa Creek as it was long and slow.

I think if you have a group that would like to go to Belize spending the money on a charter boat is the way to go. So intimate, lots of flexibility and fun. The kids were taught to spear fish by our captain, sailing to the different cayes was amazing. I would have liked to have seen some more local communities but that can be for the next sailing trip. Being in the jungle and at Chaa Creek was also a great side trip to do in addition to the boat. So glad we got to experience both the jungle and sea!

Transportation was arranged via Chaa Creek and Belize Sailing Vacation. All were flawless and we were met on time with comfortable travel vehicles all equipped with a/c which was great since it was so hot and humid!

Communication about expectations and how to prepare were spot on and well needed since it had been awhile since any of us had traveled out of the country. With all the nuances added due to Covid we never felt uninformed about changes or requirements. Pretty seamless. Adventuresmith also provided us with a useful app that had all of our pertinent information, flights, etc for easy access to resources.

Adventuresmith prepared us in such a way that we always were kept abreast on any and all changes, requirements or nuances with the trip that we needed to be aware of. The app we had that held all of our information was pretty slick. Trip information and details were complete and accurate. Friendly and knowledgeable staff that were genuinely excited for us to travel.

Traveler Advice

Flights seem to change constantly so keep up with it. Make sure to do your research on what excursions you want to do and ask questions. Sometimes while you're in the country of travel you need to work a little for clarification for some of the excursions or experiences.

The trip to Belize was fantastic. We got to experience both the jungle and the ocean. Both places were excellent and different. I enjoyed it all. It was so fun being able to explore and learn about the Belizean culture. Everything was amazing. We enjoyed every aspect of the trip.

I really enjoyed staying in the jungle at Chaa Creek. I have never done anything like that before so it was so cool to experience.

All meals were so delicious and unique.

Todd knows what he is doing and brought us on an excellent trip. (AdventureSmith is) the best travel company out there.

Get excited.

Our trip guides were incredible. All of them were very nice and very knowledgeable about the trip. Every guide had great enthusiasm and was just very happy to have us. (Our fellow participants were) very good. They were as active as us and very kind. They were also very social.

Chaa Creek and the sailboat were both great. In Chaa Creek your rooms are very open and comfortable and it had a nice pool for you to cool off in. The sailboat was great too; you can jump off it when you're stopped and the rooms are very cozy. It was amazing that the hotels we were staying at let us pick what we wanted to do; the boat also did the same and it was great.

I liked every meal I had on this trip. All of it was fresh and very well prepared. The meals on the boat were sometimes even fish we caught while moving.

My most enjoyed experience on this trip was scuba diving. Scuba diving was super fun and a great new experience for me. We saw super cool fish and creatures and the overall experience was great. My least Favorite experience was rafting down the river at Chaa Creek. You really have to raft at a certain time when the river is full and running fast; sadly, we did not go at that time and it was very slow and we had to paddle the entire thing.

The transportation was always on time and they used very good cars. The drivers were very nice and wouldn't be mad if you had to stop.

Be ready for the heat.

Trip of a lifetime!! It was a great combination of exploring the jungle, ruins, and caves with sailing, snorkeling, and exploring cayes! The amount of wildlife we encountered both on land and sea was overwhelming. We needed to start a log so we would not forget! The food and hospitality were fantastic. The people of Belize frequently thank us for visiting their country. We really felt welcome!

Both Chaa Creek and the boat were very comfortable and upscale.

Not much more to say than the food was fantastic!

Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly. Really made us feel at home.

Hard to say (what I enjoyed the most)! I loved the ruins and cave visit but also loved all our time on the boat. It was perfect to combine the two. (What places or experiences did I enjoy the least?) None! I just would have liked one more day at Chaa Creek because there is so much to do.

We did not even need to think about it. It was all arranged and timely.

They helped us navigate all the new Covid requirements easily.

If you are going from land to sea and have packed light, take advantage of having some clothes laundered from Chaa Creek.

In general however, the region is still relatively undiscovered among luxury yachts, ensuring an an element of adventure is mixed into the vacation.

However, this charter destination enjoys moderate climes year round.

Guests can expect to stumble upon secluded coves, remote atolls and deserted sandbars out at sea; while on the shore, days can be spent scaling mountains, sampling fiery cuisine or traversing ancient Maya ruins. With so much to offer, Belize provdies the ultimate tropical getaway.

Superyacht itineraries in Belize

A yacht charter in Belize usually begins in Placencia, a town in the north known for its palm-lined beaches and lively ambience. The surrounding seas are rich with cays and atolls that are primed for exploration, particularly the remote islands of Whipray Cave and  Hideaway Cave. Afterwards, guests on their luxury yacht should head to Lagoon Cay a private ring-shaped island where charterers can kayak over a lipid lagoon. After several days traversing the azure-blue seas, charter guests can step on shore to discover lush jungles peppered with Mayan ruins and villages.

Terms and conditions, charter experts, llc terms & conditions.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Belize's Great Blue Hole Is a Once-in-a-lifetime Destination for Divers — Here's How to Visit

Here’s what you need to know before visiting the Great Blue Hole.

Belize's Great Blue Hole is one of the country's most famous attractions and is, without a doubt, one of the top diving sites in the world. Surrounded by the Lighthouse Reef atoll, the Great Blue Hole is a natural sinkhole that measures roughly 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep. Seen from space, the center of the hole is a deep navy blue that stands out in a sea of aquamarine waters and white-sand beaches.

The Great Blue Hole is believed to be the world's largest feature of its kind and is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sinkhole formed during the last glacial period, sometime between 25,000 to 100,000 years ago (though some experts say it could be as old as 150,000 years), and it was later flooded by rising ocean levels. It is one of the most popular dive sites in the world, made famous by Jacques Cousteau who visited in the 1970s and named it one of the best diving spots on the planet.

Visiting the Great Blue Hole is certainly the adventure of a lifetime, but it does take some leg work and, in some cases, advanced preparation to get there. Here's what you need to know to plan the perfect trip to Belize's Great Blue Hole.

How to Visit the Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is about 43 miles from mainland Belize, but most visitors will be visiting via boat or helicopter from one of Belize's many barrier islands.

Getting there by boat can take three to four hours, depending on whether you're coming from the north or the south. "It's ideal to visit the Great Blue Hole from the northern part of Belize because it's easier to get to from there," said Patricia Johnson, director of Absolute Belize and a Travel + Leisure A-List Advisor .

If you're looking for a budget-friendly way to see the Great Blue Hole, you can arrange a shared tour with a local tour operator like Amigos Del Mar , which Johnson recommends. If you want something a little bit more intimate, you can jump to the next tier and charter a boat exclusively for your group or even book a multi-night catamaran adventure.

"The ultimate way to visit is by chartering a catamaran," said Johnson. "You have your own floating hotel, and you're out there just enjoying the atoll."

Johnson uses Belize Sailing Vacations because their charters are all-inclusive. The captain is a local guide, the first mate is the chef, and the nightly rate includes housekeeping, meals, drinks, snorkel equipment, and more. Plus, with the flexibility of a private charter, you will be able to visit several of the remote tropical islands that are part of the atoll.

You can also see the Great Blue Hole via helicopter tours — ideal for non-divers who want to skip the long boat ride. "The Blue Hole is great for diving and snorkeling, but for people who just want to see it because it's a bucket-list item, they can do a helicopter tour over the Blue Hole and take some amazing pictures." Fly-over tours are great because they're fast and provide gorgeous visuals of the entire Blue Hole from above. Johnson recommends Tropic Air , which offers fly-overs twice a week from Ambergris Caye.

Diving the Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is one of the most famous dive sites in the world, drawing people from all over who want to explore its mysterious depths. There are millennia worth of stalactites, stalagmites, and, yes, even a few sharks. The entire area surrounding the Great Blue Hole is prime real estate for spotting a kaleidoscope of tropical fish, shrimp, and other Caribbean wildlife, so it’s a paradise for people who love to explore the world below the surface of the water.

That said, only those who are fully qualified can dive here — it is not a dive for beginners. To be qualified, divers need at least an Open Water or Advanced Open Water diving certification. Before diving the Blue Hole, divers will typically practice their skills with a divemaster who will make the final call on whose skills are up to the challenges of the Blue Hole. (Ask your tour operator for the specific requirements before you book.)

San Pedro in Ambergris Caye has many dive shops to choose from, such as Belize Pro Dive Center , Ambergris Divers , Belize Diving Adventures , and Amigos Del Mar. You can also depart from Caye Caulker , which has several dive shops, like Scuba Sensation and Frenchie's Diving . The price is roughly the same (typically starting around $300 before equipment rentals), no matter which island you're leaving from.

If you are doing a day trip, the itinerary will likely include a couple of additional dives along the Belize Barrier Reef. Multi-day liveaboard packages are ideal for divers who want to check out multiple dive sites in the area.

Truly, there is no bad time to dive in Belize, but the best months to dive the Great Blue Hole are April, May, and June, according to the PADI blog . This is when you'll have peak visibility, fewer crowds, and the potential to see whale sharks. Visibility is also good from June through November, but because it's the rainy season, the water can be bumpy. December through April is the dry season, so expect fantastic weather, but know that this is peak tourist season, so prices will increase along with the number of visitors.
