Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
The Yacht Race You Need to See to Believe
WHAT SPARKS YOUR INTEREST?
- Where To Stay
- Things To Do
- Book a Tour
Considered one of the most difficult yacht races in the world, this is one of Australia’s most beloved and anticipated events.
What Is It?
The yacht race starts in Sydney, Australia and takes racers all the way to the Tassie capital of Hobart , taking place over several days. The winner often reaches the finish line in less than two. With over 100 contestants, this is an extremely challenging and competitive race.
What Can You Expect
Interested in catching the end of the race? Go to Hobart’s Constitution Dock where the fleet will arrive after finishing the race and witness local new year festivities.
The race is held by both the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (Sydney). The winner receives a Rolex watch--hence the festival’s name. It is extremely difficult to win and the crews of the yachts compete at the most professional level.
When and Where?
Not sure where to go? If you want to celebrate with the yacht’s captain’s and enjoy champagne, then you will want to go to Hobart. To get there, fly into Hobart’s international airport .
Go to the Royal Botanical Gardens for the best view of the competing yachts. For a fun time, bring food and snacks for a picnic. If you want to see the boats cross the finish line, then you will need to stay in Hobart beforehand. Most boats start to arrive 2 or 3 days after the race begins.
The race started in 1945. Since that time, its taken place every single year without missing a beat. Yacht racing can find its origins in England.
Luckily for spectators, the event only costs money for those yachts that register to compete.

- 17 Sep, 2024 11:11:00 AM
The countdown is officially on! In just 100 days, the starting cannon will signal the beginning of the 79th edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. On December 26th, the world’s top sailors will once again converge in Sydney Harbour, ready to embark on one of the most iconic and challenging ocean races.
With a reputation for challenging weather and the notorious conditions of the Bass Strait, the race is a true test of skill, endurance, and teamwork. Yachts of all sizes and crews from around the globe will push their limits over the 628-nautical-mile course, heading south to Tasmania’s historic capital.
This year’s race is expected to draw fierce competition, with some of the world’s fastest and most advanced yachts entering the lineup. Whether racing for Line Honours or the prestigious Tattersall Cup, crews will have to be prepared for anything as they navigate the elements in the “Great Race South.”
As we hit the 100-day mark, excitement is building, and the anticipation for this legendary event is palpable. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the start of the 79th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race!

Tassie team wins Sailing Champions League - Asia Pacific opener
Tassie team wins Sailing Champions League – Asia Pacific opener
The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania (RYCT) has emerged victorious at the first event of the 2021 Sailing Champions League – Asia Pacific season with an exciting win in the SCL – AP: Southern Qualifier hosted by the Mornington Yacht Club at the weekend.
Helmed by Sam King with crew Chloe Fisher, Alice Buchanan and Charlie Zeeman, the RYCT team sailed consistently all weekend, however saved their best until last to prevail in the six-team finals series against some tough competition.
It was the second year in a row an RYCT team has taken out the Southern Qualifier with Oliver Burnell successful in Geelong last January.
“Full credit to the team, I really owe it to them, they made me look good,” said an elated King after racing concluded on Sunday.
“A massive thanks to everyone who helped us, mainly the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania … and to all the organisers at this club (MYC) and to Mark Turnbull for getting this kind of thing running.
“It’s just a really great event and we’re stoked to have Tassie take it out twice.”
The finals series was set up so the first two races would see the last boat to finish being eliminated – and from then it was the first of the final four boats to register two race wins that would take out the event.
The RYCT win wasn’t without its challenges though with the Sandringham Yacht Club team led by James Sly finishing in second place and quite nearly taking the win off the Tasmanians in the finals, having also won a race.
In third place was Harrison Sly and his team, also representing Sandringham, while Laura Harding and her Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron team finished in fourth.
Hometown hopeful Chris Jackson and his Mornington Yacht Club team qualified as the top seed going into the finals, but unfortunately were eliminated just before going to the final four, which would see them finish in fifth place.
Sandringham youngster Matty Goss and his team also had a great regatta to qualify as the sixth team in the finals, however, weren’t able to hold on and were eliminated in the first finals race.
The first Under 22 entrant was Harrison Sly and his Sandringham team, while Goss and his team were second and Mornington Yacht Club young gun James Jackson and his team were third.
The top four teams of the event have now qualified for the SCL Asia Pacific Final, which will be held in Sydney in April, while the next event is the Northern Qualifier for QLD, NSW, ACT and NT clubs, which will be hosted by the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club on March 20-21.
