History and legacy of the naples yacht club

A journey through time: the beginnings of a prestigious club.

If you’ve ever strolled along the serene waters of Naples Bay, you’ve likely marveled at the sight of the Naples Yacht Club. What you might not know is the fascinating history behind this iconic establishment. Founded in 1947, the club started as a humble gathering spot for local yacht enthusiasts who sought camaraderie, competition, and a love for the sea.

Sailing through history: emblem of luxury

The Naples Yacht Club didn't take long to establish itself as an emblem of luxury and exclusivity. Early members, driven by a shared passion for yachting, pooled their resources to create a space that was more than just a club—it was a second home. Dress code and etiquette guidelines

Maintaining a sophisticated vibe.

When it comes to keeping things classy, the Naples Yacht Club really knows its stuff. Whether you're heading to the Lighthouse Lounge or just grabbing a bite in the dining room, there are certain expectations that will keep the atmosphere tip-top. The club isn't just about yachts and boating—it's a good mix of relaxation and sophistication.

The dress code essentials

Let's talk threads. For men, collared shirts and comparable attire are a must, ditch those tees and shorts unless it’s a super casual event or stated otherwise. Women can opt for everything from elegant dresses to neat skirts or pants. Shoes should be classy but comfortable, leaving flip-flops for the beach. And remember, this isn't about snobbery, but about maintaining a vibe that everyone can enjoy.

More casual for specific events

Eager to know when you can let loose a bit? Well, the club does mix things up. During certain gatherings, casual attire is perfectly acceptable. Check the event specifics beforehand. Friday, Saturday, or special themed nights often have a more relaxed dress code, giving you a chance to switch things up a bit.

Setting expectations for guests

If you plan to bring guests, make sure they're in the loop too. Give them a heads-up about the dress code to avoid any awkward moments. This ensures everyone enjoys the top-notch vibe the club is known for.

Etiquette guidelines

Beyond sartorial choices, etiquette is key in any high-end club. Respect for fellow members and staff goes a long way. Remember to keep phones on silent or vibrate, and step out to take calls if needed. It's those small courtesies that keep the club experience pleasant for all.

Jack Messmer's thoughts

Jack Messmer, a long-time member, once said, "The balance between formality and comfort is what makes the Naples Yacht Club feel like a second home." It’s these words that echo the sentiment of many members, ensuring that the club retains its welcoming yet refined atmosphere.

Naples Sailing and Yacht Club: more than just boating

The club gives members a way to meet and enjoy the water with other boaters.

When you go by boat at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club, you tie more than nautical knots.

You tie knots with hundreds of friends by land and by sea.

While boating is usually an activity done with family and perhaps a few friends, in Naples it expands beyond one boat to everything from multi-boat cruises and regattas to things that are not even related to the water.

The club began in 1964 with a bunch of sailboats and a little shack. Now members dance, dine, party, swim and relax in a modern clubhouse designed to look like a cruise ship. Inside everything from the nautical flags in the ballroom, to the portholes on the kitchen doors make members feel like they are on a luxury ship.

Members cruise together to other clubs around Florida and the Caribbean. Some of the more popular boating outings include trips to Longboat Key, Key West, and Marathon.

There’s also a fishing club that organizes fishing trips. Those with sailboats fight for bragging rights in regattas.

But Jerry Watkins, a member for 16 years and the sailing and fleet captain of the club, said the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club is so much more than boating.

“We have clubs within clubs,” he said.

RELATED CONTENT : Three of nation's top yacht clubs in Collier

There’s a car club with more than 100 members, a club for bridge, yoga, Mah Jong, bowling, a book club, investment club and more.

Watkins owns a 42-foot sailboat. He said he purposely didn’t buy a home on the water. Instead, he used the money he saved by not living waterfront to join the club.

“And now I have 300 friends,” he said. “People like a sense of belonging. The camaraderie is the biggest part of it. It’s just all fun. That’s what it’s all about.”

Art Lottes is the commodore and owner of a 30-foot Tiara.

He says he loves the sunset cruises, and boating to Marco Island or Pelican Isle for lunch. He also enjoys the poker run.

“You go to five venues throughout Naples Bay and pick up a card at each one and then try to make a poker hand out of it,” he explained.

Lottes said being part of the club gives members a way to meet and enjoy the water with other boaters.

“People are always looking for people to boat with,” he said. “It brings people together.”

Denise and Ty Wilburn have been members for seven years.

“It is a real social club,” Denise Wilburn said. “My husband and I say it is the best thing we did since we came to Naples, Florida. We have met people at that yacht club that we call dear friends, that will be our friends for life.”

RELATED CONTENT : Video: These luxury yachts will have you say, "Sign me up!"

The Wilburns say they enjoy the cruises, especially the ones they have taken to Plantation and Boca Grande. They also enjoy the welcoming feeling at the club.

“Almost from the moment we walked in the door people were welcoming and we felt like we belonged,” Denise Wilburn said.

“People could not be friendlier,” he said. “The friendliness of the membership, that is most important to us. It’s very social and the programs are terrific.”

Zaccagnino said members are very active and there are always events with enthusiastic participants. Besides cruises on his yacht, he enjoys being a part of the car club, investment club and men’s luncheon club.

“We decided we wanted boating to be a part of our lives here,” he said. “The club has many positive attributes. It is an exceptional clubhouse and a very exceptional facility and it has the best views of the harbor.”

The Naples Sailing & Yacht club has 325 members, but can have up to 500 members.

The biggest boat on site is 86 feet. There is no limit on boat size, but the water depth is 6 feet so that limits the size that can make it to the dock. There are 88 slips for vessels.

Members can also dock and use the facilities at reciprocal clubs around the nation and even the world.

“I’ve been to London and been to a club there and you are an honored guest,” Watkins said.

For people from other clubs visiting the one in Naples, there are bicycles to use to pedal into town.

“There are all kinds of fringe benefits,” Watkins said. “When you arrive someplace it makes you feel like a special person.”

Love love love this yacht club on the water ! Once you get the FRONT DESK staff to warm up to ya - it's a great place for drinks at the bar !

Mr Oliver took great care of us . The head Chef came by and talked to us about some of the new dishes like Escargot and the Oysters with caviar. Jo also came by to say hello and serve us coffee! The evening made Joyce's Birthday special!

Naples Yacht club has the best food sources and the best Seafood buffet. The service is always tops. The Yorkshire pudding (Bread) is done to perfection! It ranks on top with Royal Ponciana!

Everything I have eaten here shows a well thought out approach to preparing and cooking! I love Yorkshire pudding (pop egg muffins) and even though it seems a waste their Hamburgers are the best. Eating here is Luxury at it's best! Service is always amazing!

Boaters' Grille, Naples Yacht Club, Snow Ball of Naples New Comers, 7 December 2019, 80 participants. Banquet, dancing, dinner. House red wine was awful. Filet and vegetables excellent, potatoes poor, appetizers ordinary, desert good even if coconut was difficult to chew. Good view. Service generally good, but neglectful at times, and unaware of protocol. A strange mixture of inappropriate wine glasses.

Went to dinner with my husband last night. We sat in the bar/lounge area for a PRE-dinner cocktail. Great ambiance in that area and enjoyed my French 75 ! About 40 minutes later we got up and were seated in the dining room. We could have sat outdoors facing the water and yachts but we chose to stay inside. Terrific service. Menu was great and the food was superb. This is a member only club, but with reciprocity from our country club we were able to enjoy it!! We will definitely return!!

What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

The cheapest yacht clubs charge just under $1,000 per year for membership. While this does give you access to different types of experiences, you may be disappointed by the overall amenities.

Some yacht clubs are known for their extravagant country club styles that help you to embrace a particular lifestyle. They include Olympic-sized swimming pools, state-of-the-art tennis courts, and fine dining.

Everything has a beautiful waterfront view. It can feel like you are in the middle of an idyllic paradise without ever even having to leave the shore. If this is what you can gain from the most expensive yacht clubs, you should set your expectations much lower for the cheaper yacht clubs.

The cheaper yacht clubs lack the community aspect of these exclusive options. They feature dry slips and the occasional party, but not much more.

Some of them may have the feel of a county park with some picnic benches, outdoor grills, and a moderately sized swimming pool. Expect a much more casual atmosphere when you choose to go with a cheaper yacht club.

It is even possible that they are simply “paper yacht clubs” that do not even maintain a physical building of their own.

How Much Do the Most Expensive Yacht Clubs Cost to Join?

The most expensive yacht clubs can vary a great deal in price. Most of them will cost between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. However, you can certainly find more exclusive clubs that will cost above and beyond this.

Keep in mind that these more expensive clubs generally are not open to the public. They are offered by invitation only and you must have a member sponsor you to be considered for entrance.

When you are paying for a more expensive yacht club, you should make sure that you are really going to get your money’s worth. These expensive clubs promote a certain type of elegant lifestyle.

Make sure that you are planning to take advantage of all the amenities available from one of these clubs before you sink too much money into the membership fees. The social aspect of these expensive yacht clubs is extremely important.

If you plan to simply rent a boat from time to time, you might be able to go with a cheaper yacht club.

What Is Generally Included in the Membership Fee for Yacht Clubs?

Have you been wondering why you should join a yacht club? Many potential members want to know what they can expect from their membership fees before they commit to a year-long contract. There are many advantages to signing up for a membership with a well-known yacht club.

Amenities and Activities

First and foremost, you get access to activities and cruises planned by board members. These might be various sailing activities, dinners, get-togethers, tennis matches, or other events that take up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

You also gain access to any amenities that surround the yacht club’s marina. For many programs, this means a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Several locations also offer fine dining, meeting rooms, and more.

It is like a private oasis where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Time moves slowly when you’re enjoying the amenities here.

Many yacht clubs have programs that introduce children (and adults!) to sailing. Take classes to learn more about improving your technique, sailing safety, and other important aspects of life on the open water.

Access to the Fleet

The main reason why most people join yacht clubs is to be able to rent out boats instead of purchasing their own. Joining a yacht club may give you access to an entire fleet of yachts that can be reserved for a day or weeks at a time. Some yacht clubs allow you to rent boats for up to ten days at a time.

Others do not allow you to rent out ships. They are primarily geared toward individuals who already own a yacht or will own a yacht in the future. Make sure you know the difference in advance.

Are There any Additional Costs Besides the Membership Fees?

Unfortunately, the membership fees are not the only cost associated with joining a yacht club. Most of the clubs in the United States also have a one-time initial fee that tends to cost thousands of dollars. Many will range from $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the location and the exclusivity of the yacht club.

This one-time fee should be the only additional money you pay except for fuel. Most yacht clubs do not cover the cost of the fuel used in the ship during your rental if renting is an option. Be prepared for what this could cost you.

If you cause damage to the ship, you can also expect some out-of-pocket costs. Insurance should cover the damage, but you will likely be asked to cover the cost of the deductible.

Be sure to inquire about how much you may be on the hook for before you sign up for any particular yacht club. Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced sailors. Make sure that you can afford the mishap in advance.

Is a Yacht Club Membership Right for You?

Understanding what the real cost of a yacht club membership is can be the first step toward determining if this is right for you. Many people love the luxuries available through the more expensive yacht clubs, but they may not be able to afford it. Consider what is most important in a club to you before deciding to sign on the dotted line for an annual membership.
