Trinidad & Tobago Yacht Charter - Tobago cays, Caribbean, aerial view of lush beaches and turquoise waters

Trinidad and Tobago are a colorful pair of sister islands in the Caribbean that are well known for their rich culture of dance, music, and celebrations. Their classic Caribbean atmosphere showcases turquoise waters that lap upon the golden sand and picturesque coconut trees swaying in the balmy breeze.

Look no further if you are seeking a luxury yacht charter to a destination worth celebrating; a luxury yacht charter in Trinidad & Tobago is the perfect vacation destination. These colorful sister islands are well known for their rich culture of dance, music, and celebrations. Lying northwest of Venezuela in the southern part of the Caribbean, the two islands birthed the classically Caribbean steel-drum sounds of calypso and soca; each boasts unique qualities. There are few places to have more fun during a luxury yacht charter than Trinidad & Tobago.

Both have strong ties to the United Kingdom, but African, Indian, Chinese, and French influences can be found ashore. These island nations are notably industrialized and relatively modern for their Caribbean location. Still, both maintained their pristine island beauty for you to enjoy during a Trinidad and Tobago yacht charter.

Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago

A signature of these two main islands is Carnival. Initially brought by French settlers, it has been adapted to its current form. This celebration is held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday in the Christian calendar and is widely associated with calypso and soca music. Individuals dress in costume and parade the streets dancing and playing music.  The atmosphere is festive and the party can last into the wee hours. This experience, combined with the luxurious amenities of your charter yacht, will promise an unforgettable experience filled with song and dance. Carnival defies description with pulsating music, spectacular costumes, and a euphoric atmosphere.  Bring your dancing shoes and join the party before heading to the tranquil island of Tobago for something more relaxing.

Port of Spain

When the celebrations end, Trinidad has much more to offer. Port of Spain, the island’s capital, is ripe with activity. There is an array of cultures busting to life here; you can navigate cathedrals, temples, and mosques that stand side-by-side, showcasing the true melting-pot nature of this island. Trinidad is also home to a myriad of beautiful beaches. Along the island’s north coast, you will find powdery, white sand beaches lapped by crystal clear waters that provide a stunning backdrop for relaxation during a Trinidad & Tobago yacht charter.

The island of Tobago

Smaller and less intense, Tobago is home to many treasures as well. The craggy landscape of the north is due to volcanic origin, while the southern setting is flatter and made of coralline limestone. The lush, tropical rainforest of Tobago is perfect for exploration during a Trinidad and Tobago yacht charter. Golf is a popular pastime in Tobago, which features two well-known courses, Mount Irvine Hotel Golf Course and Magdalena Grand Hotel and Golf Club. If you venture further inland, the Gasparee Caves are also a key attraction, with their blue grottos and awe-inspiring caverns.

Tobago has a very different landscape from that of its larger sister. The island is undoubtedly quieter, with more wildlife, empty beaches, and secluded coves. Buccoo Reef, a protected marine park, has fantastic snorkeling spots, and at Cotton Bay, you have the chance to see huge leatherback turtles (the nesting season is March to August). Tobago also has a lush, tropical rainforest and mangrove-fringed lagoons. Unwind and relax while receiving spa treatments at the Le Grand Courlan Resort.

Trinidad and Tobago enjoy a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. This makes it an ideal destination for sailing and outdoor activities, as the islands boast natural beauty, including lush rainforests, sandy beaches, and clear blue waters. Tobago, in particular, is known for its coral reefs and excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.

Below, we list our top reasons for a Caribbean yacht charter in Trinidad and Tobago:

Carnival Spirit

Famed for its brash and beautiful carnival spirit, the islands swap out their laid-back spirit for feathers, and the rhythm of calypso music come the week of Ash Wednesday.

Out of all the Caribbean islands, Trinidad and Tobago are said to host one of the best Carnivals in the world. Expect elaborate costumes, lashings of rum, music spilling into the street for days, drums, dancing, and parties that could raise the dead from dusk until dawn.

A Tale Of Two Islands

The beauty of choosing Trinidad and Tobago as your yacht charter destination is that you get to explore and embrace the culture and customs of two different islands.

Trinidad is all tangled mangrove swamps and lively rainforests brimming with birds, as well as a place of up-and-coming industry and action.

Tobago, on the other hand, is low-key bliss: think white sand beaches, hammocks in the breeze, and sea turtles.

Tropical Birds Of A Feather

Trinidad is a bird watchers’ paradise and boasts over two hundred sublime species of our brightly feathered friends.

From the trill of the hummingbird to the soft sound of the honeycreepers, the lush rainforests of these islands are alive with sweet-scented orchids and other wild flora, making it a haven for tropical birds. Exploring the mangroves gives you the chance to see the toucans and blue and gold macaws.

Using your yacht charter as a base, you can choose to be as adventurous or as chilled as you feel.

Foodie Heaven

When it comes to Caribbean gems of culture and cuisine, the sister islands of Trinidad and Tobago offer up a delicious menu.

Trinidad and Tobago, however, delivers a full package: from white beaches and gin-clear waters to a roaring music scene, carnival festivities, and delicious local food, the sister islands have it all.

Here are our favorite yacht charter destinations in Trinidad and Tobago:

Buccoo Reef, Tobago

Over on the calm Caribbean side of the island, Buccoo Reef offers a jaw-dropping spot for luxury yacht charters looking to dive into the blue. The snorkeling around the bountiful Buccoo Reef is sublime and the crowds can be avoided by heading out to Pigeon Point. This protected aquamarine park delivers crystal clear waters, rich coral blooms, and a plethora of bright-scaled sea creatures.

Drop anchor and spend the morning snorkeling before taking a romantic picnic back at the beach or join the social scene down at Store Bay.

Maracas Bay, Trinidad

Celebrated as one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Trinidad, this palm-fringed stretch of sand sits less than an hour north of Port of Spain.

Yacht charters should make this top of their list when seeking soft white sands to visit. Here, emerald peninsulas stretch out into the sea, the azure waters are warm and clear, and the colorful Creole culture comes alive with the fabulous food vendors who bring cold beer and bountiful bake and shark tacos to your tender.

Charlotteville

A picturesque village and anchorage famous for its natural beauty, Charlotteville is situated on the northeast coast of Tobago.

The village and its surrounding areas offer a range of eco-tourism activities: nature lovers can explore the nearby rainforests, hike to scenic viewpoints, and visit the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The nearby Pirate's Bay is a popular destination for snorkeling.

Cotton Bay, Tobago

There’s one major reason that yacht charter guests flock to the moonlit sands of Cotton Bay: the chance to see sea turtles nest on the shore.

Between the months of March and August, the yachting trail passes Turtle Beach, where you can witness giant leatherbacks protecting their precious cargo. Cotton Bay also boasts spots for swimming with drifting manta rays, along with deep dark forests where hiking trails are cool and fresh, and waterfalls invite afternoon plunges.

Chaguaramas

Located on the northwest coast of Trinidad, Chaguaramas is a popular port of call known for its sheltered harbor, natural beauty, and various amenities for sailors and boaters. Boasting a well-protected anchorage, Chaguaramas has several marinas and yacht clubs.

Surrounded by lush, tropical landscapes, the bay itself offers stunning views of the coastline and nearby islands.

For those seeking adventure, the Gasparee Caves near Chaguaramas offer a unique snorkeling opportunity to explore the limestone caves and underwater formations.

Port Of Spain, Trinidad

The bohemian colonial-style capital captures the carnival spirit of Trinidad. Those lucky enough to be on their yacht charter of Trinidad during the Monday or Tuesday before Ash Wednesday will see the city flare with feathers, glitz, and gorgeous costumes.

Even outside of Carnival, the Magnificent Seven mansions and the art galleries are worth sticking around for.

Tobago Cays

Capturing the very essence of the Caribbean, Tobago Cays is a smattering of five tiny islands boasting pristine sand beaches and incredible marine life.

Ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving, Tobago Cays are an iconic port of call – especially for the fans of Pirates of the Caribbean , as some of the movie scenes were filmed on the Petit Tabac Island on Tobago Cays.

Bocas del Dragon

"Bocas del Dragón," also known as "Dragons' Mouths," is a striking area situated on the western coast of Trinidad. Known for dramatic limestone formations and sea caves, Bocas del Dragon rock formations create a breathtaking seascape with rugged cliffs and natural arches that have been sculpted by the action of wind and waves over time.

The clear waters around Bocas del Dragón also make it a great spot for divers and snorkelers. The underwater world is teeming with marine life, and the rock formations offer a unique backdrop for underwater exploration.

Alternative Caribbean Yacht Charter Destinations

While Trinidad and Tobago offer beautiful cruising grounds, rich culture, and jaw-dropping scenery, it’s worth considering adding other Caribbean island groups to your yacht charter itinerary.

The vast area from the Leeward Islands to the Virgin Islands opens up a world of endless shimmering blue sea, stunning islands, and excellent sailing.

Leeward Islands and the Lesser Antilles

Lesser Antilles - Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados - are famous for their luxurious resorts, sandy cays, and spectacular marine life. St Lucia boasts spectacular volcanic peaks, while Martinique is popular for romantic getaways.

The Leeward Island chain, including Antigua and Barbuda, is known for its world-class sailing regattas, the glitz and glamor of Saint Barts, and the wild and tropical Anguilla is an excellent destination for luxury yacht charter guests looking to combine exquisite experiences with a touch of adventure.

Finally, the British Virgin Islands and the US Virgin Islands atop the Leeward island chain offer a combination of fine dining and a roaring social scene along romantic beaches and pristine nature.

When To Charter A Yacht In Trinidad And Tobago

Tropical throughout the year, the seasonal charters in Trinidad and Tobago mostly work around two things – carnivals and the hurricane season. Carnival season swings into life between the months of January and March. During this time, not only do you get the party spirit, but the sun is warm, and the rains are rare. From May to November, the wet season trickles in and can turn into daily downpours.

The Cost of a Caribbean Yacht Charter

Charter yachts in the Caribbean can cost anywhere from $30,000 to $500,000 per week, depending on the boat’s size, type, and capacity.

Most sailing yachts and catamarans with a capacity for 6-8 guests cost between $27,000 - $35,000 a week. Larger charter yachts cost somewhere between $55,000 - $85,000 a week, while luxury yachts may command the price of $230,000 - $550,000 a week or more.

Find Caribbean Yacht Charters That Offer the Right Features

While a Caribbean yacht charter adventure equals a dream vacation, there are several things to think of before talking to your charter expert.

For the best sailing experience, it’s important to consider the boat’s features and amenities offered onboard.

Caribbean Yacht Options

If you’re looking to entertain guests, aim for a luxury yacht with spacious cabins, plenty of deck space, and onboard pools or Jacuzzis. All about the adventure? Consider whether the boat has water toys and snorkeling equipment. Love the romance of harnessing the wind? Sailing yachts may be your best option.

The high-end features and services on board will make your sailing experience exceptional whether you're looking for peace and quiet at sea or a fun time with friends.

Here are some important things to discuss with your charter broker:

Swimming Deck

No charter in the Caribbean would be complete without being able to jump into the sea whenever you please. Look for yachts that feature large, convenient decks for easy access to that gorgeous turquoise water.

Spacious Cabins

Well-appointed, spacious cabins add to the experience of luxury sailing, especially if you're entertaining guests or friends.

Speaking of water, if you love action and adventure, consider yachts that have a selection of water toys onboard. Kayaks, jet skis, paddleboards, and snorkeling equipment are a must if you're aiming for a fun time in the sea.

Onboard Entertainment

Some yachts for charter offer additional features like movie theaters. If snuggling up to enjoy a favorite film on a calm night is your idea of relaxing, look for a boat that has a built-in cinema and a great sound system.

Do you love to stay active? Look for Caribbean yachts featuring a gym, a pool, SPA treatment rooms, or a basketball hoop on the deck.

A Touch of Luxury

Stargazing on the deck in the Caribbean is an unforgettable experience as you sail the calm waters. Why not enhance it by choosing a yacht that has a hot tub or a jacuzzi on deck to enjoy with a rum cocktail in hand when the night falls?

Trinidad And Tobago FAQs

Are yacht charters all-inclusive.

Some Caribbean yacht charters are all-inclusive, offering an experienced skipper and crew, food and drinks onboard, and personal service. Some extra fees may include fuel, supplies, mooring and docking expenses, exclusive menu items or costs of scuba diving and other activities.

How much does it cost to rent a yacht for a week in the Caribbean?

Chartering a yacht in the Caribbean costs between $25,000 - $80,000 per week, although prices vary depending on the boat’s size, type, and capacity. Sailing boats are typically less expensive, while luxury super yachts may cost between $500,000 to $1,000,000 or more.

The island is also an excellent starting point for exploring other Caribbean destinations, with Grenada, Barbados, and the Grenadines all within reach.

The island’s tropical climate makes for a pleasant sailing experience year-round, with consistent trade winds providing perfect conditions for sailing. The dry season, from January to May, is particularly enjoyable for those looking to escape colder climates.

Beyond sailing, Trinidad brims with cultural, historical, and natural attractions. What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Trinidad

Choosing between a sailing boat or catamaran for your next adventure in Trinidad can significantly influence your journey, and Yachting.Rent is here to help you make an informed decision.

Sailing boats, with their single hulls, offer a traditional and exciting sailing experience. They are well suited for experienced sailors who seek the thrill of cutting through the waves under full sail. Despite having less interior space compared to catamarans, their design allows for easy maneuverability and exciting performance. They are also a more economical choice, which makes them perfect for adventurers on a budget.

Catamarans, on the other hand, are renowned for their stability, making them a perfect choice for family vacations or groups of friends who prioritize comfort and spaciousness. With dual hulls and wide beam, they provide more interior and deck space, ideal for onboard socializing and relaxing. Catamarans also have a shallower draft than sailing boats, making it easier to access secluded coves and beaches.

Sailing conditions in Trinidad are fairly consistent, with steady trade winds and calm seas, particularly during the dry season from January to May. Both sailing boats and catamarans can navigate these waters with ease.

For those who wish to explore the vibrant marine life, both types of vessels provide different advantages. Catamarans often have trampolines on the bow where you can watch sea life up close or even sunbathe. Sailing boats, while not as spacious, provide closer contact with the water and a truly immersive sailing experience.

Yachting.Rent offers a wide range of both sailing boats and catamarans for charter in Trinidad. We ensure all our vessels are equipped with safety equipment and modern amenities, so regardless of your choice, you can be assured of a comfortable and memorable adventure. Our knowledgeable team is on hand to assist in choosing the best boat for your sailing needs, so you can enjoy the ultimate Trinidad sailing experience.

Guide to Trinidad & Tobago

Two beautiful islands, two unique superyacht experiences

Lying just off the coast of Venezuela in the Lesser Antilles group, the twin island nation of Trinidad & Tobago offers two unique Caribbean experiences - one just as captivating as the other.

The differences between these two islands are stark and make a crewed luxury yacht charter vacation here all the more enjoyable. Trinidad is a busy multicultural hub of activity varying from the smart cosmopolitan capital of the Port of Spain, which every year plays host to the Caribbean’s biggest and wildest carnival, to the nature-rich rainforests that populate its hilly interior. This modern city of skyscrapers still holds on to some of its old-world charm and international influences from the line- up of nations that have ruled the island over time, including some magnificent mosques and intricately decorated cathedrals.

Outside of the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, bird-watching is a popular pastime for visitors on Trinidad, specially in the beautiful Asa Wright Nature Centre and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary swamp, a roosting spot for thousands of scarlet ibises. Unsurprisingly, the golden sand beaches that line the coast are also part of the islands allure and between March and September leatherback turtles can be spotted finding their way on to the sands to find a nesting spot.

20 miles north of Trinidad is its smaller sibling Tobago, which offers a much different experience to superyacht visitors. It’s unspoilt landscapes and laid-back atmosphere are perfect for relaxing vacations and create an idyllic spot to spend a romantic week or two away. The island is home to the oldest rainforest in the Western Hemisphere which goes some way to demonstrating the lush, verdant scenery on offer here. The beaches are quintessentially Caribbean, covered in coconut palms and splashed by warm blue waters. For the ultimate relaxation, head over to Buccoo Reef for a soak in Nylon Pool – a shallow pool sandwiched between the ocean and a beach that is bedded by mineral rich sands.

This was a fantastic day on the water with a full 15 members in the group. The size of the boat was adequate for all of us, but I'd recommend a smaller group for a more intimate adventure. Depending on the direction of travel it can be pretty hot on the lower deck since the air flow is not through that region.

Ronnie was the consummate host. Made a beautiful day even more memorable. Highly recommend anyone looking for a fun filled, relaxing day DDI.

Captain Ronald was the best! Great communication and made it simple for my whole family to get on the boat and enjoy the ride! He was patient with us and made our trip even better ! This was our second time booking with him, highly recommend

Justin and his coworker was very awesome. Accommodating and helped with everything. The yatch was very clean and spacious for a big crowd. I would recommend Justin yatch for any ride in Port of Spain. The ride was nice and smooth. The boat is huge and just had a great time. Thank you Justin and coworker

We had an amazing day with Ronnie! He’s a great captain, welcoming host and his yacht is wonderful. Communication and scheduling with Ronnie was a breeze as well. We had a perfect day exploring Trinidad. If his yacht is available, do no hesitate to book!!!

7 of my best girlfriends and I celebrated my bachelorette in Trinidad. We had the honor of having Ronald as our beloved captain! He ensured we had an amazing time, and had a lime out by Mona’s Island. Our bachelorette trip would have not been complete without Ronald & the Whistling Wind.

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello. Henry Austin reported from London.

Claudio Lavanga is Rome-based foreign correspondent for NBC News.

Claudia Rizzo is an Italy based journalist.

Breaking news, 1 dead, 6 missing — including 2 americans — after tornado sinks yacht, the bayesian, off sicily.

A luxury superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing one passenger and leaving six others missing — including a tech tycoon known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” officials said.

The Bayesian — a 184-foot luxury sailboat with 22 people aboard — sank off the port of Porticello when it was hit by a violent storm at sunrise, the Italian coast guard said.

The coast guard deployed a team of divers to search the submerged vessel for survivors some 160 feet beneath the water’s surface, with authorities fearing some of the missing passengers could be trapped inside their rooms, BBC reported.

The passengers were reportedly from the UK, the US, Canada, Sri Lanka and Ireland.

One body, believed to belong to the ship’s chef, Canadian-born Thomas Recaldo, who had been living in Antigua, was found near the wreck, the Palermo Port Authority told CBC News.

Six others were missing as of Monday morning, including the vessel’s owner, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, sources told Reuters and  the Independent .

The last photo thought to have been taken of the yacht at 10pm on Sunday in Porticello.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, were among the missing, according to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacaras, the Telegraph reported.

Bacaras, who is the sole shareholder of the firm that owns the yacht — Isle of Man-registered Revtom Limited company — was rescued along with 14 others from the yacht.

One of the survivors, Charlotte Golunski, 35, described to Italian newspaper Giornale Di Sicilia how she and her 1-year-old daughter survived the harrowing experience.

Divers jump into the waters looking for the missing people after the storm struck the yacht.

“For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves,” she said.

“I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy. Many were screaming. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and all 11 of us managed to get on board.”

The captain was also among the survivors,  an Italian coast guard spokesperson told CNN.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing six passengers and leaving one missing.
  • British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, is still missing.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
  • A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

graphic of tragic yacht

A helicopter and rescue boats from the coast guard, carabinieri, fire rescue and civil protection service were at the scene early Monday searching for those who had not been accounted for,  according to the Australian Associated Press.

The massive yacht, the Bayesian, flies under the British flag and can reach a maximum speed of 15 knots (17 mph). It comes equipped with six cabins, including a full beam master suite, according to yacht charter websites, which list the ship as available for rent for up to $215,000 per week.

rescue

Twelve of its passengers were guests while 10 were crew.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, according to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder.

Lynch, often referred to as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” is one of the UK’s most prominent tech entrepreneurs.

He founded enterprise software firm Autonomy, which he sold for $11 billion to Hewlett Packard for $11.7 billion in 2011.

yacht

However, HP later sued Lynch claiming he overstated the value of the company, and ultimately took a $8.8 billion writedown on the purchase, later blaming “accounting irregularities” for overpaying for Autonomy.

Last year Lynch was extradited to the US to stand trial for fraud charges over HP’s allegations, but he was acquitted last June. The jaunt on the Bayesian was intended as a celebration of the tech magnate’s acquittal, according to  the Telegraph .

Lynch had invited guests from the legal firm that represented him, Clifford Chance, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage, the outlet reported.

The doomed vessel was on its way to Palermo, originally departing from Positano, a village on the southern Amalfi Coast, on July 30, according to  marinetraffic.com .

Its last docking location was in the town of Milazzo on Wednesday.

The ship’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, says on its website that the Bayesian’s aluminum mast is the tallest in the world — measuring nearly 250-feet.

Divers uncover the 6th missing body after luxury superyacht sank in freak storm off Sicily. Here's what we know about the incident.

Rescue crews recovered the sixth and final missing body off the coast of Sicily, the Italian coast guard said Friday.

It's been five days since the Bayesian, a luxury superyacht, sank after it was caught in the middle of an unexpected and violent storm. Six passengers were reported missing at the time.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who seemed to have been hosting a celebration on the yacht after being acquitted of fraud charges in June, was one of those missing. His body was recovered on Thursday.

While Italian officials did not identify the last body, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter was the only person unaccounted for.

An investigation has been launched looking into the sinking. Naval marine experts said a boat like the Bayesian should have withstood the storm. Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the company that made the Bayesian, alleged to Reuters that the shipwreck was caused by "indescribable, unreasonable errors" made by the crew and not any design or construction issues.

What happened?

The Bayesian capsized about half a mile off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village. There were 22 people on board — 12 passengers and 10 crew members. The City Council of Bagheria said in a statement that seven adults were taken to the emergency room following the rescue, but “it seems that none are in serious conditions.”

While crews searched for the remaining bodies, others are trying to confirm why the boat sank in the first place. According to a BBC report , a heavy storm hit the coast of Sicily and created waterspouts , which are tornadoes that form over water. The waterspout winds were so powerful that they broke the boat’s mast in half, causing the ship, which was anchored, to lose its balance and sink.

The U.K.’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch plans to send a team of four investigators to make a preliminary assessment of why the Bayesian sank and why people were still on board.

As the ship was going down, 15 people were able to make it to safety and were rescued by a nearby boat.

The crew on a Dutch-flagged vessel nearby noticed the yacht had disappeared and saw flares being set off in the sea. They went to help survivors before the Italian coast guard could arrive.

One British passenger, Charlotte Golunski, told reporters she kept her 1-year-old daughter alive by holding her up above the water until they got on a lifeboat.

The wreck was found around 164 feet beneath the water's surface. More than 400 people, including 28 specialist divers, were involved in the rescue efforts.

What to know about the Bayesian

Charter sites list the yacht’s weekly rent as $215,000, the Associated Press reported .

Boat International , a superyacht and luxury yacht guide, reported that the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at over 240 feet, making it one of the 50 largest sailing yachts in the world.

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, founded the software firm Autonomy and recently faced a legal battle with U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard after the tech company accused him of inflating Autonomy’s value in an $11 billion sale in 2011.

Lynch was acquitted of multiple fraud charges in June after a three-month trial, avoiding a potential 20-year jail sentence.

Seven bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

Seven people missing after British-flagged yacht capsizes in tornado off coast of Italy

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank in as little as 60 seconds with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados that form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

The yacht belonged to the family of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. He was confirmed to have died after rescuers found his body on Thursday. Mr Lynch was on holiday with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who is still missing, and his wife Angela Bacares, who was rescued.

Mr Lynch, 59, was known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The passengers were largely British and American, with crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. Divers confirmed on Thursday that their bodies had been recovered.

The yacht's captain James Cutfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, was the first to be found dead, the Italian Coastguard confirmed to Sky News.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Mr Lynch's wife.

It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, could accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck, of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications.

He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK Maritime Coastguard Agency regulations before its voyage.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

What were its last movements?

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.
