SPEAK TO A SALES PROFESSIONAL
Finding yourself slowing things down in your world due to the crazy rush of information and speed all around us? Well, then fast your gaze upon what is known as a trawler - a perfect option for those seeking all of the above points just mentioned. Please meet the well-known boat type - a trawler - which is simply a price conscious motorboat with a full-displacement, ballasted hull that possesses just that perfect cruising range for those long-ocean passages you’ll be heading out on to decompress from the never ending present day chaos.
Below are some of the well-known trawler yacht brands in the industry :
- American Tug
- Fleming Cruising Yachts
- Kadey-Krogen Yachts
- Mainship Yachts
- Marlow Yachts
- Nordhavn Yachts
- Outer Reef Yachts
- Ranger Tug Boats
As Ferrari is to sexy race cars, trawlers are to functional ‘workboat-look’ recreational boats. Yes, ‘trawler’ is a classic, non-Euro ‘look’. This lends itself to a specific so called, ‘trawler lifestyle’ which translates to a sailor’s cruising lifestyle with the power of a motorboat. Those who appreciate their boat to have excellent sea keeping skills coupled with the range to take you to far - off hideaways, are in for a real treat when setting out on a trawler. Invite your family and friends as the trawler yachts offer long-term living accommodations - perfect for desiring an ‘at anchor’ remote boat getaway. These ‘small packages with a punch’ will carry, launch, and retrieve your tender too - thanks to her efficient crane.
Listing some of the trawlers other features, such as anchor accommodations, reverse windows, a pilot house, and walk around decks for line handling and docking, you’ll find this type of boat is well equipped for leisure and fun!
So get your calendar out and block off a stretch of time, as the trawler embraces trips like those!
Once a commercial fishing boat, the trawler has evolved to meet all boater requests of this present day resembling a comfortable home with the benefit of never having to jump in and out of your car as you’ll be motoring above sea level from one port to the next sipping on your favorite island cocktail and popping shrimp cocktails! You can choose from a more basic trawler or go all out with designing one that rivals a luxury yacht with all it’s out of this world comforts.
Don’t be surprised if that block of time turns into calling your realtor to put your house on the rental market as you’ve decided to set out aboard your sweet ride on the water for months on end or even decided to drop the home and move aboard! We don’t see why you couldn’t if your spirit has been calling you out to a sea salt life as there’ll be no compromise in comfort with the trawler’s private staterooms for nights dreaming above the ocean, full galleys to prepare scrumptious fresh-caught fish dinners, and roomy galleys to gather in and share island stories. Why should long-distance cruising be any less as it’s equally important getting to your dream destination. Slow and steady, you’ll be pleased to see the fuel bill is allowing you extra funds for elaborate dinners out or that new tender you’ve been eyeing.
If you’re more of a tropical breeze cruiser, then by all means, get her ready to cruise south for the winter to extend the warm months aboard. The journey up and back on the intracoastal waterway has been traveled by many with the same idea to keep that summer warmth going! You’ll appreciate how little fuel she’ll consume and that excellent range we continue to remind you of too. Built for voyages such as these, the builders have kept the size of the engine areas to a minimal and chose displacement hulls to aid in cutting through the seas instead of sucking up tons of power. Your search for a super trawler is doable as you’ll find many to be ocean-crossing water babies. If you want the speedier versions, there are a few builders who can accommodate you in making that dream come true on your trawler too. And don’t be fearful you’ll have to give up the low fuel bills, as even the fast trawlers typically offer superior fuel economy than many different powerboat styles.
What we find our clients greatly appreciate is the trawler’s expansive cabin space even on the smaller models and some can offer aft cabins in the rear and some manufacturers pulled all stops out and in their larger models have been known to add multiple deck levels to these ever evolving sweet ‘floating packages’.
We hope you’ve come to see that there are numerous reasons many of our clients love trawlers of all sizes because you don’t always need a yacht-sized vessel to make your dreams of venturing to remote ports in comfort and efficiency a reality without exhausting the retirement savings account.

Fishing Trawler to Luxury Yacht Refit
- By Kim Kavin
- July 10, 2024
How do you turn a fishing trawler into an expedition yacht whose interior feels like a contemporary, light-filled loft?
Essentially, that was the challenge presented to the team at Vripack in the Netherlands when they signed on to help with the four-year rebuild of Scintilla Maris . The owner of the 150-foot vessel, which launched in 1988, says he was drawn to the go-anywhere sturdiness of the Dutch fishing trawler but wanted to “create something that offers optimum comfort and quality of life rather than luxury.”
At the Damen Maaskant shipyard, also in the Netherlands, the first task was to reduce Scintilla Maris’ original 570 gross tons to below the 500-gross-ton threshold that keeps vessels within a less-complicated regulatory framework. The hull was stripped back to bare metal, and the entire interior was gutted. Vripack designed new interiors built from high-pressure laminate, a tough material that is also cost-efficient and easy to maintain. Vripack also added skylights, curved feature walls—to avoid straight angles and squared edges—and a color scheme that includes reds, greens and yellows. One example of how this was done is in the full-beam owner’s stateroom amidships, where a skylight was converted from the original hatch to the fish hold.
Today, Scintilla Maris accommodates 10 guests in five en suite staterooms. There are also quarters for nine crew. Power is a hybrid-electric system to comply with stricter emission regulations, reduce the yacht’s carbon footprint, and minimize noise and vibration underway.
Look for Scintilla Maris to be out exploring the rest of this year on the waterways of Norway, Iceland and Greenland.

A Boat Owner’s Insights – Albion Trawler Yacht
A Boat Owner’s Insights – Albion Trawler Yacht
In this post of “A Boat Owner’s Insights,” we highlight a 37′ Albion Troller converted to Trawler Yacht. This Albion Trawler is for sale by Waterline Boats / Boatshed Port Townsend look for the direct link belo w.
Albion Trawler: Capable Commercial Fishing Core Combined with the Luxury of a Yacht
Imagine a vessel with the sturdy design of a commercial troller, but also the luxury and amenities of a trawler yacht – all the adventuring that could be had, while remaining cozy and comfortable! For the owner of this Albion Trawler he didn’t stop at just imagining this scenario, but turned it into reality.
To make this happen, the owner oversaw the conversion of a retired commercial salmon troller to a trawler yacht. The result is a vessel with a unique combination of capable and practical with comfortable and snug. Half the fun for him was just in the work of the conversion, though he also thoroughly enjoys fishing, shrimping and crabbing all through Washington waters on this stand-out boat.
Read on to learn more direct from the owner on the thought and effort that went into this spectacular conversion, and the on-the-water opportunities that await new owners.
From Troller to Trawler: Finding the right boat for the conversion
The owner of this Albion Trawler had previously owned a trawler and, being familiar with what that type of boat could offer, set out to find something in that style. He was looking for a vessel with, “…heavy construction, fiberglass hull suitable for two people to spend extended periods aboard but still small enough for day trips, local fishing/crabbing, etc.” When he found a retired salmon troller in Nanaimo, British Columbia it had all the basics he was looking for, and so began the journey of making it his own.
The owner, an electrician by trade, oversaw the conversion. After two years and close to $100,000 the transformation was complete. The re-build included everything from the cabin structure to the electrical and plumbing, and nearly every other component in between.
While the owner certainly has fun using the vessel, it’s also clear he enjoyed the work of the conversion itself. “I have enjoyed using the boat for the 900 hours on the engine,” he says, “but have found that I likely get greater enjoyment in the process of building/repairing/fabricating etc. Not much of that left do to on this boat.”
With that, if you are looking for a truly turn-key, very capable vessel, this is certainly your opportunity!
Cruising the Pacific Northwest
The owner has made numerous trips local to the Port Angeles area, where it’s moored, “…often to the Washington coast between Neah Bay and La Push, fishing/clamming/crabbing in the Strait of Juan de Fuca area, Hood Canal for shrimp and oysters and just messing about.” The owner reports that the boat has also been to, “…the San Juan’s, of course, and as far north as Port Hardy in British Columbia.”
Most recently the owner took friends out Coho salmon fishing in the Straits of Juan de Fuca – with excellent success.
Exceptional Performance and Notable Additions
The owner has been, “…really happy with the performance of this boat…and the reliability of all the systems aboard.” No surprise given the systems are all new, or carefully refurbished. Other reasons that make this boat stand out above the rest include:
• Fuel efficiency, it has, “…exceptionally frugal fuel consumption.” • A heavy commercial salmon troller hull. • All new yacht-grade systems and structures, while still retaining many troller features from the original design. • A single screw protected by the keel. • Freshwater cooling via a keel cooler. • Hydraulic anchor winch on the foredeck. • A bow thruster, “…for easy control while docking.” • Well-designed rail system on deck, “We were particularly attracted to the welded aluminum rail system as relates to grandchildren safety (and us too!)”
This boat is built tough enough to handle the conditions commercial fishermen face, but with all the touches of a recreational yacht. With that, this Albion Trawler offers opportunity to cruise off the beaten track, or, just as well, stand out in a popular anchorage.

Sea Trials and Final Adjustments
Embarking on the final phase of the sailboat to trawler conversion journey involves the crucial step of sea trials and making necessary final adjustments. This phase is where all the hard work and meticulous planning come together to test the trawler’s performance and functionality in real-world conditions.
During sea trials, the trawler is put through rigorous testing to evaluate its handling, speed, stability, and overall seaworthiness. This process allows for any potential issues to be identified and addressed before the trawler sets sail for its maiden voyage.
Key aspects that are assessed during sea trials include the trawler’s maneuverability in different sea conditions, responsiveness to steering, engine performance, fuel efficiency, and overall comfort of the vessel for extended journeys.
Final adjustments are made based on the observations and feedback gathered during sea trials. This may involve fine-tuning the engine settings, adjusting navigation equipment, optimizing the electrical systems, and ensuring that all safety measures are in place and functioning effectively.
