This was my first time sailing in Italy and I was beyond impressed with not only the fantastic sailing winds but also the variety of jaw-dropping scenery. As a crew, we were pleasantly surprised by the manageable sailing distances between a range of daytime and overnight anchorages and ports, which easily allows for itineraries taking in multiple stops or covering some longer passages.
While it is a more expensive destination compared with Greece, for example, it is definitely rewarding for those looking for a challenge and a change. A week is never enough to explore everything on offer in this region but the amount you can sail and see in that time makes this a perfect destination to combine a week’s charter with a week onshore relaxing, biking, or kitesurfing, all popular options for twin-centre holidays in Sardinia.
The taxi from Olbia airport to Marina di Portisco was about €55 for two people with luggage and took 20 minutes. There is provisioning in the marina minimarket, this is small but has a reasonable selection to stock up including speciality items for BBQ and a fantastic deli (as to be expected in Italy). The fresh fruit & veg selection was not great but this may be due to arriving late on a Saturday afternoon. It is also quite expensive as there is no other option nearby and there are no niche items eg. gluten-free, vegan etc. There is no delivery service but you can easily push the trolley back to the boat. I would probably recommend pre-provisioning for a large crew or late arrival.
After a busy day, there are two restaurants in the marina plus some snack bars/cafes. Food is reasonably priced and you can always just have a pizza for the cheap option!
Heading South! The full and thorough area briefing by Sergio on Sunday morning is not to be missed. Full of great local information about procedures, safe harbours, and hazards. Due to the strong winds north of the harbour on our first day, we decided to head south and take it easy. Moresca (lunch stop)
This was a pretty little bay but a bit too close to a fish farm and also busy with local “day boats” from Olbia because of the weekend.
Tavolara (overnight)
A great anchorage with lots of space, a nice sandy beach and impressive scenery. There are mooring buoys but these are for the stylish Italian speed boats so are expensive and unnecessary, holding is good for anchoring and free-swinging. I would suggest avoiding the weekends as you get a lot of day trip boats from Olbia, but they usually leave between 5-7 pm so it is very relaxing overnight. Two restaurants in the bay (one casual, one upmarket), most of their trade comes from the day trip people at lunchtime so they are not always open for dinner in the low season but if there are enough yachts they will.
Exploring La Maddalena
Setting off early we navigated around the eastern end of Tavolara to keep a clear heading north towards La Maddalena National Park. The permit for which is easily purchased in advance online. We perused many of the potential stops on route to our final destination for the evening.
Porto Cevro – Pop in
This is a very tight and exclusive marina for upmarket superyachts and elegant classic vessels. There wasn’t much going on in the early season but I am sure the atmosphere in July & August is great if you are looking for a night out in the Monaco of Italy. You can also moor on the quay or floating pontoon in nearby Porto Vecchio for a quieter (and cheaper) night.
Caprera, Porto Palma
This is a very "nice" bay, nothing overly special but the approach is easy without too many hazards, the water is good for swimming and there is lots of space and it is well protected from nearly all wind directions. You can take a buoy or anchor.
Cala di Villa marina, San Stefano
This is a tricky rocky little bay but it offers great shelter and scenery if you can get a space, it is suitable for lunch or overnight. The sculpture of Garibaldi in the rockface on the cliff is not to be missed!
Maddalena Town, Maddalena Island
This looked very large and busy so we avoided it as we were already fully stocked with food and water so there was no need for a pit-stop yet. It would be great if you need shelter as there are lots of harbour options with 4-5 different marinas/quays!
Palau, Sardinia – this looks cute from a distance, not as large as Maddalena town but still with a good number of berths and is very close/accessible for an overnight if you are struggling to get in elsewhere.
Cala Corsara, Spargi Island
At the South end of the island, this is a great lunch stop or overnight anchorage with a great beach and some fantastic scenery. All of the “day boats” and motor yachts leave around 5-6 pm when it becomes very peaceful and the local pigs frolic on the beach!
Fantastic sailing to Bonifacio, Corsica The journey from La Maddalena park area to the southern tip of Corsica is a sailor’s blue moon with the right angle and amount of wind for a perfect passage. We set off first thing and arrived by lunch to enjoy the afternoon sightseeing.
Bonifacio is incredible and definitely worth a visit. You should definitely pre-book a mooring online in advance (a few days should be sufficient) as we nearly struggled to get a space in May. The cost with power and water was approximately €70 for a 38ft monohull.
There is plenty to do, see, eat and drink in town. You can stock up on French pastries and wine but you will need to break out your French! When it's warm I recommend catching the tourist train up the hill into town and then walking back down later. There are several walking trails around the down with fantastic views so if you prefer exercise then definitely take a stroll out of town.
Lavezzi Island, France We left Bonifacio late and full of croissants so opted for an easy afternoon and overnight anchorage in nearby Lavezzi island en route back to Italian waters. While from a distance this island does not appear to offer enough shelter overnight, once inside the bay we were well-protected and comfortable. Navigation around the many rocks is a little hair-raising but quite manageable with a good look-out and there is plenty of space and good holding. As usual, the day boats disappear before sunset leaving just sailors and seagulls.
Cala Coticcio & Cala Portese Fantastic sailing again across the straits of Bonifacio, downwind this time, as we watched on in awe as a regatta of high-performance and classic sailing vessels steamed past us with ease. Stopping at Cala Coticcio for lunch is one of the most popular beaches in the Maddalena Archipelago. It is a gorgeous spot but does get quite busy and is not great for an overnight anchorage as the hills create some interesting wind gusts throughout the evening and overnight as the temperature changes. Heading just south to Cala Portese is the popular option recommended.
Cala do Volpe & Portisco Marina We spent a lazy final day ambling down the Sardinian coastline and anchoring for lunch in Cala di Volpe, a huge bay with long beaches and a perfect pit-stop before returning to Portisco marina for check-out and departure.

What better way to mark a special birthday than sailing with a group of your closest friends. We could not have chosen a more stunning, glamorous destination. Sailing from Sardinia with Boomerang Charter over to Corsica and back.
This heady mix of uniquely Sardinian & Corsican cultur e , language, wine and food delivered a celebration beyond our expectations.
Incredibly, in eight years of sailing this was the most amount of time we have spent under sail covering 149 miles and broke 8.8 knots!
A short 20 mins transfer from Olbia airport to the base at Portisco and straight onboard our Sun Odyssey 490 ‘Aurora’.
It is for good reason that the Boomerang team are consistently one of our top rated fleets in mediterranean.
‘Aurora’, as we would expect, was in immaculate condition. Boomerang maintain and clean their yachts to the highest standards but it is the thoughtful touches they provide that sets them apart especially for a special occasion. The abundant fruit basket and sparkling wine were very much appreciated.
A friendly and thorough show around the yacht and a briefing of the area was given by Sergio; useful tips, highlights and hazards all pointed out.
Our pre-provisioning was delivered by Gusto Cambusa. As a largish crew it was a good idea to have the heavier items brought straight to the yacht. A top up shop was then required in the adequate supermarket within the marina to top up with fresh fruits, salads, deli meats and cheeses.
Some obligatory bunting strung around the cockpit for the birthday boy ! and then we were lucky to be able to take advantage of our early embarkation a nd set sail .
All in all an early morning flight and a long day so we moored up not far away from Portisco and cooked a lovely meal onboard. Let’s get the party started.
Early morning and the weather looks to be fair for our first dip in the ocean followed by a hearty breakfast
The plan had been to sail to the north side of the Maddalena National Park however a squall mid passage caused us to double back.
These things happen and we found shelter in ‘Arzachena Bay’ with its impressive Neptune sculpture where we were quickly joined by dolphins to lift our spirits
There is a nice restaurant here which looked to be p opular despite the weather but we decided to cook onboard and make our own fun.
A beautiful sunny day to wake up in the wonderful Maddalena National Park is nestled between Sardinia and Corsica.
We made a brief stop at Gavetti Marina to enjoy a wander around the so pretty, venetian style streets with pastel coloured buildings. We enjoyed b outique style shopping and there were some wonderful bars and restaurants. There is also an excellent fish market right in the marina and a whopping supermarket just on the outskirts of the town.
Skipper Tim was happy that we finally managed to secure a basil plant for the cockpit.
Back on track we had a fun afternoon at Cala G Marino, a beautiful bay between Isola Razelli and Budelli. Paddleboarding, diving competitions, water hammocks and a friendly visiting Seagull.
While it is necessary to obtain a permit to visit the Madalenas in mid and high season. During our visit in early June it was not possible to advance purchase one and the authorities, although visible, did not charge us.
Like many people we had been under the impression that this exclusive area, playground of the rich & famous , would be pricey and this is undoubtedly true in the high season. However, by eating onboard (not every night !) and choosing our moorings carefully we managed to avoid costly marina fees and permits.
It was so lovely here we decided to stay overnight. More great food and hilarity and a stunning full moon.
And we head to Corsica !
Up and coming captain Gus was put through his skipper skills today! Sailed to Cala di Zeri on Ile Cavello for lunch and afternoon anchorage. An equally stunning location with fabulous holiday homes discreetly nestled amongst the rock face.
Lots of relaxing and swimming. As the afternoon progressed a flotilla of jet skis came through to dramatic effect.
Our overnight anchorage at Baie de Rondinara. There is a restaurant here that is open until around 6 o’clock. In the mornings they also provide french pastries for breakfast - mouth watering pain au chocolat, pain almond and croissant; all at such reasonable prices it would be rude not to!
Bonifacio! has to be high up the bucket list of destinations for any sailor and a place I have been longing to visit for many years.
An epic sail along the rugged coastline escorted by pods of dolphins, to the jaw dropping cut in the cliffs where the old town teeters above and leads to the historic town of Bonafacio. The entrance only visible when you are right on top of it winds it way i nto this charming, bustling harbour.
Here you will find yourself neighbours with some of the world's largest superyachts. Watching ‘‘Cocoa Bean’ mooring at the far end of the harbour with her crew of around 25 was a sight to behold.
Being early June we paid 85€ for our 49 footer which was pretty reasonable whilst this is likely to be more in the high season i s worth every euro and d efinitely not to be missed.
Climb the steep steps up to the old town to experience incredible views where you will find} plenty o f restaurants and bistro’s offering delicious french cuisine; corsican mussels, wild boar (sanglier) followed by an icecream down at the harbour to finish off the evening nicely.
The next morning some of the crew walked up to the cliff top again to take one of the nature trails - the left hand fork this time away from the town rewards you with unbelievable views of the ocean.
A good day sailing to Isola Spargi, Cala d’Alga; a relaxing lunch onboard and then an afternoon swim ashore. We were surprised and delighted to see a wild boar frollicking on the sands.
We then headed back to La Maddelena to explore this delightful town and have the obligatory team pizza night. It’s worth booking Gavatta Marina ahead of your visit as it is understandably popular, we hadn’t but found a new ish marina ‘di Punta Nera’ just a short walk over the hill into the main town.
The marina crew were very friendly and charged just €60 and the small bar serving sundowners and snacks was our perfect pre supper Sundowner spot. For a group meal we can highly recommend the rustic pizzas and jugs of very good house red wine at Il Curciareddhi - simple but delicious and well set up for larger groups.
A good day under sail back to Portisco excellent winds - 8.8 knots made it good fun for all of us . Just a couple of yachts ahead of us on the fuel pontoon then a guide was sent to bring us back to the Boomerang jetty.
Our return flight was mid afternoon. The lovely Boomerang staff were happy for luggage to be left and we were given directions to the nearest beach, a short stroll over a hill. We whiled away a few hours at the f a bulous beach bar enjoying a leisurely brunch before heading back to say farewell to o ur great f riends at the base and jump in our minibus transfer back to Olbia Airport.

Sardinia’s strong summer winds and narrow tidal range make it a favorite destination for sailors. You’ll find numerous cup competitions and regattas here, as racing sailors are attracted to the island’s famous Costa Smeralda by the strong mistrals that stir the surface of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Located in the middle of Sardinia’s exclusive ‘Emerald Coast’, Cannigione is a small resort town offering easy access to many fabulous beaches and the popular Maddalena Archipelago.
The luxury resorts, golf courses and clean, white beaches of the Costa Smeralda attract the jet-set crowd, and you can spot many famous faces in Cannigione and beyond. If you tire of rubbing shoulders with millionaires and celebrities, then Cannigione is the perfect jumping off point from which to explore Sardinia, the Maddalena Archipelago and Corsica beyond. Sardinia’s craggy coastline provides dozens of natural inlets, secluded beaches and private anchorages where you can forget your troubles, drop anchor for the day and swim the warm, inviting waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Sardinia is globally renowned for its food, and there are many excellent restaurants dotted along the coast, including several with prestigious Michelin stars. As you’d expect, Sardinian cuisine is rich in seafood such as langoustines, rock lobster and tuna, as well as wild boar, suckling pig, cheeses and the region’s distinct saffron-infused pasta.

As with other parts of the Mediterranean and Italy, the Sardinian yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have lighter winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes.
Plain sailing with all the wind you need

The island has laws prohibiting new building activities near natural and cultural sites. Wind and solar power have increased noticeably in recent years. Carlo Rubbia, Nobelist in physics, is creating an experimental solar/ thermal energy using Jatropha and Colza oils.
Rare native animals and plants
Sardinia is home to the Mediterranean Monk Seal, the Giara horse, the Albino Donkey, the Mouflon, the Sardinian Long-eared Bat, the Sardinian Deer, the Sardinian Fox, the wild boar, and the Maghreb, a skink that can reach 30 cm in length, and the Great Spotted Woodpecker.
The Famous Mediterranean Sardinian Cuisine
Sardines, rock lobster, squid, tuna, scampi, bottarga, and other seafood are predominant in Sardinian cuisine. This is fresh and simple Mediterranean seafood at its best. Also, wild boar and suckling pig are spit-roasted or boiled in bean and vegetable stews, thickened with bread. Your personal chef on your yacht will be able to gather fresh local Sardinia ingredients and create Sardinia inspired cuisine to your taste, as well as any other cooking styles your request.
Rich cultural customs still alive
Sardinians remain enthusiastic warm-hearted hosts. The native language is widely spoken on the island, as well as Italian. Sardinia is home to one of the oldest forms of vocal polyphony, known as Cantu A Tenore, which Frank Zappa and Peter Gabriel have found irresistible.
Sardinian culture is alive and well, and young people are actively involved - with carnival costumes and a unique three reed-cane instrument. Sardinia has produced notable jazz musicians such as Antonello Salis, Marcello Melis, and Paolo Fresu. Goat and sheep rearing are still important for cheese making. Crafts include rugs, jewellery, textile, lacework, basket making, and coral.
Intriguing ancient history with fascinating remnants
Sardinia has a unique heritage dating from 4000 BC - including the Phoenician sailors, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Saracen raiders, Spaniards, and African Berber pirates, famines survived on wild ferns and weeds, kidnappings, and political subversion. Much of this history is apparent from remnants and influences on the coastline and can be seen from your boat. Some of the best sites, however, require a shore trip and you can ask your captain or charter broker to organise this for you. Here are a few fascinating remnants: • Giants' Tombs – at Aiodda near Nurallao-Nuragus and Coddu Vecchiu • Nuraghe – megalithic round tower-fortresses such as at Su Nuraxi di Barumini - a UNESCO World Heritage Site • Castle - 13th century, at Acquafredda near Siliqua • Necropolis - Anghelu Ruju • Temple - Antas • Romanesque church - of Santa Maria del Regno • Catalan Gothic church - 16th century, at Assemini • Ghost villages and industrial architecture – at Argentiera • Paintings from the 15th century – at Benetutti church • Fascinating cave – at Bonu Ighinu
Sardinia has strong traditions in darts, football, and car racing. Sassari has the Mores Raceway and Cagliari has hosted Formula 3000 racing. Olbia has hosted the Rally d'Italia Sardegna in the FIA World Championship - held on narrow, twisty mountainous roads around the glamorous town of Porto Cervo.
Of course sailing is big here! Cagliari hosts regular international regattas, such the RC44 championship, the Farr 40 World championship, and the Audi MedCup. Several America's Cup contenders have been attracted here, and part of the Louis Vuitton Trophy was held in the Maddalena archipelago in 2010. Porto Pollo is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers by virtue of a western wind that accelerates between Sardinia and Corsica. In 2005, Aglientu, hosted the Kitesurf World Cup. Sa Istrumpa, also known as Sardinian Wrestling, is a traditional Sardinian sport, officially recognized by the Italian National Olympic Committee.
Sardinia is perhaps one of the most well-known places for yacht racing and superyacht regattas and the annual sailing events include the Sardinia Cup , The Pendennis Cup , the Dubois Cup , the Superyacht Regatta and more.
Inland transport
The best way to get around on a Sardinia holiday is by sea, on your own bespoke luxury private crewed charter yacht. For those who do venture inland a driver and car can be organised to pick you up from your yacht. Sardinia has a system of dual carriage freeways that connect the main towns and transport infrastructures with a relaxed speed limit of 90 km/h. The secondary inland and mountain roads get narrow with many hairpin turns. With a low population density, the smallest territories are reachable only by car. Trains also connect the whole island.
Your Sardinia yacht charter vacation – with yacht rental or crewed yacht – can take you anywhere around this jewel of the Mediterranean. A wide range of superyachts, luxury yachts, and charter yachts is available to suit your needs.
Find out more about the wealth of gorgeous, spectacular, and fascinating places you can start your Sardinia yacht charter holiday from:

We really appreciated the cruise. Crew and food was excellent. The captain manages very well the boat. We had plenty of good times - diving, kite surf and many activities.... We are very happy and thanks for organising the good weather too! S.B from Switzerland chartered in Sardinia Aug.

Take a sailing journey along the pink granite coastline of this fascinating Italian island: relax and explore, enjoy the mouth-watering cuisine and excellent wines, and learn about Sardinia's 4000-year history and traditions. Sardinia with its many offshore islands is a place of dazzling white beaches and sheltered coves backed by rugged hills and farmland cultivated through the ages and all surrounded by emerald green waters.
For years Sardinia has attracted recreational sailors for its steady breezes that make yachting a popular sport on the island, and it's increasingly one of the Mediterranean's 'go to' charter holiday sailing destinations. There’s a well-developed sailing industry infrastructure, with many modern marinas around the coast. Alternate your overnight stops between the convenience of tying up in town and the freedom of dropping anchor in one of countless beautiful coves, and have a very special Italian summer holiday.
A yacht charter in northern Sardinia can also include a part of France, with the equally enticing Corsica lying just to the north.
Sardinia is well served by yacht charter bases. Your first challenge is to decide your point of entry and where, among all the choices, you want your charter to take you. Airports at Olbia and Cagliari provide regular services from Europe, with Alghero in the west another option, particularly if combining your charter with a road trip.
Northern Sardinia is the most popular sailing charter destination, with its Costa Smeralda, Maddalena Archipelago and proximity to Corsica. Towns with charter bases include Olbia, Cannigione and Portisco, to name just three, any one of which is worth spending some time in and around before you set sail.
You’ll want to spend some time exploring La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, where visiting with your own boat/accommodation gives you a huge advantage over day travelers. These islands are simply charming, despite their popularity, where you can enjoy days of excellent sailing and holiday fun.
Back on the mainland coast, cruise the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast) and call in at Porto Cervo at the heart of this wealthy part of Sardinia, used for centuries as a meeting point for sailors from near and far. The beaches are the main attraction along tis coast, but there are numerous options for excursions and other activities if looking for adventure as well as holiday relaxation.
Just 20km north of La Maddelina National Park is the French island of Corsica and the port of Bonifacio. This stunning "City of Cliffs" is not to be missed if travelling in the area!
Southern Sardinia is considered a separate cruising ground on a seven day charter - the island stretches some 250km from top to bottom. Marinas at Cagliari (Sardinia’s largest city and capital) and the island municipalities of Carloforte and Sant'Antioco provide options for sailing the region, an equally enjoyable - and quieter - alternative to the north. Exploring the coastline around Chia, with its picture-perfect sandy beaches.
Arbatax on the east coast opens up further options, particularly for an extended cruise north and south.
We had a great time in the Aeolian Islands, and I highly recommend them as a destination. The beauty is that the islands each have a different character and are close to each other. The longest ‘passage’ is about 10 miles, and some are a lot shorter. Two of the largest islands, Vulcano and Lipari, are only 800m apart, but very different! The marinas are well located and were reasonably priced (€70-100 per night) and at Panarea there are only moorings but for €70 you also get a 24/7 water taxi service which was perfect. We found mid / late July to be superb. David, New Zealand, Aug 16th, 2019
Rating: 5 / 5 We found the boat to be nicely designed and very comfortable. The sails were near new and a treat to sail with. The highlight destination was Capri where because of unsettled weather we stayed in the marina. We found a brilliant restaurant in Ana-Capri and enjoyed strolling the narrow streets. San Michelle villa was delightful. Service was 10/10. Mario at the marina went out of his way to help us with ideas advice and making sure we wanted for nothing. Peter, New Zealand, Oct 24th, 2018
Rating: 5 / 5 The cat performed well with everything working as expected. The only issue was batteries not lasting a night and having to run an engine both in the morning and again in the late afternoon when sailing and not motoring. Sails were easy enough to hoist and the electronics worked well. Lipari was a great spot to stop with a nice town to explore. But the nicest island I found was Panarea. Less tourists with very friendly locals. James, Australia, Jul 22nd, 2018
Rating: 4 / 5 The Aeolian islands are a beautiful part of the world with many highlights. The standout was watching Stromboli erupt at night from nearby offshore. Sail Connections service was as always excellent. Russell, Australia, Jul 16th, 2018
Just a quick note to say we had a fabulous holiday and fantastic charter. The boat was perfect and the skipper Salvo and hostess Lucia were excellent could not fault anything. Salvo took us to some amazing places, always had our comfort and safety in mind, and was a lovely guy, Lucia was an amazing cook we ended up having most of our meals on board she was so good, also great company and very friendly and helpful. Everyone at North Sardinia Sail were also helpful and very friendly. Tony, Australia, Aug 31st, 2016

On our 2018 Mediterranean charter we made a spot decision to spend time in Sicily. We chose to sail out of Palermo, a convenient base for going east to the Aeolian Islands or west and south the same distance to the Egadi Islands. But the main factor was a near-new Oceanis 38 available just 3 days out from charter.
After an uneventful passage from Villefranche-sur-Mer to Corsica, a 95 nautical mile passage to the port of Calvi, we had nine days to deliver our boat to its Ajaccio base. Just enough time to explore Corsica’s west coast and visit northern Sardinia, as long as we kept moving

Catamarans turn out to be the first choice for yacht charters in Sardinia for their exceptional stability with dual-hulled support. Besides, catamarans are also designed and created for experiencing magnificence with their expansive decks and huge masts. Thanks to its barely-moving waters, the Mediterranean climate is ideal, while faring in the sea can be hugely satisfying for peace-seeking souls. Go for a bareboat catamaran if you enjoy sailing in privacy.
But pay attention, the coastline around Sardinia is also rocky and uneven at places. Hence, our suggestion for a relaxing voyage in this part of the Mediterranean is to hire a crewed catamaran. It will ensure you do not have to worry about navigating, sailing, or maintaining direction. On the other hand, you can also experience the best of Sardinian food with our seasoned chefs while onboard the yacht, along with a host of luxury assistance from the accompanying crew on your boat in Sardinia .
Sailboats give you a tremendous languid maritime experience. Take the sailing wheel and cut through the northwestern winds with our bareboat services. While sailing towards Caprera, you will enjoy northern winds of high intensity throughout the 4-hour trail, making it a delightful Mediterranean experience.
Caprera is more of a national park with exotic flora and fauna to witness. It comprises a group of 63 islands and islets, with only Caprera and Magdalena having human habitation. After some exploration on the three Virgin Islands, you can head straight to the last one on the list; Bonifacio in Corsica, some 22 nautical miles away. Choosing between a crewed motor yacht and a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences, budget, and the experience you’re seeking.
Motor yachts offer several advantages that appeal to many travellers. They provide greater speed and agility, allowing you to cover more distance along Sardinia’s coastline in less time. With their luxurious amenities, spacious interiors, and onboard chefs, motor yachts offer unparalleled comfort and indulgence. Their stability in choppy waters and ease of handling make them suitable for guests who prioritize a smooth sailing experience or have limited sailing experience.
On the other hand, sailing yachts offer a more authentic and serene sailing experience. With their reliance on wind power rather than engines, sailing yachts provide a quieter and more intimate atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of Sardinia’s coastline. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance with their classic designs and billowing sails, appealing to travelers seeking an authentic maritime adventure. Additionally, eco-conscious travellers often prefer sailing vessels due to their lower environmental impact and reliance on renewable energy.
Ultimately, choosing a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences and desired level of comfort. Both options offer their own unique advantages and can provide an unforgettable journey along the breathtaking coastline of Sardinia.

Sardinia is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a part of the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of the Italian Peninsula and just south of the French island of Corsica. It is an autonomous region of Italy and boasts over 1,850 kilometers (1,150 miles) of coastline, featuring stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs. Sardinia is surrounded by smaller islands and archipelagos, such as the Maddalena Archipelago to the northeast, offering additional exploration and discovery opportunities on your own private yacht charter. These islands often have secluded beaches, hidden caves, and charming villages to explore.
Sardinia’s coastline boasts miles of superlative beaches and secret grottos only accessible by boat. Porto Cervo is at the region’s main center, home to Costa Smeralda. This area has become increasingly desirable for luxury yacht charters because of its remote location and exclusive atmosphere. South of Porto Cervo, you will find forested mountains, medieval villages, and stunning seas. Another recommended site is La Maddalena National Park, a marine reserve that offers opportunities for secluded anchorages and overnight stays. Spotted with seven main islands and many islets, La Maddalena offers crystal-clear waters for an afternoon snorkel and access to the beautiful pink sand beach named Pink of Budelli. Sardinia’s coastal cuisine differs from inland; the seafood base and pasta dishes pay homage to the sea and further contribute to the laidback yet luxurious atmosphere of the island.
The best time to hop on a yacht and explore Sardinia is usually in the summer, from June to September. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for soaking up the sun and diving into the crystal-clear waters. Remember that summer is popular with yacht charter guests and tourists, so planning ahead and booking early is advisable. Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are great options for Charter guests who prefer fewer crowds. You’ll still get lovely weather and plenty of chances to enjoy the island’s beauty without the hustle and bustle of peak season. So, whether you’re aiming for exciting summer adventures or a more relaxed experience, there’s a perfect time for a Sardinia yacht adventure to fit your preferences.
Yes, absolutely! One of the great advantages of chartering a yacht in Sardinia is the opportunity to explore other destinations in the Mediterranean. Just a short sail away from northern Sardinia, Corsica offers stunning landscapes, picturesque towns, and pristine beaches. Explore the historic port city of Bonifacio, relax on the beautiful beaches of Porto-Vecchio, or hike in the rugged mountains of the interior.
Sail along the west coast of Italy to visit the breathtaking Amalfi Coast , known for its dramatic cliffs, colorful villages, and Mediterranean charm. Explore the picturesque towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, and enjoy the stunning views of the coastline from the deck of your yacht.
Located off the northern coast of Sicily, the Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago known for their natural beauty and unique landscapes. Visit the island of Stromboli to see its active volcano, explore the picturesque town of Lipari, or relax on the secluded beaches of Panarea and Salina.
Cruise along the French Riviera to visit glamorous destinations such as Saint-Tropez, Cannes, and Monaco . Enjoy world-class shopping, dining, and nightlife, and soak up the sun on the famous beaches of the Côte d’Azur.
Head south from Sardinia to explore the island of Sicily , known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and stunning coastline. Visit historic cities such as Palermo, Syracuse, and Taormina, and sample the delicious Sicilian cuisine.

Before you set sail on your idyllic Sardinia yacht charter, you may want to choose an itinerary to follow. With The Moorings, you have the choice to create your own bespoke itinerary or follow one of our carefully curated agendas.
Porto cervo.
Situated in an inlet at the base of beautiful hills, Porto Cervo is a modern resort fashioned to fit the vision of the wealthy entrepreneurs who dreamed of establishing the northeast coast of Sardinia as a luxury vacation destination. By all accounts it has lived up to expectations. The harbor is often called the centerpiece of the Emerald Coast, with its 4- and 5-star resorts and hotels, and its designer boutiques, upscale restaurants, and exclusive nightclubs. The village is in the Old Port, Porto Vecchio, on the southeastern side of the harbor, and the Porto Cervo Spa with its outstanding yachting amenities is on the northern side of the harbor. There’s easy access to all amenities since the entire complex isn’t that big, though Porto Cervo is indeed the jewel of the overall 7,500-acre Costa Smeralda development that also includes a host of private villas. Sailing in Porto Cervo waters is simultaneously beautiful for its scenery and lavishly indulgent for all the amenities available at this premier yachting destination.
Moorings are available. There is room to anchor in the outer reaches of the harbor.
Dinghy dockage: Dinghy dockage is available.
Peach, cream, and white stucco buildings with red terracotta-tile roofs occupy the slopes overlooking the harbor of Porto Cervo, giving the village a look distinctly evocative of the Mediterranean. The Piazzetta, or village square, is closed to vehicular traffic and is the hub of the port. Exploring the narrow streets extending from it immerses you in the upscale ambience as you browse in boutiques and jewelry stores featuring the big names in high-end products such as Gucci, Cartier, and Bulgari. The restaurants and cafés in and around the Piazzetta are excellent, and at night live music and dancing is exceedingly popular at the tony nightclubs. Porto Cervo proper has no beaches, but on either side of the harbor are superb white-sand beaches stretching for miles. Anchoring off them for a day stop in settled weather isn’t a problem, particularly because you’ll be in the lee of the land in the prevailing northwest winds. Porto Cervo is home to the famous Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, which hosts many regattas throughout the sailing season.
No facilities for yachts are available.
For centuries the rural farms and tiny villages at the northeast end of Sardinia remained a sleepy outpost in Italy’s satellite islands. But all that began to change in the early 1960s when a handful of wealthy entrepreneurs saw the apparent hinterland as a beautiful place to build exclusive resorts. The white-sand beaches, brilliant blue sea, the unusual pink colour of the sheer cliffs, the sprinkling of deserted isles home to nothing but graceful seabirds, it all seemed an ideal setting for a wonderful vacation. The businessmen poured ample cash into the development of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo and the surrounding villas and resorts, hiring some of Europe’s most talented artists to design the public squares, churches, and other structures. The world’s elite fell in love with what is now known as the Emerald Coast, where luxury yachts crowd the harbors and glide over the shimmering sea.
No moorings are available. No anchorage is available in this small harbor.
Dinghy dockage: No dinghy dockage is available.
The village of Porto Rotondo spreads out around the shores of the cove, picturesque and decidedly upscale. A stroll to the center of the town takes you to the public squares. San Marco Square is constructed of locally quarried granite and was designed by the renowned sculptor Andrea Cascella. The Church of St. Lorenzo, itself an architectural icon, houses more than 2,000 wooden sculptures by Mario Cerioli, who is said to have worked on them for seven years. Live musical performances in the stately granite amphitheatre are a delight, if you are lucky enough to attend one. The miles of white-sand beaches are another major attraction of Porto Rotondo, where all kinds of watersports are popular. Rental cars are available for inland excursions to the archaeological sites such as the Li Muri Necropolis and the Tomb of the Giants of Li Loughi.
Dockage and all other facilities for yachts are available. Advance reservations are essential.
The Maddalena Archipelago National Park and Marine Reserve was a busy shipping center in Roman times, as far back as 200 B.C. and possibly earlier. Over the centuries wrecks have accumulated in great number, presenting a rich and varied display of ships through the ages. The waters are outstandingly clear and much of the seafloor is covered in white sand interspersed with intriguing granite formations, tunnels, canyons, caves, and steep drop-offs that make ideal habitats for marine life, including the colorful red sea fans so common in the archipelago. Off Caprera’s Galera Point is an abundance of shipwrecks at depths of less than 60 feet that date back to the Roman period. More than 40 dive sites pepper the waters. At least 18 of them are along Caprera’s east coast. Dive centers in nearby Palau offer excursions for all skill levels, a truly memorable way to experience a special facet of a Sardinia sailing vacation.
Mortorio and neighboring Soffi Island are among the smaller isles of the Maddalena Archipelago National Park and Marine Reserve. Located within an easy sail of Porto Rotondo or Porto Cervo, they make an excellent day stop or an overnight anchorage. Totally uninhabited, wind-swept, and rugged, these islands are a natural habitat for all manner of seabirds. You can watch them wheel and dive along the sandy shores, and beyond are the cliffs of the Sardinian coast, grand and awe-inspiring in their breathtaking beauty. Sailing in Mortorio waters allows you to experience the other side of the Emerald Coast, the one where Nature is supreme.
No moorings are available.
Exploring ashore to observe the wildlife and climb the hills to admire the spectacular views is a delightful way to spend an afternoon. Bringing along a picnic lunch and a cool bottle of vino adds to the pleasure. The beaches on both islands are extensive, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing.
Except for a resort at Garibaldi Bay, Caprera Island is nearly devoid of development. There are a few bungalows, a shop or two, but the natural beauty is held paramount over tourism. In fact, at the height of the summer season officials limit the number of vehicles allowed on the island’s roads. Flocks of royal seagulls and cormorants, and solitary peregrine falcons soar overhead. In the interior of this 10-square-mile island, Monte Tejalone rises 695 feet above sea level, dominating the skyline of neighboring Maddalena and its smaller peaks. Because of the steady and sometimes strong winds funneling in from the Strait of Bonifacio sailing in Caprera waters is some of the best in the Mediterranean, which is why the most rigorous sailing school in Italy, The Sailing Centre of Caprera, is based on the southwest side of the island. Beaches, coves, and bays abound, making sailing on Caprera Island a delight.
No moorings are available. Among the best anchorages are the fjord-like Cala Coticcio and Cala Portese on the southeast side of the island.
Dinghy dockage: No dinghy dockage is available, but landing the dinghy is easy in the many coves for exploring ashore.
A visit to the Garibaldi Museum is a highlight of sailing Caprera. Hiking in the hills and along the many beaches is a delight, and for those interested in a longer walk, treking the road built on the dam connecting Caprera to Maddalena is a unique experience, like being in the middle of the sea while still on foot. Snorkeling and swimming is superb at Caprera, which is also one of the premier scuba diving sites in Italy. Dive excursions to view the many Roman shipwrecks and natural granite bottom features teeming with red sea fans and sea creatures can easily be arranged.
The island of Caprera was once home to Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi, who fought for many years in the 19th century for the creation of a unified and independent Italian kingdom, which ultimately came to pass in 1870 when the formerly separate Papal States were incorporated into a single Italian government. Garibaldi loved the sea and he was particularly fond of Caprera. He built an elegant home adjacent to Garibaldi Bay, which is now a museum. Paintings, war memorabilia, original furnishings, and sundry artifacts are on display, including the boats he used while enjoying leisure time on the island. A visit to Garibaldi’s home will provide insights into a man sometimes referred to as the Italian George Washington. He died on Caprera in 1882.
When you go sailing in Maddalena waters, you enter a pristine natural world of incredible beauty. Everywhere are islands, rocky and rugged. The white sails of local yachts stand in stark relief against the blue sea as the sleek boats heel in the steady winds from the northwest. In the lees of the islands are superlative coves and bays well protected and picturesque. In short, sailing Maddalena is an experience you must enjoy firsthand to fully comprehend its majestic beauty and inspiring adventure. Because Maddalena is a tourist destination with ferry service from the main island, the port of Cala Gavetta is home to a small town with some shops, and a few restaurants and bars. You can opt for a dash of civilization, albeit in a very laid-back and somewhat rustic fashion, or you can go for more of the unspoiled natural setting the marine park has to offer by sailing to the many bays and coves along the extensive coast of this 12-square-mile jewel of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
No moorings are available. The main harbor is Cala Gavetta on the south side of the island. There are many excellent anchorages at Maddalena Island. Cala Francese is a favorite and provides good protection from easterly and northerly winds. Other excellent choices for anchorages include the deep cove of Stagno Torto, Cala Portolungo, and Calla dello Spalmatore.
As with neighboring Caprera, exploring the many coves and bays is a highlight of sailing Maddalena. The swimming and snorkeling is excellent, as is the scuba diving. Spending time in the small port of Gavetta to stroll the narrow streets and browse through the shops, where you can buy handicrafts, jewelry, and other items made by local artisans, is a laid-back way to pass the time. Enjoying dinner at one of the intimate cafés or restaurants, or sipping a cocktail aboard your yacht in a scenic anchorage is a wonderful way to savor the delights of Maddalena.
Fuel and water are available at Cala Gavetta. Dockage is also available. Advance reservations are essential.
Shaped roughly like a triangle, the 12-square-mile Maddalena Island is the largest in the marine park, which has more than 700 species of plants, many unique to the area. Interesting and rare creatures also live in the park, like the darling little lizard, gecko emidattilo, and the Hermann tortoise. They are both endemic to the islands. Vast numbers of dolphins come to the surrounding waters to breed, and land and seabirds on the trans-Sahara migratory route use the main islands and 55 islets as a resting and breeding ground. Only three of the islands are inhabited, with much of the limited development isolated to Maddalena. According to UNESCO, the ecosystem of the islands has little changed from the way it was in the 19th century. A Sardinia sailing vacation presents an attractive opportunity to experience a place where Nature is cherished and preserved.
Sailing in Cannigione waters brings you deep into the Gulf of Arzachena on the northeast coast of Sardinia. The gulf is shaped much a like a fjord and offers similar beauty. Rocky hills front each side, creating a rugged and yet scenic backdrop to the shimmering blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Moorings base in Sardinia is situated on the west side of the gulf near the port of Cannigione, a small and quiet resort town with a laid-back ambience far different from what you’ll find when you head southward along the Emerald Coast to bustling Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo. And that’s part of the charm of Cannigione yacht charter.
No moorings are available. There are many pretty anchorages near Cannigione.
Cannigione is about a one-hour drive from Olbia, one of the major communities in northern Sardinia, and it’s close to the Emerald Coast and the mountains of Gallura. Along the waterfront you’ll find a number of interesting shops and superb restaurants. There’s also a pleasant beach within walking distance, where you can take a refreshing swim or simply relax and admire the scenery. The body of a man recovered near the Bayesian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat
Six people are still missing after British luxury yacht sank off Sicily on Monday
They include Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer , his wife Judy, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and jewellery designer Neda Morvillo
Divers are struggling to reach the cabins of the yacht, with a "world of objects" blocking access to the rooms
Of the 22 people on board, 15 survived, six are missing, and one body, believed to be Recaldo Thomas, has been found
Edited by Sean Seddon, with Mark Lowen reporting from Sicily
Search crews say their efforts to recover the six people still not accounted for after a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday will "continue without stopping".
As the second day of that operation comes to close, here's what we have learned:
We're going to pause our coverage now but you can read more about the second day of the Bayesian search operation here .

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch is still missing alongside his 18-year-old daughter
Six people remain unaccounted for after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, including a father and daughter, as well as two married couples.
UK businessman Mike Lynch, who helped establish Cambridge Neurodynamics and co-founded the firm Autonomy, is still missing alongside his daughter Hannah Lynch , an 18-year-old student.
Jonathan Bloomer , the chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank International, and his wife Judy Bloomer were also on the yacht when it sank and have not yet been found.
Chris Morvillo , a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewellery designer, have also been confirmed as missing.
Earlier we reported that the body of a man recovered near the sunken Sicilian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas , a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat.
His friends have described him as having "a smile that lit up the room".
Jonathan and Judy Bloomer - who are still missing following the sinking of the Bayesian yacht - are “incredibly generous people”, the reverend of their local church says.
Speaking to BBC South East, Rev Tim Edwards, from Knockholt in Kent, says “at the moment there’s an awful lot that we don’t know”.
He describes the couple as being “very much” part of the village community and active with local charities.
According to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder, the Bayesian left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor".
Witnesses later described seeing a waterspout form during a storm that hit in the area overnight, and - as mentioned in our last post - it is believed to have struck the yacht before it sank.
Most are familiar with what tornadoes look like - they are rotating columns of destructive winds, protruding from the base of clouds down to the ground. According to BBC Weather, waterspouts are just that too, but they form over water rather than land.
Instead of dust and debris swirling around the core of strong winds, it is water mist whipped up from the surface.
Like tornadoes, most are only short-lived, narrow columns and are not easily picked out on weather radars, so many will go unreported.
It is believed the Bayesian was struck by a tornado over the water - otherwise known as a waterspout - causing the luxury yacht to capsize and sink to the seabed.
There are separate reports the boat's mast snapped during the freak storm, while other factors in the boat's tipping over could include water entering through hatches and doors which might have been left open because of warm weather off the Italian coast.
Another one of Mike Lynch's friends has been telling the BBC a bit more about their neighbour's personality.
"He is so approachable and a very easy person to talk to," Richard Smith, who lives in the Suffolk village of Pettistree, says. "A nice sense of humour."
"You might think with all that money that he would be a difficult person to talk to, but in fact he was a very easy person to talk to."
One of Mike Lynch's neighbours says she was "horrified" to find out he was missing and describes it as the "worst news".
"I just couldn't believe it, I thought this can't be right," Ruth Leigh, of Pettistree in Suffolk, says.
Leigh says they have lived near each other for around 15 years and describes Lynch as a "fantastic neighbour" and a "very charitable man".
"Even though he was incredibly wealthy and a very important person he never ever gave that impression.
"Whenever he met you he always remembers your name, he would chat to you - incredibly friendly and down to earth, which we thought was a great quality," she adds.

There has been speculation about the type of keel on the Bayesian and whether it may have been a factor in it sinking.
The website for Perini Navi – the yacht’s builder – is currently not available. However, by searching internet archives BBC Verify has obtained the boat’s 2018 brochure.
In the “features and performance” section, the document gives dimensions for the keel in an "up" position - 4.05m (13ft) - and in a "down" position - 9.83m (32ft) - suggesting it is retractable.
The BBC has contacted Perini Navi but has not had a reply.
A keel is a support structure underneath the boat which projects downwards and helps keep it balanced on the surface.
Certain boats might require a retractable keel in order to enter shallow water without getting stuck.
We don’t know if the Bayesian’s keel was up or down at the time it was struck by a storm.
However, Andrew Fairbrass who runs a large yacht engineering business says “when you're sailing, you have to keep the keel down and it does make a big difference to stability”.
The Italian coastguard has confirmed the name of another crew member who survived the sinking of the Bayesian.
Leo Eppel was on board the yacht when it capsized, spokesman Vincenzo Zagarola says.
Two other surviving crew members were named by authorities a short while ago .
The BBC understands that Recaldo Thomas, who worked as a chef on the boat, was killed and his body has been recovered.
You can read tributes to the Canadian-Antiguan national here .
In cloudy skies and on choppy waters, the search has gone on all day, a helicopter scouring the site where the Bayesian capsized as divers plunged deep below.
They’re trying to access the wreckage of the yacht that was hit by a tornado-like waterspout, and is now 50m (164ft) underwater.
Given the depth, each dive can only be 10 minutes, and with the boat still largely intact it’s hard to get access inside.
British investigators are now here to assess what happened during the extreme weather that hit the Bayesian.
Severe heat and violent storms had prompted a weather alert before the yacht went down.
Tonight the search goes on - but any hope of a Mediterranean miracle survival has all but vanished.
Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer
Jonathan Bloomer's twin brother has told the BBC his family are "coping the best we can" as rescue workers continue to search for him off the coast of Sicily.
The banker is one of six people still missing since the Bayesian yacht capsized.
Jeremy Bloomer tells the BBC he has not received any new updates on the search efforts to find Jonathan, beyond that divers are struggling to access the wreck of the boat.
He says: "It's a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don't know."
Jeremy continues: "He was my older [brother] by half an hour. So it means a lot when you lose a twin brother. It's still wait and see, so fingers crossed."
Asked how he was coping, he says the situation is "terrible" and something that's "beyond your wildest imagination".
Quote Message I'm just numb, just numb. That's it, you don't know what to think and you can't believe it's happened."
We've just heard from the Italian coastguard, which has named two more survivors of the yacht sinking.
South African nationals Leah Randall and Katja Chicken, who worked as crew members on the Bayesian, managed to get to safety after the vessel sank in the early hours of Monday morning.
In total , 15 of the 22 people on board have been rescued . Among them are:
Twelve people were vacationing on Mike Lynch 's yacht, alongside 10 crew members, when it sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily. The gathering was reportedly a celebration.
Earlier this year, Lynch was cleared of fraud and conspiracy charges arising from the sale of his firm Autonomy to US tech giant Hewlett Packard. The decade-long legal battle had led to Lynch's extradition from the UK.
Upon being cleared of the charges in June, the British entrepreneur said he was "elated" and thanked his legal team for their "tireless work". Some of them were on the yacht alongside him when it sank.
Chris Morvillo , a lawyer for Clifford Chance - the law firm that represented Lynch - is among the six people still missing. So is his wife Neda Morvillo , an American jewellery designer.
Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at the same law firm, also worked on Lynch's case. Both she and her partner were invited to the yacht and were rescued when it sank.
Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer - who appeared as a defence witness for Lynch during his trial - and his wife Judy Bloomer were on the boat when disaster struck. Both are unaccounted for.
Charlotte Golunski, the board director of Luminance - an artificial intelligence platform founded by Lynch - was on board, along with her husband and one-year-old daughter. All three survived.
Lynch's wife Angela Bacares and daughter Hannah were also there. Bacares has been rescued but 18-year-old Hannah is still missing.
A search and rescue operation, which includes boats scouring the surface of the sea and divers examining the wreck of the Bayesian yacht on the seabed, is still ongoing.
As we've been reporting, the specialist diving team have been struggling to access the cabins on the wreck - which is around 50m below the surface - because of debris blocking access.
The body of a man recovered near the Bayesian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat.
His friends have been paying tribute to him. Gareth Williams, who lives in Antigua, knew Thomas for 30 years.
"I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit," he told me.
The two grew up together in Antigua, where Recaldo spent his time during off-season.
"He would come over to mine over the weekend and he would sing. He had the deepest, most sultry voice in the world, and a smile that lit up the room.
"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house. He loved yachting, but he was tired."
Eli Fuller met Recaldo some 25 years ago while out socialising in Antigua.
"He knew everybody and was friends with everybody. He'd always ask how you were doing, how your family was - he was always positive.
"Personality was very important in his job. The world's richest people want to hang out with someone social. He was sought after."
He added that Thomas became an inspiration to young black children who wanted to get into yachting.
"The kids would see all these white people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man travelling all over the world - it was important for our community."
The search for the missing six passengers "continues without stopping" but divers have not found anything, the Italian coastguard says.
The coastguard says that specialist divers are "evaluating the feasibility of safely entering the wreck", but that the search is being "complicated by the depth and the position of the hull lying on the seabed" - at 50m below the surface.
It adds there is no trace of "hydrocarbon pollution" - meaning oil or other similar fuel is not leaking from the wreck.
We're well into the second day of search and rescue operations for the six people still missing after the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.
Here are some of the factors which make this a highly complex process:
Helen Burchell Live reporter
Lord Deben says his friend Mike Lynch is "wonderfully kind and companionable"
Lord Deben, former Conservative MP John Gummer, describes his missing friend Mike Lynch as "a wonderfully kind and companionable" man.
"He is the kind of person who carries this enormously clever mind, but carries it so lightly, and is always interested in what others have to say and might contribute," he says in a statement.
"It is a very serious moment... for if we have lost him, we’ve lost a very wonderful man."
He adds: "It is one of the cruellest blows that could possibly be made if it turns out that he hasn’t survived because he had so much to give, and he was giving it.
"This is a man of outstanding ability, but also the sort of person whom we were all very, very fortunate to know."
Dr Simon Boxall is a senior lecturer at Southampton University
Dr Simon Boxall, an oceanographer from the University of Southampton, says "there's a lot still to be discovered" about what led to the sinking of the Bayesian.
Asked about reports the boat may have been hit by a waterspout , he tells the BBC they are "not normally dangerous" but that would depend on the intensity of the weather system.
Boxall says: "What's interesting is that we saw very light winds up until the time at which the yacht was hit.
"And then suddenly, the wind went from about three or four miles an hour to 30 or 40 miles an hour, and then dropped again. And that was on land.
"So it's a sort of precursor to there being a major sort of squall or even a waterspout that would have hit the ship."
The ocean to the north of Sicily is more than three degrees warmer than it should be at this time of year, he adds, creating a "perfect storm" for waterspouts to occur.
The captain of the Dutch-flagged ship that rescued Bayesian passengers from the water before emergency services arrived has spoken again to Reuters.
Captain Karsten Borner has previously explained how he worked to keep his ship upright during the storm, before noticing the luxury yacht that had been behind his vessel had disappeared.
"I don't absolutely know what they did. I only know that they went flat with a mast on the water and that they sank in two minutes," Borner says.
He says the sea temperature, which meteorologists have told us was at an extreme high of 30C, is "way too hot for the Mediterranean, and this causes, for sure, heavy storms".
