154' Perini Navi 2026

After The Italian Sea Group SpA completed the acquisition of Perini Navi SpA, we are pleased to unveil the new sailing superyacht yacht from the world-renowned Perini Navi brand, which is currently under construction, at the Perini Navi shipyard in Viareggio.

With aluminium hull already completed, the new generation sloop-rigged PERINI NAVI 47M S/Y for sale measures 154’ 2” in overall length. This sailing superyacht presents classic Perini Navi layout featuring the extended flybridge protected by continuous glass window, with two helms, al-fresco dining, bar and sunlounge. Her future owner still has the opportunity to slightly modify the living facilities and choose between 4 or 5 cabin layouts and the interior design.

Conceived as a fast-cruising sloop, this new construction project carries Perini Navi signature centreboard that keeps the yacht stable while sailing. Two-level cockpit with two separate relaxing areas gives access to foldable swimming platform, while the tender garage is located fore.

Modern, elegant and durable, the PERINI NAVI 47M S/Y for sale, represents a sum of innovations and inventions, all designed and developed in-house by Perini Navi. This 47-metre modern sailing yacht offers a wider transom for more exterior living space, larger interior volumes, high-tech solutions to facilitate navigation, extensive use of glass and easy sailing.

Both styling and naval architecture come from the shipyard’s in-house team, blending modern lines and strong performance. To that end, the sail area is 13,723 square feet (1,275 square meters), complemented by a 205-foot-high (62.5-meter-high) carbon mast with carbon boom and standing riggings. Sloop-rigged, the 47M is very easy to handle. When under power, with the system including a single 715 Hp CATERPILLAR diesel engine, the yacht reaches 3,500 nautical miles of range (Transatlantic) at 10 knots.

The yacht features 4 staterooms, with an optional 5th cabin, converting from an office or gym for 8 to 11 guests. To take advantage of the 34’ 7” (10.5-meter) beam, the master suite sits aft below decks.

The master and other areas onboard make use of much larger glass panes than other Perini Navi deliveries so far. The main-deck saloon is one such area, although its biggest attraction is its space utilization. In fact, when the sliding doors to the aft deck are open, it becomes an extra-light and bright, 66-foot-long (20-meter-long) social space that feels like an effortless extension of the cockpit and aft deck with which it creates an open-plan space. Further attractive social spaces aboard the PERINI NAVI 47M S/Y include the beach deck, a retractable fold-down swimming platform, and the 969-square-foot (90-square-meter) flying bridge. The transom has been radically innovated and accessing the water is easier than ever.

The 47m S/Y is a project for which the yard believes strongly from the very start. This is why they accepted the challenge of starting construction on spec and her completion and delivery is set for summer 2026. This sailing vessel should carry ABS ✠ A1 Commercial Yachting Service - ✠ AMS - LY3 Commercial Class.

“Built to the market’s appreciation for these new generation sailing yachts which meld innovative yet powerful performance under sail with a unique standard of comfort, Perini Navi can now offer the market a complete and unprecedented range of sailing yachts to meet clients’ differing needs”.

Perini Navi has evolved its classic keel design and this new version offers superior performance in addition to delivering a shallow draft to allow the yacht venture closer to the coast.

The S/Y 47m exterior lines combine innovation with tradition and are strikingly sleek and elegant, very much in line with the yard’s signature style.

Perini Navi Yachts for Sale

Started in 1983 by Fabio Perini as Perini Navi to build sailing yachts, the Italian company today produces both sailing and motor yachts as the Perini Navi Group. All of the sailing-yacht activity (40 to 60 meters, 60 meters and larger, custom projects, racing yachts, and fast cruising yachts) falls under the Perini Navi brand. The motor-yacht brand is Picchiotti and includes the Vitruvius line of luxury expedition motor yachts.

Perini Navi Group production can be found in three locations: Perini Navi, Viareggio, Italy; Cantiere Picchiotti, La Spezia, Italy; and Perini Istanbul, Yildiz, Turkey. Each yard specializes in different areas. Viareggio houses the headquarters and the sailing-yacht division. The Picchiotti yard dates to 1600 and was acquired by the group to launch the motor-yacht branch. The Turkey location is the metalworking arm, where some of the hulls and superstructures for both motor and sailing yachts are constructed. The group collaborates with such naval architects and designers as Ron Holland, Nauta Yacht Design, Philippe Briand, Ken Freivokh Design, Dykstra Naval Architects, and more.

The group currently boasts 54 yachts on the water—52 sailing yachts and two motor yachts. On the sailing-yacht side, the most recent delivery was hull C.2173. While the most notable was the 289-foot (88-meter) Maltese Falcon , launched in 2006.

Designed by Perini Navi’s in-house team in conjunction with New Zealander Ron Holland, the sleek 164-foot (50-meter) ketch was built in aluminum and boasts a sail plan of 15,069 square feet (1,400 square meters), handled by 11 reel captive winches.

The Maltese Falcon made its mark with its distinctive stealth looks, three carbon fiber masts, automated square-rigged DynaRig sail plan, and sail area of 25,833 square feet (2,400 square meters).

Picchiotti, the motor-yacht side, has launched two explorer yachts, the first being the 164-foot (50-meter) Vitruvius Exuma and the second, the 183-foot (55.7-meter) Galileo G .

Exuma broke ground in 2010 for the inventive Vitruvius design by Philippe Briand. This rugged yet beautiful yacht boasts an innovative, sleek, and efficient hull, as well as a warm streamlined interior. The contemporary yet comfortable yacht accommodates nine guests in five staterooms and carries among other toys, a custom 16-foot amphibious jeep and a 12-foot Hov Pod hovercraft.

Galileo G launched in 2011 and carries Ice Class certification and an incredible 9,000-nautical-mile range. The yacht accommodates 12 guests in five staterooms, plus a gym that converts into a cabin.

Both the Maltese Falcon and Exuma are available for charter.  Other Perini Navi Yachts that are available for charter include:  Helios, Selene, Salute and Parsifal III.

Perini Navi 56M (2003) Description

This 184’ PERINI NAVI 56M sailing yacht is a full aluminium motorsailer built in 2003 by Perini Navi in Italy with impressive volumes and performance due to her 497 Gross Tons. She features exterior design and naval architecture by Perini Navi and Ron Holland, while her interior design was penned in-house by Perini Navi.

The differences with other 9 sisterships (only another one ROSEHEARTY has the same height of the masts) are her main mast measuring 59m and her mizzen mast measuring 48m from water line, giving her a larger sail area and a faster sailing. To prove her performance, she participated at the first Perini Cup regatta in 2004 and she won the group B over 46m, so she’s one of the two fastest in the series of the PERINI NAVI 56M S/Y with the particularity that her Owner uses her privately for family and friends.

Her first 10-year ABS Classification survey was completed in the summer of 2014 and extensive servicing, upgrading, and improvements were accomplished at the same time.

This PERINI NAVI 56M is currently undergoing a 20-year ABS survey, and as a part of the survey, her rigging is being serviced, mechanical systems serviced, and the ABS Class surveyors where very pleasantly surprised by her amazingly good measurements and results they are getting. Also, she is going to be mechanically in ”as new condition” since her main engines have been taken off the vessel, are dismantled and being overhauled and set to “0 hours”, emergency generator of 80 kW has been dismounted and being overhauled, her two main generators have been taken out and two new Caterpillar generators of 150 kW will be fitted by end of April 2023. These works value is + €3 Million  and are being carried-out, under warranty at Perini Navi’s refit yard NCA Refit in Carrara, Italy.

On boarding the vessel via the impressive passerelle, the sweep of teak decking is broken by the typical Perini stern cockpit built on a lower level than the main deck, and it is completely covered by the flybridge above. Plenty of room is offered for lounging on its comfortable chairs and sofas. The area is very suitable for stylish dining, or evening cocktail parties.

The broad side decks are protected by high bulwarks that leading onto the foredeck, while sturdy stairs lead up to the flybridge with its bimini covered steering and sail control position, sofas and tables, and several different sunbathing areas, plus a spa pool.

Back on the main deck, doors on both sides open from the cockpit into the main saloon, flooded with light from expansive windows on each side. The aft section is cosy and sociable, and with free standing furniture, allowing one to withdraw to a quiet corner if desired. Forward, the saloon is adjoined by a private office to port and a generously proportioned formal dining room to starboard. The rooms are panelled in cherry and teak, with the grain of the wood varying from one area to the next. They exude an air of solidity and calmness due to the immaculate finish. Also, to be found on the main deck are a day head, a bar with service galley and the expansive bridge with navigation area to port.

Up to 12 guests are comfortably accommodated in luxury and style onboard this PERINI NAVI 56M sailing Superyacht, and she also has accommodation for up to 10 crew members.

A spiral staircase between the saloon and dining room leads down to the Owner and guests’ living quarters which occupy the whole amidships section of the lower deck. From the hall, the Owner’s suite is aft, extending across the full beam of the yacht, with a king size bed, sitting room/TV corner and walk-in wardrobe, plus a vast bathroom with a bathtub and a separate shower stall. An impressive and extensive fitness centre, with adjacent sauna is to port equipped with the highest quality exercise machines. It is accessible either from the hall or from the Owner’s bathroom.

Forward are two guest staterooms with queen size beds, and two staterooms with twin single beds and additional Pullman berths, each with their own bathrooms and fitted out in the same style as the Owner’s quarters.

The well-proportioned crew quarters, separated from the Owner and guest areas by a watertight bulkhead, are accessed either from the bridge or from the foredeck. The crew mess and professionally equipped main galley are positioned on opposite sides, while forward is the Captain’s double en-suite cabin opposite an en-suite cabin with a double and single berth. Two more cabins with twin single berths are forward and share a shower room.

The aft third of the lower deck is reserved for technical areas and is separated from the forward sections by a watertight and soundproof bulkhead. The large and well laid out machinery room contains the two Deutz main engines and three generators, one of which is purely to provide power to the yacht’s sail handling systems. There is ample room for the other equipment; water makers, air conditioning plant, sanitary systems, etc., for all service routines.

Adjoining this area in the stern is the separate engine control room with electrical switch boards, a large workshop and stowage space for diving and other watersports equipment, with a fold down swim/boarding platform and a staircase to the cockpit above.

Under sails her performance is ensured by her impressive sail area of 1,585 m2 (17,029 sq. ft.), while she is also powered by twin 1240 Hp Deutz AG engines, which give her a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots for a range of 3750 nautical miles.

This PERINI NAVI 56M S/Y is competitively priced and must be inspected to appreciate all she has to offer.

Why search of superyacht wreck has been so difficult

A diver coordinating the search and rescue effort says conditions have been "prohibitive". Sky News looks at the challenges the operation has faced.

Friday 23 August 2024 12:40, UK

Rescue personnel and divers operate in search for the missing, including British entrepreneur Mike Lynch, in the area where a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Porticello, near the Sicilian city of Palermo, Italy, August 21, 2024. REUTERS/Guglielmo Mangiapane TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY

The search operation to recover the bodies of those who died on board the Bayesian superyacht when it sank has been plagued with difficulties.

Seven bodies have been found after the luxury vessel went down off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday, with six identified.

Here, Sky News looks at the factors that have made the search and rescue operation so difficult.

Follow latest updates on superyacht sinking

Depth of the wreckage

Marco Tilotta, a diver who has been coordinating the search and rescue, said teams worked continuously from Monday but conditions below the water have been "prohibitive".

The British-flagged superyacht is still largely intact on the seabed, but the 50m depth to which it sank makes it difficult to access.

The depth is far deeper than most recreational divers are qualified to reach and requires special precautions.

This means divers can only spend around 12 minutes under the water at a time - with a maximum of 10 minutes of actual search time.

This is in part to help avoid decompression sickness - also known as the "bends" - which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly.

"The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be," says Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine.

As well as the pressure at this depth, divers have had to battle the cold and dark water conditions.

To try to overcome this, a tag-team method has been used to swap divers in and out.

Entering the yacht

Reaching the wreckage is only the beginning of the difficulties posed to divers.

The 56-metre-long vessel is currently lying on its right side, meaning there are few points of entry. Divers have not been able to see anything inside the yacht from outside it.

Luca Cari, from Italy's fire and rescue department, said originally divers were able to enter the yacht through the lounge via a ladder. It has been reported were also able to open a hole in the side of the boat.

The command bridge, which is full of electrical cables, was also searched but no one was found.

Mr Cari said divers identified a glass window through which they could enter, though it had to be removed to gain access. The window is 3cm thick, making removal difficult.

Cabins blocked by furniture

The Bayesian sank in a matter of minutes at around 4.30am local time on Monday, so many of the 22 people on board were thought to have been asleep.

Rescue crews said they assumed those missing were in cabins below deck, but divers were unable to access these areas because of furniture blocking the way.

According to Italian media, two of the bodies recovered on Wednesday were found behind two mattresses.

Technology employed to help search

As well as specialist divers, remote-controlled underwater devices have been deployed during the search.

One drone used by the Italian coastguard can stay at a depth of 50m for around two hours.

An upgraded drone can stay underwater for six to seven hours at a depth of 300m.

The underwater technology can record detailed images and help with a reconstruction of what happened.

Former Royal Navy submarine captain Ryan Ramsey said the drones were "amazing pieces of technology".

Dr Jamie Pringle, a reader in forensic geoscience at Keele University, added that the devices were "really useful" for divers to check which areas should be explored further, and others which should be avoided.

Superyacht captain investigated on suspicion of manslaughter after deadly sinking

ROME — A multiple manslaughter investigation has been launched into the captain of a superyacht that sank in a violent storm off Sicily , killing British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people, his lawyer has told NBC News.

James Cutfield is also being investigated on suspicion of causing a shipwreck, the lawyer, Giovanni Rizzuti, said in a telephone conversation on Monday. He added that Sicilian prosecutors will question Cutfield, 51, again Tuesday.

In a separate interview Tuesday, Rizzuti said that Cutfield was expected to be questioned by prosecutors at around 3 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET) at the hotel where the captain, crew and survivors have been staying following the shipwreck.

Being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow. Notices to people under investigation need to be sent out before authorities can carry out the autopsies on the bodies of the dead.

It is unclear whether other members of the crew of the $40 million Bayesian or any other people will also be put under investigation along with Cutfield, a New Zealand national.

After the luxury 180-foot vessel went down early last Monday, 15 of the 22 people onboard survived and were rescued from the waters off Porticello, a small fishing port off northern Sicily.

The body of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national who was the ship’s cook, was recovered shortly after the ship went down.

An undated photo of Hannah Lynch and Mike Lynch.

A massive search effort was then launched for Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, as well as Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International and the British insurance firm Hiscox, and his wife, Judy; and a well-known New York City defense attorney, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife, Neda.

All of their bodies were eventually pulled from the wreck.

The Bayesian was owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued after it capsized in what Italian officials called a “violent storm.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast was the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who took along those who appeared in his defense in U.S. court.

Announcing the opening of a manslaughter investigation at a news conference Saturday, prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the sinking could have been caused by “behaviors that were not in order.”

Claudio Lavanga reported from Rome and Henry Austin from London.

Sicily yacht tragedy: Bayesian captain set to face manslaughter investigation

The captain of the Bayesian superyacht is to be investigated for multiple manslaughter cases and shipwreck after seven people died when the vessel sunk last week, according to Italian media reports.

Italian prosecutors are expected to name 51-year-old James Cutfield, a New Zealand citizen, on Monday or Tuesday before launching an investigation, the Adnkronos news agency reported.

Such an investigation would not imply guilt or any certainty that formal charges will follow. Under maritime law, a captain has absolute responsibility for the ship, its crew and the safety of everyone on board.

The Ansa agency reported that the captain was heard by magistrates for two hours on Sunday. Newspaper La Republica suggested prosecutors could investigate another surviving crew member who was on duty at the time of the incident.

The news comes after Ambrogio Cartosio, head of the public prosecutor’s office in Termini Imerese, Sicily, said on Saturday that his office had opened an initial investigation into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.

The 184-ft long Bayesian – deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi – capsized off Palermo, the capital of Sicily, during a storm early last Monday while carrying 22 people.

UK tech mogul Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, and Recaldo Thomas, a chef on the vessel, all died in the incident.

The trip was reportedly organised to celebrate Lynch’s acquittal in June following a more than decade-long legal battle over the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett Packard in 2011.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, survived the wreck alongside 14 others – including Cutfield and eight other crew members.

Prosecutors in Termini Imerese have declined to comment on Cutfield, while none of the surviving crew members have commented on the investigation. Cutfield told Italian media last week that he “did not see” the storm coming.

All the surviving crew are understood to be remaining at the Hotel Domina Zagarella in Sicily for questioning, while the rescued passengers, all British, have left the country after speaking to authorities.

Italian authorities said five of the bodies were found together in the first cabin on the left side of the yacht and that the sixth – Hannah Lynch – was found alone in the third cabin on the left, with the victims believed to have been trying to escape the water as the vessel sunk to its right.

Prosecutors have said the sinking was “extremely rapid” and could have been caused by a “downburst” – a powerful, localised gusty wind that descends from a thunderstorm.

One haute yacht, the spirit bartech f35 owns speed, style, and control.

The Spirit Yachts BARTech F35's stylish design dovetails classic lines with modern technology, ... [+] flying on foils while taking on the appearance of a golden era film star.

BAR Technologies and Spirit Yachts dovetailed talent and expertise to deliver a chic luxury launch in May of 2023, the Spirit BARTech F35 . With a gleaming mahogany skin and a nostalgic profile taking inspiration from the Rum Runners of the 1920s, the F35 is a distinctive, scene-stealing craft.

The first fully electric yacht to own a 100 nautical mile range, the F35 flies on foils while powering ahead at what is described as thrilling speed, courtesy of its electric motor and battery system. The yacht set a speed record for the circumnavigation around the Isle of Wight for electric vessels, slashing the existing best time from six hours to just one hour and 56 minutes.

The Spirit Yachts F35 is all about BAR Technologies' foiling design, offering a high level of speed, ... [+] control, and stability.

UK firm BAR Technologies , branched from Ben Ainslee Racing, employs advanced strategies and innovations to deliver efficient, sustainable solutions in answer to client requests. Using Artificial Intelligence, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Design Optimization, Finite Element Analysis, Performance Analysis, and expertise gained from America's Cup designs, BAR Technologies appears at the forefront of engineering for leisure craft as well as commercial vessels and work boats, delivering systems that are sustainable with an emphasis on exceptional results.

Ipswich, Suffolk, UK-based Spirit Yachts is known for precision woodworking and classic yacht design placing an emphasis on sustainable methods and materials. Universally recognized for a high quality aesthetic and functional purpose, Spirit Yachts builds custom wooden motor and sailing yachts. They are experts in creating everything from day sailors and performance racing yachts to blue water cruisers. And, as they point out on their website, occasionally the owner's brief requesting the design embraces all three.

A Specific Commission

A chic instrument panel and innovative design with removable panels make the Spirit Yachts BARTech ... [+] F35 a versatile choice, going from a two person spider to a six person entertainer.

Already an owner of a Spirit 111 sailing yacht , the owner of the first F35 wrote a brief that requested a suitable launch to complement the existing yacht. Additionally, the owner requested that the launch be highly efficient, sustainable, and display a classic aesthetic. All squarely within Spirit Yachts' wheelhouse, so to speak, the design process began.

The successful completion resulted in a vessel inspired by sleek Rum Runners of decades past, fitted with BAR Technologies patented fully foiling design that lifts the boat entirely out of the water. Pairing nostalgic good looks with top-of-industry technology, the F35 offers an exclusive, sophisticated, comfortable ride.

Aft cowling panels lift off to reveal additional seating for three and a table, giving the Spirit ... [+] Yachts BARTech F35 a wider range of possibilities.

F35 By The Numbers

A luxury, 35-foot, fully electric foiling launch, the Spirit Yachts BARTech F35 is constructed of carbon skinned cedar planked mahogany veneer. Classing styling disguises the electric propulsion provided by the 24 V battery system, driving the F35 to a top speed of 30 knots, with a cruise speed of 22 knots and a 100 nautical mile range at 20 knots. A coachroof hatch is convenient for drop in battery access.

A "C" category inshore design, the F35 is stable in up to two meter significant wave heights, capable in wind speeds up to Force 6. The Aft foil, as well as the forward foils, are constructed in titanium with a composite trailing edge.

A cool box keeps drinks and snacks chilled. A water ski attachment point is provided by an ensign post fitting.

Body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered from yacht wreckage, officials say

Italy boaters missing.

PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for . The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout , and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told the AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are “designed to be unsinkable."

“And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever,” CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that “obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water,” suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Costantino also noted that sailing ships require “a greater competence” to be guided compared with motor boats.

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed . Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was the first to be recovered , on Monday. His death was confirmed by his family.

Friends of Thomas, best known as “Rick,” paid tribute to him on Thursday at a favorite bar in the Caribbean Island of Antigua. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of Thomas' last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told the AP.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht’s hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.

56m perini navi sailing yacht BAYESIAN yacht sinks off coast of sicily

Live updates: Seven dead in 56m superyacht Bayesian sinking tragedy

Seven people have died in the Bayesian sinking disaster. These include the six missing people who were inside the yacht when it sank, as well as a seventh person who was located shortly after the disaster. The seventh person is understood to be the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas. The other six are:

  • British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
  • Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
  • Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
  • Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
  • Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife

It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew

No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sank off the Italian island of Sicily on 19 August. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started taking on water and sank rapidly.

The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.

"Very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" says captain of sistership

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".

David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat".  "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.

However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's  74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.

Live updates

  • During a news conference on Saturday morning (24 August), prosecutors confirmed they are in the early stages of investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter. Authorities also said the yacht likely sunk because of a downburst (powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm), rather than a waterspout.
  • A search and rescue for six missing people has concluded. The final missing person is understood to be Hannah Lynch.
  • According to Reuters, six bodies have now been found in the sunken yacht. These include Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, although Italian authorities have not confirmed this.
  • One person was found immediately after the yacht sunk, and this is understood to be the yacht's chef.
  • Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old are among the fifteen people rescued along with Bayesian' s captain, James Cutfield.
  • Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell ,  stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
  • Divers have been able to reach Bayesian' s sunken hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
  • Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
  • At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

BOAT International will update the story as it develops.

Prosecutors investigating captain of superyacht that sank off Sicily

Seven people, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, died when the ship went down in a sudden storm.

Prosecutors in Italy are investigating the captain of the superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people, on possible charges including manslaughter, his lawyer said.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander, was being investigated for possible manslaughter and shipwreck, lawyer Aldo Mordiglia said on Monday.

Italian prosecutors open manslaughter investigation into superyacht sinking, last body from superyacht sinking off sicily found: italian coastguard, five bodies retrieved from tech tycoon mike lynch’s sunken yacht in sicily, divers search sicily yacht wreck with uk tech boss among the six missing.

Cutfield was one of 15 people on board the 56-meter (184 ft) Bayesian, which sank on August 19 after it was hit by a predawn storm while at anchor off Porticello, near Palermo.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah and five others were killed.

Mordiglia, one of two lawyers appointed for the captain’s defence, said Cutfield would be questioned by prosecutors on Tuesday. He was previously questioned in the aftermath of the incident, while other crew members were questioned on Monday.

Under Italian law, being under investigation does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow. Under maritime law, a captain has full responsibility for the ship, crew, and all on board.

On Saturday, the chief prosecutor, Ambrogio Cartosio, confirmed that an investigation had been launched .

He said his team would consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

Investigators are focusing on how a boat deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer sank while a nearby yacht remained largely unscathed.

Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” – a localised, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly on hitting the ground.

They have said the investigation is likely to take time and will require the wreck to be salvaged from the sea. The Bayesian is currently lying on its right side, at a depth of about 50 metres (54.68 yards).

Lynch, 59, had invited friends and family for a holiday on the Bayesian to celebrate his recent acquittal on $11bn fraud charges linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The other five victims were Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s American lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy; and Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef.

Everything We Know About the Final Moments of the Passengers Who Died in the Sicily Yacht Tragedy

Five of the seven victims had been "searching for air pockets" as the luxury yacht sank on Aug. 19, authorities said

PERINI NAVI PRESS OFFICE/HANDOUT/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock

The luxury yacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday, Aug. 19, resulted in the deaths of six passengers and one crew member.

Less than a week later, on Saturday, Aug. 24, Ambrogio Cartosio, the Chief Prosecutor of Termini Imerese, announced that Italian authorities were launching a manslaughter investigation into the sinking , and he identified all of the victims.

The seven victims who died in the tragic sinking were yacht chef Recaldo Thomas; British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah Lynch; Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda ; and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy .

As authorities attempt to answer questions about what exactly led to the sinking of the 183-foot British-flagged vessel — which went down during a "violent storm,” the Italian Coast Guard previously told PEOPLE in a statement — here is what we currently know about the victims’ final moments.

FAMILY HANDOUT/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock

During the Aug. 24 press conference, Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra, head of the Palermo Fire Brigade, revealed that as the Bayesian began going down early Monday morning, “It was quite clear that people were trying to hide in the cabins.”

“In the left-hand side, we found the first 5 bodies in the left-hand side cabins, and the final body on the right-hand side,” Fiandra said. “We found them on the highest part of the ship, which was closer to the surface. The vessel had three cabins on each side.”

The five victims, who "took refuge” on the luxury yacht’s left side, had been "searching for air pockets" in a final attempt at survival," he added.

As for why the victims were in the cabins in the first place, Giovanni Costantino — who leads The Italian Sea Group, the company that now owns Perini Navi, which built the Bayesian back in 2008 — told CNN it was due to a “very long sum of errors."

"Everything that has been done reveals a very long sum of errors,” he said in his interview, translated from Italian. “The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor. And then why didn't the crew know about the incoming disturbance?”

Prior to the storm and subsequent sinking, some of the luxury yacht’s passengers were in celebration mode. They had been commemorating the recent acquittal of one of the victims, Lynch, 59, a source close to the survivors previously told PEOPLE.

Two months ago, Lynch was acquitted on all counts of a series of fraud and conspiracy charges he faced in the U.S. after a years-long legal battle dating back to 2018.

He celebrated the acquittal on the Bayesian with his daughter and his wife, Angela Bacare, who was rescued along with 14 others on board.

Also celebrating were Morvillo, 59, who represented Lynch in the case, and Bloomer, 70, who was a close friend of the tech entrepreneur.

OpenAI, Adobe and Microsoft support California bill requiring watermarks on AI content

OpenAI, Adobe and Microsoft have thrown their support behind a California bill requiring tech companies to label AI-generated content, according to letters from the companies viewed by TechCrunch. OpenAI, Adobe and Microsoft are part of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, which helped create C2PA metadata -- a widely used standard for marking AI-generated content. A trade group representing Adobe, Microsoft and the nation's largest software makers previously opposed AB 3211 in April, calling the bill "unworkable" and "overly burdensome" in a letter to California lawmakers.

TechCrunch Space: The Starliner saga comes to a close -- for now

NASA leadership have made their decision: Starliner will be coming back to Earth -- empty. After months of data analysis and internal deliberation, NASA leadership announced on Saturday that Starliner will be coming back to Earth in September, without a crew. Meanwhile, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams will remain on-board the International Space Station until February 2025, when they will return on SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft as part of the Crew-9 mission.

California AI bill sparks debate in Silicon Valley as some tech giants call it a threat to innovation

A controversial AI regulation bill is sparking a fierce debate in Silicon Valley. California legislatures will vote on SB 1047 this week. If passed, it would broadly regulate how AI is deployed and developed.

Russia’s fighters are waging bloody battles in Ukraine’s east to add to its captured territory.

Moscow supports this war effort with soldiers from outside the regular army, including some from a training camp in Chechnya.

Some join for the money, others to escape everyday drudgery, and some fight out of patriotism. But there are tearful goodbyes.

Soldiers trained in Chechnya range from battle tested mercenaries to raw recruits without combat experience.

Mayhem awaits them, as evident in the devastation of the city of Bakhmut.

Inside the Chechen Units Helping to Fight Russia’s War

Text by Neil MacFarquhar

Nanna Heitmann spent time observing Russian troops training in Chechnya, then later traveled to Bakhmut, Ukraine. Neil MacFarquhar reported from New York.

A hulking military transport plane roared onto the tarmac at the main airfield in Grozny, the capital of the Chechen Republic in southwestern Russia, and a group of 120 volunteer fighters heading for Ukraine clambered aboard.

Dressed in camouflage, the newly minted troops had just completed at least 10 days of training in Gudermes, near Grozny, at the Special Forces University, which accepts men from across Russia for general military instruction.

Some of the trainees lacked any combat experience. Others were veterans returning to Ukraine for their second or third tour — including former mercenaries from the Wagner militia, disbanded in 2023 after a short-lived mutiny against the Kremlin.

Six soldiers kneeling on cardboard to pray. They are all dressed in camouflage.

Some Wagner fighters, chafing at the idea of working for the Russian Defense Ministry, instead transferred whole units to the Chechen-trained forces, known as Akhmat battalions, intended in part to absorb fighters from outside the Russian Army. Wagner veterans were often first recruited from prison, including a lean man with a gold front tooth, identified only by his military call sign, “Jedi,” because of the potential for retribution.

“Go for your Fatherland? What kind of Fatherland? It kept me in prison all my life,” said Jedi, 39, a construction laborer who was convicted of robbery and fraud. In and out of jail since 14, he had six months left on a six-year sentence when he signed up.

“The volunteers go for the money,” he said. “I have yet to meet anyone here for the ideology.” He also wanted a clean slate, he said.

Fat signing bonuses plus payments of about $2,000 per month, at least double the average wage in Russia, have spurred recruitment.

The training near Grozny highlights the evolution of ethnic loyalties that is manifest in this war. Some of those now training there were last in Chechnya as young conscripts for the Russian Army, fighting against Chechens who were part of the separatist movement.

The participation of some Chechens represents another inversion of history: After hundreds of years of enmity with Russia, Chechens were deploying to Ukraine to fight Moscow’s war.

The separatist movement of the 1990s culminated in two brutal wars against Moscow that lasted intermittently for over a decade. The city of Grozny was flattened, and tens of thousands of Chechens died.

photo

Chechnya is ruled by the strongman Ramzan Kadyrov. Portraits of him and his father, Akhmat Kadyrov, can be seen all over Grozny.

Grozny, the capital, was entirely rebuilt after the Russian military flattened it during the Chechen wars.

The history of those wars is not commemorated the way other conflicts are, such as World War II.

A downtown photo exhibit chronicles both the devastation and reconstruction of the city.

Few traces of Grozny’s destruction remain. Today, new mosques and luxury boutiques stand amid the skyscrapers.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the authoritarian leader of Chechnya, has taken an aggressive stance toward Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February 2022. Chechen forces have claimed an instrumental role in some key battles, including the siege of Mariupol early in the war.

But Mr. Kadyrov has faced accusations that he has refrained from sending his fighters full-bore into the fight, with Chechens dying in fewer numbers than soldiers from other minority areas. Sparing his fighters keeps intact his private militia, the core of the security forces that ensure his rule in Chechnya.

Instead, Mr. Kadyrov has tried to underscore his loyalty to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia by pouring resources into this military training center. The regimen consists of live fire exercises with artillery, some mining and demining instruction and first aid.

The various Akhmat battalions were named, like so much in Chechnya, after Mr. Kadyrov’s father, Akhmat Kadyrov, who switched sides to join Moscow in the separatist struggle and was then assassinated in 2004.

Russia has recruited troops for its war effort wherever it could find them, seeking to minimize the need for a draft. In 2022, it lifted an almost blanket ban on Chechens serving in the Russian military, fallout from the separatist movement.

Of the group being dispatched to Ukraine last fall from the tarmac in Grozny, many were in their 30s and 40s, and fewer than 10 were Chechens. Despite Jedi’s claims, money is not the sole motivation.

Some fled troubled domestic lives. Others wanted to escape daily drudgery. Some, of course, profess to be fighting out of patriotism. Many of the men agreed to talk on the condition that they be identified by only their first names or military call signs for fear of retribution.

Anatoly, 24, was among 10 men who volunteered together from a small farming village high in the mountains in the picturesque, south-central Altai region. “My father forced me to shovel snow, to work, to clear out the dung from the cows,” he said. “I ran away from this work to do something else. Every year is the same.” He admitted that the money was an incentive, too.

Another rural worker, a 45-year-old shepherd who uses the call sign “Masyanya,” traveled about 4,500 kilometers from the Republic of Khakassia for the training. “I’m going to defend my motherland, so the war doesn’t come here,” he said.

The contract with the Akhmat battalion lasts only four months, a big incentive when compared with the open-ended deployments for regular soldiers.

Last fall, Mr. Kadyrov formed a new unit, the Sheikh Mansour battalion, named after an 18th-century imam who fought against the Russian Empire. The soldiers are all Chechens or from the small, neighboring republics in the mountainous Caucasus region, and are mostly in their 20s. Chechens fighting for Ukraine against Russia named their battalion after Sheikh Mansour first, and now Mr. Kadyrov is trying to reclaim the name.

Turpal, 20, was working as a security guard for a large supermarket chain in Moscow when he got permission from his father to sign up for the new unit, saying that he wanted to fight against “those devils who are in Ukraine who want to bring their perverted ideas here.”

As he left to go back to the training center after a weekend visiting his parents, he hugged his mother and shook hands with his father. “Russia has been fighting for all its existence,” said Mayrali, Turpal’s father. “You can’t beat it. It is better for Chechnya to be with Russia than to be against Russia.”

Wagner veterans serve in the Sheikh Mansour battalion, too. A 35-year-old fighter who uses the call sign “Dikiy,” or “Wild,” said that he had served 18 months of a nearly 10-year sentence for murder when he signed up. He fought in Ukraine for 11 months, was wounded three times and still gets fierce headaches.

Back in Chechnya, he found the idea of working for $200 per month demoralizing, so he returned to the war. “I don’t know how to do anything else,” he said.

The Akhmat troops are better equipped than the regular army; unlike some regular Russian soldiers, they do not have to buy their own basic equipment.

Jedi said that when he first deployed with Wagner in Ukraine, some young men in the Russian Army came running up begging for supplies, for fuel and for bread. “In Akhmat, I don’t even wash my socks. I wear them, throw them away, wear them,” he said. “The same applies to underwear and bed linen. We have everything.”

Moscow subsidizes an estimated 80 percent of Chechnya’s budget, though it is unclear how much goes to military training.

At the airfield, before the battalion departed, a senior officer lined up the new soldiers to wish them good luck. “Are the fighters ready?” he shouted. “Yes sir,” they barked in unison, followed by the Muslim expression “Allahu akbar!” or “God is great!” plus the Chechen war cry, “Akhmat Sila!” or “Akhmat rules!”

Once they arrived in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, some of the men were assigned to maintain Russian control over Bakhmut, now an abandoned husk of a city after months of fierce fighting.

The streets are deserted, especially during the day, when Ukrainian drones roam overhead, hunting for targets. On foggy days, fighters can sometimes be glimpsed walking through the rubble.

Traffic rumbles to life at night, when the wounded from battles scattered around the Bakhmut region are evacuated. The roads are littered with burned cars and ambulances.

While the war grinds relentlessly above ground, the roar of artillery and exploding shells does not penetrate far beneath the surface, where the Akhmat forces have taken over a field hospital first set up by Wagner.

The Bakhmut region was once famous for its sparkling wine, and the hospital operates in the maze of underground tunnels where tens of thousands of bottles remain stored along the walls. (The prohibition on drinking it by both Wagner and Akhmat has been largely respected.) Once a tourist attraction, the old décor is still intact; dusty plaster statues of ancient gods loom over the wounded.

The caves are wide enough to accommodate at least two vans abreast, and several times a day, vehicles ferrying the wounded and the dead navigate the darkened, fog-shrouded labyrinth. Soldiers leap from the vehicles and quickly carry their often groaning comrades on stretchers to the makeshift stabilization point.

In Bakhmut, wounded Russian soldiers are treated at an underground hospital.

Though Russian forces captured the city last year, fighting in the vicinity remains fierce.

Medical personnel operate in rooms set up in a warren of tunnels that once served as a wine cellar.

The wounded are ferried on stretchers day and night as explosions boom in the distance.

Wounded soldiers wait to get treated at the underground hospital.

One of the surgeons, Bulya, 34, has worked for Wagner, mostly in Africa, since 2017. On trips to Moscow, he said, people there reacted to seeing him in his fatigues like “dirt under your fingernails,” but in Chechnya, he found more respect.

As losses pile up, Bulya said that he was eager for the Russian Army to make it to Kyiv. “I don’t need their negotiations,” he said using an expletive. “I hope that Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin will do that, that we will go to the end. We will get there.”

Anastasia Trofimova contributed reporting from Grozny and Bakhmut.

An earlier version of this article misstated that Chechnya is in southeast Russia. It is in southwest Russia.
