Free Spirit Yacht Cruises is home to the most inviting private yacht charters on Lake Michigan. Docked at Burnham Harbor, conveniently located just north of Lakeside Center McCormick Place, Free Spirit Yachts are the perfect venues for corporate entertaining, meetings, product launch events, escape the trade floor luncheons and more.

Our two yachts, the Gypsy Spirit (2-49 people) and the Free Spirit (up to 120 people) are designed for your guests’ relaxation and comfort. We’re not your typical yacht charter company. We had the after party for our wedding on the gypsy spirit and it was beyond our expectations. The captain and crew were so kind and accommodating. The boat is also in great condition. Our guests enjoyed every minute. We cannot recommend them more!

What a fantastic party on the beautiful Free Spirit cruise...my husband was thrilled with his surprise party! First of Angela the owner is wonderful to work with, she is great with emails. The entire crew were sweet and hospitable to our guests. We had a blast with the open bar, food and dancing. The only glitch is the parking... we need to figure that out way in advance. Will be trouble if there is a game at solider field. Cannot wait to host another party soon!

free spirit yacht cruises

I attended a yoga and yacht cruise last weekend with yoga instructor Jennifer Goodman. I throughly enjoyed the experience plus it was a glorious Sunday with the best chicago weather. Our bartender Jim was very pleasant and served a few impressive cocktails and mimosas. The owner Angela was a delight to speak with and very hospitable in welcoming everyone aboard and saying goodbyes after the cruise. I hope to book some corporate events and maybe host a bday party for a special person I love on Free Spirit.

Not what I expected. For the amount that they charge they need to update their yacht. The carpet and furniture is quite dated. The day of our cruise there was a Bears game And the traffic was horrendous! It was difficult getting to the harbor and when we did we could not park in the lot. This was not explained to prior to us arriving. Joe, the owner of Free Spirit, is a rude guy and was not helpful in helping us find adequate parking. He had a "thats not my problem" attitude about it. We finally found parking and had to walk pretty far to reach to Harbor. The time our entire group got onto the yacht. It was an hour after our cruise Was set to start. I thought for sure about the company would give us a discount for all the problems we encountered. But of course they did not. Once we started, cruising, the weather was perfect. The food was decent and the staff was helpful. All in all it was ... ok

Listen. I booked this cruise for close family and friends. A way to fellowship and have a good time after such a challenging year of being in Covid and having to be apart. I wasn't sure what to expect but let me tell you. The cruise did NOT disappoint. Captain Jeff was awesome. Gabby was awesome. And Lordy I forgot the name of the 3rd crew member but he was awesome. The food was delicious. The views were magnificent. The crew was welcoming and friendly. I literally could NOT have asked for a better way to spend the afternoon. It was relaxing and peaceful. It was small group so we was able to spread out and enjoy the cruise in our own ways. It was exactly what was needed and I am so very glad to have the experience. If you're on the fence, let me help you...BOOK IT!!

We celebrated my husband's 50th birthday with family and friends on the Gypsy Spirit. It was absolutely wonderful. Angela and Joe were easy to work with. The crew on board were so attentive and helpful - they really took care of us beautifully every minute. The catered beef tacos were delicious, so was the fruit melange. We traveled up and down the Chicago River and the sights were gorgeous. It was spacious inside and everyone was so comfortable. The upperdeck and the bow were favorite spots - the kids loved every minute. It was a little cold and windy that day, but we dressed warmly and the sun was out and it was a lot of fun. What a memorable and unique event. Thank you so much Free Spirit Yacht Cruises!

Awesome! We had our wedding on The Free Spirit Chicago on 7-7-07 and while they didn't have anything to do with the weather or the sunset, it was positively perfect. Joe knew just where to cruise around and how to get the perfect view for our ceremony and the fireworks. The catered food was delicious, from what my guests tell me, and the drinks were flowing. The crew was very polite and accommodating. I only withheld the 5th star b/c Joe's not very detail oriented, which stressed me out, but trust him when he says he knows what he is doing. He does!!

I'm really very surprised by the poor reviews and in fact was really nervous abt how my event was going to turn out based on the reviews, but I'm glad we pushed forward anyway. This event was for a small business group after a long, full day of meetings. We chartered the Gypsy Spirit, ordered through their catering and paid for unlimited alcohol. Captain Joe met us in the parking lot because we were lost. He was great. Very friendly and courteous to my Executive staff and everyone in my group. Angela was wonderful and extremely patient with me throughout the booking as I'd made so many changes to our menu up to two days before the event. The yacht itself was in great condition and the perfect fit for my party of 14. My biggest concern was whether the food was going to taste good and it was great! The route that Capt Joe took was perfect too - a quick trip on the lake and then through the river and back. Total of 3 hours. I fell in love with the city skyline. Comments from my group: "PERFECT" "IT WAS SO RELAXING" "WHAT A TREAT" What more could I have asked for? Okay maybe some dramamine but how was I supposed to know? I'm bummed that the previous reviewers had such a bad time, but our event was an enormous success.

Photo of Laura P.

For weeks, I hemmed and hawwed over what to do to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. I really wanted to do something special for him but every time I thought of an idea, a road block would present itself and I would move on. Finally, I decided to charter a yacht cruise for the party and went to work finding the right boat. Prior to booking with Free Spirit, I read the other reviews posted on Yelp but they did not dissuade me because my experience from the get go was quite different than what is described by other reviewers. Angela was very nice and accommodating from the start. Her Free Spirit boat was available on the date I wanted and we started a plan. I was able to order catering directly through the boat and they did not mind at all that I wanted to bring a cake and sweets from our favorite bakery instead of getting that through the boat caterer. We also discussed a bad weather plan and her thoughts were a great comfort to me - if the weather was only a little bad, we would still go out and see the Navy Pier fireworks. If the weather was REALLY bad, we could still have the party aboard the boat and just stay at the dock. I felt we covered all the bases. On the night of the party, after days and days of pure sunshine, the clouds were rolling in and the wind was blowing. Angela and Captain Joe and their staff kept me well informed of the plan - we were going to stay at the dock for a little while and just wait and see what developed on the radar. When we eventually did go out, they continued awesome communication with me and our guests by letting people know that the waves would feel rocky at times and to please inform them if anyone was feeling sick at all. Out of our 50 guests, there were probably 5 who didn't feel well but no one got truly sick. The weather did NOT ruin our evening. Everyone had a fantastic time and we got so many nice e-mails and phone calls from our guests saying what a good time they had. I loved my experience on the Free Spirit and working with Angela and Joe. I will recommend their services without any hesitation to future clients looking for a really fun and unique way to celebrate a special occasion. Our fun night on the lake made me wish we could make a Saturday night cruise a weekly occurrence!

Photo of Jessica F.

I agree with the previous review, I too would give it zero stars if I could. I had the same thing happen to me, I previously booked with another company who had engine problems however since a Free Spirit Yacht Cruises boat was available we could still have the party. It should have raised a red flag that they had a boat available on such short notice in the middle of summer. When we first got on the boat everyone in my party were trying to be nice to Joe but he just would not have it. He wasn't friendly, inviting, accommodating. For example, a friend of mine asked him to change the song not realizing that we controlled that ourselves. Joe simply said "Do I look like a fucking DJ"? David was extremely nice but until he becomes the captain I will never be back and I encourage you not to book with them either.

The sober cruises trend: Best cruise lines for mocktails, plus alcohol-free charters

Kristy Tolley

Cruises are often seen as one big booze fest at sea, and for good reason. As soon as you step on board, friendly servers make the rounds with trays teeming with rum punches and glasses of Champagne to celebrate the beginning of your vacation. That party vibe often continues throughout your time on the ship.

However, many cruisers don't imbibe for various reasons. They might be in recovery, pregnant, taking medication that can't interact with alcohol or abstaining from alcohol as part of their healthy lifestyle. The sober-curious movement is growing, and cruise lines are responding.

Sober cruises are often organized by vendors specializing in them (more on that below) and are available on various major cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Princess Cruises and others. These cruises offer a bevy of cruise activities and entertainment you'd find on a traditional cruise. The difference is these sailings don't involve alcohol.

You don't need to book a specific alcohol-free sailing, though. Several cruise lines are joining the mocktail movement. Passengers have many more nonalcoholic options — from separate zero-proof menus to a few nonalcoholic concoctions on the regular beverage menu.

If you're looking for a completely alcohol-free experience at sea or just want to sample more zero-proof cocktails during your cruise vacation, we have you covered. Here's everything you need to know about sober cruises and which cruise lines offer the best alcohol-free drink options.

Related: More than a trend: How airlines and hotels are catering to sober travelers

Cruise lines with the best nonalcoholic cocktails

Planning a sober cruise or simply want to mix up your drinking with some alcohol-free cocktails? A few cruise lines stand out as providing fantastic zero-proof beverages for nondrinkers. While some lines offer a separate mocktail menu, others provide a nice list of nonalcoholic drinks on standard bar menus.

Carnival Cruise Line

free spirit yacht cruises

You don't have to drink alcohol to enjoy your time on a Fun Ship, thanks to Carnival 's partnership with Lyre's, the world's most awarded line of nonalcoholic spirits.

Passengers can order spirit-free versions of seven classic cocktails in the line's Alchemy Bar . This popular venue is on 19 ships in Carnival's 27-vessel fleet. Options include the refreshing Martini Seduction, made with Lyre's White Cane, red passion fruit nectar, freshly squeezed lime juice and a smidgen of orange. The Spicy Chipotle Pineapple Martini showcases Lyre's Agave Blanco, handcrafted chipotle pineapple syrup, pineapple juice and mint leaves. Nonalcoholic versions of Restorative Basil Drop, The Remedy, The Perfect Storm, Hearts of Fire and Cucumber Sunrise cocktails are also available. Nonalcoholic cocktails at Alchemy Bar cost $10.

Carnival's main dining rooms also serve Lyre's alcohol-free prosecco.

Mocktails and zero-proof frozen drinks are covered under the line's Cheers drink package . Purchase your package online before you sail for a discounted price.

Celebrity Cruises

free spirit yacht cruises

Celebrity Cruises incorporates nonalcoholic options within its regular cocktail menus. Zero-proof cocktails include Sparkling Mint Lemonade (fresh lemon juice, mint, agave nectar and soda water) and the Watermelon Tropic (watermelon syrup, pineapple juice and fresh lime juice). You can also order O'Doul's nonalcoholic beer on board.

Additionally, the line has a nonalcoholic drink package for zero-proof beverages. Water and sodas are included in the package and not offered as a separate package as some cruise lines do.

Every Celebrity drink package includes mocktails, premium coffees and teas. However, the nonalcoholic drink package also includes Vitamin Water, Red Bull and premium waters like Evian and San Pellegrino, as well as fresh juices and smoothies from The Spa Cafe. If you drink few, if any, alcoholic drinks but need your daily morning latte, this package is for you. Plus, you can splurge on smoothies and virgin frozen drinks.

Holland America

Passengers on Holland America cruises will find a selection of nonalcoholic drinks and mocktails throughout the ship's drinking and dining venues. While the cruise line does not offer separate zero-proof menus, mocktails are listed on the Lido, Seaview and Cabana bar menus. Choose from the Ginger Mango Splash (made with mango puree and ginger), the Melon Mint No'jito (with fresh mint, melon and Sprite) and a bevy of virgin frozen drinks (pineapple, pina colada, banana, etc.)

The cost for alcohol-free drinks (including frozen beverages) is $7.50. If you don't see something you like on the menu, bartenders can create a specialty mocktail to your liking, according to the line.

Two nonalcoholic beverage packages are available for Holland America cruisers: the Quench Package and the Coca-Cola package. Mocktails are included in the Quench Package, along with unlimited premium coffees (espresso and cappuccino), juices, Coca-Cola products, Red Bull and bottled water. As the name implies, the Coca-Cola package includes unlimited fountain sodas but not mocktails.

MSC Cruises

free spirit yacht cruises

If you're scaling back alcohol consumption on an MSC Cruises sailing, you'll have a good selection. The line features a separate premium mocktails menu with seven creative zero-proof drinks. Among them are the Fair Lady, made with honey and apricot marmalade, lemongrass syrup, fresh lemon juice and egg white; the Cucumber Mojito, with fresh lime juice, mint leaves, brown sugar, club soda, cucumber and lime slices; and the Paloma Fizz, a blend of fresh grapefruit and lemon juices, rose syrup, tonic water and rosemary).

MSC's alcohol-free drink package includes nonalcoholic cocktails, fresh fruit and protein smoothies, energy drinks, sodas, flavored and bottled mineral water, and a variety of hot beverages. The line's Easy Package offers both alcoholic and nonalcoholic options. Choose this option if not everyone in your cruise group imbibes; MSC requires that everyone sharing a cabin purchases the drink package if one person does. The package includes cocktails, spirits, beer, fountain drinks, specialty coffees, nonalcoholic cocktails and mixed drinks.

Beverage package pricing is based on the length of your cruise, with longer voyages having a lower price per day. If you purchase the package before your cruise, you can save at least 15% on the price you will pay once you board. Note that gratuities are already baked into the price of the drink packages.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian 's mocktail game is strong. In 2023, the line earned an award for Best Adult Alcohol-Free Program at the Vibe Vista Awards, which distinguishes outstanding beverage programs across the travel industry.

Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva feature the most extensive nonalcoholic beverage menus. However, ships with a Vibe Beach Club also have nonalcoholic beverage options. Vibe Beach Club is an exclusive adults-only sundeck on Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva. Zero-free options include the Espresso Notini, made with a nonalcoholic amaretto liqueur, and the Smoky Water, created with a nonalcoholic red vermouth.

Additionally, the line features a couple of mocktail options on regular bar menus.

The mocktails are included in the Unlimited Open Bar drink package. Take advantage of the line's Free at Sea promotion to get this package for free (though you'll still need to pay a 20% gratuity, based on the package's list price).

Oceania Cruises

free spirit yacht cruises

Those sailing with Oceania Cruises have a nice selection of nonalcoholic cocktails featured on many of the line's standard bar menus, as well as a separate mocktail menu available at Aquamar Kitchen. Standouts include the Pure Amalfi Spritz, made with Lyre's Italian Spritz, nonalcoholic sparkling wine and club soda; the NO-Groni, a blend of Lyre's Dry London Spirit, Lyre's Italian Orange and Lyre's Aperitif Rosso; and Orchard Fizz, Lyre's Amaretto, fresh lemon juice, maple syrup, apple juice, tonic water and rosemary. The cost of mocktails is $12.

Passengers can choose between two beverage packages, both of which include nonalcoholic drinks. The House Select package comes with premium Champagnes and wines, beers, still and sparkling water, premium coffees and teas, freshly squeezed juices, cocktails and spirits. However, it can only be used during meals or room service and not at onboard bars or lounges. The cost for the House Select package is $39.95 per guest, per day. It is included in the line's SimplyMore program.

You can upgrade your House Select package to the Prestige Select package, which provides unlimited beverages anywhere on the ship, for an additional $30 per guest, per day.

Royal Caribbean

free spirit yacht cruises

Cruisers on Royal Caribbean sailings will have a great selection of nonalcoholic drinks. The line first added a zero-proof menu to its fleet in 2021 and has since curated a creative menu of specialty mocktails and added it to each bar's drinks menu. Among the available beverages are the All Aboard Spritz, with lime juice, cranberry juice, desert pear syrup and club soda; the Blueberry Nojito, with blueberry puree, lime juice, simple syrup and fresh mint; and the Tropical Crush, a blend of pineapple juice, mango and Red Bull Yellow Edition. Zero-proof cocktails are priced at $7.

The line's Refreshment Package and Deluxe Beverage Package include mocktails (along with premium coffees and teas, freshly squeezed juices, bottled water and milkshakes from Johnny Rockets). Purchase a Royal Caribbean drink package online in advance of sailing for the best prices.

free spirit yacht cruises

In 2024, Seabourn rolled out a robust new zero-proof mixology program called Zero @ Sea. The program debuted an impressive selection of creative alcohol-free versions of popular cocktails.

The menu features the Amalfi Spritz, made with nonalcoholic rose wine and Lyre's Italian Orange; a Ginny 'n Tonic, with Optimist Bright (a botanical forward alcohol-free spirit), grapefruit and elderflower; and Ginger Blossom, with Seedlip Groove 42 (a citrus-flavored nonalcoholic spirit), elderflower and ginger ale, among other mocktails.

Zero @ Sea cocktails are available fleetwide in all bars and lounges aboard the ships. Additionally, Seabourn upgraded its selection of nonalcoholic wines, sparkling wines and beers, providing more options for passengers who don't drink alcohol. Seabourn's cruise fares include premium wines and spirits, including Zero @ Sea cocktails.

Silversea Cruises

free spirit yacht cruises

Known for its SALT (Sea and Land Taste) culinary program, luxury line Silversea Cruises puts as much attention into what passengers drink as to what they eat. That ethos flows into its creative mocktail offerings.

Dubbed "Zero Degrees but equally as delicious," the line's designated alcohol-free menu lists refreshing signature drinks made with nonalcoholic distilled spirits like Seedlip and Martini Vibrante. Options include Latitude, a botanical-forward and smoky beverage made with Seedlip Garden 108, Seedlip Grove 42, pink grapefruit, honey, lime and Amalfi lime tonic, and Equatorial, a citrusy, fizzy mocktail that blends Martini Vibrante, orange and pink citrus tonic.

Each of the line's bar menus features a selection of zero-proof cocktails on the last page.

Silversea's all-inclusive model means passengers can enjoy complimentary beverages, including zero-proof cocktails, anywhere on the ship without purchasing a separate drink package to do so.

Virgin Voyages

It might be surprising that an adults-only cruise line that offers the ability to get a bottle of Champagne with a simple shake of your phone would have such robust mocktail offerings. However, many of the 20-plus dining venues on Virgin Voyages ' Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady offer separate drink menus that feature handcrafted mocktails. You can also order spirit-free versions of classic favorites like pina coladas, bloody marys and Moscow mules throughout the ships.

The line's Test Kitchen features an extensive mocktail menu curated by mixologist Julia Momosé, James Beard Award-winning author and the brainchild behind Kumiko, Chicago's acclaimed Japanese dining bar. Guests can also enjoy nonalcoholic options during the afternoon high tea service in the Sip Lounge.

The line doesn't sell traditional drink packages. However, cruisers can prepurchase a Bar Tab (you can't buy it once you're on the ship) to use for themselves or buy a round for fellow passengers. You can purchase the tab in increments of $100, $200 or $300 and use it to buy fresh-pressed juices, barista-crafted specialty coffees and mocktails.

Sober cruises and Friends of Bill W.

If you're in recovery and planning to take a cruise, look for " Friends of Bill W. " gatherings in your cruise line's daily activities newsletter.

Bill W. refers to Bill Wilson, one of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. "Friends of Bill W." is code for AA meetings, providing recovering alcoholics support during their sailings, especially if they find it challenging to be around others drinking alcohol. Most sailings offer these meetups on board.

While booking a traditional cruise might be ideal for some, others might wish to join a group of like-minded travelers. If that's you, consider booking your cruise through a travel company that specializes in sober cruising packages. These itineraries go beyond onboard Friends of Bill W. meetings and feature additional programming like special recovery speakers, workshops and events that support an alcohol-free lifestyle.

Sober Celebrations , Travel Sober , One Day at a Time Cruises , Sober Vacations International and Hooked are a few companies worth checking out. Through them, you'll find itineraries on cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, AmaWaterways, MSC Cruises and Princess Cruises to various destinations. Itineraries include Alaska, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Christmas market river cruises are also available.

Bottom line

The alcohol-free vacation trend has gained momentum over the last few years. As a result, cruise lines have upgraded their zero-proof offerings with designated mocktail menus and nonalcoholic cocktails included on traditional drink menus.

If you don't want to feel like all of the activity on board revolves around drinking, seek out destination-intensive itineraries or cruises that offer lots of activities. Ships that provide lots of top-deck attractions, culinary classes, trivia games, shows or onboard workshops mean you have more ways to spend your time. Or, consider a sober cruise so you can cruise with a group of nondrinkers who will join you in alcohol-free fun.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

free spirit yacht cruises

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

free spirit yacht cruises

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

free spirit yacht cruises

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

free spirit yacht cruises

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

free spirit yacht cruises

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

free spirit yacht cruises

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

free spirit yacht cruises

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Kremlin

Moscow : The first day is arrival day. You are welcome on board! Check in starts at 14:00 (2.00 PM), but you may arrive earlier or later on that day. If you order a transfer you will be met at the airport or train station by one of our drivers and taken by a comfortable car to the river port where you will board your cruise ship (transfer is OPTIONAL).

Over the next few days you will have a chance to explore Moscow and learn about its riveting history. You will be taken on a city tour where you will see Moscow's most interesting sights and learn about this amazing city's past and present. You will also have a chance to do some light shopping and there will be time to relax aboard the ship in the evenings. One of the highlights of your time in Moscow is a visit to Red Square  and the Kremlin . You will also visit one of the Kremlin's famous cathedrals. The Kremlin as we know it today was rebuilt as a stone structure during the beginning of the 14th century but the actual site had been inhabited and used as a fortified city wall for centuries before this period. The Kremlin is truly a fascinating structure - at the same time it is an ancient tower, the city's former military fortification, a palace and the workplace of the Russian President. The Kremlin is the center of Russia's political life and State power and has been home to Tsars, General Secretaries of the Soviet Union and Russian Presidents.

Moscow is Russia's political and financial capital as well as a major world class cultural center. The city includes many must see attractions from the Kremlin and Red Square to the Assumption Cathedral. Moscow is the largest city in Europe. It is unique in that it blends the ancient with the modern. See medieval structures among modern office buildings, walk down crooked old city streets opening up to wide busy boulevards. It is a fantastic city and truly a site that shouldn't be missed.

free spirit yacht cruises

Uglich : You will be taken to the walking city tour with visit to Kremlin , the Church of St. Demitrius on the Blood and the Transfiguration cathedral .

Uglich was founded in 1148 as a small princedom bordering on Muscovy, Uglich is one of the most beloved towns in Old Russia. The view of the town as you approach it from the Volga River is breathtaking with the Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. John´s Church rising up on the horizon. The history of the town is fascinating; At the end of the 16th century, Maria Nagaya, seventh wife of Ivan the Terrible, lived in honorary exile at the Kremlin in Uglich. It was here in her garden that the 10 year old Prince Dmitry of the Rurik Dynasty, heir to the Russian throne was murdered by Boris Godunov who wanted to seize power for himself. On the spot of his death, the Church of St. Demitrius of the Blood was built and still stands today. The death of Prince Dmitri brought on the start of the Time of Troubles, a dynastic and political crises and one of the most tumultuous periods in Russian history which ended 15 years later after the election of a new Tsar Mikhail Romanov (the first Tsar of the Romanov Dynasty). Inside the Kremlin the oldest building in Uglich, the Palace of Tsarevich Dmitry also stands. During your time in Uglich you will learn more about the town's past and walk along the paths of Russian history.

free spirit yacht cruises

Yaroslavl : You will be taken to the panoramic city tour with a visit to a local market (free time). You will also see the Church of Elijah the Prophet (exterior), Church of St Nicholas (interior) and enjoy an interactive tour of former Governor's House (and visit to an Art Gallery).

Yaroslavl : Stretching for 18 miles on both banks of the Volga , Yaroslavl is an important Volga port with a population of 600,000. It was founded in the 1010 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise and is one of the ancient Russian cities making up the Golden Ring . It was destroyed by the Tatars in the 13th and 14th centuries but then restored and rebuilt and by the 17th century it had become Russia's second largest city after Moscow and an important cultural and political center. Today, Yaroslavl retains many noteworthy monuments of its colorful past. Of special interest is the magnificent 13th century Spassky Monastery ensemble, a group of majestic 17th century cathedrals, an elegant rotunda and remnants of an ancient trading center. The churches of St. Nicholas and Elijah the Prophet have some of the Golden Ring's most impressive frescoes.

free spirit yacht cruises

Goritsy : You'll tour the St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery and Museum of Icons .

Goritsy is a tiny settlement 7 kilometers from the St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery. The remains of the Nunnery of the Resurrection that sits on the banks of the Sheksna River can be visited and is within a quarter of a mile of where the ship stops. Goritsy is definitely a site to see for anyone with an interest in Russian history. St. Cyril on the White Lake was founded in 1397 by Kirill Belosersky on the shore of Lake Siverskoye. The monastery had wide trade in the 15th to 17th centuries and was used as a fortress to protect Russia's nobility during the Times of Troubles.

After the tour you will return to your ship and set sail in the direction of St. Petersburg along the Volga Baltic Canal. The Volga Baltic Canal is a series of canals and rivers that connect the Volga river to the Baltic Sea.

free spirit yacht cruises

You'll cruise along Europe's second largest lake, Lake Onega and arrive on the island of Kizhi . Here you will visit a fascinating open air museum containing numerous examples of elaborate Russian, wooden architecture.

Kizhi Island : Via the Volga Baltic Canal, our cruise takes us to the tiny island of Kizhi, located at the northern end of Lake Onega. The island is renowned for its open-air Museum of Architecture , which is assembled from over 80 monuments of wooden architecture from various areas of the country and restored to form a glimpse of the past. The most impressive site on the island is the Church of the Transfiguration or Preobrazhenskaya (the church of twenty-two wooden domes). This masterpiece of architecture, featuring five tiers of 22 domes, was built in 1714 without the use of a single nail, only an axe and pine trees. The church magically changes color as the day grows old, it is certainly one of the most interesting things you will see during your time in Russia.

free spirit yacht cruises

Mandrogui : Enjoy walking around this traditional Russian village in its beautiful setting and spending a day of rest, relaxation and fun. We will have a fantastic barbeque picnic on the banks of the river featuring one of Russia's favorite specialties - shashlik (meat shish kebab prepared on an outdoor fire). You will love it!

Mandrogui : is really more of a living museum than a live-in village. It features a collection of old wooden houses and is geared towards showing visitors what a traditional Russian village resembled in the past. One of the features here is the Vodka Museum, which contains thousands of different brands and types of Russia's favorite pastime.

Peterhof

St. Petersburg : Your time in St. Petersburg will begin with a Panoramic City Tour . This tour is the best way to get acquainted with all of the city's major highlights. Our professional guide will take you down Nevsky Prospect , St. Petersburg's most famous and vibrant thoroughfare. There you will see some of the city's most interesting architectural monuments including the Kazan Cathedral (exterior) and the Winter Palace. You will see the Peter and Paul Fortress (interior) - a symbol of St. Petersburg and also the oldest building in the city.

One of the highlights of your entire cruise will be a visit to the Hermitage , Russia's premier museum containing one of the largest art collections in the world. The museum consists of five historical buildings including the Winter Palace - the residence of the Russian Tsars. The museum contains over 3 million pieces of art with dates ranging from high antiquity to the present day. Among the Hermitage's treasures are artworks by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens and many others.

During your time in St. Petersburg you will also visit Peterhof - former summer residence of the Russian Emperors, located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. You will see the Lower Park - a genuine masterpiece of landscape design which can compete with Versailles in France. The park includes over 150 fountains and 4 monumental cascades.

On the last day of your cruise you will say goodbye to Russia, your ship's crew and the many new friends we are sure you will have met during your time with us. We are sure that your memories of the trip will last a lifetime and we look forward to welcoming you to Russia sometime in the future. Our driver will meet you at the ship and take you to the airport to see you off (transfer is optional).

St. Petersburg is Russia's second largest and second most important city - the Northern capital of the country, Russia's cultural center, and considered the world's "Northern Venice" due to its extensive system of canals and islands. Walk along Nevsky Prospect and experience the grandeur of pre-revolutionary imperial Russia. Pass palaces from the past and gaze at the famous embankment of the Neva River with its numerous bridges and striking architecture. St. Petersburg is also home to Russia's largest and busiest port and with its many world class theaters and museums has a very high level of cultural life
