J/42 is a 41 ′ 11 ″ / 12.8 m monohull sailboat designed by Rod Johnstone and built by J Boats between 1999 and 2005.

Drawing of J/42

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Shoal draft version draws 5.5’.

The J42 is a 42.0ft masthead sloop designed by Johnstone and built in fiberglass by J Boats between 1999 and 2005.

35 units have been built..

The J42 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser. The fuel capacity is originally small. There is a good water supply range.

, but how does their construction quality and general "toughness" compare to its competitors?

can anyone suggest any alternatives? looking for something around 40' for a multi-year . there will be two on board (myself + girlfriend) and i'd like something quick, tough-enough for the occasional grounding and foul , and with adaquet space for normal and room for two sets of .

thanks in advance.

. I used to teach on and J-24's. I have never seen any model J-Boat that I would consider to be a poor design or of poor construction. I think they are a fine foundation to start from so long as they have been maintained. As a long distance cruiser, I have no idea how good they are. A good cruiser does not necessarily mean a that is heavy. Medium and light displacement can be excellent cruisers as well. Its all in the design.

They are indeed nice looking boats....

as well as extra sets of snorkel gear on our 30', 9.5' beam sailboat for 7 years of cruising. I think you'll be able to squeeze it into a J42

. in my lifetime of sailing i've *never* been in a situation where both heads were simultaneously occupied - at least with any urgency, anyhow. (my entire two-head experience has been on a 470, where, quite honestly i think they installed the second only because they couldn't figure out what else to do with the space - after all, they already had a waster/dryer!)

shape. They are good sailing boats as were the 40. They are not a very roomy boat for the length and the smaller volume will probably be more affected by the wieght of the cruising gear you will want to carry.

Boat: J Boats J42 42'
. There's a lot of confusion about the J-42 because of its pedigree, but Rod Johnstone designed her both as a fast, comfortable cruising boat for two couples, and in homage to the traditional sloops before the advent of the transom and shapes of recent vintage. Her hull and decks are fully balsa cored, which scares some people away, but the proven result has been a light, rigid structure with an ability to withstand hard groundings, and take a pounding in adverse conditions. Of the 75 built between 1996 and 2006, all are still in active use. My wife and I sailed from to the in 12 days with another 5 days to Lisbon. With tankage for 60 gals of and 100 gals of water she could for more than 70 hours at 7 kts in calm conditions. Her 56 hp could muscle through a nasty chop against 17 kts of at 6 kts. With copious storage capabilities we carried 5000 lbs of stuff, and had to raise the waterline by about 6 inches, but her 7-8 kt. cruising speed under or sail didn't seem to be affected. My wife and I have aged out of our need for our beauty, Cayenne, and she is , but she will remain in our hearts and memories for the rest of our lives.

Boat: a sailing boat
as any other boat. Since you already own this, there is little reason to look elsewhere.

When we were in NZ, we met a happy couple sailing a J35. All the way from . I talked with them about boats and they said the only problem they had was the upper bearing that they had to replace. But that was not due to anything else than the bearing's age (it was not a new boat).

Back to your post, my opinion is that boats should not be chosen based on how well they take groundings. Boats are not military barges. Boats are terns. They should be built to sail well. The same applies to taking bad . Heavy hulls tend to be slow and clumsy, hence they will take more punishment in heavy weather. Mind most damage comes from waves. A heavy design is like that rock on which Jesus built his lighthouse (I believe in Brittany, you may have seen pictures of). A lighter boat will dissipate some of that energy in movement. And a lighter boat will be faster too - hence spend less time in bad weather.

etc
ymmv

I would go in a J42, and mostly any other J. Anytime. And mostly anywhere (except ice).

. When they got to , they talked to the local J44 fleet, and more than one boat had replaced the stock rudder with a more balanced version. One of the boats was on its 3rd rudder, and they bought and installed its second rudder. Unfortunately, that rudder failed mid Atlantic 500 miles from completing their circumnavigation. They tried drogues and towing for 3 days and eventually abandoned their boat. It showed up later on the rocks in .

2001 J Boats J/42

The J/42 has become legendary for ease of operation and impressive stability. This design has won nearly every major cruising canvas race in the Caribbean as well as the Annapolis-Newport Race. The original J/42 was further refined in the J/42 "L" to include features sought by the cruising sailor who plans to make the boat a home. The interior of the J/42L is elegantly finished in varnished cherry with paneled doors. Interior hull surfaces in staterooms are lined with cherry battens. An "L" shaped settee with pullout double-berth to port, fold-up main cabin table with storage rack and redesigned settees create an entirely new and more spacious main cabin. The forepeak cabin is changed to include a fixed double-V berth with drawers and lockers underneath plus full-length shelves with higher fiddles and a centerline cabinet above the berths. Similar changes were made in the aft double-cabin. My favorite feature is the Stainless Bimini-Arch. Instead of having GPS, Radar, etc. on separate mounts off the stern rail and a floppy canvas Bimini; Thurston (Wickford, RI) made a rigid stainless Bimini with a lightweight fiberglass top. Mounted on top is a solar panel array, radar, and all antennas, which provides better protection while at the helm and a more elegant solution to the jungle of accessories normally found on cruising boats. Hejira is a 2001 J/42L with a carbon rig and shoal draft keel. She has been well maintained and upgraded by knowledgable owners. Over this past winter, she benefited from $9000 of electrical upgrades, including: Two Lifeline Battery AGM GPL 4DL 12V 210AH 2 and Victron DC-DC Orion TR Smart Charger--$4,944.54 Victron Inverter/Charger Multi Plus 12V/3000W- 120V 1 with Victron Remote Multi Control GX --$4032.33 Balmar Regulator MC-618 with Balmar Temperature Probes for Alternator and Batteries --$980.66 Aside from the electrical work, she was also recently upgraded with the following : Sanded, Re-glassed and Painted Topsides (2018) Spectra water maker (2018) Replaced forward head hoses and macerator pump (2020) New Sea Frost refrigerator and freezer (2022) New solar panels (2022) New Raymarine electronics (2023) Schedule a visit to see HEJIRA in person! She will be bouncing around the Northeast for the remainder of the season. We can bring her to you, or find a place to meet in the middle.
