  3. Laser vs Aero vs Melges? That's Not the Question

Ever since the RS Aero first appeared, everyone seems focused on the question "Which is the better boat, the Aero or the Laser?". As the Melges 14 gains steam, the question will be which is best of the three. That's not the important question. At all. Both the new boats are surely better than the Laser. They're 40 years newer and have ...

  4. RS Aero: the "new Laser"?

The boat is the RS Aero. The new RS Aero looks set to appeal to a wide range of people. The company, behind so many successful designs like the RS200 (see RS200: an asymmetric doublehander for lightweights ), RS400 and RS800 to name but a few, suggests we think of the RS Aero as "a 21 st century Laser". The most fundamental difference being the ...

  6. Test sailing the RS Aero

Matthew Sheahan sails the new RS Aero, a brand new and staggeringly light single hander, a boat so light it weighs less than many people's launching trolleys

  7. RS Aero

Even with the smallest RS Aero rig the sail-area : hull-weight ratio is significantly higher than most existing hiking single-handers, due to the incredibly light weight of the RS Aero. So even the RS Aero 5 enjoys the amazingly responsive feel that makes the boat so exciting. The largest rig is 5.5kg lighter than the equivalent in aluminium ...

  8. Melges 14 vs RS Aero

2,758. 8. Aug 27, 2016. #4. No idea what the boats are like, but you live in the UK, which means you're within striking distance of RS headquarters. That means support, spares, probably more boats around, maybe even a circuit. All for the RS Aero. Melges 14 is newer, but would be shipped from NA, have minimal support once you've broken things ...

  9. RS Aero, the Laser of the year 2020 for single-handed sailing pleasure

The RS Aero is lighter (50% weight saving). Its 35 kg hull can easily be transported on the roof of a car. Fully equipped, the RS Aero weighs only 48 kg. It is also a fun dinghy thanks to 3 mainsail areas (5, 7 and 9 m2) to adapt to the weight of the crew (or even to the wind conditions). The 2-part mast for easy transport is made of carbon.

  10. Aero v Laser : r/dinghysailing

The Aero is a much 'sportier' boat in my opinion; higher performance, was designed with foiling at least somewhat in mind. Major downsides for me are a) cost (both upfront, and parts) and b) they're an absolute faff to rig (seems to be a common theme with RS vs Laser tbh), which isn't a massive deal once you're used to it, but you're gonna be spending more time in the boatyard rigging.

  11. The push for the RS Aero to replace the Laser continues : r/sailing

The push for the RS Aero to replace the Laser continues. Earlier this year, the equipment committee of World Sailing recommended the replacement of the Laser dinghy by the more modern RS Aero for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This was after many sailors tested different options: D-Zero, Laser, Melges 14 and RS Aero.

  17. small boat sailors: do you enjoy sailing sunfish or lasers ...

I think laser cockpit is more comfortable than sunfish or hobie. Better place to put your legs. Lasers are a great race boat and not much else. They're great if you want a core workout. If this is your goal and you have this level of experience, you might consider one of the more modern boats like an RS aero or moth.

  18. ILCA/Laser to RS Aero

Aero is much lighter, advanced and easier to sail than ILCA, but the new ILCA MK II sail and improved rigging are a significant improvements. I live nearby in WY and can guarantee if you want to race an Aero from CO you will be driving a loooonngg way to race against a handful of boats. Oct 27, 2023. #9. J.

  20. Is the Laser the ultimate dinghy? : r/dinghysailing

RS aero is gonna be too expensive for a cruiser, laser would work but you seem to want something more casual. An affordable option is the sunfish, there are a million of them around and if you change your mind on racing it's a very welcoming fleet or all ability levels.

  22. World Sailing's Evaluation of 2024 Single Person Dinghy ...

RS says the hull design of the Aero was engineered (see page 2 on their brochure) so that weight wouldn't be as _much_ of an issue as with the Laser. I guess there is no getting around an optimal body type in any class, though. My take away is that the Laser class problems have likely doomed their future.

  23. Why is the RS Quest the right sailboat for you?

While the RS Quest is great for all sorts of sailors, it has specifically been identified as the optimal sailing program boat for youth and adult sailors. The versatility, value, and durability are optimal for almost any sailing program. As boats age and replacement parts are no longer available, many programs have recognized the fit for the RS ...

  24. Comparing Downwind Stability

The Aero rig can take more vang downwind than a Laser, keeping the sail behind the mast. 3. The Aero rudder is deeper in the water and actually works to steer the boat, allowing more control to keep the boat under the rig. 4. Being light weight, the Aero gets up on a plane in the gusts, goes faster, reducing the apparent wind pressure on the rig.
