J.P. Morgan's Corsair IV
When J.P. Morgan Junior took delivery of the Corsair IV in 1930, she was the largest and most luxurious private yacht ever built in the USA. Morgan used her for a decade, mainly on the East Coast and in the Caribbean, before gifting her to the British Admiralty to help with the war effort.
After WWII she re-entered service as a cruise ship, plying routes in Alaska and from Long Beach California down to Mexico. The photo below shows her in Vancouver, 1948. Less than a year later she struck a rock and sank in shallow waters off Acapulco.
The story began in 1882 when J.P. Morgan Senior, one of the world's richest men and an avid yachtsman, bought the 185-foot steamship Corsair . He then commissioned the bigger, faster and more luxurious Corsair II (which the US Navy conscripted into service as a gunboat during the Spanish-American War) and the 304-foot Corsair III , a superyacht that featured a full-beam library, cases of wine and brandy, and humidors stocked with Cuban cigars.
Each of these three yachts generated great publicity, but media attention was particularly intense when the Corsair III was launched in 1898. It was at this time that Morgan made one of the most famous comments ever recorded. When a journalist asked him how much it would cost to operate a yacht of this size, Morgan replied:
Sir, if you have to ask that question, you can't afford it.

The Corsair IV
The Corsair IV was commissioned by J.P. Morgan Junior and built at Bath Iron Works, Maine. When she was launched in April 1930 she measured 343 feet in length and was the largest private yacht ever constructed in the USA. Nicknamed the "Princess of the Sea", she was an object of beauty with her black hull, clipper bow and elegant teak interiors. Morgan adored her, and reveled in the privacy she afforded him. One of his annual guests while cruising in Europe was the UK's Archbishop of Canterbury, and on one memorable occasion the two of them sailed across the Mediterranean to the Holy Land.
Following the outbreak of WWII and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, most privately-owned yachts in America were requisitioned by the US Maritime Commission and converted for use as gunships or patrol boats. For reasons which aren't entirely clear, Morgan gave the Corsair IV not to the US Navy but to the British Admiralty. Based in Bermuda, she served out the war as a patrol ship in the Western Atlantic.
Life as a Cruise Ship
After the war there was a dearth of cruise ships on America's West Coast. Many of the great Canadian Pacific and Japanese liners that serviced this coastline in the 1920s and 1930s had been lost in sea battles or fallen victim to mines. To plug this gap, the Pacific Cruise Lines company was formed in 1946 and promptly snapped up J.P. Morgan's Corsair IV . The yacht was re-named Corsair and taken to Canada to be converted to a luxury cruise liner.
With accommodation for 82 passengers and a crew of 76, the new Corsair exuded luxury. Staterooms were not only bigger and better equipped than rival ships, they were fitted with carpets and air-conditioning (almost unheard of at the time), and included furnishings made from the finest materials. The Corsair debuted in September 1947, offering two-week cruises from California to Acapulco. Ticket prices were high, but in booming post-war America, so was the demand.
The Corsair was a great success. Her cruises sold out well in advance and her popularity exceeded anything her new owners had imagined. Before long she switched from Mexico to Alaska and became the first ship to offer luxury cruises to the Inside Passage. Soon after she reverted to Mexico, the Panama Canal and across the Caribbean to Havana. And then tragedy struck: in November 1949 the Corsair hit a rock off the coast of Acapulco and sank. Fortunately none of her 55 passengers or crew were harmed.
Made in China: the Nero
In the early years of this century, British entrepreneur Neil Taylor began hunting for a classic yacht to restore and re-model along the lines of the Corsair IV . When he couldn't find what he wanted, Taylor set up his own company, Corsair Yachts, and commissioned a near replica of J.P. Morgan's yacht from Yantai Raffles Shipyard in China. Launched in 2008, the sleek, black-hulled superyacht was christened Nero . The following year she triumphed in the "Best Motor Yacht Over 75 Metres" category at the ShowBoats Design Awards.
In 2014 the Nero was bought by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien. Two years later he had her refurbished in Spain, requesting that she be brought up to European standards and given a classic, contemporary elegance. The Nero is now available for summer charters in the Mediterranean and winter service in the Caribbean & Bahamas. Since her introduction to the charter circuit she has won praise for her fusion of old-world charm and tasteful styling, with many clients commenting positively on her spacious interiors, Ralph Lauren decor and relaxed living environments.

TENDERS, TOYS & ACTIVITIES
Not exactly what J.P.Morgan would have found on his Corsair yacht, but NERO sits firmly in the 21st Century with her enormous array of water sports equipment. ACCOMODATION
A spectacular duplex master suite with separate lounge, study, and his-and-hers bathrooms is the highlight of NERO’s accommodation. The master suite is located on the main deck and enjoys direct access to the observation lounge and pool.
A stylish VIP suite is located on the lower deck, with a spacious bedroom, a private lounge space, a large bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub, his-and-hers sinks, and a separate shower.

J.P. Morgan's Corsair III in Venice 1902
As the name probably indicates, this was the third of j.p. morgan's and j.p. morgan junior's four steam yachts to bear the name "corsair". like most wealthy yacht owners of his day, each of mr. morgan's yachts was larger and more luxurious than the last, but one of morgan's personal requirements was that the boat be small enough to be able to turn around at his cragston dock. corsair iii was built in 1898 by marvel of newburgh, ny and finished by fletcher's of hoboken, nj. mr. morgan was the longtime commodore of the new york yacht club and many members of that club attended the launching in newburgh, where special trains had been arranged to carry morgan's guests. among them were william k. vanderbilt, william rockefeller, joseph choate, chauncey depew, morris k. jessup, charles lanier, mr. and mrs. hamilton twombly, mr. & mrs. e. oliver iselin, colonel e.a. stevens, mr. & mrs. j. beavor webb, bishop potter, et al. the corsair iii had an overall length of 304 feet, featured ten staterooms, a library, six bathrooms, and a large dining saloon. she was christened at newburgh by miss louisa morgan. after morgan's death, his yacht did patriotic duty in both world wars..
4 bodies found inside the Bayesian, Mike Lynch family yacht, amid search
Four bodies were recovered inside the Bayesian superyacht on Wednesday, more than two days after it sank off the coast of Italy , setting off an exhaustive search for six missing people, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch .
Two of the bodies discovered earlier on Wednesday were brought to shore. One body recovered was a heavily built man, Reuters reported.
Six of the ship's 22 passengers, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, went missing after the yacht plunged under the water just before 5 a.m. on Monday as a storm swept across the area. Americans are among the missing, officials have said.
The U.K.-registered yacht belonged to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was also on board and was rescued. The tech tycoon was recently acquitted on fraud charges after a year under house arrest.
Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook, was found dead on Monday, according to the coast guard.
The rescue mission saw a diving team, helicopters and multiple coast guard ships deployed to search the water. Fifteen people were pulled from the water on Monday, and eight were hospitalized in stable condition.
A 'black swan event'? Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank
An investigation opened by local prosecutors into the cause of the disaster is ongoing. Experts have pointed to a water spout, a tornado over the water that can travel up to 120 mph, that formed during the storm, as well as the heavy weight of ship's mast, one of the largest in the world.
The 184-feet-long ship was made by Italian ship manufacturer Perini in 2008.
Lynch set off on the cruise late last month to celebrate his acquittal on fraud charges in the U.S. that marked a decade of legal challenges, the Associated Press reported .
One of his lawyers and a character witness for Lynch during the trial were also on board and vanished when the boat went down. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the four people found.

Mike Lynch and Hannah Lynch
Mike Lynch, 59, is co-founder of Britain’s largest enterprise software, Autonomy, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, and founder of venture capital fund Invoke Capital.
Sometimes known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was slapped with charges after HP said it had uncovered deceit and a major accounting scandal within the firm. He spent a year on house arrest after being extradited from the UK.
In early June, at the end of a 12-week trial, a San Francisco jury acquitted Lynch of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He was also cleared on a charge of securities fraud later that month.
Lynch and Bacares have two daughters and six dogs, all named after engineering parts, according to the U.K.’s Sunday Times in a profile of Lynch from last month.
Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was also among the missing. She was preparing to study English literature at Oxford University, according to the Sunday Times.
Hannah is the younger of Mike Lynch’s two daughters, the Times reported . Mike Lynch told the outlet that his daughters had grown up with their father being publicly accused of fraud.
Jonathan Bloomer and Judy Bloomer
Jonathan Bloomer is the non-executive chairman of both Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox, among other companies. Bloomer acted as a character witness on Lynch’s behalf during his fraud trial.
Hiscox Chief Executive Aki Hussain told Reuters in a statement that the firm was deeply shocked and saddened and their thoughts were with all those affected.
Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told BBC that he is processing the news and the family is waiting to hear updates.
“He was my elder by half an hour, so, it means a lot when you lose a twin brother,” Jeremy Bloomer told BBC. “We’ll still wait and see, so it’s fingers crossed.”
Jonathan Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a psychotherapist of nearly three decades and former teacher. She specializes in anxiety and stress. She studied English language and literature at Homerton College in Cambridge.
Christopher Morvillo and Neda Morvillo
A lawyer with Clifford Chance, Chris Morvillo was among the team that represented Mike Lynch during his trial. Morvillo is an American citizen.
He was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005, and he worked on the criminal investigation stemming from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Morvillo was a graduate of Fordham University School of Law and Villanova University.
Neda Morvillo, his wife, owns a hand-crafted jewelry company under her maiden name, Neda Nassiri. The company’s website said she has been designing and making jewelry for over 20 years.
In a post on LinkedIn after the conclusion of Lynch’s trial, Chris Morvillo acknowledged his family for their support during the case.
“And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home.
And they all lived happily ever after…."

Superyacht Nero is an incredible vessel whose sleek lines and classic exterior heralds the golden age of private yachting. Styled to resemble J.Pierpont Morgan’s famous yacht Corsair, Nero was completed in 2008 by Corsair Yachts’ at the Chinese shipyard, Yantai Raffles. With a huge promenade deck, numerous exterior seating and dining areas as well as an arsenal of luxurious amenities and incredible water toys, Nero is the premier charter yacht for those wanting to entertain or just bask in the sumptuous atmosphere of a truly elegant vessel.
Nero has a top speed of 17 knots and an economical cruising speed of twelve knots, Nero is fast, quiet and exceedingly comfortable. The dazzling interior enjoys traditional panelling of Limed Oak and Ash throughout, completing the gorgeous feel of the vintage yachting era. Nero is able to accommodate twelve guests within her lovely walls: an immense Owner’s suite, two immense suites and two twin cabins. The Owner’s suite is effectively a duplex apartment with full beam living quarters on the main deck, where there is a stateroom with his and hers bathrooms and a central shared dressing room. The Owner’s study, large and with windows on three sides, lays aft of this and holds a relaxation area with a writing desk, private dining area and a sixty five inch plasma TV. A large drop down screen in front of the fireplace can be lowered to transform this area into the yachts indoor cinema. From the observation lounge is the Owner’s oval office which has its own entry door from the port side deck for discreet arrivals and departures. Guest accommodations lie amidships on the lower deck with two spacious suites separated by two centrally located twin cabins. The aft suite has a sitting room, stateroom and his and hers bathrooms as well as a central dressing room; this suite can be divided into two separate cabins with their own bathrooms. The forward suite has a sitting room, stateroom, large VIP bathroom with spa bath, walk-in shower and separate WC. Both of the twin cabins can be configured as twin or double cabins. All of the cabins and sitting rooms feature large plasma TV’s and every bathroom contains both a tub and a shower. WiFi is available throughout the ship’s public and private areas.
Nero’s exterior features a quantity of the highest quality Burmese Teak and has been configured so that the main deck is the principle entertaining area for large gathering with the aft deck table being ideally suited for over-sized dinner parties. The spacious main salon, library and dining salon also offer the ability to entertain on a grand scale. The boat deck aft features a fifty inch pop-up TV and drop down movie screen making it a popular area for alfresco entertainment and relaxation. The Snug is a fantastic place to escape from the midday heat or to host a cozy meal. Other onboard facilities include a gym, Jacuzzi, five metre pool on the foredeck with a current machine and an incredible eighteen foot side hatch that acts as a beach platform for swimming, diving and yacht access.
Nero comes equipped with a serious battery of toys and tenders: two Seabobs, five jet skis and an assortment of water toys as well as a nine metre custom cabin cruiser, eight metre custom tender and a five metre RIB tender.
Nero is available for charter in the Mediterranean for the summer season and the Caribbean and the Bahamas during the winter season.

$5.3 billion sale of Darktrace to move forward despite tragic yacht death of founding investor Mike Lynch
The passing of Mike Lynch, the U.K. tech entrepreneur who perished last weekend when his luxury yacht abruptly sank in the Mediterranean, is unlikely to impact the sale of cybersecurity firm Darktrace, of which he and his wife own a significant share.
Thoma Bravo, a software-focused private equity firm, had agreed to buy Darktrace in April for $5.3 billion, and Darktrace shareholders voted to approve the sale in June. The deal still needs regulatory approval, but Thoma Bravo is expected to complete the acquisition by the end of 2024, a person familiar with the transaction said.
“If the shares have already been voted, there is no obvious mechanism or need for further approval or action to be taken by any shareholders, including the Lynch family or estate,” an attorney who advises on M&A transactions told Fortune .
The sale has been back in the spotlight in the wake of the yacht tragedy , which also took the life of Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter as well as of a prominent banker and lawyer. The deaths came the same week that Lynch’s co-defendant in a related fraud case was fatally run over by a car. The fraud case involved Autonomy, a software firm that Lynch founded and sold to U.S. tech giant HP , which accused him of using accounting improprieties to inflate the company’s value.
Lynch’s connection to Darktrace is through his venture capital firm Invoke Capital. In 2013, a team of Cambridge mathematicians, including current CEO Poppy Gustafsson, along with business people and intelligence experts, founded the startup that relies on A.I. to combat cyberthreats. The U.K.-based Darktrace raised $230.5 million in funding, according to Crunchbase . Invoke was an early investor of Darktrace.
Darktrace went public in 2021, during the height of the IPO boom. But rather than listing in the U.S., Darktrace opened for trading on the London Stock Exchange. Invoke Capital was said to be Darktrace’s largest investor at the time, owning 39.5% of the company, the Guardian reported . Within months of the IPO, Darktrace’s valuation soared to nearly 7 billion pounds ($9.2 billion).
In 2022, Thoma Bravo made its first attempt to buy Darktrace, but walked away from negotiations when the two sides couldn’t agree on terms. The PE firm returned this year, clinching a deal for Darktrace in April. By this time, Lynch’s stake in Darktrace had fallen. The entrepreneur and his wife, Angela Bacares, owned roughly 7% of Darktrace, the person said. The couple’s stake then dropped further, to a little more than 3% by mid-August, according to a different person familiar with Darktrace.
Lynch and his wife were aboard a yacht named Bayesian after the Bayesian inference, a statistical model that formed the foundations of his company Autonomy. The boat sank off the coast of Sicily earlier this week and Lynch was pronounced dead Thursday, Aug. 22, while his wife survived. Lynch hasn’t been affiliated with Darktrace for some time. When he passed, he was not an executive of Darktrace but a shareholder.
Lynch’s influence on the U.K. tech scene was enormous and he was hailed as the “ British Bill Gates ,” although he was better known for his legal problems. A Cambridge-educated mathematician, he developed software that could extract useful information from unstructured sources including phone calls, emails, and video.
This software was at the core of Autonomy, which HP purchased for $11 billion in 2011. But the next year, HP was forced to write down $8.8 billion of Autonomy’s value, making it one of the worst deals in history.
HP, along with U.S. prosecutors, alleged that Lynch and Autonomy’s former finance chief used accounting tricks to inflate the company’s revenue ahead of the 2011 sale, Fortune reported . In August, a federal court in San Francisco acquitted Lynch of criminal fraud charges.
Lynch’s late co-defendant in the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, served as Autonomy’s former vice president of finance. Both men were acquitted in a U.S. criminal trial, but civil lawsuits remain ongoing. Chamberlain also worked for Darktrace; he joined in 2016 as CFO and was named COO in September 2020. He went on administrative leave in June 2023, his LinkedIn said .
