Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily
Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.
The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .
The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.
The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.
“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.
Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.
Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.
“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”
Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.
On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.
“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .
The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.
“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.
What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.
“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”
The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.
Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.
“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”
The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.
Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .
Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.
Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.
In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.
“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

Breaking news, ‘job’ on broadway: get tickets now to see ‘succession’ stars.
The 19-time Emmy-winning “Succession” ended on May 28, 2023.
However, if you’re still hoping to get a fix, some of your favorite Waystar Royco stars are on Broadway.
From now until Oct. 27, Peter Friedman (Frank Vernon) and Sydney Lemmon (Jennifer, an actress in Willa’s play) are sharing the stage in the buzzy, seriocomic two-hander “Job” at the Helen Hayes Theatre .
Writer Max Wolf Friedlich’s play tells the story of Jane (Lemmon), an overworked employee who goes viral after an on-the-clock meltdown at her California tech job. As a result, she has to meet with laid-back company therapist Loyd (Friedman).
To say any more would spoil the fun of the twisty drama that unfolds over the 80-minute runtime.
“’Job’ will grab you as soon as the lights come on and never lets go with its darkly comedic yet anxiety-inducing insight,“ screenwriter Charlton Villavelez raved.
“Friedlich’s smart and often very funny script actually shares a lot in common with those of Emerald Fennell, the writer-director of the films ‘Promising Young Woman’ and ‘Saltburn,’” the New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinski said.
If this sounds like the mind-bending corporate satire for you, tickets are available for all upcoming performances.
At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on tickets was $83 before fees on Vivid Seats.
Other shows have seats anywhere from $84 to $337 before fees on Vivid Seats.
For more information, our team has everything you need to know and more about “Job” on Broadway below.
All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.
“Job” Broadway tickets
Based on our findings, “Job” has an unconventional Broadway schedule .
The show sometimes goes dark on Sundays; other weeks on Mondays. Matinees take place on odd days of the week, too. Most Saturdays have 2 p.m. early shows; otherwise, the schedule is a bit unpredictable with the occasional 2 p.m. Tuesday and 5 p.m. Thursday performances.
To find the show that makes the most sense for your busy schedule, we recommend you check out the complete “Job” calendar here .
“Job” cast
As mentioned above, there are only two cast members in “Job.”
Here’s a bit more about them outside of their “Succession” bona fides.
Peter Friedman has been acting since the ’70s. Some of his most notable roles include Todd Haynes’ “Safe,” Tamara Jenkins’ “The Savages” and Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche New York.” If you dig far back into the archives you’ll find he also appeared in “Sesame Street” in 1976.
Sydney Lemmon is Jack Lemmon’s granddaughter. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s focus on where you might have seen her these past few years: “Tár,” :Firestarter” and “Velvet Buzzsaw” are her most well-known films she acted in; on the TV side, she appeared in “Fear The Walking Dead” and “Evil.”
Huge stars on Broadway in 2024
Friedman and Lemmon aren’t the only recognizable names on the Great White Way these next few months.
Here are other stars from TV and film lining midtown marquees right now.
• “Hold On To Me Darling” starring Adam Driver
• “The Roommate” starring Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone
• “McNeal” starring Robert Downey Jr.
• “Yellow Face” starring Daniel Dae Kim
• “Left On Tenth” starring Julianna Margulies
Also, of note, Juliana Canfield (Jess Jordan from “Succession”) is in the Tony Award-winning “Stereophonic.”
Kieran Culkin will allegedly appear in “Glengarry Glenross” with Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr sometime in the near future as well.

Why kamala harris’s centrism is working.
The vice president’s convention speech embodied her efforts to win over swing voters.
By David Leonhardt
Kamala Harris capped her first month as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate with a roughly 35-minute convention speech last night that embodied her aggressive efforts to win over swing voters.
It was a patriotic speech that was hawkish on foreign policy and border security. She described the United States as the greatest country in the world — a view many Americans hold but most Democratic voters do not — and she ended by saying that being an American was “the greatest privilege on earth.” She promised to confront China, Russia, Iran and Iran-backed terrorists and to make sure that the U.S. military remained the “most lethal fighting force in the world.”
She also offered a series of populist promises to help the middle class by reducing the cost of housing and health care — policies that many independents and some Republicans favor. And she spent little if any time on subjects that inspire passion among Democrats but are either secondary or off-putting to many swing voters, such as student debt forgiveness and President Biden’s climate agenda.
You can read more about Harris’s speech in this news story , as well as in this article on how she contrasted herself with Donald Trump .
In today’s newsletter, I want to explain why Harris’s move to the political center seems to be working, at least so far.
Who vs. what
Harris has surged in the polls , erasing Biden’s deficit and taking a small lead over Trump, for two main reasons. First, she has won over some swing voters, including independents, working-class Midwesterners and even a fraction of 2020 Trump voters. Second, she has done so at no apparent cost: In addition to attracting swing voters, she has built a bigger lead than Biden had among the Democratic base, such as young voters, college graduates and city residents.
How could this be? It comes down to the difference between the who and the what of her candidacy.
Loyal Democrats are energized about the who . They spent months agonizing over Biden’s flailing candidacy. Once he quit and Harris wrapped up party support in just a few hours, everything felt different.
Democrats remembered what it was like to have a candidate who could deliver a speech without making people fret that something was about to go wrong. Harris is full of energy and joy. She can cogently explain the administration’s policies, and she seems to be having fun in the process. Amid this electricity, many Democrats have been willing to tolerate her triangulation in the service of winning.
Harris isn’t just another Democratic politician, either. She would be the country’s first female president, of course, and is a woman of color. Today’s Democratic Party puts great emphasis on identity, especially race and gender. The party defines itself in large part as the defender of groups that suffer discrimination and injustice. Just watch Tuesday night’s ceremonial roll call to nominate Harris, when delegates celebrated her historic status — and their own identities.
This focus on personal identity can give pathbreaking candidates more flexibility to stray from Democratic orthodoxy without angering the base. Barack Obama benefited from a similar dynamic in 2008. He was more moderate than some other Democratic candidates that year, yet he still excited many progressives. (Obama’s speech this week was also fairly moderate. Nonetheless, it received rapturous applause.)
For all these reasons, Harris has formed an emotional bond with liberals and others who make up the Democratic base. That bond has freed her to pursue swing voters with the what of her candidacy. She offers an economic agenda that many working-class voters support. She claims that she, not Trump, is the true candidate of border security. She encourages “U.S.A.!” chants. Last night, she referred to American history as “the most extraordinary story ever told.”
A tight race
Even so, the presidential race remains close. Harris leads in enough states to win, but only just. And if recent polls have undercounted Trump voters as much as they did in 2016 and 2020 , he would probably win an election held today.
With the convention now over, Democrats won’t be able to control the narrative the way that they have this week. Republicans have already started running ads to remind voters of Harris’s liberal past. One ad opens by calling Harris a “San Francisco radical” and showing her wearing a Covid mask while she announces her pronouns. It then includes clips in which she calls for a ban on plastic straws, supports looser immigration policies and says more police officers don’t lead to more safety. Expect to see a lot of these ads before November.
It is possible that Harris has been enjoying a temporary polling bump — from the good vibes of replacing Biden — that will soon fade. (In that case, I’ll be curious to see if Harris goes even further to moderate her image; she said nothing last night, for example, about whether she supported an “all of the above” energy policy to reduce prices.)
Nobody knows what will happen between now and Election Day. What’s clear is that Harris has run an effective first month of her campaign, managing both to consolidate Democratic support and to moderately — in both senses of the word — expand her appeal.
More from the convention
Harris’s speech included a statement of support for Israel, a denunciation of Hamas and a demand for security and dignity for the people of Gaza. It was effort to bridge the Democratic Party’s divides on the war.
Harris spoke about growing up in a working-class neighborhood with an immigrant single mother . “She taught us to never complain about injustice, but do something about it,” Harris said. “She also taught us, ‘And never do anything half-assed.’”
Harris accused Trump and the Republicans of planning to jail opponents, cut taxes for the rich and ban abortion nationwide. “Simply put, they are out of their minds,” she said.
“My entire career, I’ve only had one client: the people,” Harris said of her background as a prosecutor and lawmaker. Trump, she argued, was running “to serve the only client he has ever had: himself.” Read a transcript of her speech .
Other speakers last night echoed Harris’s patriotic theme . Adam Kinzinger, a Republican former congressman, said, “I want to let my fellow Republicans in on the secret: The Democrats are as patriotic as us.”
Members of the Central Park Five — who as boys were wrongfully convicted of attacking a woman in 1980s New York — criticized Trump . Years ago, he called for the return of the death penalty over the case.
Celebrity appearances included the Chicks, who performed the national anthem, Kerry Washington , the singer Pink and the N.B.A. star Stephen Curry, who endorsed Harris in a video.
Harris’s grandnieces led delegates in a call-and-response about how to pronounce her name. “First you say ‘comma,’ like a comma in a sentence,” one said. “Then you say ‘la,’ like ‘la-la-la-la-la,’” the other said.
More on the campaign
Trump, calling in to Fox News after Harris’s speech, sought to distance himself from Project 2025, his conservative allies’ governing blueprint, and accused Harris of failing to fix the problems she was “complaining about.”
Trump said on social media that Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, who is Jewish, had done “nothing” for Israel and called himself “the best friend that Israel, and the Jewish people, ever had.” Shapiro accused Trump of peddling antisemitic tropes .
Arizona can require people registering to vote to show proof of citizenship , the Supreme Court said.
Trump’s New Jersey golf club will host a fund-raiser to support Capitol rioters , billed as the J6 Awards Gala, next month.
Arkansas’s Supreme Court rejected an effort to put an abortion-rights amendment on the November ballot, saying the paperwork was faulty.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. filed to withdraw from the presidential election in Arizona. He’s scheduled to speak about his campaign’s future today.

Compete, grow, sing, explore on Nova Scotia’s South Shore
From: Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
News release
Government of Canada investment supports tourism and local businesses
August 21, 2024 · Lunenburg, Nova Scotia · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)
Atlantic Canada’s small towns and rural areas are vibrant places bustling with economic, social and cultural activity. The Government of Canada is investing to help communities in the Lunenburg area thrive, building long-term prosperity.
Improving visitor experiences, and business opportunities Today, the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA, announced total contributions of nearly $2.2 million for three community organizations, a municipality and a local food producer in Nova Scotia’s South Shore.
The funding will help the Lunenburg Yacht Club (LYC), the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society, the Town of Mahone Bay, South Shore Opportunities Incorporated and Terra Beata Farms to host sporting and cultural events, upgrade tourism infrastructure, purchase new automated equipment and deliver programming to support entrepreneurs and growing businesses, thus increasing visitation to the Lunenburg area and setting the stage for growth.
For more information on the companies and projects, please see the related backgrounder.
Today’s announcement further demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to ensuring Atlantic Canadian residents and businesses have what they need to accelerate the region’s economic momentum and build sustainable communities.
“Nova Scotia’s small towns and communities are its magic. Through ACOA, your federal government is investing in the people, places and businesses that make them more attractive to all people. This investment will bring in more visitors, boost small businesses and strengthen communities to make this area an even better place to call home.” - The Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA
“The Lunenburg Yacht Club’s collaboration with ACOA will ensure barrier-free access to sailing for all abilities and provide the opportunity for more residents of Lunenburg County to experience the treasure that is Mahone Bay for generations to come.” - Erinn McCarty, Commodore, Lunenburg Yacht Club and Chair Mobility Cup, 2024
"This ACOA support will be hugely valuable for the research, design and construction planning needed to restore the 116 year-old Opera House as a vibrant performing arts centre in the heart of Lunenburg's UNESCO district.” - Tom McFall, Vice-President of Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society and Chair of Lunenburg Opera House Team
“Mahone Bay’s waterfront has graced the cover of numerous tourism publications over the decades. This project, with crucial support from Federal and Provincial governments, continues the Town’s commitment to maintain and improve our waterfront infrastructure, to the benefit of future generations of residents and visitors.” - David Devenne, Mayor, Town of Mahone Bay
“The volunteer driven Board of Directors of the non-profit organization, South Shore Opportunities CBDC, is pleased to work with ACOA to provide free business counselling and technical assistance in Queens and Lunenburg counties. The ACOA funding allows the CBDC to provide hands on business help at no charge so every small business can be prepared for a start-up, expansion or recovery. Preparation is a key to business success.” - Krista Harding, Executive Director, South Shore Opportunities Incorporated
“The support from ACOA enables Terra Beata Farms Ltd. to acquire automated processing equipment to increase our capacity to efficiently take cranberries, rhubarb, and haskaps from the farm gate and prepare it to meet the exacting standards of domestic and international markets. Farms get access to more of the world markets and employees get better year round jobs, all of which adds to the Atlantic Canadian economy.” - David Ernst, President, Terra Beata Farms Ltd
Quick facts
In the tenth year of its Sail Able program, Lunenburg Yacht Club will host this year's Mobility Cup for the first time. Previously hosted in Nova Scotia by Halifax and North Sydney Clubs, The Mobility Cup is an annual sailing regatta for differently abled sailors, attracting athletes this year from across Canada and the U.S. as far away as California and Hawaii. All participants compete in the Martin 16, a specially modified keel boat designed in Canada for sailors living with disabilities.
The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society , incorporated in 1986, produces the annual Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival and stages 20 to 25 concerts a year, as well as a film series and other events. Five years ago, it purchased by the Lunenburg Opera House , which was built in 1908 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). Over the years it was used for vaudeville, as a cinema, and a recording studio, but has fallen into disrepair and is in need of upgrades and modernization.
Mahone Bay is a small coastal community about a one-hour drive from Halifax. It offers a rich mix of heritage, culture and natural beauty and is famed for three churches casting their reflection on the water. The Town comprises 3.12 square kilometers and has a population of 1,016 residents (2021 Census).
South Shore Opportunities Incorporated is one of 41 Community Business Development Corporations (CBDCs) delivering the national Community Futures (CF) program in rural Atlantic Canada. Each CBDC plays an important role in strengthening the ability of rural communities to diversify their economic base to foster long-term prosperity and sustainability.
Founded in 1998 by David and Evelyn Ernst, Terra Beata has a 12-acre cranberry farm on Heckmans Island which produces juice, dried fruit and cooked products sold at grocery stores across Canada. It also has a 50-acre farm in Aylesford, and a 12 acre farm in Tremont, NS.
In 2018, Terra Beata opened a facility in Sackville, NB to receive, clean and freeze fresh cranberries from its farms plus about 15 other farms in Atlantic Canada, for a total of over 5 million pounds of fruit per year. Frozen berries packed in Sackville travel to industrial customers around the world.
The funding announced today is provided through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund , Community Futures program and Regional Economic Growth through Innovation program.
