MaxZ86, WAY OF LIFE

MaxZ86, WAY OF LIFE 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

WAY OF LIFE, formerly MORNING GLORY is quite simply an iconic MaxZ86, with an enviable racing history across the globe.

This record-breaking canting keel, built by McConaghy Boats, has had a strong presence in the USA and Mediterranean Maxi racing scene since new.

She was built originally as MORNING GLORY, alongside PYEWACKET – as a sistership, and encompassing the new (at the time) technology and design thinking of the CBTF (Canting Ballast Twin Foil).

Her immediate successes in the top offshore events at the time made the world turn their heads to canting keel technology. The hull form is surprisingly narrow compared with today’s wide reaching machines that reduce drag as righting moment comes mainly from the canting keel.

The clever rotating canard, or forward rudder is operated at the helm, and either independently, or fixed at a ratio with the main rudder, a very clever system.

Although arguably not quite as powerful reaching, she still holds her own in VMG, and flat water and capable of competing alongside the world’s most competitive yachts.

Recently under the guise of VESPER PI, she claimed line honours against some of the Mediterranean’s fastest Maxis and proved to be competitive in the 2019 Rolex Capri Sailing Week, and since then a top performer in the famous Barcelona race.

Now under new ownership and given a new lease of life with substantial investment in recent years. With replacement PBO standing rigging in 2019 – saving more weight aloft, and she has a substantial sail wardrobe.

This yacht is still taking line honours victories and offers a superb and fast platform for offshore and inshore racing.

Available immediately for charter or for purchase.

An event not showing that you’re interested in? Check back for updates or get in touch!

How much should I tip the boat captain/crew?

The crew will work hard to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time on board. If you have enjoyed your charter we would suggest a 10% is customary.

How do I confirm a yacht charter?

To confirm a charter we will send you a charter agreement for signature and invoice for a deposit. The owner will counter-sign the charter agreement and then your charter will be confirmed

What else will I need to pay for?

In addition to the charter fee you will pay an Advanced Charter Allowance (ACA) from which the cost for all food and drink for the duration of the charter, fuel, marina and any other additional expenses will be deducted.

What happens once I have booked?

Once you have booked a cruising charter we will be in touch to gather your charter preferences including dietary preferences, meal times and itinerary. We will liaise with the chef to arrange a proposed menu for the charter and put you in touch with the crew via Whatsapp chat.

What are high and low season dates for Caribbean cruising charters

High Season includes the Christmas and New Year period (approx 28th December – 7th January) and 2 weeks around Easter

Can I charter a yacht for a corporate event?

Yes, we offer corporate yacht charters that are perfect for team-building exercises and other corporate functions.

What insurance will I need?

The yacht is fully insured but you will need your own personal insurance that covers yacht racing

Do I need an owners rep/boat captain and what role will they have?

Most of our yachts have to come with a boat captain / owner’s representative; this person isn’t there to be the skipper and they can fit into your team wherever you need. There knowledge of the boat can help you get the best performance from the boat and minimise avoidable damage.

Eating out as a crew?

If you decide to venture out as a group and wish to include the permanent crew, please remember that what is your holiday is their job. If you would like to show your appreciation for all their hard work in making your holiday a success by asking them to join you for a night out, then please be kind enough to pay for their expenses.

What is racing yacht charter?

Racing yacht charter is a unique opportunity that allows you to charter a race prepared yacht with your team and participate in regattas around the world. We can cater for race charter opportunites from a group of friends wanting a fun regatta in the sun to a professional team looking for silverwear.

Do I need sailing experience to participate in a racing yacht charter?

Sailing experience requirements varies according to yacht and regatta of choice. Some yachts like a Volvo 65 require more sailing experience than joining the team on a 40′ racer cruiser. When arranging your charter with you we discuss any pre-requisite experience with you.

What is the duration of a racing yacht charter?

For most racing charters your schedule will include 2 training days prior to the event start date, for offshore races a third day for boat preparation will also be included.

What additional costs should I expect?

In addition to the charter fee you may pay a security deposit and an Advanced Charter Allowance (ACA) to cover charter related costs including race entry, berthing and other charter related costs.

Can you arrange accommodation?

Yes, we offer a regatta concierge service which means that in addition to arranging your race entry and berthing we can also recommend and book accommodation ashore, flights, transfers and restaurant bookings as well as much more.* * 10% service charge applies for regatta concierge services

Once you have booked a charter we will be in touch to gather crew information in order to handle the race entry on your behalf. As the regatta date approaches we will connect you with the Boat Captain via Whatsapp chat and provide useful information on both the event and on the location. We are available at any time via phone or email to answer any other questions or queries you may have.

What is the security deposit for?

The security deposit is to cover damage to the yacht, that is more than just general wear and tear that would be expected when racing. In the worst case scenario it will cover the excess should there be the need for a claim on the yacht’s insurance. However, it is also there to cover less serious damage that does not warrant an insurance claim like damages to sails. If there is no damage then we will refund the security deposit in the week following the charter. If there are any damages the value of these damages will be assessed and the balance of the security deposit refunded after these costs have been deducted.

Unveiling the legendary 2003 mc conaghy super maxi 86 'way of life'.

Set sail on an extraordinary journey with the 2003 MC CONAGHY 86' 6" "SUPER MAXI 86 / WAY OF LIFE" Racing Sailboat, currently available for sale in Koper, Slovenia.

WAY OF LIFE , formerly known as MORNING GLORY, is a Super Maxi 86 with a remarkable global racing legacy. Constructed by Mc Conaghy Boats in 2003, this groundbreaking canting keel Super Maxi has made its mark in the USA and Mediterranean Maxi racing circuits.

Originally named MORNING GLORY and designed alongside PYEWACKET, this vessel embraced cutting-edge technology and the principles of the CBTF (Canting Ballast Twin Foil) at the time. Her immediate victories in prestigious offshore events drew global attention to canting keel technology. Notably, her hull design, while narrower compared to modern racing yachts, relies heavily on the canting keel for stability.

A standout feature of this yacht is its clever rotating canard or forward rudder, operated at the helm either independently or in conjunction with the main rudder, showcasing a highly innovative system. While she may not dominate on reaches, she excels in Velocity Made Good (VMG), flat water, and remains competitive alongside the world’s top racing yachts.

Rebranded as VESPER PI, this yacht claimed line honors against some of the Mediterranean's fastest Maxis and demonstrated its competitiveness in the 2019 Rolex Capri Sailing Week. Subsequently, it emerged as a top performer in the renowned Barcelona race.

Under new ownership, WAY OF LIFE has received substantial investment in recent years, including the replacement of PBO standing rigging in 2019, reducing weight aloft, and an expanded sail wardrobe. This yacht continues to secure line honors victories and provides an exceptional and swift platform for both offshore and inshore racing.

It is currently available for immediate charter or purchase, with a 2019 survey readily accessible for review.

For detailed specifications and refit information, please contact us via email. Embark on your next sailing adventure with a true legend.

The EWOL project, whose ambassador is the impressive Way of Life yacht, started more than 15 years ago from a visionary idea of the famous Slovenian nautical architect, Mr. Andrej Justin. Bayesian yacht rescuer recalls how 'extreme' storm caused vessel to sink 'in 60 seconds'

Karsten Borner, commander of the nearby Sir Robert BP, says he immediately knew something was wrong when the Bayesian yacht disappeared from the radar within seconds

A nearby captain says 'extreme' weather hit the doomed Bayesian yacht on Monday night

  • 06:03, 22 Aug 2024

The captain of a nearby boat who helped 15 people escape the doomed Bayesian superyacht has recalled how the "extremely strong" storm caused the vessel to disappear in "60 seconds".

A fifth body was today found in the wreckage of the Bayesian , after a further two were confirmed to be that of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. On Monday, another body belonging to the Bayesian’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was also recovered.

Captain Karsten Borner said his crew aboard the nearby Sir Robert BP yacht spotted a distress flare set off from a life raft as they sat around 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian . Mr Borner's boat was at the time using its engine to stay in position, before a passenger on his yacht spotted the flare.

Acting quickly, his crew dispatched their tender which found the life raft and brought the occupants back to his yacht . He told Sky News: "We couldn't see them any more and they disappeared from the radar, we were busy keeping our own ship sailing. We couldn't see the ship again so we were aware something was very wrong."

He said it was only when the tender set out that they found the life raft. Mr Borner added: "It turned out to be the life raft, a 12-person life raft with 15 people inside including one baby. They stepped over to our tender and we brought them back to our ship. There we took good care of them, gave them dry clothes, towels, blankets, tea and coffee and so on and took care of them."

The captain said he then helped the coastguard launch its search and rescue mission for the remaining occupants of the Bayesian who were still missing. He added that the captain of the Bayesian told him the yacht had sunk in two minutes, but he had since seen a video which showed it go down in 60 seconds .

He said: "The engineer and captain had no explanation why she sank so quickly. My personal opinion is it shouldn't tip like this, it goes against any logic." He also questioned the safety of the Bayesian's 75-metre mast and added: "I think it's not safe to build the masts."

Describing the strength of the storm and sea spouts that hit his yacht and the Bayesian, he said: "They were very close and we were hit very hard, very strong and they had the same. It was extreme, it was extremely strong." The head of Sicily’s civil protection agency Salvatore Cocina earlier confirmed that four bodies had been recovered and efforts to bring a fifth to shore are “ongoing” – but later said searches for the day were over and would resume on Thursday.

Two of the bodies found were confirmed to be that of Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah . Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, survived along with the 14 others who were rescued Mr Borner's yacht.

What is known about the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily and those aboard

PORTICELLO, Sicily -- Specialist cave divers working in 12-minute underwater shifts were searching Tuesday for six missing passengers and crew, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, believed to be in the submerged wreck of a luxury yacht that was slammed by a powerful storm and swiftly sank off Sicily.

The sleek yacht, named the Bayesian, was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers when it suddenly sank near the Mediterranean island that is part of Italy at about 4 a.m. on Monday. One body has been recovered and 15 people survived.

Fire rescue officials have said the six believed to remain in the sailboat's hull will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage.

Here's what we know so far about the sinking and those who were on board.

Italian civil protection officials believe a sudden and fierce storm that battered the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday whipped up a waterspout in the exact spot where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was moored.

Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht moored nearby, said he saw the Bayesian during the storm but when the wild weather passed it was gone and he saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, the Italian news agency ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported.

Borner and one of his crew boarded their tender and found a lifeboat carrying 15 people, some of them injured. They took them aboard their yacht and alerted the coast guard.

Rescue authorities said the wreck was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) about a half mile offshore of the picturesque fishing village of Porticello.

Among the missing is 59-year-old tech tycoon Mike Lynch , sometimes described as the British Bill Gates. Lynch was acquitted in June of all charges in a U.S. fraud trial linked to the $11 billion sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his name running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was reportedly among the missing. His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived.

Among others still missing Tuesday, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. Morvillo was regarded as an elite defense lawyer and was also a federal prosecutor in New York after 9/11.

Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy. He is the former head of the Autonomy audit committee and testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial.

Bloomer was also chair of the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London market.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement.

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man survived. The ministry, citing privacy, did not release his identity.

One body was recovered on Monday, identified as the on-board chef.

The Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav. It was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) aluminum mast — one of the world’s tallest. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

Its registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., based on the Isle of Man, according to online maritime database Equasis. Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Autonomy.

Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water and can happen when a storm moves across warm water.

According to the U.S. National Ocean Service, there are two types of waterspouts — fair-weather and tornadic.

Tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning,” the service says on its website.

While scientists haven’t attributed the specific event to climate change, average monthly surface temperatures have been at record highs for months . Hotter air can hold more moisture, making heavier storms more likely.

Sicily has been baking under intense heat this summer , and the United Nations’ panel of climate change experts notes the Mediterranean Sea is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with warming rates roughly 20% higher than the global average.

Experts say it is extraordinarily rare for a luxury sailboat of this size to capsize due to weather events.

“This just doesn’t happen. You know, boats sink because things like keels fall off, or they run aground and breach the hull ... whereas just from a weather angle, a boat that big being pushed over on its side is absolutely extraordinary,” said Skip Novak, a lifelong sailor who has taken part in multiple round the world yacht races and written books about sailing.

Novak said he believed that strong gusts likely pushed the yacht over 90 degrees to its side, and the vessel did not recover because of the weight of the huge mast and because it was anchored. He suggested that internal doors were likely not closed, and water quickly poured in to sink the vessel.

“When you’re at anchor, even if it’s blowing with a storm in the Mediterranean, you rarely shut the whole boat down because nobody expects something like this to happen," Novak told The Associated Press. “So if the boat wasn’t completely watertight at the deck, you’d have flooding going in. It would take a couple minutes and that would be it."

As the search for the missing continues, authorities already have begun trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Prosecutors from the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation, as is normal in such events even when no suspects are identified. To date, they have not commented publicly.

The British Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo.

Corder reported from The Hague, Netherlands. Associated Press writer Sylvia Hui in London contributed to this report.

Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

Breaking news to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared with tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

Divers are running out of time to find a missing British tech tycoon and five others alive after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily during a storm on Monday.

Billionaire Mike Lynch , 59, his daughter, Hannah, 18, and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, are among the six people still missing. One body was found early on during the search – believed to be chef Recaldo Thomas – and 15 people were rescued.

They had been celebrating Mr Lynch’s acquittal in a fraud trial in June over the sale of his tech firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $US11 billion ($16 billion) back in 2011.

Moment Mike Lynch's luxury yacht sinks caught on CCTV

Hopes are dwindling to find the missing six people alive, but experts say it is possible they could be trapped in air pockets that are yet to be reached by the divers.

If that is the case, an engineer who led the salvage operation when Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized in 2012, said there was a maximum of three days to get them out.

Specialist divers search for six people after a superyacht capsized off the Italian island of Sicily. They have just 10 minutes to search the wreck at a time. Picture: Vigili del Fuoco / AFP

“They’ve got a very small window of time to try to find people stuck inside with hopefully an air pocket, and they could be rescued,” Mr Sloane told Sky News.

“You’ve got a maximum of two to three days to try to get someone out, so the next 24 hours are critical.

“If the yacht is on its side, it might have more air pockets than if it’s upright. She’s got quite a large keel, and that will deflect and put her on her side, I’m sure.”

The 56-metre yacht, named Bayesian , capsized at about 4am local time on Monday (12pm AEST). Two days will have past at about noon on Wednesday Australian time, and three days will be at up the same time on Thursday.

Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, agreed on Tuesday the next 24 hours were crucial to find survivors trapped inside.

He said it was “impossible to predict accurately” but there was hope for air pockets inside the vessel because it sank quickly within just a few minutes and it remains in tact and on its side.

“There are records of survivors found in such air pockets: Harrison Okene’s rescue after three days trapped in an air pocket is well-documented thanks to the diver’s video of the rescue,” he said in comments released by the UK’s Science Media Centre.

“Yacht races such as the Vendée Globe have seen competitor Jean Le Cam trapped inside his overturned yacht for 16 hours before another competitor could come to the rescue.”

Dr Souppez said just like in the Titan submersible disaster last year, rescuers may be “looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals” to find survivors.

The OceanGate submersible went missing in June last year while attempting to view the Titanic wreck, prompting a huge multinational search that gained intense worldwide interest.

It was missing for days before debris was found and it was determined the sub had imploded, killing all five people on board – including British billionaire explorer Hamish Harding, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, Titanic expert Paul Henri ‘PH’ Nargeolet , British Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman Dawood.

Why is the search is so difficult?

Specialist cave divers and their equipment were flown to Sicily from the mainland to access the confined spaces of the sunken vessel.

They are restricted to 12 minutes for each dive because of the water pressure, according to fire service spokesman Luca Cari.

It takes one minute to get down and another minute to get back, meaning they have just 10 minutes at a time to search the yacht, which is lying largely intact on the seabed some 50 metres down.

While Italy’s coastguard said the search continued without a break, Captain Vincenzo Zagarola said it was “difficult to imagine” it would end well.

The divers are trying to access the cabins where it is feared some people became trapped.

It is understood furniture has blocked their way making this even more difficult.

“The spaces inside the boat are very tight and if you encounter an obstacle it is very complicated to move forward, just as it is very difficult to find alternative routes,” said Mr Cari said.

Reportedly owned by Mr Lynch’s family, Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilding firm Perini Navi in 2008.

Its 75-metre mast was the world’s tallest aluminium sailing mast, according to the Charter World website.

A photograph posted on social media by the Baia Santa Nicolicchia bar in Porticello showed the yacht lit up, its towering mast shining in the darkness, just a few hours before the storm hit.

Matthew Schanck, from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told news agency AFP it was an “extraordinary event”.

“This is a large, luxurious superyacht that has founded quite quickly in a touristy, well-known sailing area off Sicily. It’s pretty unprecedented,” he said.

What caused the yacht to sink?

Bayesian is said to have disappeared into the sea within minutes of being hit by a tornado-like storm off the Sicilian town of Porticello.

The British-flagged vessel was anchored some 700 metres from port when the waterspout struck, according to witnesses.

Karsten Borner, skipper of a yacht anchored nearby, described a “very strong hurricane gust” that hit. He was battling to keep his vessel steady when suddenly “we noticed that the ship behind us was gone”.

“First came the wind, then the water – it was definitely a tornado,” said local fisherman Giovanni Lococco, describing the waterspout.

Restaurant battered by Sicily storm that sank luxury superyacht

The ship’s captain James Calfield, 51, spoke from hospital and said had no idea the tornado was coming towards the ship.

“We didn’t see it coming,” he told Italian newspaper La Repubblica

The president of the Italian Meteorological Society, Luca Mercalli, said the yacht’s crew should have woken the guests and given them life jackets given the weather warnings overnight, The Telegraph reported.

An expert at the scene, who was not named, told news agency Reuters officials were investigating whether the yacht’s crew had closed the hatches before the storm struck, and would look at whether other appropriate measures had been taken.

Sam Jefferson, editor of magazine Sailing Today , also said that open hatches could have caused the yacht to sink.

“I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that,” he said.

“The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge.”

What is a waterspout?

“A waterspout is a narrow column of rotating air below a thunderstorm that occurs over water” and is “part of the same weather ‘family’ as tornadoes”, explained Dr Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in Britain, in comments released by the UK’s Science Media Centre.

Like tornadoes, they suck up air in a rotating motion, usually causing less damage than tornadoes over land, however.

While many waterspouts are “fairly inconsequential”, lasting just a few seconds, some can pack winds of more than 100 kilometres per hour, said Dr Inness.

42 Tweets From Night Two Of The DNC That Are Way Funnier Than They Should Be

Night two of the DNC wrapped up with a millennial-coded state-by-state roll call, Barack Obama's "size" joke, and Michelle Obama's scorched earth speech.

There were also jokes, duh. And here are my favorites:

At Tahiti's Olympic surfing venue, Polynesians fight for a reef and a way of life

way of life yacht

TEAHUPO'O, Tahiti - On the remote south coast of Tahiti, its Jurassic peaks and azure lagoon accessible only by boat, Patrick Rochette is explaining how centuries-old Polynesian conservation traditions are being revived to protect this unique environment.

Mingled with gruesome tales of the island's history of tribal wars and the roots of wave-riding, it's a compelling account that resonates with the school children that the Tahitian elder has brought to this idyllic spot close to the Olympic surfing venue of Teahupo'o.

Among the interconnected Polynesian concepts lost or repressed during Tahiti's French colonisation that Rochette describes: respect for tupuna, the ancestors; mana, the spiritual power of people and places; tapu, that which is sacred; rahui, a restriction or prohibition; and the guardians - the whales, sharks, turtles.

"It's up to the children to go home with this information and explain it to their parents," says Rochette, a burly 63-year-old.

For Rochette and others, countering the pressures of over-exploitation and climate change go hand-in-hand with a cultural renaissance in the Pacific island group, a distinct Polynesian identity that spans the world's largest ocean.

"We Polynesians, in 15 or 20 years, if we don't do anything, there'll be nothing left," Rochette said in a boat, speeding down the jungle-clad coast. "We have to do it together, not just here, but the Pacific community has to do all of this together."

The Polynesian Triangle encompasses some 10 million square miles of the Pacific Ocean with Hawaii, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and Easter Island (Rapa Nui) at its corners. Its people, who trace their lineage back to a spiritual homeland, are closely connected by language, culture and their seafaring history.

As ideas of sustainability and conservation build momentum around the world, the adoption of traditional and culturally relevant approaches is becoming more popular among Indigenous communities.

In Polynesia, an intimate knowledge of the moana, the ocean, and the concept of guardianship is resonating as pressures on reefs and lagoons from both development and climate change grow.

WAVE OF MANA

Tereva David is also working with the local Teahupo'o community to embrace the Polynesian way of living in harmony with the environment.

One of the best to ride the Paris Olympic's ferocious wave in front of his village, David has run camps for promising young French Polynesian surfers for the past decade.

David, 35, teaches them respect - not just for the wave, but for themselves, for each other and for their culture and environment.

"My mom, when she was a little girl, she was forbidden to speak Tahitian," he said. "For a while there, it wasn't looking good when you speak Tahitian - 'Oh, you're too rude, or you're from the street, or from Teahupo'o, in the bush.'"

Now, Tahitian language and culture is a source of pride in Teahupo'o, where clear rivers run through the village to the black sand beach and the lagoon.

Olympic gold for 22-year-old local surfer Kauli Vaast also generated great mana, spiritual power or cultural pride.

"Only kings were able to surf here before," David said. "For us, surfing is sacred, it's the culture - like dancing, like canoe paddling, like singing, like making food for everybody."

David said the community had worked to ensure having one of the world's most powerful and alluring waves on their doorsteps fully benefited the village. Locals now provide surf camps, camera operators, taxi boats, and water safety patrols when top surfers come for big swells.

"It took us a long time but we finally did it. Now, nobody comes in and does it like the circus - we regulate," says David.

"For us, it was the thing to do, to represent our mana, to represent our tupuna, our ancestors."

The Olympics brought fresh challenges, with locals fighting to reduce the impact of new Games infrastructure, including insisting that a new tower on the reef to judge the surf contest be scaled back to reduce its environmental impact.

RESTORE THE RAHUI

The reef - "the oxygen we breath," says David - is at the heart of the surf and the village, a unique, living structure that not only creates the perfect waves, but is a larder, a playground and a workplace for almost everyone who lives there.

Ten years ago, however, the reef was struggling.

Plagued by over-fishing and hit more frequently by damaging storms, a decision was made by the community to re-introduce a rahui over a 768-hectare area south of the village, banning fishing and other activities.

"In the older culture, it was the king who decided these things and you couldn't go against it, you would be killed," and many people were afraid of the concept, said Rochette, who manages the Teahupo'o rahui.

The approach has been modernised and democratised, with the communities across French Polynesia now instigating rahui and deciding how to operate them to sustain their environment and resources.

South of Teahupo'o, buoys are set out to mark the rahui limits, and locals monitor the zone to ensure compliance. They say the impact has been mostly positive, with the reef thriving and fish stocks improving.

Scrambling over streams and paths of broken coral, Rochette tells the story of a sacred rock and its role in ancestral fishing rituals, recounts battles that turned the lagoon red with blood and details how surfing was introduced here by twin brothers.

While the cultural aspects have been significant, ascribing an economic value to the environment has also been important.

Cliff Kapono, a Hawaiian coral scientist, surfer and Polynesian activist, worked with locals to map and value the economic impact that works around the Olympics could have on the reef and lagoon using an established formula.

Kapono's MEGA Lab estimated a direct economic impact of $170,000 for disturbing and destroying corals at the judging tower site and $1.3 million in total for the wider reef disruption around Teahupo'o from dredging and other works.

Beyond the economics, the idea of being guardians of the ocean was intrinsic to the Polynesian philosophy, Kapono said.

"There are people and communities across Polynesia that are defending their reefs. Whether they get hit by the Olympic people, or over-fishing, or nuclear testing, there are people that are going to stand up in these communities.

"For us in Polynesia, that's who we are, that's our roots," says Kapono. "This is now the war we fight. We fight for our environment." REUTERS

The Hard Way Into the U.S. Open: The Battle of the Qualifiers

Thirty-two spots remain unclaimed in the tournament, and the math is as brutal as it is simple. Win three matches, and you’re in.

Michael Zheng, a tennis player with an intense expression and an orange shirt, holds his racket in a position of readiness.

By David Waldstein

Michael Zheng shifted uncomfortably on the base line of Court 13 at the U.S. Open, an outdoor court he had played on as a boy in an elite training program. But this time there was much more at stake, with hundreds of fans crammed in on all four sides, chanting, “Let’s go, Michael,” for the local favorite.

Mr. Zheng, who grew up in Montville, N.J., and is a star player at Columbia University, was playing for the chance to qualify for one of the last spots at the United States Open.

Just like 63 other players in the men’s singles qualifying draw, Mr. Zheng, 20, needed to win three straight matches in the preliminary week of the Open to join the big boys. The 16 players who qualify gain entry into the main draw, where the likes of Carlos Alcaraz will compete for the title and a $3.6 million prize.

But standing across the net from Mr. Zheng on Tuesday was a serious opponent: Kamil Majchrzak, a 28-year-old player from Poland who was once ranked No. 75 in the world and had reached the third round of the U.S. Open main draw in 2019. Mr. Zheng had dropped the first set and was clearly suffering from cramps.

It was already a tricky draw, but Mr. Zheng, who comes from a family of achievers, has excelled at whatever level of tennis he plays. As an 18-year-old junior, he went all the way to the final of the boys’ singles at Wimbledon in 2022. This year, he became the first Columbia player to reach the final of the N.C.A.A. singles tournament, and this month he won his first professional title in a challenger tournament (the minor leagues of tennis) in Mississippi.

He hopes to make a career out of tennis, which is only viable for about 200 players around the world at a time. The rest must fight their way in via challenger events and the qualifying rounds at major tournaments, like the U.S. Open.

“That is the goal,” Mr. Zheng said last week after a workout at Mountain Lakes High School in New Jersey. “I have the confidence to take on players at this level.”

Mr. Zheng first learned the sport from his father, Joe Zheng, an immigrant from China. When Michael was about 10, he earned a coveted spot to train with elite coaches in a program run by the United States Tennis Association at the same site of the U.S. Open. The only problem was that the Zheng family lived in Montville, N.J., at least a two-hour commute by public transportation — each way.

Between the ages of 11 and 13, he made the journey three days a week on public transportation. He might have looked out of place among all the busy commuters, a slight middle-schooler carrying his rackets and homework as he trudged out of the Port Authority in Midtown Manhattan and down into the No. 7 train. It was a long ride to the mostly empty site of the largest and most lucrative tennis tournament in the world. In the summer, the program shifted to Cunningham Park in Fresh Meadows, Queens, an even longer commute, and Michael would need to wake up at 5:30 a.m.

“It actually wasn’t that bad,” he said. “You get used to it.”

Mr. Zheng loved the program, he said, and he never complained to his parents about the commute. How could he, knowing what they had gone through at the same ages?

Joe Zheng was born in 1969 and grew up in a small, rural village in Hubei Province in China. His mother, Mei Liu, was from a neighboring village. The homes in the village did not have plumbing, Joe recalled, so they would fetch their water by bucket from the nearby Yangtze River. After school, they would work on their family farms, harvesting rice. There was no electricity in the villages, they said, until they were in middle school.

“It’s so completely different,” Michael Zheng said. “I hear the stories and sometimes I’m like, ‘This can’t even be real.’ I’m so fortunate to be in the position I’m in, thanks to them.”

Joe and Mei made their way to college and graduate school in China and came to the United States in 1998, where they earned more graduate degrees and have worked as software engineers, among other tech jobs, eventually settling in New Jersey, where Joe passed on his love of tennis.

Last year, Michael won a qualifying match at the U.S. Open, and if he could build on that and qualify this year, he would be guaranteed $152,000. That would help support the enormous bills that tennis players accrue, mainly for travel and coaching, which they pay themselves.

Joe Zheng estimated that he and his wife have spent between $300,000 and $500,000 to support their son’s ambition, and many families pay a lot more. If Michael lost in the first round of qualifications this year, he would get only $25,000.

“As long as he was working hard and having fun, we were happy to support him,” said Joe Zheng, who watched his son’s match from the stands, cheering along with everyone else.

At one point, his son was only two points from victory. All around them on similar courts, others with long journeys and high ambitions were fighting for their dreams, too. But on Court 13, the cramping would not relent, and Michael Zheng lost a very close match, 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-5.

The crowd, which has been so vociferously in his favor, fell silent for a moment, before clapping to show their appreciation. As Mr. Zheng left the court, the sun setting behind him on the same site to which he took those long bus and subway rides alone, he paused to sign autographs.

“I was just happy to be here again playing,” he said after Tuesday’s match. “Just build on that and become stronger and better next year, so I can have a better run.”

Exclusive: Missing superyacht owner Mike Lynch is a 'hero' and a 'freedom fighter', says business partner

Posted: 20 August 2024 | Last updated: 20 August 2024

David Tabizel, the friend and business partner of technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch has described him as a “hero” and a “freedom fighter”Asked about Lynch’s presumed demise Mr Tabizel said he was hoping for a miracle and added that he was probably the most resilient human being he'd ever met. In an exclusive interview, Tabizel told Michelle Dewberry on GB News: “Mike is a very human man. He's probably the most resilient human being I've ever met in my life. I've never heard him tell a lie.“I think he has an incisive personality. If anyone could still exist in these terrible physical circumstances, if there is an air pocket, he'd have found it. So let's just keep our fingers crossed. First of all, I don't want to talk about him in the past tense.“He's one of the rarest beasts you'll ever find. He is a great scientist. He's a teacher. He's a good communicator. He's a businessman, and unlike most entrepreneurs, he can get the big idea right, but also manage everything.“He has an intense, focused energy, and I think, a real sense of equity. He's up there among three or four entrepreneurs of our generation, Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, I wouldn't put Elon Musk in that category, who can do everything and he can.“It's been an honour to work with him and know him for the last 30 years. The last time I spoke to him, we were swapping messages earlier on, well last week, talking about meeting up at his place in Suffolk, talking about hearing aids, we both suffered some hearing loss, and he was talking about maybe using AI to look at ways of accelerating the effectiveness of these devices.“And the important thing here is that Autonomy was probably the first big artificial intelligence company on the planet, let alone in Britain.”Asked about the US fraud trial revolving around the sale of Autonomy, he said: “It's terrible. Mike Lynch was a billionaire. He's a billionaire with the most extraordinary intellect and with the most extraordinary resilience. He dug down, and undoubtedly he would have been in prison if it weren't for his wealth, his intelligence, his commitment.“But who wants to lose 10 or 12 years of your life doing that? But he did that, and I think that is a lesson that we have to learn now on both sides of the Atlantic, when business gets into government and owns the law, we're all of us vulnerable, all of us.”He added: “He's exceptional because there is no intellectual weakness to the man. His character is strong. His focus is laser-like. But right now, we have to have our economic sovereignty back. We should be encouraging and celebrating our entrepreneurs. That is what's going to drag us out of our current malaise.“If we don't, we're just going to become a third world country. We have to show people that the way to get out of this economic malaise is by digging in, by being ambitious, by being positive, by understanding how to create capital, and by basically making sure that our governments understand this and don't throw a brain drain right in our faces, which could basically lead the country into decades of near poverty.“Listen, this is a wonderful country full of the most exciting innovation, we have to build a consensus that creates wealth and Mike Lynch is probably Britain's greatest businessman of the last 35 years.“My prayers are with the family and I just hope there's a miracle coming. And if anyone can pull it off, it'll be Mike Lynch.”He added: “If there's any chance of him surviving this - he has the strength, the strength to do this, and I hope that we aren't talking in the past tense. He is a remarkable man.“And if you've had the blessing and the honour to have worked with him or known him, he's a force of nature, and somebody who I think will become a business and intellectual and scientific legend in the decades to come.”WATCH ABOVE.
