  1. First Sailboat Buying Advice

I've been looking for a few weeks now for a boat under $3,000 with a trailer and have come across a Pearson Triton 18 and a McVay Victoria 18. I am looking for advice based on the ideal boat for outlined below. The Pearson in particular has been difficult to find information on, I can really only ever find reviews on the larger Triton's.

The factory made a shorter version called the Victoria 17, but with a transom hung rudder, which solved the issue. The cutter rig was an option, but very few were actually built (3 or 4) and it wasn't to address a weather helm issue, but to satisfy a perceived client demand. The sloop is the better sailor by far.

  3. VICTORIA 18

The number built listed is only a rough approximation. Just before the factory closed, a VICTORIA 17 was introduced, a shortened version of the 18 with an outboard rudder. It is thought that they exist in very small numbers. Victoria Yachts was a company founded by the designers son, Bill McVay. The location was:

It's a thrilling boat to sail, because it heels over very easily. You spend most of the sail over at about 30º, sometimes more! Catalina 22.

  8. McVay Victoria 18

OP. The Vic 18, like any small and light sailboat, initially gets bumped easily with small gusts of wind. this can be disconcerting to new sailers (aka girls ) , but believe me, the Vic gets _very_ solid in a blow, and once you convey that message, your passengers will settle down quickly. a 1200b boat with 550b of lead in it's butt will want to stay on it's feet like the old rock-em-sock-em ...

Posts: 3,712. Re: Victoria 18 and St Pete info. A few thoughts. First get the bottom cleaned. The growth will make a slow boat slower. Second it is what it is. Pack food, water, rain gear, anchor, shanghai someone for a crew and take your time. As I recall that is a 18 nm trip. Even at 3kts it is a day trip.

  12. Heel good times in a Victoria 18

Victoria 18. It has, like, zero initial stability. It has a pretty narrow beam and rounded sides, so it's tippy as **** even when you're just walking around it to rig the sails. When a puff hits you go over to 30º like nothing, but then it hardens up and just kind of lingers there, so you get to sail around all day with your feet braced on the ...

The Victoria seems like it's built a little heartier, but the Com-Pac is also quite solid and has some benefits.. Like.

A P-18 is listed as 1100 pounds displacement, and the Victoria as 1250. (sailboatdata.com) I tow my 192, 1400 pounds listed, with a Subaru Forester, which lists a capacity of 2200 or 2400 pounds (depending on where you find the spec.) I don't really like to do it, because surely the boat and trailer at at or exceeding that max.

  22. First sailboat advice: Sunfish or Victoria 18

Will Gilmore said: The sunfish isn't self righting, but it is much easier to right than a laser or a hobie. It won't sink of swamped. Jackdaw's earlier question and point about launching is worth considering. With a keel, even a small one, there are short, shallow boat ramps that won't accommodate her well.
