Adventure Cruises in Turkey

Turkey has a long and beautiful costliane, and adventure cruises offer the chance to explore some of the lesser-known gems of this impressive part of the world. The shoreline is dotted with beautiful tiny islands, clear blue waters and long sandy beaches.

Adventure cruises in Turkey offer the chance to explore some of the lesser-known gems of this impressive part of the world. Along the southern coast of Turkey from Marmaris, cruises will discover huge natural parks, tiny archipelagos, and a host of modern and ancient cities and towns. The Turquoise Coast stretches from Bodrum to Alanya and is home to some of Turkey’s best-known holiday resorts. The shoreline has beautiful tiny islands, clear blue waters, and long sandy beaches. The waters are also incredibly calm, especially in the bays and inlets of the smaller island groups. These are ideal places for sunbathing and swimming from a small ship cruise, and for the more adventurous, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and sea kayaking are all available.

To say Turkey has a rich history is an understatement; the coastline and islands are covered with ancient sites, many of which are now found in abandoned locations. There are some locations such as Patara where visitors can have the best of both worlds, a long sandy beach with the remains of an ancient Roman city. One can visit several sunken ruins from a small ship cruise in Turkey. Some of these include the opportunity to snorkel or kayak around directly from your small cruise boat.

Best Turkey cruises and areas to visit

Cruises in Turkey can hop seamlessly from one beauty spot to the next, so you don’t have to miss the best of the amazing Turkish coastline. Small ship cruises mean you can be tucking into a delicious traditional meal on the streets of Marmaris one day and exploring the ancient ruins of Lycia the next.

The city of Bodrum is a port located on the southwest coast of Turkey, near Muğla province, and this ancient city is a must-see for history enthusiasts. The modern-day port has an exciting and diverse culture, which can be seen in its many cruises headed out onto the water, from where you will enjoy breathtaking views.  It has been called "the most beautiful place in Asia" because of its rich history and because it is home to one of the seven wonders of the world - The Mausoleum Of Halicarnassos, which holds some impressive temples.

Yassica Islands

Within the Fethiye Gulf are the five islands that make up the tiny archipelago of Yassica. The islands are all close together and believed to have joined once, as indicated by ancient ruins under the water. It is worth snorkeling around these ruins as it is one of few ruins not protected by a ban on swimmers. For those who prefer to explore terrestrial history, there are also ruins from the Byzantine period on the island of Haci Halil.

The main town of Dalyan is along the riverside with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The town is a popular hotspot for visitors who enjoy the lively atmosphere and visit the nearby ruins of Kaunos. Visitors can burn away the hours exploring the city's remains and take in the spectacular tombs carved into the rock faces along the Dalyan River. Another of the best-known beaches in southern Turkey is in Dalyan: Iztuzu Beach is known not only as a beautiful spot for swimming but also as a nesting site for loggerhead turtles. It is worth noting that while the beach is open to the public during the day, it is closed from eight in the evening to protect these turtles and their nests.

Close to the stunning resorts of Kas and Kalkan, the sunken ruins of Kekova are a perfect stop-off on a small ship cruise. Many will stop off overnight thanks to the ideal water conditions and the chance to see the remains of a true sunken city. The ruins can be seen from your small ship cruise or sea kayak, which lets you get up close and enjoy paddling around this lovely coastline.

Small-ship cruises in Marmaris offer an intimate and enchanting way to explore the Turkish Riviera's stunning coastlines and crystal-clear waters. This picturesque port city, nestled between rugged mountains and the azure sea, is the perfect gateway to the Aegean's hidden gems. Guests can look forward to discovering secluded bays, ancient ruins, and charming islands, all while enjoying the warm, Turkish hospitality. The blend of cultural experiences, from traditional Turkish baths to the vibrant bazaars, along with opportunities for snorkeling, swimming, and kayaking in tranquil coves, makes Marmaris an ideal destination for travelers seeking a blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion on their small-ship cruise adventure.

Best time to cruise in Turkey

The best time to cruise to Turkey depends on your interests, budget, and love of the heat. The summer months, June to August, are hot and can be slightly humid, although this is less so by the coast, where a sea breeze helps keep the evenings cool. Spring is an excellent time to visit on a small ship cruise in Turkey as the weather is generally sunny and warm but not as hot as the summer months, making this a good time for historical visits and hiking. The Autumn is perfect if you enjoy some heat and want warm waters. The water temperature remains high during the summer, but the nights are not as hot and humid as in summer.

How to get to Turkey

Turkey has several international airports along its coastline, the largest of which are in Marmaris and Antalya. These airports have direct flights from major European airports, and seasonal flights are also available to smaller airports at Dalyan and Bodrum. For those traveling further afield, flying directly to Istanbul International Airport and then to the coastal airports from there is possible. Once you are in Turkey, minibusses and private taxis are reasonably easy to use, and hiring a car is inexpensive; however, the roads can be chaotic and sometimes dangerous.

small yacht turkey

History comes alive on this cruise around the stunning islands and coast of Turkey.

Turkey by land is full of the mystique of times gone by. But when you explore Turkey by sea, you’re treated to all this, with the addition of stunning coastline and islands. From exploring an ancient, abandoned ghost town on the island of Kayakoy, to picking up some cooking tips from a local in Kekova, there are cultural and historic experiences aplenty. And that’s before you even consider the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea that are simply begging you to pop on a snorkel and slide in off the back of your gulet.

Is this trip right for you?

This is a small ship Adventure Cruise, which means you’ll be sailing on a traditional Turkish gulet with up to 31 other people. The boat is comfortable, but the focus of this trip is exploring the wonders of Turkey – not the on-board activities. For example, instead of a pool, we have the sea itself and instead of a casino, we’ve got board games and a good book. There’s also no formal dress code to worry about. Wi-Fi is available for a small charge.

Our ship uses engine power, with the occasional opportunity to hoist the sails, so all cabins will experience light engine noise when the ship is moving (and occasionally when we drop anchor). It’s probably worth packing earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

Onshore activities and excursions will involve a bit of walking. You’ll be visiting ancient sites and historical places, and at times you may have to cross cobbled streets and uneven ground. At certain times of year, the weather can get quite warm, so if you have any concerns, please speak to your local leader before taking part.

There are no lifts (elevators) on-board our ships, so you’ll have to navigate a few steep flights of stairs. Handrails are always available.

Our traditional gulet is air conditioned but the air conditioner does not run at night to limit noise from the generator.

The cabins on the M/S Grand Admiral gulet have ensuites and are comfortable, but quite small. It is advised to keep luggage to a minimum and use a soft bag for easier storage.

There are no future departures for this trip at this stage.

Merhaba! Welcome to Istanbul, the eclectic city that the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans have all called home. Your welcome meeting will be at your included hotel at 6 pm today. After the meeting, you may wish to join your new group and local leader for dinner to get to know each other before your adventure begins. Special Information It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place. An airport arrival transfer is included. This complimentary transfer is valid from both Istanbul New Airport and (IST) and Sabiha Gocken Airport (SAW), Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 15 days prior to travel (note - we may not be able confirm request made within 15 days of travel). Once you have provided your details a transfer representative will be booked to meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel.

Hit the streets of Istanbul early to beat the crowds and head to the Hippodrome, known today as Sultanahmet Square. Visit the ruins and monuments in the square, then continue to the Hagia Sophia Museum, a historic building used as both a cathedral and a mosque since it was built in the sixth century. Head back to the hotel to gather your belongings, then transfer to the airport for a 1.5-hour flight to Dalaman Airport. Upon arrival, board a private vehicle and transfer to Fethiye Port. Climb aboard a traditional gullet, settle in and enjoy dinner on board. Spend the evening at port.

Today you will cruise to Oludeniz, where you’ll anchor for lunch and a swimming break. From here, the next stop will be Gemiler Island where you can get off the boat for an early evening walk and pay a visit to Kayakoy. Kayakoy was once a thriving village but since the 1920s the ancient stone houses have been abandoned. Now protected by the Turkish government, it provides the opportunity to enjoy a quiet, traditional Turkish lifestyle. Open 24 hours, the ghost village has an entrance fee which helps towards the upkeep of the paths and rubbish clearance. One church in the lower area of the village, Kataponagia, is of particular interest due to a room out the back – it was used to collect the bones of the dead! Wander the ruins, enjoy the solitude, or play backgammon and sip tea with the locals. Dinner is included on the gulet and you will stay overnight in the Gemiler Strait.

This morning you’ll cross Yedi Burunlar (Seven Capes) smoothly before anchoring at Yesilkoy Bay, close to Kalkan for breakfast and a swimming break. Then you’ll cruise to Kas Harbour, where you’ll anchor until tomorrow. Being one of the most important ancient Greek towns of Lycia, Kas gained importance in Roman Times and eventually became the centre of Episcopacy in Byzantine times. After lunch, you’ll head in to Kas where your local leader will take you for an orientation walk to see the monumental tombs from Lycian times as well as hidden shops, cafes and restaurants. After free time in town, your leader will take to the Ancient Theatre where you can watch a beautiful sunset while enjoying a local wine. Have a local dinner in one of Kas’ restaurants before heading back to the boat.

After breakfast, you’ll cruise to the sunken city of Kekova, where you can swim and snorkel in crystal blue waters. Enjoy lunch at Tersane Bay where you will see an old shipyard from the Roman Period and a church from the Byzantine times. Spend the afternoon tasting fabulous local cuisine, floating over an ancient sunken city or exploring Lycian tombs. For dinner, you will meet a local host who will run a simple cooking class so you can learn how to cook local specialties.

After breakfast, you’ll anchor at Kalekoy and spend the morning visiting a crusader fortress. As a mid-morning snack, you’ll have a chance to try local, homemade ice cream in the ancient ruins of Simena. From here, you’ll cruise to Demre for lunch and swimming break before heading off on a tour from Cayagzı Bay to the ruins of Myra, a Lycian city. Tonight, you’ll anchor in Gokkaya Bay for dinner and an overnight stay.

This morning you’ll begin cruising early in the morning to Liman Agzi Bay with breakfast being served on the way. On arrival, it will be time for lunch and a swimming break. After lunch, you’ll head to Kalkan and, weather permitting you’ll visit Kaputas beach, one of the biggest man-made beach in Turkey. Anchor in Firnaz Bay for dinner and an overnight stay.

An early start today will enable you to cruise to Turunc Pinari Bay for lunch, with a swimming break at Butterfly Valley on the way. After lunch, you’ll head back to Fethiye Harbor and get off from the boat for a walking tour in Fethiye. You’ll get to visit Fethiye Museum to see King Midas’ Monumental Tomb before wandering the streets of the town for a leisurely afternoon stroll. Next, you’ll head to the Fish Market where you can buy fish of your choice for the kitchen staff of a local restaurant to prepare for your dinner. There will be street musicians walking around, serenading you with local music. Special Information Please note that the swim stop at Butterfly Valley is weather dependent.

This morning you’ll have breakfast on board before saying goodbye to your amazing crew. After docking, you’ll head back to Dalaman Airport for your flight back to Istanbul. You’ll make your way straight to the hotel to check in and can then enjoy a free afternoon to continue exploring. There are so many wonderful things to see and do, including a visit to the Spice Bazaar or the Blue Mosque. If you and the group would like to head out for a final dinner together, your leader will be able to recommend some brilliant local restaurants.

Today marks the end of your journey. You can head off any time after breakfast, whether you’re heading onward or spending more time in Istanbul.

Itineraries are subject to change.

You’ll feast on Turkish cuisine prepared with fresh ingredients. And you’ll enjoy a level of service that is simply unmatched in Turkey. We are a family business, and our repeat guests tell us they like our friendliness, honesty and professional attitude. On a Serenity charter, you are always our honored guest. But we hope you’ll also become our friend.

Our Services

  • Crewed Yacht Charter
  • Yacht Brokerage
  • Charter Management
  • Yacht Management
  • Build & Refıt

Many of our guests tell us their Serenity charter yacht vacation was one of the best experiences of their lives. Our charter yachts travel the spectacular coastlines of Turkey and Croatia, taking you to charming coastal villages and secluded coves and beaches. Click below to see our yachts up close.

We act as yacht brokers for vessels we know very well. If you are looking to buy one of our yachts, we can quickly answer your questions and provide detailed information. If you’d like to sell your yacht, you can expect personal attention, an honest value assessment and a marketing plan designed to sell your yacht quickly and at the best price possible.

Successfully chartering a yacht takes experience, attention to detail and a solid marketing plan. Over the years, we’ve become quite good at all three, and we’ve built a reputation for excellence. When you hire us to manage your yacht charters, you’ll save time and money, keep your crew and yacht in top shape, and get the most from your investment. And importantly, you’ll be confident that your yacht is in good hands.

We make yachting more fun by helping you with the details. Our yacht management clients trust us to manage their yachts in a way that maintains their value and saves money in the long run. Depending on the size of your yacht and your goals, we can manage your maintenance, finances, crew or charters.

Our shipyard has built or refit vessels as small as 8 meters and as large as 46 meters. We’re different than many other shipyards because our team can take your boat building project from its earliest conception all the way to launch day. This means you can work directly with your shipbuilding team, saving time and cutting down on costs. And our approach ensures that every part of your project will meet Serenity’s high standards.

Unlike most yacht charter and management companies, our family business includes our own shipyard in Turkey. We have built and refit projects up to 46 meters in both wood and steel – including some of the Turkish gulets that we offer for charter. Our naval architects, project managers and post construction management team can handle every phase of a shipbuilding project in house – saving both time and money in the construction process. The skipper of this Fethiye yacht charter is renowned in these parts for his excellent regional cooking. The crew pride themselves on cooking up a storm and serving meals while anchored in beautiful bays while making sure each night is special and unique.

If learning how to sail is something that floats your boat, your captain and skipper offer sailing lessons too. Who knows, maybe you’ll be hooked and will want to hire your next yacht bareboat (no captain or crew) and do a DIY sailing trip.

This yacht charter offers a wholesome local experience at a very reasonable cost. Split between six, the deal is even sweeter.

Best Overnight Yacht Charter in Fetinye – Lagoon 500 Catamaran

Lagoon 500 Catamaran Turkey

  • Great for longer trips

There’s a lot to do on a yacht along the Turkish coast. From the ancient ruins dotted along the coastline to secluded bays, the longer you have on board, the more you’ll get to experience.

This Lagoon 500 catamaran gets our pick for the best overnight yacht charter in Turkey. They specialise in overnight trips and week-long rentals. A week-long trip with 10 mates aboard sounds like a pretty epic holiday to us.

A longer rental often works out as a much lower cost per day than single-day charters. Plus, it’s a unique and exciting way to travel.

The catamaran has four cosy bedrooms with big windows and views out over the big blue. There are four bathrooms, a kitchen, and multiple dining areas.

The star of the show is the net hammock that stretches between the two hulls. On a longer charter, you’ll have plenty of time to chill here, get stuck into your holiday by reading and catch some rays.

You’ve got all you need to feel at home on the sea, though remember, your job is to sit back and relax. When you charter a yacht in Turkey, the captain and crew are there to work out all the logistics.

Best Yacht Charter with Watersports – Wooden Deluxe Gulet

Wooden Deluxe Gulet Turkey

  • Full access to watersport gear

If water sports are your thing, this epic Fethiye yacht charter has all the good stuff included. You get full access to the jet ski, snorkel gear, banana boat, waterskis, wakeboard, kneeboard, canoes and fishing equipment. An impressive list, right? You’ll be able to cruise the coast of the Aegean Sea and try some new skills aboard this beauty.

Perfect your kneeboard or wakeboard 360 spins. Wrestle with your best friend and see who gets thrown off the tube first. You’re gonna have a blast.

While it is the impressive amount of watersport equipment that caught our attention with this one, the yacht itself is a true beauty. She is a 131-foot traditional wooden gulet. This is a great choice for bigger groups and parties, with space for 16 guests and eight separate cabins with their own bathroom.

A day out on this yacht charter is bound to be a damn good time and a sweet way to spend some time on the water in Fethiye.

Yacht Turkey

  • Eat Delicious Food – Many yacht charters in Turkey come with a chef on board, and amazing Turkish meals can be arranged for you by your crew. Eating Turkish food in Turkey is a must, why not try something new on a yacht?
  • Go swimming – Taking a plunge into the crystal clear water and is a must, for obvious reasons!
  • Drinks on deck – No need to worry about who will drive home, everything is taken care for you on a yacht charter. Enjoy a cold drink (or several) on the yacht, you’re on holiday after all.
  • Try Raki – On the same topic, If you want to embrace Turkish culture, you’ve gotta try their national alcoholic drink. Raki, also known as Lion’s Milk, is a spirit made of twice distilled grapes and aniseed. It’s flavour is similar to Ouzo, so it packs a punch. This is commonly enjoyed to celebrate special occasions like birthdays and weddings or to commiserate over a broken heart. Surely a fancy yacht charter on the Turkish coast is reason enough to celebrate?

Anyone who has been on a jetski before can tell you – it’s a whole lotta fun. Sailing in Turkey - Geography

Turkey, the size of France and Germany together, is located between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It’s coastline runs 5,176 miles (8,330 km) with the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean Sea to the west and the Mediterranean to the west, plus the Bosphorus, connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. The capital of Turkey, Istanbul (or known as Constantinople before), located right on the spot – dividing or connecting Europe and Asia, is a true wealth of the Byzantine Christian and Muslim (Ottoman) Turkish heritage. It is a delightful conglomerate of numerous tourist attraction: mosques and churches, palaces and castles, Turkish bathes and bazaars. Istanbul is a pure reflection of fast-changing nation. Contrasts between old and new, high-rise modernisation and lack of adequate essentials are merely shocking. But surprisingly this striking feature enchants even more travellers to this region. Origins of the Turks The Turkish people are descendants from the tribes of Central Asian nomads or the Turkmen.

The history of Turkey is as long as that of mankind. Known as Anatolia, or as Asia Minor before, this land has seen so many ups and downs of many great civilisations ( the Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines an Ottomans) that it is hard to squeeze it in any narration. In the middle of the 11th century, the tribe invaded Persia, and when Baghdad fell in 1055, the powerful Great Seljuk Sultanate was declared as the centre of the Islamic world. But in 1243 it was defeated by the Mongols. During 13 and 14th centuries many Christians converted to Islam, because the Mongols offered reduced taxation for Muslims. The Mongols ruled Anatolia till 1335, then Osman founded a dynasty known as the Ottomans and created one of the most powerful empires. By the mid of 1500s, the Ottoman sultan was the central figure of Muslim world. In the 1870s, reformist movement known as the Young Ottomans began to push for a constitutional monarchy. In 1912 and 1913 the empire lost most of its remaining European possessions in the Balkan War. By 1918 only the heartland of Anatolia remained of the Ottoman Empire. In 1923 the Turkish Republic was proclaimed with the First Constitution implemented. During World War II, Turkey pursued peaceful policy and remained neutral.

Most of Turkey’s population (76 million people) follows Islam. The most devoted pray 5 times a day in mosques, while some Turkish do not go to mosques at all. Approximately 130,000 are non-Muslims, including Greek and Armenian Orthodox.

The Turkish language uses the Latin alphabet. But their greatly animated body language can deliver as much a message as a speech itself. The traditional segregation of the sexes is very noticeable. You may often come across groups of men sitting around smoking, drinking endless cups of tea, playing cards or dominos. Numerous festivals, where food and drinks play a central role, demonstrate sincere hospitality and generosity. The age-old Turkish traditions demand absolute respect of elders and cherish their children as national treasures.

The outcome of this country’s long and sometimes violent past reflects itself in its art and architecture and also alters or introduces its traditions and customs. Many peoples, among them Jews, Russians, Armenians, Greek and others have played an important part in Turkey ‘s complex history. It can be seen in mosaics and frescoes, colourful tile work, city walls, fortress and biblical sights.

Customs and traditions.

The Turkish customs, passed from generation to generation, are well-preserved in contemporary life. The Islamic tradition to circumcise boys from the ages of seven and ten is a very lavish occasion. All men over the age of 20 are required to serve in the military forces, which is considered to be a crucial step to manhood. Wedding festivities, which take a lot of preparations of cooking, dressing and dancing are one of the most impressive rituals. Traditional dress as a colourful designed costume, always goes with decorative scarves (both for men and women), dyed with a plant extracts. The traditional crafts are mostly man-made: copper and brass ware; woodwork; hand-printed textiles; quilts, etc. For example, needle lace is an intricate floral design crocheted in silk.

Turkey is a large territory for variety of landscapes and geographical diversity: seascapes, soft beaches and rolling mountains along the Mediterranean coast and deep lush forests of the Black Sea, with vast bare areas in the eastern part. About one quarter of Turkey is covered with forest: pine, spruce and cedar, as well as deciduous trees. 80 % of the country is in active tectonic zone, and earthquakes are frequent. Cappadocia is a must see geological miracle. The hardened volcanic ash (the tuff) was weathered away, creating some majestic formations. Earlier in age even cities were constructed underground, because the softness of the tuff made it easy to build different dwellings underground.

Flora and Fauna

Turkey can surprise any naturalist with abundance of bird life (more than 440 species), larger mammals and diversity of plants. Some of this unspoiled countryside zones are declared as national parks. Each area presents different flora and fauna. The forests of the eastern provinces are habitat for bears, wolves or jackals. The Mediterranean coast grows roses, orchids, lilies, daffodils, etc. Wetlands are famous for water lilies and irises; while woodlands – peonies and jasmine.

Various range of mountains and coastal line of seaside correspondently influence climatic regions in Turkey. The Aegean and the Mediterranean will produce 84F (29C) in July and 48F (9C) in January. Winter is mostly a rainy season here. Annual precipitation in Antalya is 39 in, while the rainfall along the Black Sea is much heavier – 96 inches a year. The northeast has warm summers, but colder winters with temperatures of 16F (-9C). The central plateau has hot dry summers of 73F (23C) and chilly moist winters of 32F (0 C). The coastline of Turkey predictably delivers warm summers and mild winters, with mostly sunny days throughout the year. From May till the end of August it may be windy, but it never reaches its 25 Knots Mark. When going east the winds become weaker, thus more comfortable for sailing.

All national and regional holidays can be divided into 3 categories: Religious feasts celebrated by the Islamic people; festivities associated with events or people of historic significance; traditional festivals, usually tied with a seasonal theme. Turkey has four distinct seasons and different types of celebrations are spread accordingly. In spring there are Tulip Festival in April, Yunus Emre Culture and Art week in May, and Marmaris Race week or International Yachting Festival the 2nd week of May. In summer because of the high temperatures, there is nothing better than to be closer to the seaside. International swimming race is held near the Greek island of Meis. Kirkpinar Festival and Grease wrestling Championship is usually in the last week of June. Istanbul Music Festival is a well known event for opera, theatre and ballet lovers. Autumn is a harvesting season, no wonder there are so many festivals based on the crops: watermelon, grapes, etc. The still warm sea welcomes water sports enthusiasts. International Bodrum Cup Regatta is held in the third week of October, and limited only to few categories of wooden yachts. Race week (last week of October to first of Nov.) takes place in Marmaris and is supervised by the Turkish Sailing Federation. Second week of September will attract dance couples to six-day Tango Festival, also held in Marmaris. In winter the local museums and art galleries will give you a shelter from rain and snow. Although Christmas is ignored by the Turks, New Year’s Day is widely celebrated throughout Turkey. In the mid of January, it is worth visiting the ruined Roman theatre of Ephesus, where the Camel Wrestling Championship is held.

Conveniently surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea in the south, the Aegean Sea in the west and the Black Sea up north, it is no wonder that water sports, and especially sailing, are prevailing in this area. Besides, Turkey provides the longest sailing season in the Mediterranean. There are indeed a lot of advantages for sailors in this area. Secluded sandy bays and coves, lush forested hills, ruins of ancient dwellings – sometimes are hidden from explorers and can be discovered only by water. So, “12 Knots” will give you the opportunity to enjoy this paradise with bareboat or skippered yacht charter. Once you reach your destination - sunny weather, pristine beaches, balsamic waters – will create the most relaxing atmosphere for you. Turkey provides not only its picturesque scenery, but also upscale marinas, well- equipped with secure moorings and other useful facilities for yachts. They are well-located to make it easy to get provisions or meals at the restaurants.

One of the main yacht centres, located on the Bodrum peninsula, is a perfect spot for sailing or dinghy racing. The 15 century Castle, well visible from the harbour, houses a Museum of Underwater Archeology these days. Yalikavak, used to be a sponge-fishing port, is a good place to try local delicacies: sea beans and stuffed marrow flowers.

Marmaris, which used to be a quaint fishing village, set in a sheltered bay, is now a vibrant resort and can be easily compared to the Spanish Ibiza. Marmaris is another popular sailing and diving centre with Netsel Marina, as Turkey ‘s largest and most luxurious marinas, and several smaller ones as well. There is berthing for over 750 yachts up to 130 ft (40m) long. Marmaris is a safe anchorage with no underwater currents, sandbanks or rocks.

On the way from Bodrum to Marmaris you’ll come across Gocek, a small village with 5 well- equipped marinas. The public marinas have berth for above 350 boats with a further 200 berth available in a secluded private marina. The ruins of the Roman town of Lydae, with two mausoleums and a fort, can be visible at the tip of the peninsula.

At Borrow A Boat we’re on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboats across Europe to a sailing boat, motor yacht, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean and Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world’s most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

Catamarans are the fastest growing type of charter yacht at the moment and once you’ve sailed on one it’s easy to see why. In terms of your ideal catamaran charter think of locations like Thailand, the Ionian Islands, BVI (British Virgin Islands), Croatian Adriatic, Ibiza, French riviera and Mallorca for your sailing adventure.

Types of Catamarans Available For Rent Or Charter In Turkey:

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the catamaran yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Types of Catamarans Available:

Sailing Catamarans : Sailing catamaran yachts are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull sailing yacht. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the cabin as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran : These motor boat are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don’t have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Catamaran Sailing Areas In Turkey

Whether on a crewed gulet charter or bareboat catamaran charter in Turkey, there is a lot of choice when it comes to your catamaran sailing holiday.

With Gocek and Fethiye the main centres, the western Lycian coast is one where you can go on a relatively quiet and laid back Turkey private yacht charter. A large natural bay mostly sheltered from the prevailing Meltemi winds, you will find quiet anchorages like Kapi Creek and moor in a secluded bay such as Wall Bay or Cold Water Bay, with one restaurant and only goats for company. Sail along the coastline and explore the beautiful Turkish coast, wandering sandy beaches all to yourself.

Bounded by the busy towns of Marmaris and Bodrum, the Turquoise Coast (aka the Turkish Riviera) is going to be a yacht chartering holiday with a bit more of a pulse! Bodrum is a very traditional holiday resort and popular with the country’s elite, and Marmaris is an important port for the country. Our team would be happy to help plan your Turkey yacht charter itinerary

Based in Istanbul, a Marmara Sea yacht charter is one where you will be able to sail between the continents of Europe and Asia in a short hop. this part of the Turkish coastline is an ancient border of civilisations you will enjoy the cultural attractions from the timeless city of Istanbul to island hopping around Marmara Adasi.

Crewed Catamaran Charter or Bareboat:

When it comes to a Turkey catamaran charter you typically have two choices - bareboat or crewed charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all catamaran searches to be with or without skipper depending on what charter yachts you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your catamaran hire.

*Blue Cruise / Gulet charter:* You can do a crewed, blue cruise catamaran charter in Turkey. This form of luxury yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications beforehand. For a luxury gulet you will pay a fixed fee for the crew and skipper as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of yacht rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases, skippers will also be the boat owner (typically day charter) which means they will know all the best - secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of charter boat.

*Bareboat* *Catamaran Charter:* For skilled sailors, a bareboat yacht charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the charter yacht while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In Turkey

If you are on a crewed Turkey catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail - you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter and in some countries a day skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

*International Certificate of Competence:* **This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

*RYA Qualifications:* If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Thailand (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper**, Coastal Skipper** (**sail or motor endorsement) or Yachtmaster.*

*American* *Sailing* *Association (ASA):* The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

*US Sailing:* The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should i consider when hiring a catamaran.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it’s not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Catamaran in Turkey?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Catamaran breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

What should I think of before I hire a Catamaran in Turkey?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a Catamaran?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won’t require licences.

Crossroads of the Ancient World: Exploring Greece & Turkey Itinerary

The Crossroads of the Ancient World itinerary operates round-trip from Athens, embarking and disembarking in Lavrio with an overland transfer. Cruise clockwise among a selection of well-known and off-the-beaten-path islands, including one unscripted day.

Route map of Crossroads of the Ancient World: Greece & Turkey cruise round-trip from Lavrio with overland transfers to begin & end in Athens.

The island of Delos is one of the most important mythical and historical sites in Greece and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. In myth, it’s the birthplace of the twin immortals: Artemis, goddess of animals and the hunt, and Apollo, god of healing, music and light. Spend a morning discovering the Terrace of the Lions and exquisite Temple of Apollo, two of the many incredible ruins preserved here.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

In 1999, UNESCO designated three landmarks on the Greek isle of Patmos as World Heritage sites: the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, the Cave of the Apocalypse, and the town of Chora—all for their significance in Christianity. Patmos is believed to be the island where Saint John the Theologian wrote the Book of Revelation, and the 11th-century monastery has been a pilgrimage site ever since. Tour the monastery and the cave, where Saint John dictated his gospel to his disciple, Prochoros. Later, there are options to explore the island’s whitewashed alleyways and lush courtyards, meet local artisans, or simply relax while enjoying a coffee in a local café.

For centuries, Chios has exported mastic—a type of plant resin—throughout the world. Cultivated exclusively on the island, the resin is used in liqueurs, beauty products and chewing gum. The product was once highly sought after by pirates and smugglers, and island villages were fortified with walls and watchtowers to protect the supplies. These medieval villages are uniquely beautiful, and you will have the opportunity to visit Pyrgi, known as the painted village for the black and gray geometric patterns adorning its buildings.

Step back in time as you wander through UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ephesus, one of the world’s best preserved ancient cities and once home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Peer up at the intricately carved ceiling of the iconic Library of Celsus, and marvel at the Temple of Hadrian, where the main keystone arch still holds in place nearly 2,000 years after its construction. Later, enjoy a performance of whirling dervishes—mystical Sufi dancers who spin themselves into a spiritual trance.

Gracing Bodrum’s magnificent waterfront is the Castle of St. Peter, a 15th-century crusader fortress that now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology—an impressive collection of antiquities recovered from ancient shipwrecks along the Turkish coast. Explore the exhibits, then delve into the rituals and customs surrounding Türk kahvesi, or Turkish coffee. The tradition is steeped in history and recognized on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. Enjoy a cup, accompanied by a Turkish delight, a popular local confection.

The electric blue sea around Bodrum is a water lover’s paradise, with a crystalline quality that is ideal for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking. Your expedition leader and captain will select one of the nearby islands (either Orak or Çatalada) to anchor off for a day of exploring above and beneath the water’s surface.

Laid-back Leros, one of the Dodecanese Islands, is dotted with picturesque windmills and medieval castles that make great photography subjects. Set out on a photo walk as the early sun rises above the hillcrests.

Venture to remarkable Santorini—an island archipelago formed from a single volcanic cone that erupted 3,600 years ago, burying the resident Minoan culture in ash. Sail directly into the caldera and then drive through windswept vineyards to reach the spectacular hilltop town of Oía. Tour the Archaeology Museum and excavations at Akrotiri, an important Minoan town preserved under volcanic ash much like Pompeii, with remarkably intact houses, streets, pottery and more.

Spend the morning hiking to the lighthouse on the laid-back island of Paros, followed by water activities in the bordering turquoise sea. This afternoon, venture to Naxos and choose from several activities, including a cooking class, wine tasting, a walking tour of the citadel, or a pottery demonstration. The natural beauty, incredible food, and relaxed vibe of Paros and Naxos provide an authentic Greek experience.

Arrive in Athens this morning. Enjoy a farewell breakfast on board before disembarking and transferring to the airport for your flight home.

Highly recommend this listing! Over the 6 hours we relaxed, saw (and took a shower under) waterfalls, entered coastal caves in the cliffs, and swam in beautiful waters of a small cove. The captains (we had 2) were extremely friendly and always catering to each need. Families or friends should check it out!

Awesome experience. We had 30 people onboard and the crew were amazing and the food was delicious and plentiful. The swimming stops were a highlight. Music system was nice and you can plug in your own music if you like. Great vessel and accommodating crew.

That was an amazing experience! I had a romantic trip with proposal on the boat. The yacht is great, very comfortable. Faruk and crew met everything I asked for and even more, paying attention to every detail. My girlfriend is very happy! Thank you so much!

Allie

We had a great time with Faruk on his yacht! We boated from Istanbul to Princes Islands to swim in the afternoon, then had dinner delivered to the boat before making our way back to the city during sunset. It was a great experience — super relaxing and beautiful views! We really appreciated Faruk’s hospitality and guidance regarding the best plan for the day.

Sailing serenely on the shimmering Mediterranean, my experience was nothing short of spectacular. The meticulously decorated boat set the perfect stage for a wedding proposal, with the majestic Düden Waterfall in Antalya as a breathtaking backdrop at sunset. The culinary journey was equally captivating. Freshly made salads and dips offered a delightful start, tantalizing the taste buds with every bite. As night fell, the barbecued grill fish emerged as the main course, perfectly prepared and bursting with flavor. This private tour effortlessly combined romance and gourmet delights, creating an unforgettable evening under the stars. The serene setting, stellar service, and sumptuous seafood made it a celebration to remember. Highly recommended for those seeking a magical moment on the Mediterranean.

Elias

We recently booked a small yacht in Göcek, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. From the moment we stepped on board, we were greeted by the friendly crew, including our knowledgeable captain and attentive assistance staff. Göcek is a paradise for yachting enthusiasts. Whether you’re relaxing, snorkeling in turquoise waters, or savoring delicious meals, this destination offers something for everyone. We highly recommend booking a yacht trip here—it’s an experience you won’t forget!

Authorities rescue 147 migrants in boats in 24 hours

Authorities rescue 147 migrants in boats in 24 hours

Authorities rescued nearly 150 migrants trying to reach Greece by sea in small boats over a 24-hour period, officials have said, including one that had 115 people crammed into it.

A coast guard statement said the vessel was located in distress Tuesday off the eastern Aegean Sea island of Lesvos, which is close to the Turkish coast. Three patrol vessels picked up 67 men, 27 women and 21 children, who were taken to a migrant reception center on the island.

The boat sank shortly after the passengers were taken off it, the statement said. It was one of the largest single boatloads of migrants to reach the island from Turkey in recent months.

Smugglers typically target islands close to Turkey’s coastline, but in recent months they have increasingly chosen longer routes from Libya to Crete, much farther south, and from Turkey through the central Aegean Sea, where coast guard patrols are more relaxed.

The coast guard also said Wednesday that 25 men and seven boys were rescued from a boat having difficulty 30 nautical miles (35 miles) south of Crete. It quoted the migrants as saying they had spent three days crossing the Mediterranean Sea after boarding the vessel in eastern Libya.

Two of the men were arrested on suspicion of belonging to a migrant smuggling ring that had organized the voyage.

On Tuesday, the coast guard said a total 146 migrants had been rescued in small boats off Crete and in the eastern Aegean.

According to data from the United Nations refugee agency, nearly 30,000 migrants have arrived illegally in Greece so far this year, slightly fewer than in Italy and Spain. Most are Afghan, Syrian or Egyptian nationals.

The number of migrants arriving illegally in Greece has eased slightly this year following a post-pandemic spike in 2023. [AP]

A young Afghan refugee who earned a university scholarship after fleeing the Taliban three years ago and arriving in the UK on a small boat has “never felt more welcome” despite riots targeting asylum hotels.

Sam Pordale, 24, was born in Nimruz Province in south Afghanistan, where his family members worked closely with the government, making his family a target for the Taliban.

Following the fall of the capital Kabul on August 15 2021, Sam embarked on a “horrendous” nine-month journey to the UK, enduring “humiliation” and abuse from people smugglers as he travelled through Iran, Turkey, Italy and France before arriving on a small boat in April 2022.

Arriving in the UK, the Government placed Sam in a hotel for asylum seekers in the West Midlands before he found support with the British Red Cross and connected with the University of Warwick, where he was eventually accepted on a scholarship as a politics and international studies student.

Sam travelled through Iran, Turkey, Italy and France before reaching the UK (Collect/PA Real Life)

He has since become an advocate for the education of other asylum seekers, earning him an invite to undertake an internship at the Tony Blair Institute and meet with the former prime minister, as well as recognition on The Big Issue ’s 100 Changemakers of 2024 List.

Reflecting on the dramatic changes to his life over the last three years, Sam told PA Real Life: “I never thought I would be here, it was never part of the plan, it feels like a dream.

“Once I got to university, everything was opened up for me – it was amazing how it all happened in less than a year.”

Of the recent riots in the UK, where hotels housing asylum seekers were targeted, Sam said he initially did not wish to go out but added his feelings changed once he saw others coming out in support of refugees through counter demonstrations and anti-fascist protests.

“In the beginning, I had the same feelings as I had in Afghanistan, like you’re scared to go out, you’re not allowed to go out,” he said.

Sam said it ‘feels like a dream’ to be in the UK (Collect/PA Real Life)

“I felt as though I’m not accepted here in the UK but seeing people going out to protect the hotels, for me, that was amazing to see.

“I’ve never felt more welcome once I saw people standing up for people they don’t know.

“With the counter demonstrations, it felt as though I’m part of this and I am accepted here, regardless of who I am and who I used to be before.”

Reflecting on his journey to the UK, Sam recalled being in Kabul International Airport three years ago in his attempt to flee the country following the Taliban takeover, saying it was “a mess”.

“When I got to the airport, it was a mess, and the Taliban were everywhere,” Sam said.

“They were specifically looking for people working within the government.”

Fearing he would be caught, Sam “ran away” from the airport, where he took a car away from the area.

Sam said he returned to Nimruz Province where someone he knew contacted a people smuggler, who put him in the luggage hold of a minivan late one night to cross the border to Iran.

After making the three-day journey to reach Turkey, Sam’s permit to remain in the country was set to expire so he sought passage by another people smuggler to Europe.

Following one “failed attempt” at leaving Turkey in January 2022, where he was caught at the border of Bulgaria and sent back, Sam said he managed to find a route to Italy via a six-day boat ride from Istanbul across the Mediterranean Sea.

“We were all sitting pressed against each other, we couldn’t pull our heads up because there was someone sitting there, it was horrendous,” he said.

Sam said the food on the boat was all gone by the third day and once it neared Italy it started sinking and those onboard had to be rescued by the coastguard.

After being quarantined for seven days due to Covid-19, Sam said he was sent to a refugee camp in Palermo.

He said the camp in Sicily was a “scary place” as he felt as though the people there “hated refugees” so as an English speaker he decided to head for the UK.

Sam bought a ticket to travel via train from Palermo to Milan , before taking a mixture of buses and trains to get to France, but said when he reached Dunkirk , “that was when the real humiliation came”.

“I had to sleep outside and every night for 10 days, we would try to get on a boat but we would fail,” he said.

“The people smugglers would beat everyone with a stick and at that time, I had lost a lot of weight because I didn’t have any food – I had to beg for food.”

Sam said he eventually managed to cross the English Channel in a small boat before being processed and sent to a hotel for asylum seekers in the West Midlands.

He reached out to the British Red Cross for support where he was given clothes, shoes and toiletries and he was soon scouted for a volunteer job with the organisation as he spoke English well.

“The hotel felt like a prison, that’s why I used to walk for two hours and 40 minutes each way to the Red Cross to volunteer – just to get out of the hotel,” he said.

Sam returned to the hotel where he stayed as an asylum seeker to teach English and run workshops for refugees (Collect/PA Real Life)

At the time, Sam said a professor at the University of Warwick was doing research into the issues asylum seekers face, with his manager at the Red Cross putting his name down to be interviewed.

“If he hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t be where I am now,” Sam said.

At the time, Sam was transferred to another part of the UK to temporary accommodation, where he connected with a charity called Talent Tap, who focus on internships and work experience.

Through this, Sam was able to undertake an internship at the Tony Blair Institute, where he was able to meet Sir Tony – which he said was “something out of a dream”.

With further support from an organisation called Refugee Education UK, Sam was given a chance to apply for a place at the University of Warwick – having to write an essay and undertake an interview.

At the time, he struggled to access WiFi and a laptop, with a charity called Screen Share UK providing him with support.

Sam said ‘everything opened up’ for him when he got to university (Collect/PA Real Life)

He was able to secure a place to study a three-year course for politics and international studies, starting in September 2023, aiming to focus on international development in the future.

“It just shows that if there is support available, asylum seekers have the same chance as everyone else, they can do the same thing as everyone else,” he said.

Sam volunteers with different charities to advocate for refugees and he was named on The Big Issue ’s 100 Changemakers of 2024 List.

“One of the amazing things here in the UK, the charities that supported me, for example Refugee Education UK, I’m now part of their youth advocacy groups to advocate for access to education,” he said.

Sam also volunteers with Warwick Student Action for Refugees, where he is able to teach English to asylum seekers as well as working with other universities and organisations to create open days for refugees.

“When I went to (go) back as a teacher to the same hotel where I stayed as an asylum seeker, they were amazed to see me and when I told them my story, they were inspired.

“Some even applied to universities and a few managed to get a place.”

Sam added: “I think everyone deserves a second chance, what really is important is that everyone has a different life story, everyone has been through a lot.

“No one wants to be a refugee, I was ashamed of being a refugee when I came here to the UK, but it’s not something people are born with, this is a condition people are forced into.

“What we can do is try to support them to go onto the next part of their lives.”

The shepherd of the sea guiding small boats home to safety in South Africa

In the isolated village of Hondeklip Bay, Patrick Rulph is the lone voice on the radio bringing fishers back to shore.

Patrick Rulph

Hondeklip Bay, South Africa – Before day breaks on a cloudy morning in Hondeklip Bay, a small fishing village in South Africa’s semi-arid Namaqualand region, Patrick Rulph rushes out of his front door in track pants, a loose-fitting hoodie and a dark cap.

The 61-year-old moves with urgency as he makes his way down the 200-metre-long dirt road to the beach, hoping to catch the fishers before they head to sea.

From the cape: south africa’s bo-kaap, the surfer chef behind south africa’s first fine dining halal restaurant, in search of ramadan with south africa’s men who sight the moon.

“They don’t go to sea at set times, and I want to see exactly how many fishers are out,” says Rulph, with a knowing smile that reflects the pride he takes in his work monitoring and guiding the small boats that go out to sea.

On the shore, bags holding fishing gear and lunches sit at the high watermark on the sand. The fishers try and warm themselves in pockets of defiant sunlight while their fellow crew members arrive one by one.

Ruins of the old fish canning factory and the remains of a jetty that was destroyed by a storm years ago are evidence of a once-booming fishing industry that employed nearly anyone in the village.

Across the road from the ruins, five orange-coloured boats lie in front of a two-storey, weather-worn building, with a sign that reads: “Hondeklip Bay Small Vessel Safety Monitoring Center”, or VMS, where Rulph spends most of his days.

The VMS has two rooms: a first-floor office that contains the monitoring and communication equipment he uses and a small room on the ground floor, which houses orange electronic devices called locators that help track vessels out at sea. Rulph grabs a few locators from the room and hurries back down to the various fishing crews on the beach, handing them out and making meticulous notes in a pocketbook he carries with him.

He makes sure all the boats that leave in the morning return, and when necessary, he guides them home using the Small Vessel Monitoring System, which uses mapping software to track the locators.

Patrick Rulph

As the only person working at the safety centre, Rulph has become indispensable to the small-scale fishers of Hondeklip Bay. Even after a loss of funding meant he stopped being paid to do the job this year, he has continued out of a strong sense of duty to the community.

At the shore, the crews of two or three men assemble, before rowing out to their anchored ski-boats on worn but sound dinghies. After boarding, they fire up their outboard motors and make their way out to sea, skipping on the incoming waves as they leave the harbour mouth one by one.

Hondeklip Bay has a population of about 540 people, according to the latest census in 2022. Rulph estimates that the size of the community is much larger, based on information he has seen at the local clinic, but he maintains that the community remains very close-knit.

Gainful employment is hard to come by. While some residents work for companies that reprocess overburden from diamond mines, most others work for low-paying municipal projects.

Daniel Ruyter, one of the members of the Hondeklip Bay Small-Scale Fishing Cooperative, says that despite only having 27 members, the co-op provides some form of income to 90-100 people. At the height of the annual snoek fishing season, over the Easter period, travelling fishers from all over the Western Cape visit Hondeklip Bay “chasing the snoek”. During their stay, they rent accommodation from community members and many more are given odd jobs such as cleaning fish.

Hondeklip Bay

Hondeklip Bay was established in the mid-1800s to transport copper ore by sea from its natural harbour to other towns in the Northern Cape. Rulph’s grandparents moved there in the early 1900s to work in the commercial fishing industry. His father was a fisherman and his mother worked in the Namaqua Canning Company’s fish factory.

When Rulph grew up during apartheid, he was classified as “coloured”. The racial discrimination was hard to miss, he recalls. While white residents had electricity and piped water in their homes, non-white residents could only collect drinking water from a reservoir in the village on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they could only access brackish water.

“My friends and I saw it as a chance to earn pocket money. We delivered buckets of water for our neighbours, and they would give us a few cents that we would use to buy sweets and chocolates,” he laughs.

Hondeklip Bay, South Africa

Conditions improved after Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress was voted into power in 1994, with piped water as well as electricity reaching all residents by 1996. Yet, 30 years later, Hondeklip Bay still has no grocery store, petrol station or high school, and the village remains accessible by gravel roads that stretch through past decommissioned diamond mines for tens of kilometres.

Rulph decided to quit high school when he was 16 to start working. After spending one season at the same canning factory as his mother, he began working for diamond companies, first De Beers and then the Trans Hex Group, when he was retrenched after 20 years. Due to the decline in the diamond industry and the collapse of the commercial fishing industry at home, he sought employment in Cape Town but returned after two years.

Fortunately, the Hondeklip Bay VMS and the monitoring system were donated to the village by the Namaqua District Municipality in 2014 and a post was advertised. Rulph got the job.

In the VMS office, which looks out over the ruins of the canning factory, he has a portable short-range radio, a fixed long-range radio, and two screens on which he can see satellite images of as much of the coastline as he wants to see along with the locations of each of the boats carrying the orange devices.

On days when the coastline is covered in dense fog, Rulph has to keep his eyes on his screens, making sure that all the boats are together. At the start, it was very stressful, as the fog tends to interfere with the satellite imagery, but he has since learned to deal with the quirks of the system.

Fishing boats

Rulph recalls one very misty day that could have ended in a disaster. An old fisher went to sea with a young crew member, and when they decided to head home, it was so misty that they ended up arguing about where they were. The young crew member won the argument and thinking they were north of Hondeklip Bay, they headed south. After a while, the old fisher recognised a set of rocks along the shore and realised that they had gone too far south. They had nearly run out of fuel so they headed out into water that was deep enough for them to safely drop anchor and waited for the fog to clear.

Meanwhile, the other fishers that were out with them assuming they had made it home safely were surprised to find them not there. Members of the community built a huge bonfire on the beach hoping that the fishers would see the light from the sea and find their way home.

“I contacted the police and sent two boats with tracking devices out to go and look for them. When the mist cleared at about 11:30pm the old fisher saw that the boats were looking for them, but they didn’t have any way of drawing attention to themselves,” said Rulph.

When the “lost” fishers saw that the rescue boats were heading back home, they decided to row back to Hondeklip Bay.

“They reached the harbour mouth at about 4:30am, they fired up the motor and made it safely to shore. The community was still on the beach when they returned,” says Rulph, with a sense of delayed relief that the worst outcome was avoided.

Reflecting on that situation, Rulph says: “I realised that when the fishers are all at sea together, if a boat leaves, they just assume that it made it safely home, but that isn’t always the case. For that reason, I make sure that I know exactly how many boats go out every morning.”

‘We are making do’

In the decade that Rulph has worked at the safety centre, there have been no instances of fishers drowning at sea in Hondeklip Bay, a statistic he is simultaneously thankful for and proud of.

The Namakwa District Municipality paid Rulph’s salary through an annually renewed contract. But in 2024, his contract was not renewed because of a lack of funds. There is some talk of third parties attempting to secure funding for his position, but there are no concrete plans as yet, he says.

Patrick Rulph

At home, Rulph is the sole breadwinner in his household. His wife and two daughters depend on his state pension. Yet, with the optimism that reveals a deep acknowledgement of the resourcefulness of his community, he says: “We aren’t hungry, we aren’t cold. We are making do.”

And even without a salary, over the last few months, he has continued to perform the role he was once paid to do, in service of the community he has been a part of for six decades.

“Patrick’s work is important. He does it well. We don’t have to ask him to do it, or look for him, he’s always ready,” says Daniel Ruyter, who has known Rulph nearly all his life and has been his friend for decades.

Ruyter has been fishing for over 50 years and knows the surrounding coastline better than almost anyone. Yet he says that even he has been in situations where, due to the thick fog, he got lost while trying to make his way home, instead ending up in a different bay.

“We don’t all have GPS systems. And without the radios, our only means of communication from the sea is our mobile phones. If something out there happens you have to hope that you can access the network,” he said.

Indicating the value of Rulph’s dependability and the value of his work, Ruyter says: “Now we have radios, and we know that if we need help, Patrick will be ready to help us.”

Rulph’s service-oriented approach extends beyond just his profession, and his neighbours say it’s something that comes naturally to him. Ruyter says that when catches are good during the snoek season, Rulph goes around to the fishers asking them to donate some fish to poorer families in the community, before distributing the donations himself.

Patrick Rulph

It’s the same compassion to help those in need that guides his tireless unpaid work at the VMS.

“I understand the risks and the dangers of going to sea,” Rulph says in a lowered voice that conveys the seriousness with which he views his work. “Tomorrow someone could drown just because they didn’t have a locator and there was no one to guide them in. It would be a life that could have been saved.”

Fishing is the only gainful employment in the village, he says, and there are no other vocational opportunities for young men other than to become fishermen.

“My son is also a fisherman. Just as I care about my son, there are other parents that feel the same way about their children,” Rulph adds.

For as long as he is able, he is committed to continuing to shepherd Hondeklip Bay’s fishers home, making sure none get left behind.

“I believe if I bless others, then I will be blessed as well,” he says with a satisfied smile.
