Yacht Review: Morris Yachts M52

' data-srcset=

Ever since Morris Yachts’ introduction of the Sparkman & Stephens-designed M29, the iconic Maine builder has continued to develop and refine the series of these classically beautiful yachts. The stable has grown to include the M36, M42 and M46, and has been even further enhanced with the introduction of the M29x, M36x and M42x as high-performance variants. What seems to have been lacking in the lineup was the larger yacht that could match the series’ stunning classic looks and exceptional performance with long-distance coastal performance.

Morris responded to the call a few years ago with their first M52, and today Hull No. 3, Windsock is turning heads and winning races wherever she sails.

Like her smaller sisters, Windsock has a sweeping sheerline, elegant overhangs and a low squared-off cabin with a classic butterfly hatch. The yacht’s teak side decks are wide with removable lifeline stanchions.

The low-profile deckhouse is aesthetic, functional for forward visibility, and enhances the yacht’s classic looks. The cabin trunk and other surfaces that would typically be left to gel coat are all clad in 1/4-inch teak for the look and feel of a wooden boat that belies the hull topsides structure of a very modern vessel. Highly varnished teak toe rails, trim and cockpit coaming further enhance the look.

Windsock is set up to be sailed shorthanded and is as responsive as the smaller boats in the M-series line. Its high-aspect spade rudder and bulb fin keel offer great upwind performance as well as fun, responsive steering.

For simplicity of operation, the tall mast has an in-boom furling mainsail system from Offshore and a self-tacking fractional jib. A Holmatro boom vang also serves to automatically position the boom at the appropriate angle for jam-free furling.

A large cockpit, wide coamings and custom grab rails on the housetop lend a traditional look.

Courtesy Morris Yachts

As with all of the M series, the M52 has clean decks. All sail control lines are led below deck for ease of handling in the large and secure cockpit.

Below, Windsock is beautifully finished in all butternut, a diversion from the more traditional, white-painted, Herreshoff-style raised panels found on Hulls No. 1 and 2. The interior design is attractive and elegant from the hand of naval architect Ted Fontaine, whose own yachts are noted for their luxurious interiors and attention to detail.

Windsock’s accommodation plan calls for a two-cabin arrangement with a forward master stateroom equipped with a centerline queen berth, full-height hanging locker and bureau, and en suite head and shower.

There is an aft cabin to port with an adjacent day head that also serves well for foul weather gear. The galley is to starboard and features a ceramic cooktop and four-drawer Frigo reefer/freezer system. Aft of the galley is a spacious pilot berth that, when unoccupied, makes for great storage.

The saloon itself is spacious, airy and well lit thanks to the butterfly hatch above. Long, narrow side windows complement the lighting from above. There is a portside saloon settee that is convertible to a sea berth with storage behind and below and a nav station just aft. To starboard, an L-shaped settee wraps around a large expandable dining table for comfortable entertaining.

Morris Yachts has long had a reputation as a builder that tries to get it right. The M52 has many of the attributes of its smaller relatives in the M-series line, but with the longer legs of a larger boat, allowing for long-distance coastal cruising.

Manufacturer Provided Description

Designed by the architects Van Peteghem and Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) in association with the Lagoon R&D department, the Lagoon 620 is an innovative solution to the needs of today's cruising yachtsman : Strength, comfort, performance and large choice of layouts. The 2012 version of the Lagoon 620, with interiors designed by Nauta, makes her an even more luxurious and comfortable yacht.

In the dining room, the settees have been entirely redesigned, as well as the ceiling, enabling more effective indirect lighting, and it now includes the option of installing adjustable blinds on all the wide vertical windows.

On the starboard side, the master suite has also been substantially modified, with a washroom now placed aft on either side of the cockpit access stairs, making room for a large cupboard space in the bedroom. The forward starboard cabin, now a real V.I.P. suite, also benefits from this change due to the volume freed up by the repositioning of the master washroom. Whether in its 4, 5 or 6 cabin version, the Lagoon 620 is now offered with new Ambiances created by Nauta for the "large" Lagoons: complete interior layout packages elegantly incorporating wood finish, upholstery, inner liners, and more…

50th Anniversary Logo

  • Updated: October 4, 2007

The hand of Maytag agitated the waters off Bass Harbor, Maine, as we gingerly made our way from the dock at Morris Yachts to hull number two of the 52 raised-saloon cruising sloop Far Out. A seamless mantle of cloud wore the color of pewter, which we saw reflected off the dancing water. A tinge of green, the one so popular with rocks at low tide, tinted the water a color that reminded me of UFL (unidentified flowing liquid) common to the gutters of Manhattan. The wind blew 15 to 20 knots, scattering the occasional raindrops like bits of chaff at harvest time. We were going to have a grand sail.

This was June, Down East on Mount Desert Island, and I loved it. The conditions were tailor-made for sea trials aboard a cruising boat designed and built for fast passagemaking offshore.

Chuck Paine, who has been designing boats for Morris since dirt was invented, derived the 52 from a 50 he drew nearly 10 years ago. Taking from that gene pool is not a bad thing, because the 50 was a fast and seakindly cruiser. Paine extended the sailing length by adding to the stern. He also added a bit of height to the topsides to increase the interior volume and headroom. Then, to give the new 52 a current Morris identity, Paine designed a totally new deck and house. The result is a handsome, conservative yacht that should stand the test of time and hold a healthy resale value.

“Conservative is also an apt description for the Morris 52 below the waterline. Paine struck a fine compromise among the conflicting criteria that go into the bottom of any sailing yacht. Every designer has to juggle beam, cross-sectional shape (referred to as sections or as a body plan), waterlines and buttocks to get the handling characteristics he wants. Beam at DWL on the 52 is moderate by the standards of offshore racing boats, but is greater than was common, say, 10 years ago in cruising boats. The greater the beam, the more form stability the hull has.

A relatively hard turn at the bilges also enhances form stability, up to a certain angle of heel, at which point many other factors enter the picture. The Vendee Globe boats are a perfect example of form stability in the extreme. The amidships sections of Paine’s recent hulls are a compressed semicircle, as though someone pulled each end of a semicircle and caused its bottom to rise off the baseline. In addition to aiding form stability, sections of this shape give the yacht fair waterlines when she heels. Fair waterlines generally prevent evil steering characteristics throughout the range of heeling angles.

Sailing yachts need balanced ends to perform well in the greatest variety of conditions. The best designers seem to have a nearly supernatural ability to get this correct, and most of them will tell you that science takes them only so far. Paine is convinced that hollow in the waterlines at the bow improves speed and handling traits, so the 52 has hollow sections forward-not extreme, but definitely noticeable. A hollow entry lets the bow slice through the water to ease the initial impact of the waves. The increase in buoyancy as the hull broadens toward maximum beam at DWL gently lifts the bow over the body of each wave.

Back aft, a good cruising yacht wants enough bearing to support a crowd in the cockpit, stuff in the lazarettes and, in this yacht, the master stateroom. A generous surfing area is another benefit of carrying aft a large percentage of the yacht’s maximum beam. Boats of this type have a “powerful stern, according to the jargon of the sailing game.

For a cruising yacht, the Morris 52 has a shallow canoe body, though not as shallow as the builder’s racier models. Combined with light weight, the shallow hull encourages a sailing yacht to surf on the face of waves and to generally exceed the old-fashioned 1.34 speed/length ratio. If the designer can make the yacht stable enough to stand up under a large rig, he’ll achieve sail area/wetted-surface and sail area/displacement ratios that permit high top speeds with exceptional light-air performance. Paine found a reasonable compromise over the entire range. I wouldn’t toss the auxiliary, but I’ll wager the owner won’t have to use it much if he doesn’t want to.

Aboard Far Out, the crew prepared to cast away the mooring pennant while I went below to look around. I felt as though I were violating consecrated territory as I left wet footprints on the companionway stairs. The accommodations of this 52 positively glow with glossy varnish. The term “overdone seemed an appropriate description from my point of view, but the owners love it.

Morris does the best nonslip surface on its companionway stairs. Tom Morris said it’s simply white sand set in the normal varnish. It functioned as it should under my wet sea boots. The varnished teak-and-pear cabin sole, however, rejected my wet boots as though they were incompatible organs. A nonslip surface on the cabin soles may not be pretty, but neither are cuts and bruises on the bodies of crew members who’ve skated into the furniture. The strategically placed handrails ought to help.

Every Morris yacht is custom, so the owner has a nearly unlimited choice of arrangement plans. Far Out’s arrangement plan is straightforward and useful. The owners wisely chose to have the two large staterooms at opposite ends of the boat, separated by the common area. This level of privacy aboard a small yacht promotes peace and good times. Although a husband and wife easily manage Far Out, they could sail with a crew of two professionals, accommodated in the guest cabin on the port side opposite the galley. These berths are great for off-watch crew to sleep during long passages. If this were my boat, I’d have requested a work/utility room in place of the over/under guest cabin. This would let me close off the galley at its after end and place the passageway to and from the master stateroom on the port side.

I made my way topside when I felt Far Out accelerate under auxiliary power. Although the engine is under the sink in the galley, careful attention to sound attenuation makes its presence less than annoying for occupants of the saloon.

After we cleared the mooring field, we headed into the wind and hoisted the main to the first reef point. We fell off a bit on starboard tack and unrolled the 100-percent foretriangle. This small jib hoists to the masthead buy doesn’t overlap the main. Although a crew member has to handle the jib sheet during tacks and jibes, careful timing precludes the need for the primary winches.

Far Out has the taller of two rigs offered with the 52. The rig of hull number one was less than 65 feet above DWL so it could clear the fixed bridges on the Intracoastal Waterway. The mast aboard Far Out stretches to 67 feet above DWL. Although the difference in sail area between the two rigs isn’t great, it’s at the top where the breeze is often stronger than it is at deck level. This seems to be especially true in light air.

We didn’t have to think about light air during my sea trial. Under reefed main and full jib, Far Out accelerated in a flash to her theoretical hull speed of 9 knots at about 30 degrees to the apparent wind. Although we didn’t encounter any waves long enough for surfing, the 52 readily exceeded 9 knots close reaching down the face of the existing waves.

On all points of sail, the steering remained accurate and easy, providing all the tactile sensation a good unassisted system should. I always knew what the rudder was doing. Every one of Paine’s designs I’ve sailed balances so well you’d think an autopilot was an extravagance. This was true of Far Out. On any point above a beam reach, I could leave the helm unattended for a minute or more before she began to creep slowly into the wind. If I had to endure a hard chance, I’d want my boat to behave as well as this Morris 52.

Exceptional workmanship in the laminate and the joinerwork, comfort and safety under way, and timeless good looks make Morris yachts a good value for the long term. Far Out ought to please her owners for many years to come.

The vessel was originally designed and commissioned for build in 2003 by Michael Farrington and Dorit Zeevi-Farrington, who co-founded the Manhattan Steamboat Company following the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. Michael, a professional captain in NY Harbor with a Masters in Marine Science, worked as a marine scientist before later working as a forensic scientist for NYC’s Chief Medical Examiner immediately after 9/11, where he was part of the Trade Center Disaster DNA analysis team. Dorit was born in Israel and became an Israeli Defense Forces officer before moving to New York to earn her M.B.A. in Finance & International Business and ultimately rising to the ranks of First Vice President of a successful New York equities trading firm, logging long hours on Wall Street. (Manhattan Steam Boat Company, n.d.)

Then in 2001 everything changed. The Farrington’s had a baby girl. Within a year of returning from maternity leave, Dorit took voluntary lay-off, opting out of the demanding pace of Wall Street and set her sights on building a family business instead. The Farrington’s invested Dorit’s severance check to build a custom-designed 62-foot luxury yacht to host private events and charter cruises around New York Harbor, christening the vessel Noa Danielle . (Vanderkan, 2005)

Built in 2004, the designs of L.E. Geary, a renowned Naval Architect of the 1920’s, served as inspiration for Noa Danielle, with some specific modifications to the pilothouse and forward bulwarks similar to that of the turn-of-the-century passenger-carry steamboats that traversed the waters of New York Harbor. The interior was a nod to the Roaring Twenties, with a Great Gatsby-inspired design, perfect for intimate gatherings. (Manhattan Steam Boat Company, n.d.)

Manhattan Steamboat Company owned and operated Noa Danielle until 2012, serving multiple ports of call in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, offering private charter tours, Statute of Liberty cruises, hosting elegant gatherings, celebrations, and corporate and non-profit events. (Manhattan Steam Boat Company, n.d.)

In 2012, Johnny Morris, noted conservationist and founder of Bass Pro Shops and Big Cedar Lodge, purchased Noa Danielle , to offer Big Cedar Lodge guests a unique way to experience the beauty of the Ozarks by water. The remarkable vessel was renamed Lady Liberty as a tribute to her prior service as a Statute of Liberty tour yacht, where guests from around the globe leisurely cruised the New York Harbor while learning, discussing, and reflecting upon our country’s history and the freedoms symbolized by the Statute of Liberty.

Lady Liberty officially embarked on her journey to the Ozarks from the New York Harbor at Chelsea Piers at 5:30am on May 28, 2012. The vessel sailed down the east coast to Maryland and was then trailered for the remainder of the trip west. The top deck was removed for transport and later reassembled upon arrival in Missouri.  The carpets were removed, and stunning teak wood flooring was installed throughout.

After renovations, Lady Liberty finally settled in at Bent Hook Marina, under the careful stewardship of of First Captain Zeke, who is still captaining Lady Liberty today, and Second Captain Danny, who retired just a few years ago. Cruise bookings opened to Big Cedar Lodge guests in 2014.

From fine dining experiences to brunch and day cruises, the experienced captains and crew offer more than 200 cruise options each year. Maximum guest capacity is only 36, ensuring an intimate and relaxing experience for everyone on board. Cruises are all family friendly with menu options available for children.

Each cruise features live entertainment from local artists Gidean Dunn and Stephanie Barney, who perform almost exclusively for Lady Liberty guests.  Guests are welcomed aboard at the dock by the captain and first mate.  Before departing, the captain will introduce the crew, meal, and route plan.

There are two cruise routes, each with one and one-half hours of cruising time. The primary route sails north past Big Cedar Lodge, State Park Marina, the Showboat Branson Belle, to Table Rock Lake Dam, before turning back.  The southern route sails across the Arkansas state line, past miles of untouched shorelines, offering guests the chance to spot Table Rock Lake’s legendary mountain goat Crisco before turning back.

During the cruise, the captain keeps guests entertained with interesting facts, identifies points of interest along the way, and watches the horizon for eagles and other wildlife.  For sunset cruises, the crew are always ready to assist guests to capture the perfect sunset photos!

On cool or wet weather days, Lady Liberty crew encapsulates the upper dining and lower deck spaces to ensure a warm and dry boating experience while still providing beautiful views of Table Rock Lake! Unforgettable firework cruises are offered Memorial Day weekend, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekend.   Big Cedar Lodge is proud to celebrate ten years of luxury yachting on Table Rock Lake and welcomes guests who set sail on this unforgettable yachting experience, to sit back, relax, enjoy delicious food, and take in the unforgettable views of Table Rock Lake. COMMENTS

  1. Morris 62

Providing this much interior volume in a 62-foot yacht requires careful design. The compromises begin with the fast passages, which demand a relatively shallow hull of moderate prismatic coefficient-meaning Paine has drawn out the volume below the waterline. The entry is fine, but not overly so, and forms a narrow U-shape in the first few stations.
