CRN’s Cloud 9 Is Yours to Charter

CRN's Cloud 9 superyacht

Chartering Cloud 9 could induce, as its name suggests, a long-term state of bliss. While “something for everyone” is a cliché used to market most charter vessels, this graceful but voluminous yacht from CRN delivers on the promise with its abundance of and s.

For instance, the spa on the 245-foot yacht has a massage area, a hair salon, and a foldout balcony so guests getting a haircut or rubdown can sip a posttreatment Prosecco while savoring the view. The beach club’s espresso bar is a chic, laid-back sit-down area inside the transom—and the long swim platform just behind it provides snorkeling and scuba opportunities. Cloud 9 ’s 2,600-gallon glass-bottom pool sits between a Jacuzzi and an outdoor cinema. And among the yacht’s navy of water toys are a 30-foot Novurania Chase 31 tender, a MasterCraft X20 competition ski boat, a sailing catamaran, and five Jet Skis.

The Italian architectural firm Zuccon International packed these many bonuses into an elegant profile, avoiding the behemoth look—despite Cloud 9 ’s considerable length—by layering the yacht’s six decks. The foredeck works as a private gathering area and alfresco dining room under a tent designed for protection against wind and sun. Back near the pool, Zuccon worked closely with Andrew Winch, the designer of Cloud 9 ’s interior and exterior guest areas, for a seamless transition to the interior. The pool area is outfitted with a similar feel as the saloon, including sofas with deep cushions. The sense of being in an oasis of relaxation, inside and out, is reinforced at every turn, with calming choices in furniture, lighting, and the entertainment system.

Working with an area equaling several football fields, Winch created an informal but refined interior. Brushed Douglas fir and limed oak were his team’s woods of choice, but the designers customized each area by interspersing 50 other materials throughout the yacht. The artwork is modern but also classic, with British artist Fenella Elms’s porcelain cloudscape on the walls defining the saloon area. The owners decided to do without a formal dining area, so the designers created a circular entrance on the upper deck with a table at its center, where guests have the choice of dining with the transparent glass door closed or open to the elements.

Cloud 9 has eight staterooms—a master, a VIP suite, and six doubles (plus two cabins for assistants)—but it limits charters to 12 guests. The master suite on the owner’s deck measures an otherworldly 4,500 square feet and has access to a private terrace on the foredeck.

Despite its cavernous spaces and overall size, Cloud 9 is at heart an intimate family yacht that pays homage to formality without being imprisoned by it. It could be the coolest charter yacht in the fleet this year.

Watering Hole

Cloud 9’s glass-bottom pool is the yacht’s natural gathering point, with a Jacuzzi and memory-foam sofas nearby to promote relaxation. The outdoor cinema (there’s a second one in the main saloon for rainy days) uses 97-inch Stewart screens and 4K video projectors. Revolution Acoustics’ SSP6 “multi-ducers” provide surround sound around the pool. These nonspeakers actually use the aluminum panels near the pool to transmit sound. “The surface becomes a full-range speaker, creating a 3-D audio effect,” says Maurizio Minossi, technical director at Videoworks. “It turned out to be a great listening area and, with no speakers, had zero impact on the look of the yacht.”

The list of toys aboard Cloud 9 is almost unheard of, even for a yacht of its size. The selection includes a 30-foot Novurania rigid inflatable as a chase boat or landing craft, a MasterCraft X20 competition ski boat, a sailing catamaran, five stand-up and sit-down personal watercraft, diving gear, fishing gear, and a 40-foot inflatable slide. There’s also a drone to record all the maritime adventures.

Masterful Suite

The palatial master suite has just about everything anyone needs, including paired bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a bedroom surrounded by windows that offer private panoramic water views. Master-suite guests also have access to a private deck just in front, a nice little space where they can sip morning cappuccinos.

Glassed-In Gym

The glassed walls and mirrors of the gym provide brilliant waterside views, but the area is also designed for serious workouts. There are spin bikes (which can be brought up to the foredeck), a rowing machine, a treadmill, and even a Technogym kinesis machine. The area can also convert to a schoolroom when the gym is not in use.

Advanced Entertainment System

Though most of its cables and computers are hidden behind bulkheads, Cloud 9’s entertainment center is one of the most advanced ever on a yacht. “The system and servers are as extensive as any modern office building,” says Minossi, whose firm installed the system during the 3-year build. “The owner dedicated a budget so we could install a Cisco network and include the best audiovisual equipment from Yamaha, Sony, and Panasonic.” The independent entertainment zones (think saloon, staterooms, and aft exterior area) can be controlled individually by iPad, including accessing the yacht’s extensive library of music and movies. Surfing the web is also seamless. “Our goal is to design the system as if someone is at home,” says Minossi, “even when they are many miles offshore.”

Ferretti Group’s mega-yacht arm, CRN , recently debuted its second largest build ever, Cloud 9 , at the 2017 Monaco Yacht Show, held last fall. Even among the massive and glittering vessels at the world’s premiere mega yacht event, Cloud 9 managed to stand out. I was lucky enough to get aboard for a tour, and the build did not disappoint.

One of the on board highlights for me was the yacht’s spa with a full hair salon (she counts a stylist among her crew) and a foldout terrace where the massage table lives. I can imagine few things more relaxing than being moored in some isolated tropical paradise and getting an open-air massage while being caressed by warm island breezes.

Her spacious interior, which was designed in conjunction with Winch Design, has nearly 11,000 square feet of space, and she can sleep 16 guests (12 when chartering, of course) and has a full crew of 22.

The yacht’s exterior lines, which were done by Zuccon International Project, manage to remain sleek despite the boat’s imposing 4,400,000-pound displacement weight.

The mega yacht is powered by a pair of 2,682 hp Caterpillar 3516C engines that give her a top speed of 16 knots, a 12-knot cruise and a 6,000-nautical-mile range that can get her from Los Angeles to Fiji with fuel to spare.

Incredible Photos From CRN’s Colourful Launch Of Yacht CLOUD 9

who owns cloud 9 superyacht

A cold Saturday January 21st saw the highly anticipated launch of new yacht Cloud 9 at the CRN shipyard in Ancona, Italy. This collaboration between Italian duo CRN and Zuccon International project was supported by none-other than Winch Designs, who were also responsible for interiors onboard the owner’s previous yacht named Cloud 9 – a 60m CMN.

The yacht Cloud 9 launch party was quite the ceremony. Yachtspotters and CRN staff in their hundreds came to watch the beautiful superyacht slide backwards into the water amongst cheers from the crowd. You can watch the official video below, complete with slow-motion champagne smash:

A Huge Achievement

Cloud 9 (ex CRN hull 131) is a huge achievement for all at CRN and for the new owner, commissioning his second new-build superyacht.

Alberto Galassi, CRN’s Chairman and CEO of the Ferretti Group, said:

“We are really thrilled to have been involved in the construction of this extraordinary yacht which was a new and exciting challenge for CRN. This incredible 74 metre vessel will reinforce CRN’s expertise and varied range in working with a completely new concept to fulfil an owner’s vision. The result is a cutting-edge yacht that perfectly combines state-of-the-art technology, astonishing design and the best CRN features.”

The 60m yacht Cloud 9 was sold and renamed Ice Angel signalling that it now belongs to the owner of a 55m Heesen by the same name- now also seen for sale.

Meanwhile, the launch of the new Cloud 9 leaves space for the latest Zuccon International Project 79m yacht being constructed at CRN to be moved into the finishing shed. When launched, this will beat Cloud 9 into second place in terms of the longest CRN superyachts in the fleet.

Andrew Winch of Winch Design comments:

“It has been a great pleasure to work with Zuccon, I have always admired Mr Zuccon’s exterior designs and to partner with him and CRN for this project has been very exciting. We have previously designed a 60 metre motor yacht for these clients with whom I have a very close friendship which makes this project particularly enjoyable. It is a pleasure to work with them again and I am appreciative of their trust and confidence.”

Cloud 9: Let’s Take A Closer Look

' src=

In the ninth month of the year, let’s take a close look at the Super Yacht ‘Cloud 9’.

The phrase “cloud nine” evokes a feeling of pure joy and happiness, and it’s the perfect name for a superyacht designed for family relaxation. Cloud Nine is a remarkable achievement, especially considering its origins.

When the original client for the 74-meter hull withdrew, CRN found itself in a difficult situation. But a new owner emerged, with his own design and build teams, and together they transformed CRN’s second largest yacht into a stylish and comfortable cruiser.

The hunt for a new superyacht

Captain Colin Boyle was sailing his yacht Cloud 9 in Singapore when he received a phone call from his owner. It was January 2014, and the owner had a proposition: Fly to Rome at 1 a.m. to look at a potential new superyacht.

The owner was looking to build a larger yacht, and Burgess, the broker who had represented him on the previous build, knew of an opportunity. CRN project 131 was a 74-meter yacht already well underway, but the original client had withdrawn.

The hull and superstructure were complete, and the major machinery was installed. The yacht had similar lines to the award-winning Azteca and the yard’s flagship, Chopi Chopi.

Bernardo Zuccon of Zuccon International Project saw it as an opportunity to “rewrite the story.” The new owner had three months to replan and redraw the yacht, and the team worked tirelessly to make his vision a reality.

The result is a superyacht that is both timeless and approachable. The exterior styling is mature and sophisticated, focusing on human comfort. The stern platform features a massive fold-down door that creates a sprawling beach club, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and entertaining guests.

Cloud 9 Plus: A superyacht beach house with a twist

One of the highlights of Cloud 9 is its massive recreation area on the main aft deck. The centrepiece of this area is a 10,000-liter spa pool with a glass bottom, flanked by stairs on either side. The owners have nicknamed their new yacht “Cloud 9 Plus,” and it’s easy to see why.

Winch Design has used sand tones, vibrant blues, and a treasure trove of decorative shells, corals, and agates to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Brushed Douglas fir and limed oak add to the beach house feel, while the generous dimensions and comfortable spaces make it the perfect place to entertain guests or simply relax and enjoy the luxury of your surroundings.

Here is a summary of the main features of this fantastic superyacht:

  • 74-meter length
  • 2,218 gross tonnes
  • Six cabins (including two staff cabins finished as guest cabins)
  • Two cinemas
  • Hair salon/massage room
  • Superyacht gym
  • Espresso bar
  • Outdoor dining area
  • Large circular wooden tables that can be expanded or removed
  • Interior and exterior spaces designed to merge indoor and outdoor living
  • More focus was put on the exterior spaces of the boat, including the cockpit on the main deck and the bow area
  • Heavy layered doors to the cabins with soundproofing from specialist Cergol Engineering
  • Owners’ deck with magnificent suite, wraparound windows, private terrace, and helideck (converted to grand entertaining platform)
  • Fire- and soundproof passageway through the engine room’s top level to connect the beach club, port tender garage, and guest arrival lobby

A family-friendly vibe was a priority

Cloud 9’s owners wanted a superyacht with a casual, family-friendly vibe, so they eschewed a traditional dining area in favour of a spacious, open-plan main saloon.

The heart of the saloon is a vast, 1.5-meter-deep sofa perfect for watching movies, lounging by the pool, or simply relaxing with family and friends. The overall atmosphere is sunny and inviting, with a 3D porcelain panel “cloud” adding movement and depth to the central bulkhead.

In addition to its spacious main saloon, Cloud 9 also features two cinemas, a hair salon/massage room, and a superyacht gym. The owner’s deck is a sprawling 400 square meters, with its own outdoor cinema and plenty of space to relax and entertain guests.

who owns cloud 9 superyacht

The guest cabins are located on the main deck, and each has a unique nameplate engraved with the name of a Star Wars character, which can be removed if the guests are not fans of the films.

The owner’s deck is a highlight of the yacht, with a magnificent suite with wraparound windows looking onto a private terrace and helicopter deck below. The owners decided to turn the helipad into a grand entertaining platform, which has become a favourite spot for dining al fresco and karaoke.

In summary, Cloud 9 is a superyacht that seamlessly combines luxury, comfort, and functionality, which genuinely reflects the wishes of her owners.

By Oliver Pearson   17 May 2017

Following her colorful launch in January, the 74m/243ft motor yacht ‘Cloud 9’ was this week delivered to her owner ahead of her debut charter season in the Mediterranean .

Following the successful completion of her final sea trials, it has been announced that Cloud 9 has now been delivered to her experienced owner.

Unquestionably one of the most anticipated superyacht deliveries of the year, Cloud 9 is particularly significant for charter guests keen to experience a brand new motor yacht .

Specifically, the CRN superyacht showcases the characteristic excellence of the Italian shipyard, with a range of features and a layout optimising the possibilities for a vacation on the water.

who owns cloud 9 superyacht

No doubt the most obvious and remarkable advantage of superyacht Cloud 9 is her open-air beach club. Made possible by retractable doors on the aft, port, and starboard sides, the large space allows charter guests to effortlessly board and disembark from tenders, or simply soak up the sun by the water.

Elsewhere on the exterior, the private owner’s deck is certain to be a hit amongst principal charter guests, whilst the main deck aft provides an impressive alfresco dining area for the entire party to enjoy.

Elsewhere on the main deck is a 12 meter pool sure to attract the attention of every guest that steps on board.

Equipped with the most desirable features- and impeccably designed- superyacht CLOUD 9 is a superb addition to the charter fleet

The interior of Cloud 9 is every bit as impressive as her exterior, with Andrew Winch finishing the communal and guest spaces in a highly contemporary style to ensure a refreshing and comfortable charter experience.

The open plan main salon is sure to form the social centre of the superyacht, with the  dining table providing a more formal alternative to the alfresco arrangement.

Besides her large master cabin, Cloud 9 features an additional 7 cabins arranged around a flexible configuration to provide accommodation for up to 12 guests whilst away on a private yacht charter vacation .

CRN PRESENTS 74-METRE SUPERYACHT “CLOUD 9”

  • September 26, 2017

To be on cloud nine is a typical English idiom used to express a state of supreme elation and happiness. And “ Cloud 9 ” is the name chosen by the owner of the new beautiful 74-metre CRN Yachts’ superyacht , probably to express his own feeling of happiness.

CRN Yachts Cloud 9

Cloud 9 is, first of all, characterized by a streamlined profile and elegantly refined guest areas which allow her to stand out among all the other superyachts of the same category.

The yacht features an excellent balance between interior and exterior spaces, with impressive volume and a high degree of comfort.

More specifically, the qualities of the outside spaces find their highest expression in the private owner’s deck situated forward of the master suite and the beach club with extended platform at sea level. These exceptional open-air areas were all conceived to offer maximum scope for both al fresco enjoyment and entertainment, as specified by the owner.

Cloud 9 CRN Yachts

Cloud 9 can accommodates up to 16 guests across 8 cabins: a master suite, a VIP cabin and 6 double cabins. In addition, accommodation is provided for 26 crew and staff members .

The 5 decks are furnished with elegant colour schemes and an extensive use of oak wood in different guises, juxtaposed with mother-of-pearl elements.

The main deck houses a swimming pool lying athwartships on the aft deck . Indoors, the main saloon is the major proof of the boat’s elegance, enhanced by precious materials and refined furniture. Both flooring and walls are cladded with bleached oak wood.

The main deck also includes a spacious spa area, equipped with a massage table, en-suite bathroom and hair salon. Breath-taking views of the sea can be enjoyed from the fold-down balcony.

The lower deck includes one of the embarkation points. Guests are immediately welcomed by a foyer while an elevator connects the entrance with all the other Cloud 9′ levels.

Forward, there are the galley, the crew areas, the engine room and two garages which can comfortably accommodate two tenders and many water toys.

The upper deck hosts a wonderful open space filled with natural light. Both the saloon and the dining area are decorated with a mural depicting a peaceful sky scene which partially seems to reproduce a fresco of the beautiful Scrovegni Chapel.

CRN Yachts Cloud 9 zona dining

The private owner’s deck is the culmination of family relaxation. Just beyond the entrance, an amazing media room with a sofa and an a large TV offers a comfortable space where to enjoy a film or a TV show at night. The distinctive feature of this environment is the mixed white wool and sink carpet stretching all over the floor: an additional touch of elegance that makes the owner’s deck an exclusive truly attractive space.

The master suite is positioned in the bow section and decorated with dark resin back-lit feature lights . Of special mention is the bas-relief decoration on the wall made by a Veneto-based craftsman.

Finally, the Sun Deck is an area where guests can relax while reclining on the loungers or bathing in the jacuzzi. There’s even a water slide where the bravest guests can shoot down from a height of about 13 metres above sea level.

The Cloud 9 is powered by two Caterpillar 3516C-Chd 2000 kW 1600 rpm engines , which deliver a top speed of 16.5 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots.

The yacht will be chartering in the Caribbean next winter with weekly rates from $875,000 . The official presentation is scheduled to take place at Monaco Yacht Show (September 27th-30th), one among the most glamorous yachting events of the year. In the light of all her qualities, there is no doubt that Cloud 9 will be a superstar.

4 bodies found inside the Bayesian, Mike Lynch family yacht, amid search

Four bodies were recovered inside the Bayesian superyacht on Wednesday, more than two days after it sank off the coast of Italy , setting off an exhaustive search for six missing people, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch .

Two of the bodies discovered earlier on Wednesday were brought to shore. One body recovered was a heavily built man, Reuters reported.

Six of the ship's 22 passengers, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, went missing after the yacht plunged under the water just before 5 a.m. on Monday as a storm swept across the area. Americans are among the missing, officials have said.

The U.K.-registered yacht belonged to Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was also on board and was rescued. The tech tycoon was recently acquitted on fraud charges after a year under house arrest.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook, was found dead on Monday, according to the coast guard.

The rescue mission saw a diving team, helicopters and multiple coast guard ships deployed to search the water. Fifteen people were pulled from the water on Monday, and eight were hospitalized in stable condition.

A 'black swan event'? Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank

An investigation opened by local prosecutors into the cause of the disaster is ongoing. Experts have pointed to a water spout, a tornado over the water that can travel up to 120 mph, that formed during the storm, as well as the heavy weight of ship's mast, one of the largest in the world.

The 184-feet-long ship was made by Italian ship manufacturer Perini in 2008.

Lynch set off on the cruise late last month to celebrate his acquittal on fraud charges in the U.S. that marked a decade of legal challenges, the Associated Press reported .

One of his lawyers and a character witness for Lynch during the trial were also on board and vanished when the boat went down. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the four people found.

Here are the passengers who were declared missing.

Mike Lynch and Hannah Lynch

Mike Lynch, 59, is co-founder of Britain’s largest enterprise software, Autonomy, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, and founder of venture capital fund Invoke Capital.

Sometimes known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was slapped with charges after HP said it had uncovered deceit and a major accounting scandal within the firm. He spent a year on house arrest after being extradited from the UK.

In early June, at the end of a 12-week trial, a San Francisco jury acquitted Lynch of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He was also cleared on a charge of securities fraud later that month.

Lynch and Bacares have two daughters and six dogs, all named after engineering parts, according to the U.K.’s Sunday Times in a profile of Lynch from last month.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was also among the missing. She was preparing to study English literature at Oxford University, according to the Sunday Times.

Hannah is the younger of Mike Lynch’s two daughters, the Times reported . Mike Lynch told the outlet that his daughters had grown up with their father being publicly accused of fraud.

Jonathan Bloomer and Judy Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer is the non-executive chairman of both Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox, among other companies. Bloomer acted as a character witness on Lynch’s behalf during his fraud trial.

Hiscox Chief Executive Aki Hussain told Reuters in a statement that the firm was deeply shocked and saddened and their thoughts were with all those affected.

Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told BBC that he is processing the news and the family is waiting to hear updates.

“He was my elder by half an hour, so, it means a lot when you lose a twin brother,” Jeremy Bloomer told BBC. “We’ll still wait and see, so it’s fingers crossed.”

Jonathan Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a psychotherapist of nearly three decades and former teacher. She specializes in anxiety and stress. She studied English language and literature at Homerton College in Cambridge.

Christopher Morvillo and Neda Morvillo

A lawyer with Clifford Chance, Chris Morvillo was among the team that represented Mike Lynch during his trial. Morvillo is an American citizen.

He was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005, and he worked on the criminal investigation stemming from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Morvillo was a graduate of Fordham University School of Law and Villanova University.

Neda Morvillo, his wife, owns a hand-crafted jewelry company under her maiden name, Neda Nassiri. The company’s website said she has been designing and making jewelry for over 20 years.

In a post on LinkedIn after the conclusion of Lynch’s trial, Chris Morvillo acknowledged his family for their support during the case.

“And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.  None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home.

And they all lived happily ever after…."

Sinking of a super yacht adds to questions billionaire Mike Lynch wanted to put behind him

who owns cloud 9 superyacht

It was a sunny August morning when software entrepreneur Mike Lynch, 59, gathered ten of his closest friends along with his wife and daughter on the dock of Porto di Milazzo, on the Northern coast of Sicily. They had come to celebrate his freedom. Only months before, several of the guests played crucial roles in persuading a San Francisco jury to acquit Lynch of federal charges related to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Five days after the yacht left port, Lynch, his daughter, four guests, and a hired chef were dead in the Mediterranean Sea after a storm flooded the ship. The drowned included the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, a star witness at Lynch’s trial, as well as one of Lynch’s lead defense attorneys. Among the survivors were a former Autonomy exec who went on to become a partner at Lynch’s venture capital firm, a second member of his defense team, and his wife, who reportedly owns nearly all his fortune. The same day of the drowning, U.K. news outlets reported that Lynch’s co-defendant in the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, who had also been acquitted, had been fatally run over by a car as he was out jogging—a shocking coincidence.

Less than a week after the tragedy, there are far more questions than answers. Did the yacht named Bayesian—an homage to a statistical theorem for predicting future outcomes—simply fall victim to a terrible storm? How did most of the crew and a few passengers escape, and why couldn’t they reach Lynch and the six others who did not make it out? Italian officials are looking into manslaughter charges, but it’s not yet clear who they may have in their crosshairs. Giovanni Costantino, who runs The Italian Sea Group that owns Perini Navi, the Italian maker of the yacht, had harsh words for the crew, who he blames. “This is the mistake that cries out for vengeance,” he told Reuters .

There are also huge questions swirling around the business ventures of the man dubbed the “British Bill Gates.” While the Bayesian excursion was to serve as a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal on all charges in the U.S.—where he had spent months under house arrest—the reality is that his legal troubles were far from over. In a January 2022 civil trial, the UK’s High Court found that HPE had “substantially succeeded” in proving that Autonomy leaders had fraudulently made it look like the company was earning more revenue than it was. In 2019 Autonomy’s CFO was convicted of 16 counts and sentenced to five years in prison. At this time, the UK case is in a holding pattern as the judge determines what damages are owed to HPE. (The company’s spokesperson Adam Bauer says HPE is, “saddened by this tragic event, and our thoughts are with the families and friends of all those who lost their lives.”)

But Lynch’s passing also looms over Invoke Capital, the venture firm he founded in 2011 and whose managing partner—Charlotte Golunski—survived the yacht disaster and saved her 1-year old baby. One of Invoke’s most prominent bets was a 2013 seed stage investment in Darktrace, a cybersecurity firm on whose board Lynch sat until 2018. Darktrace has developed a reputation as a sleek AI cybersecurity startup with ties to spy agencies like MI5 and the U.S. National Security Agency. It also became the target of short-sellers who in 2023 expressed doubt over Darktrace’s financial filings—the same sort of allegations that plagued Lynch’s Autonomy.

Darktrace insists that the shortseller’s allegations were baseless, and they say an EY audit it commissioned showed this to be the case. In April Darktrace received a $5.3 billion acquisition offer from the giant private equity firm, Thoma Bravo. The deal, which Fortune reported will likely go forward despite Lynch’s death, stood to help rehabilitate Lynch’s business reputation. As of August 14, he and his wife collectively owned 3.21% of the company, which would be worth some $170 million upon the deal’s completion. Invoke Capital has not responded to multiple requests for comment and Darktrace declined comment.

Following his U.S. acquittal, Lynch was pleased enough with the state of things that he had begun celebrating weeks before the yacht party. In the days following the not-guilty verdict, Lynch, his wife, Stephen Chamberlain and his wife, the attorney Chris Morvillo—who drowned on Bayesian—and 20 other lawyers gathered at a restaurant at a hotel near the San Francisco courthouse.

Brian Heberlig, an attorney at Steptoe who gave the closing argument in Lynch’s trial, recalls that Morvillo gave a moving toast, telling those assembled that the trial was more than just a job, but one of their life’s works. “He really was a brilliant man,” Heberlig told Fortune , fighting back tears as he remembered Lynch. “And he ran his legal defense the same way I imagine he ran Autonomy. He let the experts do their jobs, while still having a strong grasp on the material. As he used to say, ‘Let the brain surgeons do the surgery.’”

That night was the last time Heberlig ever saw Lynch or Morvillo.

A ‘virtually unsinkable’ boat

The sailing party departed August 14—five days before the storm—and was comprised of 12 guests and 10 crew. The Bayesian was one of the biggest yachts of its kind. Its first stop was a cluster of small islands off the coast of Sicily. Then it jetted across the sea to the Sicilian town of Cefalu, before putting down anchor for the final time on the coast of Palermo, a favorite getaway for the rich and famous, and a former haunt for the mafia.

who owns cloud 9 superyacht

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who reportedly held the couple’s entire $1.1 billion fortune, was jolted awake on August 18 as the boat began to tilt. Glass from a shattered window exploded across the deck, according to reports, cutting her feet as she ran to investigate.

Black and white security  footage  appears to show the outline of what is believed to be the 184-foot sailing yacht, which used call sign 2ICB8, slowly disappearing behind a thicker and thicker veil of rain. Nearby villagers and fishermen say they saw a sea tornado, called a waterspout. Soon after, the yacht lay on the ocean floor.

Theories are swirling about why the yacht sank. One holds that a bay door was left open in the storm, causing the ship to flood and sink in minutes. Another holds that the Bayesian’s 246-foot tall aluminum mast—one of the tallest in the world— broke in the wind and took the boat down with it.

Most news reports say the yacht sank almost instantly, but the CEO of the company that bought the boat’s maker after it went bankrupt in 2021 disputes that. In a Financial Times report, he called the boat “virtually unsinkable,” and says that it dragged its anchor for 16 minutes before it sank.

During those fateful moments, a far older nearby yacht, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, built in 1957, was drifting on a similar course as the Bayesian and not only survived, but came to help. Some onboard saw a red flare shooting across the rainy sky—an emergency signal from those who had fled the doomed yacht, drawing the attention to a life raft filled with 15 of the 22 passengers.

Passenger Golunski, 35, who helped run Autonomy the first year it was at HP, described holding her one-year old daughter Sophia, as she screamed for help. One of Lynch’s most trusted employees, Golunski was a founding partner at Invoke Capital, the London-based firm that backed Darktrace. Lynch’s wife Bacares was also in the life raft along with Clifford Chance lawyer Ayla Ronald, 36, who reportedly texted to her father: “there are deaths.”

The lifeboat survivors were soon plucked from the sea while the Bayesian came to its current resting place 50 meters below the surface. Over the course of the next 72 hours, a team of scuba divers from the Guardia Costiera and specially trained cave divers from the Vigili del Fuoco, the local fire department, used boats and a helicopter to triangulate the yacht’s position. The divers, working in bursts of 8 to 12 minutes, searched the Bayesian’s six guest suites, master suite, multiple living areas, and dining room.

The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was the first to be found, floating on the water’s surface. On Wednesday, two days after the wreck, four more bodies were discovered, and on Thursday a fifth. Among them were Lynch and Chris Morvillo of the prestigious law firm Clifford Chance, who had made the controversial decision to have Lynch testify, and questioned him on the stand right before he was acquitted. The others discovered were Morvillo’s wife, Neda, as well as the Morgan Stanley banker and key witness, Jonathan Bloomer, who had been a former executive director at Autonomy, and his wife Judy. The body of Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was pulled from the sea on Friday.

The U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency tells Fortune it is in contact with the Italian authorities but would not provide further information. The UK’s Foreign Office told Fortune it is providing “consular support to a number of British nationals and their families…and are in contact with the local authorities.”

More questions than answers

Even as loved ones and the survivors begin to come to terms with the human toll of the tragedy, the business world has begun assessing Lynch’s complicated past, and his many business dealings.

Lynch was born of modest means to a nurse and firefighter in a suburb of London. From an early age he showed a proclivity towards technology and a fiery determination. He studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge, then returned for a PhD in artificial neural networks, the building blocks of artificial intelligence. When he was still studying for his PhD, he started his first venture, Cambridge Neurodynamics, monetizing computerized fingerprint recognition, eventually evolving into Autonomy.

Founded in 1996 with David Tabizel and Richard Gaunt, Autonomy used an early version of artificial intelligence to quickly scan what’s known as “unstructured data,” especially including language. Autonomy quickly became a darling of the UK’s fledgling tech scene, and it was seen as a crowning achievement when, in 2011, the company struck an $11 billion deal to be purchased by HP, now HPE. The deal, however, was quickly engulfed in scandal when a year later the new owner alleged accounting fraud and wrote down its investment by $8.8 billion.

Despite the baggage around Autonomy, Lynch continued to ride high in the tech world through his venture firm, Invoke Capital, which he founded in 2012. One of its most profitable investments was Darktrace, which he backed in 2013 and joined as a board member. By 2016 he told TechCrunch 60 employees from Autonomy were working at Invoke, that he’d raised a billion dollars to invest in startups, and that Darktrace was worth $500 million.

While fighting the legal battle over Autonomy and building Invoke, Lynch enjoyed the trappings of a mogul. The same year he announced his billion-dollar startup fund, he was sailing the Bayesian, worth an estimated $25 million. He reportedly also owned a $6 million, 69-acre Georgian manor.

By early 2020 Darktrace shared deep connections with Autonomy, including half of Darktrace’s board and six of its eight top executives. The following year Darktrace went public, soaring 40% above its pre-market value. But the victory lap was brief. In September 2022, an acquisition talk between private equity firm Thoma Bravo and Darktrace fell through , sending share prices tumbling. In early 2023, the short-selling firm Quintessential Capital Management published a 70-page report accusing Darktrace of similar misconduct that had sunk Autonomy.

“We are deeply skeptical about the validity of Darktrace’s financial statements,” the report read. Darktrace’s shares plunged as much as 17% after the report was published, though the company said at the time that the management team and board had “rigorous controls in place.” Darktrace hired EY to perform an audit, which stabilized its share price after the accounting firm found the company’s earlier financial results did not need to be restated. Darktrace never publicly released the report, however, with a spokesperson saying at the time that it contained “commercially sensitive information.”

More recently, Darktrace’s CEO Poppy Gustafsson wrote in the firm’s Q4 trading report of “shareholders voting overwhelmingly in favour” of the acquisition, and added the company is “awaiting the conclusion of the remaining regulatory processes.”

Until very recently, Darktrace had sought to distance itself from Lynch and his VC firm. In December, shareholders passed a resolution that rejected Invoke executive Patrick Jacob’s reappointment to its board. This April, Invoke lost the right to that same board seat when it was discovered its shares had fallen below the required 10% threshold. Nonetheless, in a memorial to Lynch, Darktrace CEO Poppy Gustafsson wrote : “Without Mike, there would be no Darktrace. We owe him so much.”

While the Italian authorities continue to investigate the crash site, one thing is certain: the swirl of legal and business battles that surrounded Lynch during his lifetime are likely to continue after his death. A local Italian news site reports that the public prosecutor’s office in a nearby town, Termini Imerese, is looking into allegations of manslaughter surrounding the sunken boat. And two months before Lynch died, former UK secretary of state David Davis reportedly said he was working with Lynch to scrap U.S./U.K extradition agreements that allowed Lynch’s trial to happen in the first place.

On Wednesday, August 21, Davis told GB News he would continue that fight in memory of Lynch. “We need to get a grip of this,” said Davis. “Mike, when he’d won his case, almost the first thing he did was ring me up and say, ‘we’re going to have to defeat this treaty, we’re going to have to overcome this treaty and get it changed for the better.'”

“I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said after the verdict.

Lynch’s desire to extend the legal fight even after his not-guilty verdict reflects the scrappiness he displayed throughout his life. This helped him ascend to the highest rungs of business and moguldom—but the success also came with a tenuous quality as questions about his business dealings dogged him for years. The not-guilty verdict and the pending Darktrace sale meant Lynch was in position to finally cast off that shadow. But now his ultimate legacy is poised to be tied forever to a mysterious and tragic hour on the Mediterranean Sea.

Who Was on the Sunken Yacht? Tech Mogul Mike Lynch, His Family and Friends.

Mr. Lynch, the former chief executive of the software firm Autonomy, who was acquitted on fraud charges in June, was with friends and family when the yacht went down in a severe storm.

Mike Lynch, in a suit and carrying a leather briefcase, is walking toward a building.

By Michael J. de la Merced

Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.

A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard a superyacht was supposed to be a celebratory event for the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

Instead, it turned into a disaster after the yacht, a 180-foot boat called the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily in a violent storm. Of the 22 people aboard, 15 were rescued and seven others died . Search operations ended on Friday after the final body was recovered from the site of the sunken yacht .

Here’s what we know about the passengers.

Mike Lynch and his family

Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC.

In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch.

HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018.

Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges.

An official in Palermo, Sicily’s capital, said on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered. His wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian.

The body of Hannah Lynch , Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was thought to be recovered on Friday.

The other guests

Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange, was on the yacht when it sank, along with his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71. Their bodies are thought to be among those recovered, but Italian authorities have not identified them.

Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, was also on the yacht. A former federal prosecutor who comes from a family of prominent lawyers, Mr. Morvillo represented Mr. Lynch during his criminal trial in San Francisco. His wife, Neda, 57, was with him on the yacht. Their bodies are also assumed to be among those recovered.

“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” a representative of Clifford Chance said in a statement.

Surviving passengers rescued from the yacht include Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Mr. Lynch’s venture firm, Invoke Capital; Ms. Golunski’s husband, James Emslie; and their one-year-old daughter Sophie. Also rescued were Ayla Ronald, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and her partner, Matthew Fletcher.

The yacht had a crew of 10, and nine were rescued. The body of the chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the water, the Sicilian Civil Protection Department said.

Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting, and Kitty Bennett and Susan Campbell Beachy contributed research.
