As a recognised RYA training centre the club runs a programme of sessions for juniors to learn the skills and feel the joy of sailing in a safe environment with trained instructors.  See our junior sailing page for more details.   Our motor boat members have a wonderful stretch of water to explore and many varied places to visit. We also arrange club rallies for everyone now and again. We have ample car and boat parking facilities with good access to the water at all states of the tide. During the Summer months, we benefit from the use of the adjacent public jetty and pontoon. The Clubhouse has two large sundecks and an enclosed conservatory offering unbroken views of all the activity on the water. Membership is available for sailors, social members and corporates at very reasonable prices. From April to the end of September, the club is open every evening Monday to Saturday and Sunday lunchtime. From October to March, we close on Monday and Tuesday evenings. What we know about the Bayesian superyacht that sank

The Bayesian, which capsized in the early hours of Monday, was an award-winning yacht with the second-tallest mast in the world.

The Bayesian, an award-winning superyacht, sank during bad weather off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed divers had found the bodies of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, and one of Mr Lynch's lawyers Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda.

Recaldo Thomas, the on-board chef, was the first to be confirmed dead earlier this week.

Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued along with 14 others - including Charlotte Golunski, a mother who told la Repubblica she held her one-year-old baby above the waves to save her from drowning.

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing.

But what do we know about the ship?

The British-flagged 56-metre ship - previously called the Salute - was built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, and refitted in 2020.

It had six guest bedrooms - one master, three doubles, and two twins - holding 12 people, and could carry another 10 crew members.

Pictures show air conditioning units in several of the bedrooms, which could counter expert claims open windows may have caused water to rush in and tip the boat over faster.

Shipspotting.com says it was owned by a firm called Revtom Limited. Mike Lynch's wife, Ms Bacares, is named as the sole shareholder of the firm on company documents.

The yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune involved a statistical method known as Bayesian inference, based on an 18th-century theory, which helps forecasters predict outcomes more reliably.

We tested Neyland Stadium's new beer rules and Wi-Fi at Tennessee's first home game

I watched an SEC team struggle to compete against a non-Power Five opponent from the discomfort of a backless bleacher inside Neyland Stadium. The matchup: Ole Miss vs. Tulane, live from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Not what you were thinking? Let me explain.

Sept. 9 had been on the radar of Tennessee football fans since last season’s Orange Bowl victory against Clemson. Between then and now, some major improvements have been made to the Vols' 102-year-old stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Most notably on display Saturday was stadium Wi-Fi, debuting for the first time with seemingly no major kinks I could identify.

To be clear, I have no connection to Tulane, other than the game was playing in the student union auditorium prior to Tennessee taking the field. Needless to say, indoor areas are incredibly popular prior to early September kickoffs.

How was the internet in Neyland Stadium?

Once I convinced myself to leave my air-conditioned oasis, I live-streamed Hulu in Neyland Stadium to keep up with the Green Wave and college football scores across the country. I added to my Instagram story so followers could keep up with me.

I even copied and pasted the following sentence from my recent Knox News article, which loaded like a charm.

Deputy Athletics Director Ryan Alpert, chief operating officer for Tennessee Athletics, said the goal is to have full stadium Wi-Fi service by the fifth home game of the season. For now, it’s limited to the lower bowl.

Plans call for 2,300 internet access points throughout the stadium. That's roughly one access point for every 44 seats, though previous estimates were one for every 55.

I don’t know about your personal internet provider, but at-home connectivity can be spotty at best. Surprisingly, in an experiment to test the Wi-Fi and stop watching the abysmal on-field play, my connection to RockyTopWiFi went away just as I stepped off the ramp and into the upper bowl.

Premium seats at Neyland Stadium get club upgrade

For fear of losing my online relationship with the outside world, despite having tickets to be here in person, I made my way back to Section T — five rows behind the gray chair-back seats, which give fans access to the Lower West Club and some serious lumbar support.

The club area is another new addition – upgraded substantially since last season – and I was lucky enough to take a tour before the Vols’ 2023 campaign began. But on game days, good luck seeing it for yourself. That is, unless you have $4,600 per ticket per year.

While I would have loved a shot from the club’s liquor bar to ease the pain of watching, I settled instead for an everyday average concourse beer.

High prices, quick service at Neyland Stadium beer lines

Knox News was told before Saturday that prices would range from $9 to $15 per beverage. If you were at the game and found a $9 beer, please let me know down which dark corridor these drinks were hidden.

From what I could tell, prices ranged roughly $14-$15 everywhere I looked.

Sales look different this year following three underage transactions that happened last season. The city threatened to strip alcohol permits over these incidents unless the beer vendor made some changes.

Part of the new strategy is for every ID to be checked by an employee – not a volunteer – no matter how old you and I may look.

My license was scanned before I entered a walkthrough queue, and I was directed to keep my ID in hand for the person who would handle the sale. I grabbed a $15 Twisted Tea from the cooler, presented my ID again and then waited for my payment to process. In the meantime, my beverage was cracked for me (I guess we’re paying for the service).

This was the only moment internet seemed slow, though I’m not totally sure I was connected to the same network as the vendors. Surprisingly, lines were so short throughout the game that a little extra waiting didn’t matter.

Just for good measure, and totally not because I wanted an IPA, I placed another order from a different beer stand in the second half. Once again, my ID was scanned at the beginning of the line before being checked by the server. No connection problems at all.

While that’s more than Joe Milton can say, the Vols still got the victory − and I got two beers. I guess you could say we all won.

During Tennessee football's home opener against Austin Peay, two Vols fans each enjoy a beer purchase inside Neyland Stadium, one year after three underage sales nearly caused alcohol to be removed from concession stands. As part of an agreement between the city of Knoxville and the beer vendor, Aramark, all IDs must be checked by an employee and scanned.

Extremely well maintained. Laundry facility on site and great neighbors! Nothing better than living in the Yacht Club for 3.5 years!! Chuck's amazing!

Here's what will be preserved in the new Cape Coral Yacht Club building

Portrait of Luis Zambrano

The Cape Coral City Council will preserve and recreate a few aspects of the Yacht Club ballroom building into a new development based on a volunteer group's suggestions.

There were four recommendations on what should be preserved: Interior ceiling beams, stonework, fountain, and the front glass doors with the Yacht Club written on them.

City Council decided this week that the front doors will be used in the final development, but the other recommended pieces will be recreated or incorporated as aesthetics only.

"To me, the concept is more important than the physical material you are trying to save," Mayor John Gunter said.

The city of Cape Coral is eyeing an early 2024 date for the complete demolition of the Yacht Club's facilities, which could cost up to $1 million.

The Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park is the city's premier gemstone, but Hurricane Ian, a Category 5 storm, devastated the area on Sept. 28, leading to the park's closure and community contention on what will happen with the property.

Previous discussions estimated that it  could take years to repair the Yacht club and as much as $100 million to renovate the entire area. The city will then provide the council with finance options, possibly going the route of using bonds  as previously discussed.

Previous coverage Cape Coral stakeholder groups tours the Yacht Club to determine what will be saved

Related Cape Coral Yacht Club demolitions and preservation could cost up to $1 million.

Stakeholders Group

Approximately 1,400 residents responded to join the stakeholder group that made the recommendations on what to preserve. Twelve residents were chosen randomly, while the city chose an additional two, one representative for the historical society and one for the youth council.

The group was tasked with deciding what elements of the Yacht Club Ballroom building should be preserved and incorporated into a new building meaningfully.

The demolition of the Yacht Club's existing building has been contentious as residents and officials are mixed on the council's decision to take a "clean slate" approach in January to renovate the area and its facilities after Hurricane Ian paused the initial renovation plans.

The park contains the main ballroom, Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, a pool, a pier, and a beach; all of which will be affected by the upcoming renovations.

Despite the opposition, the council approved an amended contract with Kimley Horn in June.

James Pankonin, a landscape architect and urban designer with Kimley Horn, presented the information.

These were the items considered for preservation:

  • Interior ceiling beams
  • Fireplace Stonework
  • Chandeliers/Scones
  • Terrazzo flooring
  • Exterior Beams
  • Exterior Posts/Beam supports

Councilmembers discussion

Councilmember Tom Hayden, who is the only member against the demolition, said the recommendations made sense.

"I don't think there are any big surprises in what the group saw and may want to incorporate into the new design," Hayden said.

He wanted the fireplace made of stonework and the fountain to either be recreated or used in some fashion.

Hayden also recommended dedicating a room to the old Yacht Club building filled with memorabilia and historical antiques and something dedicated to the original space of the ballroom.

"I think it would be nice, somewhere outside, to have a plaque near where the structure is that says that this was the site of the original Yacht Club," Hayden said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he liked the fountain and wanted the plaque attached to it, which is dedicated to an employee's service, saved.

Gunter said he wanted to prioritize saving many of these recommendations through concept if the physical material proves too difficult to preserve.

He said from his experience dealing with fireplaces, the materials tend to crumble when trying to remove them. He extends the same feeling to the beams and fountain.

"If we can grab a small section, great, but if we can't, that's okay too."

Although he was fully in support of keeping the glass door and incorporating them as doors into the room Hayden recommended.

Councilmember Steinke echoed the mayor's sentiments. He recommended commissioning an artist to make items out of the materials, which will go to benefit the Cape Coral Museum of History.

Councilmember Patty Cummings liked the suggestions and wanted a plaque that tells the story of why the Yacht Club was changed with a mention of Hurricane Ian.

On the beams, councilmember Jessica Cosden wanted the city to preserve and use the beams if possible.

Councilmember Dan Sheppard said he didn't want to limit the potential designs of the area, and he'd rather not see a room dedicated to the old Yacht Club.

He said a local artist can instead use the material to create art like a history wall with history text.

"I'm more for that than try to design a building with a room that I don't think a lot of people are going to use," Sheppard said.

Councilmember Keith Long also agreed with the idea of preserving and avoiding big costs. He also wants to see a dedicated room in the new building.

Toward the end of the discussion, Hayden became exasperated by the lack of support from the rest of the council for preserving the original pieces.

"I don't want to look at this as some sort of effort with smoke and mirrors where we just decided we needed to do this just to get their input to cover ourselves and be proud that we did it," Hayden said. "There's no reason to do these groups if we don't do what they say."

Welsh and Cummings countered and brought up issues with logistics and cost when speaking on the beams.

"I'm not for spending the extra money to remove them," Cummings said. "We can go and try to save what we can once, and I hate to use the word but, when it's all over to go in and grab some scraps and pieces, and I'm in agreement, and hire an artist to put something together."

A Waterspout Was Seen When a Luxury Yacht Sank. What Is It?

Witnesses reported seeing the tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian, a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

  • Share full article

The Bayesian sailing yacht

By Eve Sampson

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.

Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.

Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .

While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .

Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.

How common are waterspouts?

Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.

“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.

What may have happened?

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.

While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.

Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.

“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.

He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting.
