Robert Miller's 140ft Mari Cha IV takes two and a half days off Charlie Barr's 1905 Atlantic record

Century-old transatlantic sailing record falls

The 100-year old west-to-east race record across the North Atlantic, between New York and the Lizard, fell this morning to Robert Miller’s Mari-Cha IV.

Mari-Cha IV, a 140-foot (43m) schooner that is the world’s longest modern grand-prix race yacht, crossed the line due south of Cornwall’s Lizard point at 10:05:23 UTC making her time for the 2,925 mile course from the Ambrose light off New York harbour, 9 days 15 hours 55 minutes and 23 second at an average speed for the course of 12.61 knots. The record set by America’s Cup veteran Charlie Barr on board Wilson Marshall’s Atlantic in the race for the Kaiser’s Cup in 1905 was 12 days 4 hours 1 minute and 19 seconds, so Mari-Cha IV, despite the inclement weather conditions experienced during the first half of the race, has still taken 2 days 12 hours 5 minutes 56 seconds off the race record. Her official time awaits formal ratification by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.

“I am proud to report that Mari-Cha IV crossed the ‘virtual’ line by the Lizard Lighthouse at 10:05:23 UTC this morning to break Charlie Barr’s 100 year old record set on Atlantic back in 1905,” commented owner Robert Miller. “The feeling on board was electric but also emotional, as, even though we have crossed the Atlantic faster on board this great boat, this has definitely been the toughest test yet for Mari-Cha IV and her crew. It has been a difficult, hard fought crossing all the way, but now, I am pleased to say, a most satisfying one.

“However, as is characteristic of this fantastic crew, our moment of joy has been put aside briefly while we continue to push hard racing up the English Channel to complete the second and final part of this race, which will end at the Needles, Isle of Wight. We have come a long way, but will remain focused on being the first boat to cross the race finish line and look forward to taking up our mooring outside the Royal Yacht Squadron later on today.”

The futuristic-looking giant silver hulled racing yacht is due to reach the Needles this evening and from there will continue on to Cowes, Isle of Wight.

Mari Cha IV: The Elegance of Speed

Philippe Briand - Mari Cha IV

The strategy of building a sailing yacht that wins races is simple. It must be faster than the competition. The task of ensuring the win, however, is a bit more complicated. When a racing yacht shaves two days off of a Transatlantic West to East record, as Mari Cha IV did in 2003, that is a strategy worth studying.

Born of a one-sentence brief requested by owner Bob Miller, Mari Cha IV’s design team received a clear directive: create the fastest monohull in the world. When the experienced and capable team composed of naval architects and designers Philippe Briand, Clay Oliver, and Greg Elliott accepted Miller’s challenge, they set out to make history. Miller simply wanted to regain a record Transatlantic title. No one, it turns out, would be disappointed.

With highly confidential inquiries to suppliers, the team approached spar makers, sailmakers, designers and sailing experts essential to their task. Beginning to wonder about the directive, they sought clarification, asking Miller what, exactly, this project was expected to be fastest at doing. Miller’s reply was, again, very simple. Everything.

And so it goes. Eighteen months of testing and design initiated in 1999 yielded a pioneering concept. Mari Cha IV’s 42-meter hull would be constructed of carbon fiber, in a shape that minimized draft and maximized beam to decrease friction while slipping through the water. Her broad beam and very pointy “pointy-end” were just the beginning of the exquisite yacht about to unfold.

Testing and research directed that Mari Cha IV would employ a schooner rig, splitting the sail plan to ease the burden of manually powered winches. A requirement of the racing crowns Mari Cha IV was destined to earn, this single requirement would prove imperative. Wind tunnel comparisons with ketch and sloop sail plans set the most manageable and most efficient size of individual sails at 300 square meters. Significantly smaller than that of other sail plans, comparisons eliminated a number of options while highlighting the advantages of a schooner rig, noting its high sail area and low center. Still, Mari Cha IV would carry a massive 1,415 square meters of sail area, 904 of which would be dedicated to upwind sailing.

It was decided that this innovative design would benefit from a combination of both a swing keel and water ballast, putting her at an advantage with optimum heeling angles for varying conditions. Balancing the effects of the two forces, tests aboard Mari Cha IV proved the use of the hydraulically-controlled keel, in sync with the ten-ton water ballast, provided a solid speed advantage. Dumping the water to save weight while canting the 6.5 m swing keel to anywhere between plus-or-minus 40º gave the crew new options to work with.

Record breaker
MARI-CHA III is a Super Maxi whose hydraulic sailing systems may be converted to manual operation to comply with the rules stipulated by the World Speed Sailing Record Council.
The interior can be dismantled to reduce weight for racing programs and give room to the racing crew of 25. However, the full width owner's suite with its adjoining study and large shower room remains largely intact, as do the crew quarters. MARI-CHA III, in racing mode, became the new Atlantic record breaker on October 24, 1998, when she crossed the finish line at Lizard Point in southern England at 12:08:17. MARI-CHA III sailed from New York to Lizard in 8 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 41 seconds. She averaged 14 knots. Sydney/Hobart 1999 Hobart Dec 28, 1999
07:32 am
Mari-Cha III, Bob Miller's 147' Ketch, holder of the fastest time accross the Atlantic, beat this morning the Sydney to Hobart record. Sailing the 627 course in 1day 18h 37' at an average speed of 14.75 Knts Mari-Cha beat Morning Glory's record by 19h30'10" a gain of 46.The crew lead by the owner Skipper Bob Miller and co-skipper Jef d'Etiveaud included 3 watch leaders: international top sailors Michael Sanderson, Tom Dodson and Herve Jan who arrived in Sydney after his victory in the Transat Jacques Vabre. Prince Pavlos of Greece and Prince Alexander Von Furstenberg were members of the crew. On a rough course with wind averaging between 25 and 40 knots, the ketch showed running superiority often hiting speeds in excess of 30 Knts best speed recorded is 32.45 Kts in winds favoring lighter boats such as Nokia which arriving two hours after Mari-Cha took the official race 1st place. Mari-Cha however established a new class record. She also becomes the fastest boat on this course. Bob Miller who found the race "too short"... comments: We trust we set a hight level of performance for the next superyacht race on the same course.

MARI CHA III Perfomance Ketch | From EUR€ 70,000 /wk

Sailing yacht MARI CHA III is a legendary superyacht of 44,7 in length as designed by Greg Elliot. This magnificent ketch is as comfortable on a luxury yacht charter as she is on the race circuit, incorporating both luxury and sailing performance. Mari Cha III yacht received an extensive refit in 2010 by Derecktor Shipyard with interior by Clear Yacht Interiors.

Sailing yacht MARI CHA III features a traditionally styled interior which was designed by John Munford. The interior boasts rich woodwork which was superbly crafted by skilled cabinet makers. All the panelling and frames are executed in thin veneers of Honduras Mahogany. Marble surfaces, beautiful fabrics, "objets d'art" and luxurious accoutrements have been carefully selected to enhance S/Y MARI-CHA III's beautiful interior.

The superyacht’s accommodation includes three large guest cabins. The full width owner’s stateroom is the jewel in the crown with its adjoining study and large shower room.

Yacht designer Greg Elliot designed her with an impressive beam, even for her length, at 29ft 6 in (9.00 m). This healthy width helps to facilitate interior space as well as deck space in the mid section of the yacht.
