Lil Yachty has finally learned the difference between a cello and a clarinet, and it’s glorious

The Atlanta rapper unleashed his debut album 'Teenage Emotions' last week, but he's had to backtrack on one particular lyric after it blew up on social media

Ahh, Lil Yachty – the young Atlanta rapper with the nautical nom de plume, cherry-red hair and split artistic personalities: along with the auto-tuned emotion of Yachty, there’s his far more aggressive alter-ego Lil Boat (which stands for ‘Best Of All Time’) and their ‘uncle’, Darnell Boat.

He’s one of the most-talked-about artists in hip-hop at the moment, with some loving the fresh take he’s brought to the genre (and let’s not forget that awesome album cover) and others absolutely fucking hating how he supposedly embodies everything that’s “wrong” with hip-hop in 2017.

It’s fair to say that the precocious 19-year-old splits opinion, but one thing the majority of us can agree on when it comes to Yachty is that the lad knows how to self-deprecate – especially after he admitted to a pretty glaring fuck-up on one of the stand-out tracks from his newly-released debut studio album, ‘Teenage Emotions’.

The mistake in question can be found on the track ‘Peek A Boo’, with features his ‘big brothers’ Migos . It’s a buoyant, trap-laden creation that sees Yachty and Migos trading verses and spitting fire; the track bouncing along with the name of the children’s game manipulated to serve as its filthy hook. However, at one point in Yachty’s opening verse, he makes this rather a.) explicit and b.) eyebrow-raising observation: “ My new bitch yellow / She blow that dick like a cello .” Blatant, blatant misogyny aside, there’s something not quite here. Let’s look at it again: “ She blow that dick like a cello “. Blow… like… a cello. Ahem.

Twitter user Brandon Wardell picked up on the mistake first, and offered Yachty some very visual clarification on his mistake.

Speaking to Genius for a feature that explored the meaning behind the lyrics to ‘Peek A Boo’, Yachty had no choice but to front up to his orchestral mistake.

“Before you come at me, I’ma let you know,” he began. “I’ma blame my A&R. Because he listened to that song many times and he allowed me to say that.. I guess for a second, I thought a cello was a woodwind instrument and it is not.

“And nobody ever said shit. Nobody ever pulled up a pic and said, ‘Hey man. I don’t know if you know what this is, but it ain’t that.’ I fucked up. I thought Squidward played the cello. He don’t. That’s a flute. I fucked up. But it do sound good.”

Over the past week, Lil Yachty’s debut album Teenage Emotions has garnered a lot of attention. After blaming his A&R for allowing him to keep his cello line in “Peek A Boo,” the 19-year-old admitted to lying about the lyric during an interview with Hot 97 . “No, I actually thought it was a woodwind instrument,” Yachty told the morning crew.

The debacle stemmed from Twitter calling out the Yachty lyric — “My new b—h yellow/ she blow that d–k like a cello” — as the cello is a stringed instrument that can’t be, well, blown. 

Lil Yachty Knows That 'Peek A Boo' Cello Lyric Makes No Sense

Yachty also addressed the slip-up during an interview with  Genius  last week. “OK, let’s stop for a second. Before you come at me, I’ma let you know. I’ma blame my A&R. Despite Cellogate making headlines, Yachty continues to flourish. He just landed the cover of Paper   magazine for their summer issue where he speaks on his creative process, his favorite foods, and why he remains unaffected by the criticism.

Lil Yachty 's Teenage Emotions was released last week, May 26. To coincide with the release he sat down with Genius to break down the lyrics of recent single "Peek A Boo." During the conversation, Lil Boat conceded that the line "My new bitch yellow / she blow that dick like a cello," isn't entirely correct when it comes to musical instruments and how they are played.

"OK, let's stop for a second," Yachty said mounting his defense. "Before you come at me, I'ma let you know. I'ma blame my A&R. Because he listened to that song many times and he allowed me to say that. I guess for a second I thought a cello was a woodwind instrument and it is not. And nobody ever said shit. ... Nobody ever pulled up a pic and said, "Hey man. I don't know if you know what this is, but it ain't that." ... I fucked up. I thought Squidward played the cello. He don't. That's a flute. I fucked up."

The error was picked up on by @BRANDONWARDELL and blew up on Twitter.

Spongebob Squarepants fans in the comments were then quick to tell Yachty that Squidward actually plays clarinet.

Yachty promptly noted this and making it clear he now understands the many different instruments of the world.

This is a cello, which is a bowed or plucked string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths.

In a video for the lyrics website Genius , the 19-year-old rapper explained the meaning behind “ Peek a Boo ,” his hit single featuring the rap group Migos .

The song features a number of confusing lyrics, but no lyric has been more difficult for listeners to understand than, “She blow that d–k like a cello.”

“I guess for a second, I thought a cello was a woodwind instrument and it is not,” Yachty said.

He blames a person on his team for not catching the mistake after listening to the song many times before it was released.

“Nobody ever pulled up a pic and said, ‘Hey man. I don’t know if you know what this is, but it ain’t that.'”

The source of Yachty’s befuddlement goes back to the popular animated series “SpongeBob Squarepants.”

“I thought Squidward played the cello,” Yachty said. “He don’t. That’s a flute.”

For the record, Squidward plays another woodwind instrument: the clarinet.

Lil Yachty dropped “Teenage Emotions” on Friday and will play a few dates in North America and Australia before embarking on The Teenage Tour in August. He’ll play in New York’s Terminal 5 on Aug 25 .

“She Blow That Dick Like A Cello” Makes No Sense, And Lil Yachty Is Sorry

Ever since Lil Yachty released his single “ Peek A Boo ” featuring Migos, listeners have been scratching their heads about his lyric, “My new bitch yellow/ She blow that dick like a cello.” Since when does playing the cello involve blowing? Or is he saying this woman’s fellatio is as beautiful as a glorious cello sonata? A lot of us are confused about Yachty’s alleged appeal , but this was genuinely perplexing.

As Slate points out, Yachty has addressed the confusion with a Genius annotation explaining that he simply didn’t know what a cello was: “I guess for a second, I thought a cello was a woodwind instrument and it is not.” He admits, “I fucked up,” but also blames his A&R rep for failing to bring this matter to his attention. Here’s the annotation in full:

Squidward Tentacles, the SpongeBob Squarepants character Yachty referenced, plays clarinet, not flute, a fact multiple people tweeted at Yachty over the weekend.

Lil Yachty Is Sorry He Doesn’t Know What a Cello Looks Like, Blames SpongeBob

After enduring weeks of online mockery for writing lyrics that betray, at the very least, a startling unfamiliarity with the names of musical instruments, Lil Yachty has released a statement. At issue are these lines from “ Peek a Boo ,” the lead single from his just-released album Teenage Emotions :

My new bitch yellow She blow that dick like a cello

The cello is a stringed instrument, played either by plucking individual strings with one’s fingers or by scraping a bow across them. If Lil Yachty means what he says here, he seems to be referring to extraordinarily unpleasant techniques for “blow[ing] that dick.” Alternatively, Lil Yachty could have either an unconventional way of playing the cello or an unconventional understanding of what a cello is. It was the last of these possibilities that turned out to be true, as was revealed when Lil Yachty annotated the song’s lyrics on Genius with an explanation. While he was indeed mistaken as to the identity of the instrument that he referred to as the “cello,” he believes that blame lies not within but with those around him, who failed to prevent him from doing something stupid. Sarah Sahim posted Lil Yachty’s statement on Twitter:

Unfortunately, Lil Yachty is still somewhat confused: The “Squidward” he refers to is presumably Squidward Tentacles, a character on the children’s animated television program SpongeBob SquarePants . Mr. Tentacles is a self-pitying anthropomorphic octopus, but he doesn’t play the flute. Instead, he plays a clarinet named Clarry, as seen in this footage:

Apprised of his error, Lil Yachty took to Twitter to apologize for muddying the waters further:

It appears, then, that Lil Yachty meant to indicate that his new girlfriend “blow[s] that dick” in a fashion that reminds him of an anthropomorphic octopus playing the clarinet. It’s unclear whether he intended that to be a compliment.
