Begin mei kwam het naar buiten dat de Nederlandse werf Oceanco uit Alblasserdam aan een nieuw project zou werken. Geruchten gingen door het rondte dat Amazon-oprichter Jeff Bezos de opdrachtgever zou zijn. De op één na rijkste man ter wereld heeft op het moment van schrijven een vermogen van $ 193 miljard, dus een jacht van honderden miljoentjes is voor hem geen enkel probleem. Deze week ging het schip op transport en dat trok uiteraard de aandacht van fotografen.

Jeff Bezos klopt aan bij Nederlandse scheepswerf Oceanco

Het gevaarte van 127 meter lang krijgt het modelnummer Y721 en is zowel het langste jacht dat ooit in Nederland is gebouwd en als het grootste superjacht ooit gebouwd bij Oceanco. Binnenkort zal het jacht worden overgebracht worden naar een andere faciliteit voor afbouw werkzaamheden.

Y721 mag dan wel het grootste Nederlandse zeiljacht ooit zijn, bij aflevering, gepland voor 2022, zal het schip wereldwijd gezien qua grootte genoegen moeten nemen met plek. Sailing Yacht A van de Russische miljardair Andrey Melnichenko, gebouwd door het Duitse Norbiskrug, blijft met een lengte van 142.81 meter de onbetwiste koning van de zeven zeeën. Oceanco’s 106,7 meter lange Black Pearl , waar we laatst met veel lof over spraken, concurreert goed mee met plaats drie en is het op twee na grootste zeiljacht gebouwd door Oceanco.

Nadat Y721 gedeeltelijk werd opgebouwd in Zwijnenburg, werd het schip verplaats naar de door Oceanco nieuw aangeschafte werf in Zwijndrecht. Veel details zijn nog ongewis, maar zeker is dat Y721 van drie masten, drie dekken en een boegspriet voorzien zal worden.

“Een van de mooiste zeiljachten die er bestaat”

In het boek  Amazon Unbound van Brad Stone, waarvan een uittreksel werd gepubliceerd door Bloomberg, wordt het superjacht beschreven als “een van de mooiste zeiljachten die er bestaat”, met “verschillende dekken” en “drie enorme masten”. In het boek wordt ook gemeld dat ook een begeleidende ondersteuningsboot in aanbouw is, met een helikopterplatform. Wel zo leuk voor zijn vriendin Lauren Sanchez, die naast journalist ook helikopterpiloot is.

Ondanks dat diverse bronnen claimen dat het inderdaad Jeff Bezos is geweest die de aanvraag heeft ingediend, biedt Oceanco nog altijd geen verheldering. “Oceanco waardeert de privacy en vertrouwelijkheid van al onze klanten en potentiële klanten en geeft daarom geen commentaar op onze betrokkenheid of niet-betrokkenheid bij specifieke projecten,” aldus een woordvoerder van de werf uit.

Rotterdam Won’t Dismantle Bridge to Allow Jeff Bezos’ Superyacht Through

The Dutch city faced an uproar as it considered dismantling a section of a 95-year-old bridge. Now the boat’s builder has decided not to apply for a permit.

Jeff Bezos will not be able to sail a new, more than 400-foot-long superyacht through the waters of the Dutch city of Rotterdam anytime soon.

The port city faced an uproar months ago as it considered dismantling a section of a 95-year-old bridge to allow the Amazon founder’s yacht to pass. But now the boat’s builder, the Dutch company Oceanco, has decided to refrain from applying for a permit, according to a Rotterdam City Council member.

It was unclear how Mr. Bezos’ yacht would leave the area or whether Oceanco would finish the boat. The company did not respond to requests for comment on Wednesday and Thursday. An Amazon spokeswoman did not immediately return a request for comment.

The yacht was supposed to sail through the Koningshaven Bridge, known locally as “De Hef,” over the summer and was on track to become the largest sailing yacht in the world at 417 feet, according to the superyacht industry publication Boat International. The bridge does not have enough clearance for the yacht , which was being built in a nearby town.

Because Oceanco is no longer seeking an application, the middle part of the bridge will not be removed for now, according to a public letter from the councilman, Vincent Karremans . The dismantling process takes about a day, as does putting it back together, according to Peter van Druten, a spokesman for the city of Rotterdam.

De Hef opened in 1927 and was the first vertical lift bridge in the Netherlands, but it is no longer in use. It has been dismantled before — most recently in 2017 for a renovation, Mr. van Druten said. The bridge is “an icon for the city,” he said.

The full cost of the dismantling would have been covered by Oceanco, the city said, and the bridge would have immediately been restored afterward.

City officials told reporters in February that Rotterdam had agreed to briefly dismantle the bridge to allow Mr. Bezos’ yacht to go through. But after backlash, they walked back that statement and said a decision had not been made.

A Facebook event at the time invited residents of the city to throw eggs at the boat. “Dismantling De Hef for Jeff Bezos’s latest toy? Come throw eggs … !” the event’s organizer wrote in February.

Then last month, the Dutch newspaper Trouw reported that Oceanco had decided not to apply for the permit out of fear of vandalism and threats.

“That’s worrisome — the ship builder is just doing his job,” said Dieke van Groningen, a Rotterdam council member for VVD, the Dutch liberal party.

Responses so far were mixed. Some people applauded the fact that the city would not have to bend to the will of Mr. Bezos. Facebook posts by the Dutch public in response to the news included sentiments like: “Class! Keep your spine straight for such oligarchs,” and “Let him get that thing with his own rocket.”

“We’re happy it’s not happening,” said Marvin Biljoen, a councilman for GroenLinks, the Dutch Green Party. “The bridge is a national monument, which shouldn’t be altered too much. That you could still do that with money anyway bothers us.”

But others believed it would have been a good opportunity for the city.

“I talk to a lot of residents of Rotterdam,” Ms. van Groningen, the VVD councilwoman, said. “They’re incredibly proud that these kinds of ships sail through our city.”

Rotterdam is the biggest port in Europe and a main hub for shipbuilding, including superyachts.

“This is the Netherlands at its best,” Ms. van Groningen said. “It’s about the image of the port, and you should be proud of that.”

Jeff Bezos’s New Superyacht to Force Dismantling of Dutch Bridge

J eff Bezos’s massive new superyacht is nearing completion, but getting it to its owner will require taking out a bridge.

The 417-foot-long sailing yacht, code-named Y721, is being built by Alblasserdam, Netherlands-based Oceanco. For the boat to reach the ocean, it will have to pass through Rotterdam, and navigate a landmark steel bridge known as De Hef. A lift bridge, De Hef’s central span can be raised more than 130 feet into the air, but that’s still not high enough to accommodate the yacht’s three giant masts.

So the city has agreed to temporarily take apart the bridge’s central section this summer for Bezos’s yacht to pass through, according to Frances van Heijst, a Rotterdam spokeswoman. The NL Times reported the bridge plan earlier Wednesday.

The Y721 will be one of the largest sailing yachts ever built in the Netherlands, the unofficial capital of boat building for the very wealthy. Rotterdam council project leader Marcel Walravens defended the city’s decision to allow the bridge to be dismantled, telling local broadcaster Rijnmond it was the “only alternative” to complete what the municipality considers “a very important project” economically.

Oceanco, and not the city, will foot the cost of the bridge demolition, van Heijst said. It’s likely some of those costs will be passed on to Bezos, the world’s second-richest person with a net worth of $175.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

De Hef is considered an icon of Rotterdam’s industrial heritage as a shipbuilding hub, and news of its partial demolition has caused a stir among locals.

“This man has earned his money by structurally cutting staff, evading taxes, avoiding regulations and now we have to tear down our beautiful national monument?” Rotterdam politician Stephan Leewis wrote on Twitter. “That is really going a bridge too far.”

It’s not the first headache caused by Y721’s tall masts. The enormity of the yacht’s sails will make it unsafe to land a helicopter onboard, so Bezos has commissioned a support yacht equipped with a helipad to trail alongside.

Surging levels of personal wealth pushed superyacht sales to record levels last year. A total of 887 such ships were sold in 2021, a 77% jump from a year earlier and more than double the number in 2019, according to a report from maritime data firm VesselsValue. Boat builder Burgess reported more than 2 billion euros ($2.3 billion) in superyacht sales last year.

Rotterdam residents appear to be up in arms over a plan to temporarily dismantle the Koningshaven lift bridge, popularly called "De Hef."

It's not exactly smooth sailing these days in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam, where locals are voicing their objection to a plan that would temporarily dismantle a historic bridge to enable the passage of a record-breaking yacht reportedly owned by former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

In fact, some are already making plans — albeit in jest — for what they will do if the project comes to fruition: throw eggs at the yacht as it traverses the water under the Koningshaven Bridge, known locally as "De Hef."

Some 13,000 people are "interested" and nearly 4,000 have said they will attend a Facebook event titled "Throwing eggs at superyacht Jeff Bezos," which has been shared more than 1,000 times in the week since its creation.

"Calling all Rotterdammers, take a box of rotten eggs with you and let's throw them en masse at Jeff's superyacht when it sails through the Hef in Rotterdam," wrote organizer Pablo Strörmann.

He told the NL Times that the protest started as a joke among friends and has quickly gotten "way out of hand." (The English-language news site also notes that this isn't Strörmann's first campaign to go viral.)

The news of De Hef's potential disassembly, however brief, has clearly struck a chord with both locals and international observers.

It all started last week when Dutch broadcaster Rijnmond reported that the city appeared willing to grant a request to dismantle the decades-old steel bridge so that Bezos' yacht could pass through.

De Hef was built in 1927 as a railway bridge, with a midsection that can be lifted to allow ship traffic to pass underneath, according to The Washington Post . It was replaced by a tunnel and decommissioned in 1994, but was saved from demolition by public protests and later declared a national monument.

The ship's three masts are apparently too high for the bridge's roughly 130-foot clearance.

The sailing yacht in question was reportedly commissioned by the billionaire Amazon founder and is currently being built at the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, according to Boat International . It will consist of three masts with aluminum and steel construction and will measure more than 415 feet in length.

"Once delivered, not only will she become the world's largest sailing yacht but she will also hold the title for the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands," it added.

The waterway where the bridge sits is the only way the ship can get from the shipyard in Alblasserdam to the open seas, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation . So Oceanco asked Rotterdam officials to temporarily remove the middle section of the bridge.

City spokesperson Netty Kros told the CBC that "the applicant" would cover the costs of the project but did not clarify whether that refers to the yacht's owner, the shipbuilder or both. Bloomberg reports that Oceanco will foot the bill. NPR has reached out to Amazon and Oceanco to confirm these details.

The city appeared to agree to the arrangement last week, with municipal project leader Marcel Walravens telling Rijnmond that the project would proceed for logistical and economic reasons. He said an exact plan was being developed but estimated it would take about a week to prepare and another week to "put everything back in place."

"At the Koningenne Bridge, we can press a button, and it opens. That's not possible here because De Hef has a maximum height," Walravens said, according to a translation from the NL Times . "The only alternative is to take out the middle part."

That prompted an immediate backlash from locals, lawmakers and social media users, with the Rotterdam Historical Society pointing out that city officials had promised never to dismantle the bridge again after completing a major restoration in 2017.

Officials then walked back the reports, with Rotterdam's mayor telling a Dutch newspaper on Thursday that "no decision has yet been taken, not even an application for a permit," according to The Guardian .

He said the municipality would consider an application and assess the potential impacts, like whether the dismantling can be done without damaging the bridge and who would cover the costs.

Proponents of the plan say the project will bring more economic opportunities to the region, while critics say there's a double standard at play.

"Normally it's the other way around: If your ship doesn't fit under a bridge, you make it smaller," Strörmann told the NL Times. "But when you happen to be the richest person on Earth, you just ask a municipality to dismantle a monument. That's ridiculous."

With a net worth of more than $188 billion, Bezos is the third-richest person in the world behind Tesla founder Elon Musk and French businessman Bernard Arnault, according to Forbes' real-time list .

Hypothetically, if the project does come to pass, and locals do show up with eggs, just how hard of a moving target would the yacht be? The website Curbed set out to find out.

After examining several studies and making a few calculations, reporter Clio Chang says an egg would have to travel about 238 feet to hit the hull — "a difficult, but not impossible, feat."

Het nieuwe jacht van Jeff Bezos

Om precies te zijn: het is een superjacht van een half miljard, dat zo groot is dat er een ondersteunend jacht nodig is. Met een vermogen van 186 miljard ( BBI ) is dat natuurlijk maar een schijntje.

Het zou gaan om een jacht van 127 meter lang, 20 meter langer dat het model Black Pearl (foto), dat Oceano in 2018 bouwde. De driemaster wordt naar verluidt een van de mooiste zeiljachten ooit, maar veel details zijn nog niet bekend.

Het superjacht is volgens Bloomberg slechts een deel van de order. Ook zou Jeff Bezos namelijk een ondersteunend jacht hebben gekocht, met een helikopterplatform. Wel zo handig, te weten dat zijn nieuwe vriendin Lauren Sánchez helikopterpiloot is en ‘s werelds een na rijkste man zelf ook lessen volgt.

Oceanco zit gevestigd in Alblasserdam, waar de jachten worden gebouwd. De sales en marketing gebeurt vanuit Monaco. Volgens verschillende media is de nieuwe boot van Jeff Bezos een volledig nieuw model, die je nog niet op de website terugvindt.

We houden overigens nog even een slag om de arm. Niet dat Jeff Bezos het jacht niet kan betalen, maar er wordt vaker foutief gesuggereerd dat een bekende miljardair een nieuwe boot heeft aangeschaft. Daar kan Bill Gates over meepraten, die volgens The Guardian dit superjacht op waterstof had gekocht. Dat bleek dus niet zo te zijn. Ook kwaliteitsmedia zitten er wel eens naast.

'Jeff Bezos bouwt 's werelds grootste zeiljacht in Nederland'

Het geheimzinnige jacht van 127 meter lengte dat momenteel bij Oceanco in Alblasserdam gebouwd wordt is voor 's werelds rijkste man, Jeff Bezos. Dat beweert althans Brad Stone, de schrijver van Amazon Unbound, een boek dat over Bezos en zijn bedrijf Amazon gaat.

Project Y721, dat momenteel in aanbouw is bij Oceanco in Alblasserdam, op het punt waar de rivier de Noord en de A15 elkaar kruisen, is met geheimzinnigheid omhuld. Hoewel super- en megajachten normaal gesproken al met stijf gesloten kaken te maken hebben, is in dit geval de stilte nog doordringender. Oceanco vertelt helemaal niets over het project.

Het enige dat bekend is over het nieuwe superjacht is dat het een zeilschip wordt van 127 meter. Dankzij die lengte wordt het meteen het grootste megazeiljacht ter wereld. De Black Pearl , eveneens gebouwd bij Oceanco, verplaatst naar de tweede plek op de ranglijst van wie heeft de langste.

In het boek Amazon Unbound zegt de auteur dat het jacht gebouwd wordt voor Jeff Bezos. De overige details die naar voren komen zijn dat het " one of the finest sailing yachts in existence, [wordt]" met " several decks" en " three enormous masts ". In tegenstelling tot de Black Pearl wordt de Y721 een schoener.

Volgens de schrijver is intussen ook een ' support ship ' voor het jacht in aanbouw. Of dat jacht dan ook bij Oceanco wordt gebouwd is niet meteen duidelijk.

A historic Dutch bridge will be dismantled so that Jeff Bezos ’ giant superyacht can make its way out to sea.

The Amazon founder’s vessel will be the world’s largest sailing yacht at 417ft long, and its 40-metre high trio of masts is too tall to make it under Rotterdam’s Koningshaven bridge, according to Boat International .

The yacht’s builder, Oceanco, have asked the city to temporarily remove the bridge, which is known as De Hef dates from 1878 and was last renovated in 2017, and the company and billionaire have offered to pay for the work.

Marcel Walravens who managed the renovation project, told RTV that it was “not practical” to partially finish the vessel and complete construction elsewhere.

“If you carry out a big job somewhere, you want all your tools in that place. Otherwise you have to go back and forth constantly. In addition, this is such a large project that there are hardly any locations where this work is finished.”

And he added: “From an economic perspective and maintaining employment, the municipality considers this a very important project. Rotterdam has also been declared the maritime capital of Europe.

“Shipbuilding and activity within that sector are therefore an important pillar for the municipality.”

“As the plans look now, the preparation will take about a week. There are a lot of cables on De Hef, and as soon as you remove the first one, it no longer works.

“After that week, we remove the middle part, and with a bit of luck, we will have it back a day later. After that it will take another week to put everything back in place.”

The superyacht, which is known as Y721, was first spotted being rolled out of a shed at the shipbuilding yard in October 2021 and it features a black hull and white superstructure.

And not everyone is happy at Mr Bezos and his yacht being accommodated by the city.

“Employment is important, but there are limits to what you can and may do to our heritage,” Ton Wesselink, of the Rotterdam Historical Society told RTV.

The world’s largest sailing yacht is currently the Seacloud, which was built in 1931 in Germany and measures in at 359ft in length.

Jeff Bezos laat luxejacht bouwen door Nederlands bedrijf

Jeff Bezos, de rijkste man op aarde, heeft het Nederlandse Oceanco ingeschakeld om voor hem een jacht te bouwen met een lengte van 127 meter. Daar komt nog een kleiner schip met een helikopterplatform bij.

Dat schrijft Bloomberg dat zich baseert op passages uit het boek 'Amazon Unbound', van Brad Stone.

Jacht ontbrak nog

Hoewel schepen bij uitstek een speeltje zijn van de rijken der aarde had Bezos nog geen schip van zichzelf, maar verbleef hij wel op de jachten van rijke vrienden. Die kan hij straks op stand op de koffie vragen, want het driemastschip wordt naar verwachting 'een van de mooiste zeiljachten die er bestaan'.

Andere details over het jacht zijn niet bekend, zelfs niet onder kenners in de luxebotenwereld. Het tweede kleinere schip met helikopterplatform bezoekt Bezos ongetwijfeld met zijn vriendin Lauren Sanchez, die naast journalist ook helikopterpiloot is en vlieglessen aan haar vriend geeft.

Onduidelijk is wat de twee schepen die Bezos besteld heeft gaan kosten of hoe Oceanco uit Alblasserdam aan de opdracht komt. Het bedrijf wil zelfs niet bevestigen dat ze Bezos als klant heeft.

"Het is ons beleid om nooit iets te zeggen over onze klanten vanwege hun privacy", zegt een woordvoerder van het Nederlandse bedrijf tegen RTL Z. Zeker is wel dat Bezos diep in de buidel zal moeten tasten. In de regel kost een superjacht zeker een miljoen euro per strekkende meter, maar dat kan ook nog een stuk meer zijn.

Bezos heeft vanaf het najaar in ieder geval een stuk meer vrije tijd om van zijn schuitje te gaan genieten. Dan stopt hij namelijk als ceo van Amazon . Die baan 'neemt al je tijd in beslag', zei hij eerder. 

Overigens blijft hij nog wel in beeld bij het bedrijf dat hij zelf heeft opgericht. Bezos wordt executive chair of the board. Die functie is vergelijkbaar met een voorzitter van de raad van commissarissen.

We may have just gotten our first glimpse at Jeff Bezos' new superyacht. 

New photos and videos surfaced over the weekend of a 417-foot yacht rolling out of a shipyard in Zwijndrecht, Netherlands. According to yachting publication Boat International , the vessel is known only as Y721 and is being built by Oceanco, a Dutch shipbuilder known for producing some of the world's largest and most luxurious ships.

The massive vessel is still unfinished, but photos published by Boat International and Daily Mail show a ship with a black hull and multiple decks. The project will be completed in 2022 and will become the largest sailing yacht in the world, Boat International reports. 

A spokesperson for Oceanco did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, but the company told Boat International that it "values the privacy and confidentiality of all our clients and prospective clients and therefore does not comment on our involvement or non-involvement in specific projects."

Journalist Brad Stone was the first to report that Bezos had commissioned his own custom yacht. According to Stone's book, "Amazon Unbound," the Amazon founder commissioned a three-mast ship with several decks that's expected to be "one of the finest sailing yachts in existence." 

In addition to the ship, Bezos has reportedly commissioned a second, smaller, "support yacht" that will include its own helipad. Bezos' girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, is a helicopter pilot and Stone reported that Bezos has also taken flying lessons.

While massive yachts are often  an accessory of the mega-rich , Bezos, who is the second-richest person in the world with a fortune worth $193 billion , hasn't previously had a boat of his own. A viral photo in 2019 claimed Bezos was the owner of  a $400 million yacht known as the Flying Fox, but Amazon has denied that the ship belongs to Bezos.

Bezos does appear to be a fan of yacht travel, however. Throughout the summer of 2019 , he and Sanchez were spotted aboard multiple yachts belonging to their high-profile friends: first, entertainment mogul David Geffen's Rising Sun, and then fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg's schooner, Eos. And in February, Bezos and Sanchez were spotted aboard another yacht in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico .

Schitterend zeiljacht van Jeff Bezos kiest ruime sop (video)

Het door het Nederlandse Oceanco gebouwde zeilschip waarvoor Jeff Bezos naar verluidt $500 miljoen betaalde, heeft haar eerste nautische mijlen gemaakt. En uiteraard cirkelden de botenspotters daar met hun camera’s omheen.

Enfin, afgelopen week maakte het 127 meter lange schip, dat Bezos Koru zal dopen, op de Noordzee haar eerste proefvaart. Daarbij werden nog niet de zeilen gehesen, maar uit de beelden die Superyacht Times maakte valt al wel te concluderen dat het echt een plaatje is.

De Koru, een naam waarvoor Bezos inspiratie opdeed bij de Maori , is het langste schip dat ooit in Nederland werd gebouwd, en het op één na langste schip ter wereld dat zich door de wind kan laten voortstuwen. Ook het hulpschip, waarop bijvoorbeeld zijn helikopter kan landen, werd in Nederland besteld. Beelden daarvan hieronder.

The best pictures of Koru

In 2022, the 125.8-metre sailing yacht Koru made history when she hit the water at Oceanco ’s Alblasserdam facilities. Now successfully delivered, she is the flagship of the Oceanco fleet and the largest Dutch-built yacht in the world.

Koru unable to dock in Florida

Koru arrived at Port Everglades, Florida in November 2023 following a months-long Mediterranean cruise that included stopovers in Dubrovnik, Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Calabria (according to BOATPro ). The sailing yacht was too large to anchor in the nearby marina, which has a maximum capacity of 121.9 metres. She was photographed instead docking next to a 297-metre cruise ship named Rhapsody of the Seas .

Last summer, Koru was spotted in the French Riveria alongside her 75-metre support vessel Abeona . Delivered by Damen Yachting two months before the mothership, Abeona is equipped with a helipad and hangar for a D14 value helicopter– which is clearly being put to good use. Accommodation is for up to 45 people onboard Bezos' support vessel, including crew, guests and other specialist staff.

Koru and Abeona also travelled to Portofino in the summer of 2023, with both Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez sighted enjoying lunch and taking photographs while on board.

Throughout construction, it was difficult to get a glimpse of the details on board Koru ; but once handed over, all of her traditional features could be admired up close. As well as the intricate gold paintwork and scarlet bootstripe, the yacht also features an elaborate figurehead made of polished wood. The woman is wearing a necklace with a symbol in the pendant, which some have speculated could be the Māori symbol meaning "koru".

After delivery, the schooner spent some time enjoying the waters of Mallorca. The Balearic hotspot is a magnet for superyachts during the Mediterranean season, but Koru had the quiet anchorage largely to herself after leaving the Oceanco shipyard. Her classic lines could be appreciated in all of their glory against the backdrop of Palma Cathedral.

In April 2023. Koru was delivered and undertook her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Gibraltar. She then headed onwards to Palma, giving the world a first glimpse of her cascading aft decks, mighty masts and elaborate aft deck pool arrangement. She was flying solo in Mallorca, but was later joined by support vessel Abeona .

Following her successful sea trials in Rotterdam, Koru embarked on journey to Palma, Mallorca that involved an overnight anchorage in Gibraltar. The sailing yacht was sighted passing through the Strait of Gibraltar a second time on her cross-continental journey from the Mediterranean to the USA in November 2023.

Koru was spotted departing from Rotterdam in the early morning light of February 13 to begin sea trials. The 125.8-metre Oceanco set sail across the North Sea to put her performance to the test after hitting the water for the first time in August 2022. The traditional three-masted schooner yacht has a midnight blue hull, traditional canoe stern and the unique addition of a chair at the very tip of the bowsprit. Her name represents the idea of life’s perpetual movement and is a Māori word closely related to that of an unfurling leaf.

The yacht was seen for the first time in her final form on the dock in the Port of Rotterdam. Her trio of masts was stepped here to avoid having to dismantle any bridges to allow the Oceanco giant yacht to pass under. The maximum height of the bridge is 70 metres; the masts on Koru are thought to measure between 65 and 85 metres. The first images of Koru indicate the yacht will have plenty of features for her owner to enjoy, including an aft deck pool and a large, uncluttered sundeck.

The 125.8-metre yacht was moved from Oceanco’s primary facilities at the crack of dawn to enter the final stages of construction. The hull was transported via Dordrecht and Spijkenisse (Oude Maas), and her masts were transported separately via the slightly shorter Rotterdam Centre (Nieuwe Maas).

Before she hit the water, the hull of Koru was loaded onto a transport vessel and she made the journey through the Dutch canals for further construction work. The yacht was captured against the backdrop of the quaint Dutch countryside, revealing her classic-looking lines and long rows of windows.

As she was wheeled out of the shed into the light of day, yacht-spotters were able to get their first proper aerial shot of the yacht, without her masts.

When Oceanco completed the work on the hull, the yacht was rolled out of the shed to reveal a crisp navy hull and white superstructure. Koru ’s exterior design immediately drew a comparison to Lürssen’s 93-metre sailing yacht Eos , which was designed by US-based Langan Design . This was the world’s first sighting of the already iconic superyacht.

Jeff Bezos’s Superyacht Was Quietly Towed Out of a Dutch Shipyard After Local Pushback

A newly built superyacht reportedly owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was quietly removed from a shipyard in the Netherlands this week after an attempt failed to have a local historic bridge dismantled to make room for its passage.

The 417-foot-long vessel, called Y721, was towed from a shipyard in Alblasserdam, Netherlands to Rotterdam, located about 13 miles away, in the early morning of August 2, according to the German magazine Der Spiegel .

Dutch Yachting, a yacht fan club, posted a video on YouTube of Bezos’ yacht leaving the shipyard in the dead of night. The video has garnered more than 240,000 views.

Y721 has been under construction by Oceanco, a Dutch shipbuilding company, commissioned by Bezos, since 2018. The giant vessel is about half the length of the RMS Titanic and estimated to cost $500 million. Upon completion, it will be the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International .

Y721 became the center of controversy in February after Oceanco requested that the city of Rotterdam dismantle part of a historic bridge to allow Bezos’s yacht to pass through. The bridge was in the way of the ship’s only route to the sea and had a clearance too low for it to sail through.

The news caused a stir in the local community, because the bridge, officially called Koningshaven Bridge and locally known as De Hef, is a cherished landmark. Some local residents organized protests on social media, despite the Rotterdam government promising to rebuild the bridge back to its original form and Oceanco agreeing to pay for the operation.

Pressured by the pushback, Oceanco in late June decided not to apply for the relevant permit to dismantle the bridge, Bloomberg reported.

Hanco Bol, a Dutch Yachting member who shot the viral YouTube video, speculated that Oceanco chose to move the yacht in early morning hours to avoid public attention, he wrote in the YouTube video’s description section. He said the relocation started at about 1 a.m. on August 2 and the yacht departed at 3 a.m.

The vessel was towed without its masts, so it could have fit under the Koningshaven Bridge. But the ship took a route that was longer than necessary and avoided passing through the bridge and the Rotterdam city center.

Paus Franciscus heeft in het Vaticaan een ontmoeting gehad met Amazon-oprichter Jeff Bezos en zijn verloofde, Lauren Sánchez, vicevoorzitter van het Bezos Earth Fund. Tijdens de ontmoeting hebben ze over klimaatverandering gesproken.

Sánchez plaatste foto’s van de ontmoeting in de Domus Sanctae Marthae, de residentie waar paus Franciscus woont, in een Instagram post van 15 augustus, en zei dat de “wijsheid, warmte en humor van de paus diep ontroerend waren”.

“Hij herinnerde ons eraan het leven niet te serieus te nemen, een eenvoudige maar krachtige herinnering om lichtheid in ons hart te houden”, schreef ze.

De ontmoeting stond niet op de officiële agenda van de paus en werd ook niet bekendgemaakt via de mediakanalen van het Vaticaan.

Gedeelde passie

Sánchez schreef dat de drie de “dringende noodzaak voor klimaatactie” bespraken, een passie die zij zei te delen met de paus.

Paus Franciscus’ “geloof in het vinden van schoonheid en betekenis in alles wat we doen resoneerde diep met mij”, schreef ze op Instagram, eraan toevoegend: “Ik vind het geweldig dat hij priesters aanmoedigt om poëzie en literatuur te lezen om verbonden te blijven met de menselijke geest.”

“Dankbaar voor deze ongelooflijke zegening en de zachte wijsheid die hij met ons deelde.”

Miljardeninvesteringen

In maart kondigde Sánchez aan dat het Bezos Earth Fund 60 miljoen dollar zou investeren in centra die zich richten op biofabricage en het creëren van alternatieve eiwitten. Bezos heeft toegezegd om via het fonds tien miljard dollar te besteden aan het bestrijden van klimaatverandering.

Volgens Forbes is Bezos de op één na rijkste man ter wereld met een nettowaarde van zo’n 177 miljard euro.
