Here's How the Yacht in the Overboard Remake Compares to Goldie Hawn's Original

The film Overboard is about the haves and the have-nots—or, in this case, the haves and the have-yachts. The original 1987 film, which stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell , and the 2018 remake of the same name—which stars Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris and was released just this month—feature childish yacht owners (Hawn and Derbez, respectively) who have amnesia and are, then, reestablished in less elite but comedic existences. For each of the Overboard films, ultra-luxe boats weren't only a crucial part of the setting—they were also key in demonstrating the characters’ status, and characters’ dedication to status symbols.

In Overboard (1987), the 130-foot Yecats from Kong & Halvorsen in Glenorie, Australia (which was renamed the Attessa in 1992 and the Huntress in 1998), was featured as the S.S. Immaculata. (The same boat was also featured in 1993's Indecent Proposal, which stars Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore.) The interior decoration was characteristic of the era: The bold colors and excessive design complemented Hawn's character's profligate outfits. Brent Thomas, the production designer for Overboard (2018), describes: “There was definitely a campy vibe to it and it was incredibly ’80s, both in palette and in shapes and tones. It worked very well, but it was gauche and over the top and it assaulted your senses a little bit. We wanted to make our yacht in the remake a little more sophisticated and elegant and cleaner and crisper and more pristine and grounded, perhaps. A sort of sleek, smooth, gentleman’s fantasy but with elegance and taste as opposed to the one in the original.”

Thomas and his team chose the 164-foot Aspen Alternative for Derbez’s Birthday Present —a 2010 custom creation from Trinity Yachts in Gulfport, Mississippi, that he sourced from Saint Maarten in the Caribbean after a lengthy international search. (In case anyone gets a case of yacht envy, the Aspen Alternative is currently on the market for $18.9 million.) Thomas credits the boat’s aesthetic—its “old-world elegance” with exotic sapele-wood details—as the reason for the decision.

The Aspen Alternative’s exteriors and main salon were featured in the film, but the interiors were constructed in Vancouver, Canada. In Overboard (1987), there’s a focus on the estate room’s closets, with Hawn exclaiming at one point, “Well, the entire civilized world knows that all closets are made of cedar!” (Cedar can be more costly and is often considered more prestigious, as it repels moths and moisture.) For this reason, Thomas says he introduced one in the remake, too: “As a little shout-out to Goldie’s closet, I gave Eugenio a fabulous walk-in closet. It looked like a Hugo Boss store with shelves of shirts and shoes. It was lit and beautifully laid out. Again, as a wink and a nod, we gave him a place for a bunch of shoes as well.”

Overboard (1987) contrasts with the remake, but it was the similarities between Hawn and Faris that were especially memorable for Thomas: “Every now and again, I went, ‘Oh my God, Anna looks and sounds just like Goldie!’ There was one moment with her lying back on the area in the bow of the boat. She said something like, “Boy, I could really get used to this lifestyle.’ It was a sunny day where you could lay back and relax, and it felt like the world was your oyster," remembers Thomas fondly. "I smiled and said, 'I get it. I could dig this lifestyle, too.'"

It’s the 332-foot Attessa IV, belonging to industrialist billionaire Dennis Washington .

He’s the Montana-based founder of the Washington Companies and a long-time San Diego visitor. His $150 million yacht, described as “one of the most exquisite” by Forbes.com, has been a frequent sight at the Kona Kai Marina on Shelter Island.

On June 4, however, the yacht was all decked out for a party. Washington’s invitees celebrated the 90th birthday of Bill McComas , a part-time resident of Rancho Santa Fe. McComas is one of the founders of IGT ( International Gaming Technologies), a firm dominating the poker video gaming machine market.

In the interest of trivial pursuit, Washington’s predecessor Attessa yacht, although it bore a different name, was used the 1987 film “Overboard” starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell . That Attessa also appeared in the 1993 movie “Indecent Proposal” with Robert Redford and Demi Moore.

Helping hand: Sharon LeeMaster , the voice for numerous local not-for-profit organizations, fell and broke her wrist the other evening. Despite her pain, she kept an appointment the following morning to deliver donated Padres ballgame tickets to the San Diego Madres for its fundraiser.

While there, a kindly member of the Madres volunteered to help her while she is on the mend. “Could I come by and read to you, or do whatever you need?” queried Dorothy Yonimitsu .

The age of the lady so generously offering her services? 98.

Busy as a bell: The local Spirit of Liberty Foundation’s America’s Freedom Bell traveled to the World War II monument in Washington, D.C., for Memorial Day. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter rang the huge bronze bell, which resembles the Liberty Bell, as did thousands of other attendees.

After the ceremony, the bell rode on a float in the Memorial Day parade then was bundled up and flown to France for the international observance of D-Day in Normandy on June 5 and 6.

The bell was originally cast on June 6, 2013. It bears the symbols of all the branches of the Armed Forces and contains metal from the Twin Towers destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Good sports: Soccer player Kraig Chiles was honored as San Diego’s 2016 “Sports Man of the Year” at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. Stealing some of the San Diego Sockers star’s spotlight, however, was his “date” at the Taste 4 Sports event — Chiles’ 2-year-old daughter.

Perennial attendee Bill Walton was unable to be at the celebration this year but his presence was felt nonetheless — a dinner with the hoops star was auctioned for more than $400.

The 50m/164ft motor yacht ‘Aspen Alternative’ from Trinity Yachts can now be seen on the big screen after starring in the remake of the 1987 movie Overboard as superyacht ‘Birthday Present’.

Released in US cinemas today (4 May), the new Overboard is based on the original film starring Goldie Hawn as Joanna, a snobby heiress who hires a carpenter named Dean, played by Kurt Russell, to remodel a closet on board her superyacht.  

Unhappy with his work, Joanna ends up getting into a row with Dean and throwing him overboard. Later that night, however, she falls overboard herself and ends up in hospital with amnesia. Taking revenge, Dean convinces Joanna she is his wife and the mother of his four badly behaved children.  

The 2018 Overboard sees a gender reversal. Anna Faris plays Kate, a single, working-class mum who convinces a spoiled playboy (Eugenio Derbez) they are married when he winds up with amnesia after falling off his motor yacht .

Taking on the superyacht role from the 44m/144ft HUNTRESS, which starred in the original, luxury yacht Aspen Alternative was chartered in British Columbia last summer for 19 days of filming.

The producers sought out as large, modern and luxurious a yacht as possible, preferably with a Jacuzzi, and fulfilling these requirements was the 2010 Trinity Yachts build.

Hi, I was wondering if you could answer another question on the yacht from "Overboard"..…..... In the movie, the yacht hits it's horn , what is the name of that horn? Also heard the same horn periodically throughout the movie "the watcher". Looking to purchase that type of horn possibly. Thanks for the help!

It turns out that I was correct. The first yacht to be named Attessa became yet another one of Washington's rebuild projects. After purchasing the 130ft Yecats built by Kong & Halvorsen in 1984, Washington lengthened the yacht to 142ft and renamed it to Attessa. The yacht later appeared in the movie " Indecent Proposal ". It was then sold to George Argyros and renamed to Huntress before catching fire and sinking off the coast of Greece in 1998*. *Fire breaks out in engine room of US yacht, no injuries A fire broke out early today in the engine-room of the US yacht "Huntress" while it was sailing in international waters 70 nautical miles west of Cephalonia. The operations centre of the Merchant Marine Ministry immediately notified all vessels sailing in the region, which sped to the yacht's assistance. The "Huntress" was eventually spotted by a US naval vessel which picked up the crew and passengers of the yacht - in all eight US citizens - none of whom were hurt. The crew and passengers were to be taken to Corfu. Teatralny Bridge

Part of a triptych of elegant cast-iron bridges that cross the point where the Griboedov Canal flows out of the Moika River next to Konyushennaya Ploshchad and the Church on the Spilled Blood, Teatralny Bridge takes its name from the Free Russian Theatre, which stood nearby at the end of the 18 th century. Like its sister Maly Konyushenny Bridge, the Teatralny Bridge was designed by Adam and Traitteur, and features extremely ornate railings, panels and lampposts, all heavily decorated with gilt.
