a carter 37 from the mid 70s for cruising and possibly cruising.
If any body out there has any experience of sailing these I would love to hear your thoughts of there pluses and minuses. Also does anyone know why most of the information in can find is in French when the seem to be built in .

Many thanks for your thoughts

it, it may not spring back up too fast. That book by Marchaj, "Sail Performance," he definitely didn't have much to say in the positive about IOR designs for bluewater/cruising purposes. Personally I would still check it out, but with the awareness of the possible shortcomings.

Boat: Alloy Peterson 40
.

The carter 37 was based on Ydra, the one tonner that did very well in the 73 one ton cup. So she obviously can sail very well.

She was near the end of an era, S&S and Carter were about to slowly give way to the newer breed of lighter and more extreme designs from the likes of , Holand and Frers. So in that regard she is pretty untained by the worst of the IOR that really started to generate some extreme and unwholesome designs in the 80's, as the explotaitions pioneered in the late 70's by the 1/4 and 1/2 tonners moved upwards into the bigger . So in this she is probably closer in ancestory to say the S&S 34 than the later IOR designs. Anyway, these boats are pretty stiff, they carry sail well and the 55% ballast ratio is high even for the type, It should go to windward very well, even by modern standards. Downwind they can be twitchy at higher speeds. Slow them down a bit, just below and they behave fine, though the roll can still be pretty wild at times. The on the carter looks a touch small?

The traditional big lowcut genoas are a nuisance. I found a non overlapping worked fine for me, but the carter has a lower SA/disp and might need the for in the light. A 120-130% high cut on a roller might be a good compromise, prehaps with a removable solent or a staysail for stronger winds.

They are thoughbread sailing machines, rewarding to sail, not really the best for motoring. From the look of the design, and the specs they look like they should be safe enough in a blow.

Jim and Ann sailed a similar design for many years and many miles, also look at Web Chiles boats Resurgam, and Hawke of Tuonela. for examples of what an old IOR can do in the right hands.

Boat: Carter 35 Offshore 35ft
. If it still has a rig and you may have to spend a little to make it easier and more practical for short handed sailing. Snowpetrel pretty much sums it up well.
It's a little because there are quite a lot Carter boats around but not to many people have heard of him so the boats sell for less. There were some well known designers that worked out of his office as well.
There is a 33 going around the world solo right now and a Facebook owners group, Carter owners are a pretty happy bunch and trust their vessels to get them home . 😆

Boat: a sailing boat
(look at her ballast ratio and it is supposed to be lead).

If built in Greece then build quality may be an issue. Have a very thorough .

A guy here who has one has plenty of issues with the lamination just ahead of the ballast fin - every time he touches something hard, there is some amt of damage done. Perhaps their lamination is a bit delicate in that part. Or maybe he has a lemon.

But it really well - fast and points well too.

Cheers,
b.

Review of Carter 37

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

Unknown keel type

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.92 - 2.02 meter (6.30 - 6.60 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Perkins diesel engine at 50 hp (37 kW).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Carter 37 is about 281 kg/cm, alternatively 1575 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 281 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1575 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Dear all, Happy owner of one Carter 37 since 1998, I'm pleased to join you. You'll find enclosed the complete lines used for building one half hull. Is someone aware if Dick Carter is still alive ? He should be happy to know that I won last 28th April "le Tour de Belle Ile" with some X-362, X-442, IMS 38, behind me ! Kind Regards. Hi, I also have a Carter 37. I'm her 2nd owner, must be 17 years now. Great boat, still competitive under IOR rating 0.949, based East Coast UK. She has a steel beam which runs across the boat connecting to the keel bolts & chain plates. All hidden away forward to the main bulkhead. Do you know if this is standard construction or a later modification? Regards, Bob.
Carter 37 -steel beam Hi Bob ! Thanks for your message. Sorry, but I've never heard about this steel beam installed on Carter 37. Perhaps yours should meet weakness on hull. I will search on french sail-magazine and will come back to you. No news about Dick Carter ? Regards

Guys...... Honestly, contact Yves-Marie Tanton for construction details etc on the Carter boats, Yves was chief designer in the Carter office.
Thanks very much for the replies, I've no pictures of the steel beam I would need to take some of the interior out to take photos. I think that Dick Carter may have passed away in 2007, I can't remember where I heard that so possibly not fact. Mustang 6060, your boat looks great, I seem to be having a problem attaching a photo of mine....
Carter 37 - steel beam Hi Bob, As promised, please find attached two 1973 articles. I'm sorry the language is French, but it's now easy to translate on the web. In the "construction" part no mention of steel beam. No more information in the second document from Carter-Offshore, importer from Olympics Yards in Greece. The building was under control of Lloyd's Register of shipping. We can read that 6 longitudinal Omegas in fiber glass filled with polyurethane foam make the strength of the hull. Another detail IRC rating PS : my TCC is 0.936. Regards, Phil. View attachment construction Carter-37.pdf View attachment construction010001.pdf
Hi Phil, I had always thought that information on the 37 was not available, thanks for sending it over, our french is not good but adequate to translate. I have not met many other owners (maybe this is not relevant to this forum) We raced against Irish Mist years ago in Ireland, theres a couple of 37's in Holland, also came across one in Spain. Not that long ago, 2006, the Newport Bermuda race was won by a 37 from the States, I met her navigator at the RORC before the 2007 Fastnet. Maybe you have a furling headsail to get down to 0.936? Our boat is called Tigo IV. Regards, Bob.
Hi Bob, Your TIGO IV looks great with pretty sails! Irish mist is still running? I've always dreamed to meet her! Before to buy my Mustang ex-Obsession (serial n°13 built in 1972 in Greece, fitted in 1999 with a furling headsail), I was hesitating with one Tina, the other Carter's good looking plan from Rabbit, winner in Fastnet 65 (Dick was 33). I think there are less than 15 Carter-37 in France (7-8 in Brittany where I sail) but it's not easy to sail together. I've read that Dick was working in a lighthouse near Boston (Nahant, USA) & retired in UK. But probably Yves Marie Tanton knows more about him & your steel-beam... Regards Phil.

Seller's Description

Arrow is a safe, reliable, well maintained, performance, live aboard cruising vessel and she is Priced to sell. Many people say, “Boats just are not build like they used to be”. Our Arrow, a 1973 Carter 37, is a true testament to this statement. Built in the Olympic Shipyard in Greece, Arrow has a hand laid fiberglass hull, skeg hung rudder, and a large solid fin keel. Arrow is sea worthy, has classic styling, and a fast hull shape. We love Arrow. We bought her in Everett, Wa in 2014. We have cared for, updated, equipped, and sailed her over 5000 miles since 2014. We are only selling because we are a family of four and two of our four, while quite small in 2014 when we purchase Arrow, cannot be described that way in 2023. We had to upsize. We sailed her for years in the Salish Sea preparing her for a distant voyage including coastal and offshore sailing. We left the Puget Sound in 2018 and sailed as far south as Panama over several years. The cruising grounds here are incredible and a perfect place to begin a new adventure. Please contact us with any questions. We are available to show her any time. Presently, Arrow is on the hard. She has fresh brightwork, hull has been buffed and waxed, fresh paint applied, new starter battery and impellor installed. All her systems have been fully checked, serviced, and run over the last month. Zincs replaced. She is ready to splash and is the best looking boat in the yard….if I must say so myself.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Production version of 1973 IOR One Ton Cup winner, ‘YDRA’. (1 ton was 27.5’, IOR MkIII) Drawing shown here is of the racing version. (from Carter Offshore flyer - courtesy of Mike Davies) More popular was another version with an extended wedge shaped coach roof and fitted out interior. At least one other Carter One ton design was introduced and went into production several years later from an American builder. (CARTER 36 OR TEXAS ONE TON?)

Sloops are a type of monohull sailing boat whose rigging consists of a single mast - like cutters and catboats - and two sails : a mainsail and a single headsail (depending on its shape, this can be a jib, genoa or spinnaker). If there are 2 masts on a sailboat, then it's a ketch, a schooner or a yawl. Sloop rigging is the most common rig on the majority of modern yachts, representing 95% of current production. This rigging is the easiest to use (not so many sails and ropes) and is cheaper to maintain.

There are two types of sloop:

  • Bermuda-rigged sloops (or marconi sloops): these are sloops with a sail on their mast and a headsail on their single forestay. This type of sloop is very efficient for upwind sailing;
  • Gaff-rigged sloops: these are sloops with two sails on their mast, one of which is triangular 'the gaff topsail' and the other is quadrangular.

The uses of sloops

Depending on the height and size of the rigging, sloops can be adapted for all types of sailing such as a cruising sloop for leisure and exploration sailing or a racing sloop for regattas or ocean racing.

Sloops are always a safe bet for any sailing enthusiast . Band of Boats has a selection of used sloops among its ads.

History of the sloop

Sloop comes from the Dutch word sloep meaning rowboat in English. The French form is sloup which was gradually gave way to sloop. From their first appearance during the Middle Ages right up until the First World War, sloops of 5 to 8 metres were used as tender boats for all tall ships. Then, equipped with some extra canvas and considerably reinforced, they became swift and manoeuvrable fishing boats. Finally, little by little, thanks to their easy handling, sloops evolved into the ideal boats for pleasure boating or racing .
