New Yacht: Riva 88 Folgore
- By Patrick Sciacca
- Updated: November 24, 2020
When Riva launched the 66 Ribelle about two years ago, it introduced yachting enthusiasts to its Sportfly line, which combines a performance focus with the lines of an express cruiser and the function of a flybridge. The Italian shipyard takes that idea to new lengths with its Sportfly-range flagship 88 Folgore, which means “lightning bolt” in Italian. It’s a clever design that maintains a relatively low profile. It’s a look that should appeal to cruisers and speed fans alike. Riva says the yacht’s sporty aesthetic is partially inspired by automotive designs. It is also the result of a collaboration among Officina Italiana Design, the builder’s product strategy committee led by Piero Ferrari, and the Ferretti Group engineering department.
On the performance side of the equation, the 88 Folgore has a warped-hull form with 13 degrees of transom deadrise. Standard power is twin 2,435 hp MTU 16V 2000 M96s. Twin 2,638 hp MTU 16V M96Ls are optional. With standard power, Riva reports a 30-knot cruise speed and a 36-knot top hop. The bigger diesels reportedly bump up cruise speed to 32 knots with a 38-knot top hop. Range at cruising speed is 340 nautical miles or 350 nautical miles, respectively.
Maximizing the yacht’s outside real estate, Riva created multiple alfresco social zones. Starting at the foredeck, there’s a sun pad. Abaft the sun pad is a U-shaped lounge. The flybridge has another sun pad positioned far aft on centerline. A dining table with U-shaped seating is on centerline in the 236-square-foot cockpit. A bar with two stools, located forward and to starboard, is optional. And then there is the nearly 65-square-foot beach club. The swim platform can also be lowered to launch and retrieve a tender.
Inside, the floor plan is open from the cockpit doors to the two-seat helm that’s forward and to starboard. There is formal dining for eight to port. Cut-down bulwarks amidships provide ocean views out the glass superstructure when dining.
Accommodations on the 88 Folgore include a forepeak VIP stateroom, two double-berth guest staterooms abaft it to port and starboard, and a full-beam master stateroom amidships. The master has three layout options, including head and walk-in closet placement as well as a desk/vanity area.

Launch of Riva 88’ Folgore: just back from a journey into the future.
The new Riva masterpiece made its first dip in the sea at the La Spezia shipyard. Symbol of strength and innovation, she is the first new model to be launched by the Shipyard in 2020. La Spezia, 26th of May 2020 – Splendid and dazzling as its name implies, Riva 88’ Folgore immediately won the hearts and minds of those who saw it cut through the waves. The most eagerly awaited vessel by Riva enthusiasts was launched on Monday, 25th May in La Spezia, where the production facility dedicated to the 76-to-110-foot models is based. It is the first launch of a new Riva model at the time of Covid-19 and celebrates the non-stop activity of all shipyards, confirming Ferretti Group in its role as a tenacious and solid builder of dreams and emotions. “Riva 88’ Folgore looks like a vessel just back from a journey into the future: she is a dazzling flash of style, she is strength, she is performance, she is innovation.” - Commented Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group. “The launch of the first new model in 2020 represents a new Renaissance for the Ferretti Group, which restarts from Riva, brand becoming more and more a contemporary myth, the essence of Made in Italy and a tangible sign of a Country that starts again." Riva 88’ Folgore, the project of which was presented in January, perfectly complied with the deadline set for the construction time. The new exterior design philosophy displays lines and elements inspired by the automotive world, combining luxury and sportiness. In a happy balance between past and present, it combines the use of innovative materials like carbon with traditional stylistic elements such as mahogany inlays and steel decorations. In the perspective of a design proposal that combines aesthetics and functionality, Riva 88’ Folgore offers the owner a completely reconceived stern concept, with the garage door that swings open and can be positioned in two ways: parallel to the waterline, to take advantage of a 6m²² beach club, and immersed, to allow the launch and landing of the tender. The cockpit, on the other hand, is a large space of 22 m² that features a huge sofa area with table and also a bar unit with electrically opening marble top. Another interesting element of style is the glass hardtop located on the superstructure, which opens up and can be tilted toward both the stern and bow, to let in fresh air during navigation or when at anchor. The interiors have also been extensively renewed in style, created using precious materials such as wood, steel, marble and glass. They feature a number of particulars, including the option of three different layouts for the master cabin. The sleeping area is completed by a VIP cabin at the bow and two double cabins, each with its own bathroom. The area reserved to the galley remains separate, with a dedicated entrance to guarantee maximum service privacy. Like all the Riva masterpieces of recent history, the 88’ Folgore is the result of the collaboration between Officina Italiana Design, the studio founded by Mauro Micheli along with Sergio Beretta, the Product Strategy Committee headed by engineer Piero Ferrari, and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department.

What We Know So Far About the Missing Victims in the Sicily Yacht Sinking
F our British passengers and two Americans, including a prominent New York City attorney and his wife, remain missing after the Aug. 19 yacht sinking
First responders are still looking for six people who remain unaccounted for one day after the superyacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily following a major storm.
Among those unaccounted for include four British passengers and two Americans, CNN , The Independent and Sky News reported .
Chairman of Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy were aboard the 183-foot yacht when the vessel, carrying 22 people, began taking on water during the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 19.
Related: Tech Tycoon Mike Lynch and Daughter Among Missing After Luxury Yacht Sinks Off Sicilian Coast
London-based insurance company Hiscox — of which Bloomer is also chairman — issued a statement to PEOPLE on Aug. 20 regarding the tragedy.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation," Chief Executive Aki Hussain said.
Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, are also missing following the incident. Hannah's school in west London said in a statement, per The Guardian , that they were "all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.”
A source close to the survivors tells PEOPLE that the group was "celebrating Lynch's acquittal" following a lengthy legal saga that dated back to the 2011 sale of Autonomy, a business software company Lynch founded, to Hewlett Packard.
The man known as the "British Bill Gates" had been mired in legal issues since 2018, when he was indicted on several counts of securities fraud and conspiracy by federal prosecutors in California.
The trial didn’t begin until earlier this year, the BBC reported, because Lynch fought extradition to the United States for years following his indictment.
Lynch, who was facing 15 felony charges, was acquitted on all counts in June, the outlets reported.
New York City attorney Christopher Morvillo — who was on board the yacht with his wife Neda — was among those who worked on the case.
In a post on LinkedIn penned in June, the lawyer wrote that usually he didn't share personal wins on social media.
"I have never posted on LinkedIn before. Not sure why," Morvillo wrote. "The answer must lie somewhere between a fear of social media, an ignorance of the mysteries of this platform, and a lack of something meaningful to say. But, following the jury's swift exoneration of our client, Mike Lynch, and his colleague, Steven Chamberlain, last week in San Francisco, I finally have something to say that I would like others to hear."
Previous to his work at Clifford Chance, Morvillo was an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York who worked on the criminal investigation arising out of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, according to his biography on the Clifford Chance website .
Neda is a New York City jewelry designer who has been making hand-crafted pieces for over 20 years, according to her company’s website .
Chris and Neda are the parents of two daughters, Sabrina and Sophia.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was one of 15 people saved out of a total of 22 who were originally aboard the Bayesian , the Italian coast guard and local sources said. Eight of the rescued were taken to local hospitals.

The body of the yacht's chef, identified by Reuters as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas, was found near the vessel on Aug. 19.
Thomas was an inspiration to young Black children who wanted to get into the yachting world, his friend Eli Fuller told the BBC.
"The kids would see all these white people working on yachts," Fuller added. "For them to see an Antiguan man travelling all over the world - it was important for our community."

The interior and exterior were both designed to maximize the available space, but the outdoor areas are the key focus and aim to connect seafarers with their surroundings. Protected by a carbon-fiber hard top with glass panels, the 430-square-foot flybridge sports a lounge area with a dinette and bar in the center, a sunbathing area forward, and another lounge aft.
Below, the sprawling stern beach club is equipped with two large bulwarks that can swing down to create lateral terraces and provide nearly 10 feet of extra room. Forward of the beach club lies a 380-square-foot raised cockpit with ocean-facing sofas, while underneath sits a garage that can store a jet tender of up to 11 feet and a Seabob.
The living quarters center around a generous main deck salon with a cockpit-level living space and a panoramic dining area. The galley is also located on the main deck and connects to the helm station and the forward lounge. It can be closed off from the dining area for more privacy or opened up to create a sense of flow. The lower deck is outfitted with three en suite guest cabins and one full-beam owner’s suite that can collectively sleep up to eight guests. The two crew cabins sit amidships and can be accessed via a discreet walkway.

About the Riva shipyard
The renowned Italian Riva shipyard is known for the elegance and speed of their yachts. The legendary brand is synonymous with European savoir-faire and timeless design. It’s no coincidence that almost every James Bond movie features Riva yachts, probably most infamously in Casino Royale, where Daniel Craig and Eva Greene cruise into Venice onboard a Riva Spirit 54. This spirit of excellence is expressed in every Riva yacht for sale on the market today.
Are you looking for a Riva yacht for sale? Contact a broker today, or continue reading to discover why Riva boats are among the most sought-after in today’s superyacht market.
The Riva Legend: an Italian Success Story of Craftsmanship and Engineering
The history of the esteemed Italian Riva shipyard dates back to 1842, when young Pietro Riva started making a name for himself, restoring yachts damaged by a storm on Lake Iseo, Italy, like no other. He continued to open the Riva shipyard in Sarnico, where he started developing the first Riva models, earning Riva yachts an excellent reputation. His son Ernesto Riva then continued his father’s legacy by introducing the first Riva yachts powered by internal combustion engines.
Today, the Riva brand is one of the world’s most seemed and prestigious yacht builders, perfectly combining elegance and speed.
Exclusive Italian elegance and design
Since the Riva shipyard was acquired by the Ferretti Group in 2000, the brand and its reputation have only grown. Another outstanding feature of every Riva yacht for sale is expressed in the builder’s exclusive partnership with Mauro Micheli. Micheli, alongside Sergio Beretta, is the founder of Officina Italiana Design and has an exclusive design partnership with the Riva shipyard.
The Riva Yacht Range
The Riva range expresses the shipyard’s commitment to revolutionary engineering, reliability, and performance throughout all models. Currently, Riva is producing a range of 19 different yacht models.
Riva Open Model Range
The Riva Dolceriva, Riva Aquariva, Riva Bahamas Super, and Riva Rivamare are just some of the builder’s open yacht models. The open model range consists of motor yachts between 23ft and 85 ft (7-26m) and is the epitome of European sport boats.
Riva Sportfly Range
The Sportfly yacht range combines the speed of the open model range and the comfort of the flybridge range. The Riva 66 Ribelle, Riva 76 Perseo Super, and Riva 88 Folgore range from 65ft to 88ft (20 to 27m) and combine the best of both worlds.
Riva Flybridge Range
Riva’s flybridge line ranges from 82ft to 108ft (25 to 33m) and includes the iconic Riva 110 Dolce Vita model. All flybridge yachts are designed with the utmost comfort and elegance in mind while still impressing with great cruising speeds.
Riva Superyacht Range
The Riva superyacht range includes three catalog models that truly express that yacht’s commitment to elegance and forward-thinking engineering. The Riva 130 Belissima, Riva 50 Metri (264ft), and Riva 54 Metri (177ft) are the epitome of European yacht building and feature the brand’s signature design throughout.
Custom Riva Motor Yachts
In addition to their impressive model range, Riva has built numerous custom luxury yachts. Famous custom Riva yachts are 95.8ft (29.2m) Ruzarija, 85.3 (26m) BLACK PEARL AJJACIO, and 264ft (50m) RACE.
Why buy a Riva yacht for sale?
There are many reasons why you would want to buy a Riva yacht. Some of the most outstanding ones are:
Engineering & Speed
From day one onwards, all yachts from the esteemed Riva shipyard are crafted with perfect engineering in mind, reaching up to 45 knots.
Elegance & Design
A Riva’s iconic lines are recognizable from far away, and the elegance of Mauro Micheli’s design translates into the very last detail of every Riva yacht’s design.
Iconic Shipbuilding Heritage
Pietro Riva, Ernesto Riva, and most recently, Serafino Riva and Carlo Riva have truly translated their Italian heritage into the Riva brand. The long family-owned shipyard has stayed true to its roots and is the epitome of European luxury.
Wide Range of Models
The wide model range from 23ft to over 177ft (7m to over 50m) allows owners to grow with the brand and have a yacht that fits every need. While a Riva Aquariva is the perfect model to cruise into Venice like James Bond, the Riva Bellissima is the ideal yacht for a cruise along the Italian Riviera.

Opening Ceremony Misses the Boat
The Paris Games began with a new look and sparkled with Celine Dion. But the show suffered from bloat similar to TV’s other spectacles.

Follow live updates of the women’s gymnastics qualifying at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
About six hours before Celine Dion gutted out the final number of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, the streaming service Peacock emailed a promo for its coverage with the headline, “We’ll all be crying by the end of this.” So maybe they knew more than they were letting on.
The homestretch of the marathon four-hour broadcast, when the celebrating athletes and dance extravaganzas and speeches were out of the way, had some starkly lovely images and moving moments: the speedboat carrying former champions up the Seine in the dark (like a real-life echo of Leos Carax’s great water-skiing scene in “Les Amants du Pont-Neuf”). The grand scale and dramatic lighting of the Louvre as the torch was carried, like a firefly’s flame, through its courtyards. The torch coming to the hand of a 100-year-old French cyclist, steady in his wheelchair, and Dion defying her illness to belt out “Hymne à l’Amour” on the Eiffel Tower.
But it took endurance to get there — for the athletes, performers and spectators drenched by the summer rain, and for the viewers at home watching the ceremony as it was conceived by the French organizers and packaged by NBC and Peacock.
The decision to abandon the event’s traditional format — the long, formal parade of athletes marching into a stadium — for a waterborne procession along the Seine intercut with performances had a twofold effect. It turned the ceremony into something bigger, more various and more intermittently entertaining. But it also turned it into something more ordinary — just another bloated made-for-TV spectacle, like a halftime show or awards show or holiday parade that exists to promote and perpetuate itself.
Those spectacles can be fun, of course, and the traditional Olympics opening ceremony could feel dull and interminable. But it was not quite like anything else, and it played a key part in making the Games feel special.
As the boats ferrying the athletes moved along the Seine, what stood out was what was missing. The great mass of athletes in one place, moving in a continuous tide. The chaotic palette of national costumes, the different marching styles, the proud flag bearers. Few events more effectively combined the monumental and the individual.
Everything about Friday’s ceremony and broadcast worked to diminish the athletes. Sitting in cheering clumps, sometimes three and four countries together, they looked like passengers on party boats competing to make the most noise, to signal that their country was having the most fun.
And in the ceremony’s new format, they had to share screen time. The athletes’ parade disappeared for long stretches, or was reduced to a split-screen box, while the entertainment portion took over. In taped segments and on stages along the river, a great number of talented musicians and dancers took part in a presentation that was, in a certain sense, quintessentially French: titillating, hermetic, light on humor and heavy on pretense. Daring you not to find it dull.
The scale of the ceremony, three and a half miles from end to end, with much of its action taking place on or beside a wide river, made it a natural TV event. Spectators could only see what was in front of them, and that not very well; when we saw them cheering, they were most likely reacting to images on a nearby monitor.
But neither was there the sense that the TV viewer had the best vantage. The athletes on their boats still looked far away; the production numbers were not inventively staged for the cameras. Time and again, you got the feeling that what you were watching would be more exciting and moving if you were seeing it live, as it passed by. Juliette Armanet’s rendition of “Imagine,” performed on a barge, with a blazing piano, through a rain-spotted lens, had an element of high camp onscreen; seen from the Trocadéro, it was probably spine-tingling.

Russia is training ukrainian children from seized land to fight their own country: report.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
Hundreds of Ukrainian children from territories seized by the invading Russian army have allegedly been sent to Kremlin-backed military boot camps training them to fight for Moscow , according to a disturbing new report.
Ukrainian teens were showcased on Moscow’s OTR channel assembling and firing Kalashnikov assault rifles at a camp in southern Russia’s Volgograd region, where about 330 Ukrainian kids are being trained, the Times reports .
The unsettling new footage included the children receiving weapons and drone operation training from a masked instructor, all while the Russian flag and a portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin loomed in the backdrop.
The video also showed an apparent endorsement of the camp from a Ukrainian girl touting her instructors, who all have combat experience fighting against Ukrainians.
“They can really teach you something here,” the 16-year-old girl, from the Kherson region, says as she learns to fly a drone.
It’s unclear if the child was forced to provide the soundbite under duress. A girl with her same name, age and native region as the teen in the report is listed on the Ukrainian government’s Children of War database.
OTR, a state-controlled outlet, said the Ukrainian kids at the camp were all from the territories being occupied in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
The camp, which is typically attended by Russian children ages 14 to 17, is reportedly operated by the Moscow organization Voin, founded at Putin’s order, to produce “a new generation of patriots who love their motherland.”
Along with the camp in Volgograd, dozens of Ukrainian teens have been sent to similar military camps in Tyumen and Kalmykia, according to Voin.
Hundreds of other Ukrainian children have also been sent to Chechnya for military training as part of a separate program since 2022.
Ukrainian officials have warned of this developing following reports last year of kidnapped children being sent to Russian “re-education” camps where they allegedly suffer physical and sexual violence as they’re forced to intake Russian propaganda.
Dmytro Lubinets, Kyiv’s top human rights official, has accused Moscow of orchestrating a nationwide brainwashing program to transform children into “full-fledged soldiers” who could turn against their own country.
“The Kremlin is forcibly forming a generation of Ukrainian children that is taught hatred and violence against everything Ukrainian,” Lubinets told the Times.
Like Putin, the Kremlin’s children’s rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova has been charged by the International Criminal Court for war crimes related to the abduction of Ukrainian children
Russia has denied the allegations but previously admitted to taking in more than 700,000 Ukrainian children from occupied territories since the war began.

As close to perfection as it gets, dovetailing the yacht design talent of Espen Øino International ... [+] with the yachtbuilding precision and expertise of Hodgdon Yachts delivers a new choice in luxury limousine tenders.
Perfection is elusive, but this newest tender collaboration fusing Espen Øino’s intuitive, intelligent yacht design talents with the quintessential yachtbuilding skills of Hodgdon Yachts comes very close.
Hodgdon Yachts has been building peerless quality marine vessels for more than 200 years, offering a portfolio of premier projects that has built an enviable reputation. Espen Øino has consistently given the yachting industry a creative edge with purpose since the founder's early days in the 1990s at Martin Francis, going on to deliver exceptional yacht designs with every major name in yachting. These two icons of the yachting industry have come together to create an elegant limousine tender every yacht owner would love to have in their yacht's tender garage.
One of two new limousine tender designs by Espen Øino for Hodgdon Yachts, this aft helm version ... [+] offers outdoor seating fore and aft, with enclosed seating in between.
The new design comes in two layouts and can be built to a range of 30 to 36 feet (9 to 11 meters). One layout puts the helm forward, maximizing guest seating in the enclosed cabin. The other layout locates the helm aft, offering seating both fore and aft outside with enclosed seating in between, and a bow ramp for beachlanding and boarding.
The forward helm version of the new tender design collaboration by Espen Øino International for ... [+] Hodgdon Yachts offers the most protected seating arrangement, with a retractable roof that closes to shield guests from weather or opens to welcome the sun.

Both models have integrated hull side windows and carefully thought out boarding mechanisms. Interiors and guest areas are crafted in the clean, modern style and luxury materials Espen Øino is known for. A retractable roof and aft bulkhead open up the boat nicely so that guests can enjoy pleasant weather if they wish. Owner preference dictates whether the yacht will have single or twin engines.
After an Espen Øino visit to the Hodgdon facilities in Maine, and a reciprocal visit by Hodgdon to Espen Øino International in Monaco, the decision was made to move forward with the collaboration.
“We are excited to have developed a tender with modern styling to go alongside our time-tested classic Venetian line,” said Audrey Hodgdon, Managing Director of Hodgdon Tenders. “In addition to designing a beautiful boat, Espen and his team understand how the tender gets used by Owners, guests, and crew and a lot of thought went into functionality and practicality.”
A view through the cabin to the bow seating area from the aft helm version of this new tender ... [+] designed by Espen Øino International for Hodgdon Yachts is a fusion of EOI modern style and Hodgdon build quality.
Hodgdon, based in Boothbay, Maine, is known for building the limousine, beachlander, and open tenders found on many of today's top superyachts, but also builds complex custom superyachts, carbon fiber sailing yachts, and high performance motor yachts, as well projects designed for the U. S. Navy. A recent collaboration revealed in April of this year paired them with Italian luxury automobile company Maserati on the Tridente carbon fiber power dayboat , the first fully electric Hodgdon.
Both models of this new work designed Espen Øino and built by Hodgdon Yachts will have a common hull ... [+] with retracting roof and aft bulkhead.
Espen Øino International, based in Monaco, is known for changing up the norms of superyacht design in strategic, innovative ways, delivering new layouts, top of industry technologies, and unique designs that build into award-winning, attention-getting superyachts. Recent collaborations include work with Triton Subs on Project Hercules with Dark Ocean DeepSea , a luxury performance submersible capable of diving to 200 meters and "swimming" at eight knots, built to exacting safety standards with extensive testing and full certification.
Both Espen Øino International and Hodgdon Yachts are experienced in custom designs, ensuring each build is distinctive, sturdy, and stylish. Build time, according to Audrey Hodgdon, Marketing Director for Hodgdon Yachts, will be around 14-16 months. The price is available upon request.

Accused drug trafficker dubbed "Pirate of the Unknown" extradited to NYC following arrest before international yacht race
Updated on: July 29, 2024 / 8:40 AM EDT / CBS/AP
A citizen of Montenegro nicknamed the "Pirate of the Unknown" has been extradited to New York City from Italy to face charges connected to what U.S. authorities called an international drug ring that transported tons of cocaine around the world. The extradition comes after Milos Radonjic was arrested in Italy where authorities say he planned to captain a yacht in an international race.
Radonjic, 34, arrived in Brooklyn on Friday and is scheduled to be arraigned in federal court Monday, according to federal prosecutors and officials with the Department of Homeland Security and FBI. A federal grand jury indicted him and several other people last year on charges of conspiracy and attempt to violate the Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act.
According to court filings, Radonjic was a high-ranking member of a transnational drug organization that used commercial cargo ships, including some registered to deliver goods to the U.S., to transport tons of cocaine from South America to Europe for drug cartels in the Balkans . Ship crew members knowingly took part in the alleged trafficking, court documents say.
"Radonjic allegedly organized three separate attempts, with the assistance of a corrupt crew member on a commercial cargo vessel, to load a container ship with more than 2,500 kilograms of cocaine in Ecuador and off the coast of Colombia," prosecutors said .
U.S. authorities said Radonjic and others arranged to use speed boats to deliver drugs at night to cargo ships on the high seas near Colombia and Ecuador.
Radonjic and others also trafficked narcotics that have "contributed to the overdose and drug addiction crisis in the United States and throughout the world," U.S. prosecutors wrote in a request to a federal judge to detain Radonjic pending trial.
"This arrest and successful extradition is a lesson that the high seas are not a no-man's land for the rule of law, and that we are committed to bringing those who violate it to justice," Breon Peace, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement Saturday.
Peace's office said Radonjic had not been assigned an attorney as of Saturday.
Radonjic was arrested in October after traveling to Italy to captain a yacht in an international race, authorities said. Radonjic was supposed to be the skipper of the 24-meter Maxi Jena at the Barcolana, one the world's largest sailing races, when he was taken into custody, according to the magazine InTrieste .
U.S. authorities have not released the names of other people who were indicted and said they were not in U.S. custody.
If convicted, Radonjic faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years' imprisonment and up to life in prison.
His extradition comes just days after authorities announced another international drug trafficker with a colorful nickname was arrested. Earlier this month, a major cocaine network — led by a smuggler known as "The Professor" — was busted in Europe.
Last month, European police forces arrested around 40 people in a years-long operation to bust a major drug smuggling ring, leading to the seizure of eight tons of cocaine, and Europol said many members of the network were, like Radonjic, from countries in the Balkans.

How biden changed his party.
We explore three ways the president has shaped the Democratic Party.
By David Leonhardt
President Biden has never exactly been a liberal Democrat or a conservative Democrat. He has instead stayed in his party’s mainstream. When the party moved right in the 1990s, he moved with it. When it moved left in the 2010s, so did he.
But Biden has not simply gone with the Democratic flow. Over his more than 50 years in politics, he has periodically shown strong opinions about how his party should change — and helped it do so.
Last night in Chicago, Biden took a big step in his long political goodbye, delivering a 52-minute speech at the Democratic convention . In today’s newsletter, I’ll examine how Biden’s presidency shaped his party — and consider whether Kamala Harris is likely to continue these shifts. I think three points are key.
1. Biden’s neopopulism
Biden has always understood the class resentments that many Americans feel. (If you haven’t read Robert Draper’s profile of Biden for The Times Magazine, I recommend it , including the section in which Biden analyzes George W. Bush.)
Biden’s political career began in 1972, when he defeated an incumbent Republican senator in Delaware even as Richard Nixon won a landslide. Biden ran as a subtly different kind of Democrat, with a more working-class image than the party’s presidential nominee that year, George McGovern. Biden simultaneously distanced himself from the liberal fervor of the 1960s and portrayed himself as an economic populist. He criticized both draft dodgers and “millionaires who don’t pay any taxes at all.”
Five decades later, Biden became the most populist Democratic president in modern times. This positioning wasn’t just about his background, either. Populism has recently gained a new appeal, thanks to the failure of the market-based economic policies of the past half-century — which are often known as neoliberalism — to deliver broad-based prosperity.
Instead of focusing on trade deals, Biden tried to build up American manufacturing. He joined a picket line with autoworkers and appointed labor-friendly regulators. He gave Medicare the power to negotiate drug prices. He cracked down on “junk fees.” He tried to end decades of gentle antitrust regulation.
Biden devoted much of his speech last night to this agenda. He claimed to have rebuilt “the backbone of the middle class.” He said, “We finally beat big Pharma,” and “Wall Street didn’t build America, the middle class built America.” When the crowd chanted, “Union Joe,” he replied, “I agree. I’m proud.”
These economic policies are largely popular even though Biden is not. If the Democratic Party’s shift away from neoliberalism — toward what I’ve called neopopulism — continues, Biden’s presidency will be a major reason. And Harris’s initial economic proposals suggest that much of the shift will continue if she wins.
2. Bipartisanship lives
Biden loves to talk about how he has proved his doubters wrong, sometimes with a dash or two of hyperbole. Yet there is at least one aspect of his presidency for which he deserves to gloat: his surprising success at passing bipartisan legislation.
He has signed bipartisan bills on infrastructure, semiconductor chips, Ukraine aid and TikTok — as well as on anti-Asian hate crimes, the aviation system, the electoral process, gun violence, the Postal Service, same-sex marriage and veterans’ health. In a polarized Washington, Biden has demonstrated that bipartisanship remains possible.
“Remember, we were told we couldn’t get it done?” he asked in last night’s speech.
He drew on his long Senate career to help pass these bills. He refused to treat the Republican Party as the enemy and remained upbeat — and often in the background — even when negotiations stalled.
Would Harris show similar patience? And would congressional Republicans be willing to work with her? It’s hard to know.
3. A new cold war
Biden’s signature line about foreign policy is that the world is witnessing a struggle between democracy and autocracy . You can quibble with the details, but his basic point is correct.
U.S. allies are mostly democracies — including Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India, Australia, Mexico and Canada. The countries that treat the U.S. as an enemy are autocracies — China, Russia, Iran and North Korea. Increasingly, these autocracies are collaborating with one another.
Biden has defined the United States as the leading player in an alliance to combat autocracy. “Who can lead the world other than the United States of America?” he asked last night.
As president, he confronted China economically and promised to defend Taiwan. He rallied a pro-Ukraine coalition after Russia invaded. He withdrew from Afghanistan — chaotically — partly because of its limited strategic importance. He abandoned his initial reluctance to work with Saudi Arabia, an autocratic ally, and embraced it as a counterweight to Iran. He continued to embrace Israel for similar reasons, despite the death and destruction in Gaza.
Biden’s foreign policy is based on the idea that the world has entered a new cold war (even if he rejects the term). And Harris? Her campaign has said little about foreign policy or her worldview. Maybe that will start to change in Chicago this week.
More on the convention
“ America, I gave my best to you ,” Biden said in a speech that also criticized Donald Trump.
Biden called picking Harris as his running mate the best decision of his career. He joked that “like many of our best presidents, she was also vice president.”
Introduced by his daughter Ashley, Biden dabbed tears as convention delegates held signs reading “We ❤️ Joe.”
Speaking earlier, Hillary Clinton said, “On the other side of that glass ceiling is Kamala Harris raising her hand and taking the oath of office .”
