The city, close to the base of the Pyrenees, is large enough that it has its own underground railway network, by which you can hide from the fearsome summer heat as you explore the multitude of attractions at the surface.
Some highlights worth a visit:
- Las Ramblas, a long pedestrianised street that is best explored in the evening while nibbling on tapas and sipping sangria. What you will see and find there will remain with you for times to come!
- The Gaudi Monument, (Sagrada Familia) a cathedral that is so complex, construction is set to be completed in 2026, over 140 years since the first stone was laid!
- The Platja (beach) from where you can watch the world go by as you sunbathe and drink in the atmosphere of this stunning city - one of many beautiful beaches you will find on a Barcelona yacht charter.
- Parc Güell, a monumental garden where the architect Gaudi's mind went wild and is said to have 'perfected his style' - now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- And of course for those on a Barcelona yacht charter especially, the Olympic Port. This was rebuilt ahead of the 1994 Olympics and is the largest of the seven marinas in the city where you may begin your sailing holiday.
This list is far from exhaustive! As you roam the city you will get the buzz for one that never really sleeps and there's always something going on. It is one of the most popular city destinations in Spain and you will soon see why. There's something for everyone, and everyone will soon be immersed in the parts you enjoy and may want to spend just a little more time there!
Explore Barcelona By Renting A Yacht
Barcelona is the gateway to the Costa Brava, and you can also island-hop the Balearic Islands from here.
The Mediterranean Sea coast of the 'Costa Brava' literally translates to 'Wild Coast', in a large part due to the sometimes fearsome north wind, the Tramontana that can get very feisty even in the summer. The further east you head the closer to the Pyrenees you are, and this is where the cold air falls from that creates the wind. It means you need to be ready to put a double reef in, though there is accurate forecasting that will inform you whether you may need to do so.
Heading east on your chartered yacht on a tour of the Costa Brava you can get to Cadaques and the spectacular Cap de Creus. Masters of modern art Salvador Dali and Picasso used to hang out in Cadaques for its scenery and clarity of light - the light caused by the Tramontana blasting all the rubbish out of the air! On such a trip, do pay a visit to Girona - the mediaeval capital of Catalonia and still a beautiful city with its old town and university today.
Barcelona is also a gateway to the Balearic Islands. Over a couple of days sailing you can head down the coast and then out to the islands of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. These three islands are part of the same island chain but are very different to one another. Ibiza is for hippies, party people and families. Majorca's capital Palma is almost as good as Barcelona. Menorca is quieter than the other two islands but has plenty of unspoilt beauty none the less.
As ever, whether on a luxury yacht charter or bareboat charter the choice is down to you. Perhaps you could go on a couple of sailing holidays and explore firstly the east and then the south-west?
How To Get To Barcelona
There are two airports you will see advertised as Barcelona. Barcelona Airport itself is an hour's train ride from the city centre (thanks to security you must now change trains midway through the journey) but Girona-Barcelona also advertises as Barcelona - this is a two hour trip by bus from Barcelona. The flights and travel often work out significantly cheaper via Girona thanks to the popularity of Barcelona Airport itself.
Barcelona Airport
This is an international airport with airlines all over the world flying into it. It has its own train station so it makes sense to take a train to Barcelona Sants train station and then take a bus or taxi onto the marina.
Girona-Barcelona Airport
Girona-Barcelona Airport has airlines from across Europe serving it, and gets busy in the summer with charter flights.
Girona is a significant distance from Barcelona, and its name is a slick piece of advertising. Even with an added few hours to your overland journey from Girona to Barcelona however you will often find that the cost of travel is significantly cheaper to the main city.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Barcelona
Sailing from Barcelona on your boat rental you have two main choices of popular destinations - exploring the Costa Brava or the Balearic Islands by sailing boat or motorboat. Here we look at a week-long trip up to Cadaques and then a two week trip to the Balearic Islands.
7 Days - Cadaques and Cap de Creus: Cadaques is a charming harbour with water and air so clear you could forget this is the 21st Century. The art town is the halfway point of a trip where you can explore Sitges, Girona and the Bay of Roses as you go. The scenery of the Pyrenees falling into the sea here will astound you - but do be aware of the katabatibc winds that can fall from above like bombs! Definitely a route for the more experienced sailor on a bareboat charter...
14 Days - tour of the Balearic Islands: Over 14 days heading west from Barcelona this is an opportunity to visit the important city of Valencia further down the coast before heading offshore and on to the Balearic Islands. If you spend 2-3 days per Balearic island you will have time to take in the various sights and sounds of Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca in their riot of different vibes. The winds are gentler on this route as for the best part of the trip you are out of the way of the Tramontana and can enjoy some very good sailing conditions with little in the way of the feisty north wind bothering you.
Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Barcelona
The sailing season in Barcelona is best from May to October. The major party towns heat up to full frenzy in June to August, and so do the prices. It is very much down to what you want from a sailing holiday in the region - if partying all night is on the cards, the top DJs will hit the region in that time and you will have quite a memorable time. If the quiet life is what you seek, then do try to get out during term time - the sea is still warm in September and October, though the infamous Tramontana starts to be more frequent at this time of year, as it eases off in early May.
Sailing Weather In Barcelona
The Tramontana tends to build from September and eases away in May, though this can blow fiercely for several days at a time even in midsummer.
The NE breeze common to coastal Mediterranean France dominates the Costa Brava in summer, cool relief from the summer heat. It never really gets above 17 knots or so so there will be some boisterous sailing but never more than is fun. You will see more precipitation towards the beginning and end of the sailing season (May and October) but the temperatures rarely stray below 15-17 degrees during those times. In the height of summer (July/August) it isn't as hot as mainland Spain, though you will see the odd few days in the 30+ C range. For Northern Europeans and those from other cooler climates this makes for fantastic sailing!
What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
What are the Marinas in Barcelona?
There are seven main marinas in Barcelona, with the two largest being Port Olimpic and Marina de Badalona. The five smaller are Marina Vela Barcelona, Port Forum, Reil Club Nautico de Barcelona, OneOcean Port Veil, and Reil Club Maritim de Barcelona
When are the best times to hire a boat in Barcelona?
The high season is in July and August. Locals flee the heat of the city and tourists replace them. Things get expensive and restaurants competitive. The city and sailing destinations nearby tend to relax a bit, become more friendly and cheaper outside of the peak season. If you can take a F7 gale from time to time (or certainly run for port safely) then it may make sense to go in May or September when the air is warm and the ports less busy.
Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Barcelona?
You will typically pay 50% upfront on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
What happens if my Yacht breaks down?
If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.
If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Navigating the Preparatory Seas: Considerations for Yacht Rental
Intriguing as it may be, the journey towards yacht rental is not devoid of intricacies that require careful contemplation. Like a good sailor maps his route, considering the winds and tides, so should an aspiring yacht renter plot their course, bearing in mind a multitude of factors.
⛵ Safety Above All
The tranquillity of the sea, as mesmerising as it is, should not make us forget the cardinal rule of yachting - safety first. Ensuring the yacht has the essential safety equipment, including lifejackets, first aid kits, and proper communication devices, is a must. It is also paramount to confirm that the rental company has rigorous maintenance practices and a well-trained crew to navigate Barcelona's waters.
⛵ The Call of Comfort
Yacht chartering is a marriage of adventure and comfort, and thus, one must ensure the yacht caters to the desired level of comfort and luxury. Whether it is the number of cabins for your esteemed guests or the presence of sophisticated amenities, the yacht should be an epitome of your comfort aspirations.
⛵ The Expanse of the Voyage
Are you planning to merely dance along the coastline or venture deeper into the Mediterranean's heart? Your itinerary will play a significant role in determining the type of yacht that best suits your needs. A sturdy, sea-worthy vessel will be required for long and adventurous excursions, while a luxury motor yacht might be more appropriate for coast-hugging, leisurely soirees.
The Majestic Marine Companion: Choosing the Right Yacht
In the world of yachts, as it is with the creatures of the sea, there is a stunning diversity. And in the vast expanse of Barcelona's waters, a choice must be made. For Barcelona, I would dare propose the superyacht as the most fitting candidate.
The superyacht, a marvel of maritime engineering, is a creature designed to command attention. With its expansive decks and opulent cabins, it can carry a congregation of guests with utmost comfort and grandeur. Equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and safety systems, it offers a safe and exhilarating sailing experience.
Furthermore, Barcelona's waters are typically calm and welcoming, making them the ideal playground for such a magnificent vessel. And the sheer size of a superyacht allows you to venture further from the shore, opening up opportunities to explore the lesser-known parts of Barcelona's maritime terrain.
In conclusion, to rent a yacht in Barcelona is to willingly surrender oneself to an experience of surreal tranquillity and grandeur. It is an opportunity to explore a city from an altogether different perspective and to indulge in the luxury that only a maritime adventure can offer. As you chart your course and select your vessel, may the sea be ever in your favour, and may the whispers of Barcelona's waters guide you on an unforgettable journey.
Sailing into Queries: Answering Your Barcelona Yachting Questions
In the shared dance of Barcelona's waters and our yachts, we find ourselves in an orchestration of splendid exploration. And as we embark on this voyage, it's only natural for inquiries to surface, just as a curious dolphin might pierce the serene waterline with its gleaming gaze. Together, we shall address some of the frequently asked questions about yachting in Barcelona, illuminating the path for your maritime adventure.
What is the best time to rent a yacht in Barcelona?
The Mediterranean climate blesses Barcelona with warm summers and mild winters, making it an excellent year-round destination. However, for yachting, the period from May to October offers the best conditions, with calm seas and ample sunshine.
Do I need a license to charter a yacht?
If you plan to captain the yacht yourself, you will indeed need an appropriate license. However, most yacht charters in Barcelona come with a dedicated and experienced crew, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the journey without the need for a license.
Can I customize my yacht charter itinerary?
Absolutely! One of the beauties of chartering a yacht is the ability to customize your journey. You can decide where to stop, whether it's for a mid-sea swim, an exploration of coastal towns, or an immersive experience in the region's natural parks.
How many people can a yacht accommodate?
This largely depends on the size of the yacht. A typical superyacht can comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests for overnight stays, although larger vessels may house more. For day trips, the capacity tends to be higher.
What services are included in a yacht charter?
Most yacht charters in Barcelona offer a range of services, including a dedicated crew, fuel, water sports equipment, and sometimes even a personal chef. However, this can vary between charter companies, so it's always advisable to confirm the included services beforehand.
Embracing the spirit of exploration, we hope these answers serve as guiding stars on your nautical chart, navigating you towards an unforgettable yachting experience in the charming waters of Barcelona.

Luxury Yacht Charter in Barcelona
Barcelona is the famous Spanish city located in a small coastal plain near the French border, at the foot of the mountain Collserola. It is Spain's second biggest city and second biggest port of Catalonia. There is no city that can compete with Barcelona when it comes to style and energy. You can start with the promenade of Las Ramblas, and then proceed to the medieval core of the city, Barri Gotic.
After exploring all the monuments and beauties of Barcelona, you can rent a yacht and cruise around to nearby cities such as Lloret de Mar, or maybe towards the south to Garraf. With its Mediterranean climate and long summers (May to September), Barcelona provides a comfortable environment for yachting, even in the spring.
Yacht charter Barcelona
The biggest harbour in Barcelona is Port Olimpic. You can navigate to the south and enjoy the view of the vintage cable cars (built for the 1929 World Expo) across the neighboring Port Vell, Montjuic hill with its castle, and the iconic W hotel at the end of the southern beaches. If you navigate your chartered yacht towards the south, you will come across the popular destination of Sitges. On the other hand, if you just want to drop the anchor and enjoy some silence, you should navigate to the north.
With Click and Boat, you have the choice in between a lot of different types of boats: sailboats, catamarans or motorboats, you just need to pick a date and navigate there ! If you are beginner, our boat rentals can be provided with skipper also.
We hope to see you soon on Click&Boat for a yacht charter in Barcelona!

Yacht in Barcelona
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second-largest city of Spain. Thanks to its strategic location on the Mediterranean coast, the city acts as a gateway to Europe for goods coming from Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world. Barcelona also has a high population index (around 5.6 million people) and has an international airport that connects to all five continents. A rise in sustainable and economic growth has granted Barcelona the title of a grand European metropolis. It is a world-class city saturated with art, science, media, and fashion.
The history of Barcelona has been closely linked to the sea and, for millennia, its natural terrain was crisscrossed by watercourses formed by very compact clays. After the Roman Barcino was established by the Romans during the reign of Augustus, the coastline varied due to its constant dynamics between the sea and land. The sea created islets and lagoons, which gradually formed a built-up landscape. Today, the coastline has inherited centuries of evolution, providing the opportunity to enjoy leisure activities and sailing away from the urban world.
Before you rent a yacht in Barcelona and sail the wonderful Catalan coastline, we recommend you to visit several tourist attractions. Out of Barcelona’s sixty-eight parks, it is worth exploring Ciutadella Park, the largest green space within the city. Among Barcelona’s highlights is the Passeig de Gracia. Here, you will find big fashion brands and restaurants that are connected to the central part of the city. La Rambla is the most popular street in Barcelona, which leads to the old port. It is not too far from the Gothic Quarter, known for buildings that date as far back as the Roman period. Walking around the old town, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the live performances, cultural attractions, and taste the Spanish appetizers known as Tapas. The most visited monument in Spain is Gaudi’s architectural accomplishment, known as La Sagrada Familia. This is a giant Basilica and perhaps the best-known structure of Catalan Modernism that attracts over 3 million tourists annually.
Extending away from the metropolitan area, it is time for you to hire a yacht in Barcelona and explore the most exciting destinations in Europe from the water. With a yacht charter in Barcelona, you cannot miss the chance to stop by the coastal town of Sitges, situated 35 kilometers southwest of the city. Sitges is known worldwide for its Film Festival and Carnival and is often referred to as the “St Tropez of Spain.” There is also a fantastic old town and 17 different beaches you can pick from. On your way back to Barcelona, you can make a stop at Castelldefels, best known for its 5 km of gorgeous beaches and castles.
If you have a strict time schedule, you can rent a luxury motor yacht in Barcelona and continue reaching down the coast from Sitges. This way you can make a stop at Tarragona, one of the wealthiest towns in Spain. It is also home to Port Aventura, one of the largest and most visited amusement parks in Europe. Near Tarragona, you will find the breathtaking landscape known as the Costa Dorada, famous for its pristine waters and fine golden sands.
For a day yacht hire in Barcelona, you can also head to the Costa Brava region. There is nothing better than to spend a restful night onboard a motor yacht in crystal-clear waters, surrounded by pine forests. Besides that, you can always find new anchoring spots and swim and snorkel in protected coves around Estartit, Girona, and Roses Bay.
Finally, a private yacht charter in Barcelona can last for as long as a week. You can make a stop at the exotic Balearic Islands, such as Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza. Sailing away from the crowds will make your return home with the most charming memories.

Rent motor yachts
Barcelona is a European city where a favorable climate, high-quality infrastructure, tasty and inexpensive food, rich Mediterranean traditions and interesting places where visitors are always welcome are perfectly combined.
A yacht charter in Barcelona is suitable for people who prefer luxury and comfort while traveling. The cost of transport rental and excursions is not important for them.
The high price of renting motor yachts is due to the high fuel consumption when sailing and their comfort. The benefits also include the ability to quickly move between locations. Compared to sailing catamarans and classic sailboats, they are capable of speed. This allows you to visit as many attractions as possible in a short time. Everything is beautiful in Barcelona, especially the magical architecture, which is often used as a film set and inspires artists all over the world daily.
In Barcelona, you can sail on yachts all year round. The coastline is 8,000 km, over 300 marinas and many sailing centers. But in late autumn and winter, be sure to wear warm clothes. The peak season runs from March to October, including both months. Most in demand for hourly yacht charter services is from May to September, as these months are the warmest, and during the Spanish national holidays and annual festivals.
The capacity of most motor yachts is up to 12 people. The duration of the trip, for which it is optimal to rent a yacht, depends on the purpose of the holiday or event.
For a pleasant yacht charter in Barcelona, the ideal rental length is between 2 and 4 hours. You can choose between beaches located on the outskirts of Barcelona, which are quieter and less crowded, and those in the center, where life is always in full swing.
If you want to spend more time sailing, it is worth renting a motor yacht for the whole day (8 hours) and ordering catering services to try Catalan Mediterranean cuisine. It was formed under the influence of the Greeks, Romans, French, and Italians. The menu is dominated by popular ingredients with health benefits. Fish, seafood, sun-ripened vegetables, and tasty wine create a combination that is hard to resist. Among the most popular local dishes: are hato (anchovy, cod, tuna salad with chicory and olives), empanadas (Spanish shrimp paella), escalivada (baked vegetables), panele desserts, tortella, Catalan creams, etc.
List of things you need to take with you to rent a yacht for a few hours or a whole day:
- Sunglasses,
- sun hat (cap)
- bathing suit,
- shoes with white non-slip soles,
- jacket (in case it gets cold at sunset),
- cure for seasickness.
If the sea is calm, you can make a stop, leaving the boat to drift, to swim in the open sea. You can also anchor near the beach to swim and relax on the shore.
Most often, yachts are rented for the following events:
- holidays with family or friends,
- business meeting,
- birthday celebrations or small weddings,
Most of our yachts in Barcelona are located in ports and marinas: Port Marina Vela, Port Olimpic, and One Ocean Club. Therefore, you always have the opportunity to order a motor yacht for rent near you, regardless of the area of temporary residence.
How to book a motor yacht in Barcelona?

Sailing for Large Groups
There are no individual boats for groups larger than 125 people in Barcelona, but there are a couple of fun options for that corporate team (of up to 400 people!) that is keen to get in the water….
Sailing Regatta (up to 400 people)
If you’re hosting an event for more than 125 people it will be hard to get them on one boat… that’s when a sailing regatta could be a better option. During this sporting challenge up to 400 people can take part, racing against each other on small boats of up to 8 people plus skipper. The activity is a really great way to challenge your colleagues in a new environment, and really test their team working and communication capabilities. Multinationals such as Pepsi, Mars, Zurich, Unilever, DHL and Swarovski have all booked this very event for their staff in recent years. We work direct with the provider, with no mark up on the price, so just drop us an email on [email protected] with dates, group size, etc and you’ll hear back within 1 working day.

Group Sailing Tour (up to 400 people)
Another option for a large groups is a 3-hour sailing tour on multiple boats. This is similar to the regatta (above) but without the competitive element, so a good reward for a team that has already proven their credentials! Guests will be given the chance to sunbathe, relax with a glass of Cava, swim (during summer) and steer the ship. As there are less logistics involved, it’s also cheaper to run (and to book). More details below or send us an email on [email protected] .

Tensions and hostility against america’s cup sailing competition ‘for the rich’ in barcelona.

Resentment against the effects of massive tourism has been brewing for years in Barcelona, and that sentiment has reached new heights this summer precisely as the America’s Cup , the world’s premier sailing competition, starts and becomes the latest target of protests and criticism.
Protesters are blasting the oldest sporting race in the world that runs from August 22 to October 27 as ‘elitist and opaque’, claiming that it’s “just for rich people,” driving up prices for locals and putting the Spanish city under more pressure.
The Platform Against the America’s Cup, created last year to fight “against an event that will generate mass tourism and is already causing the massive diversion of housing to seasonal rentals,” as stated on their site, has said that new protests against the event are being organized as six teams compete to claim the 37th victory of the yacht race .
“A lot of people involved in the race have taken up long-term rents on apartments in the city center and pushed up prices for local people,” Martí Cuso of the Platform warned. “There will be protests coming in the first week of September.”

According to the daily La Vanguardia of Barcelona, “the America's Cup 2024 disguises the agony of beach clubs in Barcelona and all Catalonia.”
The article explains how, paradoxically, the celebration in Barcelona of the oldest regatta in the world coincides with the demolition of local nautical clubs. “This global event hides the anguish of Catalan sailing clubs threatened by a rigid enforcement of the State Coastal Law.”
“The great legacy that the Cup will bring for Barcelona is the recovery of the coast,” Barcelona’s mayor told El Periodico newspaper.

Looking for “Quality Tourism”....for the rich
From the official side, The America’s Cup — the ultimate sporting competition for the super-rich — is, in fact, an effort by city officials to attract “quality, rather than quantity” tourism.
The yacht competition is sponsored by the luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton , which in late May had already organized a star-studded fashion show in the Park Güell, one of Barcelona’s most popular tourist attractions, designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí, that caused serious clashes between residents protesting the closure of the park for the glitzy event and baton-wielding police charging at protesters.

Since then, anger has been growing over the fact that the city is being overrun by tourists and glitzy international events to the detriment of local life.
“Local people say they have been bombarded with calls from estate agents and speculators wanting to buy their homes to cash in on the event, which they say is pushing up rents” the Guardian writes.

Displaced by the crowds
Much of the local population has already been driven out of the areas of Barcelona most affected by mass tourism and campaigners fighting for more stringent controls argue that “rather than attracting a ‘better’, high-spending type of tourist, events such as the America’s Cup simply bring more people to a city already struggling to cope with the mass of visitors.”
Those who live near hot spots in the city are frustrated with daily life where, as reported in the New York Times , they feel “displaced by the crowds; pollution along the waterfront where massive cruise ships dock; and everywhere, it seems, an apparent disregard for local culture.”
Jaume Collboni, the socialist mayor of Barcelona, has said that the contest will bring €1.2 billion in revenue for the city, and create jobs. Critics, on the other hand, say that the potential income from the lavish competition will be enjoyed by few as the tournament itself is followed mostly by the elites.
“This is not like the Olympics, where people are interested in the sport,” Cuso told the web news site i . “This is just for rich people who can afford to go and see the yachts on their own boats at sea.”
He went further to explain that the yachts are sponsored by luxury brands that want to use Barcelona to promote their products.
America's Cup trophy
Tensions and hostility rising
Tensions over tourism that finally boiled over into outright hostility has triggered splashy headlines globally, such as the incident last month when some 3,000 residents took to the streets to protest against tourism , some squirting visitors on the city’s famed boulevard Las Ramblas with water guns.
In 2023, 12 million tourists visited Barcelona, a city of 1.6 million residents, making it the favorite destination in Spain. This year, tourism officials ex[ect at least 13 million visitors.
“Their impact includes skyrocketing housing prices, dirty beaches, crowded thoroughfares and the transformation of historic neighborhoods into what locals refer to as “theme parks,” The New York Times writes.
Barcelona is the second Spanish city to host the competition. Valencia hosted two consecutive editions in 2007 and 2010.
Security reinforcements
As for the multi-million pound America’s Cup, a major security operation has been launched around the event and competition areas with more than 650 police deployed in land, six boats patrolling the sea and helicopters flying above Barcelona. The Civil Guard has also deployed divers to reinforce security at sea.
Following years of technological innovation and hundreds of millions of euros of investment from super-rich backers, the Emirates Team New Zealand will be defending the title against challenges by boats from Italy, Switzerland, France, the U.K. and the U.S.
At the round-robin stage, which will last until September 8, each challenger crew races each other twice, with the top four progressing to the semi-finals. Those Challengers of Record will face-off against the reigning champions in a series of races in October.
Most of the teams have had established bases for training in Port Vell, the city’s old port, since last year.
The America’s Cup was first staged on the Isle of Wight in 1851 and is claimed to be the oldest international sporting event in the world. It was last held in 2021 in Auckland, New Zealand, and was won by the hosts.

On Luxurious Ibiza, Essential Workers Are Forced to Live in Tent Cities
The Spanish island fills beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs with wealthy tourists. But its teachers, firefighters and police officers can’t find a place to live.
By Benjamin Cunningham
At 1,900 euros a month, the rent was not cheap. But Alicia Bocuñano still felt fortunate to find an apartment on Ibiza at that price. As a taxi driver pulling 16-hour days, Ms. Bocuñano, a single mother who grew up on this Spanish island, figured that a surplus from the busy summer months might be enough to make the rent.
But her would-be landlord wanted six months of rent plus a security deposit up front — close to €14,000, or about $15,300, in one shot. Though not quite legal in Spain’s tightly regulated rental sector, such demands are common on Ibiza, where wealthy tourists fill beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs while the people who work in those places — not to mention the island’s teachers, firefighters and other essential workers — can’t find a place to live.
In lieu of a new apartment, Ms. Bocuñano, 38, spent a frightening two weeks sleeping in her car, then three months in a tent with her 10-year-old son, Raúl, by her side, before buying a used caravan in June. For a couple of months, she stationed the Caravelair-brand trailer in Can Rova, an ad hoc village of tents, shacks and campers on the outskirts of Ibiza Town, the island’s capital, just behind a dealership selling expensive powerboats. “When we first came here it was cold,” she said. “Like, very cold.”
Tent cities began popping up here in 2023, but they have mushroomed in size and number this year. Can Rova, the largest of three major camps in and around the capital, was home to some 280 people this summer. On a recent July night, six people and a dog were bedding down on the floor in Ms. Bocuñano’s caravan.
Many Can Rova residents said that, with nowhere else to go, they hoped to stay indefinitely. But on July 31, the police made good on a court order to clear the camp, which had been erected on private land. (The owner is currently embroiled in an array of zoning and legal disputes.) Many said they planned to relocate to one of the other camps, even as those sites lacked the electricity, water and perimeter fence that made Can Rova accommodating.
Ms. Bocuñano was detained by the police during the mass eviction, and may face a fine.
In much of the world, homelessness correlates with a lack of work. But not on Ibiza, where the jobs are plentiful and the booming tourism sector depends on itinerant workers (with varying immigration status). Though seasonal labor has long strained the housing supply for a few months each year, the shortage now looks more structural.
“People who work every day to care for their children have no place to live,” Ms. Bocuñano said.
The rise of remote work and a surge in short-term rentals have erased many apartments from the market, compounding existing shortages caused by land-use restrictions on an island prized for its natural beauty, and by poor public policy that followed the burst of Spain’s housing bubble in 2008.
“It is fundamental,” said Carme Trilla, an economist and former director of housing policy for Catalonia, the Spanish region on “the peninsula,” as islanders are wont to say. “By definition they have to live there, and it’s not only price but also availability that is a problem.”
Ibiza’s deepening housing crisis came slowly at first, and then all at once. The island’s brand — “sun, beaches, nightlife,” as one broker put it — blossomed in the 1960s and ’70s as bohemians congregated on this Balearic Island. The flower children gave way to disco, and bell bottoms were pushed off the dance floor in the 1980s and 1990s by rave culture. By the 2000s, Ibiza had secured its reputation as a mecca for electronic music and luxury escapism.
“It is the only place in the world where you can see the top DJs in the world in top venues every night,” said Yann Pissenem, C.E.O. and owner of the Night League, parent company to Ushuaia and Hi, two of the island’s hottest clubs.
The island’s year-round population of 160,000 is double what it was 20 years ago and growing. During peak summer months, more than a million people make merry on the island at any given time, with upscale tourism putting still more pressure on housing.
Ibiza is an extreme example of a larger phenomenon in Spain, where about 12 percent of the gross domestic product comes from tourism. A recent report found that in 306 cities and towns considered tourism draws, rents are an average of 75 percent higher than the national average — the largest gap ever. Already this summer, thousands of protesters have turned up in other vacation spots including Malaga, Mallorca and the Canary Islands to demonstrate against the excesses of tourism.
Ms. Trilla, who now runs Habitat 3, a foundation that works to facilitate subsidized housing, said that on Ibiza, the crisis has been intensified by a new spate of discount airline connections to European capitals, and by more online platforms renting apartments to foreign visitors. The median price for a home on the island is now €558 a square foot — three times the national average and more than double the average in Madrid and Barcelona.
Three-quarters of prospective buyers on Ibiza are looking for a second home, while another 15 percent want an investment property, said Paloma Pérez Bravo, C.E.O. of Sotheby’s International Realty in Spain. So on an island with inadequate housing and limited buildable land, many homes sit vacant for much of the year. And since the pandemic, she added, there’s been more demand from buyers who want to live on the island year-round. “Ibiza is a good investment because the prices never stop rising,” Ms. Pérez said.
On a recent afternoon just before the demolition at Can Rova, residents related stories of crammed studio apartments where people would sleep in shifts on so-called “hot beds” for about €300 a month.
Maria Fernanda Chica, a 34-year-old Colombian who is awaiting working papers, lived in one such apartment while cleaning luxury homes for cash. “I couldn’t cook food when I needed to,” she said of the conditions. “At best I could use the kitchen once per day.”
This summer, she was living in a makeshift structure in Can Rova with her partner and teenage son. Most of the residents there rented plots for between €350 and €450 a month, plus €50 euros for water and another €50 for electricity. The residents were responsible for digging their own septic systems. A good number had built shanties from plywood, shipping pallets, AstroTurf, tarpaulins and other basic materials.
Jonathan Sanchez, 33, and his girlfriend Sandra Velasquez, 41, sleep in a tent among a few dozen others in another informal settlement. Mr. Sanchez, who was born on Ibiza, works construction by day. Ms. Velasquez, a Colombian émigré lacking work documents, works nights cleaning for €7 an hour.
“I don’t even remember the last time I went to the beach,” said Mr. Sanchez on a recent night. His T-shirt said “Ants” — the name of the party that Mr. Pissenem hosts on Saturdays.
The couple charge their mobile phones at bus stops and draw water from a tap in a nearby cemetery. Most of their neighbors are seasonal workers from Morocco who decamp after the summer season. Mr. Sanchez has been in his tent for 14 months. His co-workers have no idea where he lives. “It’s not that I am embarrassed,” he said. “I just don’t want people to feel sorry for me.”
Whenever campers like Mr. Sanchez are forced to move on, the Guardia Civil, one of Spain’s two national police forces, will likely play a role (as they did in the Can Rova eviction). But many of the officers are themselves caught in this housing crisis. At the height of tourist season, there were 17 vacant Guardia Civil positions on Ibiza. Many new recruits avoid work on the island and rotate out when they can find an opening elsewhere in Spain, said Tomas Quesada, a Guardia Civil officer and union representative. Starting salaries are just €1,800 a month, and the monthly €94.63 cost-of-living bonus makes little difference.
“It is leading to the desertification of public services,” Mr. Quesada said. “We have the right to be able to live.”
Nurses and doctors face a similar reality. So do teachers, some of whom commute daily by airplane from other islands to save money. “We don’t have the same level of public services here in Ibiza,” said Joana Tur Planells, a union representative for teachers.
Land will always be limited on a 220-square-mile island, but there is an emerging consensus that government intervention is needed. In the town of Santa Eulària des Riu, where Can Rova was located, City Hall plans to allocate 54,000 square feet of public land for housing construction over the next few years. Policy documents call for increased emphasis on the construction of multifamily dwellings and a crackdown on illegal short-term rentals.
Carmen Ferrer Torres, Santa Eulalia des Riu’s conservative mayor, points to plans to break ground on the construction of 60 smaller rental apartments — a fraction of the units needed to ease the strain.
“These are important, urgent problems with solutions that will take longer than we have,” the mayor said. In the meantime, her party also advocates further liberalizing rental markets, betting that streamlined evictions for scofflaws could free up stagnant housing stock. Ms. Ferrer was on site supporting the July 31 clearance of Can Rova.
But for Ms. Trilla, the housing economist, the big picture solution is clear. “It’s necessary to prioritize public housing for essential workers,” she said, adding that the problem is not just housing but the price of land. Basically, public money is needed to buy private property at market prices.
She pointed to a series of policies in Barcelona, the Catalonian capital, that might ease short-term housing supply, including one that would temporarily loosen zoning rules so officials could break up single-family homes into multiple apartments. Barcelona is also phasing out short-term rentals of the type offered by platforms like Airbnb. They will be virtually banned by 2028.
On the private side, successful business owners like Mr. Pissenem, the club impresario, are wrestling with the crisis. His company has begun helping its seasonal workers find accommodations. “We all need to figure out a way to help the people that hold the island in their hands,” he said.
For now, Ibizans like Ms. Bocuñano wonder where their next home may be. For the first couple of nights after the Can Rova raid, she stayed on a friend’s couch. Her son is staying with her mother on the other side of the island. She was briefly allowed back in to Can Rova to get her personal possessions, including her caravan, but needed to borrow a vehicle to tow it.
From there, she said, “I am going to recover and put the pieces back together.”
