Undecided between a Rolex Yacht-Master or Submariner? Here is our guide:

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Yacht-Master vs Submariner

Both the Yacht-Master and the Submariner are inextricably linked to Rolex’s rich heritage in developing expert waterproofing technology. Over the last few years Rolex has focussed significantly on its Yacht-Master collection. Since 2015 they have created the Everose version and equipped models with the new Oysterflex bracelet. Likewise, the Submariner has received several modifications since it first launched in 1953, namely its improvement in water resistance. Let’s take a look at how the Yacht-Master and the Submariner fair up to one another in this comparison article which looks into the materials, functions, and performance of each watch.

Presenting the Yacht-Master:

The Yacht-Master is a luxury sports watch that launched in 1992 in an 18k yellow gold case. Since then, ladies’ models have accompanied these rugged timekeeping tools as well as several innovative features like the mid-size man’s model and the Rolesium case, crafted from a mix of Rolex’s 904-L grade stainless steel and 905 platinum. The blend of metals further enhances the model’s luxurious aesthetic, enabling the elements on the dial and bezel to stand out with exquisite luster and luminosity.

Presenting the Submariner:

The Submariner was introduced in 1953. The diver’s watch was an extension of the brand’s success in creating the world’s first waterproof and dustproof watch – the Oyster. It used the same structure as the Oyster case and was equipped with 100-meter water resistance, setting the benchmark for all diver’s watches to follow. Over the last 2 decades, the Submariner has tripled in price and remains a highly desirable model to own from the brand’s prestigious catalog.

Case and Bracelet:

The Submariner watch is a 40mm model, enabling it to sit comfortably on the arm without overpowering the wrist. It’s a great timepiece for pairing with sporty or casual attire. The case is crafted from stainless steel, featuring a monobloc middle case, a screw-down case back and a screw-down crown. The crown is integrated with the Triplock triple waterproofness system developed by Rolex. It features three sealed zones to offer the best water damage protection over the watch’s movement. The top of the watch is completed with anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass and the watch’s unidirectional rotating bezel is crafted from Cerachrom ceramic, which prevents the surface of the colored bezel from scratching and fading. The unidirectional rotating bezel has 60-minute graduations coated in platinum. Available in green, blue and black, these bezels match their respective dial colors. The case of the Submariner is also available in 18k white gold, 18k yellow gold, steel or a bi-color steel & 18k yellow gold option. The Rolex Yacht-Master is available in a 37mm, 40mm, and a 42m case size. The 37mm version features a steel case with Everose bezel and bracelet links, the 40mm variations are available in a Rolesium (steel and platinum case) and an 18k Everose case with black bezel. The 42mm version is crafted from white gold with a black bezel. There are black dials and dark rhodium dials to choose from within this collection – each one equipped with a cyclops date at 3 o’clock. The 37mm and 40mm Everose watches have a matching rose gold second hand, and like the Submariner, the dial is protected by a sapphire glass lens. The Yacht-Master’s bezel is bidirectional with 60-minute graduations that are raised and polished to stand out clearly. The Yacht-Master is 100-meter water-resistant compared to the Submariner’s 300-meter water-resistant case.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

The Submarine is powered by the calibers 3135 and 3130. Both offer a 48-hour power reserve and perform at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The Caliber 3135 has received modifications since it was first developed. It is now COSC-certified and features a Paramagnetic Parachrom hairspring for enhanced mechanical efficiency.

Some Rolex Yacht-Masters are powered by the in-house Caliber 3235, which provides a longer 70-hour power reserve compared to the Submariner. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Others are powered by the Caliber 2236 with a Syloxi hairspring in silicon and high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers. It provides a 55-hour power reserve.

Both the Submariner and Yacht-Master watches feature Superlative Chronometer tested movements, meaning that they have undergone a set of stringent tests to prove their robustness, reliability, and strength under extreme conditions.

Bracelet and Clasp:

The Submariner and Yacht-Master differ in terms of their bracelets. The Yacht-Master 40mm Everose and 42mm white gold options are completed on an Oysterflex bracelet with features flexible metal blades protected underneath a high-performance elastomer. To secure around the wrist, the band features an Oysterlock safety clasp and Glidelock extension facility, enabling you to attach the bracelet over the top of heavy outdoor gear. The other Yacht-Master watches come on an Oyster bracelet with Glidelock system. The Submariner is completed on the Oyster bracelet (in options of steel, 18k yellow gold, 18k white gold or bi-color options), with a folding Oysterlock safety clasp and Glidelock extension clasp for expanding in small increments.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

The Rolex Yacht-Master watch is more expensive than the Submariner, retailing at around $12,000 as opposed to the Submariner’s $8000 price tag. On the preowned market, however, both watches sell for a similar price point since the Submariner holds its value better compared to the Yacht-Master.

Still Undecided:

The Yacht-Master, despite being available in luxurious Everose and platinum versions, has a sportier aesthetic compared to the rugged look of the Submariner, especially since some models are completed on the Oysterflex bracelet as opposed to a 3-piece Oyster bracelet. It also features a clear dial surrounded by a bidirectional rotating bezel with highly legible markers. The Submariner, on the other hand, is more suitable for diving since it features a unidirectional rotating bezel that will enable you to keep track of remaining dive time and better water resistance. It offers a short power reserve, however, and goes without the addition of the sportier Oysterflex bracelet.

When deciding between the Rolex Yacht-Master and Submariner, it is essential to consider each timepiece’s purpose and style preferences.

The Yacht-Master , with cases available in 37mm, 40mm, and 42mm, offers a water resistance of 100m, suitable for occasional aquatic activities. Conversely, the Submariner , available in 37mm, 40mm, and 41mm sizes, boasts a 300m water resistance, ideal for divers and water sports aficionados.

Ultimately, the decision between the Rolex Yacht-Master and Submariner comes down to personal preferences, intended use, and style considerations.

The following sections will dive deeper into the major aspects in which the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Submariner Date differ.

Heritage and Brand

The history of Submariner , began in 1953, didn’t merely indicate time but curated a legacy that struck a balance between daily utility and diver-friendly functionality, augmented by a date feature. Its path, traversed by icons like James Bond and Jacques Cousteau , became synonymous with a daring spirit.

In contrast, the Yacht-Master, casting its sails in 1992 , embarked on a journey through the elite nautical realms, immediately becoming a lighthouse of maritime luxury and pinpoint precision.

When we traverse the perception and placement of the Submariner Date, we encounter a celebration of utility enmeshed with a stately elegance, rendering it a robust diver’s companion.

Conversely, the Yacht-Master whispers of lavish sails and elite marine escapades, without compromising on the brand’s unwavering pillars, ensuring its allure is as versatile as it is luxurious.

Design and Aesthetics

Rolex Yacht-Master

The Yacht-Master dazzles with a bidirectional rotatable bezel adorned with polished, raised numerals against a matte, sand-blasted background, while exploring a luxurious and varied color palette of blues, grays, and Everose gold.

The meticulously designed dial features large, luminescent hour markers and broad hands, ensuring elegance and readability, and is available in a wide range of sizes (29mm to 42mm) to accommodate various wrist dimensions.

Conversely, the Submariner Date is renowned for its practical and rugged aesthetic, with a unidirectional rotating bezel that safeguards divers by providing bold, clear numerals and graduations. Its color scheme is classic and conservative, encapsulating the following hues:

  • Greens

All these transition smoothly from casual to formal settings.

The dial, though also legible, presents a sturdier look with its iconic Mercedes hands and a date window emphasized by a Cyclops lens . Predominantly sporting a masculine aura, it offers sizes like 37mm, 40mm, and 41mm.

The Yacht-Master, a treasure of the sea, wraps the wrist in a lavish Oyster bracelet and Everose gold ensemble, whispering of opulence with every tick of its luminescent Chromalight display under a subtly glimmering sunburst dial.

Meanwhile, the bidirectional, often sandblasted or Cerachrom ceramic bezel elegantly traces adventures across calm oceans, presenting a piece that is as much a statement of luxury as it is a functional maritime timepiece.

wearing rolex submariner 16803

In contrast, the Submariner Date is dominated by durable Oystersteel and accompanied by a unidirectional rotatable Cerachrom ceramic bezel, ensuring the safety and precision of timekeeping in the depths of the ocean.

Its Chromalight display, too, emerges as a steadfast luminescent guide in the shadowy abyss, with a metal dial quietly, solemnly safeguarding the time.

Movement and Precision

The Rolex Yacht-Master and Submariner Date, while both employing the meticulous Caliber 3235 movement and adhering to the brand’s esteemed standards of precision and reliability, present these attributes within different contexts and aesthetic appeals.

The Yacht-Master, with its Superlative Chronometer status, assures a remarkable precision of -2/+2 seconds per day, gently transcending COSC standards and mimicking the ceaseless ebb and flow of the ocean with its perpetual rotor as well as its 70-hour power reserve.

In contrast, the Submariner Date, while also powered by the Caliber 3235 and boasting the same exceptional precision, posits itself as a sturdy and steadfast timekeeper in the solitary depths of the sea with the same 70-hour power reserve.

Price Range

The price range for the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Submariner Date varies depending on the materials used for each model.

Generally, though, the Yacht-Master collection demands higher price points than the other. According to Watch Charts, it retails around S$6,444 to S$55,084 in a private sales market.

Meanwhile, the grey market may dictate more significant prices that range between S$5,106 and S$323,087 . The most exclusive and expensive Yacht-Master is typically bedazzled by gems and other stones.

On the other hand, the Rolex Submariner Date may retail for S$14,350 to S$54,500 but can be sold in a secondary market for S$9,565 to S$563,677 , depending on the model, demand, rarity, gems and materials used, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. why is the yacht-master not as popular as the submariner.

The Yacht-Master is not as popular as the Submariner mainly because the Submariner has a longer history and a more established reputation in the watch world of professional diving.

Launched in 1953, the Submariner’s models quickly became iconic dive watches , while the Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as a more luxurious and less rugged alternative. Additionally, the Submariner has been featured in various James Bond movies, which further boosts its popularity and recognition.

2. Which Submariner is the Most Popular?

The most popular Submariner model is subjective and may vary depending on personal preferences. However, the reference 116610LN (stainless steel model with black dial and black Cerachrom bezel) is often considered one of the most sought-after models.

Its timeless design, durability, and Rolex’s signature Oyster case with a water resistance of up to 300 meters make it a popular choice among watch lovers.

While both watches offer excellent time-keeping and precision qualities, where you intended to use it is vital. If you want a dressy watch that can also be used for nautical adventures, the Yacht-Master is the way to go. Meanwhile, if your penchant lies in diving and want a watch that can succumb to the underwater pressure, the Submariner Date is the better choice.

Key Takeaways

  • The Yacht-Master and the Submariner Date employ the Caliber 3235 movement, reflecting Rolex’s dedication to precision.

  • Design-wise, the Yacht-Master presents a polished aesthetic adaptable to various settings, while the Submariner Date remains a hallmark of diving utility with a bolder presence.

Rolex yacht-master vs. submariner: key differences.

Learn about the distinction between Rolex Yacht-Master and Submariner: A detailed comparison of their intended-use, features, and styles.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Rolex stands as a symbol of prestige and excellence in the world of luxury watches. Among its distinguished collections, the Yacht-Master and Submariner models hold special places in the hearts of watch enthusiasts. Both models offer unique features and cater to different lifestyles and preferences.

In this article, we will explore the key differences between the Yacht-Master and Submariner, helping you decide which model best suits your needs.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs. Submariner: Intended Use

The primary distinction between the Yacht-Master and Submariner lies in their intended use. Rolex designed the Yacht-Master as a luxury sailing watch, perfect for those who enjoy spending time on the water but prefer a sophisticated and elegant timepiece. On the other hand, the Submariner is a professional diving watch, renowned for its robustness and functionality under extreme conditions. This model is ideal for divers and adventure seekers who require a reliable and durable watch.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs. Submariner: Design Differences

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Case Materials

When comparing the Yacht-Master vs. Submariner, you will notice differences in case materials. The Yacht-Master is available in a variety of luxurious materials, including Rolesium (a combination of stainless steel and platinum), 18k Everose gold, and 18k yellow gold. These materials give the Yacht-Master a refined and elegant look. In contrast, the Submariner typically features a more utilitarian design, with cases made from Oystersteel, a robust and corrosion-resistant alloy that ensures durability and longevity.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Bezel Functions

The bezel functions also differ between the two models. The Yacht-Master features a bidirectional rotating bezel with a 60-minute graduated scale, allowing sailors to measure time intervals, such as the distance between buoys. The bezel is often made from precious materials like platinum or Cerachrom. Rolex equipped the Submariner with a unidirectional rotating bezel with a 60-minute graduated scale to help divers track their underwater time accurately. The bezel’s unidirectional movement ensures that even if it is accidentally moved, it can only shorten the dive time, thus providing an added safety feature.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Dial Options

The dial options for the Yacht-Master vs. Submariner also showcase their different purposes. The Yacht-Master dials often feature luxurious finishes, such as sunburst or matte effects, and are available in a variety of colors, including blue, rhodium, and mother-of-pearl. The hour markers are typically crafted from 18k gold to prevent tarnishing. The Submariner, in contrast, offers a more straightforward design with dials in classic black or blue. The hour markers are large and filled with Chromalight, providing exceptional legibility even in the darkest conditions.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Water Resistance

Water resistance is a critical factor for both models, but the Submariner offers greater depth capabilities. The Yacht-Master is water-resistant up to 100 meters (330 feet), making it suitable for sailing and other water-related activities. However, the Submariner is water-resistant up to 300 meters (1,000 feet), making it the ideal choice for professional divers and those who require a watch that can withstand extreme underwater conditions.

Movement and Power Reserve

Rolex powers both the Yacht-Master and Submariner with high-precision movements, but there are distinctions worth noting. Rolex equips the Yacht-Master with the Caliber 3235 or 2236 (depending on the model size), featuring a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. These movements incorporate Rolex’s Chronergy escapement, which enhances the watch’s efficiency and reliability.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs. Submariner: Unique Features

Its unidirectional bezel, superior water resistance, and highly legible dial make it the go-to choice for divers and adventurers. Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes).

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

yacht master 40 vs submariner

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

yacht master 40 vs submariner

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

yacht master 40 vs submariner

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet.

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. However there is also another side to the watch, and to the Rolex approach to luxury in general: the taking of such pains to produce technical perfection that technical perfection becomes a luxury in itself.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

The Everose Rolex Yachtmaster, in Rolex Everose, with Everose Oysterclasp and Oysterflex bracelet, as shown, $22,000 in 37 mm, and $24,950 in 40 mm. For more info, check out Rolex.com.

Among the diverse Rolex range, two models have captivated enthusiasts and collectors alike: the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Submariner. Both watches, steeped in history and adorned with Rolex’s renowned precision engineering, offer distinct features and aesthetic appeal. This article delves into a detailed comparison of the Yacht-Master and Submariner, considering their design, functionality, performance, and value, particularly from a UK perspective.

Historical Context

Rolex submariner: pioneering underwater exploration.

The Rolex Submariner’s introduction in 1953 marked a significant milestone in watchmaking. Designed initially for divers, it became an instant classic, setting the benchmark for what a dive watch should be.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Over the years, the Submariner has undergone various enhancements in terms of water resistance, materials, and movement technology, evolving from a practical tool for divers to an emblem of style and rugged elegance. The model’s association with iconic figures, including James Bond in several films, has further cemented its status in popular culture.

Rolex Yacht-Master: From Sea to Shore

While the Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992, its conceptual roots can be traced back to the Submariner. However, Rolex envisioned the Yacht-Master as a more luxurious counterpart, tailored not for the depths of the ocean but for the deck of a yacht.

This model represents a blend of Rolex’s nautical heritage with a more lifestyle-oriented approach. Over the years, the Yacht-Master has been offered in various sizes and materials, including the introduction of the Yacht-Master II in 2007, featuring a regatta timer, catering to the needs of professional sailors.

Design and Aesthetics

Submariner: the practical choice.

The Rolex Submariner’s design is instantly recognisable with its bold, simple lines. The large, luminescent hour markers and hands on the dial are designed for maximum legibility in dark underwater conditions. The Submariner’s bezel, with its knurled edge, is designed for easy grip underwater, even with gloves. The overall aesthetic of the Submariner is one of utilitarian elegance, a watch that is at home both in the depths of the ocean and in a formal setting.

Yacht-Master: Sophistication Meets Sportiness

In contrast, the Rolex Yacht-Master’s design is more polished and varied. While it retains the fundamental robustness of Rolex’s sports watches, it adds a layer of luxury. The bezel is more ornate, often featuring precious metals, and the dial comes in various colours and finishes, offering a more personalised look. The Yacht-Master’s case design is slightly more rounded and less bulky than the Submariner, giving it a sleeker profile on the wrist.

Functionality and Performance

Submariner: engineered for the depths.

The Submariner’s functionality is deeply rooted in its diving heritage. Its rotating bezel allows divers to accurately and safely monitor diving time and decompression stops. The watch’s Oyster case, equipped with a Triplock winding crown, ensures waterproofness to a depth of 300 metres. The Submariner’s movement, either the calibre 3135 or the more recent 3230, is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests.

Yacht-Master: Nautical Precision

The Yacht-Master, while also built to be robust and waterproof, focuses more on surface water sports and yachting needs. Its water resistance is slightly lower than the Submariner’s, at 100 metres, which is more than adequate for most water-related activities except deep-sea diving. The Yacht-Master’s movement, the calibre 3235, offers superior accuracy and a power reserve of up to 70 hours. Its more intricate bezel, while not specifically designed for diving, serves well in timing events during sailing and other surface water activities.

Material and Build Quality

Submariner: a testament to durability.

The Rolex Submariner is renowned for its robustness, primarily due to the use of Oystersteel, a material exclusive to Rolex. This steel belongs to the 904L family, known for its exceptional anti-corrosion properties, crucial for withstanding harsh marine environments. The Submariner’s crystal is made from scratch-resistant sapphire, ensuring the dial remains unblemished over years of use. The attention to detail in its construction ensures that each Submariner watch can withstand the extreme pressures of deep-sea diving, making it a reliable tool for professional divers.

Yacht-Master: Combining Strength with Elegance

The Rolex Yacht-Master, while sharing the Submariner’s commitment to quality, opts for a blend of materials that lean towards luxury. It is available in a variety of finishes, including Rolesium (a combination of steel and platinum), yellow gold, and Everose gold (Rolex’s exclusive pink gold alloy). These materials are not only chosen for their aesthetic appeal but also for their durability and resistance to elements. The Yacht-Master’s sapphire crystal and robust case construction also ensure longevity and resilience, albeit with a more polished and refined finish suitable for a luxury sports watch .

Price and Value

Submariner: an investment beyond time.

In the UK, the price of the Rolex Submariner reflects its status as an iconic diver’s watch. The cost varies depending on the specific model and materials but generally starts at around £7,150 for the basic steel model. Vintage Submariner models, especially those with a notable history or unique features, can fetch significantly higher prices on the secondary market. The Submariner is not just a purchase but an investment, known for its ability to hold and often increase in value over time.

Yacht-Master: Luxury at a Premium

Rolex Yacht-Master pricing , starting at around £9,600 in the UK, is positioned as a more luxurious option. Models featuring precious metals or unique designs can command higher prices. The Yacht-Master’s value in the secondary market is generally stable, though it does not typically see the same level of appreciation as the Submariner. Its value is more tied to its luxury status and the appeal of its design and materials rather than its history or functionality as a diver’s watch .

Market Perception and User Demographics

Submariner: universally revered.

The Rolex Submariner enjoys a broad and diverse appeal, transcending various demographics. It is favoured by both watch enthusiasts and the general public for its history, functionality, and design. Its reputation as a durable and reliable tool watch attracts professionals and adventurers, while its iconic status and aesthetic appeal make it a popular choice among collectors, celebrities, and those in corporate and formal settings. The Submariner is often seen as a symbol of achievement and a staple in any watch collection .

Yacht-Master: The Choice of the Refined

The Rolex Yacht-Master caters to a more niche market compared to the Submariner. It is often chosen by individuals who are drawn to its blend of sportiness and luxury. The Yacht-Master is particularly popular among the yachting community and those who engage in luxury leisure activities. Its sophisticated design and use of precious materials make it a favoured accessory in high-end social settings. While it may not have the universal appeal of the Submariner, the Yacht-Master is highly regarded among those who value elegance and luxury in their timepieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main differences between the rolex yacht-master and submariner.

The Rolex Yacht-Master is designed as a luxury sports watch, suitable for yachting and leisure activities, featuring a variety of sizes and luxurious materials like platinum and gold. The Submariner, on the other hand, is a professional diver’s watch, water-resistant up to 300 metres, and made primarily from Oystersteel for enhanced durability. The Submariner has a more utilitarian design, whereas the Yacht-Master offers a balance of elegance and sportiness.

Is the Rolex Submariner more expensive than the Yacht-Master?

Generally, the Rolex Submariner is less expensive than the Yacht-Master. In the UK, the Submariner’s price starts at around £7,150 for the basic steel model, while the Yacht-Master begins at approximately £9,600. However, prices vary based on materials and specific model features. The Submariner’s price can rise significantly for vintage or special editions.

Can the Rolex Yacht-Master be used for diving like the Submariner?

While the Rolex Yacht-Master is water-resistant to 100 metres and suitable for swimming and surface water sports, it is not designed for deep-sea diving like the Submariner. The Submariner is specifically engineered for diving, with a water resistance of up to 300 metres and a unidirectional rotatable bezel for tracking decompression times.

Which watch is better for an investment, the Yacht-Master or the Submariner?

The Rolex Submariner is often considered a better investment. It retains its value exceptionally well and, in some cases, appreciates over time, especially for vintage or rare models. The Yacht-Master also retains value but is more valued as a luxury timepiece rather than for potential appreciation, making the Submariner a more popular choice for investors.

Are there different size options available for the Yacht-Master and Submariner?

The Rolex Yacht-Master offers more size variety, with models available in 37mm, 40mm, and 42mm, catering to different wrist sizes and preferences. The Submariner is traditionally available in a 40mm size, although Rolex has introduced a 41mm model in recent years. This difference allows the Yacht-Master to offer more versatility in terms of styling and fit.

Rolex Submariner Vs Yacht-Master Review

Rolex vs rolex.

The Sub vs the Yacht Master

rolex-submariner

In the prestigious back catalogue of Rolex watches, perhaps two of the most iconic pieces in the collection are the Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Yacht-Master. While one is almost 40 years older than the other, they’re both history-makers for watch-lovers.

However, if you’re looking to purchase one of these watches, which is the best one to go for? The truth is, you can’t really go wrong with either watch, but there are some significant differences which could sway your choice. To help you find your ideal watch between two titans in the watch world, here’s a rundown on the key features, differences and benefits.

Rolex

History Of The Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner was launched in 1953 as the diver’s watch. It was the first watch on the market to come with water resistance up to 100 metres. The watch was perfectly designed for divers, not only thanks to its water resistance but also the rotating bezel that could help divers track how long they’ve spent underwater. The watch also has luminous features to improve readability on the watch when diving in the murkiest of water.

Whilst the Rolex Submariner was the first watch to deliver 100m water resistance; it wasn’t seen as the first dive watch. Omega Marine and several Navy and Special Forces watches were seen as dive watches. That said, it was Rolex who dedicated time to creating the perfect dive timepiece and with iterations from 1953 to 2020, the watch has made a name as an evolutionary piece that keeps divers at the forefront of its design.

History Of The Rolex Yacht-Master

The history of the Rolex Yacht-Master actually piggy-backs off the Rolex Submariner, despite creating two entirely different watches. The Rolex Yacht-Master was launched in 1992. This was the first new model that Rolex introduced in 28 years.

However, Rolex legend has it that the designers weren’t trying to come up with a new model. Instead, Rolex wanted to significantly update their Rolex Submariner design. The designs that came back were admired but were too different from the Submariner look. It was feared that Submariner fans would not be happy with such a radical change to the design.

And so, these designs were transformed into a brand-new model, the Rolex Yacht-Master.

What’s The Difference Between The Rolex Submariner And Yacht-Master?

There are several areas where the Submariner and Yacht-Master are different:

Water Resistance : When the Submariner was initially introduced, the watch had a water resistance of 100m. However, iterations of this watch mean it can have water resistance up to 300m thanks to its Triplock – the triple-waterproof security with three sealed areas on the watch.

In contrast, the Yacht-Master offers 100m of water resistance.

Size: The Submariner is a sleek 40mm size, ideal for readability without being too much of a statement. The Rolex Yacht-Master, however, is more tailored. The Yacht-Master comes in 37mm, 40mm and 42mm cases. The 37mm was designed as a women’s watch. However, the range in sizes can suit styles for a more subtle or rugged timepiece, depending on personal preference.

Case Material : The Yacht-Master offers a stainless steel, everose, rolesor (a mix of steel and gold) and roselium (a mix of stainless steel and platinum) as case materials. In contrast, the Submariner offers a stainless steel case.

Bezel: The Submariner bezel is unidirectional to help divers keep better track of their dive time. The Yacht-Master, instead, offers a bidirectional rotating bezel.

Cost: To buy them from new, the Yacht-Master is a greater investment compared to a Submariner. However, in terms of long-term investment, both watches hold their value. Submariners traditionally hold more value in the second-hand market, but this can fluctuate depending on availability, demand, and trends.

Which Rolex Is Right For You?

The Rolex Submariner is a classic and highly desirable watch and was even James Bond’s gadget of choice. However, the  Rolex Yacht-Master offers a more rugged and sportier aesthetic compared to the more casual look of the Rolex Submariner.

With both watches available in 18k white gold, yellow gold, stainless steel, as well as a multitude of different coloured faces and bezels, the difference between a Submariner and a Yacht-Master can be a style choice as the quality and impact of both watches are assured.

Both timepieces boast a rich history, unparalleled craftsmanship, and a loyal following among watch enthusiasts and celebrities alike. However, choosing between these two icons can be a daunting task. In this comprehensive guide, we delve deep into the Rolex Yacht-Master vs Submariner debate, exploring their history, design, functionality, and much more to help you make an informed decision.

The Historical Voyage

Rolex submariner.

The Submariner’s journey began in 1953, marking a significant milestone in watchmaking as the first diver’s watch waterproof to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet), later enhanced to 300 meters (1,000 feet). Its robust design, featuring a graduated rotatable bezel, luminescent display, and large hands and markers, set a new standard for dive watches.

Steel Rolex Submariner

Rolex Yacht-Master

The Yacht-Master, introduced in 1992, celebrates Rolex’s storied relationship with the sailing world. As a relatively newer addition to the Rolex family, it quickly distinguished itself with its luxurious aesthetics and functionality, becoming a symbol of sophistication on and off the high seas.

Yacht-Master’s Luxurious Flair

The Yacht-Master, on the other hand, opts for opulence with its bidirectional platinum or gold bezel and polished finish. It stands out with its slightly more flamboyant design, making it a favorite among those who prefer a touch of luxury with their sportiness.

The Heartbeat: Movements and Functionality

Submariner’s precision.

Powered by Rolex’s Cal. 3135 (and more recently the Cal. 3235), the Submariner is a testament to reliability and precision, boasting a power reserve of up to 70 hours and waterproofness that’s become the benchmark for dive watches.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Yacht-Master’s Sophistication

The Yacht-Master features the advanced Caliber 3235 movement, offering enhanced efficiency and a power reserve of up to 70 hours. While also capable of braving the elements, it is more a symbol of luxury leisure than an outright tool watch.

Celestial Timekeeping: Stars and Their Watches

Both watches have adorned the wrists of numerous celebrities, adding to their allure and mystique.

Submariner’s Star Power

Icons like Sean Connery, Steve McQueen, and more recently, Tom Hardy, have favored the Submariner, underscoring its appeal across different eras.

Yacht-Master’s Celebrity Admirers

The Yacht-Master is no stranger to celebrity wrists either, with luminaries such as Ellen DeGeneres and Brad Pitt showcasing its versatile elegance.

The Verdict: Yacht-Master vs. Submariner

Ultimately, the choice between a Rolex Yacht-Master and a Submariner boils down to personal preference and lifestyle. The Submariner, with its storied history and functional prowess, appeals to those who value durability and a classic look. The Yacht-Master, with its luxurious details and polished finish, is suited for those who seek a blend of high-performance and high-style.

Whether you’re charting the depths of the ocean or navigating the high seas of society, both the Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Yacht-Master offer unmatched quality, reliability, and prestige. As you weigh your options, remember: there’s no wrong choice in the quest for the perfect Rolex.

Another Head To Head: Yacht Master 40 vs Submariner

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Eisenhammer

I'll take the Sub all day long. The YM has never done anything for me. My opinion...it's a watch that is trying too hard to find its way.

importstunna

That's a tough one. I would usually go with the Sub but ever since I saw that exact YM in the wild, it's a toss up for me. That YM is beautiful in person, and so different than the Sub which you find everywhere. Can't go wrong with either!

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Dogbert_is_fat said: FirstF80InSpace said: I have both. I prefer the YM because it's way more comfortable and I love the blue dial. SubC is my beater watch because of the brushed links and ceramic bezel. Click to expand...

yacht master 40 vs submariner

I'd go for the SubC ND before I went with the stainless rhodium dialed YM. However, if I could afford the YM 40mm in rose gold with the black rubber strap I'd be dropping the $24K MSRP in a heartbeat. Bringing the sunburst blue dialed YM into the mix does make it more difficult, but I think the SubC ND would get more wrist time for it's ability to be dressed up or down more easily and it's ease of 'set-n-go' with the lack of the date function. (I know you referenced a SubC, but I'd strongly urge you to consider a SubC ND.) If I already owned a SubC (Date or No Date) I'd be eyeing that blue dialed YM very seriously - because I know I can't afford a $24K Rose Gold YM when I could get 2 stainless sports models for that price...

yacht master 40 vs submariner

I love the blue dial YM. It is really different and isn't the most copied watch in history. If it's too dressy pair it with an OP for daily beating and your set. The sub is a great watch but next to the YM is just boring.

lo_scrivano said: Small technicality but a SubC is the 114060 which is the standard Submariner which has no date. The ND is just something we WISers add in. The date version would be a SubC Date. Point being OP was probably referencing the ND. Or maybe they were just comparing aesthetics and practicality regardless of date. Click to expand...

Def would have said SubC until I saw that blue YM. What a stunner!

Tough one to advise on as it's hard to read your mind :-! Personally, I would go with the Sub. Subs a classic, the yachtmaster is the flash new boy ...you can try both , then decide. Cheers.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

Of the 2 in the original post I would go for the YM as I loathe the fat lugs on the Sub D/ND If we went back a generation to the 5 digit references it would be a harder choice for me

yacht master 40 vs submariner

My Preference is the Sub due to my lifestyle, it just covers all the bases so well. It's my work watch, weekend watch, formal watch, tropical scuba holiday watch. That rose gold yachtmaster is beautiful though... Either way you are getting an awesome watch.

yacht master 40 vs submariner

I have a SubC. I admire the YM blue dial, but prefer the SubC if I were limited to only 1. The gold YM with the OF strap is a non starter for me. I can't accept a PM watch on a rubber strap. I had the chance to buy that YM or even a Daytona PM on the rubber strap but could not do it. I consolidated some pieces and did buy a YG Sub black dial.

Sub by a mile.

The Submariner is a nice watch, it goes well with casual or formal wear. You will get the value for your hard earned money. The Yachtmaster is a nice watch, it has more polished areas and looks great with business attire. IMO I will pick the sub over the YM

The blue YM does wonders for me. So does the everose on the oysterflex. Not a fan of the black subs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

yacht master 40 vs submariner

sub all day....not a fan of the ym bezel...

Both are beautiful watches, you can never go wrong choosing either but i would for SubC on this i'm a big fan of sport watches and also a collector, my opinion is based on personal preference though.

For me it's the blue YM. It's actually going to be my first Rolex. Hopefully I'll have it in my hands next week.

The YM. It has earned growing cachet if you're looking to go beyond the Submariner’s ubiquity. It’s nautical-inspired looks signal money and class, but not in an especially ostentatious way.

Launched in 1953, the Rolex Submariner is the first divers’ wristwatch to be waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet) – now 300 metres (1,000 feet). Its major features, such as the graduated rotatable bezel, the luminescent display, the large hands and hour markers, have been a driving force in the creation of the long line of Rolex divers’ watches which followed.

The Submariner is an iconic timepiece whose renown now extends beyond the professional world it was first designed for. The Submariner, the ultimate standard.

A true divers’ watch by design

As an underwater survival tool, this watch’s design has been entirely dictated by the practical needs of divers. Since 1953, the Submariner has evolved technically and aesthetically as it has been endowed with features to improve overall functionality. The first watch was a pioneer and its subsequent versions have continued to set the benchmark for divers’ watches.

Monitor diving time

The Submariner’s unidirectional rotatable bezel has knurled edges that offer excellent grip when setting the dive time, even when wearing gloves. It rotates notch by notch, accompanied by distinctive clicks. Its engraved 60-minute graduation allows divers to monitor their time underwater. Manufactured by Rolex from a hard, corrosion-resistant ceramic, the Cerachrom bezel insert is virtually scratchproof and its colour is unaffected by ultraviolet rays, seawater or water that is chlorinated. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode.

The Submariner’s unidirectional rotatable bezel is key to the functionality of the watch.

Triple waterproofness system

The Submariner’s Oyster case, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 300 metres (1,000 feet), provides the movement with optimal protection from water and dust. The Triplock winding crown – fitted with a triple waterproofness system – screws down securely against the case, ensuring watertight security.

Chromalight display

The Chromalight display is an innovation that improves visibility in dark environments, an essential feature for divers. An innovative luminescent material emitting a blue glow is applied to the hands, hour markers and the capsule on the bezel.

Hour markers in simple shapes – triangle, circle, rectangle – and broad hour and minute hands enable instant and reliable reading to prevent any risk of confusion underwater.

The Rolex Watches of Che Guevara

Vintage Rolex Explorer

Precision Timekeeping in a High-End Tool Watch

Although Rolex watches are an international symbol of wealth, success and personal accomplishment, they can often be found on the wrists of the most unexpected individuals. Rolex has always produced precision timekeeping devices ; however, they were historically viewed as high-end tool watches, rather than luxury items. As a result, some of the most interesting and unexpected figures throughout history have chosen to wear a Rolex.

stainless steel Submariner Date

As a communist revolutionary leader, Ernesto “Che” Guevara did not affix a great deal of value to many material possessions. Despite a general disdain for wealth, excess, and inequality, Che Guevara actually owned several different Rolex collections throughout his lifetime.

Rolex watches have never been considered inexpensive; however, they previously occupied a much more accessible price range. As a point of reference, a stainless steel Submariner Date retailed for $180 in 1957. Adjusting for inflation, that would still only be equal to roughly $1,600 today. To add some additional perspective, a brand-new, stainless steel Submariner Date now costs $8,550.

It is very likely that Che Guevara wore an early reference Submariner during the first part of his revolutionary career; however the watch that most frequently makes an appearance in pictures with him, is his GMT-Master, reference 1675 – a gift from fellow communist leader, Fidel Castro.

Wrist Shot Rolex GMT 1675

Castro was a huge fan of Rolex watches; many photographs exist of him simultaneously wearing two different Rolex on the same wrist. One was set to local time in Havana; the other displayed the time in Moscow. Castro liked the brand so much that he frequently gave out Rolex watches to his high-level commanders and associates.

It is confirmed that Che Guevara received at least two different Rolex watches from Castro during the late 1950’s and 1960’s. Precision timepieces were a necessary item of equipment for field commanders, especially in the pre-quartz watch era. An accurate watch was crucial for coordinating and synchronizing military operations, and the reliability and precision of Rolex watches made them an obvious choice.

The first Rolex Guevara received was in 1958 when Castro promoted him to the position of Comandante ; however, less than a year later, Che gave that very same watch to his father. In 1966, Castro gave Guevara a second Rolex – right before he left Cuba for Bolivia.

When Che Guevara was killed on October 9 th , 1967, CIA operative Félix Rodríguez removed Guevara’s Rolex GMT-Master from the wrist of his corpse; the watch remains in his possession to this day. A unique quality about Rolex is the brand’s ability to fit in among different income levels and lifestyles. From movie stars to soldiers, U.S. presidents to communist revolutionaries, it appears as though everyone can appreciate the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Rolex watches.
