SO MUCH FUN! If you are looking for something different to do on these hot summer days head down to Funcats in South Perth and hire one of the little catamarans. I went a year ago and I think the prices were around $35 for an hour, They could have changed since then. The friendly staff give you a very brief run down of how to sail these boats and then your on your way. These are so easy to sail & if they tip (like our friends did) they are equally as easy to pull back up. We had such a fun day & will have to head back down very soon to try it again. :)

catamaran hire south perth

I would definitely not recommend Funcats. My friend and I hired stand up paddle boards from them and as we were about to hire them we observed one of their catamaran that was not being used sailing away into the river. The lady behind the counter almost joked about it saying "oh one of our boats is running away" and my friend and I replied somewhat concerned but she said it was fine and their staff would go and get it. It was quite windy this day and it was my first time paddle boarding so I was a little worried with how quickly I had gone out into the deeper part of the river so I was turning myself around and coming into shore when I was struck by another one of Funcats catamaran that was not properly secured to the shore. It all happened so quickly as the wind made the catamaran turn quickly and come for me that I did not have time to think what to do. The front point of the catamaran hit my upper thigh with a lot of force. It pushed me under the catamaran and I was scared that my head was going to be hit as the catamaran sailed over the top of me. Luckily I wasn't hit on the head but when I got to shore my leg was already starting to swell and very painful and I was visibly shaken up. Thankfully kind onlookers who witnessed the incident came to see if I was okay and offered me water and ice. Before a member of the public gave me ice from their esky, someone asked a Funcats staff member if they had any ice and they replied that they didn't. I just think it was really poor the way they handled the incident. For starters it never should have happened, as they should be keeping more of an eye on the boats and pulling them in straight away after customers return them. This obviously isn't a one off situation since we witnessed two separate boats sailing off unattended within the space of half an hour. Secondly, they should have ice and a first aid kit and should have been properly checking that I was okay. I only had a half-hearted sorry from two of the junior members of staff. The lady behind the counter never came out to see if I was okay and my friend eventually had to go and see her to ask for a refund. Several of the witnesses were shocked at Funcats lack of concern and told me to report them. I contacted them via email afterwards to try and resolve this situation but they were amendment that they did nothing wrong and it was the fault of the customers that hired the catamarans for not pulling them into shore properly... It is now 10 days since the incident and I still have a huge purple bruise on my leg. I was in so much pain the day after that I couldn't even sit down or go to work. While I was paddleboarding there was a man with his young child on the front of another paddleboard and it is scary to think what could have happened if the catamaran had hit a child or even if it hit me in the head, I am just grateful that it hit me on a fleshy part of the leg as I can't image the pain I would be in if it had hit me elsewhere. Clearly customer and public safety is not at the forefront of Funcats concerns which is a worry given they are operating a business on open water, and their customer service is appalling.

capella catamaran hire perth

Capella is a modern 12.5 metre sailing catamaran with several design innovations which set her apart from the rest. A Schionning Cosmos 1250, designed by Andy Jensen, she is purpose built for entertaining groups.  She boast a comfortable indoor saloon that can seat 12, with 360 degree views inside and out, plus a large stern deck and huge bow space for further 25 (total legal capacity 40 including crew).

With a sophisticated engineering system, Capella’s mast can be lowered giving her the ability to sail under the bridges and make full use of navigable waters up the Swan River and out into the Indian Ocean (subject to seasonality).  Lifting the daggerboards and rudders she can go right up to the beach and over shallow reef. A lowering rear swim platform allows easy access to the water for disabled or less mobile guests.

She was designed and constructed with the safety and comfort of guests as a primary consideration. The level of stability that a catamaran like Capella offers must be experienced to be believed. Just imagine being able to sip your choice of wine from a real wine glass whilst under full sail and knowing that when you place it down it will not go anywhere! The Schionning designed hull with its unequalled stability offers a smooth, gliding ride. The superstructure and deck layout was tailor designed to suit charter work and entertainment requirements. The vessel is built to very high standards and complies to the USL codes 1D for 38 day passengers and 2 crew and 1B for 10 overnight passengers and 3 crew for ocean passages.

An interesting but little known fact is that she’s actually a born and bred Fremantle local. Yep!  She was built right here in Fremantle by two local men over a period of 2 years between 2000 and 2002.  Head on over to our History page to see pictures of her construction and learn about her history and where the name ‘Capella’ originates from.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Perth

In the glittering waters of Perth, Western Australia, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran can shape your maritime adventure. Both vessels offer unique experiences, and Yachting.Rent is here to guide you through the nuances of each, ensuring your voyage in Perth’s pristine waters is both memorable and tailored to your preferences.

Sailing Boats: The Traditional Charm A sailing boat, with its single hull and timeless design, is the epitome of classic sailing. For those who seek an authentic connection with the sea, sailing boats provide an intimate feel of the water, with the boat’s gentle tilt responding to the ocean’s whims. Their slender design allows for smooth navigation through narrow channels, making them ideal for exploring Perth’s intricate coastline and the nooks of the Swan River. If it’s the romance of traditional sailing you’re after, with the wind in your sails and the horizon as your guide, then a sailing boat is your vessel of choice.

Catamarans: The Modern Luxury Catamarans, with their twin hulls, bring stability, space, and speed to the sailing experience. Their design ensures a flat and stable voyage, making them perfect for those who are new to sailing or prefer a more laid-back experience. The spacious decks and cabins of a catamaran are synonymous with luxury, offering ample room for relaxation, sunbathing, or hosting a group of friends. With their shallow draft, catamarans can anchor closer to shore, allowing easier access to Perth’s secluded beaches and coves. For those who desire a blend of comfort, speed, and modernity, catamarans stand out as the go-to choice.

Your Journey with Yachting.Rent Perth’s diverse maritime landscape, with its tranquil river stretches, bustling port areas, and expansive ocean vistas, demands a vessel that aligns with your vision of the perfect sail. Whether it’s the allure of tradition with a sailing boat or the promise of modern luxury in a catamaran, Yachting.Rent offers a fleet that caters to every sailor’s dream.

Our team is dedicated to understanding your needs, recommending the ideal vessel, and ensuring your journey in Perth’s waters is seamless. From the initial charter process to providing insights on the best sailing routes, anchorage spots, and local secrets, we are your trusted partners in crafting the ultimate Perth sailing experience.

In the end, whether you choose the rhythmic dance of a sailing boat or the steady grace of a catamaran, the azure waters of Perth promise an unforgettable voyage. Let Yachting.Rent elevate that experience, turning your sailing dreams into cherished memories.

Western Australia's oceans are home to a haven of thousands of fish and marine creatures, great and small. Sounds like the perfect yacht charter vacation. The coastal offshore winds provide the perfect environment for sailing yachts, year round. The summer months around Perth are hot with an average temperature of between 17 and 29 degrees Celsius. Just off Perth, you'll find Rottnest Island. Thousands of people flock there every year to enjoy its preserved natural waters and wildlife. Yacht charters

You can also find a variety of yacht charters on RedBalloon that are the perfect luxurious experiences to treat yourself or someone else to. Some of our top selling yacht charters include:

  • Private luxury yacht, dinner, bed and breakfast for 2 people : When it comes to romantic evenings, this is as good as it gets… lazing on a luxury yacht, enjoying delicious cuisine and marvelling at the lights of the our city reflecting on the waters of Sydney Harbour. Your stay aboard will see you waking up on the beautiful Harbour!
  • Luxury yacht cruise and 2 course dining experience for 2 people : Sit back and enjoy the stunning Melbourne scenery or participate in sailing the yacht, it’s up to you! Once your cruise is complete you will enjoy a beautiful lunch or dinner at a contemporary restaurant on the water’s edge.
  • Romantic private yacht cruise and seafood platter for 2 people : Cruise the glorious Pittwater in style on a skippered luxury yacht charter for your own use. Find a secluded bay or go for a swim; an experienced skipper will take you wherever you want to go! Moor up and enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh seafood.

How to sail?

At RedBalloon, we hear so many sailing first timers ask: how do I sail? Or what do I need to sail a boat? These are valuable questions when it comes to sailing basics, but rest-assured!RedBalloon have rustled up the most efficient specialists who have extensive experience in Australian sailing. And the best part? These wonderful specialists have each taken the time to design special experiences for you to enjoy, whatever your boat sailing skills.

Most people inexperienced in sailing think sailing yacht is exactly like the Sydney to Hobart race – physically demanding with you and your crew up against the gruelling open seas. This is not so! At RedBalloon we have different kind of activities. Our sailing sport has more luxury yacht experiences with delicious chef-cooked meals and champagne, or a day cruise with lunch on board a tall ship fresh banquet and drinks, or you could gently sip and sail a twilight cruise with your partner in crime for a romantic night and change of scenery.

From sailing Sydney, sail Melbourne to sailing around north and west of Australia, RedBalloon have so many sailing cruises to choose from. There are morning sail boats that include coffee and breakfast in Queensland, there are luxury sailing yacht cruises with dinner and wine for two on waters edge in Melbourne, you can even climb the mast of a tall ship at The Rocks in Sydney where you could yawp a big old: ‘Ahoy there!’

Have you ever wanted to go on one of our sailing tours? If you fall in love with an experience that’s not in your local state or area, why not make a trip out of it and travel there. That would really add to the adventure! Sailing cruises are also loads of fun, but which one do you choose? That answer will definitely come down to what kind of activity you want. Love a thrilling ride? Then you’ll love the Thundercat Tour across the Whitsundays . During this experience, you’ll get to snorkel and enjoy a yummy lunch that’s provided. Looking for something more romantic? Why not sail into the sunset on a luxury yacht in the heart of DarlingHarbour. Your skipper will show you the sights on this private RedBalloon experience where you can sit back and enjoy the complimentary bottle of wine.

What to wear on a sailing trip?

But the biggest question on everyone’s lips is: what to wear! A stripy shirt and a fisherman’s sailing cap of course! Just kidding. Although you could very well wear these delightful items, we do however recommend:

  • Flat shoes with rubber soles, preferably covered so as not to cause any slipping on deck or other accidents! Comfortable and suitable clothing: as much as romantic, flowy clothing might be an attractive option, it may not be the most practical, so we recommend dressing in comfy clothes.
  • Pack extra layers: the wind could pick up at any moment, so make sure you have a cardi or lightweight layers handy.
  • Sunglasses: a must-pack item especially if you’re going in the day. Morning sailing tours or sailing cruises won’t be as much fun if you’re squinting the whole time.
  • Sun protection: this is important to remember even on cold days. Make sure you bring along enough sunscreen for everyone in your party as there’s bound to be someone who did not slip slop slap before embarking on their day.

Discover these sailing cruises and yacht charters plus plenty more experiences with our entire range of water sports. From thrilling jet boat rides to magnificent snorkelling adventures, you’ll find plenty of amazing water sports that are perfect for exploring the open ocean or underwater world.

The Best Boat Hire in Perth

Disclosure: We love how our audience helps us grow. This post may contain affiliate links. Please check our disclosure policy for more information.

Hire a boat in Perth, Western Australia, and you won’t be disappointed with the endless options to enjoy. Meander along the protected Swan River (perfect even on a windy day), visit the number of beautiful wineries along the riverbanks, explore the characterful Freemantle, head over to the stunning Rottnest Island, venture to Garden and Carnac Islands, fall in love with Mandurah, all whilst fishing, swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and even surfing.

Watch this fantastic video for some inspiration on which islands to head to with your boat hire in Perth:

There are plenty of boat hire locations in Perth so you can choose your ideal starting point. Self-drive boat hire is available from Swan River, South Perth, Freemantle, Rottnest Island, Malaga and Mandurah. You can also tow your own boat hire and take it to any destination of your choice.

Love getting wet? Check out the best water parks in Perth for some serious splashing fun or find out where you can hire a jet ski in and around Perth!

Self-drive Boat Hire Perth

Many boat hires in Perth are available for self-drive – some don’t even require a Recreational Skippers Ticket   (or other states’ equivalent to a powerboat licence). We’ll highlight which boat hire operators do and don’t require this so you can easily see which options are best for you:

Boating West

Boating West is one of the bigger and longer established boat hires available across Perth and Western Australia. They have hire locations in Fremantle and Rottnest Island , along with Broome if you were heading north of the state.

Their boats are available to tow away, or ready waiting in the water ready for your water adventure. Vessels include the impressive Centre Cab for serious boaties, the Bow Rider for some serious fun and towing capabilities, and the Tinny – perfect for just getting out on the water. On Rottnest Island, a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB vessel) is available for hire to explore this little piece of heaven!

From the water’s perspective, all locations are ideal for soaking in views of stunning parts of Perth.

A Recreational Skippers Ticket  (or other states’ equivalent to a power boat licence) is required for all hire boats. Boating West offers boat training for this skippers ticket and private lessons for increased confidence.

catamaran hire south perth

Freemantle Boat Hire

Freemantle Boat Hire is one of the new kids on the block and offers the chance to take your own private charter in one of their self-drive boat hires. We love the saying on their website –

…and they are absolutely right! It just takes the hassle out of it!

Located near Swan River and Cockburn Sound in Freemantle, you can have the boat delivered and waiting in the water for you at any of the boat ramps in the area. If you want to create an even more personalised adventure, hook up the trailer and tow to your favourite spot.

A Recreational Skippers Ticket  (or other states’ equivalent power boat licence) is required for all hire boats.

They have three boats in their impressive lineup, including:

Centre Cab - Boat Hire Perth

The Forward Cab

  • ‘Merv’ – the Velocity 5.5m. This is the largest vessel available and is a plate aluminium forward cab, large decked fishing style vessel, certified for six passengers or up to 450kg. It features a powerful 115hp Mercury four stroke engine, Garmin GPS charts and high quality depth sounder, kill tank, lots of fishing rod storage, large covered area including an undercover cabin with glass, bait board, large esky, swim platform and ladder, fusion audio with Bluetooth and all the required safety equipment. There is a 200L fuel tank onboard, dual batteries, and ‘Merv’ requires a vehicle that can easily tow 2000kg. This vessel is extremely safe and a dry ride no matter what the conditions (within reason!).

The Bow Rider

  • ‘Derek’ – the Quintrex Freedom Sport 5.3m. This family orientated Bow Rider has a 100hp Yahama four stroke engine and is certified for six passengers or up to 450kg. With a popular Australian brand name behind it, features are a front and rear lounge, bimini shade, swim platform and ladder, carpeted floor, Garmin GPS charts and high quality depth sounder, fusion audio with Bluetooth, optional esky and all the required safety equipment. There is a 100L fuel tank onboard, dual batteries, and ‘Derek’ requires a vehicle that can easily tow 1500kg.
  • ‘Geoff’ – the Quantrx Dory 4.27m. The smallest of the fleet is this quality Tinny with a wide body, deep v hull and high tunnels, certified for four people. It is great for fishing and exploring, featuring a 25hp Yamaha four stroke engine, two bench seats, two captain chairs, bimini shade, carpeted floor, Lowrance charts and sounder and all the required safety equipment. There is a 40L fuel tank onboard, and ‘Geoff’ requires a vehicle that can easily tow 750kg.

All boats have full safety equipment (EPIRB, life jackets, flares, first aid kit, fire blanket, extinguishers and VHF radio).

The boats are surveyed to go and explore the gorgeous Rottnest Island, boasting 63 beaches and 20 bays, it’s no surprise that it is known as the beach-lovers paradise. How about Garden Island for a perfect day on the water (both islands are weather permitting)? Check this map for the boundary of partially smooth waters where the vessels are permitted.

Diving. Snorkelling. Swimming. Surfing. Fishing. Relaxing. Recharging. The choice is yours with this self-drive boat hire in Freemantle, Perth.

Smartwave Hire, Perth

Smartwave Hire operates through Searano Marine, Malaga, near Perth. These virtually unsinkable New Zealand built 4800mm poly boats are great for exploring the local coastline. Onboard there is a 50hp Honda outboard engine, reinforced transom, Garmin fish finder and chart plotter, anchor storage with anchor, bilge pump, two fishing rod holders, T-Top for sun protection and all the safety equipment required.

These boats have passed survey requirements and can operate in all open waters off Western Australia. They are surveyed for four persons to travel up to 15 nautical miles offshore but are restricted to 5 nautical miles. You can go further, but they need to be notified of your schedule. You can even take these boats to Rottnest Island!

Smartwave self-drive boat hires are available on a tow and go basis only, on a Dunbier trailer. A minimum hire period is for one day with a valid Recreational Skippers Ticket  (or other states’ equivalent to a power boat licence) and a suitable vehicle with a tow ball to pull.

In fact, Perth is the sunniest city in all of Australia, with 8 hours of sunshine enjoyed every day. Day 3: Rottnest Island

Cruise for 2 hours and arrive at Rottnest Island by midday, where you can picnic on the beach, laze around all afternoon, and enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Anchor here for the night and continue exploring the island the next day. Come afternoon, make your way to Carnac Island.

Day 4: Carnac Island

Wake up to this nature reserve, home to sea lions, and bottle-neck dolphins. The wildlife is incredible and the scenery is gorgeous. It is a little-explored island, which means you won't find a lot of tourists here. It is perfect for a tranquil and peaceful day on its beaches.

Day 5: Penguin Island

Blessed with sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, Penguin Island is home to the world's smallest penguins. You can witness the penguin colony being fed multiple times over a day. You can also enjoy the beaches with a broad range of activities, as well as nature walks in the interior of the island.
