Aside from the freighters, this may be the biggest vessel on the Great Lakes. The magnificent 209' international luxury yacht 'Scout' is in Michigan waters.

Billionaire James Berwind and his partner Kevin Clark began making sketches on a napkin of a ship designed to be a semi-permanent base from which they could explore the world. A few years and $85 million later, they set sail on their dream voyage. With a helicopter pad and a hot tub with a swim-up bar, this boat just might be nicer than your house.

The $85 million superyacht Scout was spotted June 28 on the St. Clair River heading into Lake Huron after passing under the Blue Water Bridge. As of July 1 it was anchored in Lake Huron off the east side of Mackinac Island .

The luxurious superyacht sleeps 10 guests in 5 cabins and has a crew of 17 to keep her sailing the world. Designed by London's H2 Yacht Design, a Dutch company called Hakvoort was commissioned to construct the international behemoth. With two Caterpillar engines, it can cruise at 15 knots just about anywhere in the world. (See more naval-type tech stats here .)

Of course, there are ample sundecks, areas for relaxation and spacious quarters for the guests. The "private owner’s apartment is accessed via a library studded with nautical-themed artifacts" and includes a "hidden bar area." Scout also has a helicopter pad, a jacuzzi with a swim-up bar and a greenhouse and dog park on board.

Divers Can Now Explore Historic Shipwrecks in Lake Michigan More Easily

Crews installed buoys and mooring lines to mark the locations of 19 wreck sites in the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

A white buoy attached to a yellow circular-shaped object next to water

Dozens of historic shipwrecks are submerged in Lake Michigan within the bounds of the  Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary . For interested divers and snorkelers, exploring some of these wreck sites just got easier.

This month, crews installed buoys and mooring lines near 19 of the most popular shipwrecks at the protected site. The buoys mark the locations of the wrecks, allowing scuba divers to find them faster, reports the  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ’s Caitlin Looby.

The buoys also help protect the wrecks from damage caused by anchors, since they give boaters a place to tie up while divers head down to explore, reports the  Ozaukee Press ’ Kristyn Halbig Ziehm.

“It’s an important thing to do,” Bill Moren, a member of the shipwreck advisory council, tells the Ozaukee Press . “It’s one little step to make the sanctuary more of a treasure and ensure the shipwrecks are preserved.”

The installation process began several weeks ago . On August 14, the sanctuary announced that crews had placed buoys at the last of the 19 sites.

The wrecks now marked with buoys are located between 50 and 300 feet below the surface. Four buoys were installed near shipwrecks situated in shallower waters, which makes them more accessible to  kayakers and snorkelers . (Those who aren’t interested in diving can explore several of the wrecks virtually via  3D models .)

Latitude and longitude coordinates, as well as a map of all the buoys, are available on the  sanctuary’s website . Most of the wrecks have surface buoys, but a few have subsurface buoys submerged at depths of 40 feet .

Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, located in nearby Lake Huron, has  similar buoys positioned near some of its 100 known shipwrecks.

Designated  in 2021 , the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary is one of the newest marine sanctuaries in the country. (In June, the Biden administration  created the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary in New York, bringing the total number to 16.)

The Wisconsin sanctuary encompasses 962 square miles of Lake Michigan and touches the counties of Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Ozaukee. The state of Wisconsin co-manages the site with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The sanctuary protects 36 known shipwrecks that sank between 1830 and 1930. But an estimated 60 additional shipwrecks may also be hiding at the bottom of the lake within its boundaries—and researchers are  actively searching for them.

Scientists have also mapped the lakebed of the entire sanctuary, and they’re holding educational outreach events with local teachers and students.

Within the Great Lakes more broadly, an estimated  6,000 shipwrecks are resting at the bottom of Lake Michigan, Superior, Erie, Huron and Ontario. Historians and underwater archaeologists continue to search for and identify previously undiscovered wrecks.

Just last month, researchers announced that they had located the Margaret A. Muir , a 130-foot schooner that sank in Lake Michigan in September 1893 with the  captain’s dog onboard.

When embarking on the search for the perfect boat to traverse the beautiful expanses of Lake Michigan, there are several key factors that you should always keep in mind. The size and type of boat, engine capabilities, stability and handling, as well as safety features , play critical roles in determining the best boat for your Lake Michigan adventures.

The size and type of boat you choose largely depends on what you intend to use it for. Are you a fishing enthusiast looking for a cozy and compact boat, or do you plan on hosting grand parties with larger groups? For the latter, you might consider a larger yacht or cruiser, while a fishing or bowrider boat may be more suitable for the former. Remember, Lake Michigan’s weather can be unpredictable, and larger boats generally fare better in rough waters.

The engine is literally the heart of the boat. For a smooth and enjoyable experience on Lake Michigan, your boat must have a solid and reliable engine. A diesel engine might be a good choice for larger boats due to their longevity and fuel efficiency, while gasoline engines are generally cheaper up front and offer more speed, making them a great option for smaller, sportier boats. Make sure to consider engine maintenance costs, fuel economy, and power output when making your choice.

Stability and handling are crucial for a safe and fun experience on the water. A boat with excellent stability will ensure a smooth ride even in the potentially rough waters of Lake Michigan. This goes hand in hand with handling – a boat that’s easy to steer and navigate will make your boating experience a lot more enjoyable. Look for boats with a deep-V hull design for better stability and smoother rides in choppy waters, and consider the boat’s turning capabilities and how it handles at different speeds.

Safety features are non-negotiable when choosing a boat. No matter how calm Lake Michigan appears to be, it’s always best to be prepared with a well-equipped boat. Key safety features to look out for include a well-placed and stocked first-aid kit, life vests for all passengers, fire extinguishers, and a VHF radio for communication. More advanced features could include radar systems for navigation in low visibility conditions, and bilge pumps to remove water from the hull.

As outlined, choosing the perfect boat for Lake Michigan involves carefully considering the size and type of the boat, its engine capabilities, stability and handling, as well as safety features. The right balance of these factors will ensure you have a boat that’s not only enjoyable to use, but also safe and reliable for all your Lake Michigan adventures.

Remember, size and type of boat are important factors to consider. Depending on the purpose of your boating – be it for fishing, leisure cruising, or watersports – there is a specific type and size of boat that will serve your needs best.

The engine is also paramount. Different boats require different engine capacities depending on their purpose and size. A boat with the right engine will provide the necessary power without compromising fuel efficiency or causing unnecessary strain on the engine.

Stability and handling are crucial in ensuring a pleasant boating experience. A stable boat will handle well in various water conditions, providing comfort and reducing the risk of accidents. The handling of the boat determines how easy it is for you to control and steer, which is particularly important in a huge body of water like Lake Michigan.

Lake Michigan Boating Guide

Lake Michigan Boating Guide

Table of Contents

Last Updated on August 23, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

With over 1,600 miles of coastline to explore, Lake Michigan can’t be beat for gunkholing, cruising, and sailboat racing. One of the five Great Lakes, this giant body of water is over 300 miles long, has more than 22,000 square miles of surface area, and borders four sates so there’s always somewhere to go and somewhere to rent a boat with a sharing service like Boatsetter. From Indiana to Chicago and Milwaukee to Mackinac, there are dozens of secluded anchorages, state parks, and charming waterfront towns to visit.

Where to Go

Grand Traverse Bay

You could spend years of summers exploring all that Lake Michigan offers but if you have just a few days of boat rental each season, consider checking out some of these destinations.

Grand Traverse Bay is well-protected and generally calm even if Lake Michigan itself is less so. Learn about Ernest Hemmingway who was from the area or explore the town of Charlevoix that is split in two by a canal which leads to Round Pond and Lake Charlevoix. Bring or rent bikes and ride the 26-mile Little Traverse Wheelway for some exercise.

Visit scenic Door County in Wisconsin on the lake’s western shore. The Door County Lighthouse Festival is popular as are July 4 th fireworks in Egg Harbor. And you don’t want to miss the Sturgeon Bay Harvest Festival in late September. Harbor hopping in this area can’t be beat.

Mackinac Island

Beaver Island is the opposite of busy Mackinac. This remote island is 35 miles from Charlevoix on the mainland and tends to be a quiet respite with an unpretentious municipal dock and fun toy museum. The beaches are pristine and you won’t want to miss the Whiskey Point Lighthouse and the Beaver Head Lighthouse for their spectacular views. Check the weather before crossing from the mainland so you don’t get caught in 30-mile winds which are not uncommon here.

Activities & Highlights

Whether you’re in Milwaukee, Chicago, or Door County, there’s much to do during the summer including live music, wine tastings and art festivals. One big draw is the Chicago Air & Water Show that takes place in August and on a boat, you’ll have front row seats to the action. Another can’t miss event is the Playpen boat party which is like a giant tailgate party for boaters that draws in excess of 800 boats in late July.

There are also sailing regattas like the famous “Mac” race that runs from the Chicago Yacht Club to Mackinac Island. This race takes place in July, is over 300 miles long, and over 125 years old. Join the sailboat send off in Chicago or welcome them at the finish line at the island and partake of all the activities and celebrations on both sides of this classic event.

Lake Michigan is long and it can build up seriously large waves when a northerly wind runs along its entire length. Always check the weather before departing, especially if you’ll be boating farther south around Chicago where the weather and sea state can get gnarly. Freshwater forms steeper waves than saltwater because it’s less dense and running into a wall of square waves is no fun.

It can also get very cold in winter with temps below freezing in January near the Windy City. Target to rent a boat in the area from May to October but be ready to change course or cruising plans, especially in spring and fall when the weather may be iffy. Dress appropriately, bring lots of layers, pack flashlights in case you’re caught out after dark, and don’t forget some extra food and water.

Rules & Regulations

There are a few things to know before you untie the dock lines. Like in most other states, the Coast Guard requires all children under 13 to wear a lifejacket when aboard a vessel under way, and there must be a sufficient number of PFDs for the rest of the people aboard as well. You as the operator, cannot bring the boat within 150 feet of a person in the water for safety reasons – unless you’re participating in watersports.

Also, Lake Michigan is located in its entirety within the United States which means there are no check-in requirements for Canadian immigration or customs. You’ll have a bureaucracy-free run of the whole lake.

Serious Boating

Just because it’s called a lake doesn’t mean you should take it less seriously than coastal boating on the ocean. The Great Lakes are massive bodies of water and Lake Michigan can be nearly 200 miles across so it will take some time to traverse. Be boating savvy and prepared. All this said, there are great anchorages, wonderful beaches, and much to do on its shores so book a boat and have fun all summer long

The Great Lakes: A boat-watcher's playground

They're called boatnerds, people who relish the commercial ships that navigate the Great Lakes, delivering iron ore, coal and other aggregates from one port, or one lake, to another.

All of us have a little bit of boatnerd in us. The site of a floating, steel-hulled monster nudging its way up the Cuyahoga River is especially captivating.

Now that the ice (what little we had this year) has melted away and the shipping season has begun with the opening of the Soo Locks between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, we offer up a colorful look at several of the boats that call the Great Lakes home.

These lakers are long, multi-hold vessels with storied histories. Many were designed to bring taconite (iron ore) pellets from the iron ranges of Michigan and Minnesota to the steel mills that dot the lakes, including those at the southern tip of Lake Michigan and the North Coast of Northeast Ohio.

Most of the following information used to describe the boats comes from boatnerd.com, a website for those who relish the commercial ships that navigate the inland seas of the United States. Authors of the information on boatnerd.com are noted when applicable.

Interlake Steamship

Herbert C. Jackson

The Herbert C. Jackson is 690 feet long and was the last steamer in the Interlake Steamship fleet to be converted to diesel power in 2016.

It began service in 1959 and was named for Herbert Cooper Jackson, then managing partner of Pickands Mather, which owned Interlake Steamship. It was the penultimate boat built by the Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge, Mich.

It's the shortest laker in the fleet and has occasionally been called on for other duties. In 1970, it helped deliver 50 Christmas trees to the White House, transporting them from a port on Lake Superior to Cleveland.

And in 1986, it rescued two boaters who had been adrift in Lake Michigan for 80 hours.

James L. Oberstar

The 806-foot Hon. James L. Oberstar is an Interlake Steamship vessel named for a former Congressman from Minnesota. It also was the first U.S. flagship to be fitted with exhaust gas scrubbers.

The ship was built by American Ship Building Co. in Toledo for the Shenango Furnace Co. of Pittsburgh and was christened the Shenango II in Cleveland in 1959, according to George Wharton at boatnerd.com. It was sold to Interlake in 1967 and renamed the Charles M. Beeghly, for the then-chairman and CEO of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp.

The ship was converted to a self-unloading vessel in 1981 and in 2007 it was renamed for Oberstar, considered a great friend to the Great Lakes shipping industry.

Paul R. Tregurtha

This monster is the longest ship on the Great Lakes, according to George Wharton on boatnerd.com. The Paul R. Tregurtha, also known as "Queen of the Lakes" can carry 68,000 gross tons.

The Tregurtha is so long it was built in two places. The bow and part of the cargo hold were put together by American Ship Building Co. in Toledo and the stern was fashioned in Lorain. The vessel was christened in 1981 and originally named the William J. De Lancey after the then-chairman of Interlake customer Republic Steel.

The relatively new ship came with elevators and finely appointed decor for crew and passengers. It was nicknamed the "Fancy De Lancey," according to Wharton.

The ship was the last Great Lakes vessel built in Lorain and was renamed in 1990 for then-Interlake vice chairman Paul R. Tregurtha in 1990, who was also chairman of the firm's parent company.

H. Lee White, movie star

The H. Lee White, owned by American Steamship, made its maiden voyage in 1974 and over the years has been a favorite of boat-watchers, according to George Wharton on boatnerd.com.

Two things are noteworthy about the ship. It has had a few accidents, including taking out a section of the toll bridge at Grosse Ile, Mich. It's also in the movies.

During the open credits of the movie Major League, you can see the H. Lee White on the Cuyahoga River, according to "The Third Coast: Sailors, Strippers, Fishermen, folksingers, Long-haired Ojibway Painters and God-Save-the-Queen Monarchists of the Great Lakes," by Ted McClelland.

Mesabi Miner

The Mesabi Miner is one of the 13 super carriers of 1,000 feet or more that sail the Great Lakes, according to George Wharton on boatnerd.com. It's maiden voyage in 1977 was from Lorain, to Superior, Wisconsin, to pick up a load of iron ore. It still hauls iron ore and coal for Interlake Steamship.

The ship was christened the Mesabi Miner in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1977 by Muriel Humphrey, wife of Hubert H. Humphrey, former senator from Minnesota and vice president of the United States.

The Cort was named after a former vice president of Bethlehem Steel. Its first trip was in 1972, according to Jody L. Aho on boatnerd.com.

Construction on the Cort began in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and was completed in Erie, Pennsylvania, after being brought into Lake Erie through the Welland Canal, according Aho.

The boat is distinctive because of all the super-long ore boats on the lake, it's the only one with the pilot house at the front of the ship.

biggest yacht on lake michigan

Dorothy Ann-Pathfinder

The Dorothy Ann-Pathfinder is well known to Clevelanders as it is short enough to navigate the narrow and winding Cuyahoga River. The Dorothy Ann is a tug and the the Pathfinder is a barge.

The Pathfinder went into service in 1953 as the J.L. Mauthe, according to Jody L. Aho on boatnerd.com. It hauled ore and then mostly grain until it became outdated. Instead of mothballing the ship, it was converted into a barge and connected to the tug Dorothy Ann to become a useful vessel.

biggest yacht on lake michigan

Defiance-Ashtabula

The tug Defiance and barge Ashtabula operate as one ship. They began their career shuttling phosphate and coal between Tampa Bay, Florida, and the lower Mississippi River for Beker Industries of Greenwich, Connecticut At that time they were known as the barge Mary Turner and tug Beverly Anderson, according to Tom Hynes on boatnerd.com.

Rand Logistics Inc. bought the barge and tug in 2011 and brought them back to the Great Lakes in 2012 where they began hauling sand.

Arthur M. Anderson

The Arthur M. Anderson will be forever linked to one of the great maritime tragedies in U.S. history. The Anderson was the last vessel to have contact with the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald on Nov. 10, 1975, shortly before it sank to the bottom of stormy Lake Superior, according to George Wharton on boatnerd.com.

It was built for the Pittsburgh Steamship Division of U.S. Steel Corp. and commissioned in 1952. Three other identical boats, the Philip R. Clarke, John G. Munson and since-scrapped William Clay Ford, were commissioned about the same time.

In 1981, the Anderson was converted into a self-unloading vessel.

biggest yacht on lake michigan

Cason J. Callaway

When the Calloway first sailed in 1952, it was believed to be the largest vessel capable of turning around in the Conneaut harbor, according to Jody L. Aho on boatnerd.com. Conneaut was a major unloading port for iron ore destined for U.S. Steel.

The Calloway was built in River Rouge, Michigan, at the Great Lakes Engineering Works. Like many of the ships on the Great Lakes, it has had its share of collisions with other boats. When the Calloway struck the B.F. Jones in the St. Mary's River in 1955, the Jones was a total loss.

The ship was named for a Georgian textile magnate who founded Callaway Gardens and was a member of the U.S. Steel board of directors.

biggest yacht on lake michigan

Edgar B. Speer

The Edgar B. Speer is a unique ship in that its unloading system can only handle iron ore pellets and only at the ports of Gary, Indiana, and Conneaut, according to George Wharton on boatnerd.com.

The ship was built in two sections, one in Toledo and the other in Lorain, by the American Ship Building. It was commissioned in 1980 and named for a former head of U.S. Steel.

The Great Republic, formerly known as the American Republic, was built to navigate the narrow and winding Cuyahoga River. It's pilot house was placed at the extreme back end of the boat to give its officers the best view of the twisting river, according to Todd Davidson on boatnerd.com.

The ship was used to deliver the Olympic flame Detroit to Cleveland in 1996.

biggest yacht on lake michigan

Roger Blough

The Roger Blough is another biggie. It was launched in 1972 after a delay of nearly a year caused by an engine fired that resulted in the death of four workers who asphyxiated.

The ship is named for a former U.S. Steel chairman. It was built with more flexibility to withstand rough going, as George Wharton explains in boatnerd.com.

"The hull of the Roger Blough was built so that it actually undulates as the vessel works in heavy seas," according to Wharton. "This hull will heave and bend thus arching her back as she negotiates the waves. This form of construction contrasts with older, smaller vessels whose rigid hulls were constructed with two arch supports stretching nearly the full length of the vessel resulting in a 'springing' action while working heavy seas."

Check Out the $85M Yacht Sailing Around Michigan

What do you do when you have a net worth of $500 million and love your dog? Well, you name your $85M luxury yacht after her.

Palm Beach philanthropist and corporate trustee James Berwind, along with his partner Kevin Clark, usually spend their summers in New England living on their mega yacht. Named Scout after their dog, it has been spotted in the waters around Mackinac Island this summer. Pictures and videos have been posted on social media showing the floating masterpiece making its way around the island. It has even been spotted near Port Huron.

The incredible 209-ft yacht  Scout was custom built for the couple back in 2019 and is making quite a splash as it makes it's way around the Great Lakes. The standout yacht, that can accommodates up to 10 guests and has five staterooms, is truly a dream that became reality.

It All Started with an Idea

Believe it or not, Scout was born out of a sketch on a napkin.

“We started with a sketch on a napkin before interviewing any designers,” said Berwind and Clark . “Our wish list was to have a capable, comfortable explorer to travel the world, and we got a long-range ice-classed yacht with ample crew and guest areas, advanced systems for fuel efficiency, telecommunications and responsible waste management.”

What it lead to was a floating piece or architecture and design that features a main saloon that includes an LCD ceiling that mirrors the outside scenes, an intimate C-shaped fire pit that’s ideal for gathering, and nautically inspired staterooms. The private owner’s apartment, that is accessed by a library studded with nautical-themed artifacts, comes complete with an observation lounge and a hidden bar area. There is also a sundeck with a Jacuzzi and a swim-up bar at the back of the ship.

So keep your eyes peeled for a little, or should we say big, piece of luxury cruising about in northern Michigan this summer.

Take a look at what $85M looks like below.

Discover The Beauty: Michigan Great Lake Most Beautiful In U.S.

Scientists just discovered cold, dark sinkholes in Lake Michigan. What's living in them?

Portrait of Caitlin Looby

One of the most amazing discoveries about the Great Lakes is that there are so many discoveries to be made.

The latest: sinkholes at the bottom of Lake Michigan.

On Aug. 21, a team of scientists confirmed there are more than 40 sinkholes on the lakebed in the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary .

This isn’t the first time sinkholes have been found in the Great Lakes. In 2001, scientists found sinkholes at the bottom of Lake Huron in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary .

Lake Huron’s sinkholes have attracted the attention of scientists ever since, especially once they found dancing bacteria in them.

You read that right. It's kind of like a tango.

So, how did scientists find the Lake Michigan sinkholes? How big are they? And do they know what’s hiding in them?

We answer 10 questions.

More: We know more about the surface of Mars than about the floor of Lake Michigan. But what we do know is remarkable.

When were Lake Michigan’s sinkholes discovered?

In 2022, researchers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were out surveying the lakebed in the Wisconsin's marine sanctuary when circular depressions showed up on sonar scans.

The depressions stretched for miles, piquing everyone’s curiosity, said Russ Green, superintendent with the marine sanctuary. A shipwreck hunter who was out looking for a wreck also noted them at about the same time, Green said.

The first time scientists were able to take a closer look was on Aug. 21. Using a remotely operated vehicle, they confirmed they are in fact sinkholes.

They were “perfect, little circles,” said Steve Ruberg, a scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory.

More: Wisconsin’s national marine sanctuary is a museum beneath the water. Here’s what to know.

Where are the sinkholes?

The sinkholes are about 14 miles southeast of Sheboygan, roughly 450 feet below the surface. They extend south in a line towards Port Washington.

How big are they?

The sinkholes range in size from 300 to 600 feet across.

The scientists found roughly 40, although Ruberg said there are likely more.

How do sinkholes in the Great Lakes form?

Whether it’s on land or on the lake bottom, sinkholes form when water dissolves rock, causing the surface layer to collapse and form a hole.

Lake Michigan sits on a layer of limestone bedrock. Over time, groundwater flowing under the lake erodes the bedrock, forming caverns, Ruberg said. Eventually, parts of the ceilings collapsed, forming sinkholes.

Does anything live in the sinkholes?

Not many organisms can withstand the cold, dark and oxygen-deprived conditions.

However, the temperature holds at a fairly constant 38 degrees Fahrenheit at the bottom, Ruberg said, and there are a few critters that “doing their thing in the dark down there." There are freshwater shrimp, known as opossum shrimp as well as deepwater sculpin, which is a small fish. And of course, invasive quagga mussels survive.

Scientists expect there are also bacteria that can handle extreme environments, but they have yet to explore what kinds.

Can the sinkholes cause problems in the lake?

It’s not yet clear how the sinkholes contribute to the lake’s ecosystem, chemistry and water levels.

In Lake Huron, the groundwater that flows through the sinkholes have high levels of salt and sulfur, Ruberg said.

It’s possible that the groundwater seeping in through the sinkholes will contribute to lake levels in a “very small way, but it's part of the whole equation we use to see where the lake levels are potentially going to go,” Ruberg said.

So far, the scientists haven’t found groundwater coming out of the sinkholes that they were able to explore, but they will likely find some when they get out deeper, Ruberg said.

There are dancing bacteria in Lake Huron’s sinkholes?

There sure are. But scientifically, it's referred to as microbial migration.

At the bottom of Lake Huron’s Middle Island sinkhole, there are mats of purple-colored cyanobacteria that produce oxygen from sunlight. There are also white-colored bacteria that eat sulfur to get energy. The bacteria are a kind of carpet on the lake floor.

Scientists discovered that the bacteria flip-flop twice a day to compete with each other. In the early evening hours, the white bacteria rise, blocking the purple cyanobacteria's access to sunlight. When the sun comes out, they switch positions; the white sulfur-eaters move below and the purple cyanobacteria can start producing oxygen again.

The two bacteria do that “tango” every day, completely changing the color of the mat, said Greg Dick, a professor at the University of Michigan and director of the Cooperative Institute of Great Lakes Research.

It's not uncommon to see animals migrate on a daily basis, Dick said, but it's not often seen with microbes.

When it comes to the sinkholes in Lake Michigan, scientists have just begun to explore them. So it's unclear whether bacteria do a daily dance − or other unheard of things.

What will scientists explore next?

Ruberg believes the sinkholes in Lake Michigan are probably similar to the ones in Lake Huron, but scientists won’t know for sure until they investigate further — one of their many next steps. Another avenue of exploration will be to see how much salt and sulfur is seeping into Lake Michigan, he said.

But Ruberg said there is a chance they will find something that’s never been seen in the Great Lakes before.

What can we learn from Great Lakes sinkholes?

The sinkholes are valuable natural laboratories.

“It’s an extreme environment,” Dick said. “We typically have to go to Antarctica or Yellowstone National Park or some exotic location to get these extreme ecosystems, but this is in our backyard in the Great Lakes.”

The dark, low-oxygen and sulfur-rich conditions in the deep sinkholes are similar to early conditions on Earth, Dick said. They can help scientists learn more about Earth’s early history before there was oxygen.

More: Want to explore a Lake Michigan shipwreck? Wisconsin's marine sanctuary just made it easier.

Haven’t the bottom of the Great Lakes been explored?

Not really.

In fact, only 15% of the bottom of the Great Lakes has been mapped in high resolution. Scientists have said they know more about the surface of Mars than they do about the bottom of the largest fresh surface water system on earth.

But that may soon change.

The Lakebed 2030 Initiative by the Great Lakes Observing System, or GLOS, is an effort by scientists, agencies and other organizations to map and fully explore the lake bottoms.

And two Michigan representatives proposed a bipartisan bill earlier this year that would authorize $200 million to map the bottoms of all five lakes. The lakes could be mapped within eight years with proper funding, according to a 2021 report by the observing system.

Until then, there will likely be many more discoveries.

Staggering $68 Million Lake Minnetonka Mansion Aims To Shatter Minnesota’s House Price Record

Minnesota boasts plenty of phenomenal and luxurious homes, but the state is not traditionally associated with glamorous and imposing lakefront mansions that go for tens of millions of dollars.

But one magnificent property looks set to change Minnesota’s real estate image once and for all—going up against the expansive lakehouses that are more commonly found on Lake Tahoe or Lake Michigan .

Priced at an incredible $68 million, the brand-new estate on Lake Minnetonka is quietly being shopped around to potential buyers with the aim of becoming the state’s most expensive home.

And should it sell for anywhere near the asking price, it will have no trouble in smashing that record, according to Isaac Kuehn , a real estate adviser with Minneapolis-based DRG.

At the time of writing, Kuehn says that the most expensive home to ever be sold in Minnesota went for $17.5 million in September 2006—more than $50 million less than this megamansion has been priced at.

$68 Million Mansion in Minnesota

The famous Pillsbury Mansion, also on Lake Minnetonka, was listed for $24 million in 2011. It was razed and the property was divided into five individual sites before it was finally sold .

Interestingly enough, the state’s most lucrative listings have all been located on lush Lake Minnetonka, located just west of Minneapolis. But it’s safe to say that nothing like this new, 8-acre estate with 655 feet of waterfront has ever been constructed on its tony shores.

The compound features 29,000 square feet of living space, including eight bedrooms and 17 bathrooms, the listing states. It took two years to design and five years to build.

The architecture appears to be an elegant melange of several design approaches, including Tudor, chateau, contemporary, and even Prairie-style, and together they somehow seem organic.

Natural materials, including stone and wood, are used extensively. High, coffered ceilings abound, and multipaned windows can be found throughout, framing the home’s spectacular views.

It seems that no expense was spared in the construction of this magnificent home.

For example, $750,000 worth of Italian marble was used in the bathroom of the primary wing’s main suite. That includes a 1,400-pound carved marble tub, as reported by the Wall Street Journal . Luxuries include a spa with a Himalayan salt room and an entertaining area with a home theater, bowling alley, arcade, cigar lounge, and wine cave.

Since lake houses with amenities for large groups of friends and family are a tradition in Minnesota, it’s also reported that this home has a bunk room with 12 beds, an eight-car showcase garage, plus a six-car garage for recreational vehicles.

Did we mention the property is not just a summertime escape, but a year-round elegant compound?

It comes with two 2,000-square-foot guesthouses and a guest boat dock (in addition to the main one for residents).

$68 Million Mansion in Minnesota

For recreation, there’s a pool and pool house, a lakeside porch, and a putting green by a pond.

Plus, with its location right on the lake, all the water sports you can imagine are right at hand, including fishing, sailing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, waterskiing, and tubing in the warmer months, and ice fishing, skating, and snowmobiling in the winter.

Incidentally, the second most expensive home on the market in Minnesota right now is also on Lake Minnetonka—on its own peninsula.

Listed at $14,750,000 , it features 9,016 square feet of living space and has five bedrooms and 6.6 baths.

Father-son team John F. Adams and John C. Adams of Compass share the listing for what is Minnesota’s current priciest listing.

Fireboat Tackles Blaze on Lake Near Detroit Amid Weather Warning

Posted: August 28, 2024 | Last updated: August 28, 2024

Emergency officials extinguished a boat fire on Lake Saint Clair, near Detroit, Michigan, on Tuesday, August 27, as the National Weather Service (NWS) warned boaters to “seek safe harbor.” The Macomb County Sheriff Marine Division told Storyful that the boat was towed back to shore after the flames were extinguished, and no injuries were reported. As of Wednesday afternoon, the cause of the fire was still under investigation. Footage captured by Kristine Pawelski shows the boat engulfed in flames, as emergency responders race out amid a wind warning and what the NWS called “steep waves.” Credit: Kristine Pawelski via Storyful
