Galapagos Travel

We hope you consider our Galapagos catamarans the best option for your voyage. We help travelers make the most of their time on the Galapagos Islands whilst respecting the environment of this fragile ecosystem.

Advantages of Catamarans

There are several advantages of cruising on board a Galapagos catamaran, to mention just a few of the benefits:

  • Smoother Ride: Almost any Multihull will offer you a smoother ride in rough water due to the dual hull design and the construction's parachute effect as the boat crosscuts the waves. Air trapped between the hulls cushions the impact of re-entry.
  • Stability: Load levels on a Galapagos catamaran can be up to 20% greater than a similar sized monohull. Catamarans are more stable. The footprint is wider, helping to negate the effects of rolling seas.
  • More deck space: A Galapagos catamaran is wider than a monohaul yacht offering additional deck space and sun bathing areas.
  • Environment friendly: All Galapagos catamarans have less hull resistance in the water, resulting in greater fuel efficiency.
  • Access to remote areas of the Galapagos Islands: The catamaran's shallow draft design allows access to waterways that most conventional hulls cannot navigate.

Guests of all ages enjoy the spacious, semi-covered sky deck, the al fresco dining area, and the cozy bar-salon while aboard the Elite, and its interior passenger lounge features a 180-degree panoramic view from its main deck.

With 9 beautifully designed cabins, personalized onboard service, and fantastic indoor and outdoor social areas, your expectations of cruise comfort and relaxation will surely be surpassed. Certified guides will introduce you to the most breathtaking Galapagos sites with thrilling complete itineraries combining hiking, snorkeling, and kayaking.

The Jewel Of Galapagos

Unique and exclusive design features can be found in every detail of the 16-passenger Alya catamaran, throughout the cabins and social areas. The boat’s molten glass decorations are inspired by the natural harmony and colors of the sky, sea, and earth that you will see as you cruise the enchanting waters of the Galapagos archipelago.

In the dining room area, the most delicious menu of local and international dishes is cooked by professional chefs. There are plenty of opportunities for post-dinner relaxation as well, in the jacuzzi, lounge, or just enjoying a drink from one of the catamaran’s two bars.

All of the nine spacious yet cozy en-suite cabins have ocean views, eight of which also boast stunning private balconies, so you can feel in the midst of nature at every point of your navigation, and may even spot dolphins and manta rays playing in the water from the comfort of your room. The other cabin, despite not having a balcony, is comfortably one of the best options for solo travelers in the islands, being equally spacious with a large matrimonial bed, and yet no single supplement is applicable.

Explore The Islands

The Alya’s eight crew members and bilingual, certified naturalist guide will make your journey through the Galapagos Islands a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Their expert knowledge of the islands, waters, flora, and fauna that makes the Galapagos National Park such a singular destination is unparalleled. The guides will introduce you to many endemic species of plants and animals as you take part in authorized hikes through these protected lands.

No trip to these islands is complete without joining the wildlife in the water and getting a close view of the turtles, fish, sea lions, and dolphins in their natural habitat. The boat is equipped with high-quality snorkeling equipment and wetsuits as well as kayaks, dinghies, and paddle-boards, so you can tour the crystal clear sea any way you choose.

Home Away From Home

Sharing this adventure with just 16 guests onboard the Alya catamaran will make for an enriching and enjoyable voyage that you will never forget. The luxurious and comfortable social areas on the boat are the perfect place to share your experiences with your fellow travelers and make new friends. After the day’s excursions, you can settle in for a movie night in the lounge, sign in to the all-new Mydas App, which offers onboard entertainment such as movies, digital books, and educational material, or swap stories over a delicious meal and a signature cocktail.

As well as your time spent exploring the islands, kayaking through the clear waters, and birdwatching from Alya’s sundeck, the friendly crew and experienced cruise director aim to make your trip even more enjoyable with cooking classes, theme nights, and personalized service to make you feel completely at home.

5 Day - Northern & Central Islands

itinerary map

Embarkation

AM : Today you will arrive to begin your experience at Baltra Airport. Here you will be received and transferred to the cruise port. A small ride will follow as we welcome you onboard the Alya Catamaran.

PM : Your very first lunch will be served on board. After lunch, our first visit is to Black Turtle Cove which is situated in the northern region of Santa Cruz. This bay is surrounded by mangroves and is accessible by dinghy only. The shallow cove is a safe refuge for marine life. Black-tip reef sharks, marine turtles, and a variety of rays are often spotted here. We then return to the Alya for dinner.

Alya's 5-Day Itinerary Day One - Embarkation.

Darwin Bay & Prince Phillip’s Steps

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion. Our visit to Darwin Bay includes short walks, photography, swimming, snorkeling. Genovesa is a small island in the north of the Galapagos. Our unloading in Darwin Bay will be wet. Near the beach is a mangrove swamp where we will find: a colony of frigates, marine iguanas, red-footed boobies and mask boobies, the great terrestrial finch, seagulls, herons, and cactus finch. Following the land visit, our passengers can enjoy a swim in the bay. Snacks and refreshments are available. Afterward, we will enjoy lunch on board.

PM : Here, we will go for a walk on the Barranco path, also known as Prince Phillip’s Steps. On our journey, we will observe tropical birds, petrels, common frigate, red-foot boobies, mask boobies, doves, and finches. Dinner will be served back on board.

Alya's 5-Day Itinerary Day Two - Finch Sighting.

Sullivan Bay & Bartolome Island

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion at Sullivan Bay. Virtually uneroded lava flows cover an extensive area of this island. Lava pahoehoe (basaltic lava that has a smooth, billowy, undulating, or ropy surface), hornitos, and mollugo can be seen. Snacks and refreshing beverages await you onboard the ship. Lunch will be served on board.

PM : This afternoon we visit Bartolome Island. Activities on this island include walking, swimming, snorkeling, and photography. We will follow a path to the top (114m) where we can see pioneering plants. The island has been formed by cones, lava pipes where lava once flowed. Following the wet landing at the beach, we will follow a path through mangrove swamps and sand dune vegetation, to the south beach. At the north beach, guests can enjoy swimming and snorkeling. From the top of Bartolome, we will be able to see the islands of Santiago, Rabida, and Isabela. We will see penguins in the Rock Pinnacle. Dinner will be served on board.

Alya's 5-Day Itinerary Day Three - Galapagos Beach.

Dragon Hill, Chinese Hat Islet & Mosquera Islet

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion at Chinese Hat, a small islet located near the south-east coast of Santiago. It’s shaped like a Chinese hat when seen from afar. On the west side, you can see pillow-type lava formations, which are an indicator that the flows were formed under the sea and have been raised upward. This visit provides an excellent opportunity for the interpretation of geological features such as lava tubes and lava flows. The trail is 700 m (round trip) and the minimum time it takes for this trek is 30 minutes. Afterward, we return to the Alya and enjoy lunch.

PM : Mosquera Islet is located between Baltra Island and North Seymour. Here, we find the biggest sea lion colony; it is also possible to observe several species of birds. Enjoy the white sand beach. Return to the Alya for dinner.

Alya's 5-Day Itinerary Day Four - Sea Lion Sighting.

Disembarkation

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion. After breakfast, we will visit Charles Darwin Station, located in the main port on Santa Cruz Island. We take a private bus to the entrance of the breeding center where we will see tortoises and land iguanas in captivity. This center is the main breeding site on the islands. Thanks to the dedicated work of several institutions, some species are being saved. Here lived Lonesome George, the famous last survivor of the giant tortoise species found on Pinta Island.

After your morning excursion, you will disembark from the Alya, and be transferred to Santa Cruz airport to catch your flight home.

Alya's 5-Day Itinerary Day Five - Disembarkation.

6 Day - Western Islands

itinerary map

PM : Your very first lunch will be served on board. After lunch, we will visit the Highlands of Santa Cruz, where we will hike and encounter giant tortoises in their natural habitat, truly a natural wonder. For this visit, we recommend using sport shoes, long pants, a raincoat, a hat, and sun block. Afterward, we return to the Alya for dinner and your first evening on board.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary A Day One - Embarkation.

Moreno Point & Elizabeth Bay

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion at Moreno Point, located on the north coast of Isabela Island between Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul Volcanoes. The main attractions at Punta Moreno are coastal lagoons amid black lava flows where there are several species of birds. It has a panoramic view of the three most active volcanoes in the Galapagos: The Sierra Negra, Isabela Island, and Fernandina Island.

PM:  Elizabeth Bay is one of the island’s best breeding sites for penguins. Located on the west coast of Isabela, Elizabeth Point is a marine visitor site. Brown pelicans, flightless cormorants, spotted eagle rays, golden rays, and sea lions are often seen at Red Mangrove Cove. Dinner will be served on board afterward.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary A Day Two - Volcano Sighting.

Urbina Bay & Espinoza Point

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion at Urbina Bay. This place is located at the base of Alcedo Volcano between Elizabeth Bay and Tagus Cove. The trail length is around 3.2 km; during this, we can observe land iguanas, hawks, and tortoises. It is also possible to see red and blue lobsters.

PM:  Fernandina is the third biggest island in the Galapagos and has only one visiting site - Espinoza Point. Famous for the large colonies of marine iguanas and the home of the flightless cormorant, the Galapagos penguin, snakes, and more. Fernandina is the only island that doesn’t have mammals, and the open areas are extremely fragile. We take great care when walking (from January - June), the nesting period of the marine iguana. Dinner will be served back on board.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary A Day Three - Marine Iguana Sighting.

Tagus Cove & Vicente Roca Point

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion. Tagus   Cove is located to the west of Darwin Volcano on Isabela Island. While walking, we will find several inscriptions dating back to the 1800s. From here, we can see Darwin Lake, a saltwater lake containing no fish. It is very common to see a variety of bird species here.

PM:  Vicente Roca Point is comprised of two separate coves. This site is a large bay with spectacular sea life. Keep an eye out for seahorses, sea turtles, and the strange yet fascinating sunfish. Dinner served back on board.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary A Day Four - Red-Footed Booby.

Espumilla Beach & Egas Port

AM : We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion at Espumilla Beach. The main attractions include Palo Santo Wood, the beach, and the stunning landscape. The beach is a very important site for tortoises because they use this place for nesting. We will return on board for lunch.

PM : At Egas Port, we find a beautiful black sand beach. To the south of the beach is the Pan de Azucar Volcano, whose volcanic deposits have contributed to the formation of the black sand beach. The crater of this volcano contains a saltwater lake that dries up during hot weather.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary A Day Five - Beach Excursion.

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our final excursion. The beautiful Bachas beach is located in the north of Santa Cruz Island. The site was named during WWII when the American army left two barges on the beach. The early colonists couldn’t pronounce barges correctly, so they called the area “Bachas”.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary A Day Six - Disembarkation.

6 Day - Southern Islands

itinerary map

PM : Today you will arrive to begin your experience at Baltra Airport. Here you will be received and transferred to the cruise port. A small ride will follow as we welcome you onboard the Alya Catamaran.

Your first excursion will be at Seymour, which was formed by the lifting of volcanic marine lava. In 1932, Captain Alan Hancock and his crew took 72 malnourished land iguanas from Baltra Island to North Seymour Island so that the iguanas could live in better conditions. In 1934, colonists verified that the iguanas were in good condition. The vegetation of North Seymour is bushy and is host to nesting real frigates of the Galapagos. Afterward, we return to the Alya for your first dinner on board.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary B Day One - Embarkation.

South Plaza & Santa Fe

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion. South Plazas are two small islands, created by an uplifting of the land. The land iguanas are smaller here; they nest during the warm season. The hike goes along an extraordinary cliff where sea birds nest. There are over 1000 sea lions located on the south side of the Plazas. Return to the Alya for lunch on board.

PM:  Santa Fe will include hiking, swimming, and snorkeling. This central island is a unique place to visit. It has an incredible bay of turquoise water, protected by a natural barrier of rocks. You will see colonies of seals as hawks fly overhead. This island is home to one of the two species of land iguanas found in the Galapagos. Their main food source is the leaves and fruit of the large, thick cactus found here.   The bay is an excellent place to swim and snorkel. Marine tortoises, rays, sea lions, and tropical fish are an amazing attraction! Snacks and refreshing beverages are waiting for you on board. Dinner will be served afterward.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary B Day Two - Giant Tortoises.

Interpretation Center & Lobos Island

AM:  After breakfast, our first visit is to the Interpretation Center of San Cristobal. This architectural space was designed for the natural interpretation of the Galapagos. You will learn about the volcanic formation of the islands, the evolution of the species, the history of human settlement, and complex systems and management models. Return to the Alya for lunch.

PM: Our visit to Lobos Island includes panga riding, swimming, and snorkeling. Here, we can walk, swim and snorkel among the seals, frigates, marine iguanas, lava lizards, and the small endemic Galapagos snake.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary B Day Three - Frigate Bird Sighting.

Gardner Bay & Suarez Point

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion. We visit Gardner Bay for a short walk, swimming, snorkeling, and observation of the sea lion colony. In Gardner Bay, we are going to find many of them relaxing on the beach enjoying the sun. In addition to observing these fascinating animals, while snorkeling, we will be able to swim with sea lions, sea turtles, a diversity of tropical fish, marine iguanas, etc. Return Alya for lunch.

PM:  This afternoon we visit Suarez Point for walking and sight-seeing. There is no color more amazing and outstanding in this tropical desert island than that of the blue-foot boobies. The albatross, an aristocratic bird weighing up to four kilograms, can also be observed here. It is important to note that albatrosses will not be seen between January and March (non-breeding) season. Our walk will be on lava rock where we will be able to see lava tubes. Red mangroves are found here. Delicious snacks and fresh beverages are waiting for you on the ship. Dinner will be served afterward.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary B Day Four - Walking Excursion.

Cormorant Point, Devil's Crown & Cerro Alieri

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our first excursion. Cormorant Point will be a wet landing, with snorkeling and short trekking. This point is located west of Floreana Island and it is famous for its dark green beach (due to the great number of olivine crystals). You can see many marine invertebrates, as well as sea lions, sea iguanas, frigates, and pelicans.

Activities at Devil’s Crown you can enjoy a panga ride around a small island, a satellite islet of Floreana Island. Here, we will find a group of rocks that resemble a Crown due to the constant erosion caused by the sea. It is one of the better places to snorkel in the interior and around the crown. Excellent visibility allows guests to admire a great variety of fish and sea animals. Return to the Alya for lunch.

PM:  Cerro Alieri is located east of Port Velasco Ibarra. This place may be muddy and it may rain but it will be a wonderful afternoon hike! We return to the Alya for dinner.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary B Day Five - Pelican Sighting

AM:  We begin the day with breakfast before our final excursion. Today we have trekking - we will find giant tortoises in their natural habitat. For this visit, we recommend good walking shoes, long pants, a raincoat, a hat, and sunblock.

Alya's 6-Day Itinerary B Day Six - Disembarkation.

The Top 4 Galapagos Island Tours on Catamarans

Ocean Spray Cruise

Possibly one of the only places on Earth where the description changed from being one of hell by an early shipwrecked member of clergy to paradise as ascribed by nature lovers, the Galapagos Islands are certainly incredible. Given their diversity and area, they represent one of the world’s powerhouses of evolution famously portrayed in biology textbooks worldwide and on the list of everyone who has just the smallest interest in the natural world.

As a place where large lizards dive the ocean to feed from algae, vampire finches drink the blood of other birds and 600lb (300kg) tortoises meander down the mountains, the Galapagos Islands are like a fictional story from Alice and Wonderland rather than a real place. But located 500 miles (900 km) west of Ecuador, you can tour these incredible islands after a short flight from Quito, Ecuador’s capital city, to Baltra or San Cristobal Island on the Galapagos. We recommend visiting the area on the top Galapagos Island tours aboard catamarans, which offer a little more comfort and a more private experience of this incredible location than the larger cruise vessel.

Here we will mention our pick of Galapagos Island catamaran tours that provide environmental responsibility, walking tours of the Galapagos, kayaking, and snorkeling adventures so you can make the most of this truly incredible part of the world. We will go over our selection of cruise vessels and highlight a couple of Galapagos cruise itineraries, but there are more to choose from, including a 15 day mega cruise to cover all the Galapagos has to offer.

First off, let’s introduce the Cormorant Galapagos Cruise and an example itinerary.

The Cormorant Galapagos Catamaran Cruise

The Cormorant Galapagos Cruise is a luxury-class catamaran with jacuzzi, private decks in each of the spacious staterooms, and modern facilities. Aboard the Cormorant Galapagos Cruise you will enjoy comfortable transportation and a base to tour the Galapagos Islands. You have your choice from either four, five, and eight day itineraries or a 15 day mega cruise. The following is a description of the 4 day itinerary, which provides a great opportunity for a short visit to the islands.

Cormorant Cruise Galapagos Island catamaran

4 Day Itinerary on the Cormorant Catamaran Cruise

A great option for a short visit to experience the Galapagos Islands, on the 4 day Cormorant Galapagos Cruise of the Southern Islands you will start on San Cristobal and see its large colony of seabirds. After this, you will travel to Española and Suárez Point, one of the top wildlife spots in the Galapagos. Here you can see blue-footed boobies, albatrosses, waved albatross, red-billed tropicbirds, lava lizards, Galapagos hawks and Nazca boobies, as well as fantastic blowholes that provide great photographs.

Cormorant Galapagos Island catamaran

While at Española, we will head over to Gardner Bay, on the eastern side of the island, to the breeding site of 12,000 pairs of waved albatrosses. This is nearly their entire population. This is also a great place to see sea lions and for diving or snorkeling expeditions. It’s also a good place simply to relax on the white sandy beaches.

Cormorant Galapagos Island catamaran

We will also pay a visit to Osborn Islet to see a busy sea lion colony and an optional swim with the sea lion pups. This particular visit will be marine based and you can enjoy snorkeling and swimming.

Cormorant Galapagos Island catamaran

After Española Island, we will cruise to Floreana and Cormorant Point, which offers a great place to walk a trail overlooking flamingos in a saltwater lagoon. You can also see other birds like common stilts and white-cheeked pintails. This particular island offers some unique features, such as the Green Beach, colored from the sand’s olivine crystals, and the Four Sand Beach formed from white coral.

While on Floreana, we will visit the Champion Islet for snorkelling and diving to see black coral bushes and yellow cup corals. If you look carefully, you should be able to find Pacific seahorses, hawkfish, as well as green turtles, salema and surgeonfish.

Cormorant Galapagos Island catamaran

We will then visit Post Office Bay, which is a white sand beach and a great place to relax, before cruising to Baroness Viewpoint. Here you can enjoy the Galapagos environment and think about the Baroness and an old murder mystery which surrounds her life. As you ponder on this, you can enjoy various easy trails to see the flora and fauna of Floreana. The area provides great views and is also frequented by sea turtles.

Cormorant Galapagos Island catamaran

On the last day, we will visit Santa Cruz and the Charles Darwin Station. Learn about the work the station is doing to help preserve the Galapagos Islands, see giant tortoises and also giant tortoise hatchlings. After this, it’s time for transport back to the airport and your return journey to Quito.

The Ocean Spray Galapagos Islands Catamaran Cruise

Next up, we have the Ocean Spray Luxury-Class Catamaran. This offers the ultimate Galapagos experience with the best performance and comfort of Galapagos Islands cruises. Enjoy the elegant design, very spacious sundeck, jacuzzi and spacious suites with private balcony. In addition to the comfort of a modern luxury-class catamaran, the cruise offers kayaks, snorkeling equipment, quality control managers, and bilingual naturalist guides.

Ocean Spray Galapagos Island catamaran

Aboard the Ocean Spray , you have various itineraries on offer, from four, five, six, eight, and fifteen day cruises. There are also 2 variations of the six and eight day programs to make sure you don’t miss a particular interest. You can fill in the form on the cruise page to receive a detailed itinerary. Here we will mention the 6 day cruise ‘B’ option.

6 Day Ocean Spray Galapagos Islands Catamaran Cruise

The Ocean Spray 6 Day Cruise ‘B’ of the Central and Southern Islands provides high chances of the famous wildlife sightings of the Galapagos, such as the land iguanas, marine iguanas, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and giant tortoises.

Ocean Spray Galapagos Island catamaran

You will be greeted on arrival at Baltra Island airport and will be transported to the boat to begin your cruise. In the afternoon, we visit Santa Fe Island where we often see Galapagos land iguanas. The area is also inhabited by giant tuna. Here you can find two different visitor trails you can walk to spot wildlife, the small beach, a tall prickly pear cactus forest, and enjoy the scenic viewpoint.

Ocean Spray Galapagos Island catamaran

The next day we head to Española Island and Suárez Point, which is a great place for spotting the famous Galapagos blue-footed boobies, albatrosses, lava lizards, and Nazca Boobies. You will also find a large blowhole which provides great photo opportunities.

After this, we visit Gardner Bay and the Osborn Islet, another fantastic part of Española, to enjoy the white sandy beaches with abundant sea lions. This area is also the breeding site of the world’s 12,000 pairs of Waved Albatrosses. It’s also a great place for snorkeling to see many colorful fish and a swim with sea lion pups.

Ocean Spray Galapagos Island catamaran

On day three, we visit San Cristobal and begin at the interpretation center to learn about their conservation work and the island’s giant tortoises. We then visit the southeast part of San Cristobal to see birds like warblers, finches and mockingbirds then head out on the short trail to spot giant tortoises.

The next day we will visit Isla Lobos, which is named after the colony of sea lions resting and playing among these rocks. This is also a great place to spot blue-footed boobies, great frigate-birds, brown pelicans, lava gulls, common noddies, yellow warblers and small and medium ground finches. This island also offers fantastic snorkeling.

Sea Lions on the Ocean Spray Cruise, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

In the afternoon, we head to Leon Dormido, a striking rock formation located a couple hours from San Cristobal. This will be a marine visit for snorkeling to see sharks, tropical fish, turtles, occasional manta rays, hammerhead sharks, spectacular rock formations, and sea birds. The birds here include blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies and frigatebirds.

The following day we visit Pitt Point at the north-eastern tip of the island where we will find hosts frigatebirds, storm petrels, and all three types of booby birds. You have an optional steep walk, which goes up to a cliff and through a ravine to see many birds. This is also a great place for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Ocean Spray Galapagos Island catamaran

Saving a true highlight of the island until last, we visit Witch Hill (Cerro Brujo) surrounded by some of the most attractive beaches on the Galapagos. The area has a high abundance of wildlife, including sea turtles, rays, marine iguanas, and various types of Booby Birds.

On day five we visit Floreana, starting at Post Office Bay. This is where the early whalers placed their mail. You will also have time for a relaxing walk or snorkeling opportunities.

After this, we visit Cormorant Point on Floreana with its Green Beach, colored by the sand’s olivine crystals, and also White Sand Beach formed from white coral. As the name suggests, birdlife here is plentiful, including flamingos at the lagoon, as well as common stilts and white-cheeked pintails

Last of all for Floreana, we visit Devil’s Crown, which offers one of the best snorkeling sites in the Galapagos. The volcanic crater was eroded by the ocean causing the north and south sides to poke out of the water. This has created a great place for the coral in the middle to attract wildlife. Snorkelers will enjoy many different types of marine life, including sharks, rays, rock formations, and lots of tropical fish.

For your final day on the Galapagos, we pay a visit to Black Turtle Cove at the northern part of Santa Cruz. The inlet is only accessible by dinghy and is surrounded by mangroves. The shallow cove is a safe place for young and baby marine life, which means you will often spot hammerhead shark babies, whitetip reef sharks, rays, sea turtles, and sea birds. Then, in the afternoon, you will head back to Quito with some fantastic memories of the Galapagos Islands.

The Best Galápagos Island Cruises

A cruise is one of the best ways to see all that this remote Ecuadorian archipelago has to offer.

catamaran tour galapagos

There's no better way to cover ground on your trip to the Galápagos Islands than to sail on a multiday cruise.

Galápagos National Park regulates the number and type of tourist boats that are allowed to operate in the famously biodiverse area. This helps with overcrowding, conserving the environment, and minimizing stress on the amazing wildlife of the Galápagos. Many tourist boats in the area offer five- to seven-day all-inclusive itineraries that are strictly monitored by the national park officials. There are also cruises operating illegally, so you have to take care when choosing a tour.

To help you find a cruise fit for your wildest dreams, we've rounded up 14 of the best options, whether you prefer a small ship or bigger vessel, an action-packed itinerary or a casual drift around this remote archipelago in the Pacific.

5 Things to do in Galápagos

Small galápagos cruises.

Most of the cruise ships in the Galápagos Islands carry fewer than 20 passengers. These vessels, typically motor yachts, can't provide some of the luxurious amenities available on larger ships, but they do ensure personalized service, a more intimate experience, and quicker trips on and off the boat.

Quasar Grace

The 18-passenger Grace was once owned by Grace Kelly. She and Prince Rainier spent part of their honeymoon on the motor yacht, and now you can sleep in their bedroom, the Grace Kelly Suite, which is one of nine rooms aboard. The ship sails three routes, taking eight to 15 days, and guests get plenty of snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, and panga rides along the way.

Ecoventura Letty

The Letty is one of the best full-service motor yachts in the Galápagos for value. This 20-passenger boat is a solid option with great service and comfortable accommodations. A trip on the Letty promises a 10 guest-per-guide ratio, as well as dinner with the captain. You get a choice between two seven-day itineraries, each including opportunities to snorkel, hike, and learn about the local wildlife from knowledgeable guides.

Ecoventura Origin

The 20-passenger Origin is like a floating boutique hotel. All 10 cabins are on the same deck, there’s an open-bar policy, and Wi-Fi is available on board. A unique hull design means this ship is also one of the most fuel-efficient in the Galápagos. Like the Letty , Ecoventura's Origin sails two routes around the archipelago, each lasting eight days and providing plenty of chances to get up close to nature.

Medium Galápagos Ships

If you're stuck between whether to book your cruise on a small ship or a large vessel — both have their advantages — one of these medium-sized boats accommodating 20 to 50 passengers could be the best of both worlds. You'll enjoy more space, a larger group to mingle with, and sometimes a wider variety of activities and services to accommodate more people.

Quasar Evolution

The 32-passenger Evolution was designed by Adriana Hoyos, a furniture and interior designer renowned for her work on luxury hotels across the Americas. Its cabins have a contemporary boutique-hotel aesthetic. There are indoor and outdoor lounges, a bar, and a library. Passengers can choose between three itineraries, ranging from eight to 15 days and taking different routes around the Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Islander II

All cabins on the 48-passenger National Geographic Islander II have windows, and some even have private patios. The ship offers deck hammocks, Wi-Fi, and food made with ingredients sourced from farms in the Galápagos whenever possible. Itineraries range from seven to 12 days and include cultural experiences in addition to wildlife viewing and water sports.

Large Galápagos Ships

Galápagos National Park officials have set a maximum of 100 passengers per vessel, so these are some of the largest ships in the archipelago. Travelers may opt for a larger-capacity cruise ship for more space (such as bigger hallways and staircases for easier movement around the ship) and increased services like an onboard doctor. The downside of traveling on a large ship is the time it can take to complete transfers by zodiac from the boat to the islands. Also, some areas of the Galápagos may be off limits to larger ships.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Endeavour II

The 96-passenger National Geographic Endeavour II has Wi-Fi, a doctor, SUP gear, a clear-bottom zodiac, a free digital photo kiosk with iMacs, and a spa. Like the Islander II, food brought from the mainland is carefully prepared and packaged to prevent the introduction of invasive species to the Galápagos Islands.

Celebrity Flora

The 100-passenger Celebrity Flora features all of the design elements, amenities, and services of its sibling ships and then some. It has two 1,288-square-foot penthouse suites (the largest in the Galápagos), naturalist-guided stargazing sessions, and outdoor cabanas that you can reserve for a unique glamping experience.

Silversea Silver Origin

The 100-passenger Silver Origin is an all-suite ship with accommodations up to 1,722 square feet, some with in-room espresso machines and mini-bars, private verandas, and butler service. Tips are included in the price. The ship also has a fitness center, a spa, a communal fire pit, and two restaurants. There are more than 100 cruise options, some lasting as long as 18 days.

Galápagos Catamarans

These small boats have a unique hull design, like the dual parallel runners of a sled, that many believe makes catamarans more stable in the water.

Celebrity Xploration

The 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration is arguably the most luxurious catamaran in the Galápagos. Its eight suites and junior suites feature extras like binoculars, personal refrigerators, a pillow menu, and room service. The catamaran cruises two routes, a northern route and a southern route, both lasting seven nights.

Anahi Yacht Catamaran

The Anahi has eight rooms accommodating up to 16 passengers, including two spacious suites. Travelers can expect traditional yacht design details, like polished wooden floors and portrait windows. There are multiple itineraries to choose from, each stopping off at different islands and exploring different parts of the Galápagos. The cruises range in duration from four to 15 days.

Royal Galapagos Cormorant II

The Cormorant II can carry 16 passengers in nine cabins, all with private balconies. Some of the suites even come with walk-in closets and their own Jacuzzi tubs. Travelers can opt for a four- to eight-day cruise with inclusive excursions such as snorkeling, kayaking, and glass-bottom boat tours.

Live-aboard Dive Boats

If you’re a certified scuba diver, a live-aboard dive boat might be for you. These boats are built to accommodate the specific needs (and gear) of divers, and they navigate special routes and itineraries that include top dive sites. The Galápagos is home to whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, spotted eagle rays, manta rays, sunfish, and many other marine creatures.

Explorer Ventures Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer

Explorer Ventures ' two live-aboard vessels, the Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer , accommodate 16 passengers each. The Humboldt has a large dive deck, which makes it easier to get into and out of your dive gear. The eight-day excursion includes up to 19 dives and the 11-day excursion includes up to 28.

Galápagos Nortada

The 84-foot Nortada has only four cabins and can sleep eight guests. Passengers can congregate on the bridge, the galley, or in the dining room and lounge. Dive trips last either seven or 14 nights, and itineraries include up to four dives a day.

Galápagos Aggressor III

The Aggressor ships have been cruising around the Galápagos Islands since 1993. The Galápagos Aggressor III accommodates 16 passengers. Charters last a week and include four dives a day plus two land excursions.

What to Bring on a Playa del Carmen Catamaran Tour

Here are some of the Mexico travel essentials I would recommend bringing on a catamaran tour:

  • Swimsuit: You will more than likely be getting in the water so you’ll want to wear a swimsuit and coverup.
  • Sunglasses : Don’t forget sunglasses to wear on the catamaran–it will likely be very bright and sunny!
  • Beach towel: Bring a beach towel to dry off after you get out of the water. These microfiber beach towels are great options because they are super light weight and dry quickly between the multiple stops.
  • Biodegradable sunscreen: Any time you are going to be swimming in the ocean, it is so important to bring biodegradable sunscreen to protect and preserve the coral reefs. You can pick up my favorite brand on Amazon here .
  • Snorkel set: If you’re concerned about comfort or cleanliness, I would recommend bringing your own snorkel set instead of using the one provided on the tour. I’ve been on snorkeling tours where my snorkel mask didn’t fit well and it totally ruined the experience so now I always bring my own.
  • GoPro or waterproof camera: I would highly recommend bringing a GoPro or waterproof camera to capture your snorkeling and catamaran experience. I always bring my GoPro and am constantly amazed by the picture quality.
  • Change of clothes: You’ll also want to bring a change of clothes so you can change out of your wet swimsuit before the ride back to your hotel or resort.

  • Bring your own snorkel set: If you plan to snorkel, I would recommend bringing your own snorkel set to ensure the best comfort and cleanliness.
  • Wear biodegradable sunscreen: As I mentioned, don’t forget to bring biodegradable sunscreen . It’s absolutely essential if you need sun protection.

My top pick for the best catamaran trip in Riviera Maya is this Isla Mujeres Luxury Catamaran & Snorkel with Lunch and Open Bar . It has over 1,800 positive reviews and includes hotel pickup!

And if you want to ditch the crowds, then definitely consider booking a private catamaran charter to have your own private crew and for the freedom to customize your entire experience including the itinerary, food, drinks, and music.

No matter which experience you choose, a catamaran sail from Playa del Carmen is is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t want to miss!

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited on most snorkeling tours, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Hi, Sebastian, we’ve just come home from our trip and want to thank you for putting together such a great itinerary. Everything went smoothly and both Horizon cruise and La Selva were top notch. We had a fantastic time in Ecuador and really appreciate your expertise and guidance. We will definitely refer you to our families and friends when they also want to visit Galapagos and/or Amazon. Thank you very much! Cha Park March 2024 4.9
Hola Diana, we are finally finished with all of our tours here in Ecuador that we arranged through your company and I wanted to drop you this note to say thank you very much for the fantastic service. All of our tours were first rate, and the guides were excellent. Also, the logistics were perfect, everybody was right on time to meet us right where we expected them to be. We can’t thank you enough for making our trip so special. The sites we saw, especially in the Galapagos and around a Otavalo we’re ones we will never forget. Thank you again and we will definitely recommend your agency to all our friends and family! Jim Wagner June 2023 4.9
