Excellence-superyacht

Step on board the 80m Abeking & Rasmussen superyacht Excellence

An owner thought his 60-metre yacht couldn’t be bettered – until he saw an 80-metre model at the 2015 Fort Lauderdale show. Four years later, that owner took delivery of his Excellence, as Sam Fortescue discovers .

What do you do when you think you’ve built the perfect 60-metre yacht? Well, naturally, you start again with something even bigger. Or at least that’s what the American owner of the Excellence series of six yachts chose to do. “The 60-metre yacht that I had, Excellence V , was in my opinion the most beautiful, high volume, best performing yacht of her size that I was aware of,” he tells me. “To build another 60-metre that was better, I believed was impossible. I decided to move up to 80 metres and a more contemporary design. At one of the yacht shows I saw a rendering of a design that was to be a Winch/Abeking joint venture. I fell in love.”

This begins the rapid-fire story of the sixth Excellence , perhaps the most striking yacht ever to leave Abeking & Rasmussen ’s yard in Bremen, northern Germany. With her heavily reversed bow and acres of sheer glass windows reflecting back at me like a pair of aviator sunglasses, Excellence stopped me in my tracks as I gazed at her across the River Weser. In fact, work on the boat was in progress several years before the owner decided that he wanted a new yacht, and long before she would become the sixth Excellence . Andrew Winch’s design office had teamed up with Abeking to produce a radical concept. “The owner saw a preliminary model at the 2015 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and said, ‘I want that boat’,” recalls Winch when I meet him in Bremen to tour the yacht. “He came to us because we helped him step out of the middle market and out of his comfort zone. He’s had to be extremely brave and question whether he will like it in the end.”

At this point, the design had some of its key features in evidence – that bow, the huge areas of glazing and the flying-saucer-shaped pods fore and aft of each deck. But in other ways, it has changed dramatically, growing shorter and losing its proposed helipad as the curve of the bow was stretched further aft. The process was surprisingly quick. “After so many builds the owner is a very experienced specifier,” Winch says. “He works with a tick list and thinks it through methodically.”

Somewhat counter-intuitively, the best place to really understand the striking exterior of this yacht is inside – the mezzanine on the owner’s deck to be precise. Here, two decks have been cut away, so that your gaze falls 10 metres to the main deck below when you peer over the balustrade. The five-metre-tall sheets of glass that form the mirrored external skin of the yacht are displayed in all their glory. Two slim steel frames are the only support for the edges of these vast panes. It is a view into the heart of an engineering problem that Abeking & Rasmussen at first considered too difficult to solve. “It was a nightmare,” says senior project manager Jens Bottke before remembering himself. “Really a challenge.”

Despite the expansion and contraction of the aluminium superstructure, and the obvious movement caused by the yacht’s motion, it was not the fixing of these 1.3-tonne glass panels that presented the greatest problem. It was the fact that they needed to be perfectly rigid on the outside, so as not to distort the mirror finish, and provide excellent insulation to spare the yacht’s air conditioning. “The glass packages are actually four to six panes, complete with insulation layers and finishes,” Bottke says. At their thickest, they are 8cm thick. Add to that the need to create three-dimensional curves in places and you have a huge challenge that could be overcome only by using German technology and Italian engineering.

Heading out on to the side deck, I marvel at the 25-metre line of perfectly smooth glass. Bremen’s industrial riverscape is perfectly reflected from top to bottom. This blemish-free exterior hides other design and engineering feats, too. The life rafts are hidden in a bulwark cabinet so as not to spoil the yacht’s majestic lines. And you won’t find any hint of a ventilation louvre in the exterior, either. They are all disguised behind mirror-finish stainless steel, blending in perfectly with the windows. Abeking also had to design some smart exterior doors to account for the superstructure’s bevel and curvature. Each set uses a slightly different mechanism, swinging silently open on different-sized arms or gliding out on a single curved support. “I think there’s only one standard exterior door on the whole yacht,” Bottke says. “Structure and design-wise, it’s been our most challenging project.”

Challenges aplenty awaited inside, too: from details such as how to make an electric blind for a window that gets thinner as it goes up, to weaving filaments of precious silver into a composite that resembles metallic carbon fibre. The unifying theme for the interior is luxury cars, a nod to the origin of the owner’s fortune in car dealerships. “The boat has car detailing throughout,” Winch says. “There are many things you might recognise.” Those range from the black-and-white concentric circles on the saloon floor and ceiling that recall the tyres of a classic car, to the double-stitched leather detailing in the cabins. The ventilation louvres in the cabins are designed to look like the grille of a bonnet, and there are tyre-track patterns carved into the wooden panelling of a dayhead.

The interior strikes a balance between splashes of bright colour and dignified coffee tones – a bit like one of the owner’s favourite sports cars, in fact. Besides noble woods and fine Italian leathers, marble is the stand-out material on board. “There are more than 30 different marbles on  Excellence ,” says Winch interior designer Lizzy Hart. “And about 30 per cent is golden onyx.” The honey-toned stone is quarried in Chile and appears everywhere aboard – from the main guest corridor to the his-and-hers owner’s bathrooms. Here, the effect is particularly striking: the space glows as if it contains a hoard of gold.

Every cabin has a unique character, with its own feature headboard, and every public space has a rarefied list of marbles, precious woods and leathers. There are woods I’ve never heard of – tamo ash, blue ombre rippled sycamore, amboyna burr – and novel leather finishes. Minute detail is everywhere you look. In the owner’s suite, it is Macassar ebony panelling, wool carpets with crocodile pattern by Oliver Treutlein, and woven silver wire that makes the window mullions look like precious carbon fibre. And yet practicality is never far from the surface. All the high-tread areas are in limed oak, for instance, not vulnerable carpet.

Clever use of mirrors throughout the interior serves to extend sight lines and broaden perspectives. In the main saloon, for example, mirrors behind the louvres make the casing around the ventilation shafts disappear. There are also thin mirrored strips all the way around the top of walls in the cabins, which fool the eye into seeing more space. It has meant being equally cunning with the use of indirect lighting. Though the owner has made allowances for guests because he runs  Excellence  as a charter business, he was adamant that the boat was built entirely to his own taste. “ Excellence  was built to be a sporty, modern, comfortable yacht that could become a classic,” he tells me. “The interior is not designed for charter – it is luxury with tremendous space, beautiful fabrics and is comfortable to spend time on.”

All the same, he knows some of his guests will need to work, so he has put in a library/office where previous  Excellences  made do with a desk in a corner. There are tobacco leaves on the wall here, pressed into a rich pattern and trimmed with laser-cut silver leather. Birdseye maple is the feature wood, alongside cappuccino marble and tan leather tiles underfoot. It is a very calming space. And he specified the six guest cabins to be 25 square metres and of very similar comfort, to avoid any competition for “the big cabin”. The gym on the main deck had to be bigger than on the previous boats, and the spa area is among the brightest I’ve seen, with great views out of the sauna through the huge windows. There’s also a dedicated nine-seat cinema.

For all the richness of the finish, the atmosphere on board is comfortable and convenient. Take the main saloon, where you are greeted by deep cream-coloured sofas and a 1.8-metre-diameter coffee table. As we sit down, I have to check the natural urge to put my feet up. The owner anticipated this and requested golden onyx for the rim of the wooden table precisely so that it would resist wear and tear. It’s taken for granted that guests here will feel able to put their feet up. On the bridge deck, aft of the 14-seat outdoor table, there is a relaxed bar. And so it doesn’t block the view, it is sunken into the deck allowing guests to look over the top. The pool on the main deck below has removable bar seating in it, with more bar stools on the other side of the bar. This same pool also spreads dappled light on to the beach club below through a glass floor panel. Most guests will approach in this way, so the owner insisted on a space that at once welcomes them and showcases all the delights the yacht has to offer. He’s done away with the usual fold-up transom door leading into the bowels of the boat: Excellence features instead two curved sliding doors that give access from the large beach club into the tender garage.

And before you snort, realise that this is no ordinary garage. It has been designed and fitted out with a bar, comfortable seating and lined with the yacht’s best toys. As you step aboard, you spot the dive gear and wetsuits, Seabobs and RS200 sailing dinghy. You’re already excited about the experience that lies ahead. “I have spent a great deal of time on yachts and it is truly my passion,” the owner says. “I love spending time on board.”

The boat started in the Med and at time of press was due to cross the Atlantic to make the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show – she easily has the range to do that. With this project, the owner has completed a different sort of journey, building a yacht that will look edgy for decades to come. And though he is clearly very proud of the result, there is one thing he didn’t get quite right: “I felt the design would be very polarising, but I was wrong,” he tells me. “It appears that better than 90 per cent of the comments are extremely positive.”

It’s no surprise that a luxury yacht named EXCELLENCE has come out of the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard which is known for the quality and size of its builds. 80m/262ft EXCELLENCE went to take the  Exterior Design Award and  Finest New Superyacht Award at the sixth Monaco Yacht Show Superyacht Awards Ceremony  this year, a product of meticulous engineering and design spanning four years from concept to launch.

The journey began at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2015 when the Owner of a fleet of luxury yachts named EXCELLENCE saw a concept for an 80-metre by British design studio Winch Design that would be built in conjunction with Abeking & Rasmussen – a shipyard he had used before. The latest EXCELLENCE would become the sixth superyacht of his fleet to bear the name.

Striking glass exteriors

If there is one material that characterises a modern luxury yacht, it’s the use of glass: Gone are the small portholes and square windows of yesteryear to be replaced by sweeping floor-to-ceiling windows that connect those on board to the surroundings. Nowhere is this more evident than aboard M/Y EXCELLENCE, where the amidships section sports a three-tier glass exterior of 25m/82ft. This mirrored glass is 8cm at its thickest and acts as insulation to reduce reliance on air conditioning systems. Held in place only by two slender steel frames, she represents a staggering engineering achievement. All these glazed surfaces match effortlessly with her silvery-white hull and superstructure, and onlookers are immediately drawn to the curve of her inverse bow which further adds to her futuristic appearance.

More than just good looks went into the making of this motor yacht, and guests on board can treat themselves daily to the main deck aft counter-current swimming pool with a glass-bottom panel, a private Jacuzzi on the Owner’s deck, and the bridge deck aft sports a 14-person alfresco dining table, a sumptuous lounge along the stern and a bar.

Personalised interior spaces

The Owner wasn’t considering charter use when EXCELLENCE was built and the result is a stunning contemporary living space from Winch Design that takes inspiration from the art deco styling to be found along Florida’s coast. His passion for sports cars is also on display and paid tribute to in styling accents such as the Cadillac-style cream sofas in the skylounge that have metal grille detailing, or the drawer handles which mimic the badges found on the front of cars.

The makassar wood and marble tops contrast harmoniously with the ivory white carpets and upholstery, and accents in light taupe to bring everything together. There are over 30 different marbles used on board, with golden onyx. Colourful and playful artwork – such as the Mickey Mouse statuette – personalises different spaces on board.

Amenities certainly aren’t lacking inside either, as guests move to the nine-person cinema or the main deck spa fitted with hemlock and teakwood stone from Paonazzo, and containing a sauna that has excellent views out of its large windows. The tender garage opens up through side hatches to launch and retrieve the custom tenders and create a more alfresco environment for those taking refreshments at the bar between the beach club and the tender garage. There is also a great selection of water toys stored here, including Scuba diving gear, a RS200 sailing dinghy and Seabobs.

The engine room is almost forgotten about by guests who enjoy the latest technology for reduced noise and vibrations, but twin MTU 12V 4000 M65R diesel engines provide the power to cruise from one destination to the next at 14 knots or at a top speed of 17 knots when in a hurry.

Accommodation

There are seven en-suite staterooms to provide for up to 14 guests on board, and the Owner was adamant that the six guest cabins would be of equal size (25m2/269ft2 in area) and of equal luxury to avoid competition. Each room is finished in high-end materials such as makassar wood, marbles and leathers. Mirror-sheen headboards emphasise the space and light within each cabin, which has TV entertainment opposite the bed and a desk right beneath the broad windows for guests who need to continue work but don’t want to miss out on the adventure.

Excellence – owner’s cabin

The Owner’s suite in particular is furnished with a wool carpet and enjoys sweeping forward views through floor-to-ceiling windows, and oversized armchairs accompany the daybed and desk to create a functional private space elsewhere, the en-suite bathroom has crocodile skin-style frosting patterns on the large showers and directly outside is an alfresco lounge where guests can wake up to coffee in the fresh air. The Owner also has access to a library/office space where silver leather is pressed with tobacco leaves and birdseye maplewood surround those seated at the desk.

Luxury yacht EXCELLENCE is an example of revolutionary engineering which will no doubt lead to further changes in superyacht design in the future – and she will be thoroughly enjoyed by her Owner and his guests in the cruising seasons to come.

Vitruvius Yachts

New – 80m explorer.

80 meter luxury yacht walkthrough

Introducing the 80m ultimate explorer concept by Vitruvius Yachts

The London-based design studio Vitruvius Yachts has revealed the first details of its latest superyacht concept: an 80m go-anywhere explorer yacht.

With the design following closely in the footsteps of Vitruvius’ 54.9-metre Shinkai – built by Feadship in the Netherlands and delivered in 2021 – this new explorer is notable for its long aft deck which is ideal for storing a generous toy collection or even a helipad.

Designed to satisfy the most active and adventurous of owners, the explorer boasts a vast beach club and health centre below deck, enabling direct and convenient access to the sea for water sports.

80 meter luxury yacht walkthrough

This new vessel represents Vitruvius’ take on the ideal explorer superyacht. She maintains her superyacht DNA through the innovative design of her exterior, as well as through the exceptional space and comfort which are offered by her interior. She is also a true explorer through and through, and will have an exceptional autonomous range of 6500 nautical miles to take her owners anywhere in the world.

Housing 12 guests across a total of 6 carefully-designed staterooms, the naval architecture of the vessel is informed by the success of Vitruvius’ previous explorer vessel, Shinkai, with her steel hull created for optimal efficiency and adhering to the latest industry criteria for sustainability.

With performance and onboard comfort key to the new explorer vessel – she is expected to reach a top speed of 19 knots and cruise with ease at 14 knots – special care has also been given to controlling any rolling motions on board – a trait which is also key for ease of launching her onboard toys such as submarines. Furthermore, the addition of gyro/fin stabilisers is also in consideration for the vessel.

Finally, owners can also decide to choose an observatory option for the expedition superyacht, which would provide a 22-square metre space to bring those on board even closer to the beauties of the night sky, wherever they might find themselves in the world.

80 Sunreef Eco Catamaran [Boat Review + Video]

Take an extensive tour of the 80 sunreef eco in cannes, france with tony smith..

This article is a transcription of the 80 Sunreef Eco video from Denison’s YouTube Channel . Tune in daily to discover the latest yacht video walkthroughs from the world’s largest yacht video collection. Watch the full video below:

Tony: Hey guys, Tony Smith with Denison Yachting. First day of the Cannes Yacht Festival , and we have the honor to be on board the Sunreef 80 Eco . This is the first sailing Eco. It’s actually the first 80 Eco that’s out in the market place. You’re building a power and sale version of this?

Artur: The rule is that pretty much every model that you see in the range can be turned into an equal version. That means electric propulsion and then composite integrated solar panels. The unique thing about the boat and about the Sunreef Eco catamarans is that we found a way to integrate those solar cells into the composite, and you can see that’s just flush.

Tony: Yeah, totally flush.

Artur: Yes.

Tony: Okay with the gel coat and everything.

Artur: And that’s a patented solution. So we’re the only ones to do this. It lets you put solar panels pretty much everywhere on your boat. They’re also up on the mass, you can see all the way.

Tony: So that’s a carbon fiber mass there with the solar integrated.

Artur: One cool thing about those panels is that of course is the energy efficiency. That’s the first thing. They’re also an aesthetic feature. The solar panels look cool. They’re part of the boat’s design. You know, someone to just seamlessly integrate them with the color of the hull. Right now, you see you’ve got the black and the navy blue.

80 sunreef eco swim platform

Tony: So a lot of innovation going on in the boat, both from the technology basis as well as from the build quality. We have the same luxury finish that we’ve come to expect from Sunreef catamarans. It’s really a mega cat with the freeboard that you have and the room interior volume. All of the Sunreef 80’s have very nice swim platform, and they’ve really taken this to the next step. So what you’ll see is it’s got this beautiful curved surface here and it really extends way beyond. It’s almost twice as large or feels twice as large as the previous versions. So this can have a five-meter tender on it. But it’s way more than that. This is a platform that connects both of the hulls together. So both of the sugar scoops. You can seamlessly transit from one to the other. Note, they even did the flush cleats here. So they eliminate any tripping hazard there. And then this would be like a really awesome platform to do some scuba diving from. When it’s flush with the main deck that really extends the whole deck.

80 sunreef eco aft deck

The next space we’re going to look at today is this awesome aft deck here. Center line, we’ve got a lovely table. It’s a high low table. It may be a little difficult to see, but this table actually has carbon fiber accents throughout, and then the teak on the outside. And you’ll notice here at the hard top, we’ve got a really awesome disco light. This thing is incredible. It changes colors, it lights up the whole boat. It can go to the music as well as the underwater lights. All go to the music. On the starboard side, we’ve got a day bed, which is a really nice area to hang out. In the middle, we do have big storage lockers, and then over here on port, we’ve got a nice wet bar with cold storage down below.

80 Sunreef Eco salon

I absolutely love the interior on the boat here. What you’re going to see is we have two U-shaped settees, and really when you go from the 70 to the 80, like the seventies, they’ve got the elevated area here that you kind of have that for the cabin, but with the 80, it’s so big. The other nice feature that I love on the boat is these windows here are practically floor to ceiling. So as you look out here, they’re flush with the decks and then go all the way up. So you have great visibility, 360 visibility in the boat itself. So we got a full playing piano.

Tony: That’s awesome.

Artur: You don’t need to play the piano to impress your friends. You just sit here and pretend.

Tony: Excellent. So high low TV and this will pivot for us as well. And then behind that, since this is a galley down version, we actually have a full wet bar here. You’ll notice cold storage over on the port side as well as top side storage. And then there’s a wet bar here and your forward helm in industrial terms. This the HMI human machine interface, it’s program specifically for this vessel. And again, that’s one of the features I love on the Sunreef is that they have everything integrated together for your lights, your control edge, your tanking, you know, everything. So what most people don’t realize is a boat will actually consume a lot of energy just from the hotel loads. And the main one is the air conditioning. So with the solar panels, it’s able to power the DC powered air conditioning and with the more efficient gas based system, it will save on energy. How many state rooms are on here?

Artur: In here, you have the master and three guests. If I’m correct, yes.

Tony: Okay, cool.

Artur: So there’s one, two, yeah. Master and three guest cabins.

Tony: All right. Can we check those out really quick?

Artur: Yeah, sure. Let’s have a look at the master.

80 Sunreef Eco Master Stateroom

Tony: So walking down the starboard companion way, we come back into the master and this is really awesome. They ordered on this particular boat, a full hull side windows. Now, normally people recognize the Sunreef by the signature three vertical windows, I didn’t realize. But you can order it like this. Your main berth is in a forward ship, practically a king size bed. There’s plenty of storage here. This boat actually has a full walking closet just forward, and then after the bed, we walk into a massive on suite head. The second of four state rooms is found forward here on the starboard side. One great feature that I’ve noticed on this boat is we’ve got American 120 outlets. We’ve got European 220 outlets, USB and induction charging for your phone. So little details like that set Sunreef apart. Let’s head back and take a look at the VIP. Really awesome. Again, it has this lovely huge hull side window and the hatch that opens. A really nice, a thwart ship bunk with plenty of storage on the outboard and below. And what makes this the VIP? It also has a full walking closet here. So really nice wardrobe area there and an upgrade. Just behind this state room, you’re going to notice a very nice appointed on suite head. Let’s check out the galley really quick and then head up to the bridge.

80 Sunreef Eco VIP Stateroom

Tony: So coming down to the galley, we’re going to start in the forward area. And what you’re going to notice, this has a really awesome cute little nook. This is a great place for the crew to hang out as well as this is a very functional area to keep radios, any coffee mugs, any little things like that that the crew would want in their nook. The other nice thing that I love is we’ve got standing washer and dryer here, so this is a great location to get a lot of laundry done in the crew space. Moving forward, what you’re going to notice is we got a lot of light and visibility in here. We got a really impressive range as well as a dishwasher, deep well sink. Again, great visibility. Anything that you would need to cater and entertain a large group of people. On the inboard side, you have really great amount of cold storage on this boat. So two full size fridge freezers are available here. Down in the floor below, you’re going to notice we have a whirlpool stack deep freeze. All right, let’s take a look upstairs and then we’ll hit the front deck.

80 Sunreef eco flybridge

Among the many things, this fly bridge also has going on. You’re going to notice over here on starboard, we’ve got a complete wet bar with a full grill as well as cold storage, sink and waste. It’s really a beautiful area. It’s a barbecue out. Hang out with your friends. You can grill out for people that are on the sun deck. It’s just an awesome space. Forward to that, we’ve got two treadmills if you wanted to get a workout early in the morning. And then the last feature that really sets this boat apart is centerline. We’ve got some awesome floating furniture, very kind of modern furniture here, very interesting colors, and it’s just a super cool lounge area. So obviously the fly bridge has a lot going on. But they’ve really made a great use of this space. It really feels warm and like a fun boat to be on. Now when you’re underway, you’d move the floating furniture out of the way, and then what you’ll notice, you’ve got power Harken winches all the way across, and this is really the business end of the boat. So all the running lines come here, and this is where the crew would be sailing the boat from. It’s a very nice place to be, and I love the setup. They’re not wasting an inch of space on this boat. And then the helm compared to a traditional Sunreef.

Artur: There’s a camera on top of the mast that’s an overview of that. You can see your boat from up, right?

Tony: Oh, that’s cool.

Artur: And when you do the maneuvers, then you can see where you are exactly.

80 sunreef eco bow

Tony: Wrapping up here, we’re going to actually walk around to the forward cockpit area and show you that space. Across the bow here, you’re going to notice we have these two large trampoline which is standard for the Sunreef. And then we got the power furling here, and you’ve got the large split trampolines as well. And then storage through all these compartments. Does this have crew on the four piece?

Artur: You can also fit this like an additional crew space, yes. So one can be kept for storage and the other for crew.

Tony: Nice. And again, totally customizable, however you want.

Artur: Absolutely.

Tony: That’s awesome. I love how you’ve got the solar even on the brow of the boat here.

I got to tell you guys, this is an awesome place to be here in Canne France for the Yacht Festival. We’re wrapping up a full day of seeing boats and filming on boats, and we are just super excited and so happy that Sunreef allowed us to visit the Sunreef Eco 80. If you’re in the market for a boat like this, please feel free to reach out to the information blow and we want to thank Sunreef for allowing us to film on their boats. A real honor to be here in this environment and on this particular innovative electric boat.

New 80 meter Hybrid Explorer Yacht Concept from Gill Schmid

By Thom Esveld

Updated on December 31, 2020

Gill Schmid Hybrid Explorer 1

Together with Tim Dempers Studio and Dorriës Maritime in Germany, the brilliant yacht designers from Gill Schmid have imagined a brand new explorer concept. It’s a stunning 80 meter hybrid explorer yacht with a global range and meeting the Ice Class specifications. That means it’s the kind of yacht you can take anywhere with no problem.

The futuristic looking concept combines extremely well the functionality of an explorer yacht and the luxuries of a high end superyacht. The hybrid vessel comes in a two tone paint finish, with industrial silver for the operational and technical areas and pure white for the interior guest spaces. An interesting fact is the mirrored glazing exterior which makes the yacht blend in with its surroundings.

The hybrid nomenclature isn’t only for the visual aspects. The yacht can operate using both diesel fuel and electricity via the diesel-electric propulsion system, thus allowing the vessel reach eco-friendly only destinations as well.

Gill Schmid Hybrid Explorer 2

When it comes to fun, the new hybrid vessel comes with plenty of exploration equipment, including a 12 meter and an 11 meter tender, a Triton submarine and four Sea-Doo jet skis . The fully-enclosed tender bay can also serve as an entertainment deck which can be opened and closed depending on the weather.

What’s more, the yacht comes with a helipad. There’s also a full gym and a bright social area into a glass superstructure. The spa and Jacuzzi don’t miss as well and when the time to sleep comes, seven suites await the owner and his guests. The owner benefits of course of an apartment with private outdoor deck.

Among the many other amenities, you can count the cigar lounge, formal dining area, beauty hair salon and an outdoor workout area.

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

  • Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
  • But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
  • Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

Related stories

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."

Search continues for British tech magnate Mike Lynch and 5 others after luxury superyacht sinks off Sicily

Mike Lynch at federal court in San Francisco, Calif., on March 18.

PORTICELLO, Sicily — British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big US fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, near Palermo, sometime after 4 a.m. A tornado over the water known as a waterspout had struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

The ship had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and a waterspout struck precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another big ship nearby, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, wasn’t as badly damaged and helped rescue the 15 survivors — including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares.

Emergency services at the scene of the search for a missing boat, in Porticello Santa Flavia, Italy, on Aug. 19. British tech giant Mike Lynch, his lawyer, and four other people are among those missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Emergency services at the scene of the search for a missing boat, in Porticello Santa Flavia, Italy, on Aug. 19.

Fisherman Fabio Cefalù said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on-site for three hours, but didn’t find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The fraud accusations represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

Winfield reported from Rome. AP writers Danica Kirka and Sylvia Hui contributed from London.

This story has been corrected to reflect that the fisherman’s name is Fabio Cefalù, not Francesco Cefalu’.
