Depending on where you are in the US, these can be called docks or slips, but the two are synonymous at best. If you want to get technical with your boat dock terminology, a slip is just one of the many parts of a boat dock, the area where it is parked or stored, to be exact.

Other than that, docking spaces often comprise decking, also called a finger, featuring flotation supports, ramps, railings, and even a roof.

These structures and spaces are often what come to mind when we talk about where boats are docked, along with marinas and yacht clubs. Incidentally, a port or harbor is the stopping place of a ship, technically functioning as its docking space.

One advantage of these dry storage facilities is that they’re pretty affordable. Plus, by keeping your boat dry and off the ground, you save time and effort cleaning and antifouling the vessel.

These are a favorite alternative simply because they can save you a lot of money compared to other parking and storage options. Since your vessel will likely be placed on a trailer with minimal protection, though, this isn’t exactly a safe option. I suggest checking the security measures placed first-hand before deciding.

Tech continues to influence the boating industry, much like other major industries of its kind. These boat parking trends serve as clear proof of how far it has gone in doing that.

These take the usual stress out of parking boats and ensure smooth docking every time. With the help of premier technology like cameras, AI, GPS, and sensors, the system will basically do the proper adjustments for you to avoid collisions.

• Docking spaces are practical, no-nonsense, and more accessible to most people.
• Marina owners often invest in security surveillance for their premises, so that’s another plus.
• Floating docks can be expanded or removed based on necessity. During winter, for example, you can stow these docks away so they won’t get damaged – although that means you may have to look elsewhere for a long-term storage solution.
• Stacked dry storage facilities protect your boat from the elements, but obviously, this option already overlaps with long-term storage and not just parking per se.

I would prioritize the same factors as when I’m looking for boat storage options. Here are a few vital guidelines to remember when weighing your location options:

• First and foremost will always be security. What kind of neighborhood is the parking space in? What security measures are in place? Is there adequate lighting and criminal deterrence?
• Will the dock’s structure and space be suitable for your specific vessel?
• You don’t want to needlessly dirty your boat while it’s parked, so choose one that takes cleanliness seriously.
• How accessible is the docking space? Do you have to go through difficult obstacles every time? Is it near your home?
• What weather and water conditions will your boat be exposed to?
• Does it fit your budget?

Perform every essential step you would take if you intend to winterize your boat. On the whole, it requires you to:

• Thoroughly clean your boat’s interior and exterior
• Perform engine and fuel system maintenance (e.g., changing and stabilizing fluids and oil, fogging the engine)
• Remove and store the battery
• Keep mold and mildew at bay
• Reinforce security measures
• Do regular checkups

How much does boat parking cost on average?

This ultimately depends on location, amenities, boat size, type of parking or storage space or facility, and other variables. The state you’re in plays a huge role, based on my experience. In Rhode Island, for example, it’s usually $30 cheaper per foot than in Boston.

Dry storage costs more than parking in a marina slip. It could be $150 per month for the latter and $350 per month for the former, on average. Cheaper options like yards will always be available, which could charge you less than $100. That’s why, at best, I can give you a relatively wide range of $50 to $5,000 per month.

After all, we also have to consider yacht clubs where the minimum required size of the vessel is 30 feet. If lease monthly rates are $9.75 per foot for members, the costs can rack up before long.

Can I park my boat at home without a ramp?

Yes, but assuming your home has no other direct access to a body of water, a ramp will make your life easier. Without it, you may have to consider other options, like dedicating indoor boat storage at your home, especially if you have a garage or shed you’re not using. This way, you’ll still enjoy parking without extra cost.

Are there any alternatives to marina parking?

Any of the above parking options will do. I especially recommend docks, floating docks, dry storage services, or becoming a member of a yacht club with reasonable fees. Only consider yard storage if you’re completely confident that you won’t be putting your boat at too much risk.

Whether you need to park your boat on land, dock it at a marina, or tie it up at a private dock, plenty of options are available. Here’s a look at the choices for whatever size boat you’re contemplating.

In many ways, boat trailers are the easiest type of boat to park. The transportability of having your boat on the trailer means you get many more choices. It also means you can avoid high-cost marinas and tow the trailer to cheaper facilities inland.

It’s worth noting, of course, that trailering a boat comes with many costs. While it’s convenient, the cost of a tow vehicle can be immense. Unless you already drive a big truck, purchasing a truck and a boat seldom makes sense. Trucks are expensive, and the amount of fuel used while towing is astronomical.

For their costs, trailer boats do make it much easier to get fuel and maintenance done. While bigger boats will have to visit boatyards and get hauled out with a giant crane–which is expensive–a trailerable boat can simply get towed to any mechanic anywhere. 

Also, keep in mind that if you don’t already own the boat, limiting yourself to towable boats will limit the size of the vessel you can have. You can’t easily tow anything more than eight-and-a-half feet wide or about 30 feet long.

Trailerable boats also cost more to purchase. The convenience of being able to drive it and store it anywhere is valuable. If you compare trailerable boats to not trailerable ones, you’ll find the trailerable ones cost more. In other words, if you are budgeting what type of boat to buy, you will probably be able to afford a larger vessel by choosing one that isn’t trailerable.

Start your search for where to park boat trailers near your home. If you have a yard, driveway, or garage, you might be able to store the boat for free right at your house.

You’ll have to do some research first, however. Many municipalities and communities have restrictions on where to park boat trailers. For example, Miami-Dade County in Florida requires that they be kept to the side or the rear of the house, not in the front or on the street. It must also be hidden behind a privacy fence if stored on the side.  

Many homeowners’ associations are even more strict, often prohibiting boat storage. So even if you own your own land, you might be unable to keep your boat there.

The next solution is to find a long-term storage lot that will sell a parking permit. There are usually a few of these in every community, dotted around the neighborhood, that allow people to store RVs, boats, and commercial vehicles. They are often associated with a self-storage facility but sometimes at boatyards or maintenance facilities, and annual permits are often relatively inexpensive.

When you’re using the boat, storing the trailer is easier. If you’re using a park or marina’s boat ramps, they will include truck and trailer storage for a daily parking fee. Every place is different, so research before you head out. Many of them won’t allow overnight parking, for example. Sometimes a city or county will sell an annual pass to make the cost lower.

In-Out Storage Marinas

An alternative for trailerable boats is an in-out marina, sometimes called “rack storage.” At these facilities, your boat is stored on a cradle that is sometimes three or four boats high and launched with a special forklift. 

The benefits of in-out storage are many. First, it solves the boat parking problem–you have a marina spot and usually a place to store your trailer too. 

Another great thing about the rack storage is that it saves wear and tear on the boat. You won’t be storing it in the water at a marina, and you won’t be towing it down the highway. In fact, many rack storage facilities keep the boats inside huge barns or hangers, completely protected from the elements. 

Convenience is the biggest selling point, however. Hooking the boat up, towing it to the ramp, and then dealing with the crowds and traffic at the ramp can take time. The bigger the boat, the bigger the hassle. In-out rack storage removes the hassle. Then, all you do is drive to the marina, where you’ll find your boat in the water and ready to go.

To use your boat at an in-out facility, you simply call or email before you get there. Then, the team launches your boat for you and has it waiting at the dock when you arrive. When you’re done, the crew will recover the boat with the forklift and put it back on the rack. Many places even rinse it off with fresh water for you. 

If you want the convenience of hopping in and going whenever you please, you’ll want to keep your boat in the water.

If your boat is too big to put on a trailer, then in-water storage at a marina is your only option. 

Keeping any boat in the water means more maintenance costs. Saltwater is an acid that attempts to eat away at everything, including your propeller and through hull fittings below the waterline . Barnacles and sea critters love growing on the boat, and the bottom must be cleaned regularly to ensure your engine doesn’t overheat. Bare fiberglass is too hard to clean and is susceptible to blistering if stored in the water for too long. 

So boats stored in the water will need bottom paint or anti-fouling paint applied regularly, usually every one to two years. That requires hauling the boat out at a boatyard for repairs and service, a big expense. They’ll also need protection against stray electrical currents in the form of an anode and proper bonding. And all of this is in addition to the extra cost a marina slip will cost you. 

Marinas come in every shape and size imaginable. You’ll choose your marina based on the type of boat you have and the area you want to be boating in. 

The type of boat is important because if you have a sailboat, you will be limited to deeper waters with higher fixed bridges. Marinas behind low bridges or in shallow water might be much cheaper, but they’re only for small boats that meet the minimum water depth for a boat .

Marinas may be private, like docks behind your house or community docks set up for your neighborhood. Some marinas are owned by yacht clubs, and slips are leased only to the club’s members.

Most people use public marinas, however, which are open to anyone. Slips are leased on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis. Although this is rare, a few marinas will let you purchase the slip. For powerboats, some marinas have covered slips to protect the boat from the elements. 

Marinas often serve a specific type of clientele. For example, some may only accept transient boaters, while others are only for annual slip holders. Some are the best and cheapest liveaboard marinas in Florida , and others prohibit living on your boat. It takes a little shopping to find the right marina for your boat. 

There are only two alternatives to keeping boats at marinas or docks–moorings or anchoring. Both tactics have a couple of disadvantages, but they are cheaper than marina docks. You will, however, need to get the best dinghy for your boat to get to and from shore.

Leaving a boat on a mooring or at anchor is, in most cases, riskier than having it at a dock. It will be exposed to more weather and motion, including waves and wind. Moorings and anchors fail, whereas being tied to a dock usually involves many lines. Moorings are the better option between the two choices, but only if the mooring is inspected and maintained regularly by professionals. 

In busy ports like Annapolis, St. Augustine, Miami, and Key West, moorings are used both for visiting vessels and for long-term vessel storage by locals. In these cases, the city runs the mooring fields and leases them to boat owners by the day, month, or year. 

It’s also possible to install your own mooring in some places. A mooring is permanent, so you’d need to be committed to it. There is usually a permitting process with the harbormaster, city, county, or state to get approval for it. And, of course, you can’t just put it anywhere–you’ll need a spot protected from wind and waves and away from navigation channels.

Proper moorings are very strong and secure. They are usually screwed into the seabed with a Helix Anchor , but sometimes cement blocks or multiple traditional anchors are used.

Anchoring a boat is always a temporary solution. Unfortunately, many boat owners believe they can park a boat for an indefinite time by simply tossing out the anchor. This is not the case. 

Anchoring a boat securely requires the right equipment and constant monitoring. An anchor cannot hold in all conditions, and conditions constantly change on the water. A boat that is secured before leaving can pull free with the next thunderstorm or wind shift.

Unfortunately, because anchoring is generally free and has fewer restrictions, it’s sometimes used as a method of “cheap” boat storage or an option for living on a sailboat . It’s not uncommon for these boats to become abandoned, falling apart as the weather beats them, their anchor lets loose, and they blow ashore.

Abandoned and derelict vessels like this are a major problem for boaters everywhere. They’re unsightly and a contributor to pollution in the waterways. These things are visible problems to the public in a coastal area. Homeowners often find receptive listeners when they complain about these problems to their county or city officials. More often than not, the result is restrictions on who can anchor and where they can anchor.

Since homeowners and government officials are seldom boaters, the resulting regulations often affect visiting boaters who want to visit a community for one night before moving on. When a community turns away responsible boaters by restricting anchoring, the entire community misses out on the dollars they spend shopping, dining, and exploring the area.

History of Primorsky Krai

The first people settled in the region more than 30 thousand years ago. According to ancient legends, the coastal line was densely inhabited. In the Middle Ages, there were three empires on the territory of Primorye, which successively replaced each other: Bohai (698-926), Jin (1115-1234), Eastern Xia (1215-1233).

In the early 13th century, the territory of East Asia suffered the Mongol invasion. This led to the fall of the empire of Jin, but some provinces in the east preserved independence and formed an independent state known as Eastern Xia. In 1233, after another invasion this state ceased to exist too.

After that, the region was in ruins and attracted people persecuted in surrounding countries (bandits, adventurers, political dissidents). The first documented Russian presence in the region dates back to the summer of 1655, when the northern Primorye was visited by Russian Cossacks under the command of Onuphrius Stepanov.

In the middle of the 19th century, the Russian Empire began to strengthen its position in the north-west coast of the Pacific Ocean. In 1856, Primorskaya oblast was formed from the coastal parts of Eastern Siberia and Kamchatka. The territory of present Primorye was incorporated into the Russian state on the basis of Aigun (1858) and Beijing (1860) peace treaties that legalized the border between Russia and China.

Since then, the southern part of Primorye took its current shape. In 1860, Vladivostok was founded as a military post. Russian migration in the region began. In 1899, the Oriental Institute was opened in Vladivostok - the first higher educational institution in Eastern Siberia and the Far East, and one of the oldest in East Asia.

Further strengthening of Russian positions in the Far East was limited by the small size of the Russian population and remoteness from populated parts of the empire. Regular communication between St. Petersburg and Vladivostok was established after the completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1903.

From 1861 to 1917, about 250,000 peasants arrived in Primorye and founded 342 settlements. In 1917, the population of Primorye amounted to 307,000 people. By the mid-1920s, the local population reached 600,000 people. In the 1930s, forced industrialization and collectivization began which led to another wave of migration. The migration was both voluntary and forced (prisoners).

In 1937-1938, about 200,000 people of Korean and Chinese nationalities were forcibly deported from the region. Until the end of the 1980s, as a result of ethnic deportations, the Chinese and Koreans disappeared from the national composition of the population of Primorye.

In the summer of 1938, on the southern boundary of Primorye, in the area of Lake Khasan, there were military clashes between Manchukuo (a puppet state under Japanese control) and the Soviet Union. After two weeks of fighting, the USSR was able to repel the aggression. On October 20, 1938, Primorsky Krai with the capital in Vladivostok was formed.

After the end of the Second World War, Primorsky Krai continued to develop as a major industrial and agricultural region of the Far East also specializing in the extraction of natural resources. Rail and sea transport played a significant role in the local economy. Migration from the European part of Russia and Siberia continued, which led to an increase of population of the region from 1,381,000 people in 1959 to 1,978,000 in 1979.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the region’s economy went into decline, reverse migration in the European part of Russia began. At the beginning of the 21st century, the social and economic situation in Primorsky Krai improved.

Primorsky Krai - Features

Primorsky Krai is located in the south of the Far East, in the south-eastern part of the Russian Federation. It is bordered by Khabarovsk Krai in the north, China in the west, North Korea in the south-west, and is washed by the Japan Sea in the south and east. The largest cities are Vladivostok (601,300), Ussuriysk (172,000), Nakhodka (140,200), Artyom (104,500).

The maximum length of Primorsky Krai (from the mouth of the Tumannaya River to the source of the Samarga River) is about 900 km, the maximum width (from the valley of the Ussuri River to the coast of the Sea of Japan) - about 280 km. The highest peak is Mount Anik (1,933 meters) located in the north-easton of the region, near the border with Khabarovsk krai.

The climate of Primorye is temperate monsoon. Winters are dry and cold with sunny weather; springs are long, cool, with frequent changes of temperature; summers are warm and humid; autumns as a rule are warm and dry.

The main peculiarity - lots of precipitation and fog in summer. Summer is the period of typhoons. The average temperature in July is about plus 17-21 degrees Celsius, in January - minus 8-23 degrees Celsius.

Primorsky Krai - Economy

A number of large and unique deposits of various minerals have been discovered in Primorye. This region has the most powerful mining industry in the Far East of Russia. There are about 100 coal deposits (2.4 billion tons), 30 deposits of tin, 15 deposits of complex ores containing zinc, lead, copper, and silver. Gold deposits are located both in the south of the region and in the north.

The largest in Russia deposit of boron is located near the town of Dalnegorsk. Several phosphorite deposits are discovered on the shelf of the Sea of Japan. There are also several small oil fields, large deposits of germanium. Mountain rivers have significant hydropower potential. Diverse forests cover about 80% of the territory.

Primorsky Krai is the most developed region in the Russian Far East due to its favorable geographic location and abundance of various natural resources. The local economy is based on such industries as mining, timber, fisheries, trade, shipbuilding and repairing.

Primorye has a relatively well-developed transportation network. The main traffic artery is the eastern section of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Due to its proximity to Japan and the Republic of Korea (imports of relatively cheap used cars), Primorsky Krai occupies the first place in Russia in the number of vehicles in the population.

The seaports of Primorsky Krai play an important role in the economy of Russia. The largest container terminals in the Russian Far East are located here. Regional and international air flights are carried out from Vladivostok International Airport.

Attractions of Primorsky Krai

Primorsky Krai is known for its rich flora and fauna, the variety of landscapes, the warm sea in the south, springs with healing water. All this creates favorable conditions for tourism development.

In Primorye, there are more than 500 unique natural sites (lakes, waterfalls, ancient extinct volcanoes, caves, bays). There are six nature reserves and three national parks:

• Far East Marine Reserve in the Gulf of Peter the Great,
• “Kedrovaya Pad” Reserve,
• Lazovsky Reserve,
• Sikhote-Alin Reserve included in the UNESCO World Heritage List,
• Ussuri Nature Reserve,
• Khanka Reserve,
• “The Call of the Tiger”,
• “Udege Legend”,
• “The Land of the Leopard”.

The following places of interest are also noteworthy:

• The Rope Park in Andreevka - a sports-tourist trail that includes elements of sports tourism and mountaineering,
• Shanduyskie lakes - mountain lakes located in the north of Primorye,
• “Black Sand” beach located near the village of Zarubino in Aleut Bay - an interesting beach with volcanic black sand, which is considered to be curative,
• The lighthouse on the southern tip of Gamov Peninsula. Gamov Peninsula is the pearl of Primorye and the Far East.

PORTICELLO – The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for . The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout , and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told the AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are “designed to be unsinkable."

“And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever,” CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that “obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water,” suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Costantino also noted that sailing ships require “a greater competence” to be guided compared with motor boats.

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed . Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was the first to be recovered , on Monday. His death was confirmed by his family.

Friends of Thomas, best known as “Rick,” paid tribute to him on Thursday at a favorite bar in the Caribbean Island of Antigua. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of Thomas' last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told the AP.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht’s hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.

Wilton approves using Town Office parking lot to clean, drain and dry boats

WILTON — Selectpeople voted Tuesday to approve a place for boats to “clean, drain and dry” their watercrafts to try to prevent invasive species, including zebra mussels, from entering Wilson Pond.

The town will allow boats and other watercraft to be brought to the parking lot behind the Town Office before they are launched into the water and after it is pulled out.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife adopted the dry and drain process outlined in the 2023 public law “An Act to Minimize the Propagation of Invasive Aquatic Plants.”

The law states boaters are required prior to entering a water body and when preparing to leave launch sites to remove or open any devices designed for routine removal/opening to encourage draining areas containing water, excluding live bait containers. “This must be done in a way that does not allow drained water to enter any inland water of the state, according to a Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Rob Rogers of Chesterville, the newly elected president of Friends of Wilson Lake, told the Select Board the organization wants to get behind the law.

There is concern about invasive species getting into the pond, including zebra mussels that are in the U.S.

“The invasive, fingernail-sized mollusk is native to fresh waters in Eurasia. Their name comes from the dark, zig-zagged stripes on each shell,” according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. “Zebra mussels negatively impact ecosystems in many ways. They filter out algae that native species need for food and they attach to — and incapacitate — native mussels. Power plants must also spend millions of dollars removing zebra mussels from clogged water intakes.”

Rogers said the organization wants to get behind educating boaters on the law and would like to post a sign about it at the boat launch.

Selectperson David Leavitt wondered if people will take the time to read it and then have drive to the Town Office to drain their boats and go back and launch.

“I am not saying it is not worthy of doing,” he said, but believes the more people have to move might mean less compliance.

The Town Office is about a mile, maybe less, from the public boat launch on Canal Street, he said.

“Clearly it is not convenient and maybe not practical but it is possible,” Rogers said.

Town Manager Maria Greeley said they are open to other options but none were provided.

Literature will be given to boat inspectors and copies left at the Town Office for those registering boats.

The board approving having boats drained behind the Town Office and waived the fee for a sign permit.

The law was passed by the Legislature last year and there is an educational component to it,  Mark Latti, director of communications for the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, wrote in an email Thursday.

“For the past few years, we have provided boaters and anglers with a lot of information regarding “Clean, Drain, Dry”, encouraging anglers to do just that when it comes to their boat. Game wardens and the department are continuing to do that with this new law, as it is fairly detailed in what needs to be drained and where to drain it,” Latti wrote.

“We have sent out a lot of information through social media regarding this, and provided other collateral with the clean drain dry slogan on key chains, stickers and other items. Game wardens are also making sure people comply,” Latti wrote.

Redding's own 'Cheers:' The breakfast spot where everybody knows your name

When Lin Moss and her husband Charlie bought the Country Kitchen 31 years ago, they wanted more than a restaurant that served fresh-baked goods and classic American dishes.

They wanted to create a community where friends, families, coworkers and club members gather to eat and socialize and where repeat customers are greeted by name.

“It’s fun to have that feeling when you walk in the door" and staff remember "what you like to drink, your name, how you like your food,” Moss said.

Making an eatery into a community hangout means hiring and training staff for the dual job of serving meals and socializing.

“You have to learn how to speak with people. You only have a couple of opportunities to make people feel good before they leave,” she said.

The Country Kitchen offers comfort food for breakfast and lunch, but staff are ready to switch out the hash browns or fries for healthier choices, like fruit.

The restaurant bakes its own bread and rolls including sourdough and multigrain.

"We make all of our products here: Biscuits, sausage gravy. We came up with the recipe for our whole wheat bread ourselves. The only thing we don’t make are the English muffins,” Moss said.

The restaurant's most popular dish is the California omelet ($16.99): Three eggs, tomatoes, avocado, onion, spinach with sour cream and choice of cheese.

But the restaurant’s corned beef hash (also $16.99) runs a close second. Chefs roast the corned beef on site, chop it and prepare it with potatoes, onions and spices. The dish is topped with two eggs. Traditionally the eggs on hash are poached, Moss said, but most Country Kitchen customers prefer scrambled.

While customers are welcome to linger over their meal, they can also call and order to-go meals for pickup ― or just buy a giant cookie or a loaf of one of the restaurant eight kinds of bread ($6 to $8).

Country Kitchen menu includes gluten-free goodies

Creating community in a restaurant means having a menu that takes into account some customers’ special dietary needs, Moss said.

Her staff flips gluten-free pancakes and bakes gluten-free bread and cornbread. The restaurant sells its gluten-free goodies to go, but Moss recommended people pre-order gluten-free loaves ($12), which are baked in small batches because it doesn’t keep as well as other breads, she said.

For people avoiding sugar, Moss said she keeps sugar-free jelly on hand for toast, biscuits and other breads. There's also sugar-free syrup for the pancakes, waffles and French toast.

Definitely not gluten or sugar free, the “two-man” cinnamon roll ($6.99) measures about five inches across and almost two inches thick, according to Moss. But the most popular dessert is bread pudding ($7.99): Bread, eggs and cream made with added ingredients like blueberries, coconut or chocolate.

Cost for lunch entrees start at $8.99 for an egg salad or grilled cheese sandwich on a choice of bread and one side. Breakfast entrees start at $8 for pancakes with no extras, or for oatmeal with walnuts, raisins and milk, Moss said.

The most expensive entree on the menu is the steak and egg breakfast ($19.99), served with a choice of sides: A green salad, French fries, potato salad, fruit or coleslaw. The shrimp Ceasar salad is a close second, at $16.99.

While most Country Kitchen clientele are from Shasta County, Moss greets customers from the Bay Area and Southern California who regularly pass through Redding on Interstate 5 and other highways. Some guests told her they time trips to Washington and Oregon so they can stop for breakfast or lunch, she said.

Staff didn’t have to learn the names of some visiting customers. They recognized them the first time they came in.

“Ron Howard came through one time,” and regular customer Merle Haggard once brought Kris Kristofferson in for a meal. “He (Haggard) and my husband used to bass fish together,” Moss said.

Boats filling the parking lot?

It takes more than good food to grow community, Moss said.

“Going the extra mile” means setting up long tables for gatherings in the restaurant's second dining room, keeping a set of special eating utensils designed for a customer with severe arthritis and having a children’s corner with kid-size furniture, books, crayons and coloring pages, puzzles and other toys.

Many small-town restaurants offer a spot for locals to meet. “People end up picking their spot, and that’s where their community is,” she said.

Groups can call ahead to reserve a spot so there’s no wait for a large table, said Moss, who welcomes monthly Kiwanis clubs, a deejay group, car clubs and school organizations.

Every May or June, she and her staff open the County Kitchen’s doors an hour early for a bass fishing tour to eat breakfast on their way to Lake Shasta. “They take up the whole parking lot” with their boats, Moss said.

Lumber family retires ‘too early’, buys restaurant

The Dulong family opened the Country Kitchen in Dunsmuir, then moved it to Redding, according to Moss. They ran the restaurant for about 20 years before she and Charlie bought it in 1993.

While both grew up in Oroville, the two actually didn’t meet until Lin came to Redding in 1971. They were married three years later, she said.

They worked for Charlie’s family business, the Moss Lumber Company, until they retired in 1989. "We were way too young to retire," Lin Moss said, so they bought the Country Kitchen. A year later, the couple also bought the Omelet House next door. That space serves as the restaurant’s additional seating area.

After 37 years of marriage, Charlie died in 2013.

Now 73, Lin Moss is going strong. She and her staff like to creating new dishes, said Moss, and they experiment with off-menu specials. Check the restaurant’s blackboard for those weekly specials.

Chicago DNC 2024 security fences coming down, streets reopening as officials celebrate success

CHICAGO (WLS) -- After four days of viral speeches, surprise guests, protests, street closures and security measures culminating in the nomination of Kamala Harris for president, the 2024 Democratic National Convention is over.

Chicago officials are celebrating a job well done. Thousands of protesters expressed their opinions peacefully and Chicago police made less than 100 arrests over four days.

Starting early Friday morning, the security barriers were being dismantled and streets were reopening. All areas around the United Center and McCormick Place will be open again by Monday, August 26.

Crews began to dismantle the fences and barricades around the United Center and McCormick Place early Friday now that the Chicago Democratic National Convention has ended.

Chicago officials celebrate DNC success

Chicago leaders are celebrating a successful four-day Democratic National Convention as the city starts dismantling the security measures around the United Center and McCormick Place.

Officials including Mayor Brandon Johnson have moved just as fast to declare the convention a success and that Chicago's global image is in very good shape.

"As far as the world is concerned, yeah, look, I think it's pretty clear. People fell back in love with Chicago. They fell back in love with Chicago. I keep telling you this is the great love story," Johnson said Friday.

Fifty-thousand people came to Chicago for the DNC, truly putting the city's reputation on the line. The fact that the convention went off so smoothly, without any significant issues, thrilled organizers and officials.

Vice President Kamala Harris heads back to Washington after Chicago DNC

After making history, Vice President Kamala Harris is on her way back to Washington.

She spent another night in Chicago Thursday, but boarded Air Force Two with her husband Friday afternoon.

Harris accepted the nomination Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention at Chicago's United Center.

She's the first woman of color to be a major party's nominee.

She called on the nation to chart a new path forward.

Now, Harris has a little more than two weeks to prepare for a debate against former President Trump.

That's set for Sept. 10, hosted by ABC.

Removal of United Center security perimeter begins early Friday

Crews will begin to dismantle the fences and barricades around the United Center early Friday now that the Chicago Democratic National Convention has ended.

The dismantling of the security perimeter will begin at 1 a.m. Friday, OEMC officials said. The exact takedown timeline is subject to change.

Officials hope to open most of the major intersections near the United Center by noon Saturday.

All areas are expected to be opened by the end of the day on Sunday, and all DNC assets on the West Side are expected to be removed by the end of the day on Monday.

Breaking news, ‘entitled’ parking lot behavior leaves disabled driver speechless: ‘get a life’.

A woman with muscular dystrophy was left shocked after finding a printed card on the windscreen of her parked car at the local shopping mall.

“I parked on the level for Woolworths and Aldi in a disabled car park, because I am DISABLED,” the woman posted to  The Lake Macquarie Community Notice Board  group on Facebook to provide context. 

“I parked between a large stanchion and the bright yellow bollard with the yellow paint hatching on the floor.

“Admittedly I did park on a slight angle, but seeing as no one could park either side of me and I wouldn’t be causing an issue with anyone else, I left the car like that.”

“Someone with not much to do left this”

It was after she had finished her grocery shopping and returned to her car that she found something left by another shopper. 

“To my surprise and disappointment, someone with apparently not much to do left this [printed] card under my windscreen wiper.”

A photo accompanying her post is of the unwelcome professionally printed card which reads, ‘HEY YOU SUCK AT PARKING’ in bold font with, ‘Even a five year old knows how to stay inside the lines’ underneath. 

The woman was not happy and wrote the next part of her post directly to the person who left the note.

 “Honestly mate…get a life. Do you have nothing better to do than harass disabled shoppers? 

“Maybe you could put your money to better use than getting cards printed anonymously by donating to a disabled charity.

“As your card states, I WAS taking up only ONE space per car.”

“Sick of these parking ‘cops'”

The post garnered hundreds of comments, many from drivers who also had experience of unofficial parking reviews and cards like this one.

“Sick of these parking ‘cops’,” wrote one user.

“I often have to park in two spaces because there is no disability parking left and you can’t fit a wheelchair up the side of the car.

“If it doesn’t affect your life just move on and stop being up in peoples business. So sorry this happened to you.”

Another member of the group went one step further: “It’s bullying. Don’t give it another thought.”

With a third person relating they have had a similar experience with one of these printed cards on a day where they were helping their elderly father.

“I’ve also got a disability permit and I was parked in a disabled angled parking spot on the street… I had my elderly dad with me who I was taking to an appointment. 

“If anyone is thinking of putting these on other peoples cars maybe think about the effect it might have on the other person. You don’t know what they are going through.”

One woman commenting was shocked not so much at the card, but at the fact someone spends their day putting them on windscreens for ‘fun’.

“So someone spends their weekend prowling round carparks looking for cars to put their specially printed cards on (do they hide behind pillars to watch peoples reactions, perhaps film it?). 

“Do they also have specially printed cards for other minimal misdemeanors?! The mind boggles! Eww!”

“I love the card!”

Opinion was divided however as many people commenting felt that this type of card, which apparently is sourced from online shop Temu, is just a bit of fun. 

“I love the card,” wrote one user. “Don’t be so offended…you know you parked at an angle… laugh it off.”

Plenty of other group members agreed, with some asking where they could get hold of cards like this for their own use.

Another added: “The way I park I would have a big collection of those cards! Laugh it off!”

But to those who found it funny, one woman had some advice about seeing the world from a different perspective.

“Shows how ignorant and self-entitled people are”

“Just shows how ignorant and self-entitled some people are, such small minds they can’t possibly see this from the point of view of someone with a disability out doing their best. 

“Hard to ignore because it’s just another thing you need to deal with that others don’t. 

“And the people here saying ‘get over it, it’s just a joke’… maybe they should walk in your shoes for a few weeks and see how they feel then.”

Finally, one user left a tip that many of us need reminding of: “In a world when you can be anything, be kind.

“It is the gift you give to yourself.”
