Alfred Mylne Glen-Coats Gaff Sloop, DUET

McGruer & Co Ltd Clynder, Alfred Mylne Glen-Coats Gaff Sloop Built 1926 / £35,000, VAT paid

Alfred Mylne Glen-Coats Gaff Sloop, DUET 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

Alfred Mylne Glen-Coats Gaff Sloop, DUET is a captivatingly pretty yacht, originally built in 1926 with an Alfred Mylne pedigree and thoroughly restored by her current owner. She has been fully optimised and has proved herself to be a phenomenally successful silverware collector in the Vintage Class at the Mediterranean classic regattas.

Compact and very easy to handle and to look after, she provides a massive amount of fun both on the regatta circuit and also for local sailing.

With her bermudian rig installed, she is eligible for Second Rule 6M Classic class and is very competitive, as shown when she won the French 6M Classic Opens in La Trinité on her way down to the Mediterranean.

DUET is now stored under cover in a barn close to the Berthon Sales Group HQ in Lymington in the UK, where she and her extensive kit can be easily viewed.

On the market as her owner’s plans have changed, and has retired from classic yacht racing. She is a very special piece of our maritime history that also wins races and turns heads. She is being offered at a very modest figure and is VAT paid both in the UK and Europe.

We have been instructed by the owner for a prompt sale, and hence the paltry asking price.

She now has an additional Bermuda rig in her inventory, for ease of use and for competiton in the 6m class.

There is also an additional suit of virtually new North 3DL sails available for an extra fee.

Alfred Mylne Glen-Coats Gaff Sloop, DUET was designed by Sir Thomas Glen-Coats and built by the renowned Scottish yard McGruer & Co in 1926 to compete in the International 6 M class.

Thomas Glen-Coats after completing his apprenticeship worked as a naval architect for Alfred Mylne & Co and specialised in the metre class; producing some wonderful race-winning yachts. Born into the famous Coats cotton dynasty of Paisley, he owned many yachts that he had designed himself. Considered an illustrious designer in his own right, his most famous victory was winning the gold medal for Great Britain in the 1908 Olympics; that race contested in his home waters of the Clyde. Sailing HERA, Glen-Coats pushed the Alfred Mylne designed yacht MOUCHETTE into silver medal position – thus securing an immortal Olympics one-two for A. Mylne & Co.

Following the war DUET became a “Q Class” handicap cruiser with the addition of her attractive cuddy / cabin and interior accommodation etc. She was subsequently restored by the International College of Boatbuilding and displayed at the London Boat Show as an exemplar of their work and skill. In more recent years, she has had refits by leading Lymington boat builders, Steve Etheridge and Neville Hutton.

In 2011, DUET took overall victory in the Yarmouth Old Gaffers Festival, held annually on the Isle of Wight, in which 150 plus gaff rig yachts took part. Then on her way down to the Mediterranean she competed in and won the Open Championship for International Classic 6 M Class at La Trinite-sur-Mer. Since then she has raced from her Cannes base, winning several races including the Yacht Club de France “Coupe d’Automne” in 2012 and the Vintage Class overall at Les Voiles d’Antibes in 2013. In 2014, she was 3rd in Les Voiles d’Antibes and 2nd at the Régates Royales Cannes. DUET has a 2014 CIM certificate, APM 245 and is also 6 M certificated with Bermudan rig. An extensive selection of original drawings is available from the Alfred Mylne design archive.

Alfred Mylne (1872-1951) was one of the most successful yacht designers of his generation. Apprenticed to the famous George Lennox Watson, he became close friends with illustrious rivals including William Fife, Uffa Fox and Olin Stephens. Mylne was instrumental in establishing one of the most celebrated and successful rating systems in yachting history, the International Meter Class Rule, a success which owes itself in great part to Alfred's philosophy on yacht design.

Starting his yacht designing career with G.L. Watson in 1892, the young Alfred took an early interest in the trend at the time for "plank-on-edge" racing yachts. These narrow beamed yachts relied on heavy lead keels to maintain stability. Tremendous forces ran through the rigging into these narrow beam craft and led to some infamous cases of yachts being lost at sea. The rating rule of the time encouraged the development of these unseaworthy craft, and moreover these yachts with their deep keels and lack of interior volume had little use as cruising yachts following their short racing careers. It was against this backdrop that Mylne established his design philosophy of Grace, Pace and Space:-

  • Grace - A yacht is an expression of a yachtsman's soul, and needs to inspire both at speed and when sitting quietly on a mooring, therefore it must look good from all angles.
  • Pace - Yachts should be swift and handle well so as not to tire the helmsman and crew, and deliver them without undue delay to their destination.
  • Space - A yacht should be built to last "50 years" - in other words a racing yacht must be able to be used for cruising after its racing life is complete, and therefore must have useful interior volume.

Inspired by Mylne, the international rule established in 1906 not only established a rating system, but also included requirements for strength (all yachts were required to comply with minimum structural scantlings established by Lloyds Register), and the larger yachts had minimum requirements for interior accommodation for owners and crew.

In 1912, Alfred's brother Charles opened the family yard "Bute Slip Dock" on the island of Bute, providing Alfred with a dedicated outlet for his design talents and a place where new ideas could be developed. Such was the prestige and success of the yard and its superbly trained craftsmen that it was given over to the construction of seaplane hulls during the First World War. These flying boats required intricate work and highly skilled craftsmen. The new techniques and new materials employed during the war years were later used with great success (balsa cored plywood interiors for example) in subsequent yacht builds - a philosophy of innovation and applying new technologies that still inspires our company which continues the Mylne name today.

Wooden Ships Comments on this Alfred Mylne Sloop

Designed by Alfred Mylne and co. and built by the Bute Slip Dock Ltd in 1961.

With 4 known previous owners she has apparently spent most of her life in Scotland, mainly cruising the west coast.  Bought by the present owner in 2011 and refitted at that time to include checking keel bolts and new standing rigging.  The boat has been re-wired in July 2021.

A very elegant boat, set up for single handed sailing, she is easy to sail alone or with a crew and offers good performance for cruising and racing.  Interior volume is better than might be expected with 5 berths and over 6’ headroom.

Currently the yacht is in need of a refit and her asking price has been adjusted accordingly.  Although a detailed survey has not been carried out it is understood the deck is in poor condition in places, the paint and varnish needs a complete refit and some internal systems such as wiring need attention.  More detailed information available on request about the scope of refit work required.

Described by Ian Nicholson, well known surveyor and author as “one of the loveliest boats in Britain.”

BROKER'S COMMENTS courtesy of Sandeman Yacht Company

LADY TRIX is an Alfred Mylne gem: celebrated, as are many Scottish-designed classic yachts in France, with Monument Historique Classé Patrimoine Maritime et Fluvial status, and by Yacht Club de Monaco as "The Atlantic Stradivarius"; given a new life under present ownership after 6000 hours of artwork by restoration expert Bruno Barbara; and with a reputation backed up by a superb trophy list for a turn of speed larger yachts would be jealous of. This is sailing in its purest, least complicated, and most aesthetically pleasing form; her first owners collected art works by the likes of Dürer, Rembrandt and Whistler – it all make sense. What fun can be had sailing LADY TRIX with a bunch of friends, or simply as a couple!

Alfred Mylne design No. 170 LADY TRIX’s origins are inevitably linked with the story of the wealth generated courtesy of the Firth of Clyde, Glasgow, and west central Scotland’s position as “Workshop of the British Empire” through Victorian and Edwardian times; the resulting conspicuous consumption in the commissioning of fabulous “salt water palaces” by those shipbuilders and engineers who profited by it; and the consequent carte blanche enjoyed by Scotland’s three big names in yacht design: Fife, Watson and Mylne. But for one of the most innovative and successful of those engineering families, yachting would remain a smallboat activity, undertaken in exquisite small yachts of such undoubted pedigree that they would be cherished more than a century later, perhaps paralleling their passion for collecting works of art by Dürer, Rembrandt and Whistler to name but a few. TRIX’s (as she was launched) first owner Catherine Spence Howden’s father, James Howden (1832-1913), ensured a comfortable life for his family, initially as a successful designer and builder of ships’ steam engines and boilers, and more particularly from his perfection and practical application of the ‘Howden Forced Draft System’ which doubled the economy and efficiency of marine steam engines and was employed most noticeably during his lifetime in the Cunard liners MAURITANIA and LUSITANIA. The company that bears his name still trades to this day, and notably in the late 20th Century designed and built the boring machines for The [English] Channel Tunnel. Catherine and her step-brothers James and William were typical ‘Clyde Corinthians’ of the late 1890s and early 1900s: young sailors who preferred to take the helm themselves rather than be sailed around by a professional. Until his untimely death at Montreux, Switzerland, aged 25 in 1908, James had been owner of the former Royal Clyde Yacht Club 23ft lwl Class cutter THISTLE. And William had begun the family relationship with Alfred Mylne in 1907 with the commissioning of the beautiful 40ft gaff cutter cruiser/ racer ELVIRA, built by McAlister of Dumbarton when that yard was also well underway with a virtual production line of Mylne-designed metre class racing yachts that would eventually number from 6-Metres to the almost 100 feet 19-Metre OCTAVIA. Not to be outdone by her younger siblings, 37-year-old Catherine commissioned from her Glasgow West End neighbour and exact contemporary Alfred Mylne the very pretty, fast day-sailer TRIX, built by one of the designer's favourite smaller builders, Archibald Malcolm at Port Bannatyne on the Isle of Bute. Her original name may be from the Latin girl’s name meaning “bringer of joy”. Catherine would have welcomed such joy in her life after the very recent death of her brother, and TRIX was and is imbued with all the gorgeous aesthetics Mylne learned from his illustrious mentor George Lennox Watson, and developed on his own account in Glasgow from 1896. By 1909 Mylne was at the peak of the early stage of his career and must have been astonishingly busy. But the design of TRIX would undoubtedly have been a lot of fun, because it was not to be hindered by the restrictions of any rating rule. TRIX remained one of the Howden fleet until 1934: to the First World War registered in Catherine’s name, and afterwards under William’s ownership. After a brief ownership by F. Glen Seligman of Glasgow, in 1936 she crossed Scotland, presumably via the Forth & Clyde Canal, to a new base at Granton on the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh under Almond Yacht Club member Dr R.M. Craig’s ownership. It was probably under the ownership of Seligman or Craig that the coachroof seen in the 1970s photos here was fitted. By 1939 she was back on the Clyde at Gourock, owned by John Andrew Malcolm of Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. After the Second World War, Clyde Cruising Club member William Ewing of Dumbarton, believed to have worked as a ships' carpenter at the William Denny Bros. shipyard there, became owner. Ewing renamed her THISTLE, and this is how she is still remembered by Clydesiders of a certain age under succeeding ownerships by: 1968: Frederick Stewart Stang (Clyde Cruising Club) 1970: Dr Andrew Motherwell (Royal Gourock YC) 1975: Dr James Buchanan (Otter Ferry, Argyll) 1978: Frank & Jenny Coghill (Cardwell Bay, Gourock) Under the Coghills, THISTLE proved a fierce competitor in Clyde and west coast of Scotland handicap racing of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, and - famously at the time - won her class overall and the Tobermory Trophy for best all-fleet overall corrected time result in the 1980 edition of the Clyde Cruising Club’s legendary Tobermory Race. A contemporary Scottish report of her performance will read very true to those who have tried to race against her past and present… “[THISTLE’s] performance certainly took the wind out of the sails of the many owners who paid 10, 20 or 50 times as much for their latest glassfibre racers, plus a row of expensive instruments to consult and all the go-fast gadgets the modern mind can devise to foist on the owner who wants that extra quarter of a knot. But in the light wind and sea conditions that suit her, the varnished sloop is as slippery as an eel.” In 1982 THISTLE entered her last Scottish ownership. Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club member Bill Courtney fell in love with her sweet lines just as every previous owner had, and kept her moored on the upper Firth of Clyde’s Gareloch. Her French story began there in the mid 1990s. France-based maritime consultant and marine artist Reginald Marsh-Feiley became her next suitor, finding THISTLE on the Clyde and having her restored close to original deck configuration and additional bottom structural work by David Raeburn's Clyde Classics at Renfrew near Glasgow. Marsh-Feiley also restored close to her original name: just TRIX being already taken on the British register, she became LADY TRIX. In 1996 she was trucked to her new home at Île-aux-Moines in the Gulf of Morbihan, Brittany. After a subsequent period of French ownership, LADY TRIX was discovered by her present owner who turned out to be the guardian angel every yacht of a certain age needs, entrusting her to the renowned rebuild and restoration skills of Bruno Barbara of Candela, La Rochelle. Relaunched in 2007 by her new Godmother, Annette Roux, and Godfather, Philip Plisson, LADY TRIX has proven just as slippery as ever in the expert regatta hands of French sailing legends Bruno Peyron, J.P. Dick and Pierre Follenfant. In her centenary season LADY TRIX made her major classic regatta debut at Les Voiles de Saint Tropez 2009 and cleaned up; she has continued to do so into her 110th year, most recently winning the La Rochelle St Jean trophy, gaining 5th at Monaco Classic Week and 3rd at Régates Royales, Cannes. She subsequently gained Monument Historique Classé Patrimoine Maritime et Fluvial status in France. LADY TRIX is therefore a national treasure of both France and Scotland - vivre The Auld Alliance! ©2024 Iain McAllister/ Sandeman Yacht Company Ltd.

BROKER'S COMMENTS

Designed by Scottish legend Alfred Mylne and built in 1926 by A.M. Dickie and Sons, CHICANE’s beauty and sailing qualities have kept her in a one family ownership since 1958 and moreover inspiring them to commit to her restoration. Of the quality of this there have been very few comparable in the classic yacht arena - indeed the names of those contributing read like a who’s who of experts in this field and their achievement is a boat you could not build for three times the listing price. The late Olin Stephens considered the CHICANE restoration the finest he had ever seen and some of the most respected shipwrights have likewise been left spellbound by it. A masterpiece therefore but at 56 feet on deck CHICANE is a useful size, practical and an awesome sailing boat waiting for the next chapter.

Early history is still being researched but Peter Nicholson once told her current owner he remembers CHICANE at moorings on the Solent from his boyhood years. There are numerous Beken photographs recording CHICANE's history pictorially, one of which in 1934 shows her original gaff rig while another in 1948 has her sporting a Bermudan rig. Throughout she has remained a cutter with elegant bowsprit and three lofty headsails. In the 1950s CHICANE underwent several radical changes. Her bowsprit was removed and boom shortened. Her doghouse was moved aft and lowered in profile. That not only removed a signature Mylne feature but effectively cut the cockpit in half. Moreover as all access below was that way any privacy of the owner's aft cabin was lost. Notwithstanding she was still a beauty to behold - and during her subsequent restoration and rebuild all these changes were put right. In 1958 William Kempe sailed CHICANE to Bermuda, where she has remained ever since. His nephew Reid bought her in 1975, proudly carrying his new bride Lucia aboard over the gunwales in 1976 – to live aboard for their 1st year together - so CHICANE has remained there with only 2 owners now for well over half a century. CHICANE has recently undergone a full restoration information on which is provided below.

Restoration and refit

CHICANE has been lovingly restored - principally by shipwrights Joe Postich and Wendy Bliss, themselves alumni of the first Apprenticeshop in Bath, Maine, brainchild of the legendary Lance Lee. One of the first ‘woodenboat’ institutions the Apprenticeshop led the wooden boat renaissance in the US if not World wide. Methods and materials have been traditional with the use of modern materials when appropriate. The work has involved tens of thousands of silicon bronze fastenings, thousands of feet of cotton and oakum caulking and a traditional laid teak sprung deck. The process has effectively renewed most of the yacht. What remains of the original is essentially her shell; half the stem, keel, the stern post and all of the original Burmese teak planking. The planks were left in place during the re-build with frames being renewed from the inside. All the rest is new. All floors are new and of mixed construction Fabricated silicon bronze Composite; part wood - 200 year old long leaf yellow pine - and part silicon bronze All frames are new Black locust double sawn (double futtocks bolted with silicon bronze bolts) alternate with steamed 2 x 2 inch white oak. The bases of all double sawn frames are dovetailed into the keel to ensure security. The laminated teak bottom sections of all dovetailed frames are glued with Resourcinol The rig The rig and sailing gear have been designed with the combined efforts of Tom Cunliffe, Paul Goss and Don Costanzo using the original rig drawings by Alfred Mylne. Reverting to the original rig requires a taller mast, which has not yet been completed. The bowsprit however has been and is a thing of beauty. Fittings All bronze bowsprit and rig fittings were designed and manufactured by the late Harry Spencer – the last job he did before he died. Systems and electricals All systems are of the highest quality and are worthy of particular mention. Electrical systems are often problematic or not substantial enough – not so in this case. Wendy Bliss who worked alongside Luther Goff designer of the entire electrical system, has written up detailed manuals of the system; the quality of which has impressed visiting boat owners and builders alike. Team input While the skill, dedication and aesthetic sense of shipwrights Joe and Wendy have been key to the quality and authenticity of this restoration, early advice and expertise was forthcoming from Ian Nicolson and David Ryder-Turner of A. Mylne and Company and Gordon Swift and Giffy Full also of Woodenboat School fame. Further input, support and advice came from a host of wooden boat and system experts including Paul Goss, Tom Cunliffe, Theo Rye, Donn Costanzo, Harry Spencer, Bob Snow, Duncan Walker, Mark Ratsey, Mike Toomer, Mark Webby, Jeff Law, George Moffett, Joe Liener, Luther Goff and John Ford. Most of this input was given free of charge because the project was so admired ! In addition to this cast, CHICANE has been visited over the years by a 'Who's Who of Yachting'; Elizabeth Meyer, Olin Stephens and Ross Gannon to mention a few. An article in WoodenBoat (July/Aug 2009) reports the legendary Olin Stevens to have stated the Chicane restoration was one of the finest he had ever seen!
