King of Carbon: Michael Schmidt of YYachts

  • January 25, 2022

An Admiral’s Cup winner and former owner of Hanse Yachts, Michael Schmidt launched YYachts in 2016 to build 70-100ft carbon-fibre sailing yachts that are fast, luxurious and easy to operate, with sales rising for the upcoming flagship Y9.

Michael Schmidt developed YYachts to build carbon yachts

Michael, can you give a brief overview of your yachting life, in building, selling and racing?

I have been involved with boats since I was a little boy. I grew up on the water in Kiel and I went sailing whenever there was time … or not! Later, with the brokerage company Schmidt & Partner, I traded in yachts of all sizes, then with Yachtwerft Wedel I built some of the fastest IOR racers of the 1980s (including Pinta, Düsselboot, Outsider and Container ).

In 1985, as skipper of Rubin , I won the Admiral’s Cup for Germany. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, I moved to the former GDR (East Germany), founded a new shipyard in the historic Hanseatic port of Greifswald in 1990 and gradually built it up into a big player. When I left there and virtually retired, the YYachts brand slowly emerged as I was looking for a yacht for myself.

Over a dozen units of the Y7 have been built

What exactly what were you looking for?

I was looking for a light 80-footer with a good design that I could even sail alone. When I didn’t find anything like that on the market, I started with my own concept. The real challenge is to reduce a yacht to the essentials. That way, there are fewer sources of error and only a very small crew is needed.

Our credo at YYachts is ‘the simpler the boat, the purer the sailing experience and the greater the pleasure’. In addition, a yacht must be as light as possible so that it already sets sail when others are still motoring.

Schmidt built Cool Breeze (the first Y8) for himself

Having decided to build your own yacht, why did you choose Lorenzo Argento for the design of Cool Breeze , the first Y8?

Lorenzo, who worked for Brenta Yacht Design at the time, won the design competition. At YYachts, we like to work with Italians. Their understanding of design harmonises perfectly with the demands of us and our customers.

It seems like a major investment to start a new shipyard and brand, so what led to the desire to create the Michael Schmidt Yachtbau facility on the Baltic Sea and the YYachts brand?

I have not only invested in yacht building but in different areas and industries. The construction of the shipyard was necessary because there was demand. And only in a modern shipyard can production be as controlled as is absolutely necessary for such yachts.

Michael Schmidt Yachtbau began operating in late 2016

The entire production facility was built from scratch in record time in 2016 and was ready for production in December of the same year. We are passionate about building light, fast sailing yachts from 20-30m offering maximum comfort. Everyone at the shipyard loves the sea, just like our yacht owners do.

Can you tell us about your facility and production methods?

We build the hulls, decks and rigs exclusively in carbon-fibre and use our specially heated paint shop to finish them to perfection. Each yacht is oven-tempered to permanently bond the many layers of carbon-fibre and resin together, giving the hull strength and solidity.

The specially heated paint shop

The production area is equipped with modern, technologically advanced systems, but at the same time simple and straightforward to live up to YYachts’ ‘keep it simple’ philosophy. We develop concepts that simply work but do not sacrifice comfort or good design.

In the production process, the various components and interior areas of the boats are built in modular processing to optimise production time, efficiency and precision of assembly. This allows YYachts to reduce production times and avoid downtime. Production time is around six months for the Y7, 11 months for the Y8 and no more than 18 months for the Y9, YYachts’ flagship.

What are the advantages of carbon?

Carbon-fibre is the forward-looking material that will revolutionise yachts in the coming decades. It was the preferred construction material in aerospace and was then successfully used in high performance sports such as Formula 1, America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race.

The Y7 is YYachts’ best-selling model

Today, YYachts uses this advanced material to produce lightweight yet luxurious carbon yachts that are very easy to sail. In the design and manufacturing of our yachts, the hull, deck, entire structure, bulkheads and rigging are made of carbon-fibre, predominantly epoxy resin. This achieves very high strength and rigidity with a low weight.

Compared to conventional builds, our yachts are up to 50 per cent lighter, which improves sailing performance. Our yachts are optimised for low weight in every detail, so they sail at very good speed even in light winds. This also means transfers under engine can be largely dispensed with, which significantly reduces fuel consumption, an example of our focus on sustainability.

Why is sustainability important to you?

Because the wind is free, sailing is one of the cleanest, most ecological ways to travel and enjoy your holiday. We make concrete efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels on board and minimise our ecological footprint.

The custom-built Tripp 90 uses eco-friendly Lignia wood for its decking

YYachts has introduced many innovations over the years such as replacing teak decks with Lignia wood, a natural wood with a much lower ecological footprint. This wood is an alternative to the classic Burmese teak, which is heavily affected by deforestation.

Other new, innovative developments at YYachts include using sandwich materials made from flax or recycled PET bottles to replace traditional construction materials.

Instead of implementing complex high-voltage propulsion systems, we run the yacht with two engines, each with an additional alternator that charges the large battery banks in less than 10 hours. In addition, we install solar panels on the fixed bimini that provide another 4-8kW of charging power during the day.

Interior of a Y7

Why did you choose Bill Tripp to design the Y7?

Bill Tripp is one of the world’s best designers and naval architects. He’s very experienced and the yachts he has designed have won numerous regattas. His standards are the same as ours. By using carbon-fibre and lightweight material in the luxurious interior of the Y7, we achieve a high sail-carrying capacity and a large keel weight, which results in a fast 70-footer.

Due to the modular construction, the layout can be adapted to the owner’s wishes. The stern garage is installed transversely in the stern, completely watertight, which creates more volume in the interior. The crew has separate access to their cabins in the cockpit. All halyards, sheets and extensions run directly to the steering columns, so the helmsman can always operate the Y7 alone.

The new Y8 offers 20 per cent more volume than the original

What are the main differences in terms of space and features on the Y8 and the upcoming Y9?

We are currently launching a new Y8 with 20 per cent more interior volume than its predecessor. This results in many different layout options. For example, the owner’s suite with a separate saloon can be located either in the bow or in the stern where it has direct access to the cockpit. The galley can be installed open or closed, and three or four cabins can be fitted. (For more details, see link below)

Germany’s YYachts developing new Y8 designed by Spain’s Surge Projects YYachts by Michael Schmidt Yachtbau is building a new Y8 designed by Palma studio Surge Projects that offers 20 per cent more volume than its predecessor.

With the Y9, we have built a yacht that combines both sailing performance and large interior spaces. The Y9 resembles a 100ft ship in terms of speed, interior space and her long, clean look. The owner has a suite with a private saloon and dressing room. A Y9 can also be highly customised in terms of layout. We already have three Y9s under construction and two more orders (as of December 2021).

What was the reception to the Y7 and Tripp 90 (Review, Issue 62) at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival, and how do you believe YYachts is positioned to expand including here in Asia?

We had a very good response in Cannes, which is the most important show for YYachts. We have a good position in the market with our philosophy, our construction and our design. We sell all over the world and Asia is a market that can develop even further.

General description :

The Y7 is Y Yachts best selling model of this contemporary range of performance carbon constructed superyachts (70-100ft). Y Yachts are a luxury technologically advanced brand which was founded by the highly respected Michael Schmidt (formerly founder and owner of Hanse yachts, Germany).

This flush decked sleek hull is powered by an Axxon high modulus carbon mast, carbon furling boom, high performance Doyle sails and a performance Weldox keel. It is no wonder this fast cruising yacht targets the sailing enthusiast who prefers no compromise performance combined with the very best equipment yet simplicity with luxury. Despite being 22m (70ft) in length and with a 212 SqM square top mainsail and 296 SqM Code Zero, the Y7 is very much conceived to be simply operated by the owners. All control lines lead aft to the twin helm stations where the helm can simply sail the yacht by themselves thanks to push button Harken winches. Wide open deck spaces are plentiful on the Y7 and her large lounging cockpit is ideal for al-fresco dining or just for hanging out under the boom bimini. For the owner who would appreciates crewed help onboard there is a dedicated crew cabin with its own private aft deck access. Michael Schmidt is a firm believer in simplicity and ‘no-fuss’ systems that work. As a consequence the Y7’s deck design and sailing systems could not be easier to operate.

Below decks the stylised open plan accommodation is beautifully fitted out with Natural Oak furniture, Oak sole boards and bulkheads. Where possible all furniture and bulkheads are of lightweight foam composite construction. Its no wonder at 30t (lightship) she is fast and rewarding to sail. This Y7 has the most popular three cabin layout plus twin crew cabin. Forward of the large full beam saloon is a U shaped galley to starboard (fully equipped with professional Miele equipment & Grohe Blue Tap) and to port an owners desk/mini office. Forward of the mast is the forward facing master cabin with central king sized bed and ensuite bathroom. Aft of the saloon is the Navigation station with desk and all ships central controls. Either side of the companionway are two twin berthed guest cabins – the starboard cabin having an infill option to create a large double bed. Each aft guest cabin has its own bathroom with shower, basin and electric WC.

There are two large storage lockers onboard. Most impressive of all is the aft deck lazarette which has a 3.2 x 1.8m hydraulic opening deck hatch. This full beam locker is entirely separate from the transom and therefore remains completely dry. This locker will store a 3-4m dinghy (partially deflated), cockpit cushions, fenders, downwind sails, tools, shore power cables and deck furniture etc. The dinghy can be lifted from the lazarette by a dedicated carbon pole lift point which is stored in the end of the boom The other large storage locker is forward at the bow - just behind the dedicated anchor and chain locker.

Uniquely available for sale, this Y7 is in build and available 12 months earlier than if you were to order today. She has an exceptional specification and can be yours for Spring 2025.

Below are the contracted ‘Optional Extras’ ordered for Y7 No.30:

Michael Schmidt has won ocean races, closed big brokerage deals, launched the successful Hanse Yachts brand and now he has created a new range of large yachts as esoteric as they are captivating

Pioneering carbon raceboat builder, international yacht broker, Admiral’s Cup-winning skipper and helmsman, creator of the Hanse Yachts brand and now founding director of the award-winning YYachts shipyard… Michael Schmidt is one of the sailing world’s great all-rounders with several careers’ worth of experience packed into his five decades at the cutting edge of marine industry innovation. But why on earth did he go back to the hard graft of establishing a new shipyard when he could be enjoying a well-earned and comfortable retirement?

‘Well, a few things came together,’ he says. ‘If like me you have sailed all your life, virtually since birth and then built thousands of sailing yachts, you have a certain wealth of experience. You have an idea of how a yacht should sail, what a good interior should look like and how the technology should work. When I had time a few years ago and was looking for a boat for myself, there was nothing that came close to satisfying me. So I started to have a yacht built according to my ideas. Lorenzo Argento and Sir David Chipperfield designed the 80-footer Cool Breeze together with me.’

Schmidt’s vision created a beautiful performance cruiser that turned heads wherever he sailed it. But how did that one-off custom build project escalate into the creation and launch of a whole new shipyard? ‘That came a little later,’ he says. ‘When I sailed Cool Breeze, the yacht attracted quite a lot of attention from owners and interested prospects. So my idea of light, easy-to-sail, reduced and yet luxurious yachts seemed to appeal not only to me. Requests came in for a sister ship and I realized that this was a business. In 2016, I founded YYachts in Greifswald .’

The man behind the brand, Michael Schmidt

The man behind the brand, Michael Schmidt

That core concept, ‘reduced and yet luxurious,’ became the founding principle of the YYachts brand. At a time when most of the marine industry is so strongly focused on doing the exact opposite – adding a luxury dimension to yachting by installing ever more complex and sophisticated systems – what does Schmidt mean by reduced? ‘There is this quote attributed to several famous thinkers: “I’m writing you a long letter because I didn’t have time to write a short one.” A yacht has to be operated intuitively, so you have to rethink and simplify a lot of details, which costs time and energy,’ he explains.

A good example of overcomplicating things, he says, is the current fashion for equipping large yachts’ galleys with induction hobs and electric fan ovens. ‘Why does electric cooking have to be used on a sailing yacht? For that I need either a shore connection or a generator. Why not cook with gas? It’s safe and easy. When the gas bottle is empty, I simply replace it.’

This principle has always been popular among experienced sailors because it boosts the reliability of systems onboard. From backstay deflectors to programmable logic controllers, Schmidt takes a pragmatic and seamanlike approach born out of long experience that favours robust, reliable simplicity over the diminishing returns of adding extra functionality that isn’t strictly necessary. ‘Why do all sails have to be adjustable in so many different ways? If I’m not a racing sailor I don’t need these features which are also quite fragile,’ he says. ‘Why do the electronics have to be completely networked and harbour so many potential sources of error? At YYachts, we asked ourselves these questions and many more. We avoid a high level of complexity and thus vulnerabilities and high maintenance costs. That is what I understand by reduction.’

The coronavirus crisis has severely tested the resilience of many marine businesses but YYachts has thrived despite the constraints and challenges imposed by the pandemic. ‘We are getting a lot of enquiries,’ says chief executive Dirk Zademack. ‘Customers currently seem to be much more interested in owning a home on the water and separating themselves somewhat from the environment. Our philosophy of building light, fast, luxurious and sustainable yachts also strikes a chord with them. It goes hand in hand with the current neo-luxury trend of authenticity and self-determination.’

The cancellation of so many boat shows over the last 18 months has forced a change in YYachts’ sales and marketing strategy. ‘When this opportunity to generate leads was taken away by the pandemic, we focused even more on the digitalisation of our activities,’ Zademack says. ‘We conducted viewings via video call and Facetime, installed a new website with many new features and drew attention to ourselves with other digital activities. That has worked well.’

It was followed by two Y7s and a Trippdesigned 90-footer.

Post Covid, are the boat shows likely to regain the pivotal importance that they used to have for the yachting industry? Schmidt has his doubts. ‘I do believe that boat shows will no longer have the status they had before the pandemic,’ he says. ‘This culture that you must have a stand everywhere will disappear. Perhaps it took this phase to make many people in the industry aware of this.’ Even so, YYachts will still be at a few key events. ‘We will certainly exhibit in Palma and Cannes,’ Zademack says. ‘We are also taking a closer look at the Monaco Yacht Show. At the moment I can’t imagine that we will still be exhibiting at indoor fairs but it’s still a bit early to judge. We’ll just have to observe the overall situation.’

The strong design aesthetic of YYachts is an important aspect of the boats’ appeal. ‘What unites all of our customers is that they are very design-oriented,’ Schmidt says. ‘They like our styling, inside and out. It’s not for nothing that we work with people like Sir David Chipperfield, Lorenzo Argento, Bill Tripp, Javier Jaudenes, Norm Architects or Design Unlimited. We always work directly with the owners themselves. The geographical range is relatively wide, from the USA to Russia. Many enquiries come from Europe, but we are very interested in further expanding our preferred partner network.’YYachts’ smallest model, the Y7, is proving especially popular, which Schmidt says is partly because it can be sailed by just two people and also because it’s been exhibited at so many boat shows and has had more magazine coverage than the other two models. ‘However, the Y8 and the Y9 are also generating a lot of interest,’ he says. ‘With the Y9 we have entered the superyacht segment. It is the ideal size to compete in world class regattas like St Barths Bucket or the Superyacht Cup, but still have a spacious yacht for the family with a small crew.’

The yachtʼs interior design is minimalist and can be customised extensively.

Right from the start, YYachts has been keen to emphasise the sustainability of its yachts, beyond the inherently sustainable nature of sailing. ‘Our concept only begins with that principle,’ Schmidt explains. ‘For example, we cover the deck with wood from sustainable sources, we install vertical windows to minimise the use of air conditioning and we consistently focus on lightweight construction. YYachts are made entirely of carbon, the interior fittings are weight-optimised and they include parts made with material obtained from recycled PET bottles. You will soon see many more ideas on our yachts but in the interest of our customers, we will only implement things we believe in.’

The shipyard has already delivered four yachts this year. First, launched in April, was the Y8 Vegas Baby, a Lorenzo Argento design with interior styling by Design Unlimited. Next were two Y7s, one of which has extensive design input from its owner. ‘Then we handed over our current flagship, a Tripp 90, to its American owner,’ Zademack says. ‘Here we worked with Winch Design on the interior.’ Even larger build projects may soon be in the pipeline. ‘Up to 105ft would be possible,’ Schmidt says. ‘Our competence lies in sailing and with interesting models we believe we can convince many owners of motor boats that sailing is more exciting.’

Covid-19 has not slowed down production. ‘We are very proud that we were able to keep our delivery dates,’ Zademack says. ‘The fact that we rely heavily on regional suppliers is not only sustainable, but also had the positive aspect during the pandemic that our supply chains were hardly interrupted.’

YYachts’ goal is to become a global player in the market for fullcarbon sailing yachts up to 100ft LOA within the next five years. ‘Already in our first five years we have built up a very good image and satisfied our customers,’ Zademack says. ‘We’d like to continue this and convince some motor yacht owners to buy a sailing yacht. We have already succeeded with three of them.’

why should you use an accredited yacht broker to buy a boat?

  • Is the paperwork in order to transfer title securely and legally?
  • Is there outstanding finance, which needs to be settled in order to be able to transfer ownership?
  • Does the boat comply with the regulations in the area of its intended use?
  • What is the VAT status of the boat?

An accredited broker can not only give you confidence in the critical aspects above, but can also offer advice on marine finance, insurance, survey reports, berthing and much more.

As the sums of money involved are often considerable, it is important that the broker has a ring-fenced client account available to hold the funds, whilst the transaction progresses.

If you are looking to buy a boat and would like to chat through the process, please call one of our team.  Yacht broking is our passion and we are very happy to help, even if the boat you have your eye on is not one of our listings.

michael schmidt yacht brokerage

The issue of VAT on yachts can be a complex area. However, there are a few basics that are quite easy to understand without needing a professional accountancy qualification!

The below is not intended as specific tax advice and we always recommend discussing with your broker and, if necessary, your accountant if you are unsure of your current tax position or residency status.

If you are a UK resident and want to own and use a boat within UK waters, then it must be able to demonstrate “UK VAT Paid Status” (often referred to as VPS) – essentially proving that VAT has been paid on that vessel. This is most often demonstrated by an original VAT invoice from a Dealer to the first owner of the Yacht, clearly showing VAT as having been charged at the prevailing rate when the boat was new, but there are other ways to demonstrate a valid VPS.

If either a boat you are selling, or a boat you are looking to buy does not have a valid VPS, then VAT will need to be accounted for at the point of sale. All our boat listings will be either advertised as “Tax Paid” or “Tax Not Paid”, so you are aware from the outset if this should be factored into the offer price.

Our team of ABYA Brokers are all trained to review and assess the VAT paperwork and will be able to explain to you the VAT status of the boat you are looking at. We also have direct relationships with HMRC’s Yacht Team to discuss specific situations.

The recent occurrence of Brexit of the 31st December 2020 has resulted in some changes of how both UK and EU vessels are treated from a VAT perspective, and as part of our brokerage service, we will offer a full review of your VAT documentation to give both the buyer and seller confidence in the VAT status of the vessel.

New customs and VAT changes affecting boat owners from 1st January 2022 have been officially announced by HMRC

HMRC has now confirmed that from the 1st January 2022, boats returning to the UK, which ordinarily qualify for Returns Goods Relief, will not be required to pay a second amount of UK VAT even if their vessel has been outside the UK for more than three years.

Returned Goods Relief: Returned Goods Relief (often called "RGR") was previously in place for qualifying UK VAT Paid Vessels that had exited UK waters and then returned after a period of time. However, there was a statutory three-year time limit, meaning if vessels exceeded the three years, the vessel would effectively lose its UK VAT Paid Status.

From 1st January 2022, legislation has been brought in to give certainty to boat owners that they will not be required to pay a second amount of UK VAT because their vessels have been outside the UK for more than three years. Boat owners returning their vessels to the UK can claim relief from import VAT under the Returned Goods Relief if they meet all the conditions for the relief, regardless of the length of time spent outside of UK waters.

Katherine Green and Sophie Dean, HMRC Directors General, Borders and Trade, said, "We are pleased to be able to provide assurance to the sector that there will be no requirement to pay a second amount of UK VAT if vessels have been outside the UK for more than three years."

It is essential to note the vessel must still qualify under the standard RGR rules – it must have been to the UK at some point under the current ownership, so boats that have left the UK and been sold in the EU or elsewhere will still not qualify. It is also essential to prove evidence of the boat being located in the UK – paperwork such as berthing invoices, electronic data logs or transport invoices will all support a claim for RGR if challenged by HMRC.

Brexit and VAT are reasonably complex subjects, and many different scenarios may impact the ability to claim RGR on a returning vessel. Although we are not tax advisors, and in complex cases, we may recommend you seek professional advice. Please do get in touch if you would like to discuss bringing a boat back to the UK.

what is ce/rcd and does it matter?

As with most products on the market a boat needs to comply with the relevant standards for the area in which it is intended to be used and, as importantly, bought and sold.

All watercraft built since the 16th June 1998 and intended for sport and leisure use may only be placed on the market, or put into service in the UK and EU if it can be demonstrated that it complies with the essential requirements specified in the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD).  This is known as conformity assessment.

Compliance with RCD is normally demonstrated by a CE Certificate and this is now an essential part of the ships papers.  If it is not possible to demonstrate that the boat complies with the RCD it is illegal to offer it for sale in the UK and EU.

As part of the Brexit process, the UK will introduce its own compliance criteria which will be known as UKCA and will take effect from the 1st January 2022.  It is expected that the CE (European) and UKCA requirements will be very closely matched and further details are expected.

As part of the process of assessing a boat for sale, a professional broker will request to see evidence of the RCD compliance proof, along with the ships papers.  Not only does this allow them to legally offer the boat for sale, but also that title can be legally transferred to the new owner when the time comes.

If you have further questions regarding the paperwork required to Sell Your Yacht in the UK/EU please get in touch.

Surveys and sea trials

The main purpose of a survey is to assess whether a boat has any structural defects, which can be caused by grounding, impact or even a manufacturing fault, which comes to light after time on the water. In addition, a surveyor will inspect and test as much of the equipment installed on the boat as possible.  This can include navigation instruments, heating systems, electrical systems (including battery condition), gas system safety, hatch seals and much more.

There will also be aspects that a surveyor is unable to check during a survey, such as detailed rig checks and in-depth engine inspections.  It may in some cases be appropriate to appoint a specialist rigging company to carry out a full rig inspection and a marine engineer to give a full assessment of the engine(s) in order to have the full picture.

In order to carry out a survey the boat will need to be lifted ashore if it is not already out of the water.  Any costs associated with having the survey carried out will fall to the purchaser.  It is worth noting that most marinas will not allow people to climb a rig with the boat ashore, so if you are planning to include a rig inspection, this should be taken into account.

Although it is relatively unusual for a sailing yacht to have a sea trial, it is of particular importance for a motor yacht as the engines are a significant proportion of the value of the craft.  As with a survey, any associated costs such as a skipper and fuel to achieve a sea trial would be a cost borne by the prospective purchaser.

Once you have your written survey report, it is a good opportunity to sit down with the broker to discuss your position.  It is generally considered that all equipment onboard a boat should function as intended and that the cosmetic condition is in line with the age and amount of use the boat has had.

In normal circumstances, it would be reasonable to expect any genuine faults to either be rectified by the vendor, or an appropriate price reduction to accommodate it.

Importantly as you would have stipulated that your offer was subject to a survey (and indeed any other form of inspection), you retain the opportunity to walk away from the purchase  and request that your deposit is returned.  It is however the responsibility of the purchaser to return the boat to both the position and condition in which it was prior to inspection.  As an example, if the boat has been launched for a sea trial it would be necessary to have it lifted back out prior to being released from the agreement.

Due to a conflict of interests, it is not possible for a broker to recommend a surveyor but they will often have a list of surveyors who are accredited by the industry body and specialise in the type of boat being bought.

client accounts

When the sale and purchase of a boat is handled by a Broker, one of their many roles is to safely handle the money side of the deal and ensure funds reach the vendor at the conclusion of the transaction. In return, the buyer can have confidence that in return for parting with their hard-earned funds, they will receive full and clear title to their new boat.

Key to this is the use of a “Client Account” which is a special bank account nominated by the Broker that is ring-fenced from the other normal day-to-day trading bank accounts of the brokerage company. Whilst the broker will control this account, any funds held within this account are not classed as the assets of the brokerage company, and therefore cannot be claimed by any third party in the event of legal or administrative proceedings.

All ABYA Brokers should operate a valid and up-to-date Client Account and will be able to provide a document proving this.

michael schmidt yacht brokerage

When a boat changes hands, the transfer of ownership is processed through a bill of sale, supported by the vessel’s title documentation.  This can vary from country to country but ultimately it is the responsibility of the broker to ensure that sufficient paperwork is available in order to successfully and legally transfer ownership from seller to buyer.

Upon listing a boat for sale the broker should request to see the title documentation in order to be confident that title can legally be transferred, prior to offering it on the open market.

Aside from certain circumstances, the title paperwork will incorporate a Builders Certificate, which is produced by the builder at the point of build completion and is made in favour of the initial purchaser or supplying dealership.

A bill of sale, or in the case of multiple ownerships bills of sale(s) will document the history of ownership and subsequent transfers.  A boat is made up of 64 shares and it is important that all shares can be transferred on completion of the sale.

The VAT status of the boat should be ascertained as this can have an impact on the value of the boat to the tune of the VAT level in the country it is being sold. The physical location that a boat is being sold can also impact the VAT status, which is something a professional broker can offer an insight to.

The boat's compliance to various standards is also a key aspect as it can only be legally sold if it adheres to the standards required in the area it is intended to be used.  In Europe, this is the CE/RCD and a boat must have proof of compliance and therefore the CE/RCD certificate is a key part of the title documentation.

If you are looking to Sell Your Boat and you would like us to look through the paperwork you have available, we would be very happy to do so.

Icon-Insurance

Once you have a completion date set for the purchase of your new boat, it is essential to have the appropriate insurance cover in place.  Most insurance cover will start and end at midnight and therefore should come into effect on the appropriate day.  Your yacht broker should check with you that you have this in place prior to completing the sale, so that the cover is seamless.

As with all insurance cover, it is well worth taking the time to ensure the cover, not only includes the sea area you plan to sail in and the mooring type you intend to have, but also how other aspects such as longer “out of normal area” trips, road transportation, ashore storage and any specific exclusions such as racing are viewed.

Insurers will each specialise in different aspects of cover and therefore it is sensible to discuss your cover with an experienced broker, who can work with a panel of insurers to offer you the best solution for your type of boat and planned sailing.

Broadly speaking a UK based boat will have an annual premium in the region of 0.5% of the current boat value and nearer 0.75% for boats in the Mediterranean.  Specific inclusions such as delivery trips, racing, out of area sailing and winter Biscay crossings will often be charged as an additional cost to the standard cover as they may be required in one year and not the next.

If you would like to be pointed in the right direction for a suitable insurance broker, please get in touch .

michael schmidt yacht brokerage

marine finance

Marine mortgages or boat loans are available from a variety of different lenders who specialise in the marine market.  The boat generally becomes the collateral for the loan and in most cases the lender will require a lien to be taken out over the boat to register their financial interest until it is settled.

In general the maximum term for the loan is 15 years and usually with a minimum deposit of 30%.  The age of the boat is relevant as most lenders will have a maximum age that the boat should not have exceeded at the end of the loan term.  This is particularly relevant if you are looking to buy an older boat.

Most marine mortgages offer an appealing level of flexibility allowing over payments and complete early re-payment without incurring penalties.  This can be of particular benefit if a lump of money is due in the future and the loan can help to get you on the water sooner.

When you are buying a boat, the broker will endeavour to ascertain whether a boat has any outstanding finance and would settle this from the sale proceeds to ensure the boat is unencumbered when ownership transfers to the new owner.

If you would like further information, or have any questions regarding boat finance, please get in touch.

why should you use an accredited yacht broker to sell your boat?

As a seller, the work of a Yacht Broker can be of even greater benefit by helping you to achieve the best market value, transfer ownership legally and securely and the protection of a secure client account service.

Initially, the work starts with a full market appraisal.  Ideally, you would find a Boat Broker who has recently sold a boat of the same age and model, as this is the most up to date real-world information available. Most professional Yacht Brokers will have access to a worldwide database of recent sale information in order to be able to give you an in-depth insight into the current market.

There are numerous Boat Selling Websites where a Boat Broker should list your boat for sale to reach the maximum number of potential buyers, as you would expect this is a critical aspect to achieve the highest sale price and these Yacht Selling Websites are only available to professional Yacht Brokers.

Once a potential buyer is found, it is the job of the Boat Broker to guide them through the process of viewing, survey, VAT & RCD status, title paperwork and ultimately completion.  There are plenty of opportunities for a potential buyer to fall by the wayside and it is often the experience and reassurance offered by a professional Yacht Broker, which gives the buyer the confidence to complete the purchase.

If you have a Boat To Sell and would like to discuss the process, we would be more than happy to chat it through with you.

michael schmidt yacht brokerage

In general, there are not enough boats bought and sold in order to be able to gather the kind of data available to offer the accuracy the car industry can.  Having said that, a professional broker who is immersed in boat sales on a daily basis can offer a fairly accurate market appraisal.

Ideally, if a broker has sold a boat of the same make and model recently, they will be able to offer some up to date information, which is invaluable.  They may well also have potential buyers, who missed out on the one sold recently.

A professional broker also has access to a database of worldwide sales records, which details the recorded sale prices, length of time to sell and the difference between the initial asking price and ultimate sale price, amongst other useful information.  This will allow a fairly accurate market appraisal to be achieved.

Naturally specification, engine hours and condition will have an impact on the market value, which will all be taken into consideration.

As with a property sale, the presentation of the boat is key to achieving the very best sale price.  It is often very well worthwhile investing some money at the point of listing, in order to achieve considerably more at the eventual sale price.
