Some small, single-person boats can keep an angler on the water all day on just 1-2 gallons of gas or less. Small rental fishing boats may have a 5-gallon tank which is more than enough for them, while the same amount of gas in a boat meant for towing waterskiers or tubes will burn that gas much faster.
Estimate your fuel cost ahead of time by making sure that you are familiar with the consumption rate of your boat. A trailer is going to be required to transport the sailboat from one point to another, and the truck or car that you are going to use to transport it must also have a tow package in order to tow it. However, this is optional as a sailboat can be stored at a marina year around if the weather permits. Annual storage, depending on the marina, can be close to $2,000 per year.

However, what you'll actually pay really depends on the type of boat you have and what you do with it. Not all maintenance is as important. If you're on a budget, you can maintain your boat reasonably well for just $1,000 / year. I'll explain how below.

Let's start by getting a good overview of the different maintenance costs. Here's a full overview of all the recurring maintenance from most to least frequent. I'll explain each line item in detail later on.

Most people starting out will get a smaller size boat and use it for day trips and weekend trips. These boats have less moving parts and less critical parts. It will be important to maintain a couple of parts, though:

What would be the maintenance cost if you were on a tight budget? Well, for starters, I'd recommend doing most small maintenance yourself and ignore all non-essential. On sailboats, however, there aren't a lot of non-essential parts. But here are some things we could do out to save some big bucks:
Winterizing your boat yourself can cost you as little as $50 for antifreeze and an oil change afterward.
The total maintenance cost on a tight budget can get as low as $275 per year, or $23 per month.

Liveaboards that don't really sail that much have less maintenance to do in one way, and more in another. The sails, rigging, and engine will be less critical if you won't take her out very often. Also, you'll have plenty of time doing odd jobs yourself, since you'll be living on the boat. On the other hand, it will be very important to maintain hull health, as even small leaks will lead to condensation and mold, which is horrible for your health and living standard.
Replacing electronics won't be very important - however, your batteries will need to be replaced more often.

If you own a bluewater cruiser, your maintenance cost will go up a lot. Saltwater is a lot more corrosive, and the stress on your rigging and sails will be higher. Sun wear and constant use will wear down the sails and rigging even more. Your engine will wear out faster, and you'll need more incidental repairs as well.
The interval of longterm maintenance will increase dramatically in these conditions.
On top of that, maintaining your boat properly is critical. In marine environments, everything can go wrong exactly one time for it to be critical.
You want a reliable boat, which means you'll fix anything that needs fixing immediately.
Your sail area will most likely also be larger, which means your sail replacement will be more expensive.
One advantage is that you might not need to winterize if you're a fulltime cruiser since you'll probably spend your winters in Bermuda.

Let's go over each type and break down which costs to expect exactly.
Winterization is an often-overlooked cost, but it can be one of the largest expenses each year. If you're like me, and not so lucky to live in Florida, you need to winterize your boat.
Failing to winterize it will increase your maintenance cost over time, as the engine wears out more quickly, and your plumbing and equipment will fall apart. Winter storms and ice can damage the hull and mast as well. Learn all about the dangers of failing to winterize here .

For dry storage, part of the process can be to shrink wrap your boat. Now, this is expensive, and it is hard on the environment. Some boaters don't shrink wrap in the winter because of it.
Here's the average cost to shrink wrap a boat
Your boat will need bottom paint roughly every 2 years (could be longer, but to be safe, let's keep it at two). It's also called antifouling paint because it helps to protect your hull from weeds, barnacles, and so on. Barnacles can slice through your boat's bellow! So you don't want them on there.
On average, it costs about $15 to $20 per foot to get your sailboat hull painted professionally.
For a 26' sailboat, that's just 500 bucks. Money well spent.

Batteries have a limited number of charge cycles. Deep cycle batteries (which are best for household functionality) need replacing every 4-6 years and will cost roughly $600. If you use your batteries extensively, they will most likely need replacing after 3-4 years, for example, for liveaboards or full-time cruisers.
Good quality cruising sails will need to be replaced every 10 years or so.

Most people that own a sailboat will have to replace the sails and rigging at least once in their lifetime. Replacing the mast is uncommon, but if you're unlucky and get demasted, it will need to be fixed. So I've added it to the "be aware this might happen" list - but won't add it to the monthly recurring costs.

If you need to replace the mast and boom, prepare to spend anywhere between $15,000 - $25,000.
The cost of replacing the standing rigging is, on average, $4,000 every 10 years.
The running rigging consists of all the lines, sheets, and so on that is used to haul and operate the sails. It wears with time due to UV exposure, flogging, strain from the wind, and regular use. In most cases, you'll only have to replace your running rigging every 5-10 years, but it will cost you $5,000 on average.
Deck hardware consists of the bullseyes, tiller , eye straps, cleats , and so on. All this small hardware needs to be replaced every 20-30 years and will amount to about $1,500.
Gas engines run for about 1,500 hours, diesel engines run for 5,000. After that, you'll need to change them out.
Most engines will last you about 20 years, depending on the amount of use and whether you use it properly. Gas engine will last a lot less long than diesels.
A standard 15HP or 20HP outboard gas engine will cost you about $5,000 - $6,000 and needs replacing every 20 years or so. If you do the work yourself, it's more something like $1,000 - $1,500.

The installation of the engine will cost a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars. With inboard engines, this is not something you can easily do yourself - it isn't just unscrewing a motor and screwing a new one in.
The deciding factor of how much will this cost exactly is whether you can simply bolt the new engine in or whether you have to adjust all other parts, including shaft logs, exhausts, electrics, and so on.
Of course, if you have an outboard engine the installation price will be nothing more than a few drops of sweat, swearing, and back pain for a day or two.

Most people need 2 risers + 2 exhaust manifolds. Parts total: $600 on average That's just what it is. Where you can really save some money, is on the labor. Labor total: $1,000 on average It's about a days worth of work. A professional needs roughly 8 hours to get the job done.

Inboard engine (and generator) starters cost from $40 - over $1,000 depending on the engine. Outboard starters run from about $100 - $500. Skilled marine technicians charge from $75 - $150 per hour. Your costs will range from a couple of hundred dollars for a small outboard up to over a thousand for a large or difficult to reach inboard.
That's a broad range, but if you know what you need for your boat, then you can get a better idea of the cost. The final price depends on two things - what type of engine you have, and how hard it is to get to the starter.

USCG safety regulations require you to replace safety gear regularly.
Adhering to the minimum safety requirements shouldn't cost you more than 150 - 250 dollars every 5 years. But if you want the good stuff, need more fire extinguishers, plan on spending more like $600. If you want a life raft, that's another $1,500.
To avoid you have to go cheap on your safety gear, I've put it in the budget for $500.

How much do big sailboats really cost?
60-feet is a good point at which to consider sailboats as being “big.” Luxury 60-footers, like the Bordeaux 60, will usually start at a price of a little less than $1 million and go up rapidly from there. A used boat in that range might be had for as low as $.5 million.

This is an exclusive and competitive market; only about 120 60+ ft boats are sold new each year:
This boat, built by CNB Yacht Builders, was first launched in 2008.
It quickly gained fame for being one of the first boats to bring the luxurious characteristics to the production market in a 60-foot package.
Though a production boat, each one is built to be semi-custom with owner input. According to their website, it is the smallest of the CNB boats, and fifty have been built so far.
The price of a new one is not advertised, and they are sold exclusively through the boat builders, but over a dozen can be found for sale online, at prices ranging from a low of $550,000 for a 2009 model to $880,000 for a 2013 model.
Most of these are in Europe, so these prices have been converted from Euros.
The options on the boat will affect the price as much as the year will (some models for sale had an inner headstay, for example, and there are other options on the rigging and the interior).
This was the first wave of new Beneteau luxury yachts, with interiors designed in collaboration with a motorboat designer. It debuted in 2016.
Ease of sailing was balanced with performance, and several video reviews speak to the elegance and innovation of the yacht.
Indicative of how competitive the large, luxury sailing yacht market was in that year, the base price started at €650,000, or about $770,500.
Most cost more with options, and the price has increased markedly since then. Currently, on their webpage for the yacht, Beneteau advertises a starting price of $1,190,400.
Used prices vary, but an online search found prices from a low of $977,000 up to $1,275,000.
Designed by Philippe Briand (who designed the Bordeaux 60) and Andrew Winch, the Jeanneau 64 made her debut in 2014.
This was one of the first designs to marry the uniqueness of the luxury yacht with the functionality and competitive pricing of a production boat.
The massive cockpit and walk-in engine room are two prominent design features of the boat. Beautiful wood interiors and leather fittings highlight the luxurious interior. As indicated by an early test crew being caught for two days in gale-force winds, the performance is strong.
The early models started at under €900,000; currently, the base price for a new Jeanneau 64 is $1,279,800, but options usually take it a bit higher.
A search of used prices shows a low of $890,000 and a high of $1,305,000.

The Danish-designed X6.5 is a 66-foot luxury racer/cruiser, with the hull built in Poland and the boat completed in Denmark.
Everything is built from high-tech materials for maximum strength and lowest weight. It is an upgrade of their X6 model.
There is a high degree of customization on the interiors, such as the owner’s berth, galley design, and forward berths. They have been broken down into modules and are available in several combinations.
Weight saved in rigging and hull construction has been utilized by larger water and fuel tanks for longer-range cruising, larger battery banks, and space for options such as dive compressors.
All sail controls are push-button from the cockpit, and lines are led through spars and under the deck to limit exposure. The main sheets to an arch and is furled into the boom.
The X6.5 was first introduced in 2017, and the base cost then was €2.5 million, though options took some of the early models (including Hull Number 1) to over 3 million. A few used models can be found online, but the price is not advertised.
The contest is an established Dutch builder, having been in business for over 60 years.
They have made a variety of sailboats, from dinghies to trawlers. The 67CS is their initial entry to the luxury racer/cruiser market, designed in collaboration with a German firm.
It is designed for ease of handling with a smaller crew. The exterior features clean lines and an open design, with rig options such as in-mast or in-boom furling. The interior has several layouts offered for customization, as well.
Several designers were brought in to make it as elegant as possible, including a vibration expert to reduce the noise from the engine. The interior is mostly a beautifully-finished wood.
In 2019 the base price for a new 67CS was €2.6 million, and it is likely higher now. No models were available used in an online search.
The Oyster 745 is a long-range cruising yacht.
The Oyster 745 is designed to travel to the most remote corners of the Earth in mind. At this size, however, unlike the models we have looked at, the Oyster 745 is intended to have a dedicated crew.
She has twin rudders, two protected helm stations, an ample but easy-to-handle sail plan, and a clean layout above deck with flush hatches and concealed lines.
The interior is spacious, with four cabins for the owner and guests (beyond crew quarters) and a large saloon. The boat is air-conditioned, and there are large storage tanks for water and gas.
There are numerous windows in the hull to give a complete view of the seascape around the boat.
The Oyster 745 was introduced in 2016, and the price tag then was over $4,000,000. A handful of the boats are listed for sale online, but none of the ads disclose the asking price. One was listed as having sold for €3,5000,000.
Swan is a Finnish boat manufacturer, originally partnered with famed designer Sparkman & Stephens.
They have had various designers in the last half-century, but they have always been known for sleek, durable performance sailing vessels. Currently, they have 13 production models ranging from 36 to 125 feet.
The Swan 78 is the largest production model before they get into their MaxiSwan line, and German Frers design it. There are options in the rigging (such as the square-topped main), and the deck has distinctive Swan lines and abundant teak planking.
The interior is designed by Heini Gustafsson and comes in two designs, either owner-forward or owner-aft. Three guest cabins and a salon, and the standard Swan wood interiors round it out.
The cost for a Swan 78 is €5 million; a half-dozen have been built so far.
While we are talking about Swans, let’s look at the 115.
The Swan 115 is a performance yacht with a displacement of 94 tons, with an adjustable keel that makes the draft 6 to 11 feet.
There are three staterooms and crew quarters (the crew consists of the Captain, the chef, and three sailors).
The exact price was not disclosed, but it is in the neighborhood of $20,000,000 – and this is in addition to the estimated $6,000 annual operating costs.
This is one of the most iconic superyachts globally, with her three distinctively designed, rotating masts.
She is a steel boat 88 meters in length, or 288 feet, and was launched in 2006.
She cruises at 16 knots and is capable of speeds over 24 knots. Beyond the luxury of the boat itself, with extensive carbon, aluminum, walnut, and ebony, she has an outdoor cinema that projects onto the lowest sail of the foremast.
Her 19 crew live in 8 cabins, while she can take up to 12 guests in four massive staterooms.
The original owner, Tom Perkins, did not disclose the cost of the yacht but said that it was between $150 million and $300 million when launched in 2006.
The boat is currently available for charters, starting at $480,000.
In truth, this boat may not qualify for this list, as it is technically classified as a sail-assisted motor yacht.
Its massive engine with twin propellers drives it, and the sails assist in its drive rather than being the primary source of power.
It was built by the German builder Nobiskrug in Kiel and completed in 2017. Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko owns it.
The boat’s design is simply unique and unlike anything ever put on the water before, with her distinctive stepped-level stern and sloping forward decks. She has a gross tonnage of 12,600 and has three massive masts. She is 142 meters long.
Most of the characteristics of the yacht, such as the interior, as shrouded in secrecy – a fact the builder plays up on their website.
The estimated cost of building this superyacht is $800 million.
We have started with 60-foot luxury sailboats at a hefty price tag and gone up from there fairly rapidly!
So, are there any big, 60-foot sailboats that are a bit more affordable?
Yes! We have focused on newer boats, but older, solidly-built sailboats in that size range are cheaper. However, keep in mind that the 60-foot pleasure boat as a semi-standard production is a more modern concept; most older boats in that range were made for individuals and in very low numbers.
Here’s just a few of them:
This schooner-rigged boat, sometimes just referred to as the Ocean 60, was made by legendary British manufacturer Southern Ocean Shipyards between 1980 and 1982.
There were at least three different interior layouts, but the boat was made for durability rather than comfort.
The boat was well-known in the 1980s for its serious passage-making ability and dependability. Many made the Atlantic crossing multiple times.
Several used Ocean 60s can be found online, starting with an asking price of $220,000 and going up to around $400,000.
Hinckleys are some of the nicest sailboats ever built. Hinckleys are famous for their classic lines and woodwork, as well as their sailing characteristics.
They were one of the original American luxury lines.
The Sou’Wester 59 was first built in 1982, was designed by the naval architect firm McCurdy & Rhoades. They were masthead sloop rigs and among the largest of the boats that they built. Interestingly, there were two ketch-rigged 59s built.
Most of them are kept in outstanding condition by their owners, as the quality of the boat demands it. You can find some used for a low of about $350,000, but most will be $450,000 and above.

C&C was a classic Canadian manufacturer. The 61s were all made for particular individuals; 7 or 9 were made in total between 1970 and 1975, and 1 to 3 was ketch-rigged, with the rest being sloops.
Given their scarcity, all models are fairly well-known, including the first, which was named Sorcery.
We’re listing it here as representing many of the 60-footers made in the 1960s-1980s, many models numbering in single digits.
Despite their scarcity, they occasionally come to the market. One is currently for sale in Turkey for $115,000; this may be the original Sorcery.
This is a Sparkman and Stephens design, built by Spanish manufacturer North Wind. These are not so old; the first ones were built in 2005.
They show characteristics of more modern luxury and the classic lines and sailing characteristics of traditional Sparkman and Stevens work. It is a fast but manageable cutter-rigged boat.
It lacks the push-button ease of the most modern boats, but it is still designed to be handled by a short-handed crew.
Most used models are in Europe and can be had for around €420,000.
The Little Harbor 75 is an older model designed by Ted Hood. Hood was an inventive sailor and started his own sailmaking business in the 1950s. By the 1970s, he was building his own boats.
He started his Little Harbor line of sailboats in Taiwan, and by the 1980s, they were known as some of the highest quality boats in the world. When boat sales dropped in the late 1980s, he moved and consolidated all of his businesses and boatyards at Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Hood sold Little Harbor Boats in 1989.
The Little Harbor 75 was the largest sailboat that his company built as a production model (though a handful of 78-footers built) and set the standard for luxury that was unequaled for decades. They were made from 1980 to 1989.
It was among the first boats to employ push-button furling for the genoa. The interior was massive with multiple staterooms and a large galley, and a walk-around engine room. They were unique boats, and even today, there is little data online.
There are a few Little Harbor 75’s available used. In Europe, they go for as little as €400,000. In the USA, the cheapest one is advertised at $750,000, and the upper range is about $1,700,00.
Big sailboats are expensive. Beyond their initial price, the cost of upkeep can be extraordinary, as well.
There are many more models that we did not get to here, like the Hylas 60, the Hallberg Rassy 64, and the Euphoria 68, but these are a strong representation of the cost you are looking at.
If you are looking at getting a new sailboat in that range, you’ll need about a million dollars to start looking.
A used boat in that range might start at a quarter of that. But be prepared for more maintenance costs!

Your guide to fun on the water!
Are you a new boat owner, or plan to be one soon? If yes, then great! First things first though, there will be some significant boat ownership costs involved and you’ll need to know what to expect. Not to freak you out, but the last thing you want is for you to be that guy who leaves his boat docked for months on end just wearing away because you didn’t anticipate the ongoing costs of owning and operating your boat.
So, how much does owning a boat really cost?
You can expect that a $20,000 boat will cost between $2,656 – $3,000 dollars a year or more in ongoing expenses. These boat ownership costs include maintenance, insurance, registration fees, docking fees, and gear necessary for the operation and safety of the vessel and its passengers.
Anticipating boat costs is a smart way to avoid a sinking debt driven ship (pun intended!). Do not become boat poor. It’s not a good look.
This article will provide information about boating expenses and the so-called hidden costs of boat ownership. It tries to assist mainly first-time buyers in preparing for and reducing financial burdens where possible.
The average age of boat owners is 60 for sailors and slightly younger (55) for power boaters. Younger boat users haven’t always been keen on buying, and this is something organizations such as the National Marine Manufacturers Organization ( NMMA ) are working desperately to change.
But not many organizations are successfully promoting recreational boating, especially in this economy, and the boating lifestyle still appears out of reach for many people. But is boating that expensive, or is it just our perception of it?
Discover Boating published their findings from a recent study where they indicated that first-time buyers had significant concerns over what they called “hidden boating fees,” which tend to show up right at the end of the purchasing process. It shows how seriously the industry needs to take the issue of transparency.

Here’s some straight talk about the expenses you can expect to pay for once you purchase a boat. Later we’ll see how these expenses compare between a sailboat and a motorboat.
On average, a mid-sized boat measuring around 25ft in length will set you back about $40,000. Of course, you could compromise a little on the size or go for a used boat, and in that case, the purchase price reduces significantly. Check out Bloomberg or NadaGuides to get a clear picture of how these boats are priced.
So for our example, let’s set the buying price at a lower range of $20,000. That way we can base our expenses off this initial purchase price, and it will make it easier for you to calculate your expenses if your boat costs more or less than this amount.
Most insurers will offer boat insurance at the rate of 1.5 – 2.0% of the boat’s value (also known as hull value) per year. So if your ship is valued at $20,000, then insurance would be around $400 a year on the higher side. Remember that insurance rates differ based on location, so prices will typically be higher in hurricane-prone regions for instance.
Insurance prices also vary greatly depending on whose operating the boat, whether you are occasionally using it for fishing or if you’re a regular water skier / wakeborder. Boating insurance also has a direct correlation with your driving record. Better drivers get better boat insurance rates.
Average Annual Insurance Cost: $400
Your boat requires registration, much like any other vehicle. The boat registration process is managed at the state level so expect some variations in cost. We’ll set the average registration cost at $225 per year.
Licensing for the Boating Safety Education Certificate may also apply here. Still, the good news is once you get certified, which can cost anywhere from $150 to $300, it’s good for life (but again, check state licensing rules to be sure).
This certificate licenses you to operate a personal watercraft (PWC), powered by a 25hp motor or higher. The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators ( NASBLA ) is an excellent place to find more information.
Average Registration Cost: $225
Some states like Florida and California require a personal property boat tax. This tax is different from sales tax or use tax. Boat property taxes (if any) vary wildly depending on the state and county you live.
You’ll need to check with your local county offices to see if this tax will apply to you or not. If it does, your boat’s value will be assessed as tangible property (just like a house) and you will pay annual property taxes on the assessed value.
Taxes Cost: Varies
Mooring costs fluctuate fundamentally based on geographic location, the size of your boat, specialized boat care, proximity to restaurants and other facilities, etc. If you want a premium marina with round the clock security and incredible scenery, then you’re going to pay something in the range of $1,000 to $2,000 annually for a larger boat.
But you don’t always have to pay for a mooring: A decent boat yard can serve as a mooring for your boat when you’re not sailing, and they only charge a flat seasonal fee. Alternatively, if your boat is smaller, you may just store it on its trailer at home for free in between outings.
Mooring Cost: Varies
If you pay for mooring, you will potentially need to purchase a smaller boat for traveling to and from your primary vessel. Small rowboats cost about $1,000, and you can always go for a used one for half the price or find a far cheaper option online. Cheaper ones will be visibly old, but they get the job done.
Row Boat Cost: $500 to $1,000
If you live in colder climates, there will be an annual cost of about $1000 – $2,000 for winter boat storage, which involves someone hauling your boat and placing it on a set of blocks. The charge covers this service plus a cover wrapping that is thrown over the boat all winter.
Again the other alternative here is to move your boat to your property, assuming there’s plenty of space in your driveway or backyard.
Storage Cost: $1,500
Trailers vary in price based on their size and material, so if you’re buying an aluminum trailer for a 20-foot boat, it may set you back anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000, with cheaper options online in the used section. There is also a DMV registration fee for boat trailers, which costs around $5 (may vary in your area).
Aluminum trailers are the preferred choice for their lighter weight and the fact that they don’t wear from rust and or break easily. However, there are other models made from steel or iron that will serve the purpose. They weigh more but are generally more affordable.
Trailer Cost: $1,000
Most most routine maintenance estimates are around 10% of the boat value annually. So basically, the more expensive your boat, the more money it will cost to maintain. Maintenance typically involves servicing the engine, anti-fouling, sail and rig, electrical equipment, upholstery, repainting the hull, fixing hull damage, upgrades, replacements, and so on. Some owners carry out the essential maintenance themselves, but they always set aside a budget for professional maintenance.

There will be the added cost of gas, oil changes, and regular engine maintenance for anybody using a motorboat. More significant engines like 4-stroke motors will use up more gas, and also the number of times you take your boat out will determine the cost of gas.

The following is a list of 15 crucial boating accessories that you must purchase and renew to stay safe out on the water. We haven’t included the cost for each item; however, it is worth pointing out that these items don’t come with the boat and require additional spending.
You must be able to treat minor injuries or ailments, and this is possible with a range of neat medical kits that can cost as little as $10 or as much as $1,000. It depends on what medical emergencies you’re planning for or how far you plan to cruise. Here’s an inexpensive first aid kit (Amazon) that’s got everything you’ll need.
First-timers may find that motion sickness is pretty strong, and in that case, it helps to have devices or treatments that prevent or help manage it. Motion sickness strips and unique wrist bands are everyday items used for motion sickness.
A depth finder from companies like Hummingbird or Faria Beede will tell you how deep the water is so that you never run the risk of damaging your hull or, worse, getting stuck somewhere out in the water. Portable ones like the Garmin Striker Plus 4 (Amazon) are cheaper and will give you the same readouts, so there are different options here.
A single, quality life jacket will often cost you over $50, and you need to have at least one life jacket for every person aboard. The Stearns Classic Series Vest (Amazon) will provide the right protection and save you some money in the process.
The life jacket should also have a whistle installed if it doesn’t come with one. The Fox 40 whistle comes with a break away lanyard and will get the job done. It is also wise to have a small flare and pockets to store any relevant survival item in your life jacket or vest.
The cost of the life vests alone can set you back several hundred dollars in order to outfit your boat safely to carry several people.
These are particularly useful for people with smaller boats that can dock anywhere. A beach anchor will stake into different types of ground so that your ship doesn’t slowly drift away. Where there’s firm ground, you can hammer one of those spike varieties into the ground. The Slide Anchor Spike (Amazon) works well in shallow water or on the shore.
You must have several of these and have them packed with spare tools, GPS, smartphones, and other electronics that may be useful. Ensure that your storage boxes can float, and don’t load too much equipment into a single box. Spread out your gear among several of them, some carrying the same or similar equipment.
Solar-powered chargers are considered essential for larger boats. Ideally, your boat should have available USB sockets attached to solar panels; but if this isn’t the case, portable solar panels also have power ports that you can use. Plus portable panels like this one at Amazon can also be used for camping or RVing.
When taking the boat out to sea or on a large lake when you are likely to cruise away from familiar routes, navigation equipment is needed. A simple marine GPS (Amazon) will suffice; however, for the more complex and sensitive GPS equipment, expect to spend thousands of dollars.
It’s hard to estimate because, ultimately, the total cost fluctuates with brand and quantity, but at the very least, you should expect to end up spending at least another $1,000 on some essential items for your boat. Many of these items once purchased don’t require replacement, so that’s a relief.

This is a rough outline of costs, and the intent is to give you an idea of where the money goes . Your costs may be higher or lower depending on if you have a boat loan and many other factors, but this should give you a good starting place for determining just how much a boat is going to cost to own and operate based on a $20,000 purchase price.
The first year of boat ownership will invariably cost more as you have to purchase a whole range of safety equipment – some of which you probably won’t use, but it’s always a good idea to have available.
If you remove all of the one-time costs, you can expect your ongoing cost for owning the boat in this example to be around $2,625 annually if you don’t require long-term mooring or winter storage fees. Adding the cost of fuel and boat launch fees, it’s probably safe to say you’re looking around $3,000 or more in annual expenses.

As you can see, there is not much difference in ongoing costs. While the motor boat has more engine maintenance costs, the sailboat has more costs associated with the sails and rigging.

Sailboats can also be transported across an ocean on their own with the help of a hired captain and crew. Costs vary widely based on size and type, and they range from $200 to more than $15,000.

Dry weight is distinct from displacement, so it’s important to ensure that you have the correct number. Here are the most common ways to transport sailboats short and long distances.
Some sailboats can be towed, though the vehicle, trailer type, and license requirements vary based on size. The smallest and lightest dinghies and pocket cruisers can be towed by most typical cars, provided you have a heavy-duty tow hitch installed.
Larger sailboats, in the 20-foot range and longer, usually need to be towed by a pickup truck or SUV. A half-ton gasoline pickup truck is sufficient for lighter vessels, as long as the dry weight doesn’t exceed the vehicle’s towing capacity.
Also, remember that some automakers determine towing capacity under ideal test conditions, so your truck’s actual towing ability may be slightly lower than its rating.
You’ll have to collapse or remove the mast, boom, and standing rigging of the sailboat and secure it, regardless of its size.
Most trailer sailers can be towed by half-ton or 3/4 ton single rear wheel trucks. Larger sailboats, such as towable coastal cruisers, may require a multi-axle trailer and a gooseneck. This setup is often found with a dually 3/4 ton or 1-ton truck.
The rules of the road are clear when it comes to towing. With a Class C license (a standard driver’s license), the maximum overall trailer length you can tow is 60 feet. The maximum length of a Class C trailer surface is 53 feet.
Length usually isn’t the issue when it comes to towing sailboats. The maximum width of a class C trailer is 8 ft 6 in, which includes the items on the trailer. The regulations mean that the beam of your boat can’t exceed about 8 feet, give or take a couple of inches.
With a more advanced license or a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you can tow a much larger trailer and drive a semi-truck. Some larger sailboats with greater beam width can be towed this way, though only if they remain below the maximum height.
Height requirements for trailers vary between 13 ft, 6 inches to 14 ft, depending on the location. This is measured from the ground to the top of the item on the trailer.
Be sure to plan your route carefully if you’re towing a boat with a full keel, as some older overpasses and railroad bridges are much shorter than 13 feet.
It’s usually best to leave the towing to professionals, especially if you’re towing a large boat. Experienced drivers with big rigs and commercial licenses can transport surprisingly large vessels safely but at a cost. The benefit of using a professional service is that you’re taking the risk off your shoulders.
Many professional towing services offer insurance, which is essential. Insurance protects the loading and unloading of the boat and covers any damages that occur en route. For the price, it’s a no-brainer.

Hired crew delivery costs vary, though the more hands you need, the more it costs. Crews and captains usually charge daily rates for yacht delivery services. A fast sailboat is almost always cheaper to transport than a slow sailboat.
As an example, we’ll use the services of Captain James Lowe , who is a USCG licensed 200-ton Master. As of the writing of this article, Captain James Lowe charges between $350 and $425 per day for his services, depending on the size of the vessel. Deckhands cost $175 per day per person, which is in addition to the Captain’s charges.
These are the base rates, and they’re a good representation of what professional crewed delivery costs. You may find cheaper rates with other groups or individuals, but it’s worth the cost if you want a trustworthy and experienced crew.
Additional charges often include transportation costs (to and from the destinations), fuel costs (for heating, cooking, and motoring), and a deposit is usually required for fuel. Sailboats, like all other vehicles, have their own set of maintenance and upkeep costs. Nowadays, you can get a decent used sailboat for a few thousand dollars in the used sailboat market. While it may appear enticing at first, keep in mind that owning a sailboat isn’t only about the first purchase you’ll make. There are more things that come after it, like mooring, insurance, and maintenance. Fortunately, sailboat maintenance is less expensive than maintaining a powerboat. Also, keep in mind that owning a sailboat means consuming less fuel. So, in this article, I’m going to explain in detail the cost of maintenance for sailboats. And, once you’ve calculated the true cost of ownership then you can make the right decision and be accurate in your calculations. So, keep reading!
So, owning a sailboat entails some costs. There are one-time costs and also recurring costs. One-time costs include taxes, registration, sailing club fee (optional), and storage/trailer fees. Recurring costs include maintenance, mooring, insurance, safety equipment, fuel, winterizing, and international license for sailing in international waters. Let’s see all these costs below in detail:
Bear in mind that the cost of registering a boat varies greatly from state to state, depending on factors such as boat type, length, and hull material. For instance, a 30-foot fiberglass sailboat would cost $135.00 per year in North Carolina or Virginia, whereas a similar-aged wooden sailboat would only cost $33.75. So, let’s say that the annual registration fee for a 30-foot sailboat is $135.0. The entire first-time registration cost is $604, with a 6.25 percent tax on the $7,500 purchase price rounding up to $469 .
The fee of registration rises with the length of time it is held, and some states mandate bi-annual renewal. Note that if you’re registering a boat for the first time, you’ll also have to pay taxes, which range from 4 to 10% of the purchase price. A medium-sized sailboat’s registration fees are unlikely to exceed a couple of hundred dollars in most states. Even so, it’s still necessary to calculate this before making your purchase. So, when determining the cost, keep in mind the hull material, length, and displacement of your boat.
Generally, the cost of registration and taxes will most likely be between $150 and $200 every year. You’ll have to pay taxes on the boat when you acquire it, which might be a hefty upfront expenditure. When you buy and register your boat, you’ll have to pay taxes ranging from 4% to 10% of the purchase price, depending on where you live.
