- Transpac 51 – An interesting but successful and fast year
The Thirtieth Honolulu Race set several new records, though not including speed! It had the largest fleet, probably the finest fleet, and the largest foreign entry list.
The start, west of Point Fermin, was in little wind, which quickly turned to a fresh northwest breeze and by morning roll call from uss PRAIRIE, record first-day runs were posted; some over 200 miles. Considering that the first day is only 19 hours, that’s a record. Two boats, NIAD and TAHUNA dropped out off of Catalina with rigging failures.
After three fast days, the high expanded over the rhumb line and our fleet ground to a halt. some of the fleet gambled and sailed into the high where they spent some wearisome days. A few fell off to the south and caught wind.
First-to-finish was DRIFTER, skippered by Harry C. Moloscho with an elapsed time of 11 days, 18 hrs., 1 min. and 4 sec.
Navy participation with the Escort during the first half of the race was very gratifying. Coast Guard Communications station honolulu took over roll call after uss PRAIRIE went into port. The navy Marine Corps Mars radio system forwarded the roll call and handicap reports both to the mainland and island stations. Though a slow race, enthusiasm remained high and another record was broken — the Trophy Dinner was attended by 1,500 people. At the Dinner, the true spirit of international goodwill was exhibited between the crews of ARRIBA, MIYAKADORI, HMCs ORIOLE and others with toasts presented at each table. Just after the floor show of the dinner, Bill Nickerson’s NIMBLE docked as “Tail-end Charlie.”
Outstanding in the memory of your Commodore, is the cooperation and involvement of so many members of Transpac as well as the Honolulu Committee, who make this race successful and such a pleasure to both participate in and to administer.
AYC History Highlights
As recorded in the July 23, 1891, Anacortes American, the Anacortes Yacht Club was “instituted Saturday evening July 14, 1891 at the room of Mr. R. Barnes on P Avenue. That evening J.P. Nelson became the first elected Commodore."
On August 21, 1892, the Club became a charter member of the Northwestern International Yachting Association (NIYA) formed during an annual regatta hosted by the Fairhaven Yacht Club. Amos Bowman, the founder of Anacortes, was a member of the Yacht Club’s House Committee and generously offered the use of an acre of land on Hat Island and a house in town for Yacht Club purposes.
When Anacortes was not chosen as a railroad terminus, the city experienced an economic slump. Then, according to the September, 1909 edition of the Pacific Motor Boat, “After a lapse of seventeen years the Anacortes Yacht Club has been rejuvenated."
World War I brought a halt to organized regattas and the NIYA dissolved. But in May, 1920, at Victoria, Canadians and Americans founded the Pacific International Yacht Association (PIYA) and boating competition once again became popular. In 1949, the May 19th edition of the Anacortes American reported that once again the AYC was reorganized, “the Club burgee was displayed and the Club charter was read with 53 people signing up as charter members. Considering the circumstances it seems a safe bet to say the club is assured of ultimate success.”
After WWII (1949), the Anacortes Yacht Club managed to find a meeting room in the Cap Sante Boat Haven and for a few years had an annual October banquet and race in Bellingham with the Bellingham Yacht Club. AYC sponsored the Anacortes Outboard Association, held dinghy races, and the fleet would pass in review each year in the Anacortes Marineers Pageant.
The 1950’s featured club efforts to upgrade the old Morrison Mill building which was floated over to the clubhouse location near the current Cap Sante Marina Office. As both the club and community grew in the 1960s-70s, so too did the cruising and racing programs.
Cruising the San Juan and Gulf Islands has always been an AYC tradition, with the club making annual voyages throughout the San Juans including Sucia and beyond to the Gulf Islands. The cruising program varies each year but always features a fleet of sail and power boats and an array of activities at each destination.
In 1979, the Anacortes Yacht Club was incorporated as a non-profit organization. It has helped support Interclub, and helped raise money to buy land on Fossil Bay, Sucia Island, which was then donated to the Washington State Parks Department.
One of the great high points for the Anacortes Yacht Club occurred in July 1991, when the AYC celebrated its 100th anniversary by moving into new accommodations at the north basin of Cap Santé Boat Haven. In 1992, AYC purchased adjacent property that had been vacated by the City of Anacortes. In the mid-90s, the interior of the downstairs room, known as the ‘Multi-purpose Room’, was completed. Various re-models of the upstairs level of the Clubhouse have improved the restrooms, closets, storage space and bar location.
In the mid 2000s, Core Builders of New Zealand, set up shop in town and built, for the BMW ORACLE TEAM, a high-tech carbon fiber monohull that raced in the 32nd America’s Cup Campaign. The club proudly displays one of the 8-foot rudders built for the trimaran that was gifted to the Club. In 2010, in recognition of the close ties the town had developed with the Core builders team, the Cup was brought to Anacortes and put on display for a public viewing. Members of the Club continue their association with the America’s Cup and have visited America’s Cup racing venues, enjoying special privileges because of the shared connection.
In the summer of 2011 the Club celebrated its 120th birthday with a potluck picnic. Over 150 members, past Commodores and friends were in attendance. It became obvious that, due to our success, we were outgrowing our present facilities and efforts were begun to design a Clubhouse extension. During 2013 the club added another 700 square feet to the upper floor and additional storage below.
In the past decade, AYC has hosted several National Championships including the Lido 14 National Sailing Championships in July 2012, the Baker Cup Youth Nationals in 2016 and the SC27 nationals in 2017. These highly successful regattas showcased the ability of the Club, and its members, to provide great sailing, hospitality and first class sailing opportunities to visiting yachtsmen and women from all corners of the United States.
Throughout 2016, AYC celebrated its 125 th anniversary with a full program of social, cruising and racing events, culminating in an epic celebration including the City Mayor and other invited guests. Continuing into 2017 & 2018, AYC continued to contribute to the community by supporting youth sailing in partnership with Anacortes High School and the City Parks & Rec., by being a lead organization in Opening Day and by giving free boat rides to over 500 people during the annual Waterfront Festival.
Much more history can be found at the Anacortes Maritime Museum, on their website, and on our website AnacortesYachtClub.org. Look for the Pdf of History slides and pictures that were prepared for the 125 th anniversary events. Acknowledgements go to Spencer Swain, Wendy Grey and John Wilkinson for ongoing documentation of our past accomplishments. AYC is noted for being a friendly and affordable yacht club offering full programs of Cruising, Racing and Social events in the stunning setting of Fidalgo Bay and the San Juan Islands. We look forward to a bright future as a community of those who love being on the water. Timeline - Summaries

About the FCYC
The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs is an organization made up of 36 yacht clubs located around the state from the panhandle to the Keys.
More Clubs, More Choices… Welcome to Council Life!
We invite you to experience for yourself the convenience, variety and fun that make FCYC membership so special.
On behalf of all of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, we look forward to the pleasure of serving you.
*Some member clubs have placed a limitation on reciprocal usage by nearby clubs. Enforcement of these limitations (when adopted by a club) is the responsibility of the individual club, not the Council.
FCYC Representation
Member clubs in the Council represent a population of approximately 37,300 club members who have aided in bringing many legislative matters favorable to the boating public to a successful conclusion. To assist the Council in monitoring boating-related legislation, the Council retains a legislative representative in Tallahassee.
Established in 1960, the FCYC is a respected force recognized as a potent organization of dedicated yachtsmen.
The Council is an active member of water oriented organizations such as the National Boating Federation. Close liaison is maintained with the U.S. Coast Guard in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami, and the Corp of Engineers district office in Jacksonville.
Our Member Clubs sponsor cruises on members’ boats to destinations along the East and Gulf Coasts of Florida and the Bahamas. The Council has also sponsored professionally organized, large ship cruises to unique locations in Europe, South America, through the Panama Canal, and many other destinations.

The History of the Des Moines Yacht Club
Charles E. (Mac) McCurdy and his wife Toni founded the Des Moines Yacht Club in 1957 as the Vagabond Outboard Boating Club with eight charter members. Waterfront property, approximately 50′ X 350′ was purchased late that year providing the membership with a clubhouse, caretaker’s cottage and existing buildings. The efforts of the membership the next several years brought about many improvements including a launching ramp with a dredged channel, parking facilities and a remodeled clubhouse.
The membership, recognizing the material gains and broadened interest in the boating fraternity, changed the name to the Vagabond Yacht club in 1963. In 1970, the Des Moines Marina was constructed encompassing the club waterfront within its breakwater. Wishing to be defined geographically and oriented with the marina, the membership once again elected to change the club name to, “The Des Moines Yacht Club”.
With the construction of the marina, the members fell heir to 350’ of fill, approximately doubling our property and, in turn, increasing the value of the investment. The clubhouse was doubled in size in 1975 to accommodate the rapidly expanding membership, which had grown to over 200 members. In 1977, more pilings were installed in the marina area, allowing the club to substantially increase the club dock area. At that time, improvements were also made to the dock power, water and lighting systems.
In the spring of 1978, it once again was becoming apparent that due to increases in membership, we were outgrowing our clubhouse facility. A building committee was formed for the purpose of determining whether we should remodel and expand our present facility, or build a completely new clubhouse. In July of 1979, approval was given for construction of a completely new clubhouse. Also, the club membership was limited to 300 active members. The beautiful new facility was completed and dedicated in the spring of 1980.
….and we continue making more history and great memories every day.

One of the early concerns of the Yacht Club was attracting new members, and to accomplish that, the Progressive Boat Party was conceived and has proved to be one of the most popular parties in the Club. The original Commodore's Ball was held in February with a Valentines Day theme. It was a free party for members...guests paid their own way. The parties provided the sociability with other boaters, which has become our greatest asset. We have all formed lasting friendships from the fine people we have met in the Club.
In the early days it was apparent that the Club needed a beach to picnic, swim and party on. Permission was granted to beach on the Southside of Hi-Line Beach, from Mike McClear, a fisherman, who used the pond to store carp until he could sell them to the New York market. The pond is now open for our boating use, through Kruse's cut.
In 1957 we purchased the Southside of Hi-Line for $5,000 and leased the Northside of Hi-Line from George Goggins of Stillwater. Bill Cotter for years negotiated a lease with Goggins, and in 1979 the Northside of Hi-Line beach was purchased from the Goggins family. Catfish Beach was leased and finally purchased in 1970 from a Wisconsin real estate man, George Webber. Electricity was installed on Hi-Line Beach in 1966 and after it proved successful, was installed at Catfish Beach a few years later. We have experimented with outhouses and trash barrels on the beach, and after several years both conveniences proved to be more trouble than they were worth. The Clubhouse has also grown through the years and the latest addition is a tribute to the hardworking building committee and the foresight of the Board of Directors in recognizing a need for expansion of our facilities.
The St. Croix Yacht Club has grown from 12 members in 1948 to well over 300 members and today represents, without question, the finest Yacht Club in the Upper Mississippi Area.
The St. Croix Yacht Club is located on the St. Croix River in Stillwater, Minnesota. One of our two private beaches is located just South of Stillwater on the Wisconsin side of the river. The second of the two beaches is located in Afton, on the Wisconsin side of the river.
The purpose of the Club is the promotion of social and aquatic functions as specified in Article II of the Amended Articles of Incorporation
