And then we also have built-in watch alarms in and tablet/phone apps (TimeZero, Plan2Nav, iSailor)... but those are pretty much just a circle around the , without any additional settings (especially set-able afterwards) for exact anchor location... OK as far as they go, but not particularly exact...
And then there's Drag Queen... which works well enough for the basic functions (and let's you set/refine the anchor location after the fact)... but it doesn't really do much more than that (graphic time plots, SMS to phones, etc.)...
So I thought I'd look to see if any of the other apps out there might be truly wonderful, something we could use as yet another layer of redundancy. All this brought on by a bouncy/rolly anchorage last night, where Drag Queen worked fine even if minimally...
We do Android; has anyone used any of these?

Anchor Watch
"Anchor Watch" uses the GPS on your smartphone to monitor your boat's position. If the boat moves outside of set limits, the program will alert you immediately. Alerts include phone calls, sound, vibration alerts, popups, email or SMS (through a third party). There are no more sleepless nights when you worry about weather your boat is dragging or not. Keep the phone next to where you are sleeping and a quick glance will assure you that all is ok. If the boat drags out of the predefined area (no limit on radius), it will alert you in any way you decide. Flashing text, sounding alarm or even call to another phone. As only anchor guard app for iOS, Anchor Watch allows for the manual adjustment of your anchor position, by touch of a finger or manual entry. So if you were busy with other things then setting the alarm, you can adjust for the drift. And if you anchored both stern and bow, Anchor Watch offers an unique course alert when a minor drift can still mean your boat is turned from the pier. Anchor Watch sophisticated filtering allows for GPS errors, which can occur every now and then. The settings panel is fully customized allowing a number of different alarm types. Of course it runs in the background too, which allows you to pursue other activities on your phone while Anchor Watch is on guard. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Fortunately you can tell Anchor Watch to conserve battery and update only in foreground. Available as an in-app purchase are advanced nautical maps as well as the functionality to download and show offline maps which you can use when you don't have a data connection (or don't want to use it due to roaming charges. The maps available are based on the http://www.openseamap.org data. Check for quality and availability on their website, it is under rapid community development. You can also send in your maps and they will be added to the server for the benefit of all. Anchor Watch is under constant development, so if you have any remarks just drop an email or write a feature request in the comment section and we will get straight to it. Known issue: enable Alerts in iPhone->Settings->Notifications to receive audio alerts in the background
Todays smart phones have a hardware that is mind boggling. Why not put it to useful use?

Tested: Vesper Cortex VHF radio, AIS and remote monitoring
Theo Stocker
August 11, 2021
Promising to revolutionise how sailors communicate on board, the Vesper Cortex integrates VHF radio, Class B AIS, remote vessel monitoring and more
Combining AIS with VHF is a game-changer
The modern sailor has an array of navigation systems at their fingertips providing information and certainty unimaginable to previous generations.
As radio , GPS , radar and AIS have proliferated, so to have the electronic gizmos at the chart table and on deck.
Getting them to talk to each other can still be a challenge, even in the days of NMEA 2000 .
Problems can arise when you try to integrate different transmitting devices, such as DSC radio, AIS, WiFi and cellular gateways, and all the radio frequency processing that goes with that, which is where the Vesper Cortex comes in.
Vesper Cortex VHF, AIS and Monitoring is easy to install
A neat black box, hidden away, and an intuitive user interface for the smartphone world, integrates all of those functions so that they work seamlessly together.
So what does it do?
Cortex is a DSC handheld VHF radio with up to ten tethered or wireless handsets.
It is a Class B+ SOTDMA AIS transceiver sharing the VHF antenna to avoid splitter issues, although it includes a splitter for a standalone VHF radio to run through the same antenna.
The smartAIS also calculates collision risks and necessary avoiding action. It is an anchor watch and MOB alarm system.
It is a remote monitoring and control system when you’re off the boat. It is a wifi gateway between your smart devices and boat network.
It is a verbal alarm system that tells you what an alarm is for without needing to look at the screen.
Because the system is built around its software, rather than separate hardware for each function, it can do all of these things at once, and has the capacity to have new functionality added over time, avoiding the need to replace it, hopefully for some time.
Intercom between the handsets, multi-channel VHF scanning, and radio transmission rewind to listen back to conversations you missed are all in the pipeline.
Installation of the Vesper Cortex
Installation is pretty straightforward, and you can install it alongside your existing setup, or instead of, and get rid of a number of bulky boxes.
It requires power, a network cable, antenna cable and a GPS cable, and each handset needs a power supply (all data is wireless), either to the wired tether, or to the charging cradle for the wireless handset, though this doesn’t need to be near where you are going to use it.
It has its own wifi antenna as well as built-in sensors including battery voltage, barometer, 9-axis motion and heading sensor, five ports for NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 inputs and two outputs so you can monitor any information on your network and add a speaker.
In normal listening mode with AIS on, it uses just 0.8A (12V). Transmitting on VHF low power that goes up to 0.9A and on high power 3.4A.

Boat intercom system tested: Crew-Talk Plus
A boat intercom system has a place on a racing yacht but how useful is it for cruisers? Toby Heppell…
Audio is provided by a 10W, 85dB speaker in each handset, and both the hub and the handsets are IPX7 waterproof (submersion for 30 minutes).
The very high resolution, sunlight visible touch screens are made with toughened Gorilla glass, and can be used when wet or with gloved hands, though all controls are replicated with physical buttons (menu, back, VHF, Ch 16, MOB and Call) and paddlewheel.
The handsets have rubber edges and back for antislip and protection.
The microphone is central on the front, with a push-to-talk button on the left side and volume control and power button on the right, and a DSC distress button under a hinged flap on the back, so it feels like a standard VHF handset to use.
Operating the system
For a system that does so much, operation is surprisingly intuitive and simple. There are seven main screens, accessible from the main menu giving: VHF radio, Vessel directory, AIS plotter, Instruments, Collision avoidance , Anchor watch and MOB.
Every page has a status bar across the top showing VHF channel and power, and the status of battery, GPS and wifi.
The VHF radio page shows your call sign and MMSI number, transmission power, channel and its intended purpose – selected by swiping the screen or rotating the paddlewheel, saved favourite channels and dual watch.
Squelch is set automatically to your preferred sensitivity (though exact control would be nice and volume can be set for the hub, or for individual handsets. At the bottom of the screen any watched vessels or collision risks are displayed.
The AIS vessel directory page displays priority/collision risk vessels, then saved favourites, then other alphabetically, with the option to call, find on the plotter screen, or avoid.
The plotter screen doesn’t have any cartography, but has a clear range display, with head up or north up options, zoomable from 0.5 miles to 60 miles.
Collision risks or saved vessels are highlighted and you can filter out vessels such as those that aren’t moving.
The icons show whether it is a ship, power or sail and how fast it is going. You can see all of the same data displayed on your chartplotter screen.
Tap one to bring up vessel details, including current range and bearing, CPA and TCPA, and call it on DSC, or to view it in Collision avoidance, where you can see the impact of any course adjustments on your CPA before you make them.
When you come to anchor, hit the anchor down button to record it’s precise location, and then set your desired guard zone.
The page displays depth, calculates the scope chain you have laid, and other vessels on AIS. You can alter exact anchor location and swinging circle parameters.
It will voice an alert if you drag, the wind changes, or you hit a water depth parameter.
If you have the Vortex Cortex Onboard app, you will get a phone notification for any alarms set, both for anchoring and any on board systems selected, with a full view of the same information and display as if you were on board.
Verdict on the Vesper Cortex
What this does is bring almost every electronic function other than navigation into one place, designed to function seamlessly together.
Having installed the unit, connected the handsets and entered my boat’s details, there was no setup – it all just worked.
Using the Vesper Cortex as an AIS to find, contact and avoid other vessels, and as a plain VHF radio, all while standing at the helm with a handheld device, was so intuitive that I quickly forgot how revolutionary this actually is.
There are other DSC radios with integrated Class B AIS just coming on to the market as well, but the fact that it does so much more – not least anchor watch and remote monitoring – makes this a genuinely game-changing piece of equipment.
Quality and functionality were all top notch.
It felt solid and rugged, worked well when wet and not at all vulnerable.
On small boats, the tethered handset supplied would be sufficient, with a socket at the chart table or on deck allowing you to use it in both places.
On larger vessels, the ability to keep the handset on you at the helm, on deck or by your bunk is invaluable.
The thought of losing one overboard, especially if it’s your only handset, doesn’t bear thinking about, so clipping on a lanyard and float would be the first thing I would do.
The only slight gripes I had was that the screen wasn’t quite as bright in direct sunlight as my B&G Triton 2 instrument display, though it was still perfectly legible
Unsurprisingly, it comes with an eye-watering price tag, at least compared to other radios, though this quickly evens out if you also add in the cost of AIS, antennas, splitters and remote monitoring systems.
This is more likely, therefore, to be installed on new boats or those having a complete electronics upgrade so your setup can be designed around it.
While there are some shortcomings to the system – intercom, channel scanning and transmission rewind aren’t yet available – the reassuring thing about this system is that it is designed for functions to be added via free software upgrades as functions are imagined and added, making it a pretty future-proof investment.

Morgan Stanley Chief Jonathan Bloomer Also On Sunken Bayesian Yacht With Michael Lynch

The chairman of Morgan Stanley International was reportedly among the six missing people—including UK tech mogul Michael Lynch— after the 184-foot luxury sailing yacht Bayesian sank in rough seas near Sicily early Monday morning, according to new reports.
Italian emergency services headed out to sea towards the area off the Sicilian coast on Tuesday, ... [+] Aug. 20, 2024.
Lynch , a British tech entrepreneur and one-time billionaire, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch are confirmed to be among those still missing after the ship sank (his wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued).
Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of the Morgan Stanley International bank and insurance company Hiscox, is also reportedly among the missing along with his wife, Judy.
Authorities on Monday told the BBC the missing people are presumed to still be inside the boat, and rescue operations resumed Tuesday morning.
The vessel had 22 people on board — 10 crew and 12 passengers — including people from the United States, Britain and Canada, when it overturned at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Italian coast guard.
Fifteen people were rescued from the vessel (including a 1-year-old girl), one person was found dead and six, including two Americans , remain missing, according to multiple reports.
Local media reported the person who died was a member of the crew, thought to be the yacht’s chef .

Who Are The Missing People Aboard The Bayesian Yacht?
Lynch, 59, and his daughter were the first to be reported as among the missing. Lynch's lawyer Chris Morvillo, a former assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has also not been found, nor has his wife and jewelry designer Neda Morvillo. Bloomer, 70, a close friend of Lynch's, is also missing along with his wife, Judy.
Key Background
The Bayesian was anchored near the port of Porticello overnight Sunday when a harsh storm hit the coast that included a " waterspout ," a tornado-like swirling column of air and water. The ship tipped over and quickly was drug underwater by its massive mast —it had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at 246 feet. Of the 15 people rescued in the aftermath, eight were treated at a local hospital.
Lynch was acquitted in a fraud trial in June after he was accused by Hewlett-Packard of artificially inflating the value of Autonomy before HP bought it for more than $11 billion in 2011. HP wrote off $8.8 million of Autonomy's value within a year of buying the company. Today, The Times estimates Lynch has a net worth of £500 million. He "had a lot of pride" in his yacht, a member of his staff told the U.K. paper, and business filings show the boat is legally owned by his wife, Bacares.
Surprising Fact: Lynch's Co-Defendant Stephen Chamberlain Died The Same Weekend
Stephen Chamberlain, who was acquitted in the same trial as Lynch in June, died hours after news broke of Lynch's disappearance. Chamberlain was hit by a car while jogging in England on Saturday morning and was put on life support before his death was announced late Monday, the Guardian reported . Lynch and Chamberlain were both indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud in the sale of Autonomy to HP before being acquitted.
What To Watch For
An ongoing search operation includes divers attempting to search the vessel, now sitting 160 feet below sea level, as well as rescue boats and helicopters, according to CNN .
$215,000. That's the cost to charter the Bayesian, a single-mast sailing vessel, for one week .
Crucial Quote
“She told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado, and they found themselves in the water,” Dr. Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at the pediatric hospital in Palermo, Italy, told The Times . “Some of them immediately managed to get onto the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn’t make it.”

Explained: Inside the superyacht | What challenges have faced divers?
Eyewitness: Sombre scenes greet rescue teams as final body is brought ashore
Live reporting by Niamh Lynch
We're ending our live coverage for this evening but here is a recap of what we know:
Prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation into the Bayesian sinking;
Officials have revealed more details on their investigation and the difficult five-day rescue mission;
The six bodies found during the search in recent days were all in cabins on the left-hand - and highest - side of the ship. Five were found in the first cabin and the sixth was found in the third;
Prosecutors said the six passengers were most likely asleep when the boat sank;
The probe is now focusing on the crew and their responsibilities, with the captain set to undergo more questioning.
Monday 19 August
The Bayesian yacht, flying a British flag, sinks at around 5am local time when the area was hit by a tornado.
Fifteen people are rescued from the 56 metre vessel - including a mother and baby - but another seven remain missing.
One body, later confirmed to be the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, is found near the wreck.
It emerges that British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among six people that remain missing.
Tuesday 20 August
The search continues for the six tourists missing.
It is reported that among those missing are Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.
Police divers try to reach the hull of the ship, resting at a depth of 50 metres.
Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco say early inspections of the wreck were "unsuccessful" because of limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages.
The operation is later described as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.
Tributes pour in for Mr Thomas, with his friend Gareth Williams saying: "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit."
Wednesday 21 August
The search for the six people unaccounted for enters a third day, with crews carrying out inspections of the yacht's internal hull.
A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrive in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking.
A helicopter is drafted in to help with the search effort and remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search.
Five bodies are found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon. Only four of them are brought to shore.
Body bags are seen being taken to Porticello in the afternoon where dozens of emergency services staff wait.
Searches finish for the day just before 7.30pm.
Thursday 22 August
The search resumes for the remaining missing person.
The body of the fifth missing person, found but not recovered the previous day, is brought to shore.
A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returns with a blue body bag to the port of Porticello just after 8.45am local time on Thursday.
Tributes pour in for Mr Lynch and Mr and Mrs Bloomer after they are identified as having died.
The search is called off at around 8pm in Sicily, with divers expected to begin again at 6.30am on Friday.
Friday 23 August
The search continues for the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian, Hannah Lynch.
Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, says the search for Hannah has not been "easy or quick", comparing the sunken yacht to an "18-storey building full of water".
The coastguard confirms in the late morning that her body has been found.
A green body bag is brought to the port of Porticello from the site of the sinking.
A spokesperson announces on behalf of the Lynch family that they are "devastated" and "in shock" after the deaths of Mike and Hannah.
Hannah's sister Esme pays tribute to her "little angel".
Saturday 24 August
A press conference is held in the court of an Italian town, Termini Imerese.
Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio tells reporters that his office has opened an initial investigation against unknown persons into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.
As the focus now turns to the manslaughter investigation, here's another reminder of the seven victims of the sinking and the 15 people who survived.
A close friend of the Lynch family has added to the chorus of tributes for British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died in Monday's superyacht sinking.
Susannah Gurdun, who lives in Suffolk, recalled being "daunted" when she first met Mr Lynch at a dinner party, before discovering he was "so much more than the corporate cliche".
"He was riveting. He was funny, and kind, and endlessly interesting; capable of talking about anything and everything," she said.
Ms Gardun said the businessman also had a "thrilling ability" to make complicated subjects "accessible to those of us less blessed with a science acumen".
"In particular, he was wonderful with children. I will never forget hearing him explain to a group of them - including our ten year old son - the physics of why the sky went pink at sunset," she said.
She went on describe Mr Lynch as a "true genius" and "phenomenal creative".
Ms Gardun said his daughter Hannah was also showing "serious literary promise", and added that it was "beyond tragic that we will never know where her own particular brilliance might have led".
"I still feel blessed to have shared that time with them in Spain. Not just because I witnessed Mike’s incredible storytelling; but because I was given a chance of understanding what that moment said about all four of them as a united vibrant loving family," she said.
"He was an extraordinary human being and it was - truly - a privilege to have known him."
A yacht crew member who survived the sinking has paid tribute to Hannah Lynch, calling her a "diamond in a sea of stars".
Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, has released a statement after divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage, which is believed to be 18-year-old Hannah.
"Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars," she said.
"Bright, beautiful and always shining. What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.
"While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.
"I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive."
Ms Murray's statement comes as a new image of Hannah Lynch and her father Mike Lynch is released:
Prosecutors announced in this morning's news conference that they have opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation.
Officials were unable to answer several queries from the media, saying they needed time to establish the facts, but what are the key questions facing prosecutors?
Why weren't passengers who remained on board the vessel warned about escaping from the yacht?
The prosecutor in charge of the case, Raffaele Cammarano, suggested that some passengers may have been asleep when others were awake.
Asked why they were not woken up or alerted, he said that is something investigators are trying to work out from the statements of the survivors.
He called it an "essential" part of the inquiry.
Why were several of the passengers in one cabin?
The press conference heard several bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which was not theirs.
Mr Cammarano said investigators currently do not know the reason for them being discovered in the same cabin.
The chief of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht pinned to the right and suggested people tried to go on the other side, taking refuge in cabins in the higher part of the wreck.
Why did the boat sink?
The vessel had been deemed "unsinkable" by its manufacturer - Italian shipyard Perini Navi.
The Bayesian was hit by a downburst, according to Mr Cammarano, which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.
Officials will look into the safety equipment on the sunken vessel.
Mr Cammarano was asked about whether there is a black box and if the hatches were left open.
He said investigators do not have exact information about the black box and that the first phase of the inquiry will look into it.
Why were nearby vessels not similarly affected?
Another yacht, the Sir Robert BP, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian when extreme weather hit.
Its crew helped to rescue 15 people from the stricken vessel.
Italian officials said they would be looking at how the downburst could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels.
What weather warnings was the Bayesian alerted to?
Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, said the weather at the time of the yacht's sinking was abnormal and there was nothing to suggest such an extreme situation would arise.
He said there were forecasts of winds and a storm alert, but there was no warning of a tornado.
"Given that the conditions were such, there wasn't anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising," he said.
"There are vessels that can monitor, after all, these events and one would have thought that the captain had taken precautions."
How long will it take to recover the sailing vessel?
Mr Macauda could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht.
"Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe of the retrieval of the wreck and of course all that has to be submitted to the port authorities and in parallel of course there will be the inquiry results and it's only really then that we will be able to authorise the operation," he said.
"I can't say, like some experts who have already spoken on the subject, [said] that it will be eight weeks."
He made clear that the owners will bear the full cost of retrieval, although he could not estimate the figure.
Italian authorities detailed the challenging and meticulous rescue operation to recover the six missing people from the Bayesian wreck (see 9.18am post).
But why was the five-day search so difficult?

Prosecutors have given a lengthy news conference this morning on their investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian.

Marine investigator James Wilkes has been speaking to Sky News after this morning's press conference.
"Naturally, there are more questions than there are substantive answers at the moment - that's the nature of investigative work.
"Something forced that yacht to roll beyond its nominal stability limits, such that it wasn't able to right itself with the ingress of a certain amount of seawater that was coming into the yacht.
"So the investigators are going to ask themselves one initial question - what must the conditions have been for this to happen?
"Then they are going to look at the contributing factors to the yacht, sinking, and, and the unfortunate loss of life."
Prosecutors said this morning that the future of the investigation is reliant on recovering the wreck.
Mr Wilkes said the yacht is a "major piece of physical evidence in and of itself."
"It's lying at 50 metres, which is a recoverable depth.
"If it was significantly deeper, then I'm not sure they'd be considering salvage at this stage or certainly, the salvage question would be a lot more complicated to answer.
"But if there was the ability to raise that yacht in one piece safely, then it gives the investigators physically more to look at."
Mr Wilkes said he was unsure if the yacht would have a "black box" - called a voyage data recorder in shipping.
"It would record things like GPS position, heading speed, engine telemetry, whether the radars were on, what they were recording, alarms, communications from the yacht itself, any audio on the bridge.
"But more often than not, these are on merchant ships. The yacht was a commercial yacht in the sense that it could be chartered out so it's quite possible it has a voyage data recorder on, but I'm not sure that it does. I don't know that as a matter of fact," he said.

The Ultimate Anchor Watch
Anchor watch systems work by creating a security zone around the boat, which is the electronic circle the boat is allowed to wander around in without tripping an alarm. To prevent false alarms, that circle must be large enough so the normal movement of the boat, and the inaccuracies in setting up the circle, don't cause the anchor alarm to go off.
