Silent Speed 28

By combining our futuristic design language with blistering pace and a superyacht finish, the Speed 28 is the first of a new breed of SILENT. She is powered by a state-of-the-art eD-TEC drivetrain, including foil assistance and embedded solar cells on the hardtop.

This marks the start of a strategic partnership between the SILENT Group and eD-TEC. Together, this technological alliance will take electric mobility on the water to a new level.

This innovative speedboat is ideally suited as a superyacht tender or as a fun boat that can easily be trailered – a perfect blend of unmatched performance with range and comfort.

Pure adrenalin

The original concept of the new model was developed by eD-TEC. Twin 100kW eD-QDrive electric motors are the heart of this 8.6m rigid inflatable boat. These make it capable of eye-watering speeds in excess of 60 knots for short bursts. The lithium-ion batteries (LiFePO4) storing around 100kWh of energy, allow it to cover more than 70 miles at cruising speed, which is an exhilarating 30 knots.

Helm Station

The  Silent Speed 28 is controlled through an intuitive and custom-designed user interface, which keeps the most vital information and functions always in sight. Three foils significantly increase range and comfort. In auto mode, the AI box assists the driver’s inputs via the rudders, throttle and foils to create the most efficient cruising experience.

Lightweight and robust

The hull shape closely resembles a catamaran, with two narrow hulls in the water and a broad, blunt bow above the waterline.

Built in carbon fibre, the Silent Speed 28 is lightweight yet remarkably robust. Solar cells generating up to 704W of power cover the upper surface of the hard top, more than enough to maintain the battery that supplies all the onboard systems.

Silent-Yachts, a global leader in solar-electric catamarans, is launching a new line of high-speed performance boats powered by electric propulsion.

The first boat in the line is the Silent Speed 28, which the Austrian boatbuilder says will ally the futuristic looks of the Silent range with ‘blistering pace and superyacht finish’.

The first Silent Speed 28 launches in October 2022 and will be among the fastest electric production boats on the market.

With foil assistance and embedded solar cells on the hardtop, it is positioned as a superyacht tender or a fun boat that can be easily trailered.

The original concept of the new model was developed by eD-TEC . Twin 100kW eD-QDrive electric motors are the heart of this 8.6m rigid inflatable boat. These make it capable of impressive speeds in excess of 60 knots for short bursts.

The boat is equipped with lithium-ion batteries (LiFePO4) storing around 100kWh of energy. This allows it to cover more than 70 miles at cruising speed, which the builder claims will be 30 knots.

“With 18 years of experience in designing and building solar-powered catamarans, we were hungry to push the boundaries again,” says Silent-Yachts founder and CEO Michael Köhler.

Köhler explains that the Silent Speed 28 has been developed in cooperation with Michael Jost (CEO & founder of eD-Tec, former head of group strategy product & CSO of Volkswagen Brand) and his team.

“Our combined know-how coupled with continuing technological advances has made it possible to develop a model line that combines spectacular performance with impressive range.”

The eD-Qdrive 1 powers the Silent Speed 28 to a top speed of more than 60 knots, while operating in virtual silence. The power unit is developed to offer maximum performance and safety whilst ensuring low maintenance. Here again, the entire system possesses an entirely redundant control system, just like an aircraft.

In hull shape, the Silent Speed 28 most closely resembles a catamaran, with two narrow hulls in the water and a broad, blunt bow above the waterline. This provides plenty of buoyancy and disperses spray. A rigid hardtop provides shade in the boat, both for the driver and the passengers.

Silent says the carbon fibre build helps the vessel to be both lightweight and incredibly robust. Solar cells carpet the upper surface of the hard top, currently generating up to 704W of power.

Recharging the main propulsion battery naturally requires a dedicated charging point. The onboard charger can handle 150kW DC, which fully recharges the battery in around 40 minutes. AC charging is possible at up to 22kW. From a Silent Yacht, the battery of the Silent Speed 28 can be recharged with the 22.5kW DC wallbox from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in two hours. Port infrastructure varies, but even a standard three-phase charger could do the same job in four hours, according to Silent.

Silent-Yachts is debuting two vessels at the 2022 Cannes Yachting Festival this week ; the Silent Tender and Silent 60 with kite wing.

Silent targets 60 knots with Speed 28

The Austrian-owned builder of solar-electric catamarans enters a new sector with the Speed 28, with drivetrain technology supplied by eD-TEC.

Silent is developing the Speed 28, which is expected to top 60 knots, leading the Austrian-owned company to say the 8.6m carbon-fibre RIB will “rocket straight to the top of the list of the fastest electric production boats” when launched later this year. Featuring flexible seating for up to 10 people, the Speed 28 has been earmarked as a superyacht tender or ‘a fun boat that can be easily trailered’.

The Speed 28 is planned to be the first in a line of performance boats from Silent in partnership with eD-TEC, which is headed by Michael Jost, a member of the Silent Advisory Board. The founder and CEO of eD-TEC, Jost is the former Head of Group Strategy Product and Chief Strategy Officer of Volkswagen Group, and oversaw the company’s expansive electrification plan.

The Speed 28 is fitted with twin 100kW eD-QDrive electric motors, which are expected to give the RIB a top speed of 60-plus knots for short bursts and a range of 70 miles at a cruising speed of 30 knots while operating in virtual silence. The boat features embedded solar cells on the hardtop that generate up to 704W of power, while its lithium-ion batteries (LiFePO4) store around 100kWh of energy.

The Speed 28 marks the start of a strategic partnership between the Silent Group and eD-TEC, which the companies say is a ‘technological alliance that will take electric mobility on the water to a new level’.

The boat’s systems and components are interlinked to the AI Box via CAN bus, which tunes the vessel and increases performance and range, making constant adjustments to reduce roll and pitch. The vessel is controlled through a specially designed eD-Platform user interface, which puts key information and functions at the operator’s fingertips.

The eD-TEC drivetrain includes three foils: a fixed one forward that links the two narrow hulls, and two moveable aft foils that point inwards from hull insides. A broad, blunt bow above the waterline provides buoyancy and disperses spray, while a rigid hardtop sits atop narrow pillars framing the windscreen and a Y-shaped support aft.

The onboard charger can handle 150kW DC, which fully recharges the battery in around 40 minutes, while AC charging is possible at up to 22kW. From a Silent yacht, the battery of the Speed 28 can be recharged with the 22.5kW DC wallbox from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in two hours. A standard three-phase charger could do the same job in about four hours, according to Silent, although port infrastructure varies. www.silent-yachts.com

Carbon fiber hull
