J Class Sailing Yachts Collide In Antigua (video)

antigua yacht crash

BY APB Staff on 19 Mar 2020

Two of four racing superyachts damaged at starting line

During the 10th Superyacht Challenge Antigua (Mar 11-15), two of the four competing J Class superyachts – the 43.6m Svea and 42.6m Topaz – were in a collision before the start of Race 1 on Mar 12. Two Topaz crew members received medical attention, one with four broken ribs, and both boats pulled out of the race with severe damage, according to the J Class Association.⁣

Following the hearing into the incident, the protest committee statement reported these facts:

1. Topaz was approaching the start line on starboard approximately 1min 40sec before the start.

2. Svea on port was on a collision course with Topaz .

3. Despite a last-minute turn to bear away Svea collided with the port side of Topaz at the runner winch causing serious damage.

4. Topaz luffed to avoid when it was clear Svea was not keeping clear

5. On Topaz two crew members were injured with one crew member suffering 4 broken ribs as he was pushed overboard by the bow of Svea . On Topaz the port runner winch was torn off. The boom was broken. Both running back stays, mainsheet and backstay broke under the load. The port gunwale was damaged from the runner winch to the stern. The mast was put under extreme load from the impact and will need further inspection.

6. On Svea one crew member was pulled out of the boat by the runner tail of Topaz . His injuries were minor. The forward underbody of Svea was badly damaged.

7. Both boats immediately retired from the race.

The protest committee concluded that Svea failed to keep clear as a port tack boat and broke rule 10 & 14; and that it was not reasonably possible for Topaz to avoid the collision.

The decision was that Svea took the appropriate penalty by retiring; and Topaz is entitled to redress of average points for Race 1 based on her results in the remainder of the regatta.

However, after the collision neither Svea nor Topaz were able to take any further part in the Antigua Superyacht Challenge regatta.

The original lines for the Super-J Svea were by Swede Tore Holm in 1937, but the yacht was never built, according to the J Class Association. Holm’s drawings were eventually discovered by yachting historian John Lammerts van Beuren, and the longest modern J-Class at 43.6m (143ft) was built at the Vitters yard in Zwartsluis, the Netherlands, for an American owner and launched in 2017.

The J Class yacht J8, Topaz,  was an unbuilt 1935 design by Frank Paine, who also designed Yankee . Topaz  was launched in 2010 by Holland Jachtbouw, with naval architecture by Hoek Design.

The J Class has its roots in the oldest sporting race in the world, The America’s Cup, which was born from an annual race around the Isle of Wight, hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron and called the 100 Guinea Cup, according to the association.

In 1851, an overseas yacht was allowed to enter the race for the first time. The yacht America was built that year to an innovative new design and had sailed to the Solent in search of racing. Initially excluded from racing against British yachts, she was finally allowed to enter the Round the Island Race for the 100 Guinea Cup.

Winning the race a few minutes ahead of the next British yacht, America claimed the trophy that became known as the America’s Cup and took it back to the USA to await challengers.

In 1929 Sir Thomas Lipton, famous for his import of Lipton Tea from India, issued his fifth challenge to the Americans for the America’s Cup. He commissioned the build of the first J Class yacht, Shamrock V (37m), which signified the start of a new era in design evolution and racing.

The Universal Rule came into effect in 1930, whereby the size of a yacht was determined by waterline length and shown as an alphabetical list. ‘J’ signified yachts with a waterline length of 75ft to 87ft. The addition of the new design Bermuda mast allowed the yachts to carry a huge sail plan. Nothing so large and ‘awesome’ had been built previously.

The rest is history, and Shamrock V is still sailing strong.

The 11th Superyacht Challenge Antigua will be held March 9-14, 2021.

Superyacht Challenge Antigua : Dramatic J-Class collision off Antigua

Tatjana Pokorny

 ·  13.03.2020

Superyacht Challenge Antigua: Dramatic J-Class collision off Antigua

The accident occurred shortly before the start of the first race of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua: 90 seconds before the starting signal, the J-Class yacht "Svea" collided with her classmate "Topaz", dramatically running over her stern with her pointed bow. The fact that the sailors were largely unharmed seems almost miraculous when you look at the pictures. Both yacht beauties were badly damaged. One sailor from "Topaz" went overboard, two "Topaz" sailors required medical treatment but were not seriously injured. This was announced in a very brief statement on Friday night by the J Class Association.

The jury decided that the "Svea" crew was at fault for the crash

Both boats were able to reach the harbour of Antigua under their own power, but can no longer take part in the regatta. The regatta jury has since determined that the "Svea" crew violated rules 10 and 14. At the time of the collision, "Svea" was sailing on starboard, "Topaz" on port and with right of way. There was initially no further comment from the up to 35 crews involved, nor from the organisers or the class association. The video of the momentous crash is one of several clips circulating on social networks and shows at the end how the "Velsheda" crew members sailing very close to the accident take cover below deck because they fear that the masts of the boats involved in the collision will break. The shouts of "below deck now" can be heard loudly.

"Topaz" and "Svea" at a regatta last year

For the rest of the fleet, the start of the beautiful sailing show was less dramatic: in the "Bucaneers" class, the 26-metre Oyster 885 "Firebird" with tactician and double Olympic champion Jesper Bank from Denmark took the lead. In the "Privateers" class, the 33-metre-long "Missy" is in the lead, and in the "Corsairs" class, "WinWin" was initially ahead of "Nilaya" and "Pink Gin VI".

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

The Antiguan government has established that two yachts moored in the Caribbean island belong to Roman Abramovich, confirming a Financial Times investigation that revealed the vessels appeared to be owned by the sanctions-hit oligarch.

The FT reported this week that boats docked in Antigua’s Falmouth Harbour were owned by a British Virgin Island company with ties to Abramovich, prompting the Caribbean nation to call on the UK government to help confirm whether the oligarch was their ultimate owner.

In a letter to the British High Commissioner to Barbados seen by the FT, Antigua’s minister of foreign affairs Paul Chet Greene said the island’s government had requested information on whether the owner of the BVI company, Wenham Overseas Limited, is on Britain’s sanctions list, in light of “persistent allegations by the Financial Times that the vessels could be owned by Mr Roman Abramovich”.

The letter then confirmed that the British High Commission had provided Antiguan authorities with a letter “from the Financial Investigation Agency of the British Virgin Islands which states the beneficial owner of Wenham Overseas Ltd is Roman Abramovich”.

Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea Football Club, has been placed under sanctions by the UK and the EU, though not by the US, for his allegedly close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

While Antigua said this month that it would enforce all US, EU and UK sanctions on Russian entities and individuals, the island nation initially struggled to verify the ownership of the two boats.

Antigua’s confirmation of Abramovich’s ownership of the yachts raises the prospect that they could be seized . The letter noted that Antigua “will provide full assistance to the Government of the United Kingdom” if it receives a request under the two nations’ Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty.

British officials confirmed the government was in contact with the authorities of Antigua and Barbuda and was providing assistance. The UK said it would not comment on discussions.

The yachts in question — called Halo and Garçon — are worth about $38mn and $20mn respectively, according to valuation service VesselsValue.

Halo was built for Australian billionaire James Packer and was originally named EJI after the initials of his three children. However, the casino heir put the yacht up for sale a few months after it was delivered in 2018, reportedly because it was “too small”.

Garçon is a 67-metre explorer vessel designed to carry helicopters and an “armada of water toys”, and was built for Ukrainian billionaire Yuriy Kosiuk, who sold the so-called support yacht last year.

Collision causes serious damage at Antigua Sailing Week

Two yachts forced to retire early following a port/starboard crash

Antigua Sailing Week

Two yachts were forced to retire early after a port/starboard collision severely damaged both yachts on Day 4 of Antigua Sailing Week.

According to Peter Anthony, Chairmen of Ondeck, the crash was caused when the Oyster 82, named Starry Night of the Caribbean, crashed into the side of their Farr 65, called Spirit of Isis.

Peter Anthony, Chairman of Ondeck commented: “During the first race today one of our yachts, Spirit of Isis, was involved in a port and starboard incident with Oyster 82, Starry Night that caused serious damage to our Farr 65 and put an end to its continuation in the regatta. I would like to thank Antigua & Barbuda Search & Rescue (ABSAR) and Antigua Coastguard, as well as a boat from the Antigua Sailing Week Organising Committee, for their swift response and assistance. Luckily only very minor injuries were sustained that were treated by the ABSAR crew ashore. Once safely on the dock, the skipper and owner of Starry Night were quick to apologise for the collision showing good sport.”   Skipper of Isis, Vicky Blunt explained:” The regatta was going really well and a fantastic performance has been put in by the team who are mainly charter guests. We were looking forward to another good race vying for a podium position and were climbing steadily through the fleet tacking our way to the windward mark. Whilst we were on starboard tack there was an unfortunate incident involving Starry Night who came at us on port tack, ending our race in dramatic fashion. Thankfully everyone on board responded well and rallied together to bring the boat and crew safely back alongside. Many thanks to ABSAR and the Coastguard for their speedy response and assistance in this incident.”   Other Ondeck charter guests racing on Beneteau First 40.7s and First 40s continue to have a fantastic regatta thanks to the hard working Ondeck team. Following day one of the regatta the First 40.7 Escaped Aussies had an abrupt end when they had a coming together with Asahi, Dehler 47. The Ondeck team came to the rescue, working through the night to prepare a yacht from their sailing school to make it race ready in time for the 10 o’clock start the following day.   Ondeck are arranging a replacement yacht to enable their transatlantic charter guests to sail from Antigua to Portsmouth, UK as planned on Thursday, 10th May. Their event known as the Atlantic Challenge occurs annually following Antigua Sailing Week.

Chef Recaldo Thomas dead in Bayesian superyacht sinking as he's pictured for first time

The body of a man recovered near the Bayesian yacht is believed to be that of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat

The chef whose body was pulled from the sea after the Bayesian yacht sinking in Palermo on Monday has been named and pictured for the first time.

Recaldo Thomas is believed to be the chef recovered from the water after the vessel was struck by a tornado and capsized in the early hours of Monday. The Canadian-Antiguan had been working on the boat as a chef at the time.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Thomas as the search continued on Tuesday for others who remained missing. Gareth Williams, a friend of Mr Thomas who he knew for 30 years, described him as a "well-loved, kind human" with a "calm spirit".

He told the BBC : "He would come over to mine over the weekend and he would sing. He had the deepest, most sultry voice in the world , and a smile that lit up the room.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house. He loved yachting, but he was tired."

Another friend of Mr Thomas' from Antigua described him as "always positive" and a "sought after" chef by the super-rich who "wanted to hang out with someone social" while yachting. Eli Fuller said: "The kids would see all these white people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man travelling all over the world - it was important for our community."

The search for the six missing passengers, who include British billionaire Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, were ongoing on Tuesday, but authorities said efforts were being hampered by the wreck's position 50m below the sea's surface.

Furniture and a "world of objects" were blocking access to the yacht's cabins, authorities said. Also missing are American jewellery designer Neda Morvillo and husband Chris Morvillo, and businesman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer.

The boat was struck at around 5am on Monday while 22 people were aboard. Among those rescued were a 35-year-old British woman and her one-year-old baby, and Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares.

Inferno at Antiguan harbour

Falmouth harbour was ablaze in the early hours of october 3rd as antigua and barbuda were caught in the midst of a raging tropical storm….

antigua yacht crash

An inferno engulfed Falmouth Harbour, Antigua as Tropical Storm Phillipe travelled across the islands in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday 3rd). Whilst some reports claim it was instigated by lightning, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. No deaths or injuries have been reported at this moment in time. Government authorities are also reporting widespread flooding on both islands.

“First and foremost, the most important thing is that everyone is safe. No one has been hurt or injured,” Devin Joseph, Yachting and Sailing Business Development Manager, Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority tells SuperyachtNews. “The commercial building, however, has been fully destroyed, which housed the Dock Master's Office, Cloggy’s restaurant, Turtle Surf Shop, Skulduggery bar and café,  Ari fish shop, Dockside supermarket, Marina Gym, and Seabreeze bar and café.”

The building also had a BWA Yachting office on the second floor and an Access Marine office on the ground floor. “So all of those businesses that supported the yachting industry for the marina unfortunately have been completely destroyed,” adds Joseph.

Firefighters have since extinguished the blaze. But the excessively high winds caused by the storm continued to whip up the fire, spreading the flames across the marina, and making progress difficult for rescuers. An explosion caused by a propane tank at one of the restaurants also fueled the fire.

Severe heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Phillipe is also causing flooding in both Antigua and Barbuda. The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service says four to six inches of rainfall are expected over the next two days.

Both islands were under a tropical storm warning and a flash flood watch as of 4pm on Monday, but authorities have since received numerous calls for assistance from low-lying areas in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Grays Farm, Point and Cooks are the areas mainly affected at this time. Security forces are currently responding to distress calls.

The storm also raised further fears for the yachting community. Notably, government authorities previously cited that a central reason for seizing and attempting to sell Alfa Nero was that in the event of it sinking during a tropical storm or hurricane, it would block the waterways and cause an ecological disaster. This would be severely detrimental to the islands, whose economy is bolstered by the yachting community every year, but Joseph assures that no such cases have occurred.

“To be clear, the channel is completely unobstructed with no sunken yachts or boats impeding the entrance of the harbour,” he says. “All precautions to ensure the harbour is a safe haven for all vessels were taken before the arrival of the storm and no boats were damaged during the fire either.”

Whilst the costs of the damage remain unclear, Joseph maintains that the impact of the fire on Antigua and Barbuda’s yachting season is minimal. “The marina will remain fully active. I have spoken to the owners and they have already relocated to another office building on the marina,” he says. “Operations, electricity, water and fuel lines are all completely intact. There will obviously need to be repairs to the marina itself, but nothing that will prevent yachts from coming in”.

The next step is to work with the government in order to support the yachting season and ensure it continues as usual. “As for the marina, the docks and structures are still intact,” says Joesph. “There will be a big cleanup effort to make sure that everything is aesthetically to our standards. But as for operations and so forth, everything will continue as normal. The rest of the marina still offers ample services for boats, as well as plenty of restaurants and shopping opportunities for guests.”

Whilst it is unfortunate that the marina and its business partners have lost their businesses, the people of Antigua and Barbuda remain resilient in the face of adversity, adds Joseph. “We will simply rebuild and continue to provide the high standards of services and experiences Antigua is renowned to have,” he says.

“We understand that owners, captains, brokers, agents and other well-wishers are concerned, but we are still smiling and ready to welcome everyone to our vibrant yachting season.”

Rising from the Ashes Antigua Puts on Brave Face

antigua yacht crash

Putting a brave face on following a devesting fire the Antigua Yacht Club Marina is rising from the ashes.

Just months ago, fire ripped through the buildings on the dock in Falmouth Harbour Antigua. It destroyed much of them and reducing two decades of work to ash in just one night

As flames lit up the night sky, staff from Cloggy’s, the bar and restaurant at the end of the dock stood and watched the flames in despair as their restaurant burned.

antigua yacht crash

The beach bar had been the go-to place for Caribbean yachties since it opened nineteen years ago.

The flames also engulfed neighbouring establishments. These include the Skull Duggery café, Dock Master’s Office, and Dockside Liquor.

This devastating incident led to the loss of over 100 jobs dealing a severe blow to the local community and economy.

Antigua Yacht Club Marina remains resilient. It is determined to continue serving the sailing and yachting community.  Shaun Falcone said at the time, “Despite this unfortunate incident, we want to assure our valued members, patrons and the sailing community that the main marina facilities, including diesel, water, electricity and dockage, remain fully operational.”

antigua yacht crash

From pictures received today, it seems he has kept his word.  The Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting is in full swing. Photographs taken by Steve Monk of Da Gama Maritime , show the dock has been tidied up. And is looking neat and tidy.

Tables, chairs and sun umbrellas cover an area once home to shops bars and restaurants.  The ashes are gone and now charter brokers are sitting in the sun sipping beer.

It is quite a remarkable transformation said Steve Monk whose drone took to the air to obtain this exclusive shot.

He added, “Truly Antigua Yacht Club Marina is rising from the ashes.”

Video: Turquoise superyacht Go collides with Sint Maarten dock

The 77 metre superyacht Go has been filmed colliding with the wooden dock of the Sint Maarten yacht club in the Caribbean.

Onlookers filmed the flagship of Turkish yard Turquoise Yachts crash into the dock as it was leaving Simpson Bay Lagoon from its berth in Ile de Sol Marina.

The collision, which took place at around 10.15am on Wednesday morning, was caused by a computer malfunction on board, according to local newspaper The Daily Herald .

The Daily Herald reported that the yacht collided with the wooden docks twice before returning to its berth. No injuries were reported.

Sint Maarten Yacht Club general manager Michele Korteweg told The Daily Herald : “We’ve been removing all the debris and out insurance person has already been here to assess the damage.”

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

16 – 21 april, 2025, back in the 60’s….

Classic yachts in English Harbour had begun chartering and the captains and crews challenged each other to a race down to Guadeloupe at the end of the charter season. From this informal race, Antigua Sailing Week was formed in 1967, and in those days all of the yachts were classic.

Over the next 24 years…

The classic yachts were slowly outnumbered by the faster, sleeker modern racing yachts. A small number of classics still racing in 1987 found themselves grouped with cruising Class 3 which was less than ideal for these hard to manoeuvre full-keeled vessels.

And so it came…

Captains Uli Pruesse and Kenny Coombs hosted a meeting with other classic skippers onboard the magnificent schooner Aschanti of Saba and, several rums later, the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was born.
