Shovel Knight developers’ next game is a Zelda-like you play as a mouse

Mina the Hollower is inspired by the Game Boy Color era

by Ana Diaz

Ana Diaz

Yacht Club Games, the developer behind the Shovel Knight series , announced its next game at the Yacht Club Games Presents stream on Tuesday. The studio’s next title will be an original adventure inspired by the Game Boy Color. It’s called Mina the Hollower.

The game is still early in development, Yacht Club said, and the studio is seeking funding through a Kickstarter campaign that’s live now. “We want your feedback, collaboration, and support in making Mina the Hollower the best game it can possibly be,” the developers said.

The developers released a trailer alongside its Mina the Hollower reveal. In the game, you play as Mina, a mouse who fights her way through various dungeons using a whip and other items. Like Shovel Knight , Mina features an 8-bit art style — the game’s visuals look a lot like a souped-up version of the Game Boy Color game The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening from 1993. The Kickstarter page says that the team plans create a game that runs in “smooth 60 [frames-per-second] action combat.”

Yacht Club released the indie darling Shovel Knight in 2014 after a successful crowdfunding campaign. Since then, the iconic shovel-wielding knight has gone on to inspire a series of spinoffs games and sequels, and even get cameos in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate . The team announced its other upcoming title, Shovel Knight Dig , in 2019. Yacht Club’s most recently released game, Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon , was released in 2021 across multiple platforms.

Yacht Club Games reveals Mina the Hollower & accompanying Kickstarter

Mina the Hollower will be a new game from Yacht Club in the vein and aesthetic of classic Game Boy Color adventure games.

TJ Denzer

Yacht Club Games is incredibly good at channeling the old school in all of the new projects it pursues. It never ceases to inject that classic creativity in its games, even while shedding pain points of old game design. It looks to be pursuing that pedigree again with the announcement and reveal of Mina the Hollower: a top-down action adventure in the style of classic Game Boy Color games. Yacht Club will be crowdfunding this latest game on Kickstarter, starting today.

Yacht Club Games announced Mina the Hollower and its Kickstarter during the Yacht Club Games Presents event on February 1, 2022. In this homage to the Game Boy Color era, players will take on the role of the titular Mina in an 8-bit-style top-down adventure, similar to the likes of games like the original The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Oracle of Ages, and Oracle of Seasons. It’s described as a “world full of mystery and horror” as players will battle against various creatures and work their way through all sorts of spooky environments, laying various creatures to rest with a variety of weapons and gadgets.

Mina the Hollower will feature a spooky-themed top-down adventure in the vein of Game Boy Color classics, including combat, dungeon-crawling, and puzzle-solving.

Mina the Hollower oozes all of the classic aesthetic Yacht Club Games has been known to produce in beloved titles like the Shovel Knight series and the recent and rather awesome hack-and-slash side-scroller  Cyber Shadow . Of course, as always, Mina the Hollower will also have modern sensibilities, such as playing at 60 fps and other such features. However, with the Kickstarter, Yacht Club Games has made it clear that fans and backers will also play a role in helping to guide the support and direction of the game.

With the Kickstarter launched, fans and players can go back Mina the Hollower now. Stay tuned for further details on the game, such as Kickstarter updates and release dates, right here at Shacknews.

Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games has announced a brand-new title in the works called Mina The Hollower, an action adventure game with a Game Boy Color aesthetic reminiscent of old-school titles like Castlevania and The Legend of Zelda.

Yacht Club Games announced its new game during the Yacht Club Presents showcased that was teased last week. During the show, Yacht Club Games also announced that Mina the Hollower will have a Kickstarter and that those that want to contribute to the game's development can do so right now via its Kickstarter page .

According to the game's Kickstarter page, you play as Mina, an inventor who is tasked with traveling to Tenebrous Isle to fix some Spark Generators which have been destroyed in suspicious circumstances. With your Castlevania-esque whip, you'll battle monsters of varying sizes to discover the dark secrets of the island.

As with most Kickstarters, there are rewards for backers who contribute to the pot more than others. Donating $20 will get you a digital copy of the game when it releases while a sizable donation of $100 gets you a physical copy along with the chance to listen in on design meetings.

Thanks to this physical copy reward tier, we know that Yacht Club games has plans to bring Mina the Hollower to all platforms, although the developer does note that the platforms shown are "subject to change." We also have a very vague release date as rewards are expected to go out during December 2023, although it's also quite likely this is just a placeholder date.

If you're a Shovel Knight fan and were hoping that a sequel was going to be announced today, have no fear as Yacht Club Games has stated that it isn't giving up on the franchise just yet and has long-term plans in the series. It's possible that a full-blown sequel to Shovel Knight is in the works, but for now, Mina the Hollower is all the rage.

Everything we know about Mina the Hollower

We’ve had hundreds of indie games attempt to drum up support by going to crowdfunding when they couldn’t find a traditional publisher to fund their projects. Some of these turn out great, others not so great, and an unfortunately large amount don’t turn out at all. The reason for the explosion of games turning to platforms like Kickstarter in the first place can be traced back to one of the most successful games to ever utilize the platform: Shovel Knight.

Release date

Multiplayer.

After supporting the 8-bit throwback to games like Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, and Ducktales, for nearly a decade, along with several spinoff games, Yacht Club Games finally announced its second game titled Mina the Hollower. While Shovel Knight was a homage to 8-bit, NES platformers, Mina the Hollower looks to capture the essence of classic GameBoy Color titles. Just like their first game, Yacht Club is utilizing Kickstarter to get this project going, and get the community involved in the development. Before you decide if you want to help fund this project, here’s everything we know about Mina the Hollower .

  • These 10 games are so good, you’d never know they’re from Kickstarter
  • The best indie games for 2022
  • The best indie games on Nintendo Switch

According to the Kickstarter page for Mina the Hollower , the target release window for the cute indie title is set quite a way off in December 2023. However, that could easily just be a placeholder date with Yacht Club not actually intending to release the game then. What it does tell us is that we shouldn’t expect this game any time soon. Even the developers themselves admit that it will be a long wait stating, “The biggest risk is that Mina the Hollower may take longer than anticipated. We always prioritize quality, even if that means delaying a project a little until it’s ready to meet the world.”

Since the game does use Kickstarter, we can at least expect a fairly regular schedule of updates on the game’s development and progress towards an eventual release date.

Yacht Club has stated that it doesn’t have a confirmed list of platforms Mina the Hollower will be available on, possibly due to any future changes in the market between now and release. The only ones we know for sure are Mac and Linux since they were part of the stretch goals for the project that has already been passed. The original Shovel Knight came to just about everything, even the WiiU, so odds are that, at one point or another, Mina the Hollower should come to at least the major systems like PS5 , Xbox Series X /S, Switch, if not more. However, until official word is given, take that as simply highly likely speculation at this point.

While the trailer itself is almost completely focused on gameplay, the Kickstarter page has tons of additional info on the world, characters, and the story of Mina the Hollower . The titular Mina is a little mouse called a Hollower, an inventor who fights with her whip. After getting a letter from a customer and ruler of her home island named Baron Lionel, informing her that her most important invention, Spark Generators, have begun failing and that it is likely due to sabotage.

This sets Mina off on her adventure across Tenebrous Isle to figure out who — or what — is responsible.

Mina is part of an ancient group called the Hollowers who dedicate their lives to science and energy but also have the special Hollowing ability to dig and travel underground. Mina is the youngest, but also most promising Hollower. She’s known throughout the land for her Spark technology that powers the Spark Generators used by everyone. She wields the whip, Nightstar, along with other tools and weapons.

Thorne is a bat who was once Lionel’s top bodyguard before betraying him and disappearing. He now leads a group called the Shock Troopers who have begun attacking while the generators are down.

This game is very much Castlevania-inspired. The team describes it as a “Gothic Horror” and expresses that it wants to put a “modern spin on a classic source.” Outside of games, the developers list many famous literary works as inspiration for Mina the Hollower , including “ Dracula, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – and countless others.”

As a GameBoy Color inspired game, Mina the Hollower will almost exclusively be played with just a D-pad and two buttons: One used to attack and the other burrow. Normal attacks utilize your whip in whatever direction Mina is facing, but has that familiar delay Castlevania fans know all too well. There will also be a host of sidearms you can use to attack. Only one can be held at a time, but serve different purposes. The Volt Hatchet, for example, can hit multiple foes at once with its AOE attack, while the Gyro Dagger acts like a boomerang that you can whip in the air to knock it back into enemies multiple times.

The style looks very much like Link’s Awakening, only with the whipping and sub-weapon system of the classic 2D Castlevania games. While the trailer was very disjointed, we expect there to be plenty of 2D action, dungeons, bosses, and probably some light puzzle solving as well.

Burrowing is the main mechanic introduced in Mina the Hollower . Digging underground lets you avoid obstacles and enemies for traversal, as well as move much faster than above ground. It can also be used as a dodge of sorts, but since you can only stay underground for a short amount of time, you need to time it well.

Trinkets will be familiar to fans of Shovel Knight. These bits of gear offer different buffs to your moves depending on which you’ve found and equipped. Based on the trailer, it looks like only five out of 60 can be equipped at once. Some show off was the Ferry Wisp, letting you float for a short time, and a spider that shoots webs you can use as platforms to cross gaps.

Mina the Hollower will also have some light RPG mechanics, including leveling up and upgrading stats. By defeating enemies and collecting Bones, or collecting them from treasure chests, Mina will level up and can upgrade her stats, such as attack, defense, sidearms, and magic. In a small nod to souls-likes, Bones are both your XP and currency, so you will need to carefully think about how you want to spend them.

Mina the Hollower doesn’t specify being singleplayer or multiplayer right now, though it appears to be a solo experience. That said, we all thought that about Shovel Knight too, only to later get multiplayer modes for that. Based on Yacht Club’s history of adding in way more content and modes than anyone could reasonably expect, we can only say that, at launch, we don’t think there will be a multiplayer component for this game.

Again, this is very hard to predict. Based on the visible stretch goals, there doesn’t look like any DLC is coming, but there are still two unknown goals. Again looking back at Shovel Knight, we wouldn’t be surprised to get new campaigns, perhaps playing as new characters, down the line. Still, for now at least, we’re just looking at the base game. If future DLC is announced, it wouldn’t be out of character for it to be free to any backers of the game, based on how Yacht Club operated in the past.

The only way to pre-order Mina the Hollower is to back the game on Kickstarter while you can! You will need to pledge at the $20 level or higher to get a digital copy of the game on any platform you choose, but if you want the game physically you will need to shell out $100 or more. You can check out all the other rewards on the page to decide which one is most appealing. Once the campaign ends, we’ll detail here any future ways you can pre-order.

The original The Last of Us ended ambiguously, but didn't necessitate a sequel. However, Neil Druckmann and the team at Naughty Dog felt there were more stories to tell in that world, resulting in the equally impressive The Last of Us Part 2. Unlike the first game, though, the sequel left many questions unanswered that demanded at least one more installment.

Initially, the team was working on a multiplayer spinoff called The Last of Us Online, however, we now know that project has been abandoned and the team is once again focusing on single-player games. One of those games is indeed The Last of Us Part 3. While it was initially ambiguous, we can now for sure say a third chapter is on the way, but what other bits of information have we been able to scavenge while sneaking around Clickers? Activate your listen mode so you catch all the details we have on The Last of Us Part 3. Release date window

For gamers of a certain age, Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 was a landmark moment in gaming. This spy-themed shooter was the culprit behind countless sleepless nights and arguments over screen-peeking with friends. Since then, James Bond games never really hit those same highs and even disappeared for over a decade. Now, a new developer has taken up the iconic franchise to make a new 007 game, and the pairing seems almost too good to be true. IO Interactive, fresh off the stellar Hitman trilogy, revealed that it is creating a new James Bond game currently referred to by the code name of Project 007. Details are so scarce that even Bond himself would have a hard time uncovering them, but we've compiled all the intel so far on this new title. Release date speculation The only thing we know about Project 007 is that it is currently in development, but not even a window was given for when it might be finished. Given the extended length of development games have now, we would predict a release of around 2026 or 2027, but we'd love to be proven wrong and have it end up coming sooner. Platforms No platforms are announced, and unless the game takes even longer than we predict, it is safe to guess that it will at least come to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC like previous IO games. It is an independent studio, so there should be no exclusivity with this title. Trailers Project 007 - Teaser Trailer

The only trailer we have is the incredibly brief teaser from 2020. It simply shows a bullet being loaded into a gun's chamber as the iconic theme begins and we see the classic shot of looking down the barrel of a gun at the logo.

Believe it or not, it has been over a decade since the last GTA game. While tons of people are still dumping hundreds of hours into GTA Online, everyone had been (not so) patiently waiting for Rockstar to finally confirm that a new entry is in the works. Despite many leaks and rumors, the team held strong until late 2023. Now that the game is finally confirmed, we have a lot more solid ground to cover in terms of what Grand Theft Auto 6 will offer. This is going to be the biggest game of the generation, and by far the most anticipated upcoming game, so let's hotwire a car and pull off a heist to get all the information there is about GTA 6. GTA 6 release date

GTA 6 is set to release sometime in fall 2025, according to reports. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive, confirmed the launch window in a May 2024 earnings call.

Pokemon GO Players Unhappy After Raid Changes

The sims 4's 'life and death' expansion is caught between a rock and a hard place with one npc, if far cry 7's villain rumors are true, one far cry 5 mechanic's return would be perfect.

Though the Nintendo Switch already has plenty of triple-A titles under its list of playable games, many indie developers seem to have a preference of releasing their work on the portable console. One of these independent companies, namely Yacht Club Games, who is known for developing and publishing 2D side-scroll, platforming game Shovel Knight , recently announced that they are developing a new IP, which will be coming to the Switch and other platforms. The announcement came alongside the release of a trailer video of the upcoming action-adventure game title Mina the Hollower .

The Yacht Club Games development team seems to be keeping quite busy, as the company just released Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon for the Nintendo Switch last December 2021. Though it is likely that the devs will continue making more games and spin-off titles in the Shovel Knight universe, fans are likely relieved that the team is also working on something completely new. Though this is the first time that Yacht Club Games is sharing information about Mina the Hollower , interested players will likely have a lot to take in from the game's website and announcement trailer video.

RELATED: Fall Guys Is Teasing A Shovel Knight Crossover

The announcement of Mina the Hollower was part of the 3rd official indie showcase presentation shared by Yacht Club Games on February 2, 2021. Alongside updates on Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon and Cyber Shadow , the team shared details of the new game, including the gothic themes of the story, compelling anthropomorphic characters, and fast-paced battles. According to the official site, Mina the Hollower will bring a modern twist to the 8-bit pixel aesthetic that was prolific in games during the GameBoy Advance era . What's more, the trailer video showcased action-packed gameplay that will have players going through challenging obstacles, difficult stages, and larger-than-life foes.

The announcement also indicated the launch of the game's Kickstarter campaign, where interested fans can help the devs fund the title's production while continuously getting updates on its progress. With Shovel Knight also mostly funded on Kickstarter , it is not surprising for Yacht Club Games to continue relying on the fundraising platform to gather support the community. As of writing, Mina the Hollower has already reached its original goal of $311,500 USD, with more than 5,500 backers and counting.

Given just how much detail Yacht Club Games has provided fans about Mina the Hollower , interest about the video game will definitely keep growing. What's more, the pixel visuals will likely bring out nostalgic feelings for gamers who adore the classic look of video games.

Mina the Hollower is currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Yacht Club Games Goes Game Boy with Mina the Hollower

Image of Thomas Wilde

Mina the Hollower was at stealth mode at PAX West. Yacht Club Games usually has a big booth at the show, but instead, you had to make an appointment and get smuggled into a hotel room to check out Mina . They’ve been playing this one very close to the vest.

Mina is the next internally-developed project from Yacht Club Games and the follow-up to its runaway indie hit Shovel Knight . Yacht Club’s published a few other creators’ indie games, such as 2021’s Cyber Shadow , but Mina is only its second new IP.

I went into the game cold at PAX, only knowing that it was the next thing by the Shovel Knight people. It turned out to be a sort of mash-up between the early Legend of Zelda games and Castlevania , with a pixel-art Game Boy aesthetic and a sort of dark steampunk feel. Mina is neatly positioned to hit several of my weak spots at once.

yacht club games mina

You play as Mina, a mouse and genius inventor who happens to dress like a member of the Belmont family. She built a series of Spark Generators years ago for the people who lived on Tenebrous Isle, which brought a new era of prosperity to the village. She’s now returned to the Isle in response to a letter from her friend Baron Lionel, who’s informed her that someone seems to have sabotaged the Generators. When Mina arrives, the Isle is also overrun by monsters.

It’s probably easiest to call Mina a top-down dungeon crawler, much in the spirit of one of the handheld Legend of Zelda games like the original Link’s Awakening . Each level is a twisting maze of secrets, traps, treasures, and monsters with a uniquely baroque aesthetic. One of the demo stages was like a Nintendo adaptation of H.R. Giger, where you’re forced to navigate through the guts of an enormous beast.

yacht club games mina

The first thing that makes Mina tricky is that healing can be difficult to come by. Each enemy you can defeat in sequence slowly fills up Mina’s flask, which you can drink to restore her life. That ends up making your survival a question of momentum. The more enemies you can drop in a row without taking a hit, the better off you’ll be. However, most of the enemies I encountered in the two-level PAX demo were fast-moving and just durable enough that I couldn’t reliably rush them down.

Mina can defend herself with one of three weapons: a mace and chain, a pair of daggers, or a hammer with an explosive head. More importantly, she can burrow into the ground for short periods, which serves as both an escape method and a way to circumvent certain obstacles. If you come up underneath certain objects like boulders, Mina will pick them up so you can throw them at a nearby monster for high damage.

As you defeat monsters and smash up your environment, you collect bones to use as a currency, which you can spend to upgrade Mina’s gear. She’s still got a number of underground labs scattered throughout the Isle.

You can duck into one to restore her health, change her active weapon, or sort through any of a wide variety of trinkets you’ll find over the course of the game. Some of the trinkets are handy but unexciting, like a defensive bonus. Others are absolute game-changers, like the one that lets Mina drop a bomb whenever she stops burrowing.

yacht club games mina

Even with all of that, I wasn’t expecting that Mina would be as much of a challenge as it is. The relatively scarce healing can be an issue, so both of the levels I played at PAX turned into a sort of endurance challenge. You can restore your health at any of Mina’s labs, but it also causes all the nearby monsters to respawn.

Mina shares Shovel Knight ’s habit of making many of its individual rooms into a sort of mechanical puzzle, where it’s not always obvious how to get from point A to B with the tools and skills you’ve got available at the time. The first trick is figuring out what you’re meant to do; the second is pure execution.

You can always burrow to trigger a short invincibility window, which can give you a useful edge against certain monsters but that doesn’t help if you need to bridge a chasm. Mina can only stay underground for a few seconds, too, and it’s really easy to pop back up in a bad position.

yacht club games mina

This was one of a few different indie games I saw at PAX West that were trading on the old Game Boy aesthetic, aside from a couple of off-site games like Draco & the Seven Sea Scales . Mina makes the most of its deliberately limited color palette and pairs it with a chiptune soundtrack by Jake Kaufman ( Crypt of the Necrodancer, Cyber Shadow, Shovel Knight Dig ).

Like Shovel Knight , Mina is sort of what you had in your mind’s eye when you were playing 8-bit games back in the day, but it’s trading on games like Link’s Awakening instead. It’s tricky but instantly playable, and my 45-minute session seemed to pass in seconds.

Mina the Hollower has currently been announced for Steam. Yacht Club Games plans to give it the “ Shovel Knight treatment,” however, which means Mina should eventually be ported to every platform under the sun. It’s also slated to receive a physical release, upon its arrival at a currently-undetermined point in 2024.
