The Windrifter Resort Association is a not-for-profit organization that is member owned and member governed.  The governing Board of Directors is a group of Windrifter members elected by Windrifter members.  The Board is tasked with overseeing finances,  formulating policies and procedures for the resort and its members.  Most importantly, the Board of Directors and resort manager work closely to ensure our founders’ original promise of an affordable vacation remains intact.

As a not- for-profit, every penny brought in by annual maintenance and reserve fees goes back into the upkeep of the properties.  These funds provide staff wages, property maintenance, services and amenities that are unique and relevant to our members.

The biggest factor helping our members have an affordable vacation is each of our units is designed to be beneficial for a longer term stay. Not only is there the living areas in each unit to accommodate up to a minimum of 4 guests per unit, but there is a full kitchen in every unit, as well. The cost of eating out on vacation can be prohibitive. By choosing to eat in, you have the opportunity to save some of that cost to participate in other activities that may not have been affordable by eating out all the time.

Without the people that come here year after year, The Windrifter Resort is just a collection of buildings. It is the people that make it a community. Many of our members boast of long friendships forged over the years of their Windrifter vacations. And they are excited to make new friendships when new members join the family.

Your Windrifter vacation is an investment that pays dividends each year in the form of lasting memories, friendships, and traditions. We always love our times at Windrifter We love the Windrifter. We enjoy smaller resorts with charm and comfort and the Windrifter fits that bill. We could not control the weather but we did control our mood! We had such a lovely view from our studio. Not only are you at the golf course, but you have beautiful sunsets, trees and geese to gaze upon. The unit is small but adequate. We had meals in and watched free movies provided by the resort. I am guessing here that the closest public beach on the Lake is at least a mile away. I would not walk it. Bob

Overall rating

We stayed overnight during June, 2019 and have previously stayed here on two occasions. The price was reasonable. The location is about a mile and half from the center of Wolfeboro commercial/tourist area. Our two room suite was located on the third floor and offered a small outside sitting area on the balcony One room had a queen size bed and the other room had two mini sofas and an eating area. The room did provide us with a stove, a refrigerator and about a 30 inch color TV in each of the two rooms. One thing I will mention is the floor of our room had low and high points. It is an old building and this added to the charm. There was amble daylight in the room which was helped by a skylight in each room. We interacted with staff members Diane and Gordon and they were very nice and accommodating.

DO NOT STAY HERE. 1. No sleep - paper thin ceiling & walls, so hear everything (footsteps, drawers opening & closing, faucet, toilet, etc.) from neighbors. 2. Dirty, dated rooms. 3. See-through curtains that don't block any light, and bed facing that double door letting in all light. 4. Zero service (no one answered or called back) when calling all numbers & extensions provided about the issues.

We only stayed one night, but here's the short and sweet: The biggest benefit of this "resort" is 4 (maybe more) boat slips are available on Lake Winnipesaukee at the Windrifter Yacht club and marina, which is 5 minutes down the road. Boom! Not many hotels can match that. We stayed in a studio in one of the outbuildings. It was a cute room with sliders to a back porch, a tiny kitchen, and tiny bathroom. It says it sleeps 4 in the small Murphy bed and pull out couch. I'd recommend no more than 2 adults for this room. Wifi was great and the one employee I spoke with was super friendly. Parking was superb, steps away from the door, although the lot could use a sweep so I'm not tracking sand and gravel into the room. It was quiet, being set back from the road. Everything was clean. Certain things were updated a while ago, obviously using the cheapest materials. The beds were reasonably comfortable. The AC was very powerful. I woke up in the middle of the night freezing in August. No place is perfect, but here are the downsides:The room had a weird chemical smell to it, and it was fairly strong throughout our stay. My wife thought it smelled like this was a smoking room for many, many years. There were a couple privacy issues, such as the window in the bathroom was 6 inches from the toilet and the hastilly mounted plastic mini blinds (that still had the tags on it) were too wide for the window opening, resulting in a gap at the bottom. Anyone walking by the window could see you using the toilet. It is what it is. This place is so old, it will never be a modern resort without completely knocking it down and rebuilding. The indoor pool area was ok. Plenty of towels were available. The pool was a salt water pool that was clean. The pool house was hot and musty because you weren't allowed to open a window or prop a door to ventilate it a bit. Pool rules were absurd. No food,.No drinks of any kind and certainly, no alcohol around the pool or "You'll be asked to leave" This is just unacceptable. I cant bring a bottle of water to the pool? Although we didnt trade our timeshare here, this is an RCI resort. I would recommend owners do some research before choosing this resort.

The ladies at the front desk are not helpful and rude. you will also need to handover your drivers license for them to hold onto if you plan on going for a swim in their pool which is under lock and key; even though they already have a copy and all of your personal information on file. Walls are also paper thin and you can hear everything above and on both sides of you. The bed is small and not comfortable, they don't even have comforters. Not happy with my stay or the ride office ladies

Time share exchange. Will never do again. As we went there towards the end of our week we were disappointed for the two nights we were there. First having been near the office we had to hear talking until they closed and the vacuum when they were cleaning up. I would not vacuum at 9:45p with a place full of people. To make matters worse our room was street side and all night heard cars and trucks up and down which the nights sleep was restless. We found a pair of a previous owners lady stockings/pull socks near the electrical outlet in the bedroom. If we saw this how could this be missed if they cleaned? Exchange company states there is a full bath. There was only a stand in shower and it was small. Walls were bowed and floor slanted. Fireplace was boarded up. Can tell this was an old house they decided to turn over to a "so called resort". States kitchen, but that is not the case. Not even a true kitchenette as the fridge was in the living room. 1970s furniture. We were going to get food and cook there for one night, but everything was dirty. As we are experienced timeshare holders I would not recommend this to anyone. Room Tip: Maybe the room above the office should not be there. Between traffic and listening to conversations... Stayed only one night. Doing a quick round trip to pick up a grandchild from camp. It's a bit dated and the room we were in could use a freshener. It was a 2 room 'suite' with a small kitchen set up. Not what we needed but it was available. Very small bath, king bed, rug was stained, tv in both rooms, adequate parking. Unable to comment on it as a 'resort' as we were only there to sleep one night. We never viewed most of the facility. We were on the second floor, front of the building. If noise is a big concern there is street traffic noise.

Very Nice Country Inn. I don't think I would call it a resort. A little dated, but clean and very comfortable. Staff very pleasant. Heated pool open until 10 pm. Maid service costs $25/day extra, or you can do it yourself. Rooms are large with a kitchenette. Nice size balcony with golf course views available.

Indoor Heated Pool

Really lovely stay at the Windrifter. It was rustic and a bit dated, but we had a lovely evening. Our room featured a king size bed and full bathroom, plus a hallway and a full living room (couch, loveseat, table for four plus) and a full kitchen - full sized fridge, oven, etc. It isn't the Ritz Carlton, but for the price it was excellent. Both rooms have flat screen HD TV's with built in DVD players. WiFi worked well. We didn't get to utilize the indoor pool but it looked nice. They had plenty of opportunities to connect with stuff to do, but we were enamored to be in our normal summer town during the winter so that was enough for us. There is no elevator and no baggage carts, so getting all our stuff in and out was a haul. That being said, we overpack. There was no shampoo and conditioner, which was weird, although we didn't ask either so it is distinctly possible it was available upon request. Resort is probably giving it all the best of it but its a small town, and if you are looking for a clean, quiet and cheap place to stay, this worked great for us. Again, it was offseason, but we were impressed enough that we called an audible and instead of going out to dinner we got takeaway and snuggled in. Great time, we would absolutely stay at the Windrifter if and when we are at the Lake not at the peak of the season. Thanks for a great night.

This place is really low end. Not a resort by any stretch of the imagination. The carpets are stained and smell like mold. The housekeeper never showed up to replace towels or anything else. There is a tiny bar of soap provided so don't forget your shampoo, conditioner, etc. Another review indicates recent renovations, I am not sure what those might be. The guest room doors and furniture are old and dirty, the door locks are at least thirty years old as are the curtains.

Don't waste your money. You would be better off staying in the comfort of your own home. The worst place I have ever stayed. I would hate for our experience to be yours. The front desk was not helpful. The internet they offer is like dial up or no reception at all. The bed makes so much noise it keeps you awake all night. It was so uncomfortable I woke up with a back ache and shoulder ache. You had to walk around the room bent over so you would not bang your head on the ceiling. You also had to bend over as you walked sideways around the bed. You had to run the water in the bathroom for 20 minutes for the hot water to reach the phone both sized shower. We had the place reserved for 7 days. We only lasted 3 days.

The Thirtieth Honolulu Race set several new records, though not including speed! It had the largest fleet, probably the finest fleet, and the largest foreign entry list.

The start, west of Point Fermin, was in little wind, which quickly turned to a fresh northwest breeze and by morning roll call from uss PRAIRIE, record first-day runs were posted; some over 200 miles. Considering that the first day is only 19 hours, that’s a record. Two boats, NIAD and TAHUNA dropped out off of Catalina with rigging failures.

After three fast days, the high expanded over the rhumb line and our fleet ground to a halt. some of the fleet gambled and sailed into the high where they spent some wearisome days. A few fell off to the south and caught wind.

First-to-finish was DRIFTER, skippered by Harry C. Moloscho with an elapsed time of 11 days, 18 hrs., 1 min. and 4 sec.

Navy participation with the Escort during the first half of the race was very gratifying. Coast Guard Communications station honolulu took over roll call after uss PRAIRIE went into port. The navy Marine Corps Mars radio system forwarded the roll call and handicap reports both to the mainland and island stations. Though a slow race, enthusiasm remained high and another record was broken — the Trophy Dinner was attended by 1,500 people. At the Dinner, the true spirit of international goodwill was exhibited between the crews of ARRIBA, MIYAKADORI, HMCs ORIOLE and others with toasts presented at each table. Just after the floor show of the dinner, Bill Nickerson’s NIMBLE docked as “Tail-end Charlie.”

Outstanding in the memory of your Commodore, is the cooperation and involvement of so many members of Transpac as well as the Honolulu Committee, who make this race successful and such a pleasure to both participate in and to administer.

High seas drifter: The code zero solution

A versatile, light-air sail can keep a heavy-displacement rig moving, or drifting under control, even in a breeze just two knots beyond dead calm. A 100 percent, bi-radial cut, drifter does the job on our Tayana 37 cutter Anna — it’s a lightweight headsail, constructed of 1.5-oz nylon and can be used on the open ocean or along protected coastlines. Upwind, downwind, any time the air gets light.

When our heavier, 9-oz Dacron cruising sails stall out, too heavy to be effective in much less than five knots of breeze, the drifter goes to work; it will fill and hold its shape in the slightest wind. And it’s surprisingly effective over a large range of wind angles: from 45° to 180° off the wind, close hauled to dead downwind.

In very light air, our drifter is certainly our most versatile sail. It can work downwind, as one element in a double-headsail setup (either with or without the addition of the mainsail), and it can work, capably, all by itself. For upwind work, it may be combined with mainsail or mainsail and staysail. And, once again, it can work quite effectively on its own.

With a moderately-sized drifter, the total square footage of the sail plan can be adjusted effectively, in increments. The drifter also has the ability to drive the boat on any point of sail — not just a limited reach — and this is, in our opinion, the biggest draw over that of a large asymmetrical spinnaker (which may be two to three times the size of our drifter and more powerful on a reach, but not nearly as versatile, overall).

A drifter can simply hank on to a headstay without an existing furler. A Solent stay can also be rigged to accommodate a second hanked-on headsail. Our preference was to rig an endless-line, code-zero type furler to handle the job of flying the drifter. Since the drifter has its own built-in stay, of low-stretch Spectra sewn into the luff, all we needed were two additional fittings to rig the drifter: a fitting to accommodate the external block and Spectra halyard, positioned about one foot below the masthead. And a strong padeye fitting, positioned toward the forward end of the the bowsprit, for attaching the tack of the flying drifter.

The code zero furler We chose the Facnor FX-1500 series, code zero furler, because it is well-engineered, proven technology. In open-ocean conditions, or in gusty channels, straits and sounds, our Facnor code zero furler can be handled by one person, with very little effort. This can be done from anywhere on deck or from the ever-popular safety of the cockpit.

The square footage of the sail will determine the size of the furler (or model number) required for safe working loads. On Anna , the drifter is 450 square feet (about the same size as our heavier 100-percent headsail). The Facnor FX-1500 is rated for up to 590 square feet of sail area, and so it can handle the task with ease. It affords one-handed operation, even under loads imposed by a fresh breeze.

The component parts (both the furling drum and the head swivel) are precision engineered. They are constructed of anodized aluminum and stainless steel. The clever design of the furling drum allows for the endless furling line to remain conveniently in place, on deck, after the sail and furler have been stowed away. The drum, which is grooved, grips the endless furler line without slippage; yet its friction isn’t excessive.

The setup is quick and simple. Quick-release, stainless snap-shackles are built into the head swivel and furler-drum component parts, so the rig is easily connected, disconnected, raised or dropped, all under full control. When the drifter is furled, it snakes down and coils compactly onto the deck or directly into a bag, without the drama of the sail flailing around and chafing on deck, or accidentally slipping over the side into the water.

Drifting in the shipping lanes The ability to move along on any point of sail, in light air, helps to reduce the risk of collision with commercial traffic that may be restricted to the shipping lanes. Large containerships, cruise ships, tankers, ferries and working tugs are all required to stay within the inbound and outbound vessel-traffic control lanes, as they make their way to and from busy seaports. A sailing vessel is not restricted to the confines of the shipping lanes, and typically tries to avoid being in them when traffic is present. But we sometimes need to cross those lanes; and the quicker the better.

It only takes about five minutes for a loaded containership, moving at 24 knots, to cover two nautical miles. It seems like we have plenty of time to get out of their way when we see them off in the distance. In reality, though, a sailboat drifting in very light air — say, a three-knot breeze — will move only about as far as, say, the length of one of these mega-ships by the time they reach us. Not very far, really.

If a drifter can give us the ability to change our course and keep moving (without a lot of fuss) in any direction, that’s a sail worth having in the inventory.

A minimalist, light-air strategy Our most basic light-air strategy is to fly our code-zero type drifter. Effective on any point of sail between 45° and 180° off the wind, it’s a no-nonsense, light-air solution that is capable of moving us along at about one half of the apparent wind speed, or better, when the breeze is less than eight knots apparent.

We’re not particularly concerned about moving fast in light air. We simply want forward progress and directional stability. In fact, we’re happy to move along on an ocean passage at four to five knots. And in very light air, moving at two to three knots works for us, too, until the breeze picks up.

A 1.5-oz nylon drifter is durable enough for use on the open ocean, but works for coastal or inland cruising as well. It will fill and maintain a nice shape in as little as two knots of breeze. The only downside to nylon is UV degradation. So, when not in use, it should be covered with a protective sleeve. We simply drop, bag and stow the sail after conditions have shifted to a steady, moderate breeze; when our heavier, more rugged, Dacron cruising sails can take over.

Rigging a code-zero type furler Code zero furlers are typically located just forward of the fixed headstay. A sloop rig, without a retractable bowsprit, may fabricate a fitting just forward of the headstay; for instance, at the end of a sturdy bow roller. But that isn’t a likely option for a true cutter rig, where bow rollers are located well aft of the headstay, at the leading edge of the deck. This would likely result in the loss of too much sail area for the drifter to be effective.

The code-zero setup on Anna is somewhat nontraditional. We decided to rig our flying, code zero — with its own built-in Spectra stay — slightly inboard of the fixed headstay; just nine inches aft of the cranse collar on the bowsprit. This leaves just enough room for the furled drifter to clear the larger Profurl drum which resides on the headstay.

In our opinion, the tradeoff of positioning the code zero, just aft of the headstay, but still well forward of the leading edge of deck, was negligible: it represented the loss of perhaps 70 square feet of drifter area. If the addition of that amount of square footage had been really important to us, we could have designed and fabricated a strong fitting forward of the cranse collar. But loads imposed beyond the cranse collar would not have been well-supported without additional stays; and we simply didn’t want to add complexity to an otherwise simple rig. By positioning the code zero furler slightly aft of the cranse collar, where the bowsprit is thicker and stronger, we could reduce threats to the integrity of the structure, while under a load.

Another advantage of rigging the code zero where we did, is that we could avoid hanging off the end of the bowsprit to attach or to detach the drifter. In sloppy seas, this would add an extra margin of comfort and safety.

A consideration of wind-loads We fabricated a strong fitting that would take advantage of spreading the imposed loads over the thickest, strongest section of the bowsprit aft of the cranse collar. Since we couldn’t calculate the exact stress loads on the bowsprit, where it wasn’t supported by stays at the cranse collar, we took a common-sense, educated-guess approach and overbuilt the fitting to give us an added safety factor.

We figured that a beefy, stainless fitting, measuring about 6 inches in width and 3/16-inch in thickness, with a padeye welded to its top surface would work well. The loads imposed by the drifter would first be transferred to this stainless fitting and then spread out over a somewhat larger and stronger cross section of the bowsprit. It would be more effective than through-bolting a padeye and a backing plate. Essentially, our fitting would fully encompass a section of the vertically laminated bowsprit, near the cranse collar, and avoid drilling unnecessary holes into the laminate.

We expected, occasionally, to see higher wind gusts and corresponding forces when using our drifter setup, especially if going towards weather. We’ve since used our drifter in gusting conditions and believe that the extra loads imposed on our bowsprit are, in fact, adequately supported by our reinforced fitting.

The force of the wind on a sail is an easy calculation: WL = SA x V2 x 0.00431 where, WL = wind load in pounds SA = sail area in square feet V = wind velocity in knots

This gave us a starting point for our educated guess as to the safe working load that could be transferred to an unsupported section of the bowsprit, that is, the section aft of the cranse collar, and before the deck.

Using this formula, we can determine that the forces transferred to a deck, bowsprit or masthead fitting, in light air conditions — say, eight knots apparent — will not be an issue. With winds up to 16 knots, the loads are still rather small. If the fitting is beefy and able to spread the load over an area of at least a few inches, in the direction of the pulling force, then the loads imposed by occasional, unsustained gusts shouldn’t present a problem. If sustained, high winds are expected, then obviously a drifter is the wrong sail to be flying, and we would roll it up in favor of our heavier Dacron, cruising sails.

Wind strength and corresponding forces are exponential. A drifter with a total area of 450 square feet, for example, will exert the following loads:

A light-air, code zero will typically fly in apparent winds of about eight knots or less. In these conditions the loads are minimal, especially downwind. But if a squall or heavy gust catches the sail before you can hand it, the load increases, significantly. So it made sense for us to design a stout setup, as we planned to use our drifter in areas where squalls were likely to be encountered.

The endless-loop setup The endless-loop (or continuous-line) setup for the Facnor FX-1500 uses 6-mm line that is twice the length of the distance from the furler drum to the location where you’ll be furling the line; most likely the cockpit. The line should be run through the path of the lead blocks or bullseyes for the exact length, and then a little extra should be added to compensate for the continuous-line splice. Attaching the last block in the setup to a bungee cord will give the endless loop the right amount of tension on the furler drum. It will also allow you to stop the line from running free, after the sail is furled, by providing enough slack in the line, for example, to take a wrap around a nearby cleat, which will add friction to the line and keep the sail from accidentally unfurling.

The reduced-volume, end-to-end splice The continuous-line, end-to-end splice, must pass through the groove in the furler drum without excessive friction. And since the splice isn’t ever under a tremendous load in this application, a reduced-volume endless-loop splice is acceptable. The reduced-volume splice is not as strong as a traditional end-to-end splice, but it is strong enough for continuous-line furler applications.

Once the lead from the furling drum to the cockpit has been laid out, and the number of bullseyes or blocks required for a fair lead are known, they can be pre-threaded onto the furling line before the splice is made. Otherwise, small snatch blocks will need to be used to guide the continuous line, since they can be opened easily to accept the line and then snapped closed, once the line has been passed through.

Since the Facnor code zero furler allows a continuous line to be easily looped around the drum, or removed from the drum, at will, the furling-line setup can remain in place on deck whenever the sail and furler are stowed away. Next time you bring out the drifter, simply loop the continuous furling line around the drum and you’re good to go. Additionally, we run the drifter’s own set of light-weight sheets through the same large rail blocks that we use for the heavy-weight jib; these sheets share the same block and can remain in place, ready for use.

Costs The cost of the code zero furler, size of the lead blocks and length of furling line will depend on a few factors: the size of the sail; the manufacturer of the furler; and the length of the run from the furling drum to the cockpit.

In our setup, a Facnor FX-1500 model, code zero furler fit the bill. The cost was under $1,000 for everything excluding the drifter. A 450-square-foot, 1.5-oz nylon, bi-radial cut drifter is probably one of the less expensive sails in the inventory.

The cost will vary, depending upon the sail loft used. If you already have a hank-on drifter, it can be converted. If the halyard is also Spectra, then sag will be minimal — a necessity for good upwind performance.

Rich and Cat Ian-Frese have been living aboard, refitting and cruising around the NE Pacific Ocean basin, on Anna, since 2000. They plan to leave Seattle and head in the general direction of South America in 2011.

The 5 tragic minutes that sank a superyacht

PORTICELLO, Italy — Survivors of a storm that sank a superyacht off Sicily recounted their ordeal to one of the doctors who rushed to their aid, with some saying it took mere minutes for the 180-foot ship to go down. 

Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News on the phone Thursday that he arrived in the seaside village of Porticello before dawn Monday, about an hour after the $40 million Bayesian sank in the violent and sudden storm.   

Of the 22 people onboard, 15 survived despite storm conditions and darkness, climbing onto a lifeboat before being rescued by a nearby sailboat. The crew members have made no public statements so far, though some have been interviewed by investigators.

“They told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down,” Genco said, recounting what the survivors told him. “All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries,” he said. 

It appears they had just minutes to abandon the sinking ship, Genco said. 

“They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there,” he said, “And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes.”

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, the Bayesian's shipbuilder, told Sky News that there were no flaws with the design or construction of the yacht. He said their structure and keel made boats like that “unsinkable bodies.”

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he disavowed responsibility, blaming instead the actions of the crew. “Mistakes were made,” he said. 

Genco said one of his colleagues who arrived at the scene before him initially thought that only three people survived, but the coast guard reported there were other survivors and more emergency services were called in. 

When Genco arrived, he found scenes of panic and despair. 

“Unfortunately, we are used to such panic scenes because we are used to the shipwrecks that happen on Lampedusa ,” Genco said, referring to the island southwest of Sicily, where the wreckage of boats carrying migrants on the sea journey from North Africa to Italy are often found . 

Six of the passengers were declared missing Monday, and by Thursday, the bodies of five had been recovered from the wreck , some 160 feet underwater.

Among those who survived is Angela Bacares, wife of the British tech mogul Mike Lynch , whose body was recovered Thursday. 

Another survivor has been identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35. She told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled into safety.

Dr. Domenico Cipolla at the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo is also part of a team of medical professionals treating the shipwreck survivors. He told the BBC on Wednesday that Emsley and her daughter, as well as the father of the child, who Cipolla said also survived, are continuing to receive psychological help. 

“Psychological support was constant and is constant even today, because basically it is the wounds of the soul that are the most in need of healing in these cases,” Cipolla said.

Genco also told NBC News that he was especially concerned about the child. “She did not understand anything. She was soaking wet and cold,” he said. 

Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, a yacht that was anchored near the Bayesian, said by phone Wednesday that he saw a thunderstorm come in at around 4 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Monday, followed by what looked like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms over water. 

The International Centre for Waterspout Research noted on X that there was a “waterspout outbreak” off Italy on Monday, the day the Bayesian sank. 

“I turned on the engine and made maneuvers so that we wouldn’t collide with the Bayesian, which was anchored about 100 meters from us,” Borner said. “Then all of a sudden it disappeared. Then the wind calmed down, we looked around and saw a red flare.”

Borner said he got into his boat’s tender and saw a life raft with 15 people on it. Members of the crew were administering first aid. 

“I don’t know why it sank so quickly, but it may have something to do with the mast which was incredibly long,” he said. Questions have been raised about whether the mast was to blame for the accident as tall masts, even with the sails down, have more surface area exposed to the wind, which can contribute to tipping a vessel in a storm.

The CCTV footage that emerged Tuesday showed the yacht’s 250-foot mast, believed to be one of the tallest aluminum sailing masts in the world, lashed by the storm as it appears to tilt to one side before disappearing.

The Bayesian, an award-winning superyacht, sank during bad weather off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed divers had found the bodies of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, and one of Mr Lynch's lawyers Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda.

Recaldo Thomas, the on-board chef, was the first to be confirmed dead earlier this week.

Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued along with 14 others - including Charlotte Golunski, a mother who told la Repubblica she held her one-year-old baby above the waves to save her from drowning.

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is missing, but believed to be the seventh body recovered from the wreckage on Friday.

But what do we know about the ship?

The British-flagged 56-metre ship - previously called the Salute - was built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, and refitted in 2020.

Its 72-metre mast was the world's tallest aluminium mast, and the second-tallest overall. The yacht could reach a maximum speed of 15 knots and weighed 543 tonnes.

The French design house Remi Tessier fitted out the Japanese-style interior decor, with touches of light and dark beige and dark wood furnishings, as well as a teak deck.

It won the best exterior styling at The World Superyacht Awards in 2009, and best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards 2008.

It had six guest bedrooms - one master, three doubles, and two twins - holding 12 people, and could carry another 10 crew members.

Pictures show air conditioning units in several of the bedrooms, which could counter expert claims open windows may have caused water to rush in and tip the boat over faster.

Shipspotting.com says it was owned by a firm called Revtom Limited. Mike Lynch's wife, Ms Bacares, is named as the sole shareholder of the firm on company documents.

A Waterspout Was Seen When a Luxury Yacht Sank. What Is It?

Witnesses reported seeing the tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian, a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.

Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.

Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .

While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .

Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.

How common are waterspouts?

Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.

“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.

What may have happened?

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.

While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.

Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.

“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.

He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Body of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch recovered from yacht, Italian official says, as divers search for his daughter

T he body of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been recovered from the sunken Bayesian superyacht, Italian interior ministry official Massimo Mariani told Reuters Thursday.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still missing, Mariani said, and divers are still searching the area where the vessel sank.

Earlier Thursday, a fifth body was brought to shore from the wreck of the boat, which sank earlier in the week. A CNN team on the ground saw Italian authorities move the body from a rescue boat to ambulances at the Sicilian port of Porticello.

The British-flagged vessel, with 22 passengers and crew members on board, rapidly sank after its mast, one of the world’s tallest, broke in half during a violent storm. Fifteen people were rescued on Monday and one body was recovered – thought to be that of the onboard chef Recaldo Thomas. Six others were initially reported missing.

As investigators probe the cause of the wreck, the CEO of the firm that owns the vessel’s manufacturer has detailed how a litany of avoidable “mistakes” may have contributed to the ship sinking.

Once they became aware of the bad weather, the ship’s crew should have locked down the hull, closed all doors and hatches and made all guests congregate in the ship’s assembly point, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

“Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. All it took was a 40-degree tilt and those in the cabin found themselves with the door above. Can you imagine a 60-70 year old man climbing out?” he said.

In a separate interview with Sky News, Costantino said vessels like the Bayesian are “safest in the most absolute sense” ought to have been “unsinkable.”

“First of all, because they have very little surface compared to a yacht facing into the wind. Second, with the structure of the drift keel, they become unsinkable bodies,” he said.

Constantino said he was in a state of “sadness and disbelief” since learning that the Bayesian – built in 2008 by the Italian company Perini Navi, which was acquired by The Italian Sea Group in 2021 – sank early Monday.

The six individuals reported missing were Lynch and his daughter; Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer; prominent American lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Italian authorities are not yet disclosing the names of all those whose bodies have been brought ashore. This is likely because in Italy, a person close to the deceased must formally identify the body, before a coroner or the prosecutor’s office confirms this.

Given that the sinking of the Bayesian is under criminal investigation, formal identifications will likely come from the prosecutor’s office. Italy’s civil protection agencies do not have the authority to confirm victims’ identities.

Since the boat sank, emergency crews have battled difficult conditions to enter the wreck, which is around 50 meters underwater (approximately 150 feet.) Divers have had around only 12 minutes to reach and explore the site before having to resurface.

Initial reports suggest a small  waterspout , which developed over the area the boat was in Siciliy on Monday morning, could have been behind the yacht’s sinking.

Four days in, Italian authorities are still trying to understand how the 56-meter (184-foot) yacht sank so quickly. Separately, the United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has also opened an investigation, saying on Wednesday that it would deploy a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment of the scene.

CCTV shows footage of sinking

Waterspouts, a type of tornado, are spinning columns of air that form over water, or move from land out to water. They are often accompanied by  high winds, high seas, hail and dangerous lightning . While they are most common over tropical oceans, they can form almost anywhere. Waterspouts in Sicily, however are rare.

Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, stressed that there was no indication that the design or construction of the boat was at fault in the ship’s sinking. “This episode sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact,” he said.

Unverified security camera footage released on Wednesday appears to have shown the moments that the tornado sank the yacht. As rain pelted down on the port, a grainy video shows the boat being battered by the storm, rocking violently from side to side before capsizing.

One witness, the owner of a villa looking out to where the Bayesian was anchored, said that after news of the sinking yacht emerged, he watched back his CCTV footage, where the boat could be seen sinking.

“In just 60 seconds, you can see the ship disappear,” he told Italian outlet ANSA. “You can see clearly what’s happening. There was nothing that could be done for the vessel. It disappeared in a very short time.”

New York Yacht Club wins third consecutive Hinman Masters Trophy

Twenty-five short-course races in three days in winds that rarely topped 10 knots are more than enough to fray the nerves of the most experienced and tranquil sailor. But when it came down to brass tacks on the final day of the  Hinman Masters Team Race , held this past weekend at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, R.I., the key was to forget what was on the line and all the hard work required to get to that point and stay calm. “When you’re thinking about that kind of a situation, where everybody’s finishing at the same time in an important race, you’re really trying to relax and just make your boat stay in the right spot, be legal, not foul, and get across the line in front of the competition,” says Brian Doyle (above, center), who led the host New York Yacht Club to its third consecutive win. “When it’s that close, and everyone’s shooting the line, you never know how the results are going to come out. But we came out on top by inches.”

The race Doyle references was sailed earlier today between Southern Yacht Club and New York Yacht Club. After three grueling round robins among all eight teams and going into a mini round robin among the top four teams, Southern and New York were tied at the sharp end of the leaderboard with 17 points apiece. In this race, the advantage repeatedly shifted between the two teams. As all six boats approached the finish line, it was impossible to tell which team had the edge. The race turned on the battle for fifth place, which was ultimately decided within feet of the finish line. While each team still had two races remaining, the odds for the overall win had tipped decidedly in favor of the New York Yacht Club, which secured the victory by splitting its final two races. Southern Yacht Club finished second—on the podium for the fifth straight year. Eastport Yacht Club took third and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club finished fourth.

The New York Yacht Club helped usher in a new era of adult team racing with the creation of the  New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Commodore George R. Hinman Masters Trophy  in 2000. That race, which requires skippers to be at least 45 years of age and crew to be over 40, was soon followed by the  New York Yacht Club Invitational Team Race Regatta for the Morgan Cup , an all-ages event, in 2003 and, in 2010, the  New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race Regatta , which mandates skippers be at least 60 years of age and crew at least 50. The three team races are traditionally held over consecutive weekends in August at the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court, using the Club’s fleet of 22 Sonar keelboats, and annually attract some of the best adult team racers in the United States and Europe. New York Yacht Club Regatta Association sponsors for 2024 include  Helly Hansen ,  Peters & May ,  Hammetts Hotel  and  Safe Harbor Marinas .

To a spectator, team racing can seem loud and contentious, which is at least partially due to the quantity of starts, mark roundings and finishes that go into an average day. There’s simply a lot more racing, in tight quarters, on short courses, than in a typical fleet-race regatta. For the victorious New York Yacht Club team, however, the key to success lay in familiarity and quiet.

“Our team’s been sailing together for several years, and we work really well together,” says Doyle. “We know what each other’s going to do. There’s not a lot of conversation between boats or even on the boats. We’re just boathandling well and consistently making moves to move up our teammates. And with that kind of teamwork, it works out well in the end.”

Of the 13 sailors who raced on Doyle’s squad this year, six raced together in the previous three editions of the Hinman Masters while another three sailed two of the previous three years. That experience and trust was essential for a regatta with predominantly light and variable winds.

“No win was ever secure, because as soon as you turned downwind, anything could happen,” says Doyle. “[On the final day] we had the wind coming over Goat Island, which made it even more tenuous, puffy and shifty all the way down the run. It didn’t matter if you were 1-2-3 [at the top mark], you could get overtaken.”

With the win, its ninth in the 25-year-history of the regatta, the New York Yacht Club widened its commanding lead in the overall win column. Southern stands second, with four. But the competition this year was as close as ever, a testament to the continued interest in this discipline and the growing collective skill level of the competitors.

“Adult team racing, though 25 years of the Hinman Masters, has grown substantially,” says Doyle. “It’s really exciting. There’s more and more clubs now with fleets of boats, particularly Sonars, which is great, because they maneuver well and they’re great for team racing. We just heard that some more yacht clubs are purchasing fleets this year, so adult team racing is going to continue to grow.”

The New York Yacht Club’s 2024 team racing schedule will conclude with the  New York Yacht Club Grandmasters Team Race , which starts on Friday, August 23, and runs through Sunday. Ten teams are scheduled to participate in this event, which mandates that skippers be at least 60 years of age and crew 50 or older.
