Crew member on tech tycoon mike lynch’s bayesian yacht tells of being thrown into water.
ROME – A crew member on Mike Lynch’s yacht has spoken of being thrown into the water and efforts to rescue passengers as a storm sank the vessel off Sicily this month, in a disaster that killed the British tech tycoon and six other people.
Matthew Griffiths, who was on watch duty on the night of the tragedy, told investigators that the crew members did everything they could to save those on board the Bayesian, according to comments reported by Italian news agency Ansa.
Griffiths, the boat’s captain James Cutfield , and ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton have been placed under investigation by the Italian authorities for potential manslaughter and shipwreck. Being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will follow.
“I woke up the captain when the wind was at 23 mph. He gave orders to wake everyone else,” Ansa quoted Griffiths as saying.
“The ship tilted and we were thrown into the water. Then we managed to get back up and tried to rescue those we could,” he added, describing the events of the early hours of Aug. 19, when the Bayesian had been anchored off the Sicilian port of Porticello.
“We were walking on the walls [of the boat]. We saved who we could, Cutfield also saved the little girl and her mother,” he said, referring to passenger Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter. In all there were 15 survivors of the wreck.
Cutfield exercised his right to remain silent when questioned by prosecutors on Tuesday, his lawyers said, saying he was “worn out” and that they needed more time to build a defense case. Parker Eaton has not commented on the investigation.
Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said last week that the vessel was most likely hit by a “downburst”, a very strong downward wind.
However, the sinking has puzzled naval marine experts, who said a vessel like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm and, in any case, should not have sunk as quickly as it did.
Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, have said their investigation will take time, with the wreck yet to be salvaged from the sea.

2 Crew Members Under Investigation In Sicily Yacht Sinking
As the investigation into the sinking of the superyacht off the coast of Sicily broadens, Italian prosecutors are now scrutinizing the actions of two other crew members in addition to the captain of the vessel.
On Wednesday, prosecutors placed crew members Tim Parker Eaton and Matthew Griffiths under investigation, according to The New York Times . Eaton was in charge of the yacht’s engine room, while Griffiths was on lookout duty the night the yacht sank.
When someone is placed under investigation in Italy, there is no guarantee that charges will follow.
The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht deemed unsinkable by its ship maker Perini Navi, went down in a storm off the coast of Sicily on Aug. 19, killing one crew member and six passengers, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.
The yacht carried 22 people — 10 crew members and 12 guests who were there celebrating Lynch’s acquittal in June on all charges in a fraud case that followed the sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.
Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping on a lifeboat and were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell. It remains unclear how the Bayesian sank, especially as the nearby Baden Powell remained largely unscathed despite the storm.
According to The Associated Press , Giovanni Costantino, head of the Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi, said the yacht’s sinking was likely caused by human error.
“The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,” he told Italian state media, per the AP.
Captain James Cutfield is facing a manslaughter inquiry to determine whether his actions caused the shipwreck, Cutfield’s lawyer Giovanni Rizzuti told the Times on Tuesday. Prosecutors interviewed Cutfield this week, but he exercised his right to remain silent and is “very distressed,” according to Rizzuti.
This week, nine of the 10 crew members, including those under investigation, left Sicily, sources told the Times. In Italy, people under investigation are not prohibited from leaving the country.

And another crew member has reportedly told investigators that Kiwi James Cutfield, the 51-year-old captain of the Bayesian, helped save the lives of a woman and her baby.
The yacht sunk soon after being struck by an early morning storm on August 19, killing seven, including its owner, British tech billionaire Mike Lynch, and his daughter Hannah.
Cutfield has so far declined to answer questions from Italian prosecutors , with his lawyers saying he was exhausted and needed more time for his legal team to gather information. Being placed under investigation does not imply guilt nor mean charges will necessarily follow.
The Daily Mail has reported friends of Cutfield have told Italian media he has spoken to them of doing everything possible to prevent the disaster and save those aboard.
He is living through “the darkest days of his life”, the friends were quoted as saying. He is now reported to be back home on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
Meanwhile, another crew member who survived the sinking has recounted the ordeal, reportedly telling investigators “we saved who we could”.
Matthew Griffiths, 22, has also been placed under investigation. The Daily Mail has cited a report by Italian news agency Ansa that Griffiths has told investigators of being on watch duty, and waking Cutfield when winds picked up.

That comment refers to Charlotte Golunski and her baby daughter. In total, 15 people survived the sinking of the 56m yacht, including New Zealand lawyer Ayla Ronald , 36, and her partner Matthew Fletcher.
Golunski has told media that she and her family survived because they were on deck when the yacht sank, after being woken by thunder, lightning and huge waves.
“For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves,” Italian newspaper La Repubblica previously quoted her as saying. “It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”
Golunski was one of a group who managed to climb into an inflatable lifeboat, before being rescued by a nearby boat.
Cutfield’s brother Mark has previously told the Herald his brother was a “very good sailor” and was “very well-respected” in the Mediterranean.
James had been a captain on luxury yachts for eight years and had previously been working on them and involved in building them for the past 30 years in various locations around the Mediterranean.
He said before he worked for British tech tycoon Lynch, he had worked for a Turkish billionaire.
Mark said James was a “top sailor” in his youth and raced 470s competitively.

BARCELONA, Spain — Emirates Team New Zealand got its yacht back in the water on Saturday, two days after it was damaged when dropped from a crane at the America’s Cup .
The Kiwis’ shore crew worked around the clock to cut out and replace a piece of the hull of the 75-footer named “Taihoro” that was dinged up on Thursday. The boat dropped some six meters (20 feet) onto the support cradle at their team base inside Barcelona’s old port. The defending champion team has not explained what caused the incident.
Initially, team boss Grant Dalton said he feared the boat could be in the shed being refitted throughout the opening two-week phase of the race. With his team, as defending champion, guaranteed a spot in October’s finals, that would not have been a disaster. But it would have limited their sailing time to prime their boat.
But the boat was out of action only on Friday.
New Zealand was skimming over the Mediterranean waves on its hydrofoils on Saturday for a warmup race against Orient Express Racing Team. The French however, were unable to participate due to an unspecified technical issue.
“Unbelievable to get the boat back out on the water,” Taihoro crew member Sam Meech said. “The boat’s going like it always has and we’re pretty happy with the boat’s performance. It was just good to get out there, and just run through our day.”
Italy leads, Swiss struggle
In the opening stage, the boats race each another twice with a point going to each winner. The five challengers will be reduced to four for the semifinals.
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, the 2021 finalist, made a statement on Saturday by beating both NYYC American Magic and INEOS Britannia, the two boats that many race watchers thought had the best chance to challenge the Italians for a the top spot.
Luna Rossa leads the standings with a 3-0 record. INEOS is 2-1, American Magic 2-2, and Orient Express 1-2. Switzerland’s Alinghi Red Bull Racing is 0-3 and in the danger zone.

An elevator serves all guest decks, from lower to sun decks. Forward on the sun deck is a large jacuzzi, double sunpad and a wet bar with glass handrails to protect the view. Aft is a sun lounging space with buffet bar. Inside there is a fully equipped gym overlooking the sun lounge, a separate massage room and a dayhead.
The bridge deck aft has dining for up to 14 guests shaded by the overhang, with a BBQ for the chef’s table experience, and a sun lounge with sofas aft. There is sofa seating forward of the bridge and access to the foredeck where her 8.8m (28.9ft) Pascoe tender and toys are stowed on passage, launched by a deck crane. The sky lounge features sofa seating and armchairs around a coffee table, there is a large TV on the forward bulkhead and a dayhead off the lobby.
The main deck aft has U-shaped sofa seating aft, a large versatile space for entertainment or exercise and steps either side leading down to the beach club and swim platform with hydraulic bathing steps. The beach club has a sit-up wet bar, sauna, steam shower, changing room and dayhead.
She welcomes up to 14 guests in six suites. The owner’s suite is forward on the main deck and features an oversized double berth to port and TV lounge to starboard complete with a large folding balcony. Forward there is an owner’s dressing room and an en suite with shower room and bath, while aft there is an owner’s office. There is a VIP suite on the bridge deck and on the lower deck there are two double cabins and two convertible cabins, each with an additional berth. STELLA M also has accommodation for up to 14 crew.
Twin 1,851hp MTU diesel engines combine with two Scania diesel generators to give her a top speed of 15 knots, a cruising speed of 13.5 knots and a transatlantic range of 4,500nm. Zero speed stabilisers ensure comfort on arrival and engine hours are low after just a single season of private use.

VSY's 72m flagship superyacht Stella Maris sold
The 72 metre flagship of Italian yard Viareggio Superyachts (VSY) Stella Maris has been sold by Simon Ting at SuperYachtsMonaco with World Yacht Group's Joan Plana Palao introducing the buyer.
Penned by legendary superyacht designer Espen Øino with naval architecture by Laurent Giles, Stella Maris is packed with premium features including a fully certified commercial Eurocopter EC 135 helideck, a dedicated owner's deck and saloons with 2.7 metre interior headroom.
The massive 2114GT interior offers accommodation for a total of 12 guests across seven cabins comprising the master suite with its accompanying office and ensuite, four double cabins and two twins. The contemporary interior decor meanwhile, which features a calm, neutral colour palette, was styled by Michela Reverberi .
Two spa pools, a sauna, hammam, dedicated massage room and gym can be found on the lower deck beach club.
Power comes from twin Caterpillar 3516B engines for a top speed of 17 knots and a range of 5,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots.

Stella Maris was asking €75,000,000.
