Defender 27

Defender 27 is a 26 ′ 2 ″ / 8 m monohull sailboat designed by Andre Mauric and Jacques Gaubert and built by Dekker & Sons (Jachtwerf F. Dekker en Zonen) starting in 1971.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Inboard Buhk Desiel was optional. Based on the earlier DEFENDER 15 (IOR 1/4 ton), with more freeboard and entirely new deck. Later a stretched version became the DEFENDER 32. The 27 was, by far, the yards most popular model.

The Defender 27 is a moderate weight sailboat which is slightly under powered. It is very stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a day-boat. There is a very short water supply range.

Meaning: if you load 97 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 544 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Thanks to its 8′ 6″ beam the 27 Defiant is easily trailerable. It is an extremely durable and highly versatile craft that, like all Metal Sharks, may be configured and customized to suit a wide range of mission profiles. Featuring a deep vee hull and power options up to 500 HP, the 27 Defiant will slice through the waves, its wide reverse chines provide stability while at rest, and its crew-friendly layout allow for comfortable, efficient, and safe operation in a range of environments.

Deck Layout

The 27 Defiant boasts a clutter-free deck arrangement that allows for easy, surefooted passage from bow to stern, with wide-open workspaces and non-skid walkways throughout. Low-level LED pathway illumination has been provided for night missions, and grab rails are ideally placed and always within easy reach. A durable, urethane-sheathed, closed-cell foam collar provides impact resistance during boarding or alongside maneuvers, and integrated dive reliefs facilitate water access and recovery. The 27 Defiant may be equipped with an open-bow configuration with the bow cockpit easily accessed through a large sliding companionway door in the pilothouse, while a closed-bow version with v-berth is also available.

Pilothouse Details

Custom-Configurable

The 27 Defiant is available in two configurations. In the Bow Cockpit model, (shown) a forward door provides through-cabin access to the open foredeck, while the Cuddy Cabin model features a roomy forward cabin that also serves as a large dry storage compartment. Both configurations come standard with a full-width main pilothouse cabin that may be fitted with optional climate control and shock mitigating seating for true, all-weather comfort. The vessel shown here has been configured for port security and law enforcement patrol, and has been equipped with forward pusher knees and a 500 lb. capacity davit in the aft cockpit. Low-level cockpit LED lighting and available thermal-imaging (FLIR) system provide safety during night missions, while the removable engine protection bar keeps the 27 Defiant’s twin outboards safe and secure while operating in close quarters.

Choice of the United States Navy

The Metal Shark 27 Defiant currently serves as the US Navy Force Protection Boat – Small. In FPB-S configuration, the 27 Defiant features a more conventional windshield arrangement, but offers the advantage of a convertible pilothouse that folds down and stows away for transport.

80-year-old man dies after falling off boat on the Grand Canyon's Colorado River

The incident happened near fossil rapid inside the park. the identity of the man has not been released by officials at this time. this is the latest in a string of deaths inside the park this year..

An 80-year-old man is dead after falling from a boat on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon National Park.

The incident happened over on the afternoon of Sunday, August 25 near Fossil Rapid inside the park. National Park officials said a man had reportedly flipped in his boat on the river and officials with the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center had received reports that CPR was in progress on the man.

Despite life-saving efforts done by the group and park rangers flown into the area, the man was pronounced dead.

Both the National Park Service and Coconino County Medical Examiner are investigating the incident. The man's identity has not been released at this time, but officials said he was on a commercial river trip when the incident occurred.

Other deaths have happened at the park this year

Over the weekend, search-and-rescue crews located the body of Chenoa Nickerson, 33, from Gilbert, Arizona who was missing during a flash flood that swept through the area while she was on a hiking trip.

Justin Guthrie from St. Anne, Missouri fell to his death while BASE jumping from Yavapai Point on the South Rim back on Aug. 1. The day before, 20-year-old Abel Joseph Mejia fell 400 feet to his death after standing too close to the edge of the rim. Officials at the park said his death was the result of “an accidental fall.”

Uruguayan defender Izquierdo dies after collapsing during match

Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo , who collapsed on the pitch after suffering an irregular heartbeat last week, has died, his Uruguayan club said on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old had been undergoing medical treatment since collapsing during Nacional's Copa Libertadores game against Sao Paulo on Aug. 22.

Izquierdo fell to the ground unconscious in the 84th minute without coming into contact with another player. He was taken off the pitch in an ambulance before being treated at the intensive care unit of Albert Einstein Hospital.

The hospital said in a statement Izquierdo had died as a result of brain death following a cardiopulmonary arrest associated with cardiac arrhythmia.

"It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that the Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo," Nacional wrote on X.

"We express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones. All of Nacional is in mourning for his irreparable loss."

Izquierdo's wife, Selena, shared a message on Izquierdo's social media channels to "say goodbye to my half, the love of my life." They have two children -- the youngest, a boy, was born earlier in August.

"For many, Juan Izquierdo, my Juanma, my best friend, my husband, the father of my children, my unconditional partner. Today a part of me dies with you," she said.

Uruguay's air force said one of its planes will transport his coffin to Montevideo later on Wednesday.

Uruguay suspended all football activity last weekend due to concerns over Izquierdo's health.

Alejandro Dominguez, the president of CONMEBOL, also extended his condolences to Izquierdo's family and friends.

"South American football is in mourning," he added.

Uruguay national team players and former Izquierdo teammates also expressed their condolences.

"Pain, sadness, it is hard to explain," Inter Miami striker Luis Suárez said. "May he rest in peace. I wish a lot of strength for his family and friends."

Izquierdo's career included spells at Cerro , Peñarol , Wanderers and Liverpool in Uruguay. He also played for Liga MX 's San Luis .

The Uruguayan Football Association said the news was deeply painful, while the national governing bodies of Argentina, Peru, Paraguay and Colombia extended their condolences to Izquierdo's family and friends.

Brazilian Football Federation president Ednaldo Rodrigues said a minute's silence would be observed in every match organised by the federation on Wednesday.

Sao Paulo said they were deeply saddened by the news, calling it a "sad day for football."

The D 27 was designed long before IMS; in the days of IOR. This general style of boat is generally very seaworthy, albiet a bit hard to control if pressed hard downwind in a breeze.

West Coast Eagles defender Tom Barrass requests trade to Hawthorn

West Coast Eagles defender Tom Barrass has told the club he wants to be traded to Hawthorn.

The reliable defender made his debut for the club in 2015 and has played 150 games.

A switch to the Hawks would see him reunited with his former West Coast teammate Sam Mitchell, the Hawthorn coach. 

Barrass, who will turn 29 in October, reportedly met with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell — his former teammate and assistant coach at West Coast — last month.

Barrass has not played for the Eagles since that time, with concussion and then a hamstring injury keeping him out of the club's final four matches of the season.

West Coast released a statement on Tuesday afternoon, confirming Barrass had submitted a trade request during his exit interview, and nominated Hawthorn as his preferred destination.

"Tom has today informed us of his desire to pursue an opportunity at another club," the Eagles' general manager of football, Gavin Bell, said.

"While the club respects Tom's request, he is contracted for another three seasons and our vice-captain.

"We will endeavour to meet Tom's request while protecting the best interests of the West Coast Eagles."

Barrass's future was the subject of speculation last year, with Sydney considered the frontrunner to secure his services. 

Barrass has played 150 games since being taken with pick 43 in the 2013 national draft.

He took out the John Worsfold Medal as the Eagles' fairest and best in 2022.

The 2024 AFL trade period commences on October 7.

Former Franklin County public defender pleads guilty to federal child porn charges

A former Franklin County public defender has admitted in federal court to possessing and receiving child pornography, court records show.

Stephen Chinn, 40, had been arrested in August 2023 after Grandview Heights police received a tip from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children unit.

Chinn had worked in the Franklin County Public Defender's office in the county Municipal Court unit before his arrest. He was terminated following a federal indictment being filed in September 2023.

On Tuesday, Chinn pleaded guilty to charges of receiving and possessing child pornography and will be sentenced at a later date, court records state. Chinn will remain in custody until his sentencing hearing.

Court records say Chinn had a desktop computer that had more than 4,000 images of child sexual abuse on it, much of which had been downloaded during a two-day period.

He faces a possible sentence of between five and 20 years in federal prison.

This Meadowlands boat tour is a 'wow factory,' with great views of NJ marsh wildlife

Showing people what she called the “wow factory” — the natural wonders that exist in New Jersey's own backyard — is what Gabrielle Bennett-Meany and her colleagues at the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority hope to do.

Bennett-Meany serves as the authority's manager of parks, trails and open space and is one of the guides for its free boat tours, which offer visitors close-up access to the Meadowlands' natural wonders.

 “When you’re on the highway, sometimes you don’t even know what’s down here,” Bennett-Meany said. “They say, ‘This is amazing. Who knew? I drive over Route 3 every day,’ or ‘I drive on the turnpike every day.’”

With 30 years’ experience in the Meadowlands, she brings an enthusiasm and insight to the experience, providing context about the region as well as the wildlife glimpsed along the way.

When do the Meadowlands tours run?

The authority runs tours weekly throughout the spring and summer, and those looking for a last dose of sunshine can still find a chance through the end of September. There are also walking trails in the Meadowlands region that are open all year round for visitors.

But the boats may be the crown jewel of the operation.

Boat tours that can accommodate about 14 people are led by veteran guides who bring decades of experience studying the wildlife and ecosystem of a vast and still largely overlooked area.

Bennett-Meany called the region the “best-kept secret” and said sometimes that’s for the best, because the makeup of the riverbed can be tricky to navigate, especially for people without experience.

The return of the osprey and the presence of bald eagles have garnered attention in the past, but the difference between hearing a story and seeing it in person can be astounding. And then there’s the peregrine falcon. The fastest animal on the planet — with flight speeds topping 200 miles per hour — can be found nestled into the underside of a bridge along Route 3.

Things like that provide context to visitors.

The marshlands are home to plenty of ducks and seagulls that can be found throughout the region, but watching a flock of cormorants take flight as the boat comes into the dock is a difference maker. It’s something unique — but with American Dream and MetLife Stadium, soon to host the 2026 World Cup, still in view, it's quintessentially Jersey.

The boat tours run along the Hackensack River and into the nearby tributaries and marshes, depending on tides and wildlife.

Bennett-Meany likes to start each tour with a little context about the river and how it works, running from the mountains of upstate New York into New Jersey before meeting the Passaic River and running into the Newark Bay. As a tidal river, it sees fluctuations in the water level, which the tours take into account.

“People live in our communities and are sort of separated from our natural areas, but once we begin to realize that our community is part of these natural areas,” she said, “it makes us think about what we’re doing in our hometown, how we’re connected to the environment and why many, many of these environments are very important.”

From where do the Meadowlands tour boats launch?

Boats launch from River Barge Park Marina in Carlstadt and venture up and down the river for about two hours. The marina’s manager, Angelo Urato, has watched the agency and the area evolve during 40 years of service.

He said that at low tide, the animals tend to be more active and visitors have a better shot at seeing a variety of species.

Bennett-Meany said having a harbor seal turn up about a decade ago was exciting, but the highlight for her has been the return of the ospreys.

She explained that decades ago, before the Clean Water Act set parameters on pollution, it was common to dump waste in the river, and the water quality was poor.

But wetlands protection efforts led to the rebirth of the area, and as species of fish and birds started to come back, so did the bigger birds that feed on them.

Enter the osprey. About 15 years ago, an osprey turned up. It nested and had young but ultimately failed. A year or two later, they came back and nested, and now they are a constant.

“It’s my favorite resurgence story,” she said.

Although the boating season is coming to an end, the Meadowlands Birding Festival will take place on Oct. 6 and will feature bird walks, talks and other activities at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst.
